Intelligent transport of molecular species across different barriers is critical for various biological functions and is achieved through the unique properties of biological membranes1-4. Two essential features of intelligent transport are the ability to (1) adapt to different external and internal conditions and (2) memorize the previous state5. In biological systems, the most common form of such intelligence is expressed as hysteresis6. Despite numerous advances made over previous decades on smart membranes, it remains a challenge to create a synthetic membrane with stable hysteretic behaviour for molecular transport7-11. Here we demonstrate the memory effects and stimuli-regulated transport of molecules through an intelligent, phase-changing MoS2 membrane in response to external pH. We show that water and ion permeation through 1T' MoS2 membranes follows a pH-dependent hysteresis with a permeation rate that switches by a few orders of magnitude. We establish that this phenomenon is unique to the 1T' phase of MoS2, due to the presence of surface charge and exchangeable ions on the surface. We further demonstrate the potential application of this phenomenon in autonomous wound infection monitoring and pH-dependent nanofiltration. Our work deepens understanding of the mechanism of water transport at the nanoscale and opens an avenue for the development of intelligent membranes.

Despite being only one-atom thick, defect-free graphene is considered to be completely impermeable to all gases and liquids1-10. This conclusion is based on theory3-8 and supported by experiments1,9,10 that could not detect gas permeation through micrometre-size membranes within a detection limit of 105 to 106 atoms per second. Here, using small monocrystalline containers tightly sealed with graphene, we show that defect-free graphene is impermeable with an accuracy of eight to nine orders of magnitude higher than in the previous experiments. We are capable of discerning (but did not observe) permeation of just a few helium atoms per hour, and this detection limit is also valid for all other gases tested (neon, nitrogen, oxygen, argon, krypton and xenon), except for hydrogen. Hydrogen shows noticeable permeation, even though its molecule is larger than helium and should experience a higher energy barrier. This puzzling observation is attributed to a two-stage process that involves dissociation of molecular hydrogen at catalytically active graphene ripples, followed by adsorbed atoms flipping to the other side of the graphene sheet with a relatively low activation energy of about 1.0 electronvolt, a value close to that previously reported for proton transport11,12. Our work provides a key reference for the impermeability of two-dimensional materials and is important from a fundamental perspective and for their potential applications.

In the field of metagenomic research, the choice of DNA extraction methods plays a pivotal yet often underestimated role in shaping the reliability and interpretability of microbial community data. This study delves into the impact of five commercially available DNA extraction kits on the analysis of bovine fecal microbiota. Recognizing the importance of accurate DNA extraction in elucidating microbial community dynamics, we systematically assessed DNA yield, quality, and microbial composition across these kits using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Notably, the FastDNA spin soil kit yielded the highest DNA concentration, while significant variations in quality were observed across kits. Furthermore, differential abundance analysis revealed kit-specific biases that impacted taxa representation. Microbial richness and diversity were significantly influenced by the choice of extraction kit, with QIAamp DNA stool minikit, QIAamp Power Pro, and DNeasy PowerSoil outperforming the Stool DNA Kit. Principal-coordinate analysis revealed distinct clustering based on DNA isolation procedures, particularly highlighting the unique microbial community composition derived from the Stool DNA Kit. This study also addressed practical implications, demonstrating how kit selection influences the concentration of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial taxa in samples. This research highlights the need for consideration of DNA extraction kits in metagenomic studies, offering valuable insights for researchers striving to advance the precision and depth of microbiota analyses in ruminants.

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) capped silver nanoparticles are exceptional nanomaterials, featuring precise size and shape control enabled by DNA as a capping agent. DNA stabilizes these nanoparticles' role leading to uniform structures for diverse applications. These nanoparticles are excellent in photonics and medical applications, enhancing fluorescence and medical imaging. In this study, we explore the multifaceted applications of DNA-capped silver nanoparticles, delving into their optical, photocatalytic, antibacterial, cytotoxic, and bioimaging properties. Employing UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, we provide an analysis of confirmation of silver nanoparticles. The investigation demonstrates substantial photocatalytic efficacy, photodegradation of methylene blue is higher than rhodamine 6G. The presence of silver nanoparticles enhances the fluorescence of rhodamine 6G doped sol-gel glasses. Furthermore, our findings illustrate significant antibacterial effects, encompassing both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, with DNA-capped silver nanoparticles exhibiting antibacterial activity. Cytotoxicity assessments on HeLa cells reveal concentration-dependent effects, with an LC50 value of 47 µL. Additionally, the in vitro experiments with HeLa cells suggest the promising utility of DNA-capped silver nanoparticles for bioimaging applications. This comprehensive analysis highlights the multifunctionality and potential of DNA-capped silver nanoparticles, offering promising avenues for further exploration and innovation within various scientific domains, particularly in the realm of nanomaterial research.

Synthesizing nanoparticles in biotemplates has been cited as one of the most promising way to obtain monodispersed inorganic nanoparticles. In this method, uniform voids in porous materials serve as hosts to confine the synthesized nanoparticles. DNA template can be described as a smart glue for assembling nanoscale building blocks. Here we investigate the photocatalytic, antibacterial, cytotoxic, and bioimaging applications of DNA capped CdS. XRD, SEM, TEM, UV-visible absorption, and photoluminescence spectra were used to study structural, morphological, and optical properties of CdS nanoparticles. Prepared CdS nanoparticles exhibit visible fluorescence. The photocatalytic activity of CdS towards Rhodamine 6G and Methylene blue are 64% and 91% respectively. A disc-diffusion method is used to demonstrate antibacterial screening. It was shown that CdS nanoparticles inhibit Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria effectively. DNA capped CdS shows higher activity than uncapped CdS nanoparticles. MTT cell viability assays were carried out in HeLa cells to investigate the cytotoxicity for 24 h. At a concentration 2.5 µg/ml, it shows 84% cell viability and 43% viability at 12.5 µg/ml. The calculated LC50 value is equal to 8 µg/ml. These DNA capped CdS nanoparticles were taken for an in-vitro experiment with HeLa cells to exhibit the possibility of bioimaging applications. The present study suggests that the synthesized CdS nanoparticles could be a potential photocatalyst, antibacterial agent, and biocompatible nanoparticle for bioimaging applications.

Controlled transport of water molecules through membranes and capillaries is important in areas as diverse as water purification and healthcare technologies1-7. Previous attempts to control water permeation through membranes (mainly polymeric ones) have concentrated on modulating the structure of the membrane and the physicochemical properties of its surface by varying the pH, temperature or ionic strength3,8. Electrical control over water transport is an attractive alternative; however, theory and simulations9-14 have often yielded conflicting results, from freezing of water molecules to melting of ice14-16 under an applied electric field. Here we report electrically controlled water permeation through micrometre-thick graphene oxide membranes17-21. Such membranes have previously been shown to exhibit ultrafast permeation of water17,22 and molecular sieving properties18,21, with the potential for industrial-scale production. To achieve electrical control over water permeation, we create conductive filaments in the graphene oxide membranes via controllable electrical breakdown. The electric field that concentrates around these current-carrying filaments ionizes water molecules inside graphene capillaries within the graphene oxide membranes, which impedes water transport. We thus demonstrate precise control of water permeation, from ultrafast permeation to complete blocking. Our work opens up an avenue for developing smart membrane technologies for artificial biological systems, tissue engineering and filtration.

BACKGROUND: Up to 70% of people with multiple sclerosis (MS) experience cognitive difficulties. Cognitive rehabilitation is a type of therapy that helps manage cognitive problems. OBJECTIVE: The Cognitive Rehabilitation for Attention and Memory in MS (CRAMMS) trial showed some evidence of effectiveness of cognitive rehabilitation in improving cognitive function, with some participants benefitting more than others. We therefore conducted a secondary analysis of the CRAMMS data to understand who benefits most. METHODS: We grouped baseline data into four categories of possible predictors. We used regression models to identify specific factors/characteristics that could predict the likelihood that an individual will benefit from cognitive rehabilitation. RESULTS: The models predicted whether a participant improved or did not improve in neuropsychological function following cognitive rehabilitation in up to 86% of participants. Results suggest that younger participants with medium to high education, diagnosed with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) and primary-progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS) who have not experienced any recent relapses, with mild to moderate cognitive difficulties were most likely to benefit from cognitive rehabilitation. CONCLUSION: We can predict which participants are most likely to demonstrate significant improvements in neuropsychological function following group-based cognitive rehabilitation. Clinically, this allows us to optimise limited neuropsychology resources by offering such cognitive rehabilitation to those most likely to benefit.

In the present work, biocompatible CdS nanoparticles were synthesized using Schiff base ligand, 3-((2-(-(1-(2hydroxyphenyl)ethylidene)amino)ethyl)imino)-2-pentone, by a simple ultrasonic irradiation method. The structural, morphological, and optical properties were studied using XRD, SEM, TEM, UV-visible absorption, and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. The quantum confinement effect of the Schiff base capped CdS nanoparticles was confirmed by using UV-visible and PL spectrum analysis. This CdS nanoparticles were an effective photocatalyst for degrading rhodamine 6G and methylene blue with a 70% and 98% degradation capacity, respectively. Furthermore, the disc-diffusion method demonstrated that CdS nanoparticles inhibit G-positive bacteria and G-negative bacteria more effectively. These Schiff base capped CdS nanoparticles were taken for an in-vitro experiment with HeLa cells to exhibit the possibility of providing optical probes in biological applications and observed under a fluorescence microscope. In addition, MTT cell viability assays were carried out to investigate the cytotoxicity for 24 h. As a result of this study, 2.5 µg/ml doses of CdS nanoparticles are suitable for imaging and are effective in destroying HeLa cells. The present study suggests that the synthesized Schiff base capped CdS nanoparticles could be a potential photocatalyst, antibacterial agent, and biocompatible nanoparticle for bioimaging applications.

Dipteran endoparasitoids avoid host immune response; however, antidefense components from the Dipterans are unknown. Infestation of commercial silkworm Bombyx mori Linnaeus (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae) by endoparasitoid Exorista bombycis Louis (Diptera: Tachinidae) induced immune reactions, cytotoxicity, granulation, degranulation, and augmented release of cytotoxic marker enzyme lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and degranulation-mediator enzyme ß-hexosaminidase in hemocytes. In this study, by reverse phase high-performance liquid chromatography, fractions of E. bombycis larval tissue protein with antihemocytic activity are separated. From the fraction, peptides of hemocyte aggregation inhibitor protein (HAIP) and pyridoxamine phosphate oxidase (PNPO) are identified by mass spectrometry. Interacting partners of HAIP and PNPO are retrieved that further enhance the virulence of the parasitoid. PNPO and HAIP genes showed a four- to seven fold increase in expression in the integument of the parasitoid larva. Together, the dipteran endoparasitoid E. bombycis exploit antihemocyte activity to inhibit host defense reactions in addition to defense evasion contemplated.

BACKGROUND: The Early CDT®-Lung antibody blood test plus serial computed tomography scans for test-positives (TPGs) reduces late-stage lung cancer presentation. This study assessed the psychological outcomes of this approach. METHODS: Randomized controlled trial (n = 12 208) comparing psychological outcomes 1-12 months post-recruitment in a subsample (n = 1032) of TPG, test-negative (TNG) and control groups (CG). RESULTS: Compared to TNG, TPG had lower positive affect (difference between means (DBM), 3 months (3m: -1.49 (-2.65, - 0.33)), greater impact of worries (DBM 1m: 0.26 (0.05, 0.47); 3m: 0.28 (0.07, 0.50)), screening distress (DBM 1m: 3.59 (2.28, 4.90); 3m: 2.29 (0.97, 3.61); 6m: 1.94 (0.61, 3.27)), worry about tests (odds ratio (OR) 1m: 5.79 (2.66, 12.63) and more frequent lung cancer worry (OR 1m: 2.52 (1.31, 4.83); 3m: 2.43 (1.26, 4.68); 6m: 2.87 (1.48, 5.60)). Compared to CG, TPG had greater worry about tests (OR 1m: 3.40 (1.69, 6.84)). TNG had lower negative affect (log-transformed DBM 3m: -0.08 (-0.13, -0.02)), higher positive affect (DBM 1m: 1.52 (0.43, 2.61); 3m: 1.43 (0.33, 2.53); 6m: 1.27 (0.17, 2.37)), less impact of worries (DBM 3m: -0.27 (-0.48, -0.07)) and less-frequent lung cancer worry (OR 3m: 0.49 (0.26, 0.92)). CONCLUSIONS: Negative psychological effects in TPG and positive effects in TNG were short-lived and most differences were small.

Approximately 20% of acquired brain injury (ABI) survivors experience reduced psychological wellbeing (PWB). Neuropsychological rehabilitation (NPR) is one approach supporting people with ABI to participate meaningfully in activities despite challenges. Although literature supports NPR effectiveness, little is known about change mechanisms. This systematic realist review identifies what NPR programmes have been designed, delivered, and evaluated for people with ABI to improve PWB and/or quality of life (QOL), as well as providing a context-relevant understanding of what NPR includes and how NPR might lead to positive outcomes. A rapid realist review was conducted in three phases: (1) structured retrieval and evidence extraction; (2) stakeholder consultation; (3) analysis and synthesis. Searches were completed, and findings from 35 publications and one stakeholder consultation were synthesized into a refined logic model. Six context-mechanism-outcome chains (CMOCs) were identified. Participants' relationships to internal experiences, and feelings of self-worth, mastery, and connection appeared to be mechanisms that led to improved PWB and QOL. Adaptation and individualized programmes were also key mechanisms to explain successful NPR. Embedding CMOCs into NPR could improve PWB and/or QOL for people with ABI. The logic model will inform ongoing development of a new online, group-based, NPR programme.

Individuals with intellectual disability (ID) face significant challenges in preventing oral diseases. They also lack access to high-quality oral health care in professional settings. To understand the effects of oral conditions on their lives and health, it is necessary to assess their oral health outcome measures. For those with mild ID, who possess adequate linguistic and cognitive abilities, accessibility features should be incorporated in the dental patient reported outcome (dPRO) measures. But many other individuals often lack the linguistic and cognitive ability to self-report through dPRO measures. While self-reported measures are preferable, requiring dPROs in this population would result in a high amount of missing data and the inability to assess interventions for improving their dental health. Thus, there is a need to use proxy-reported outcome (ProxRO) measures, observer reported outcome (ObsRO) measures, and clinician reported outcome (ClinRO) measures among those with ID. This is also a common approach taken by other specialties that work closely with those with ID, where the measures for activities of daily living and adaptive behavior measures use reporting by caregivers. ProxRO measures in dentistry that were created for infants and young children provide a structure for appropriate adaptations and the creation of relevant outcome measures. Including input from the intensely multidisciplinary teams that provide supports for those with ID is key to creating high-quality measures and oral health interventions for those with ID.

OBJECTIVES: Pain is the prevailing symptom of knee osteoarthritis. Central sensitisation creates discordance between pain and joint pathology. We previously reported a Central Pain Mechanisms trait derived from eight discrete characteristics: Neuropathic-like pain, Fatigue, Cognitive-impact, Catastrophising, Anxiety, Sleep disturbance, Depression, and Pain distribution. We here validate and show that an 8-item questionnaire, Central Aspects of Pain in the Knee (CAP-Knee) is associated both with sensory- and affective- components of knee pain severity. METHODS: Participants with knee pain were recruited from the Investigating Musculoskeletal Health and Wellbeing study in the East Midlands, UK. CAP-Knee items were refined following cognitive interviews. Psychometric properties were assessed in 250 participants using Rasch-, and factor-analysis, and Cronbach's alpha. Intra-class correlation coefficients tested repeatability. Associations between CAP-Knee and McGill Pain questionnaire pain severity scores were assessed using linear regression. RESULTS: CAP-Knee targeted the knee pain sample well. Cognitive interviews indicated that participants interpreted CAP-Knee items in diverse ways, which aligned to their intended meanings. Fit to the Rasch model was optimised by rescoring each item, producing a summated score from 0 to 16. Internal consistency was acceptable (Cronbach's alpha = 0.74) and test-retest reliability was excellent (ICC2,1 = 0.91). Each CAP-Knee item contributed uniquely to one discrete 'Central Mechanisms trait' factor. High CAP-Knee scores associated with worse overall knee pain intensity, and with each of sensory- and affective- McGill Pain Questionnaire scores. CONCLUSION: CAP-Knee is a simple and valid self-report questionnaire, which measures a single 'Central Mechanisms' trait, and may help identify and target centrally-acting treatments aiming to reduce the burden of knee pain.

Metabolic shift is an important contributory factor for progression of hypertension-induced left ventricular hypertrophy into cardiac failure. Under hypertrophic conditions, heart switches its substrate preference from fatty acid to glucose. Prolonged dependence on glucose for energy production has adverse cardiovascular consequences. It was reported earlier that reactivation of fatty acid metabolism with medium chain triglycerides ameliorated cardiac hypertrophy, oxidative stress and energy level in spontaneously hypertensive rat. However, the molecular mechanism mediating the beneficial effect of medium chain triglycerides remained elusive. It was hypothesized that reduction of cardiomyocyte hypertrophy by medium chain fatty acid (MCFA) is mediated by modulation of signaling pathways over expressed in cardiac hypertrophy. The protective effect of medium chain fatty acid (MCFA) was evaluated in cellular model of myocyte hypertrophy. H9c2 cells were stimulated with Arginine vasopressin (AVP) for the induction of hypertrophy. Cell volume and secretion of brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) were used for assessment of cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. Cells were pretreated with MCFA (Caprylic acid) and metabolic modulation was assessed from the expression of medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (MCAD), cluster of differentiation-36 (CD36) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-α mRNA. The signaling molecules modified by MCFA was evaluated from protein expression of mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPK: ERK1/2, p38 and JNK) and Calcineurin A. Pretreatment with MCFA stimulated fatty acid metabolism in hypertrophic H9c2, with concomitant reduction of cell volume and BNP secretion. MCFA reduced activated ERK1/2, JNK and calicineurin A expression mediated by AVP. In conclusion, the beneficial effect of MCFA is possibly mediated by stimulation of fatty acid metabolism and modulation of MAPK and Calcineurin A.

Bulk water exists in many forms, including liquid, vapour and numerous crystalline and amorphous phases of ice, with hexagonal ice being responsible for the fascinating variety of snowflakes. Much less noticeable but equally ubiquitous is water adsorbed at interfaces and confined in microscopic pores. Such low-dimensional water determines aspects of various phenomena in materials science, geology, biology, tribology and nanotechnology. Theory suggests many possible phases for adsorbed and confined water, but it has proved challenging to assess its crystal structure experimentally. Here we report high-resolution electron microscopy imaging of water locked between two graphene sheets, an archetypal example of hydrophobic confinement. The observations show that the nanoconfined water at room temperature forms 'square ice'--a phase having symmetry qualitatively different from the conventional tetrahedral geometry of hydrogen bonding between water molecules. Square ice has a high packing density with a lattice constant of 2.83 Å and can assemble in bilayer and trilayer crystallites. RESUMO

In insects infections trigger hemocyte-mediated immune reactions including degranulation by exocytosis; however, involvement of mediator enzymes in degranulation process is unknown in insects. We report here that in silkworm Bombyx mori, infection by endoparasitoid Exorista bombycis and microsporidian Nosema bombycis activated granulation in granulocytes and promoted degranulation of accumulated structured granules. During degranulation the mediator lysosomal enzyme ß-hexosaminidase showed increased activity and expression of ß-hexosaminidase gene was enhanced. The events were confirmed in vitro after incubation of uninfected hemocytes with E. bombycis larval tissue protein. On infection, cytotoxicity marker enzyme lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) was released from the hemocytes illustrating cell toxicity. Strong positive correlation (R2 = 0.71) between LDH activity and ß-hexosaminidase released after the infection showed parasitic-protein-induced hemocyte damage and accompanied release of the enzymes. Expression of ß-hexosaminidase gene was enhanced in early stages after infection followed by down regulation. The expression showed positive correlation (R2 = 0.705) with hexosaminidase activity pattern. B. mori hexosaminidase showed 98% amino acid similarity with that of B. mandarina showing origin from same ancestral gene; however, 45-60% varied from other lepidopterans showing diversity. The observation signifies the less known association of hexosaminidase in degranulation of hemocytes induced by parasitic infection in B. mori and its divergence in different species.

Intracellular microsporidian Nosema mylitta infects Indian wild silkworm Antheraea mylitta causing pebrine disease. Genetic structure and phylogeny of N. mylitta are analysed using nucleotide variability in 5S ribosomal DNA and intergenic spacer (IGS) sequence from 20 isolates collected from Southern, Northern and Central regions of Jharkhand State. Nucleotide diversity (π) and genetic differentiation Gst were highest in the Central isolates whereas lowest in the North. Among the isolates, absence of nucleotides, transitions and transversions were observed. Haplotyping showed nucleotide variability at 83 positions in IGS and 13 positions in 5S rDNA. Haplotype-based genetic differentiation was 0.96 to 0.97 whereas nucleotide sequence-based genetic differentiation was higher (Ks = 22.29) between Southern and Central isolates. Bottleneck analysis showed negative value for Tajima's D and other summary statistics revealing induction of loss of rare alleles and population explosion. From IGS, 17 ancestral sequences were inferred by Network algorithm. Core of nine closely related nodes having ancient nucleotides and peripheral nodes with highly divergent nucleotides were derived. Most diverged peripheral haplotype was Bero (H11) from the Central region whereas Deoghar (H3) of the Northern region diverged early. Phylogeny of N. mylitta grouped Southern and Northern isolates together revealed weak phylogenetic signal for these locations. Phylogeny of N. mylitta with Nosema sp. infecting other lepidopterans clustered N. mylitta isolates with N. antheraea and N. philosamiae of China indicating genetic similarity whereas other species were dissimilar showing diversity irrespective of country of origin.

It is commonly accepted that a parametric amplifier can simulate a phase-preserving linear amplifier regardless of how the latter is realized [C. M. Caves et al., Phys. Rev. A 86, 063802 (2012)PLRAAN1050-294710.1103/PhysRevA.86.063802]. If true, this reduces all phase-preserving linear amplifiers to a single familiar model. Here we disprove this claim by constructing two counterexamples. A detailed discussion of the physics of our counterexamples is provided. It is shown that a Heisenberg-picture analysis facilitates a microscopic explanation of the physics. This also resolves a question about the nature of amplifier-added noise in degenerate two-photon amplification.

Graphene is increasingly explored as a possible platform for developing novel separation technologies. This interest has arisen because it is a maximally thin membrane that, once perforated with atomic accuracy, may allow ultrafast and highly selective sieving of gases, liquids, dissolved ions and other species of interest. However, a perfect graphene monolayer is impermeable to all atoms and molecules under ambient conditions: even hydrogen, the smallest of atoms, is expected to take billions of years to penetrate graphene's dense electronic cloud. Only accelerated atoms possess the kinetic energy required to do this. The same behaviour might reasonably be expected in the case of other atomically thin crystals. Here we report transport and mass spectroscopy measurements which establish that monolayers of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) are highly permeable to thermal protons under ambient conditions, whereas no proton transport is detected for thicker crystals such as monolayer molybdenum disulphide, bilayer graphene or multilayer hBN. Protons present an intermediate case between electrons (which can tunnel easily through atomically thin barriers) and atoms, yet our measured transport rates are unexpectedly high and raise fundamental questions about the details of the transport process. We see the highest room-temperature proton conductivity with monolayer hBN, for which we measure a resistivity to proton flow of about 10 Ω cm(2) and a low activation energy of about 0.3 electronvolts. At higher temperatures, hBN is outperformed by graphene, the resistivity of which is estimated to fall below 10(-3) Ω cm(2) above 250 degrees Celsius. Proton transport can be further enhanced by decorating the graphene and hBN membranes with catalytic metal nanoparticles. The high, selective proton conductivity and stability make one-atom-thick crystals promising candidates for use in many hydrogen-based technologies.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the prevalence of temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) among working Australian adults and examine whether workplace effort-reward imbalance is associated with TMD. METHOD: Data were from Australia's National Survey of Adult Oral Health (NSAOH) 2004-06, a cross-sectional stratified clustered sample of Australian adults. The NSAOH data included information from a Computer Assisted Telephone Interview, self-complete questionnaire and oral epidemiological examination. Data included demographics, socio-economic characteristics, caries experience, diagnostic criteria for TMD, the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and a modified version of the Effort-Reward Imbalance instrument (ERI) where ERI ratio is the weighted ratio of workplace effort/reward subscales. Subpopulation analysis for working adults was conducted including complex sample descriptive statistics, bivariate and multivariable logistic regression models. RESULTS: NSAOH had 4014 participants with 2329 (65.1%, SE=1.3%) working adults included in the subpopulation analysis. Among working adults, TMD prevalence was 9.4% (SE=1.0%), which was slightly less than population prevalence (PR=9.9%, SE=0.8%), and was higher for females (PR=12.4%, SE=1.4%), people aged ⟨35 years (PR=11.2%, SE=2.2%) and uninsured (PR=11.8%, SE=1.7%). TMD prevalence was associated with the ERI ratio (OR=2.5, 95% CI: 1.3-4.5) and PSS scores (OR=1.1, 95% CI: 1.0-1.09) in bi-variate associations. In multivariable logistic regression, TMD was associated with being female (OR=2.1, 95% CI:1.3-3.6), university qualified (OR=0.43, 95%CI: 0.21-0.88) and with the ERI ratio (OR=2.63, 95% CI: 1.47-4.72). CONCLUSION: Greater effort-reward imbalance in the workplace is a psychosocial risk factor for TMD. This finding might need to be considered by clinicians managing TMD patients with need for investigating the efficacy of workplace stress management interventions.
