RESUMO

Dry reforming of methane (DRM) has been emerging as a viable solution to achieving carbon neutrality enhanced by the Paris Agreement as it converts the greenhouse gases of CO2 and CH4 into industrially useful syngas. However, there have been limited studies on the DRM catalyst under mild operating conditions with a high dilution gas ratio due to their deactivation from carbon coking and metal sintering. Herein, we apply the triple-phase boundary (TPB) concept to DRM catalyst via exsolution phenomenon that can secure elongated TPB by controlling the Fe-doping ratio in perovskite oxide. Remarkably, the exsolved catalyst with prolongated TPB shows exceptional CO2 and CH4 conversion rates of 95.9 % and 91.6 %, respectively, stable for 1000 hours under a dilution-free system. DFT calculations confirm that the Lewis acid of support and Lewis base of metal at the TPB promote the adsorption of reactants, resulting in lowering the overall CO2 dissociation and CH4 dehydrogenation energy.

RESUMO

Dry reforming of methane (DRM) is a feasible solution to address the reduction of greenhouse gases stipulated by the Paris Climate Agreement, given that it adds value by converting trivial gases, CO2 and CH4 , simultaneously into useful syngas. However, the conventional Ni catalyst undergoes deactivation due to carbon coking and particle agglomeration. Here we demonstrate a highly efficient and durable DRM catalyst: exsolved Co-Ni-Fe ternary alloy nanoparticles on the layered perovskite PrBaMn1.7 Co0.1 Ni0.2 O5+δ produced by topotactic exsolution. This method readily allows the generation of a larger number of exsolved nanoparticles with enhanced catalytic activity above that of Ni monometallic and Co-Ni bimetallic particles. The enhancement is achieved by the upshift of the d-band center of Co-Ni-Fe relative to those of Co-Ni and Ni, meaning easier charge donation to the adsorbate. Furthermore, the exsolved catalyst shows exceptional stability, with continuous DRM operation for about 350 hours.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study investigated the cumulative effects of depressive symptoms on cognitive function over time in community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: Data were investigated from 2,533 community-dwelling older adults who participated in the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA) from the 5th (2014) to the 8th wave (2020). The association between cumulative depressive symptoms and cognitive function was identified through multiple regression analysis. RESULTS: When the multiple regression analysis was conducted from each wave, the current depressive symptoms scores and cognitive function scores were negatively associated, regardless of the waves (B5th = -0.26, B6th = -0.26, B7th = -0.26, and B8th = -0.27; all p < .001). Further, when all the previous depressive symptoms scores were added as explanatory variables in the 8th wave, the current one (B8th = -0.09, p < .001) and the previous ones (B5th = -0.11, B6th = -0.09, and B7th = -0.13; all p < .001) were also negatively associated with the cognitive function score. The delta R², which indicates the difference between the model's R² with and without the depressive symptoms scores, was greater in the model with all the previous and current depressive symptoms scores (6.4%) than in the model with only the current depressive symptoms score (3.6%). CONCLUSION: Depressive symptoms in older adults have a long-term impact. This results in an accumulated adverse effect on the cognitive function. Therefore, to prevent cognitive decline in older adults, we suggest detecting their depressive symptoms early and providing continuous intervention to reduce exposure to long-term depressive symptoms.

RESUMO

This study investigated associations between weekend catch-up sleep (WCUS) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in 15,837 participants from the 7th (2016-2018) Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. We categorized WCUS durations into four groups: none (≤ 0 h [h]), short (> 0 h, ≤ 1 h), medium (> 1 h, ≤ 2 h), and long (> 2 h), and performed complex samples logistic regression and likelihood ratio χ2 test. The study found significant associations in women for the European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D) index and three EQ-5D subdomains (self-care, usual activities, and anxiety/depression) with the WCUS durations, but no significant association in men. Compared to the non-WCUS, the short or medium WCUS was positively associated with the EQ-5D index and EQ-5D subdomains (usual activities and anxiety/depression) in women, while the long WCUS significantly reduced the quality of life in the self-care domain. In an additional subgroup analysis by age, middle-aged and elderly women had a more noticeable effect of WCUS on HRQoL than young women, and the short or medium WCUS improved HRQoL in middle-aged and elderly women in general. Therefore, we recommend appropriate WCUS durations to improve HRQoL, considering both gender and age.

RESUMO

Recent studies have shed light on alterations to the proinflammatory tumor microenvironment as a significant carcinogenic mechanism. Despite previous studies on associations between proinflammatory cytokines and lung cancer risk, few studies have been conducted in Asian populations. This study aimed to investigate associations between proinflammatory cytokines and lung cancer risk, considering histological types, in the Korean general population. We carried out a case-cohort study on the Korean National Cancer Center Community (KNCCC) cohort (lung cancer cases: 136, subcohort: 822). Pre-diagnostic serum levels of proinflammatory cytokines (i.e., IL-6, TNF-α, IL-1ß, IFN-γ, and IL-10) were measured using Quantikine® ELISA. A Cox proportional-hazards regression analysis was conducted. In this study, serum levels of IL-6, IL-1ß, and IFN-γ were associated with lung cancer risk. IL-6 was associated with lung cancer, regardless of the histological type. IL-1ß had an association only with adenocarcinoma, while IFN-γ had an association only with squamous-cell carcinoma. This study shows associations between serum levels of IL-6, IL-1ß, and IFN-γ and lung cancer risk, underscoring the potential of these cytokines to act as risk biomarkers. The utilization of these biomarkers for risk prediction may hold the promise of facilitating the identification of the high-risk population.

RESUMO

To significantly increase the amount of exsolved particles, the complete phase reconstruction from simple perovskite to Ruddlesden-Popper (R-P) perovskite is greatly desirable. However, a comprehensive understanding of key parameters affecting the phase reconstruction to R-P perovskite is still unexplored. Herein, we propose the Gibbs free energy for oxygen vacancy formation in Pr0.5(Ba/Sr)0.5TO3-δ (T = Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni) as the important factor in determining the type of phase reconstruction. Furthermore, using in-situ temperature & environment-controlled X-ray diffraction measurements, we report the phase diagram and optimum 'x' range required for the complete phase reconstruction to R-P perovskite in Pr0.5Ba0.5-xSrxFeO3-δ system. Among the Pr0.5Ba0.5-xSrxFeO3-δ, (Pr0.5Ba0.2Sr0.3)2FeO4+δ - Fe metal demonstrates the smallest size of exsolved Fe metal particles when the phase reconstruction occurs under reducing condition. The exsolved nano-Fe metal particles exhibit high particle density and are well-distributed on the perovskite surface, showing great catalytic activity in fuel cell and syngas production.
