RESUMO
A high-surface-area p-type porous Si photocathode containing a covalently immobilized molecular Re catalyst is highly selective for the photoelectrochemical conversion of CO2 to CO. It gives Faradaic efficiencies of up to 90% for CO at potentials of -1.7 V (versus ferrocenium/ferrocene) under 1 sun illumination in an acetonitrile solution containing phenol. The photovoltage is approximately 300 mV based on comparisons with similar n-type porous Si cathodes in the dark. Using an estimate of the equilibrium potential for CO2 reduction to CO under optimized reaction conditions, photoelectrolysis was performed at a small overpotential, and the onset of electrocatalysis in cyclic voltammograms occurred at a modest underpotential. The porous Si photoelectrode is more stable and selective for CO production than the photoelectrode generated by attaching the same Re catalyst to a planar Si wafer. Further, facile characterization of the porous Si-based photoelectrodes using transmission mode FTIR spectroscopy leads to highly reproducible catalytic performance.
RESUMO
TiO2 thin films are often used as protective layers on semiconductors for applications in photovoltaics, molecule-semiconductor hybrid photoelectrodes, and more. Experiments reported here show that TiO2 thin films on silicon are electrochemically and photoelectrochemically reduced in buffered acetonitrile at potentials relevant to photoelectrocatalysis of CO2 reduction, N2 reduction, and H2 evolution. On both n-type Si and irradiated p-type Si, TiO2 reduction is proton-coupled with a 1e-:1H+ stoichiometry, as demonstrated by the Nernstian dependence of the Ti4+/3+ E1/2 on the buffer pKa. Experiments were conducted with and without illumination, and a photovoltage of â¼0.6 V was observed across 20 orders of magnitude in proton activity. The 4 nm films are almost stoichiometrically reduced under mild conditions. The reduced films catalytically transfer protons and electrons to hydrogen atom acceptors, based on cyclic voltammogram, bulk electrolysis, and other mechanistic evidence. TiO2/Si thus has the potential to photoelectrochemically generate high-energy H atom carriers. Characterization of the TiO2 films after reduction reveals restructuring with the formation of islands, rendering TiO2 films as a potentially poor choice as protecting films or catalyst supports under reducing and protic conditions. Overall, this work demonstrates that atomic layer deposition TiO2 films on silicon photoelectrodes undergo both chemical and morphological changes upon application of potentials only modestly negative of RHE in these media. While the results should serve as a cautionary tale for researchers aiming to immobilize molecular monolayers on "protective" metal oxides, the robust proton-coupled electron transfer reactivity of the films introduces opportunities for the photoelectrochemical generation of reactive charge-carrying mediators.
RESUMO
Eleven 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) ligands functionalized with attachment groups for covalent immobilization on silicon surfaces were prepared. Five of the ligands feature silatrane functional groups for attachment to metal oxide coatings on the silicon surfaces, while six contain either alkene or alkyne functional groups for attachment to hydrogen-terminated silicon surfaces. The bpy ligands were coordinated to Re(CO)5Cl to form complexes of the type Re(bpy)(CO)3Cl, which are related to known catalysts for CO2 reduction. Six of the new complexes were characterized using X-ray crystallography. As proof of principle, four molecular Re complexes were immobilized on either a thin layer of TiO2 on silicon or hydrogen-terminated silicon. The surface-immobilized complexes were characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry (CV) in the dark and for one representative example in the light. The CO stretching frequencies of the attached complexes were similar to those of the pure molecular complexes, but the CVs were less analogous. For two of the complexes, comparison of the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction performance showed lower CO Faradaic efficiencies for the immobilized complexes than the same complex in solution under similar conditions. In particular, a complex containing a silatrane linked to bpy with an amide linker showed poor catalytic performance and control experiments suggest that amide linkers in conjugation with a redox-active ligand are not stable under highly reducing conditions and alkyl linkers are more stable. A conclusion of this work is that understanding the behavior of molecular Re catalysts attached to semiconducting silicon is more complicated than related complexes, which have previously been immobilized on metallic electrodes.
RESUMO
The dihapto-coordination of benzene to the π-basic fragment {TpW(NO)(PMe3)} (Tp = hydridotris(pyrazolyl)-borate) enhances the basicity of the arene ligand to the point that it can be protonated with a mild Brønsted acid (diphenylammonium triflate; p Ka â¼ 1). The resulting η2-benzenium complex reacts with a wide range of nucleophiles including protected enolates, cyanide, amines, methoxide, and aromatic nucleophiles to form 5-substituted 3,4-η2-1,3-cyclohexadiene complexes in good yield (42-70%). These coordinated dienes were successfully taken through a second protonation and nucleophilic addition with a similar scope of nucleophiles (54-80%). The resulting cis-3,4- and cis-3,6-disubstituted η2-cyclohexene complexes were prepared with high regio- and stereocontrol, as governed by the asymmetric nature of π-allyl intermediates. In some cases, a diene linkage isomerization from 3,4-η2 to 1,2-η2 could be effected with a redox catalyst, and reactions of the latter species led to cis-3,5-disubstituted cyclohexene products exclusively. Oxidative decomplexation afforded the free cyclohexene products in moderate yield (37-68%). Additionally, when a single enantiomer of the chiral dearomatization agent was used, the elaborated cyclohexenes were able to be synthesized in enantioenriched forms (86-90% enantiomeric excess). Full characterization of 40 new compounds is provided that includes two-dimensional NMR, IR, electrochemical and in some cases crystallographic data.
RESUMO
The effects of an electron-withdrawing group on the organic chemistry of an η2-bound benzene ring are explored using the complex TpW(NO)(PMe3)(η2-PhCF3). This trifluorotoluene complex was found to undergo a highly regio- and stereoselective 1,2-addition reaction involving protonation of an ortho carbon followed by addition of a carbon nucleophile. The resulting 1,3-diene complexes can undergo a second protonation and nucleophilic addition with a range of nucleophiles including hydrides, amines, cyanide, and protected enolates. Interestingly, the addition of the second proton and nucleophile occurs in a 1,4-fashion, again with a high degree of regio- and stereocontrol. Oxidation of the metal allows for the isolation of highly substituted trifluoromethylcyclohexenes with as many as four stereocenters set by the metal. The ability to synthesize enantio-enriched organics was also demonstrated for a diene and a trisubstituted cyclohexene. Substitution from an enantio-enriched η2-dimethoxybenzene complex in neat trifluorotoluene yielded enantio-enriched trifluorotoluene complex, which was elaborated into cyclohexadienes and cyclohexenes with ee's ranging from 92 to 99%.
RESUMO
Multiple H2O2-forming mechanisms are accessible in Fe(porphyrin)-catalysed oxygen reduction, a key reaction in both fuel cell technologies and oxygen-utilizing enzymes. Our kinetic analysis reveals that the porphyrin secondary structure dictates the pathway for H2O2 formation. This approach is generalizable to other electrocatalytic processes and provides insight into the selectivity-determining steps.
RESUMO
Reactions are described for complexes of the form WTp(NO)(PMe3)(η2-arene) and various amines, where the arene is benzene or benzene with an electron-withdrawing substituent (CF3, SO2Ph, SO2Me). The arene complex is first protonated to form an η2-arenium species, which then selectively adds the amine. The resulting η2-5-amino-1,3-cyclohexadiene complexes can then be subjected to the same sequence with a second nucleophile to form 3-aminocyclohexene complexes, where up to three stereocenters originate from the arene carbons. Alternatively, 1,3-cyclohexadiene complexes containing an ester group at the 5 position (also prepared from an arene) can be treated with acid followed by an amine to form trisubstituted 3-aminocyclohexenes. When the amine is primary, ring closure can occur to form a cis-fused bicyclic γ-lactam. Highly functionalized cyclohexenes can be liberated from the tungsten through oxidative decomplexation. The potential utility of this methodology is demonstrated in the synthesis of the alkaloid γ-lycorane. An enantioenriched synthesis of a lactam precursor to γ-lycorane is also described. This compound is prepared from an enantioenriched version of the tungsten benzene complex. Regio- and stereochemical assignments for the reported compounds are supported by detailed 2D-NMR analysis and 13 molecular structure determinations (SC-XRD).
