RESUMO

Whether striatal fast-spiking interneurons are involved in cortical synchronization remains elusive. We performed acute microinjections of a selective FSI-AMPA receptor antagonist into the sensorimotor striatum of non-human primates to verify whether selective FSI inhibition within the sensorimotor striatum could potentially modify cortical excitability, thereby triggering focal seizures. Experiments were performed on three fascicularis monkeys. During each experimental session, low volumes of IEM-1460 (4-8 µL) were injected slowly at 1 µL/min. Spontaneous behavioral changes were classified according to the Racine scale modified for primates. These induced motor behaviors were correlated with electroencephalographic (EEG and EMG) measures. Power spectrum and time-frequency analysis were performed and compared between each period of interest. Pharmacological selective inhibition of striatal fast-spiking INs induced focal motor seizures. Back averaging confirmed that myoclonic activity was closely linked to cortical spikes-and-waves epileptic activity, with a significant increase in cortical EEG power in all studied frequency bands (p < .0001). Thus, striatal FSIs likely play a role in controlling cortical excitability through the cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical pathway. They may contribute to the pathophysiology of focal motor epilepsies by modulating the threshold at which focal motor seizures are triggered.

RESUMO

Manganese oxides (MnxOy) have been widely applied in various chemical industrial processes owing to their long lifetime, low cost and high abundance. They have been used as co-reactants for the elimination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs); however, their oxidation mechanism is not clearly established. In this theoretical study, interaction capacities between benzene (C6H6) and MnxOy clusters, which were modeled with MnO2 and Mn2O3 molecules, were investigated by quantum chemical computations using density functional theory (DFT) with the PBE-D3 functional. The interaction capacity between C6H6 and MnxOy was evaluated, and the probing of the initial stage of the C6H6 oxidation at a molecular level offers an in-depth oxidation reaction path. Interaction energies computed in several spin states, along with the analysis of the electron distribution using the quantum theory of atoms in molecules, natural bond orbital and Wiberg bond index techniques as well as local softness values and MO energies of fragments, point out that the interaction between C6H6 and Mn2O3 is stronger than that with MnO2, amounting to -43 and -35 kcal mol-1, respectively, and the metal atom is identified as the primary active site. During the oxide cluster-assisted oxidation, benzene firstly undergoes an oxidation reaction by active oxygen to generate intermediates such as hydroquinone and benzoquinone. The pathway involving p-benzoquinone as the product (noted as PR1) is the most energetically favored one through a transition structure lying at 19 kcal mol-1, below the energy reference of the reactants, leading to an energy barrier significantly lower than that of 36 kcal mol-1 found for the gas phase oxidation reaction with molecular oxygen without the assistance of the oxide clusters. Potential energy profiles illustrating the reaction paths and molecular mechanisms were described in detail.

RESUMO

We report on an outbreak of nongroupable Neisseria meningitidis-associated urethritis, primarily among men who have sex with men in southern Vietnam. Nearly 50% of N. meningitidis isolates were resistant to ciprofloxacin. This emerging pathogen should be considered in the differential diagnosis and management of urethritis.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols have been associated with a reduction in opioid consumption and a hastening in recovery in abdominal surgery. However, their impact on laparoscopic donor nephrectomy (LDN) has not been fully elucidated. The aim of this study is to evaluate opioid consumption and other relevant outcome measures before and after implementation of a unique LDN ERAS protocol. METHODS: 244 LDN patients were included in this retrospective cohort study. Forty-six underwent LDN prior to implementation of ERAS, whereas 198 patients received ERAS perioperative care. The primary outcome was daily oral morphine equivalent (OME) consumption averaged over the entire postoperative stay. Due to removal of preoperative oral morphine from the protocol partway through the study period, the ERAS group was further subdivided into morphine recipients and non-recipients for subgroup analysis. Secondary outcomes included the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), length of stay, pain scores, and other relevant measures. RESULTS: ERAS donors consumed significantly fewer average daily OMEs than Pre-ERAS donors (21.5 vs. 37.6, respectively; p < .0001). There were no statistically significant differences in OME consumption between morphine recipients and non-recipients. The ERAS group experienced less PONV (44.4% requiring one or more rescue antiemetic postoperatively, vs. 60.9% of Pre-ERAS donors; p = .008). CONCLUSIONS: A protocol pairing lidocaine and ketamine with a comprehensive approach to preoperative PO intake, premedication, intraoperative fluid management and postoperative pain control is associated with reduced opioid consumption in LDN.

RESUMO

Stress granules (SGs) are stress-induced biomolecular condensates which originate primarily from inactivated RNA translation machinery and translation initiation factors. SG formation is an important defensive mechanism for cell survival, while its dysfunction has been linked to neurodegenerative diseases. However, the molecular mechanisms of SG assembly and disassembly, as well as their impacts on cellular recovery, are not fully understood. More thorough investigations into the molecular dynamics of SG pathways are required to understand the pathophysiological roles of SGs in cellular systems. Here, we characterize the SG and cytoplasmic protein turnover in neuronal progenitor cells (NPCs) under stressed and non-stressed conditions using correlative STED and NanoSIMS imaging. We incubate NPCs with isotopically labelled (15N) leucine and stress them with the ER stressor thapsigargin (TG). A correlation of STED and NanoSIMS allows the localization of individual SGs (using STED), and their protein turnover can then be extracted based on the 15N/14N ratio (using NanoSIMS). We found that TG-induced SGs, which are highly dynamic domains, recruit their constituents predominantly from the cytoplasm. Moreover, ER stress impairs the total cellular protein turnover regimen, and this impairment is not restored after the commonly proceeded stress recovery period.

RESUMO

We used correlative transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry (NanoSIMS) imaging to quantify the contents of subvesicular compartments, and to measure the partial release fraction of 13 C-dopamine in cellular nanovesicles as a function of size. Three modes of exocytosis comprise full release, kiss-and-run, and partial release. The latter has been subject to scientific debate, despite a growing amount of supporting literature. We tailored culturing procedures to alter vesicle size and definitively show no size correlation with the fraction of partial release. In NanoSIMS images, vesicle content was indicated by the presence of isotopic dopamine, while vesicles which underwent partial release were identified by the presence of an 127 I-labelled drug, to which they were exposed during exocytosis allowing entry into the open vesicle prior to its closing again. Demonstration of similar partial release fractions indicates that this mode of exocytosis is predominant across a wide range of vesicle sizes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cleft rhinoplasty is a challenging form of nasal correction of both esthetic and functional deformities. The septal cartilage in many Asian patients are not sufficient and weak. Does a combination of the septal cartilage and the bony septum have both esthetic and functional benefits to secondary unilateral cleft rhinoplasty? PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty patients with a unilateral cleft lip palate underwent open rhinoplasty from October 2018 to January 2021. After preserving a 10 mm L-strut, the posterior cartilaginous and bony septum were harvested as an integrative unit. The osteocartilaginous graft was used as a caudal septal extension graft and an extended spreader graft. Correcting the asymmetry of the tip and tip projection followed. The intraoperative harvested composite graft was analyzed. Acoustic rhinometry and the 3-dimensional anthropometric measurements of the external nose were assessed before and after surgery. RESULTS: The osteocartilaginous unit was much larger than the cartilaginous part of this unit. The mean nasal tip height and the nasolabial angle increased significantly after surgery. The measurement of cross-sectional areas and volumes by acoustic rhinometry revealed that septorhinoplasty provided a significant increase in the function of both nasal cavities. CONCLUSIONS: This septal bony cartilaginous graft is effective for cleft lip nasal deformity when correcting the deviated septum, creating a supporting frame to correct the nasal tip asymmetry, improving function.

RESUMO

Designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs (DREADDs) are widely used in rodents to manipulate neuronal activity and establish causal links between structure and function. Their utilization in non-human primates (NHPs) is, however, limited and their efficacy still debated. Here, we recorded and examined the neuronal activity in the hM4Di DREADD-transduced and hM4Di DREADD-free GPe of two anesthetized animals following local intra-GPe microinjection of clozapine-N-oxide (CNO). Our results revealed that the neuronal activity of the well-isolated units recorded in the hM4Di DREADD-transduced GPe exhibited diverse patterns in timing and polarity (increase/decrease) of firing rate modulations following CNO injection. Nevertheless, significant decreases in activity were more frequent (and more pronounced) than significant increases in activity during CNO injection (6/18 vs. 3/18 units) and were exclusive after CNO Injection (8/18 units). In contrast, only one of the 8 well-isolated units recorded in hM4Di DREADD-free GPe exhibited a significant increase in activity after CNO injection. Overall, the number of units exhibiting a significant period-related decrease following CNO injection was significantly larger in hM4Di DREADD-transduced GPe than in the hM4Di DREADD-free GPe (8/18 [44.4%] vs. 0/8 [0%]). Moreover, postmortem histochemical analysis revealed that hM4Di DREADDs were expressed at high level in the GPe neurons located in the vicinity of the viral vector injection sites. Our results therefore show in vivo hM4Di DREADD-based inhibition of pallidal neurons in the NHP model and reinforce the view that DREADD technology can be effective in NHPs.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Whether the basal ganglia are involved in the cortical synchronization during focal seizures is still an open question. In the present study, we proposed to synchronize cortico-striatal activities acutely inducing striatal disinhibition, performing GABA-antagonist injections within the putamen in primates. METHOD: Experiments were performed on three fascicularis monkeys. During each experimental session, low volumes of bicuculline (0.5-4 µL) were injected at a slow rate of 1 µL/min. Spontaneous behavioral changes were classified according to Racine's scale modified for primates. These induced motor behaviors were correlated with electromyographic, electroencephalographic, and putaminal and pallidal local field potentials changes in activity. RESULTS: acute striatal desinhibition induced focal motor seizures. Seizures were closely linked to cortical epileptic activity synchronized with a striatal paroxysmal activity. These changes in striatal activity preceded the cortical epileptic activity and the induced myoclonia, and both cortical and subcortical activities were coherently synchronized during generalized seizures. INTERPRETATION: Our results strongly suggest the role of the sensorimotor striatum in the regulation and synchronization of cortical excitability. These dramatic changes in the activity of this "gating" pathway might influence seizure susceptibility by modulating the threshold for the initiation of focal motor seizures.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to find out whether the preoperative continuation of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACE-I) or angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) treatment is associated with intraoperative hypotension immediately after induction of general anesthesia in elective noncardiac surgeries. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Single institutional university hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Four hundred patients who underwent elective noncardiac surgery under general anesthesia, with ACE-I or ARB on their list of preoperative home medications, were included. INTERVENTION: Preoperative ACE-I and ARB use was evaluated, and patients were divided into an ACE-I/ARB group versus non-ACE-I/ARB group. MEASUREMENTS: The primary outcome measure was intraoperative hypotension after induction of general anesthesia. The secondary outcome measure was preoperative medication use, medications taken the morning of surgery, induction medication and dosage, and vasopressor medication use during induction. RESULTS: Three hundred forty-nine patients were included for final analysis. The mean admission American Society of Anesthesiologists status was 2.7 ± 0.5, age 65 ± 11 years, and body mass index 31 ± 6.9 kg/m2. There were no statistically significant changes between the no ACE-I/ARB group and the ACE-I/ARB group in systolic blood pressure (p = 0.853), diastolic blood pressure (p = 0.357), and heart rate (p = 0.220) change over the 15 minutes. There was no statistical difference in induction medication dose (propofol, fentanyl, and rocuronium) and pressor use (p = 0.137) for hypotension between the 2 groups. Statistically significant hypotension (p < 0.001) occurred in both groups equally over 15 minutes. CONCLUSION: Continuation of ACE-I/ARB on the day of surgery was not associated with increased risk of intraoperative hypotension upon induction and within 15 minutes of general anesthesia in elective noncardiac surgeries.

RESUMO

The absolute concentration and the compartmentalization of analytes in cells and organelles are crucial parameters in the development of drugs and drug delivery systems, as well as in the fundamental understanding of many cellular processes. Nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry (NanoSIMS) imaging is a powerful technique which allows subcellular localization of chemical species with high spatial and mass resolution, and high sensitivity. In this study, we combined NanoSIMS imaging with spatial oversampling with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging to discern the compartments (dense core and halo) of large dense core vesicles in a model cell line used to study exocytosis, and to localize 13C dopamine enrichment following 4-6 h of 150 µM 13C L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA) incubation. In addition, the absolute concentrations of 13C dopamine in distinct vesicle domains as well as in entire single vesicles were quantified and validated by comparison to electrochemical data. We found concentrations of 87.5 mM, 16.0 mM and 39.5 mM for the dense core, halo and the whole vesicle, respectively. This approach adds to the potential of using combined TEM and NanoSIMS imaging to perform absolute quantification and directly measure the individual contents of nanometer-scale organelles.

RESUMO

The magneto-plasmonic properties of Ag-Co composite nano-triangle arrays are investigated. Both plasmonic and magnetic properties of the samples are found to strongly depend on the composition ratio of Ag and Co. Composite nano-triangle arrays exhibit strong plasmonic properties and low magneto-optics (MO) effect with high composition of Ag, and vice versa. The enhanced magneto-optic effect is also observed to be coincident with the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties, i.e. the maximum Faraday effect occurs at the LSPR wavelength, which is due to locally high E-field. The composite triangle arrays with the 60% Co content show high plasmonic-MO performances characterized by magneto-optics-plasmonic correlation factor. All experimental results are confirmed by finite-difference time domain calculations.

RESUMO

Anaplasma marginale and A. platys were detected and characterized (16S rDNA sequence analysis) from dairy and indigenous cattle, and the latter in domestic dogs in Vietnam. A phylogenetic tree was inferred from 26 representative strains/species of Anaplasma spp. including 10 new sequences from Vietnam. Seven of our Vietnamese sequences fell into the clade of A. marginale and 3 into A. platys, with strong nodal support of 99 and 90%, respectively. Low genetic distances (0.2-0.4%) within each species supported the identification. Anaplasma platys is able to infect humans. Our discovery of this species in cattle and domestic dogs raises considerable concern about zoonotic transmission in Vietnam. Further systematic investigations are needed to gain data for Anaplasma spp. and members of Anaplasmataceae in animal hosts, vectors and humans across Vietnam.

RESUMO

Active surveillance of influenza A viruses of swine (IAV-S) involving 262 farms and 10 slaughterhouses in seven provinces in northern and southern Vietnam from 2010 to 2015 yielded 388 isolates from 32 farms; these viruses were classified into H1N1, H1N2, and H3N2 subtypes. Whole-genome sequencing followed by phylogenetic analysis revealed that the isolates represented 15 genotypes, according to the genetic constellation of the eight segments. All of the H1N1 viruses were entirely A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses, whereas all of the H1N2 and H3N2 viruses were reassortants among 5 distinct ancestral viruses: H1 and H3 triple-reassortant (TR) IAV-S that originated from North American pre-2009 human seasonal H1, human seasonal H3N2, and A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses. Notably, 93% of the reassortant IAV-S retained M genes that were derived from A(H1N1)pdm09, suggesting some advantage in terms of their host adaptation. Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis revealed that multiple introductions of A(H1N1)pdm09 and TR IAV-S into the Vietnamese pig population have driven the genetic diversity of currently circulating Vietnamese IAV-S. In addition, our results indicate that a reassortant IAV-S with human-like H3 and N2 genes and an A(H1N1)pdm09 origin M gene likely caused a human case in Ho Chi Minh City in 2010. Our current findings indicate that human-to-pig transmission as well as cocirculation of different IAV-S have contributed to diversifying the gene constellations of IAV-S in Vietnam. IMPORTANCE: This comprehensive genetic characterization of 388 influenza A viruses of swine (IAV-S) isolated through active surveillance of Vietnamese pig farms from 2010 through 2015 provides molecular epidemiological insight into the genetic diversification of IAV-S in Vietnam after the emergence of A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses. Multiple reassortments among A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses and enzootic IAV-S yielded 14 genotypes, 9 of which carried novel gene combinations. The reassortants that carried M genes derived from A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses became predominant, replacing those of the IAV-S that had been endemic in Vietnam since 2011. Notably, one of the novel reassortants likely caused a human case in Vietnam. Given that Vietnam is the second-largest pig-producing country in Asia, continued monitoring of IAV-S is highly important from the viewpoints of both the swine industry and human public health.

RESUMO

Whole-genome sequences of representative highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5) viruses from Vietnam were generated, comprising samples from poultry outbreaks and active market surveillance collected from January 2012 to August 2015. Six hemagglutinin gene clades were characterized. Clade 1.1.2 was predominant in southern Mekong provinces throughout 2012 and 2013 but gradually disappeared and was not detected after April 2014. Clade 2.3.2.1c viruses spread rapidly during 2012 and were detected in the south and center of the country. A number of clade 1.1.2 and 2.3.2.1c interclade reassortant viruses were detected with different combinations of internal genes derived from 2.3.2.1a and 2.3.2.1b viruses, indicating extensive cocirculation. Although reassortment generated genetic diversity at the genotype level, there was relatively little genetic drift within the individual gene segments, suggesting genetic stasis over recent years. Antigenically, clade 1.1.2, 2.3.2.1a, 2.3.2.1b, and 2.3.2.1c viruses remained related to earlier viruses and WHO-recommended prepandemic vaccine strains representing these clades. Clade 7.2 viruses, although detected in only low numbers, were the exception, as indicated by introduction of a genetically and antigenically diverse strain in 2013. Clade 2.3.4.4 viruses (H5N1 and H5N6) were likely introduced in April 2014 and appeared to gain dominance across northern and central regions. Antigenic analyses of clade 2.3.4.4 viruses compared to existing clade 2.3.4 candidate vaccine viruses (CVV) indicated the need for an updated vaccine virus. A/Sichuan/26221/2014 (H5N6) virus was developed, and ferret antisera generated against this virus were demonstrated to inhibit some but not all clade 2.3.4.4 viruses, suggesting consideration of alternative clade 2.3.4.4 CVVs.IMPORTANCE Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5) viruses have circulated continuously in Vietnam since 2003, resulting in hundreds of poultry outbreaks and sporadic human infections. Despite a significant reduction in the number of human infections in recent years, poultry outbreaks continue to occur and the virus continues to diversify. Vaccination of poultry has been used as a means to control the spread and impact of the virus, but due to the diversity and changing distribution of antigenically distinct viruses, the utility of vaccines in the face of mismatched circulating strains remains questionable. This study assessed the putative amino acid changes in viruses leading to antigenic variability, underscoring the complexity of vaccine selection for both veterinary and public health purposes. Given the overlapping geographic distributions of multiple, antigenically distinct clades of HPAI A(H5) viruses in Vietnam, the vaccine efficacy of bivalent poultry vaccine formulations should be tested in the future.

RESUMO

Hyperfine interaction (HFI), originating from the coupling between spins of charge carriers and nuclei, has been demonstrated to strongly influence the spin dynamics of localized charges in organic semiconductors. Nevertheless, the role of charge localization on the HFI strength in organic thin films has not yet been experimentally investigated. In this study, the statistical relation hypothesis that the effective HFI of holes in regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) is proportional to 1/N^{0.5} has been examined, where N is the number of the random nuclear spins within the envelope of the hole wave function. First, by studying magnetoconductance in hole-only devices made by isotope-labeled P3HT we verify that HFI is indeed the dominant spin interaction in P3HT. Second, assuming that holes delocalize fully over the P3HT polycrystalline domain, the strength of HFI is experimentally demonstrated to be proportional to 1/N^{0.52} in excellent agreement with the statistical relation. Third, the HFI of electrons in P3HT is about 3 times stronger than that of holes due to the stronger localization of the electrons. Finally, the effective HFI in organic light emitting diodes is found to be a superposition of effective electron and hole HFI. Such a statistical relation may be generally applied to other semiconducting polymers. This Letter may provide great benefits for organic optoelectronics, chemical reaction kinetics, and magnetoreception in biology.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Influenza A viruses of swine (IAV-S) cause acute and subclinical respiratory disease. To increase our understanding of the etiology of the subclinical form and thus help prevent the persistence of IAV-S in pig populations, we conducted active virologic surveillance in Vietnam, the second-largest pig-producing country in Asia, from February 2010 to December 2013. RESULTS: From a total of 7034 nasal swabs collected from clinically healthy pigs at 250 farms and 10 slaughterhouses, we isolated 172 IAV-S from swine at the weaning and early-fattening stages. The isolation rate of IAV-S was significantly higher among pigs aged 3 weeks to 4.5 months than in older and younger animals. IAV-S were isolated from 16 large, corporate farms and 6 family-operated farms from among the 250 farms evaluated. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that "having more than 1,000 pigs" was the most influential risk factor for IAV-S positivity. Farms affected by reassortant IAV-S had significantly larger pig populations than did those where A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses were isolated, thus suggesting that large, corporate farms serve as sites of reassortment events. CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrate the asymptomatic circulation of IAV-S in the Vietnamese pig population. Raising a large number of pigs on a farm has the strongest impact on the incidence of subclinical IAV-S infection. Given that only some of the corporate farms surveyed were IAV-S positive, further active monitoring is necessary to identify additional risk factors important in subclinical infection of pigs with IAV-S in Vietnam.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Handbook, an integrated MCH home-based record, was piloted in four provinces of Vietnam (Dien Bien, Hoa Binh, Thanh Hoa and An Giang). The study is aimed at assessing the changes in pregnant women's behavior towards the frequencies of their antenatal care service utilizations and their subsequent breastfeeding practices up to six months of age, through the MCH Handbook intervention. This is because the levels of pregnant women's knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP) towards their antenatal care service utilizations and exclusive breastfeeding practices have been previously neither analyzed nor reported in relation to MCH home-based records in the country. METHODS: To compare pre-intervention baseline in 2011, post-intervention data were collected in 2013. Structured interviews were conducted with randomly selected 810 mothers of children 6-18 months of age in the four provinces. A focus group discussion among mothers in each of four provinces was conducted. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in pregnant women's knowledge about the need for ≥3 antenatal care visits between pre- and post-interventions. Yet, the proportion of pregnant women who made ≥3 antenatal care visits in post-intervention was significantly higher than in pre-intervention. Thus, MCH Handbook is likely to have contributed to practicing ≥3 antenatal care visits, by changing their attitude. The proportion of mothers who know the need for exclusive breastfeeding necessary during the initial six months significantly increased between pre- and post-interventions. The proportion of those practicing exclusive breastfeeding significantly increased between pre- and post-interventions, too. Thus, MCH Handbook is likely to have contributed to the increase in both knowledge about and practices of exclusive breastfeeding. CONCLUSION: The results of study imply that MCH Handbook contributed to the increase in pregnant women's practices of ≥3 antenatal care visits and in their knowledge about and practice of exclusive breastfeeding. While there is room for improvement in the level of its data recording, the study confirmed that MCH Handbook plays a catalytic role in ensuring a continuum of maternal, newborn and child care. Note that this study is the first study that attempted to estimate pregnant women's behavioral changes through MCH Handbook intervention in Vietnam.

RESUMO

In spite of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 vaccination campaigns for domestic poultry, H5N1 viruses continue to circulate in Vietnam. To estimate the prevalence of avian influenza virus in Vietnam, surveillance was conducted between November 2011 and February 2013. Genetic analysis of 312 highly pathogenic avian influenza H5 viruses isolated from poultry in Vietnam was conducted and possible genetic relationships with strains from neighboring countries were investigated. As previously reported, phylogenetic analysis of the avian influenza virus revealed two H5N1 HPAI clades that were circulating in Vietnam. Clade 1.1, related to Cambodian strains, was predominant in the southern provinces, while clade 2.3.2.1 viruses were predominant in the northern and central provinces. Sequence analysis revealed evidence of active genetic evolution. In the gene constellation of clade 2.3.2.1, genotypes A, B, and B(II) existed during the 2011/2012 winter season. In June 2012, new genotype C emerged by reassortment between genotype A and genotype B(II), and this genotype was predominant in 2013 in the northern and central provinces. Interestingly, enzootic Vietnamese clade 2.3.2.1C H5 virus subsequently reassorted with N2, which originated from wild birds, to generate H5N2 highly pathogenic avian influenza, which was isolated from duck in the northeast region. This investigation indicated that H5N1 outbreaks persist in Vietnam and cause genetic reassortment with circulating viruses. It is necessary to strengthen active influenza surveillance to eradicate highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses and sever the link between highly pathogenic avian influenza and other circulating influenza viruses.
