RESUMO

Twisted bilayer graphene is created by slightly rotating the two crystal networks in bilayer graphene with respect to each other. For small twist angles, the material undergoes a self-organized lattice reconstruction, leading to the formation of a periodically repeated domain1-3. The resulting superlattice modulates the vibrational3,4 and electronic5,6 structures within the material, leading to changes in the behaviour of electron-phonon coupling7,8 and to the observation of strong correlations and superconductivity9. However, accessing these modulations and understanding the related effects are challenging, because the modulations are too small for experimental techniques to accurately resolve the relevant energy levels and too large for theoretical models to properly describe the localized effects. Here we report hyperspectral optical images, generated by a nano-Raman spectroscope10, of the crystal superlattice in reconstructed (low-angle) twisted bilayer graphene. Observations of the crystallographic structure with visible light are made possible by the nano-Raman technique, which reveals the localization of lattice dynamics, with the presence of strain solitons and topological points1 causing detectable spectral variations. The results are rationalized by an atomistic model that enables evaluation of the local density of the electronic and vibrational states of the superlattice. This evaluation highlights the relevance of solitons and topological points for the vibrational and electronic properties of the structures, particularly for small twist angles. Our results are an important step towards understanding phonon-related effects at atomic and nanometric scales, such as Jahn-Teller effects11 and electronic Cooper pairing12-14, and may help to improve device characterization15 in the context of the rapidly developing field of twistronics16.

We investigate the properties of a soft glass dual-core photonic crystal fiber for application in multicore waveguiding with balanced gain and loss. Its base material is a phosphate glass in a P2O5-Al2O3-Yb2O3-BaO-ZnO-MgO-Na2O oxide system. The separated gain and loss cores are realized with two cores with ytterbium and copper doping of the base phosphate glass. The ytterbium-doped core supports a laser (gain) activity under excitation with a pump at 1000 nm wavelength, while the CuO-doped is responsible for strong attenuation at the same wavelength. We establish conditions for an exact balance between gain and loss and investigate pulse propagation by solving a system of coupled generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equations. We predict two states of light under excitation with hyperbolic secant pulses centered at 1000 nm: 1) linear oscillation of the pulse energy between gain and loss core (P T-symmetry state), with strong power attenuation; 2) retention of the pulse in the excited gain core (broken P T-symmetry), with very modest attenuation. The optimal pulse energy levels were identified to be 100 pJ (first state) and 430 pJ (second state).

In the context of advanced nanoelectronics, two-dimensional semiconductors such as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are gaining considerable interest due to their ultimate thinness, clean surface and high carrier mobility. The engineering prospects offered by those materials are further enlarged by the recent realization of atomically sharp TMD-based lateral junctions, whose electronic properties are governed by strain effects arising from the constituents lattice mismatch. Although most theoretical studies considered only misfit strain, first-principles simulations are employed here to investigate the transport properties under external deformation of a three-terminal device constructed from a MoS2/WSe2/MoS2junction. Large modulation of the current is reported owing to the change in band offset, illustrating the importance of strain on the p-n junction characteristics. The device operation is demonstrated for both local and global deformations, even for ultra-short channels, suggesting potential applications for ultra-thin body straintronics.

RESUMO

While investigating the death of a hippopotamus at a zoo in Hanoi, Vietnam, we isolated SARS-CoV-2 and sequenced the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase gene from different organs. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the SARS-CoV-2 strain was closely related to 3 human SARS-CoV-2 strains in Vietnam.

Crosstalk between hormones and secondary metabolites regulates the interactions between plants and stress. However, little is known about the effects of hormone crosstalk on the concentration of flavonoids in seeds. In this study, we identified abscisic acid (ABA) as a negative regulator of flavonoid accumulation in soybean seeds under drought-stress conditions. Alterations in flavonoid accumulation at several intensities of water stress, followed by a recovery period, were measured during the soybean seed-filling stage. Low soil moisture (SM 10%) significantly decreased the total flavonoid content in seeds. The decline in flavonoid content was proportional to the severity of drought stress and was dependent on the activities of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) and chalcone synthase (CHS), two key phenylpropanoid pathway enzymes. The expression of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase 1 (GmPAL1), chalcone isomerase 1A (GmCHI1A), and chalcone synthase 8 (GmCHS8) was associated with phenolic and flavonoid accumulation in soybean seeds of plants subjected to drought stress. Interestingly, the expression levels of GmCHS8 were highly correlated with flavonoid levels under drought stress and water recovery conditions. Cinnamic acid, which is a biosynthesis precursor shared by both phenylpropanoid metabolism and salicylic acid (SA) biosynthesis, decreased under drought stress conditions. Notably, exogenous ABA suppressed the expression of GmPAL1, which encodes the first rate-limiting enzyme in the phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathway and affects downstream products such as SA and flavonoids. In conclusion, drought stress altered the phenylpropanoid-derived compounds, at least with regard to flavonoid and SA accumulation in seeds, which was regulated by antagonistic interactions with ABA.

The importance of phonons in the strong correlation phenomena observed in twisted-bilayer graphene (TBG) at the so-called magic-angle is under debate. Here we apply gate-dependent micro-Raman spectroscopy to monitor the G band line width in TBG devices of twist angles θ = 0° (Bernal), ∼1.1° (magic-angle), and ∼7° (large-angle). The results show a broad and p-/n-asymmetric doping behavior at the magic angle, in clear contrast to the behavior observed in twist angles above and below this point. Atomistic modeling reproduces the experimental observations in close connection with the joint density of electronic states in the electron-phonon scattering process, revealing how the unique electronic structure of magic-angle TBGs influences the electron-phonon coupling and, consequently, the G band line width. Overall, the value of the G band line width in magic-angle TBG is larger when compared to that of the other samples, in qualitative agreement with our calculations.

In the context of graphene-based composite applications, a complete understanding of charge conduction in multilayer reduced graphene oxides (rGO) is highly desirable. However, these rGO compounds are characterized by multiple and different sources of disorder depending on the chemical method used for their synthesis. Most importantly, the precise role of interlayer interaction in promoting or jeopardizing electronic flow remains unclear. Here, thanks to the development of a multiscale computational approach combining first-principles calculations with large-scale transport simulations, the transport scaling laws in multilayer rGO are unraveled, explaining why diffusion worsens with increasing film thickness. In contrast, contacted films are found to exhibit an opposite trend when the mean free path becomes shorter than the channel length, since conduction becomes predominantly driven by interlayer hopping. These predictions are favorably compared with experimental data and open a road toward the optimization of graphene-based composites with improved electrical conduction.

When confined in circular cavities, graphene relativistic charge carriers occupy whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in analogy to classical acoustic and optical fields. The rich geometrical patterns of the WGMs decorating the local density of states offer promising perspectives to devise new disruptive quantum devices. However, exploiting these highly sensitive resonances requires the transduction of the WGMs to the outside world through source and drain electrodes, a yet unreported configuration. Here, we create a circular p-n island in a graphene device using a polarized scanning gate microscope tip and probe the resulting WGM signatures in in-plane electronic transport through the p-n island. Combining tight-binding simulations and the exact solution of the Dirac equation, we assign the measured device conductance features to WGMs and demonstrate mode selectivity by displacing the p-n island with respect to a constriction. This work therefore constitutes a proof of concept for graphene whisperitronic devices.

Improving diet quality of preschool children is challenging in countries undergoing food environment and nutrition transition. However, few studies have sought to understand how mothers in these countries decide what and how to feed their children. This study aims to explore maternal experiences, perspectives and beliefs when making food choice decisions for preschool children in urban, peri-urban and rural areas in northern Vietnam. Two focus group discussions and 24 in-depth interviews were carried out and analysed using thematic analysis. The results showed that mothers across the urban-rural spectrum shared the intention to feed children safe, nutritious food for better health and weight gain while satisfying child food preferences to improve appetite and eating enjoyment. These food choice intentions were embedded within family food traditions, whereby mothers emphasised nutritious food and adopted strict feeding styles during lunch and dinner but were flexible and accommodating of child preferences during breakfast and side meals. These intentions were also embedded within the physical food environment, which provided a mix of healthy and unhealthy food through informal food retailers. Despite these intentions, mothers faced financial constraints and difficulties in managing children's refusal to chew, changes in eating mood and strong eating temperament. These findings support policies to limit the presence of unhealthy food in informal food retail and encourage meal-specific feeding strategies to help children enjoy nutritious food, transition from soft to textured food and become more cooperative during mealtime.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether mothers' perceived neighbourhood food access is associated with their own and their young children's consumption of animal-flesh food, fruits and vegetables in peri-urban areas of Cambodia. DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey measured food consumption frequency and perceived neighbourhood food access, the latter including six dimensions of food availability, affordability, convenience, quality, safety and desirability. Multivariate logistic regression was used to assess the association between perceived food access and food consumption. SETTING: Peri-urban districts of Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, Cambodia. PARTICIPANTS: 198 mothers of children between 6 and 24 months old. RESULTS: Over 25 % of the mothers and 40 % of the children had low consumption (< once a day) of either animal-flesh food or fruits and vegetables. Compared with perceived high food access, perceived low food access was associated with an adjusted 5·6-fold and 4·3-fold greater odds of low animal-flesh food consumption among mothers (95 % CI 2·54, 12·46) and children (95 % CI 2·20, 8·60), respectively. Similarly, relative to perceived high food access, perceived low food access was associated with 7·6-times and 5·1-times higher adjusted odds of low fruits and vegetables consumption among mothers (95 % CI 3·22, 18·02) and children (95 % CI 2·69, 9·83), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Mothers' perceived neighbourhood food access was an important predictor of their own and their young children's nutrient-rich food consumption in peri-urban Cambodia. Future work is needed to confirm our findings in other urban settings and examine the role of neighbourhood food environment in the consumption of both nutrient-rich and nutrient-poor food.

BACKGROUND: Street food plays a valuable role in several Asian countries including Vietnam. Improving the safety of street food is an important responsibility for many local food authorities. This study aims to characterize the business profile of fixed and mobile street food vendors, and to compare their compliance with the food safety criteria. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a questionnaire and observational checklist to assess the ten Vietnamese food safety criteria prescribed under Decision No. 3199/2000/QD-BYT for street food vendors in Can Tho city. A total of 400 street food vendors, composed of fixed and mobile vendors, in urban areas of the city were randomly selected for the survey. RESULTS: The study showed significant differences between the two types of street food vendors in educational level (p = 0.017); business profile, including types of foods vended, area in use, number of employees, training in food safety, and business registration paperwork; and the status of compliance with the ten-food hygiene and safety criteria (p < 0.01). Poisson regression analysis found that education attainment (IRR = 1.228, p = 0.015), food safety training (IRR = 4.855, p < 0.01), total business capital (IRR = 1.004, p = 0.031) and total area in use (IRR = 1.007, p = 0.001) appeared to be significantly positively associated with food safety and hygiene compliance. In contrast, mobile vending type was negatively associated with the likelihood of adhering to the ten criteria (IRR = 0.547, p = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS: These findings emphasize the need for training and education programs to improve food safety knowledge and practice among street food vendors. Basic infrastructure and services, especially clean water, proper sanitation, and waste disposal facilities, should be provided to help street food vendors better practice food safety and hygiene regulations.

The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of high-concentration hydrogen peroxide (HP) and carbamide peroxide (CP) bleaching solutions on the dentin-resin interface and the shear bond strength (SBS) of restorative materials. A total of 56 extracted human premolars were prepared with flat dentin windows and divided into groups according to the bleaching protocol: group A, bleached with 35% HP (n = 24); group B, bleached with 35% CP (n = 24); and group C, control, no bleaching (n = 8). Groups A and B were each divided into 3 subgroups according to the time of bonding: A0 or B0, bonded immediately after bleaching (n = 8); A1 or B1, bonded 1 week after bleaching (n = 8); and A2 or B2, bonded 2 weeks after bleaching (n = 8). The specimens in group C were bonded without prior bleaching. Scanning electron microscopic analysis was conducted to evaluate the length of the resin tags at the dentin-resin interface. For SBS testing, the specimens were loaded into a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. The mean resin tag lengths of groups that were bonded immediately (A0 and B0) or after a 1-week delay (A1 and B1) were significantly shorter than that of group C (P < 0.001; Kruskal-Wallis test), but the differences between the 2-week delayed bonding groups (A2 and B2) and group C were not statistically significant. The SBS values of both the 35% HP and 35% CP groups increased significantly with delayed bonding time (P < 0.05; 1-way analysis of variance). When bonding was delayed until 2 weeks after bleaching, the mean SBSs of the bleaching and control groups were not significantly different (P > 0.05; Tukey test).

BACKGROUND: Dengue is a mosquito-borne flavivirus present in many metropolitan cities of tropical countries. METHODS: During and after the dengue season (September 2018 to January 2019), we conducted a case-control study in order to determine the risk factors for dengue fever in Hanoi city, Vietnam. 98 dengue patients and 99 patients with other acute infections, such as Hepatitis B virus infection, were recruited at Department of Infectious Disease of Bach Mai national hospital in Hanoi. Patients were interviewed using a structured questionnaire covering demographic, housing, environmental factors and knowledge, attitude, and practice on dengue prevention and control. Univariate analysis and multivariable logistic regression were used to determine the risk factors of dengue status. RESULTS: The mean score of knowledge items and practice items was only 7.9 out of total 19 points and 3.9 out of total 17 points, respectively. While the mean score of attitude items was 4.8 out of total 6 points. Multivariable logistic regression indicated that older patients had lesser risk of getting dengue infection as compared to younger adults aged 16-30, and patients living in peri-urban districts were less likely to suffer of dengue fever than patients living in central urban districts (OR = 0.31; 95% CI 0.13-0.75). This study could not find any association with occupation, water storage habit, knowledge, attitude, or practice on dengue prevention. CONCLUSIONS: All patients had a relatively low level of knowledge and practice on dengue prevention and control. However, the attitude of the participants was good. We found that age group and living district were the risk factors correlated with the dengue status. Communication programs on raising dengue awareness should be repeated all year round and target particular groups of adolescents, younger adults, landlords and migrants from other provinces to improve their knowledge and encourage them to implement preventive measures against dengue fever.

Numerous theoretically proposed devices and novel phenomena have sought to take advantage of the intense pseudogauge fields that can arise in strained graphene. Many of these proposals, however, require fields to oscillate with a spatial frequency smaller than the magnetic length, while to date only the generation and effects of fields varying at a much larger length scale have been reported. Here, we describe the creation of short wavelength, periodic pseudogauge-fields using rippled graphene under extreme (>10%) strain and study of its effects on Dirac electrons. Combining scanning tunneling microscopy and atomistic calculations, we find that spatially oscillating strain generates a new quantization different from the familiar Landau quantization. Graphene ripples also cause large variations in carbon-carbon bond length, creating an effective electronic superlattice within a single graphene sheet. Our results thus also establish a novel approach of synthesizing effective 2D lateral heterostructures by periodically modulating lattice strain.

We experimentally investigate a nonlinear switching mechanism in a dual-core highly nonlinear optical fiber. We focus the input stream of femtosecond pulses on one core only, to identify transitions between inter-core oscillations, self-trapping in the cross core, and self-trapping of the pulse in the straight core. A model based on the system of coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations provides surprisingly good agreement with the experimental findings.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a zoonotic disease and has been reported around the world. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the sero-prevalence and phylogenetic analysis of HEV in Vietnam. Pig blood and fecal pooled samples were collected to assess the prevalence of HEV. We assessed the true prevalence (TP) of HEV from apparent prevalence (AP) by taking into account the sensitivity and specificity of diagnostic tests using a Bayesian approach. For phylogenetic analysis, the data compared with worldwide HEV reference strains including all eight genotypes (G1-G8) which were identified in previous study. RESULTS: A total of 475 sera and 250 fecal pooled samples were collected at slaughterhouses and pig farms from five provinces, in Viet Nam. Overall, the sero-AP of HEV was 58.53% (95% confidence interval: 53.95-62.70) while the sero-TP was slightly higher (65.43, 95% credible interval: 47.19-84.70). In terms of pooled samples, overall, the RNA-AP was 6.80% (95% confidence interval: 4.01-10.66). One strain in Hanoi, two strains in Dak Lak, seven strains in An Giang, four strains in Son La and two strains in Nghe An were isolated. The phylogenetic tree demonstrated that 19 Vietnamese strains were clustered into HEV 3 and 4. CONCLUSIONS: This study provided evidence that HEV is circulating in domestic pigs in Vietnam. From a public health perspective, it is very important to raise public awareness for high-risk groups (e.g. slaughterhouse workers, pig traders, farmers and market sellers) who have more opportunities to come in contact with pig and contaminated meats.

BACKGROUND: In Vietnam, lack of animal health information is considered a major challenge for pig production. The main objective of this study was to assess the seroprevalences of five pathogens [porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2), porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (M. hyo), Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) and leptospirosis] and to better characterize the farm movements through a survey. RESULTS: A total of 600 samples were collected from 120 farms from Bac Giang and Nghe An. Among unvaccinated herds, the highest seroprevalence was found for JE with 73.81% (95% CI: 68.39-78.74) in Bac Giang and 53.51% (95% CI 47.68-59.27) in Nghe An. Seroprevalences for PCV2 and M.hyo were 49.43% (95% CI: 45.06-53.80) and 46.06% (95% CI: 41.48-50.69) among unvaccinated animals. Accumulative co-infections for JE (86.25%) showed the highest level followed by M. hyo (66.25%) and PCV2 (62.50%). Three co-infections with JE had the highest positive rate (28.75%) followed by four co-infections (25.0%). Medium farms had relatively higher herd prevalences for all pathogens, except from leptospirosis. Overall, farmers exported/imported their pigs at the most 1-2 times every 6 months. Some respondents (5% for exportation and 20% for importation) had moved pigs more than 6 times over the last 6 months. CONCLUSIONS: Our study provided another pool of evidence that showed that PCV2, PRRS and H. hyo are endemic in pigs in Vietnam. Given the economic impacts of these pathogens elsewhere, the findings confirm the need for studies to evaluate the association between antibody response and clinical relevance as well as to assess the economic impact of co-infections at farm level. We also found that high seroprevalences of JE and leptospirosis were detected in pigs. From a pubic health point of view, it is crucial to raise public awareness especially for high risk occupations (mainly pig farm workers).

BACKGROUND: The One Health concept promotes the enhancement of human, animal and ecosystem health through multi-sectorial governance support and policies to combat health security threats. In Vietnam, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in animal and human health settings poses a significant threat, but one that could be minimised by adopting a One Health approach to AMR surveillance. To advance understanding of the willingness and abilities of the human and animal health sectors to undertake investigations of AMR with a One Health approach, we explored the perceptions and experiences of those tasked with investigating AMR in Vietnam, and the benefits a multi-sectorial approach offers. METHODS: This study used qualitative methodology to provide key informants' perspectives from the animal and human health sectors. Two scenarios of food-borne AMR bacteria found within the pork value chain were used as case studies to investigate challenges and opportunities for improving collaboration across different stakeholders and to understand benefits offered by a One Health approach surveillance system. Fifteen semi-structured interviews with 11 participants from the animal and six from the human health sectors at the central level in Hanoi and the provincial level in Thai Nguyen were conducted. RESULTS: Eight themes emerged from the transcripts of the interviews. From the participants perspectives on the benefits of a One Health approach: (1) Communication and multi-sectorial collaboration; (2) Building comprehensive knowledge; (3) Improving likelihood of success. Five themes emerged from participants views of the challenges to investigate AMR: (4) Diagnostic capacity; (5) Availability and access to antibiotics (6) Tracing ability within the Vietnamese food chain; (7) Personal benefits and (8) Managing the system. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study suggest that there is potential to strengthen multi-sectorial collaboration between the animal and human health sectors by building upon existing informal networks. Based on these results, we recommend an inclusive approach to multi-sectorial communication supported by government network activities to facilitate partnerships and create cross-disciplinary awareness and participation. The themes relating to diagnostic capacity show that both sectors are facing challenges to undertake investigations in AMR. Our results indicate that the need to strengthen the animal health sector is more pronounced.

BACKGROUND: Newly emergent and virulent strains of H7N9 avian influenza virus are rapidly spreading in China and threaten to invade Vietnam. We sought to introduce aerosol sampling for avian influenza viruses in Vietnam. METHODS: During October 2017, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health 2-stage aerosol samplers were assembled on a tripod and run for 4 hours. Concomitantly, up to 20 oropharyngeal (OP) swab samples were collected from chickens and ducks distanced at 0.2-1.5 m from each sampler. RESULTS: The 3 weeks of sampling yielded 30 aerosol samples that were 90% positive for influenza A, by quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction, and 116 OP swab sample pools (5 samples per pool) that were 47% positive. Egg cultures yielded 1 influenza A virus (not H5 or H7) from aerosol and 25 influenza A viruses from OP swab sample pools (5 were H5 positive). The association between positive sample types (over time and position) was strong, with 91.7% of positive OP pooled swab samples confirmed by positive aerosol samples and 81% of influenza A positive aerosol samples confirmed by positive OP swab samples. CONCLUSIONS: We posit that aerosol sampling might be used for early warning screening of poultry markets for novel influenza virus detection, such as H7N9. Markets with positive aerosol samples might be followed up with more focused individual bird or cage swabbing, and back-tracing could be performed later to locate specific farms harboring novel virus. Culling birds in such farms could reduce highly pathogenic avian influenza virus spread among poultry and humans.
