RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The modified Dunn procedure, which is based on the development of an extended retinacular flap containing the blood supply for the femoral head, allows anatomic reestablishment in patients with moderate to severe slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). Some controversy exists regarding the short-term to midterm risk of avascular necrosis (AVN) and other complications resulting from the surgical technique. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What percentage of patients treated with an extended retinacular flap during the modified Dunn procedure for SCFE with a moderate (slip angle from 30° to 60°) or severe slip (slip angle equal or greater than 60°) develop symptomatic AVN, and what percentage underwent further surgery or had other complications? (2) What femoral head-neck alignment and position parameters relative to the greater trochanter are achieved after surgery? (3) Can we identify radiographic signs of osteoarthritis at a minimum of 4 years after surgery? METHODS: Between January 2006 and December 2018, we treated 61 patients for SCFE. During this time, we generally used the modified Dunn procedure when the slip angle was ≥ 30°. Based on this indication, the modified Dunn procedure was performed in 37 patients (41 hips) during that time period, and those patients were potentially eligible for this retrospective study. Because bilateral hips in the same patient are not statistically independent, for our analyses, we analyzed only the hip with the longer follow-up time. Of those who remained, 11% (4) were lost before the minimum study follow-up of 48 months or had incomplete datasets, leaving 89% (33) for analysis here at a median follow-up of 80 months (range 49 to 208 months). Periacetabular osteotomy or subtrochanteric rotational femoral osteotomy was added under the same anaesthesia time in 33% (11 patients). We added periacetabular osteotomy in 24% (8) when intraoperative anterior instability was present in external rotation. A femoral rotational osteotomy was added in 9% (3) when posterior instability was present in flexion and internal rotation. The mean ± standard deviation age at the time of surgery was 13 ± 1 years, and 33% (11 of 33) of patients were female. The mean slip angle was 51° ± 16º, and 15% (5) of hips had unstable slips, defined as an inability to walk with or without crutches. We documented chronic presentations in 82% (27) of patients, acute and chronic in 12% (4), and acute in 6% (2). The rate of symptomatic AVN was determined by reviewing all radiographs obtained at the latest follow-up interval. Further surgery and other complications were assessed through an electronic medical record review. Radiographic morphologic parameters were measured before surgery and at a minimum follow-up of 4 years by two senior orthopaedic surgeons. Radiographs obtained at the latest follow-up visit were also screened for signs of osteoarthritis by the same surgeons. RESULTS: At the latest follow-up, 3% (1 patient) of patients developed symptomatic AVN and underwent further surgery and 3% (1) underwent revision surgery for screw breakage after a high-energy fall. Postoperatively, the alpha angle was restored to 39º ± 6º, the anterior head-neck offset was restored to 8 ± 3 mm, the neck-shaft angle was 136º ± 6º, and the presence of a positive Klein line decreased from 64% (21 hips) to 0% (0 hips). No patients showed radiographic signs of osteoarthritis at the minimum follow-up of 4 years. CONCLUSION: In this series, the modified Dunn procedure in moderate and severe slips was a reproducible procedure, and few patients developed symptomatic AVN or experienced other complications. Hip morphology was restored, but a longer follow-up duration and a detailed analysis of the results from other centers is warranted to assess the possible long-term risk of progression to AVN or osteoarthritis. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level IV, therapeutic study.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate (a) the potential of the Bruton's tyrosine kinase (BTK) inhibitors acalabrutinib and fenebrutinib to reduce multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) in acute (short-term and long-term follow-up) hemorrhagic shock (HS) rat models and (b) whether treatment with either acalabrutinib or fenebrutinib attenuates BTK, NF-κB and NLRP3 activation in HS. BACKGROUND: The MODS caused by an excessive systemic inflammatory response following trauma is associated with a high morbidity and mortality. The protein BTK is known to play a role in the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome, which is a key component of the innate inflammatory response. However, its role in trauma-hemorrhage is unknown. METHODS: Acute HS rat models were performed to determine the influence of acalabrutinib or fenebrutinib on MODS. The activation of BTK, NF-κB and NLRP3 pathways were analyzed by western blot in the kidney. RESULTS: We demonstrated that (a) HS caused organ injury and/or dysfunction and hypotension (post-resuscitation) in rats, while (b) treatment of HS-rats with either acalabrutinib or fenebrutinib attenuated the organ injury and dysfunction in acute HS models and (c) reduced the activation of BTK, NF- kB and NLRP3 pathways in the kidney. CONCLUSION: Our results point to a role of BTK in the pathophysiology of organ injury and dysfunction caused by trauma/hemorrhage and indicate that BTK inhibitors may be repurposed as a potential therapeutic approach for MODS after trauma and/or hemorrhage.

RESUMO

Biopolymers such as chitosan (CHT) or alginate (ALG) are among the most prominent for health-related applications due to their broad bioactivity. Their combination for the preparation of membranes is hereby proposed as an application for wound healing with the incorporation of lavender essential oil (LEO), widely known for its antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. The preparation of CHT, CHT + LEO, ALG, ALG + LEO, and CHT/ALG + LEO membranes was accomplished, and its composition was analyzed using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The water absorption capacity and oil release profile of the membranes revealed higher water uptake capacity when a lower LEO release was obtained. The combined CHT/ALG + LEO film showed a water uptake percentage of 638% after 48 h and a maximum LEO release concentration of 42 mg/L. Cytotoxicity and biocompatibility of the prepared membranes were studied using a HaCaT cell line, with an assessment of cell viability regarding film leachables, DNA quantification, and DAPI-phalloidin staining. The results revealed that the indirect contact of the prepared membranes via its leachables does not compromise cell viability, and upon direct contact, cells do not adhere or proliferate on the surface of the membranes. Moreover, the CHT/ALG + LEO membrane increases cell proliferation, making it suitable for applications in wound healing.

RESUMO

SUMOylation is described as a posttranslational protein modification (PTM) that is involved in the pathophysiological processes underlying several conditions related to ischemia- and reperfusion-induced damage. Increasing evidence suggests that, under low oxygen levels, SUMOylation might be part of an endogenous mechanism, which is triggered by injury to protect cells within the central nervous system. However, the role of ischemia-induced SUMOylation in the periphery is still unclear. This article summarizes the results of recent studies regarding SUMOylation profiles in several diseases characterized by impaired blood flow to the cardiorenal, gastrointestinal, and respiratory systems. Our review shows that although ischemic injury per se does not always increase SUMOylation levels, as seen in strokes, it seems that in most cases the positive modulation of protein SUMOylation after peripheral ischemia might be a protective mechanism. This complex relationship warrants further investigation, as the role of SUMOylation during hypoxic conditions differs from organ to organ and is still not fully elucidated.

RESUMO

Detecting and recognizing different kinds of urban objects is an important problem, in particular, in autonomous driving. In this context, we studied the potential of Mueller matrix polarimetry for classifying a set of relevant real-world objects: vehicles, pedestrians, traffic signs, pavements, vegetation and tree trunks. We created a database with their experimental Mueller matrices measured at 1550 nm and trained two machine learning classifiers, support vector machine and artificial neural network, to classify new samples. The overall accuracy of over 95% achieved with this approach, with either models, reveals the potential of polarimetry, specially combined with other remote sensing techniques, to enhance object recognition.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Using an extended retinacular flap containing the blood supply for the femoral head, proximal femur osteotomies can be performed at the neck level increasing the potential of correction of complex morphologies. The aim of this study was to analyze the safety, clinical, and radiographic results of this intra-articular surgical technique performed in skeletally mature patients with a minimum follow-up of three years. METHODS: Fourteen symptomatic adult patients (16 hips) with a mean age of 26 years underwent FNO using surgical hip dislocation and an extended soft tissue flap. Radiographs and radial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were obtained before and after surgery to evaluate articular congruency, cartilage damage, and morphologic parameters. Clinical functional evaluation was done using the Nonarthritic Hip Score (NAHS), the Hip Outcome Score (HOS), and the modified Harris Hip Score (mHHS). RESULTS: After surgery, no avascular necrosis was observed, and all the osteotomies healed without complication. The initial neck/shaft angle (range 120 to 150°) improved in all cases to a mean value of 130° ± 4.6 (p < 0.001). In eight of nine valgus hips, the high-positioned fovea capitis changed to a normal position after surgery. The NAHS score improved from a mean of 36.5 ± 14.9 to 82.9 ± 13.9 points after surgery (p < 0.001). After surgery, the mean HOS was 87.1 ± 17.6 points, and the mean mHHS was 78.6 ± 17 points. CONCLUSIONS: In this series, femoral neck osteotomy in the adult, although technically more demanding compared with other classic osteotomies, can be considered a safe procedure with considerable potential to correct hip deformities.

RESUMO

What if a new technology based on therapeutic deep eutectic systems would disrupt the current treatment of major economic and socially burden diseases? The classical definition of eutectic systems is that they are the combination of two or more compounds that interact via hydrogen bonds, from which results a melting temperature depression in comparison with that of its individual components. Therapeutic deep eutectic systems are defined as eutectic systems in which at least one of the individual components is an active pharmaceutical ingredient, or a eutectic system in which the active pharmaceutical ingredient is dissolved. Current literature reports on tuberculosis have been mostly based on the most common anti-tuberculosis drugs prescribed. Using eutectic systems based on naturally occurring molecules known for their anti-microbial activity may also present a promising therapeutic strategy able to cope with the prevalence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and prevent the appearance of multidrug resistance strains. With regards to colorectal cancer, literature has been unravelling combinations of terpenes with anti-inflammatory drugs that are selectively cytotoxic towards colorectal cancer cells and do not compromise the viability of normal intestinal cells. This technology could contribute to preventing tumor growth and metastasis while providing a patient compliance therapeutics, which will be crucial to the success of overcoming the challenges presented by cancers.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine if there were significant differences between patients submitted to hip arthroscopy (HA) and surgical hip dislocation (SHD) to treat femoro-acetabular impingement (FAI), which variables were significantly associated with hip function before surgery and those predictive of the applied functional outcome scale and its variation rate after surgery. METHODS: We selected 198 patients treated with HA or SHD with a mean follow-up of 59 months. Inclusion criteria were ages 18-50 years, isolated FAI cam morphology and complete clinical and radiologic documentation. The subjective outcome measure used was the nonarthritic hip score (NAHS). We compared pre-operative and post-operative NAHS, alpha angles and complication rates. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed to find which variables could influence NAHS values. RESULTS: The mean alpha-angle value improved from 71.5° to 40.8°, and mean NAHS improved from 50 to 83 points, with no difference between groups (HA/SHD). We found only a 16.9% influence rate on the pre-operative score, explained by variables of gender/pre-operative alpha angle and presence of degenerative changes/age. The influence rate on the NAHS variation ratio after surgery was 62.8%, explained by the variables of pre-operative score, type of surgery and type of surgery/alpha angle. The complication rate was 7%. CONCLUSIONS: FAI surgery can be considered effective in improving patient symptoms. There were no differences in clinical or radiographic results between techniques. We could more accurately predict the variation ratio of NAHS after surgery than its pre-operative value.

RESUMO

In this work, we explore the interactions between the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolim acetate and different inorganic salts belonging to two different cation families, those based on ammonium and others based on sodium. NMR and Raman spectroscopy are used to screen for changes in the molecular environment of the ions in the ionic liquid + inorganic salt mixtures as compared to pure ionic liquid. The ion self-diffusion coefficients are determined from NMR data, allowing the discussion of the ionicity values of the ionic liquid + inorganic salt mixtures calculated using different methods. Our data reveal that preferential interactions are established between the ionic liquid and ammonium-based salts, as opposed to sodium-based salts. Computational calculations show the formation of aggregates between the ionic liquid and the inorganic salt, which is consistent with the spectroscopic data, and indicate that the acetate anion of the ionic liquid establishes preferential interactions with the ammonium cation of the inorganic salts, leaving the imidazolium cation less engaged in the media.

RESUMO

Malaria is one of the most important tropical diseases; the use of amodiaquine as a current chemotherapy in the treatment of malaria has shown some problems such as hepatotoxicity and agranulocytosis. In this work we present the rational design, synthesis, and biological evaluation (antimalarial activity, cytotoxicity and genotoxicity) of four new fluoroamodiaquine analogues. The results showed significant correlation between MolDock score and IC50 values. The molecules 7b and c were the most active of the planned compounds, with lower IC50 against Plasmodium falciparum W2 strain (0.9 and 0.8 µM, respectively) and an excellent cytotoxicity profile. The present study revealed no mutagenicity or genotoxicity for the analogues. Confirming our docking results, the molecular dynamics showed that compound 7b remains stably bound to the heme group by means of π-stacking interactions between quinoline and the porphyrin ring. Based on these findings, this study may prove to be an efficient approach for the rational design of hemozoin inhibiting compounds to treat malaria.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The alpha angle is used to quantify in a single plane the head-neck junction deformity of cam femoro-acetabular impingement (FAI). When the deformity overlaps the superior retinaculum, femoral head osteoplasty in this area can jeopardise intra-articular vascular structures. This study proposes a new angular measure of the linear radial extension of cam deformity as a planning tool for bone resection and compares the accuracy of femoral head osteoplasty using open and arthroscopic surgery. METHODS: Twenty-five symptomatic patients operated on for FAI were included in this study. Radial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was done before and after surgery. Bi-dimensional coordinates of the vascular foramina and radial extension of the deformity (omega angle) were measured. This extension was correlated with the vascular foramina location and alpha-angle value. Accuracy of resection and hip function were evaluated before and after surgery. RESULTS: The cam lesion frequently extended posteriorly. No relation between values of alpha and omega angles was found. Cam resection was complete in 88 % of cases; there was a significant improvement in outcome score after surgery. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that alpha angle, measured in one plane, was not a predictor of the radial extension of cam deformity. To achieve a full resection, it was frequently necessary to extend the femoral head osteoplasty over the retinacular area. Pre-operative determination of the omega angle and location of the vascular foramina helped improve cam resection safety and accuracy.

RESUMO

The fabrication of an all-diamond microprobe is demonstrated for the first time. This ME (microelectrode) assembly consists of an inner boron doped diamond (BDD) layer and an outer undoped diamond layer. Both layers were grown on a sharp tungsten tip by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) in a stepwise manner within a single deposition run. BDD is a material with proven potential as an electrochemical sensor. Undoped CVD diamond is an insulating material with superior chemical stability in comparison to conventional insulators. Focused ion beam (FIB) cutting of the apex of the ME was used to expose an electroactive BDD disk. By cyclic voltammetry, the redox reaction of ferrocenemethanol was shown to take place at the BDD microdisk surface. In order to ensure that the outer layer was nonelectrically conductive, a diffusion barrier for boron atoms was established seeking the formation of boron-hydrogen complexes at the interface between the doped and the undoped diamond layers. The applicability of the microelectrodes in localized corrosion was demonstrated by scanning amperometric measurements of oxygen distribution above an Al-Cu-CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) galvanic corrosion cell.

RESUMO

We report on the fabrication and electro-optical characterization of SiGeSn multi-quantum well PIN diodes. Two types of PIN diodes, in which two and four quantum wells with well and barrier thicknesses of 10 nm each are sandwiched between B- and Sb-doped Ge-regions, were fabricated as single-mesa devices, using a low-temperature fabrication process. We discuss measurements of the diode characteristics, optical responsivity and room-temperature electroluminescence and compare with theoretical predictions from band structure calculations.

RESUMO

Hemorrhagic shock (HS), a leading cause of preventable death, is characterized by severe blood loss and inadequate tissue perfusion. Reoxygenation of ischemic tissues exacerbates organ damage through ischemia-reperfusion injury. SUMOylation has been shown to protect neurons after stroke and is upregulated in response to cellular stress. However, the role of SUMOylation in organ protection after HS is unknown. This study aimed to investigate SUMOylation-mediated organ protection following HS. Male Wistar rats were subjected to HS (blood pressure of 40 ± 2 mmHg, for 90 min) followed by reperfusion. Blood, kidney, and liver samples were collected at various time points after reperfusion to assess organ damage and investigate the profile of SUMO1 and SUMO2/3 conjugation. In addition, human kidney cells (HK-2), treated with the SUMOylation inhibitor TAK-981 or overexpressing SUMO proteins, were subjected to oxygen and glucose deprivation to investigate the role of SUMOylation in hypoxia/reoxygenation injury. The animals presented progressive multiorgan dysfunction, except for the renal system, which showed improvement over time. Compared to the liver, the kidneys displayed distinct patterns in terms of oxidative stress, apoptosis activation, and tissue damage. The global level of SUMO2/3 in renal tissue was also distinct, suggesting a differential role. Pharmacological inhibition of SUMOylation reduced cell viability after hypoxia-reoxygenation damage, while overexpression of SUMO1 or SUMO2 protected the cells. These findings suggest that SUMOylation might play a critical role in cellular protection during ischemia-reperfusion injury in the kidneys, a role not observed in the liver. This difference potentially explains the renal resilience observed in HS animals when compared to other systems.

RESUMO

Viticulture allows the preservation of native species inside vineyards in the Pampa biome. However, phytosanitary treatments in these areas can increase the levels of Cu, Zn and Mn. The study aimed to (i) verify the influence of Cu, Zn and Mn contents in Pampa biome soils; (ii) identify variables related to Cu, Zn and Mn that most contribute to the variation in richness, diversity, and dry matter production of native vegetation, (iii) investigate the phytoremediation potential of species present in vineyards. Botanical composition, Cu, Zn, Mn available in the soil, and plant nutritional composition in two vineyards (V1 and V2) and native field (NF) were evaluated. Vineyards showed higher Cu, Zn and Mn contents in the soil, resulting in the lowest biomass, richness, and diversity of native species. Mn in tissue was the most important variable in explaining the variation in dry matter. Zn in the soil helped to explain the difference in species richness and diversity. P concentration in tissue was important in elucidating the variation in species diversity. Paspalum plicatulum and Paspalum notatum have potential for phytostabilization of metals in vineyards.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Hemorrhagic shock (HS), which causes insufficient tissue perfusion, can result in multiple organ failure (MOF) and death. This study aimed to evaluate whether doxycycline (DOX) protects cardiovascular, kidney, and liver tissue from damage in a rat model of HS. Immediately before the resuscitation, DOX (10 mg/kg; i.v.) was administered, and its protective effects were assessed 24 h later. Mean arterial pressure, renal blood flow, heart rate, vasoactive drug response, and blood markers such as urea, creatinine, AST, ALT, CPK, CPR, and NOx levels were determined. RESULTS: We showed that DOX has a significant effect on renal blood flow and on urea, creatinine, AST, ALT, CPK, and NOx. Morphologically, DOX reduced the inflammatory process in the liver tissue. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that DOX protects the liver and kidney against injury and dysfunction in a HS model and could be a strategy to reduce organ damage associated with ischemia-and-reperfusion injury.

RESUMO

Although studies have suggested an association between lung infections and increased risk of neuronal disorders (e.g., dementia, cognitive impairment, and depressive and anxious behaviors), its mechanisms remain unclear. Thus, an experimental mice model of pulmonary sepsis was developed to investigate the relationship between lung and brain inflammation. Male Swiss mice were randomly assigned to either pneumosepsis or control groups. Pneumosepsis was induced by intratracheal instillation of Klebsiella pneumoniae, while the control group received a buffer solution. The model's validation included assessing systemic markers, as well as tissue vascular permeability. Depression- and anxiety-like behaviors and cognitive function were assessed for 30 days in sepsis survivor mice, inflammatory profiles, including cytokine levels (lungs, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex) and microglial activation (hippocampus), were examined. Pulmonary sepsis damaged distal organs, caused peripheral inflammation, and increased vascular permeability in the lung and brain, impairing the blood-brain barrier and resulting in bacterial dissemination. After sepsis induction, we observed an increase in myeloperoxidase activity in the lungs (up to seven days) and prefrontal cortex (up to 24 h), proinflammatory cytokines in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex, and percentage of areas with cells positive for ionized calcium-binding adaptor molecule 1 (IBA-1) in the hippocampus. Also, depression- and anxiety-like behaviors and changes in short-term memory were observed even 30 days after sepsis induction, suggesting a crosstalk between inflammatory responses of lungs and brain.

RESUMO

Caesalpinioideae is the second largest subfamily of legumes (Leguminosae) with ca. 4680 species and 163 genera. It is an ecologically and economically important group formed of mostly woody perennials that range from large canopy emergent trees to functionally herbaceous geoxyles, lianas and shrubs, and which has a global distribution, occurring on every continent except Antarctica. Following the recent re-circumscription of 15 Caesalpinioideae genera as presented in Advances in Legume Systematics 14, Part 1, and using as a basis a phylogenomic analysis of 997 nuclear gene sequences for 420 species and all but five of the genera currently recognised in the subfamily, we present a new higher-level classification for the subfamily. The new classification of Caesalpinioideae comprises eleven tribes, all of which are either new, reinstated or re-circumscribed at this rank: Caesalpinieae Rchb. (27 genera / ca. 223 species), Campsiandreae LPWG (2 / 5-22), Cassieae Bronn (7 / 695), Ceratonieae Rchb. (4 / 6), Dimorphandreae Benth. (4 / 35), Erythrophleeae LPWG (2 /13), Gleditsieae Nakai (3 / 20), Mimoseae Bronn (100 / ca. 3510), Pterogyneae LPWG (1 / 1), Schizolobieae Nakai (8 / 42-43), Sclerolobieae Benth. & Hook. f. (5 / ca. 113). Although many of these lineages have been recognised and named in the past, either as tribes or informal generic groups, their circumscriptions have varied widely and changed over the past decades, such that all the tribes described here differ in generic membership from those previously recognised. Importantly, the approximately 3500 species and 100 genera of the former subfamily Mimosoideae are now placed in the reinstated, but newly circumscribed, tribe Mimoseae. Because of the large size and ecological importance of the tribe, we also provide a clade-based classification system for Mimoseae that includes 17 named lower-level clades. Fourteen of the 100 Mimoseae genera remain unplaced in these lower-level clades: eight are resolved in two grades and six are phylogenetically isolated monogeneric lineages. In addition to the new classification, we provide a key to genera, morphological descriptions and notes for all 163 genera, all tribes, and all named clades. The diversity of growth forms, foliage, flowers and fruits are illustrated for all genera, and for each genus we also provide a distribution map, based on quality-controlled herbarium specimen localities. A glossary for specialised terms used in legume morphology is provided. This new phylogenetically based classification of Caesalpinioideae provides a solid system for communication and a framework for downstream analyses of biogeography, trait evolution and diversification, as well as for taxonomic revision of still understudied genera.

RESUMO

The subject of ionicity has been extensively discussed in the last decade, due to the importance of understanding the thermodynamic and thermophysical behaviour of ionic liquids. In our previous work, we established that ionic liquids' ionicity could be improved by the dissolution of simple inorganic salts in their milieu. In this work, a comparison between the thermophysical properties of two binary systems of ionic liquid + inorganic salt is presented. The effect of the ammonium thiocyanate salt on the ionicity of two similar ionic liquids, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethylsulfonate and ethylsulfate, is investigated in terms of the related thermophysical properties, such as density, viscosity and ionic conductivity in the temperature range 298.15-323.15 K. In addition, spectroscopic (NMR and Raman) and molecular dynamic studies were conducted in order to better understand the interactions that occur at a molecular level. The obtained results reveal that although the two anions of the ionic liquid exhibit similar chemical structures, the presence of one additional oxygen in the ethylsulfate anion has a major impact on the thermophysical properties of the studied systems.

RESUMO

Commercial femoral head prostheses (cobalt-chromium alloy, yttria partially stabilized zirconia (Y-PSZ) and alumina) and new silicon nitride ceramic ones (nanocrystalline diamond coated and uncoated) were compared in terms of artifact level production by computed tomography (CT). Pelvis examination by CT allows the correct diagnosis of some pathologies (e.g. prostate and colon cancer) and the evaluation of the prosthesis-bone interface in post-operative joint surgery. Artifact quantification is rarely seen in literature despite having a great potential to grade biomaterials according to their imaging properties. Materials' characteristics (density and effective atomic number), size and geometry of the prostheses can cause more or less artifact. A quantification procedure based on the calculation of four statistical parameters for the Hounsfield pixel values (mean, standard deviation, mean squared error and worst case error) is presented. CT sequential and helical scanning modes were performed. Results prove the artifact reproducibility and indicate that the cobalt-chromium and Y-PSZ are the most artifact-inducing materials, while alumina and silicon nitride (diamond coated and uncoated) ceramic ones present a low level of artifact. Considering the excellent biocompatibility and biotribological behaviour reported in earlier works, combined with the high medical imaging quality here assessed, diamond coated silicon nitride ceramics are arising as new materials for joint replacement.
