Finding novel methodologies that enhance the precision, agility, and standardization of drug discovery is crucial for studying leishmaniasis. The slide count is the technique most used to assess the leishmanicidal effect of a given drug in vitro. Despite being consolidated in the scientific environment, it presents several difficulties in its execution, assessment, and results. In addition to being laborious, this technique takes time, both for the preparation of the material for analysis and for the counting itself. Our research group suggests a fresh approach to address this requirement, which involves utilizing nuclear labeling with propidium iodide and flow cytometry to determine the quantity of Leishmania sp. parasites present in macrophages in vitro. Our results show that the fluorescence of infected samples increases as the infection rate increases. Using Pearson's Correlation analysis, it was possible to establish a correlation coefficient (Pearson r = 0.9473) that was strongly positive, linear, and directly proportional to the fluorescence and infection rate variables. Thus, it is possible to infer a mathematical equation through linear regression to estimate the number of parasites in each sample using the Relative Fluorescence Units (RFU) values. This new methodology opens space for the possibility of using this methodological resource in the in vitro quantification of Leishmania in macrophages.

The involvement of innate immune mediators to the Zika virus (ZIKV)-induced neuroinflammation is not yet well known. Here, we investigated whether neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), which are scaffolds of DNA associated with proteins, have the potential to injure peripheral nervous. The tissue lesions were evaluated after adding NETs to dorsal root ganglia (DRG) explants and to DRG constituent cells or injecting them into mouse sciatic nerves. Identification of NET harmful components was achieved by pharmacological inhibition of NET constituents. We found that ZIKV inoculation into sciatic nerves recruited neutrophils and elicited the production of the cytokines CXCL1 and IL-1ß, classical NET inducers, but did not trigger NET formation. ZIKV blocked PMA- and CXCL8-induced NET release, but, in contrast, the ZIKV nonstructural protein (NS)-1 induced NET formation. NET-enriched supernatants were toxic to DRG explants, decreasing neurite area, length, and arborization. NETs were toxic to DRG constituent cells and affected myelinating cells. Myeloperoxidase (MPO) and histones were identified as the harmful component of NETs. NS1 injection into mouse sciatic nerves recruited neutrophils and triggered NET release and caspase-3 activation, events that were also elicited by the injection of purified MPO. In summary, we found that ZIKV NS1 protein induces NET formation, which causes nervous tissue damages. Our findings reveal new mechanisms leading to neuroinflammation by ZIKV.

AIM: This Bayesian network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials assessed the effect of adjuvant periodontal treatment in both periodontal and HbA1c outcomes in adult individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic search was done up to February 2023 comparing sub-gingival debridement (SD) in combination with local or systemic adjuvant treatment with SD alone for individuals with T2DM. The primary outcomes were changes in absolute HbA1c levels and full-mouth probing depth reported at 3- to 6-month post-treatment. RESULTS: Seventy-two eligible publications evaluating 27 adjuvant treatments were retrieved. The combination of SD and systemic antibiotic metronidazole or SD and antioxidant alpha lipoic acid provided, respectively, 1.4% (95% credible interval [CrI] 0.48; 2.20) and 2.4% (95% CrI 1.50; 3.30) more significant improvement on HbA1c levels, and 0.89 mm (95% CrI 0.23; 1.50) and 0.92 mm (95% CrI 0.02; 0.92) greater periodontal probing depth reductions. Other adjuvant treatments provided added benefit to the periodontal outcomes without discernible effects on HbA1c. CONCLUSIONS: Adjuvant use of metronidazole or alpha lipoic acid was the best adjunct option to provide clinically meaningful HbA1c levels and probing depth reductions. However, no strong recommendation can be drawn due to the scarcity of studies for each adjuvant treatment and the low certainty of the resultant evidence.

AIMS: This study aimed to test whether the alcohol harm paradox (AHP) is observed in Brazil by investigating (i) the association between educational attainment and alcohol-related consequences (ARC) and (ii) the contribution of average alcohol volume consumed (AVC), past-month heavy episodic drinking (HED), smoking, body mass index (BMI), and depression in accounting for the disparities in ARC. METHODS: We analysed data from the 2019 Brazilian National Health Survey, a nationally representative household survey. The composite ARC outcome was considered present when an individual reported a past-year episode of activity failure, amnesia, and concern by others due to alcohol consumption. Adjusted binary logistic regression models were fitted using a hierarchical approach to calculate the odds ratios (OR) and respective 95% confidence intervals (CI), and to assess the contribution of each set of variables in attenuating the educational differences in ARC. RESULTS: Those from the lowest educational strata (incomplete elementary school) exhibited higher odds of ARC than their counterparts (OR: 2.03; 95% CI: 1.73-2.37). Although smoking, BMI, and depression attenuated the educational gradient (i.e. reduced the difference between reference and riskier categories) in ARC by ~13%, the adjustment for AVC and HED amplified inequalities by 0.3% and 5.7%, respectively. CONCLUSION: We found evidence of the AHP in Brazil. Educational inequalities in ARC were scarcely attenuated by behavioural factors, and a suppression effect was noted when adjusting for AVC and HED.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether different alcohol intake dimensions: average alcohol volume consumed (AVC), binge drinking (BD), and alcohol-related consequences (ARC) are associated with self-rated oral health (SROH). METHODS: Secondary cross-sectional analysis of The Brazilian National Health Survey of 2019 data. BD was considered when an individual reported a past-month heavy drinking episode. ARC referred to experiences such as past-year blackouts, concerns from others, or failure in routine activities. Adjusted multivariate Poisson regression models with robust variance were employed to calculate the prevalence ratios (PR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of SROH across the entire sample and stratified by sex and age. RESULTS: The sample comprised 88,531 participants aged 18 years or older. Individuals experiencing at least one past-year ARC had an 11% (95% CI: 1.07, 1.15) higher prevalence of poor SROH than their abstainers' counterparts. Associations were more pronounced among men aged less than 50 (PR = 1.09; 95% CI: 1.03, 1.15) and women aged 50 years or more (PR = 1.15; 95% CI: 1.01, 1.30). CONCLUSION: Alcohol-related consequences predicted poor SROH. Oral health inquiries should include the screening for ARC in addition to traditional measurements of AVC or BD, since such exposures may not fully capture the role of alcohol on oral health impairment.

OBJECTIVES: To assess color change efficacy and the adverse effects of varied over-the-counter (OTC) bleaching protocols. METHODOLOGY: The study included randomized clinical trials evaluating color changes from OTC bleaching agents. Nine databases were searched, including the partial capture of the grey literature. The RoB2 tool analyzed the individual risk of bias in the studies. Frequentist network meta-analyses compared treatments through common comparators (∆Eab* and ∆SGU color changes, and tooth sensitivity), integrating direct and indirect estimates and using the mean and risk differences as effect measures with respective 95% confidence intervals. The GRADE approach assessed the certainty of the evidence. RESULTS: Overall, 37 remaining studies constituted the qualitative analysis, and ten composed the meta-analyses. The total sample included 1,932 individuals. ∆Eab* was significantly higher in groups 6% hydrogen peroxide (HP) strips (≥ 14 h). ∆SGU was significantly higher in groups at-home 10% carbamide peroxide (CP) (≥ 14 h), followed by 6% HP strips (≥ 14 h) and 3% HP strips (≥ 14 h). At-home 10% CP (7-13 h) and placebo showed lower risks of tooth sensitivity without significant differences between these treatments. CONCLUSION: Considering the low level of evidence, OTC products presented satisfactory short-term effects on tooth bleaching compared to the placebo, with little to no impact on dentin hypersensitivity and gingival irritation. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: OTC products are proving to be practical alternatives for tooth whitening. However, patients should be advised about the possible risks of carrying out such procedures without professional supervision.

SARS-CoV-2 is the virus responsible for a respiratory disease called COVID-19 that devastated global public health. Since 2020, there has been an intense effort by the scientific community to develop safe and effective prophylactic and therapeutic agents against this disease. In this context, peptides have emerged as an alternative for inhibiting the causative agent. However, designing peptides that bind efficiently is still an open challenge. Here, we show an algorithm for peptide engineering. Our strategy consists of starting with a peptide whose structure is similar to the interaction region of the human ACE2 protein with the SPIKE protein, which is important for SARS-COV-2 infection. Our methodology is based on a genetic algorithm performing systematic steps of random mutation, protein-peptide docking (using the PyRosetta library) and selecting the best-optimized peptides based on the contacts made at the peptide-protein interface. We performed three case studies to evaluate the tool parameters and compared our results with proposals presented in the literature. Additionally, we performed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations (three systems, 200 ns each) to probe whether our suggested peptides could interact with the spike protein. Our results suggest that our methodology could be a good strategy for designing peptides.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate randomized controlled trials (RCTs), with at least 6 months of follow-up, on whether professional mechanical plaque removal (PMPR) including supragingival scaling should be performed prior and separately from subgingival scaling and root planning (SRP) in nonsurgical periodontal therapy (NSPT), in terms of clinical and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) (CRD42020219759). METHODS: The MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL, LILACS and Web of Science electronic databases, as well as grey literature sources, were searched by two independent reviewers up to May 2023. The Cochrane Collaboration's Risk of Bias tool (RoB 2.0) was used for quality appraisal and GRADE for assessing the certainty of evidence. Random-effects pairwise meta-analyses compared the changes in probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment loss (CAL), and bleeding on probing (BoP) of a stepwise NSPT approach (PMPR prior and separately from SRP) and conventional one-step NSPT through mean differences (MDs) and associated confidence intervals (95% CI). RESULTS: Two RCTs were included, including data of 77 participants with severe periodontitis. One RCT presents high risk of bias and the other has some concerns. No significant differences were found between the stepwise approach and performing both steps simultaneously for any clinical outcomes, with overall very low certainty on evidence. No adverse effects were detected and there was no data on PROs. CONCLUSIONS: There is very-low certainty evidence of no significant difference on PPD and BoP reductions and CAL gain between supragingival scaling performed prior and separately from SRP and conventional one-step NSPT.

The folding process of multidomain proteins is a highly intricate phenomenon involving the assembly of distinct domains into a functional three-dimensional structure. During this process, each domain may fold independently while interacting with others. The folding of multidomain proteins can be influenced by various factors, including their composition, the structure of each domain, or the presence of disordered regions, as well as the surrounding environment. Misfolding of multidomain proteins can lead to the formation of nonfunctional structures associated with a range of diseases, including cancers or neurodegenerative disorders. Understanding this process is an important step for many biophysical analyses such as stability, interaction, malfunctioning, and rational drug design. One such multidomain protein is growth factor receptor-bound protein 2 (GRB2), an adaptor protein that is essential in regulating cell survival. GRB2 consists of one central Src homology 2 (SH2) domain flanked by two Src homology 3 (SH3) domains. The SH2 domain interacts with phosphotyrosine regions in other proteins, while the SH3 domains recognize proline-rich regions on protein partners during cell signaling. Here, we combined computational and experimental techniques to investigate the folding process of GRB2. Through computational simulations, we sampled the conformational space and mapped the mechanisms involved by the free energy profiles, which may indicate possible intermediate states. From the molecular dynamics trajectories, we used the energy landscape visualization method (ELViM), which allowed us to visualize a three-dimensional (3D) representation of the overall energy surface. We identified two possible parallel folding routes that cannot be seen in a one-dimensional analysis, with one occurring more frequently during folding. Supporting these results, we used differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and fluorescence spectroscopy techniques to confirm these intermediate states in vitro. Finally, we analyzed the deletion of domains to compare our model outputs to previously published results, supporting the presence of interdomain modulation. Overall, our study highlights the significance of interdomain communication within the GRB2 protein and its impact on the formation, stability, and structural plasticity of the protein, which are crucial for its interaction with other proteins in key signaling pathways.

Background: Tumor boards (TB) are synonymous with quality of care but have been occasionally misunderstood and underutilized. This survey aimed to evaluate health professionals' perceptions of TBs in Brazil. Materials & methods: The survey was sent electronically. Results: Of 206 respondents, 67.8% attended TBs at least once and 82.4% dedicated at least 1 h weekly to them; 64.2% preferred a more &educational' model over case discussions only; 63.1% had institutional leadership capable of promoting multidisciplinarity; 21.1 and 32.7% of the physicians and nonphysicians, respectively, felt intimidated to express their opinions; 91.6% believed that TBs improve cancer outcomes. Postpandemic, 52.7% preferred a hybrid (virtual/face-to-face) model. Conclusion: This study provides a glimpse of the reality of TBs in Brazil, with potential implications for clinical practice.

Metabolomics analyses and improvement of growth conditions were applied toward diversification of phomactin terpenoids by the fungus Biatriospora sp. CBMAI 1333. Visualization of molecular networking results on Gephi assisted the observation of phomactin diversification and guided the isolation of new phomactin variants by applying a modified version of chemometrics based on a fractional factorial design. Consequentially, the first nitrogen-bearing phomactin, phomactinine (1), with a new rearranged carbon skeleton, was isolated and identified. The strategy combining metabolomics and chemometrics can be extended to include bioassay potency, structure novelty, and metabolic diversification connected or not to genomic analyses.

AIM: To evaluate associations between oral hygiene and gingival abrasion (GA) in a rural population from southern Brazil. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A population-based sample representative of individuals from a rural community in southern Brazil was included. Individuals aged 15 years or older and who had five teeth or more present were selected for this analysis. GA extent was defined as the total number of abrasions per individual. An adjusted multilevel negative binomial regression analysis was used to investigate the associations between site-, tooth- and individual-level variables and GA. Mean ratios (MR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated. RESULTS: Five hundred ninety-five dentate individuals aged 15-82 years were analysed. In the adjusted models, brushing more than twice a day (MR = 1.13; 95% CI 1.02-1.26) and brushing with a hard/medium-bristle toothbrush (MR = 1.11; 95% CI 1.01-1.23) were significantly associated with more generalized GA. CONCLUSIONS: The extent of GA was independently associated with greater brushing frequency and the use of a toothbrush with harder bristles in residents of a rural area.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the association between alcohol consumption and tooth loss is modified across socioeconomic positions (SEPs) in Brazilian older adults. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis using data of The Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSI-Brazil 2015-2016). Effect Measure Modification (EMM) analyses using multivariable Poisson regression models tested whether the association between heavy drinking and lack of functional dentition (FD) varies in magnitude and direction according to levels of Household Wealth index (HWI) and educational attainment, assessed by the Relative Excess Risk due to Interaction (RERI). Sensitivity analyses using lifetime exposure to alcohol were performed. RESULTS: The analytical sample comprised 8078 participants. Heavy drinkers living in low-wealth households and with lower education presented 7% (95% CI: 1.01-1.14) and 36% (95% CI: 1.28-1.44) higher prevalence of lack of FD, respectively, than their counterparts, and super-additive associations were detected [RERI for HWI: 0.12 (95% CI: 0.02-0.21); RERI for educational attainment: 0.20 (95% CI: 0.09-0.30)]. The associations were also super-additive in the sensitivity analyses when controlling for abstainer reference group bias. CONCLUSION: We suggest that alcohol consumption disproportionately impacts the prevalence of tooth loss in Brazilian older adults from lower SEP groups.

Neospora caninum is an apicomplexan protozoan that causes neosporosis, which has a high economic impact on cattle herds with no available vaccine. During infection, the secretion of dense granules and the expression of surface antigens play an important role in hosting immunomodulation. However, some epitopes of those antigens are immunogenic, and using these fractions could improve the subunit antigens in vaccine design. This study evaluates the recombinant peptides rsNcGRA1 and rsNcSAG4 derived from NcGRA1 and NcSAG4 native antigens as vaccine candidates produced by a fermentative process in the yeast culture system of Komagataella phaffii strain Km71, confirmed by colony PCR, SDS-PAGE, and western blotting. The assay was conducted in BALB/c mice using the peptides at low (25 µg) and standard (50 µg) dosages in monovalent and combined administrations at three time points with saponin as an adjuvant assessing the immunogenicity by antibodies response and cytokine production. We challenge the females after pregnancy confirmation using 2 × 105 NC-1 tachyzoites previously propagated in Vero cells. We assessed the chronic infection in dams and vertical transmission in the offspring by PCR and histopathology. Mice, especially those immunised with combined peptides and monovalent rsNcGRA1 at a standard dose, controlling the chronic infection in dams with the absence of clinical manifestations, showed an immune response with induction of IgG1, a proper balance between Th1/Th2 cytokines and reduced vertical transmission in the pups. In contrast, dams inoculated with a placebo vaccine showed clinical signs, low-scored brain lesions, augmented chronic infection with 80% positivity, 31% mortality in pups, and 81% vertical transmission. These findings indicate that rsNcGRA1 peptides in monovalent and combined with rsNCSAG4 at standard dose are potential vaccine candidates and improve the protective immune response against neosporosis in mice.

Arsenic is an environmental toxicant known to be a carcinogen and endocrine disruptor. Maternal exposure to arsenic has been associated with fetus malformation and reproductive disorders in male offspring. However, it is unclear the extent to which those effects remain during postnatal development and adulthood. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the long-term effects of prenatal arsenic exposure on reproductive parameters of male offspring at peripubertal and adult periods. Pregnant female Wistar rats were exposed to 0 or 10 mg/L sodium arsenite in drinking water from gestational day 1 (GD 1) until GD 21 and male pups were analyzed at postnatal day 44 (PND 44) and PND 70. We observed that some reproductive parameters were affected differently by arsenic exposure at each age evaluated. The body and reproductive organs weights, as well as testicular and epididymal morphology were strongly affected in peripubertal animals and recovered at adult period. On the other hand, the antioxidant genes expression (SOD1, SOD2, CAT and GSTK1) and the endogenous antioxidant system were affected in the testes and epididymides from both peripubertal and adult rats. Finally, an impairment in daily sperm production and in sperm parameters was observed in adult animals. Taken together, our findings show that prenatal arsenic exposure affected reproductive parameters of peripubertal and adult male rats mainly due to oxidative stress. Collectively, those alterations may be affecting fertility potential of adult animals.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the prevalence of gingivitis estimated by the 2018 European Federation of Periodontology/American Academy of Periodontology (EFP/AAP) classification with the other case definitions and assess the ability of this classification system in discriminating sociodemographic and clinical factors associated with the presence of gingivitis in a cohort study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A multistage random sample of 1134 12-year-old adolescents was submitted to a full-mouth examination according to the Community Periodontal Index. Socioeconomic and clinical variables were collected at baseline. Gingivitis was considered according to the following criteria: (a) ≥ 10% of bleeding sites (the 2018 EFP/AAP criteria); (b) ≥ 15% of bleeding sites; and (c) the mean full-mouth bleeding sites. Adjusted multilevel Poisson regression assessed the association between independent variables at baseline and each definition of gingivitis at 2-year follow-up. RESULTS: Seven hundred forty-two 14-year-old adolescents were re-revaluated at follow-up. The prevalence of gingivitis was 28.7% according to 10% of bleeding threshold. The 2018 EFP/AAP criteria and other definitions showed higher prevalence and mean of gingivitis for low-household income adolescents and for those with higher levels of dental plaque and untreated dental caries. Nonetheless, the highest strengths of association were observed for the threshold of ≥ 15% of bleeding sites. CONCLUSION: The 2018 EFP/AAP case definition of gingivitis showed a similar discriminant validity compared to the 15% threshold and the mean full-mouth bleeding sites. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The 2018 EFP/AAP classification allows the discrimination of important risk factors and should be used for the establishment of priorities for large-scale therapeutic programs.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate, through a network meta-analysis, the effectiveness of blood concentrates in reducing pain perception, trismus, and edema after mandibular third molar extraction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An electronic search was performed in nine databases to locate randomized clinical trials comparing blood concentrate use after mandibular third molar extraction. Two authors selected and extracted the data independently. The individual risk of bias in the studies was assessed with the RoB v2.0 tool. A network meta-analysis compared postoperative pain and trismus scores after applying different blood concentrates, using the mean difference (MD) as an effect estimate. The GRADE approach assessed the certainty of evidence. RESULTS: Thirty-one randomized clinical trials were included in the review and 18 in the meta-analysis. Leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) was the most used blood concentrate, followed by platelet-rich plasma (PRP). The network meta-analysis, depending on the analyzed period, evaluated up to 1240 surgeries. Among the analyzed blood concentrates, advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF) performed better among the analyzed blood concentrates, decreasing postoperative pain in 1, 2, 3, and 7 days and reducing trismus up to the inflammatory peak compared to blood clots. Only two studies had a low risk of bias. CONCLUSIONS: Based on very low certainty of evidence, using concentrates seemed efficient compared to blood clots in reducing pain and trismus after mandibular third molar surgeries. A-PRF decreased postoperative pain throughout the evaluated time and trismus during the acute inflammatory peak. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: A-PRF after mandibular third molar extractions performed better among the analyzed blood concentrates and seemed efficient in improving postoperative quality by decreasing inflammatory signs and symptoms.

Ticks have saliva rich in immunoregulatory molecules that interfere with the host's physiology in order to feed. This study aimed to evaluate the concentration of acute phase proteins and circulating oxidative stress in response to infestation by Amblyomma sculptum and Dermacentor nitens in two breed horses, Mangalarga Marchador and Breton Postier, to define resistance or susceptibility to ticks. Among the oxidative stress markers, we observed lower malondialdehyde and nitric oxide in horses with tick infestation, consequently not altering the antioxidant enzymes. Breton Postier with tick infestation showed a reduction in the ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP), which may be due to lower feeding of the host due to the stress caused by the infestation or even to sequestration of components induced by the tick during blood feeding. The alpha-1-antitrypsin, an acute phase protein, showed an increase in Mangalarga Marchador with tick infestation; curiously it is related to a protective action against tissue damage, pathogens and parasites. We could assume that Mangalarga Marchador showed a better response to ticks when compared to Breton Postier. However, it is still early to define the resistance or susceptibility to ticks, as we did not observe significant changes in most of the analyzed variables. Further studies are needed to understand the compounds and mechanisms of action of the tick saliva in the acute phase proteins and the possible relationships of oxidative stress in the host and the tick during blood feeding.

Food safety is recognized as a main requirement for consumers, food industries, and official laboratories. Here, we present the optimization and screening qualitative validation of two multianalyte methods in bovine muscle tissues by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry with an Orbitrap-type analyzer, operated with a heated ionization source in positive and negative mode. This aims for not only the simultaneous detection of veterinary drugs regulated in Brazil but also the prospection of antimicrobials not yet monitored. Two different sample preparation procedures were applied: method A-generic solid-liquid extraction with 0.1% formic acid (v/v) in an aqueous solution of EDTA 0.1% (w/v)-acetonitrile-methanol (1:1:1, v/v/v), followed by an additional ultrasound-assisted extraction and method B-QuEChERS. In both procedures, selectivity showed satisfactory conformity. From a detection capability (CCß) equivalent to ½ the maximum residue limit, >34% of the analyte resulted in a false positive rate of <5%, preponderant by the QuEChERS method, which exhibited a higher yield of the sample. The results showed the potential application of both procedures in the routine analysis of foods by official laboratories, enabling the expansion of this methodological portfolio as well as its analytical scopes, thus optimizing the control of residues of veterinary drugs in the country.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to investigate whether the association between binge drinking and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) differs by socioeconomic position (SEP) in Brazilian older adults. BACKGROUND: The adverse health effects of alcohol consumption disproportionately affect socioeconomically disadvantaged and older individuals. Moreover, measures of binge drinking may capture different domains of the association between alcohol misuse and health that might be independent of the traditional markers of volume or frequency of consumption. Evidence of the association between alcohol use and oral health outcomes has failed to consider binge drinking and possible effect modification by SEP. METHODS: We conducted a secondary cross-sectional analysis using the baseline data from The Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Ageing (2015-2016). Effect Measure Modification analyses using multivariable Poisson regression models tested whether the association between past-month binge drinking and higher scores of the Oral Impacts on Daily Performance (OIDP) questionnaire differed in magnitude by level of household wealth and educational attainment, assessed using Relative Excess Risk due to Interaction (RERI) and simple slope test. RESULTS: The analytical sample comprised 8857 individuals. Participants who were from low-wealth households or with lower education and reported past-month binge drinking had 27% (95% CI: 1.16 to 1.39) and 28% (95% CI: 1.18 to 1.40) higher OIDP scores, respectively, than those not binge drinkers from higher SEP, and super-additive associations were detected (RERI for household wealth: 0.12; RERI for educational attainment: 0.14). CONCLUSION: Binge drinkers from low SEP have poorer OHRQoL. Public oral health initiatives aiming to combat binge drinking are likely to disproportionately benefit vulnerable groups.
