Adequate assessment of human health risk of uranium contamination at hazardous waste sites, which is an important step in determining the cleanup strategy, is based on bioavailability data. Bioavailability of uranium from contaminated soil has not been properly determined yet. Bioaccessibility is an in vitro conservative estimate of bioavailability and is thus frequently used for site-specific risk assessment. Bioaccessibility of uranium was measured in 33 soil samples from the Port Hope area in Ontario, Canada, by the physiologically based extraction test (PBET). Higher bioaccessibility values in the gastric plus intestinal phase, 48.4% ± 16.8%, than in the gastric phase, 20.8% ± 11.7%, are very probably the result of more efficient extraction of uranium from soil by intestinal fluid rich in carbonate ions. The observed variability of measured bioaccessibility values is discussed in light of the results of scanning electron microscope examination of the soil samples. Uranium bioaccessibility values in both gastric (acidic) and gastric plus intestinal (neutral) phases are higher in soil samples with smaller uranium-bearing particles and lower in samples where the uranium-bearing particles are larger. We postulate that the most important reason for variability of measured bioaccessibility values in Port Hope soil samples may be the difference in particle size of uranium-bearing particles.

During the past several decades, etiological and geochemical studies tend to link the Kaschin-Beck Disease (KBD) to the deficiency of some specific trace elements (e.g., selenium and iodine) in the environment; however the link has been proven inconclusive. In this work, we have investigated the relationship between KBD and the environment in a broader scope by examining comprehensively the chemistry of the surface waters in northwestern Sichuan, China, in relation to the KBD prevalence. The surface waters in the study area were found to be near neutral to slightly alkaline (pH6.70 to 8.85 with a mean of 7.91) and mostly soft (total hardness 35.2 to 314.3mg/L, mean 118.8mg/L) with low salinity (total dissolved solids (TDS) 44.5mg/L to 376.6mg/L, mean 146.6mg/L). The waters were dominated by cations Ca2+ and Mg2+ and anion HCO3-; whereas the alkali metal ions K+ and Na+ and the anions Cl- and S042- were relatively scarce. Spatially, the hardness/salinity of the surface waters exhibited a characteristic of being lower towards the center of the study area where most severe KBD endemic has been observed. Even though it is not conclusive at this stage, a correlation between KBD prevalence and the salinity/hardness of the surface waters of an area has been demonstrated. As a postulate, the long-term consumption of such low salinity waters may lead to a deficiency of some essential elements such as Ca, Mg, Se and I in humans, which may be a factor in inducing KBD. However, other factors such as high altitude and cold climate, poor nutrition and sanitary conditions may play an important role in the disease endemic.

It is important to know the initial time, or zero-time, of a nuclear event such as a nuclear weapon's test, a nuclear power plant accident or a nuclear terrorist attack (e.g. with an improvised nuclear device, IND). Together with relevant meteorological information, the calculated zero-time is used to help locate the origin of a nuclear event. The zero-time of a nuclear event can be derived from measured activity ratios of two nuclides. The calculated zero-time of a nuclear event would not be complete without an appropriately evaluated uncertainty term. In this paper, analytical equations for zero-time and the associated uncertainty calculations are derived using a measured activity ratio of two nuclides. Application of the derived equations is illustrated in a realistic example using data from the last Chinese thermonuclear test in 1980.
