INTRODUCTION: The colour vision in bestrophinopathies has not been assessed in detail so far. The aim of this study was to explore the extent to which distinct types of bestrophinopathies differ in regard to colour vision deficiencies using Farnsworth Dichotomous D-15 and Lanthony Desaturated D-15 panel tests. METHODS: Both D-15 tests were performed in 52 eyes of 26 patients with Best vitelliform macular dystrophy (BVMD) and 10 eyes of 5 patients with autosomal recessive bestrophinopathy (ARB). Two methods were used for a quantitative assessment of the colour vision deficiencies: moment of inertia method and Bowman method. The following parameters were calculated: confusion angle, confusion index (C-index), selectivity index (S-index), total error score (TES), and colour confusion index (CCI). RESULTS: The median value of confusion angle for all stages of BVMD fell into a narrow range around 62, indicating normal results. The median confusion angle value was 57 in ARB patients within a very wide range down to -82, indicating non-specific deficits. These differences were statistically significant. Significantly abnormal C-index and CCI values were found only in ARB patients, being 2.0 and 1.49, respectively. The majority of parameters of D-15 tests were independent of the visual acuity in both bestrophinopathies. CONCLUSIONS: Elaborate evaluation of the D-15 panel tests might help establish a differential diagnosis between different bestrophinopathies, as the pattern of the colour vision loss is different between BVMD and ARB. The quantitative parameters of colour vision tests in bestrophinopathies are independent of the visual acuity.

Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is a rare disorder causing a sudden painless loss of visual acuity in one or both eyes, affecting young males in their second to third decade of life. The molecular background of the LHON is up to 90%, genetically defined by a point mutation in mitochondrial DNA. Recently, an autosomal recessive form of LHON (LHONAR1, arLHON) has been discovered, caused by biallelic variants in the DNAJC30 gene. This study provides the results of the DNAJC30 gene analysis in a large group of 46 Polish patients diagnosed with LHON, together with the clinical characterization of the disease. The c.152A>G (p.Tyr51Cys) substitution in the DNAJC30 gene was detected in all the patients as homozygote or compound heterozygote. Moreover, we identified one novel variant, c.293A>G, p.(Tyr98Cys), as well as two ultra-rare DNAJC30 variants: c.293A>C, p.(Tyr98Ser), identified to date only in one individual affected with LHONAR1, and c.130_131delTC (p.Ser44ValfsTer8), previously described only in two patients with Leigh syndrome. The patients presented here represent the largest group of subjects with DNAJC30 gene mutations described to date. Based on our data, the autosomal recessive form of LHON caused by DNAJC30 gene mutations is more frequent than the mitochondrial form in Polish patients. The results of our study suggest that Sanger sequencing of the single-exon DNAJC30 gene should be a method of choice applied to identify a molecular background of clinically confirmed LHON in Polish patients. This approach will help to reduce the costs of molecular testing.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye disease causing damage to the macular region of the retina where most of the photoreceptors responsible for central visual acuity are located. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small single-stranded non-coding RNA molecules that negatively regulate genes by silent post-transcriptional gene expressions. Previous studies have shown that changes in specific miRNAs are involved in the pathogenesis of eye diseases, including AMD. Altered expressions of miRNAs are related to disturbances of regulating oxidative stress, inflammation, angiogenesis, apoptosis and phagocytosis, which are known factors in the pathogenesis of AMD. Moreover, dysregulation of miRNA is involved in drusen formation. Thus, miRNAs may be used as potential molecular biomarkers for the disease and, furthermore, tailoring therapeutics to particular disturbances in miRNAs may, in the future, offer hope to prevent irreversible vision loss. In this review, we clarify the current state of knowledge about the influence of miRNA on the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of AMD. Our study material consisted of publications, which were found in PubMed, Google Scholar and Embase databases using "Age-related macular degeneration", "miRNA", "AMD biomarkers", "miRNA therapeutics" and "AMD pathogenesis" as keywords. Paper search was limited to articles published from 2011 to date. In the section "Retinal, circulating and vitreous body miRNAs found in human studies", we limited the search to studies with patients published in 2016-2021.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the radial peripapillary capillary plexus (RPCP) vessel density (VD) and the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in eyes successfully treated with pars plana vitrectomy for primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. METHODS: In this cross-sectional multicenter clinical study, eyes with a minimum 12-month follow-up were reexamined. The RPCP VD and RNFL thickness in the rhegmatogenous retinal detachment subfields of the affected eye (study group) were compared with the corresponding areas of the healthy fellow eyes (control group). RESULTS: Fifty-three eyes were included in the study. A significantly lower RPCP VD and RNFL thickness were observed in those subfields affected by rhegmatogenous retinal detachment compared with those of the control group (P < 0.001). No statistically significant differences were observed between undetached subfields in the study group and their corresponding images in the control group. In the study group, a significant correlation was found between RPCP VD and RNFL thickness in subfields with detached retina (r = 0.393, P < 0.001) and undetached retina (r = 0.321, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Radial peripapillary capillary plexus VD changes were found in the subfields of detached retina successfully treated with pars plana vitrectomy and they correlated with RNFL thinning. These data suggest a coexistence of neuronal and microvascular damage in patients affected by rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.

This work presents a quick clinical protocol for dark-adapted chromatic (DAC) perimetry as well as a novel clinical tool, scotopic chromatic pupil campimetry (CPC). The goal of the study was to explore the applicability of these methods in a clinical setting, their test-retest repeatability, and the congruence of the results. Local rod sensitivity was assessed at 36 locations within 30° eccentricity of the visual field in 15 healthy subjects (mean age 43 ± 16 years; 7 females and 8 males) with DAC perimetry (red and cyan stimuli) and CPC 2 times in repeated measurements. The duration of individual measurements was 370 ± 5 s for CPC and 366 ± 62 s for DAC perimetry. The intraclass correlation (ICC) coefficient was 0.53 for DAC perimetry cyan stimuli, 0.67 for red stimuli, and 0.93 for CPC. However, the spatial resolution of CPC was substantially smaller than in DAC perimetry. We did not find a correlation of DAC perimetry and CPC measurements on the global or the local level. In comparison to DAC perimetry, CPC shows a superior intervisit repeatability in detecting functional changes in the rod population in an objective way with lower spatial resolution. Our results also indicate that these 2 methods measure the rod function in different ways and could thus constitute complementary scotopic functional diagnostics.

PURPOSE: To report cases of central retinal vein occlusion in otherwise healthy children showing combined genetic variants of thrombophilia. METHODS: Ophthalmological, pediatric records and genetic analyses of thrombophilia-associated variants were retrospectively reviewed in four children diagnosed with central retinal vein occlusion. Genetic screening, including Factor XII, platelet glycoprotein (GP) IIIa PlA1/A2 (rs5918), and GPIa/IIa C807T (rs1126643) and G873A (rs1062535) mutations, was performed by PCR amplification and Sanger sequencing of PCR products. The genotyping of prothrombin G20210A, Leiden Factor V G1691A, methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T/A1298C mutations, and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 4G/5G polymorphisms was performed by real-time PCR with Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) probes. RESULTS: The genotyping analysis identified combined genetic variants of thrombophilia in each patient. Mutations for MTHFR (C677T) and GPIIIa PlA1/A2 were detected in Case 1, mutations for MTHFR (C677T), GPIIIa PlA1/A2, and GPIa/IIa in Case 2, mutations for MTHFR (C677T) and GPIa/IIa in Case 3, and mutation for MTHFR (A12986C), GPIIIa Pl A1/A2, and GPIa/IIa in Case 4. Preventive low-dose aspirin therapy was prescribed to all patients. During a follow-up of 5 and 8 years, neither central retinal vein occlusion recurrence nor any other thrombotic event was observed in Cases 1 and 2, respectively. CONCLUSION: In otherwise healthy children presenting central retinal vein occlusion, genetic investigations for thrombophilia-associated variants should be considered, given the possible long-term benefit of aspirin prophylaxis.

Peripapillary hyperreflective ovoid mass-like structures (PHOMS) are a new retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) finding. The Optic Disc Drusen Studies Consortium had made recommendations to distinguish PHOMS from true optic disc drusen (ODD) in 2018. While publications on PHOMS have increased since then, the accuracy of the definition of PHOMS and reliability of detection is unknown. In this multi-rater study, we demonstrate that the 2018 definition of PHOMS resulted in a poor multi-rater kappa of 0.356. We performed a Delphi consensus process to develop a consistent and refined definition of PHOMS with clear principles around the nature of PHOMS and how they differ from normal anatomy. Fifty explanatory teaching slides, provided as supplementary material, allowed our expert group of raters to achieve a good level of agreement (kappa 0.701, 50 OCT scans, 21 raters). We recommend adopting the refined definition for PHOMS.

BACKGROUND: To examine morphological and functional results after pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas tamponade due to macula-on and macula-off rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) during 6 months of the follow-up. METHODS: The study included 62 eyes that underwent successful PPV with SF6 tamponade with macula-on (34 eyes) and macula-off (28 eyes) RRD preoperatively. The best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), Amsler test, M-charts, optical coherence tomography (OCT) and microperimetry were performed at 1, 3 and 6 months postoperatively. RESULTS: Results of the Amsler test were abnormal postoperatively in 54% of the patients in the group with macula-off and in 32% of the patients with macula-on RRD. Horizontal M-charts improved significantly from 0.33 to 0.2, vertical M-charts- from 0.29 to 0.17 during 6 months of the follow-up. There was a significant increase in the central retinal thickness (CRT) and average thickness (AT) between follow-up examinations only in the macula-off group. 29 of 62 eyes (47%) after surgery (equally with macula-on and macula-off RRD) showed morphological changes in OCT in the macular region, as epiretinal membrane, macular edema, subretinal fluid or alterations of the outer layers of the retina. The average threshold in microperimetry increased significantly within both groups during the follow-up. CONCLUSION: Both horizontal and vertical M-charts scores, as were as microperimetry sensitivity improved significantly during the 6 months of the follow-up both in macula-on and macula-off group. Although PPV with SF6 gas tamponade was successful, almost half of eyes revealed anatomical changes in the macular region in OCT both with macula-on and macula-off group. A large number of preclinical studies suggest the involvement of resveratrol in the prevention and treatment of eye diseases induced by oxidative stress and inflammation. We tested the hypothesis that resveratrol influences many pathways of in vitro and in vivo models of diabetic retinopathy through a systematic literature review of original articles. The review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. A literature search of all original articles published until April 2019 was performed. The terms "resveratrol" in combination with "retina", "retinal pathology", "diabetic retinopathy" and "eye" were searched. Possible biases were identified with the adopted SYRCLE's tool. Eighteen articles met inclusion/exclusion criteria for full-text review. Eleven of them included in vitro experiments, 11 studies reported in vivo data and 3 studies described both in vitro and in vivo experiments. Most of the in vivo studies did not include data that would allow exclusion of bias risks, according to SYRCLE's risk of bias tool. Both in vitro and in vivo data suggest anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative actions of resveratrol in models of diabetic retinopathy. However, results on its anti-angiogenic effects are contradictory and need more rigorous studies.

PURPOSE: To measure the area of central scotoma obtained with semi-automated kinetic perimetry (SKP) in patients suffering from tobacco-alcohol toxic neuropathy (TATN). METHODS: Twelve eyes of six patients with TATN were examined with SKP. Area of central scotoma was measured in square degrees (deg2). Additionally, static automated perimetry (SAP) within 60° was performed in each patient. RESULTS: Area of central scotoma was 41.8 deg2 for III4e isopter, 22.9 deg2 for I4e isopter and 16.1 deg2 for I2e isopter in TATN patients. SAP revealed central scotoma in all patients. There was 100% of accordance between two methods. CONCLUSION: SKP is comparable with SAP in assessing central scotoma. SKP offers advantage of measuring central scotoma and assessing remaining peripheral visual field in TATN, even with low incidence and prevalence of this clinical entity.

BACKGROUND: Endophthalmitis is potentially devastating intraocular inflammation following eye trauma or surgery. We describe the visual outcomes and causative pathogens in acute bacterial postoperative and posttraumatic endophthalmitis treated with immediate pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with Vancomycin dissolved in the infusion fluid. METHODS: Clinical records of consecutive 30 patients with postoperative endophthalmitis and 15 patients with posttraumatic endophthalmitis were evaluated. Vancomycin was administered constantly in the infusion fluid at the time of complete PPV. Cultures were prepared from anterior chamber paracentesis. The mean follow-up period was 13 months. RESULTS: The visual acuities were improved in 38 cases (84 %) and remained stable in seven cases (16 %). Median post-PPV visual acuity was 1.0 logMAR in a group with postoperative endophthalmitis and 1.3 logMAR in a group with posttraumatic endophthalmitis (p < 0.05). Twenty cases (44 %) were culture-positive (Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Enterococcus and Bacillus spp). CONCLUSIONS: Early PPV with Vanomycin in infusion leads to vision improvement in patients with both posttraumatic and postoperative endophthalmitis. In our series of 45 cases culture was positive only in half of the cases.

PURPOSE: To analyze the levels of lysophosphatidic acids (LPAs) and autotaxin (ATX) in undiluted vitreous of untreated patients with retinal vein occlusion (RVO). METHODS: Sixty-four vitreous samples (40 RVO, 24 controls with idiopathic floaters) were analyzed in this retrospective case series using LC/MS for LPAs 16:0, 18:0, 18:1, 20:4, and ELISA kits or Luminex technology for ATX, angiopoetin-1 (ANG-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-7 (IL-7), interleukin-8 (IL-8), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). LPA and ATX levels were correlated with the visual acuity, central macular thickness (CMT), average retinal thickness (AvT), vitreal cytokine levels and with each other. RESULTS: Levels of every LPA species tested and ATX were significantly increased in the vitreous fluid from all patients with RVO (total LPAs: 968.0 ± 842.3 nM; ATX: 2.5 ± 1.02 nM) compared with controls (total LPAs: 225.2 ± 292.8 nM, P < 0.0001; ATX: 1.9 ± 1.00 nM, P = 0.005). There were strong positive correlations between the vitreal levels of IL-6, IL-8, MCP-1, VEGF and LPAs. CONCLUSION: Levels of LPAs and ATX were positively correlated with proinflammatory cytokines and VEGF and might thus play an important role in the development of macular edema secondary to RVO.

BACKGROUND: Several techniques for fixation of the posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) have been developed. We evaluate long-term functional outcomes and safety of posterior chamber IOL implantation using Hoffman scleral haptic fixation and sutureless Sharioth technique in patients with posttraumatic and postoperative aphakia. METHODS: This retrospective case-series included 42 eyes operated by one surgeon. The data including demographic data, ocular history, preoperative, early postoperative and final best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), rate of complications as well as postoperative IOL position were collected. The mean follow-up was 14.5 months. Hoffman haptic scleral fixation was performed in 31 eyes, Sharioth technique-in 11 eyes. Aphakia was due to eye trauma (19) or complicated cataract surgery (23). RESULTS: Overall, the final BCVA improved in 26 eyes, did not change in 5 eyes, and worsened in 11 eyes. No significant differences in BCVA were found between groups operated with Hoffman scleral fixation and Sharioth technique. Postoperatively, we noticed two dislocations of IOL fixated using Sharioth technique and none after Hoffman technique. No severe complications were observed. CONCLUSION: Both transscleral fixation techniques are feasible methods of secondary IOL implantation in posttraumatic and postoperative aphakia. with low incidence of complications, however visual outcomes are diverse.

Diabetic macular edema is the major cause of vision impairment in the diabetic population. Its treatment requires a multidisciplinary approach and the use of both systemic and local therapies. Current management includes the vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors and steroids administered as intravitreal injections, as well as laser therapy and surgical treatment. Treatment modalities in diabetic macular edema have changed in recent years, after the introduction of vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors, which are gradually replacing laser photocoagulation. All anti-VEGF agents tested so far showed efficacy in the treatment of diabetic macular edema. Due to structural differences, the therapeutic efficacy of different anti-VEGF products varies. According to recent results, 2,0 mg of aflibercept is more effective than 0,3 mg of ranibizumab in patients with lower visual acuity at baseline. Additionally, its superiority was shown in reducing the number of required macular laser photocoagulation procedures. This article provides a comprehensive overview of available therapeutic modalities based on laser photocoagulation, anti-VEGF agents, steroid injections or surgical interventions, and discusses their efficacy in patients with diabetic macular edema.

PURPOSE: To test the hypothesis whether semi-automated kinetic perimetry (SKP) provides additional information to static automated perimetry (SAP) in the assessment of the remaining visual field in end-stage glaucoma, as defined by disc appearance (cup-to-disc ratio worse than 0.9) and SAP criteria (MD worse than 20 dB). METHODS: Fifty eyes of 44 patients presenting with end-stage glaucoma were examined first with SAP within the central 30° using stimulus size III, followed by SKP within 90° using test targets III4e and V4e. RESULTS: Overall, SKP provided additional information over SAP in more than half (54%) of the cases. In 16 instances (32%), SKP revealed visual field island beyond 30° that was undetected by SAP. In eight cases (16%), SKP showed both a central island and peripheral island of visual field. In three cases (6%) altitudinal scotomatous loss was found using SKP, but not in SAP. In 23 cases (46%) the central visual field island was defined both with SAP and SKP. The mean examination duration was 4 min for SAP and 9 min for SKP. CONCLUSIONS: In clinical practice, SKP with III4e and V4e test targets provides more information than 30° SAP regarding the remaining peripheral VF in patients with end-stage glaucoma; however, a longer test time is required for SKP.

BACKGROUND: Open globe injuries complicated with the presence of an intraocular foreign body constitute a vision threatening condition. PURPOSE: To present the results of pars plana vitrectomy in patients with intraocular foreign body. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Medical records of 22 patients were analyzed. Retrospective analysis of data included visual acuity, age, gender and type of injury. RESULTS: All patients were men and the mean age was 37 years. All injuries occurred while working with a hammer. All patients were treated with pars plana vitrectomy combined with intraocular foreign body removal and internal limiting membrane peeling. The visual acuities improved in 9 cases (41%), in 13 cases (59%) the deterioration of visual acuity was observed, no eye was enucleated. In 14 eyes pars plana vitrectomy was combined with lens removal, in 14 eyes silicone oil was used as a tamponade. CONCLUSIONS: Surgical intervention with pars plana vitrectomy combined with intraocular foreign body removal and cataract extraction may preserve severely traumatized eyes and maintain or even improve vision. ocular trauma, vitrectomy, intraocular foreign body.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between the area of isopters obtained using semi-automated kinetic perimetry (SKP) and Vigabatrin dosage in epilepsy patients with pretreatment baseline examination during 2-years of the follow-up. METHODS: 29 epilepsy patients were included into the study, but 15 individuals were excluded due to cognitive impairment, intracranial pathologies or eye diseases. Finally, 14 patients were examined with SKP before VGB treatment and after 6, 12, 18, and 24 months. Reaction time (RT)-corrected areas of three isopters (III4e, I4e and I2e) were measured for each of five examinations and compared intra-individually during 2-years period. Additionally, six epilepsy patients on other antiepileptic drugs were examined five times with SKP as a control. RESULTS: There was a significant decrease of I2e, I4e and III4e isopters' area during the follow-up of two years. Correlation was found between the I2e isopter's area and both cumulative dose and mean daily dose of VGB. With increasing RT, there was decreasing of all isopters' area in patients receiving VGB. In epilepsy patients who were not receiving VGB, there were no significance differences in isopters' area during follow-up. CONCLUSION: There was attenuation of area of III4e, I4e and I2e isopters obtained with SKP during a period of 2 years. RT, the cumulative dose and the mean daily dose of VGB influenced isopters' area obtained with SKP.

Neuroplasticity is a complex process that is heightened during time-sensitive periods of pre- and postnatal brain development. It continues, albeit to a lesser extent, throughout adolescence and young adulthood. Congenital visual deprivation is well-known and explored in human-model behavioral research. In this study, we review existing research on neuroadaptations and neuroplasticity of the visual pathway as a result of inherited retinal diseases (IRD), focusing on data concerning congenital bilateral visual deprivation in humans published in PubMed in the past 5 years, including 18 articles. We highlight evidence about the anatomical and behavioral aspects of neuroplasticity as different brain responses to different types of visual deprivation. We also focus on various very interesting aspects of the cross-modal functional reorganization of the visual and auditory cortex as an example of brain plasticity due to combined visual and auditory loss. Our study shows that central nervous system magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) advancements have allowed researchers to report previously elusive anatomical evidence. Patients with a known mechanism of IRD-examined with high magnetic field MRI and functional MRI-have been proven to be adequate models to explore neuroadaptations of the visual pathway due to bilateral, early, and late visual deprivation.

Aim: To investigate the efficacy and safety profile of T-shaped pars plana scleral incision technique in removing large intraocular foreign bodies, during 23-gauge pars plana vitrectomy. Methods: Retrospective interventional case series that included patients diagnosed with a large intraocular foreign body (IOFB). Possible postoperative complications were recorded 24 h, 1 month, 3 and 6 months postoperatively. Results: Thirty eyes of 30 patients (48 ± 5 years old) were enrolled. All IOFBs were successfully removed: mean diameters of 7.8 ± 2.0 mm and 2.6 ± 0.3 mm. Silicone oil and sulfur hexafluoride were used in 27 and 3 eyes, respectively. Lensectomy was performed in 27 eyes. Intraocular lens was implanted at first attempt in 12 eyes; during a second operation in 12 eyes and 6 eyes remained aphakic. At any follow-up, no signs of postoperative complications were observed. Secondary retinal detachment occurred in 12 eyes. Mean preoperative corrected distance visual acuity was 0.04, on the Snellen scale; it increased to 0.07, at last follow-up. Mean intraocular pressure was 17.97 mmHg. All eyes were preserved. Conclusion: T-shaped scleral incision could be an effective, safe and easy-to-perform standard procedure to remove large IOFBs during pars plana vitrectomy, without increasing the risk of surgical complications and additional damage to the ocular tissues.

BACKGROUND: Vision has a key role in children's neuromotor, cognitive and social development. Children with visual impairment attain developmental milestones at later stages and are at higher risk of developing psychological disorders and social withdrawn. AIMS: We performed a scoping review to summarize the mostly used instruments assessing the impact of visual impairment on quality of life, functioning and participation of children and adolescents. In addition, the main findings of the included studies are discussed. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: We searched for papers assessing quality of life, functioning and participation of children and adolescents with visual impairment from 0 to 18 years old conducted between 2000 and 2023. OUTCOMES AND RESULTS: In total, 69 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. Child self-report, caregivers-proxy and self-report questionnaires as well as interviews were used. The results showed that quality of life, functioning and participation are significantly reduced in children and adolescents with visual impairment, and that the impact depends on different factors (e.g., severity of the impairment, age). CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Considering the significant impact of visual impairment on quality of life, functioning and participation on this population, it is fundamental to develop integrated and multi-dimensional assessment programs that evaluate the impact of visual impairment on those dimensions considering different contexts of life (e.g., family, school, leisure time). WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS?: The present review aims to give an overview of what is known about the impact of visual impairment on quality of life, functioning and participation of children and adolescents. We assumed a biopsychosocial perspective which, in line with the definition of health by the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (WHO, 2001), considered how body functions and structures, functioning, participation and environmental factors dynamically interact to define the health, or the disease, status of a person at a certain moment of life. We reported the most used instruments for the assessment of quality of life, participation, and functioning, with a specific interest on Patient-Reported Outcome Measures and self-report measures. By reporting the different instruments used, we gave a broad overview about the available tools that can be used in clinical as well as in research field to assess quality of life, functioning and participation in this population. Additionally, the review of the existing literature allowed us to demonstrate that those dimensions are negatively impacted by visual impairment and thus they should be considered in the assessment programs. Specifically, there is the need to provide more integrated assessment programs that investigate the impact of visual impairment on children and adolescents' social and emotional wellbeing, everyday functioning and social relationship, considering their subjective experience together with the one of caregivers, teachers, health care professionals, and other relevant adults involved in their life. Additionally, it is essential to plan and implement multidimensional assessment programs that consider how all areas of life are differently impacted by visual impairment.
