RESUMO

The discovery of the nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) and its link with the in vivo dissociation of certain Gd(III)-based contrast agents (CAs) applied in the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) induced a still growing research to replace the compromised agents with safer alternatives. In recent years, several ligands were designed to exploit the luminescence properties of the lanthanides, containing structurally constrained aromatic moieties, which may form rigid Gd(III) complexes. One of these ligands is (1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-diyl)bis(methyliminodiacetic acid) (H4FENTA) designed and synthesized to sensitize Eu(III) and Tb(III) luminescence. Our results show that the conditional stability of the [Gd(FENTA)]- chelate calculated for physiological pH (pGd = 19.7) is similar to those determined for [Gd(DTPA)]2- (pGd = 19.4) and [Gd(DOTA)]- (pGd = 20.1), routinely used in the clinical practice. The [Gd(FENTA)]- complex is remarkably inert with respect to its dissociation (t1/2 = 872 days at pH = 7 and 25 °C); furthermore, its relaxivity values determined at different field strengths and temperatures (e.g., r1p = 4.3 mM-1s-1at 60 MHz and 37 °C) are ca. one unit higher than those of [Gd(DTPA)]2- (r1p = 3.4 mM-1 s-1) and [Gd(DOTA)]- (r1p = 3.1 mM-1 s-1) under the same conditions. Moreover, significant improvement on the relaxivity was observed in the presence of serum proteins (r1p = 6.9 mM-1 s-1 at 60 MHz and 37 °C). The luminescence lifetimes recorded in H2O and D2O solutions indicate the presence of a water molecule (q = 1) in the inner sphere of the complex directly coordinated to the metal ion, possessing a relatively high water exchange rate (kex298 = 29(2) × 106 s-1). The acceleration of the water exchange can be explained by the steric compression around the water binding site due to the rigid structure of the complex, which was supported by DFT calculations. On the basis of these results, ligands containing a phenanthroline platform have great potential in the design of safer Gd(III) agents for MRI.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is characterized by the breakdown of self-tolerance, the production of high-affinity pathogenic autoantibodies and derailed B cell responses, which indicates the importance of central players, such as follicular T helper (TFH) subsets and follicular T regulatory (TFR) cells, in the pathomechanism of the disease. In this study, we aimed to analyze the distribution of the circulating counterparts of these cells and their association with disease characteristics and B cell disproportions in SLE. We found that the increased percentage of activated circulating TFH (cTFH) and cTFR cells was more pronounced in cutaneous lupus; however, among cTFH subsets, the frequency of cTFH17 cells was decreased in patients with lupus nephritis. Furthermore, the decreased proportion of cTFH17 cells was associated with low complement C4 levels and high disease activity scores. We also investigated whether the blocking of the IL-21 receptor (IL-21R) with an anti-IL-21R monoclonal antibody inhibits the B cell response, since IL-21 primarily produced by TFH cells potentially promotes humoral immunity. We observed that anti-IL-21R inhibited plasmablast generation and immunoglobulin production. Our study demonstrated that, besides cTFR/cTFH imbalance, cTFH17 cells play a crucial role in SLE pathogenesis, and modulating cTFH-B cell interaction through the IL-21/IL-21R pathway may be a promising therapeutic strategy to suppress the pathological B cell response.

Propolis is a natural bee product that is widely used in folk medicine. This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities of ethanolic extract of propolis (EEP) on methicillin-resistant and sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA and MSSA). Propolis samples were collected from six regions in Hungary. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) values and the interaction of EEP-antibiotics were evaluated by the broth microdilution and the chequerboard broth microdilution methods, respectively. The effect of EEP on biofilm formation and eradication was estimated by crystal violet assay. Resazurin/propidium iodide dyes were applied for simultaneous quantification of cellular metabolic activities and dead cells in mature biofilms. The EEP1 sample showed the highest phenolic and flavonoid contents. The EEP1 successfully prevented the growth of planktonic cells of S. aureus (MIC value = 50 µg/mL). Synergistic interactions were shown after the co-exposition to EEP1 and vancomycin at 108 CFU/mL. The EEP1 effectively inhibited the biofilm formation and caused significant degradation of mature biofilms (50-200 µg/mL), as a consequence of the considerable decrement of metabolic activity. The EEP acts effectively as an antimicrobial and antibiofilm agent on S. aureus. Moreover, the simultaneous application of EEP and vancomycin could enhance their effect against MRSA infection.

BACKGROUND: Proton computed tomography (pCT) and radiography (pRad) are proposed modalities for improved treatment plan accuracy and in situ treatment validation in proton therapy. The pCT system of the Bergen pCT collaboration is able to handle very high particle intensities by means of track reconstruction. However, incorrectly reconstructed and secondary tracks degrade the image quality. We have investigated whether a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based filter is able to improve the image quality. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The CNN was trained by simulation and reconstruction of tens of millions of proton and helium tracks. The CNN filter was then compared to simple energy loss threshold methods using the Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristics curve (AUROC), and by comparing the image quality and Water Equivalent Path Length (WEPL) error of proton and helium radiographs filtered with the same methods. RESULTS: The CNN method led to a considerable improvement of the AUROC, from 74.3% to 97.5% with protons and from 94.2% to 99.5% with helium. The CNN filtering reduced the WEPL error in the helium radiograph from 1.03 mm to 0.93 mm while no improvement was seen in the CNN filtered pRads. CONCLUSION: The CNN improved the filtering of proton and helium tracks. Only in the helium radiograph did this lead to improved image quality.

Propolis contains many effective antifungal compounds that have not yet been identified and evaluated. In addition, distinguishing samples of propolis with high antifungal activity from less active ones would be beneficial for effective therapy. Propolis samples were collected from four different geographical regions in Hungary and used to prepare ethanol extracts for analysis. First, an antifungal susceptibility test was performed on Candida albicans. Then, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and an opto-electronic nose were applied for the classification of propolis samples. In three propolis samples, the IC50 was measured between 72 and 134 µg/mL, but it was not calculable in the fourth sample. GC-MS analysis of the four propolis samples identified several compounds belonging to the various chemical classes. In the antifungal samples, the relative concentration of 11,14-eicosadienoic acid was the highest. Based on the opto-electronic electronic nose measurements, 98.4% of the original grouped antifungal/non-antifungal cases were classified correctly. We identified several molecules from propolis with potential antifungal properties. In addition, this is the first report to demonstrate the usefulness of a portable opto-electronic nose to identify propolis samples with high antifungal activity. These results may contribute to the rapid and efficient selection of new fungicide-candidate molecules and effective propolis samples for treatment.

Expected Shortfall (ES), the average loss above a high quantile, is the current financial regulatory market risk measure. Its estimation and optimization are highly unstable against sample fluctuations and become impossible above a critical ratio r=N/T, where N is the number of different assets in the portfolio, and T is the length of the available time series. The critical ratio depends on the confidence level α, which means we have a line of critical points on the α-r plane. The large fluctuations in the estimation of ES can be attenuated by the application of regularizers. In this paper, we calculate ES analytically under an ℓ1 regularizer by the method of replicas borrowed from the statistical physics of random systems. The ban on short selling, i.e., a constraint rendering all the portfolio weights non-negative, is a special case of an asymmetric ℓ1 regularizer. Results are presented for the out-of-sample and the in-sample estimator of the regularized ES, the estimation error, the distribution of the optimal portfolio weights, and the density of the assets eliminated from the portfolio by the regularizer. It is shown that the no-short constraint acts as a high volatility cutoff, in the sense that it sets the weights of the high volatility elements to zero with higher probability than those of the low volatility items. This cutoff renormalizes the aspect ratio r=N/T, thereby extending the range of the feasibility of optimization. We find that there is a nontrivial mapping between the regularized and unregularized problems, corresponding to a renormalization of the order parameters.

We have described earlier that in aqueous solutions, the reaction of 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane (PTA) with maleic acid yielded a phosphonium-alkanoate zwitterion. The same reaction with 2-methylmaleic acid (citraconic acid) proceeded much slower. It is reported here, that in the case of glutaconic and itaconic acids (constitutional isomers of citraconic acid), formation of the corresponding phosphabetaines requires significantly shorter reaction times. The new phosphabetaines were isolated and characterized by elemental analysis, multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and ESI-MS spectrometry. Furthermore, their molecular structures in the solid state were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD). Synthesis of the phosphabetaines from PTA and unsaturated dicarboxylic acids was also carried out mechanochemically with the use of a planetary ball mill, and the characteristics of the syntheses in solvent and under solvent-free conditions were compared. In aqueous solutions, the reaction of the new phosphabetaines with Ag(CF3SO3) yielded Ag(I)-based coordination polymers. According to the SC-XRD results, in these polymers the Ag(I)-ion coordinates to the N and O donor atoms of the ligands; however, Ag(I)-Ag(I) interactions were also identified. The Ag(I)-based coordination polymer (CP1.2) formed with the glutaconyl derivative of PTA (1) showed considerable antimicrobial activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria and yeast strains.

We investigated the antifungal activities of purified plant metabolites artemisinin (Ar) and scopoletin (Sc) including inhibition, effects on metabolic activities, viability, and oxidative stress on planktonic forms and on preformed biofilms of seven Candida species. The characteristic minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC90) of Ar and Sc against Candida species ranged from 21.83-142.1 µg/mL and 67.22-119.4 µg/mL, respectively. Drug concentrations causing ≈10% CFU decrease within 60 minutes of treatments were also determined (minimum effective concentration, MEC10) using 100-fold higher CFUs than in the case of MIC90 studies. Cytotoxic effects on planktonic and on mature biofilms of Candida species at MEC10 concentrations were further evaluated with fluorescent live/dead discrimination techniques. Candida glabrata, Candida guilliermondii, and Candida parapsilosis were the species most sensitive to Ar and Sc. Ar and Sc were also found to promote the accumulation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) by increasing oxidative stress at their respective MEC10 concentrations against the tested planktonic Candida species. Ar and Sc possess dose-dependent antifungal action but the underlying mechanism type (fungistatic and fungicidal) is not clear yet. Our data suggest that Ar and Sc found in herbal plants might have potential usage in the fight against Candida biofilms.

INTRODUCTION: Infertility and its treatment impose significant physical and emotional burden on infertile couples. The most commonly used assisted reproductive technology is the In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). Approximately one third of the treatments results in pregnancy. The aim of our study is to explore psychosocial factors that have an influence on the chance of IVF treatment success. METHODS: 104 infertile couples undergoing IVF treatment participated in our research, of which 49 couples achieved pregnancy after treatment and 55 couples did not. The emotional state was assessed by the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, the short form of the Beck Depression Inventory and the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. The coping abilities were measured by the short form of the Ways of Coping Inventory, the Psychological Immune Competence Inventory and the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale. The negative life events were assessed by the short and revised form of the Paykel's Life Events Scale. Data were collected at three occasions: at the beginning of the treatment (T1), before embryo transfer (T2), and before pregnancy test (T3). RESULTS: According to the most important results of the logistic regression analysis, the outcome of the treatment is negatively influenced by the female (p<0.01) and male age (p<0.05). For women, positive affectivity at T1, the Problem analysis coping strategy, the Sense of self-growth personality trait, the Personal competence and Tolerance of negative affect factors were found to be adaptive in respect of treatment success (p<0.05). For men, the IVF outcome was positively influenced by the lower level of depression at T1, the Problem analysis coping strategy and the Sense of control personality trait (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Emotional attitudes of couples towards childbearing and treatment and their coping mechanisms have an influence on the treatment outcome. Therefore, assessment and conscious shaping of these factors may increase the chance of successful treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Childhood traumatization plays a significant role in the etiology of borderline personality disorder. Studies found a significant association between childhood traumatization, dissociation, and nonsuicidal self-injurious behavior. AIM: The aim of our study was to assess dissociation and nonsuicidal self-injury among borderline inpatients and to reveal the association between childhood traumatization, dissociation, and self-injurious behavior. METHOD: The sample consisted of 80 borderline inpatients and 73 depressed control patients. Childhood traumatization, dissociation and self-injurious behavior were assessed by questionnaires. RESULTS: Borderline patients reported severe and multiplex childhood traumatization. Cumulative trauma score and sexual abuse were the strongest predictors of dissociation. Furthermore, we have found that cumulative trauma score and dissociation were highly predictive of self-injurious behavior. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that self-injurious behavior and dissociation in borderline patients can be regarded as indicators of childhood traumatization. Orv Hetil. 2017; 158(19): 740-747.

BACKGROUND: Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a key feature of borderline personality disorder (BPD), which is strongly associated with childhood traumatization. To the best of our knowledge, there has been a lack of studies investigating extensively the characteristics of borderline patients who engage in extremely high numbers of NSSI, and their features of NSSI, trauma history and psychopathology. The aim of this study is to identify groups of borderline inpatients on the basis of the lifetime number of NSSI, and to explore the characteristics of these groups regarding the onset, reasons and methods of NSSI, history of childhood traumatization, and severity of psychopathology. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: 80 psychiatric inpatients with BPD were included in the study, of whom 63 had a history of NSSI and 17 had not. The frequency and characteristics of NSSI were assessed by the Ottawa Self-Injury Inventory and the childhood traumatization were assessed by the Traumatic Antecedents Questionnaire and the Early Trauma Inventory. RESULTS: In this study among self-injuring borderline inpatients a super self-injuring group was identified, who engaged in extremely high numbers of NSSI (75.0±28.4 acts/lifetime). Compared to moderate self-injurers, super self-injurers began harming themselves at a younger age (p=0.008), used more severe forms of NSSI, and all of them reported an anti-dissociation function of NSSI. Adverse childhood experiences were more prevalent in the super self-injuring group. The strongest predictors of the lifetime number of NSSI were early sexual abuse (p<0.001), intrafamilial physical abuse (p<0.001), a higher cumulative trauma score (p=0.030) and a greater number of BPD criteria (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that the frequency of NSSI in borderline inpatients can be seen as an indicator of clinically-relevant anamnestic data, namely, of the severity, complexity and onset of childhood traumatization, and of the severity of current borderline psychopathology.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The focus of our study was the etiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder from attachment aspects. Our aim was to examine the representations of perceived parental treatment, attachment patterns and the level of emotion regulation of people who suffer from obsessive-compulsive disorder. METHOD: 223 people participated in our study. The clinical group consisted of 92 persons with obsessive-compulsive symptoms, while the control group involved 131 people without OC symptoms. In the study we used the Young Parenting Inventory, the Relationship Questionnaire, and the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale. Besides we compiled a questionnaire based on the DSM-5 and a demographic questionnaire. Respondents could fill the questionnaires online. RESULTS: The clinical group is characterized by significantly higher toxic frustration of each five basic emotional needs than the control group. Specifically, in the case of people with OC smptoms the toxic parental treatments for Defectiveness/ Shame, Dependence/Incompetence, Enmeshment/Undeveloped self, Entitlement/Grandiosity, Approval-seeking/ Recognition-seeking, Negativity/Pessimism, Emotional inhibition, Unrelenting standards/Hypercriticalness and Punitiveness were significantly more frequent than in the control group. The OC group is also characterized by significantly lower rate of secure attachment style, while dismissive attachment style proved to be the most frequent attachment style among them. The OC group also struggle with significantly higher level of emotion regulation difficulties.

Recently, we reported elevated proportions of circulating follicular T helper cells and higher levels of interleukin- (IL-) 21 in primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). Interaction of invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells with B cells and granzyme B (GrB) production may be also important in pSS. Thirty-two pSS patients and 24 healthy controls were enrolled in our study. We investigated the expression of intracellular GrB and IL-21 receptor (IL-21R) of CD19(+)CD5(+) and CD19(+)CD5(-) B cells; furthermore, we determined the IL-21 expression of iNKT cells as well. We also assessed the proportion of transitional (CD19(+)CD24(high)CD38(high)), mature (CD19(+)CD24(int)CD38(int)) and primarily memory (CD19(+)CD24(high)CD38(-)) B cells. CD5(+) but not CD5(-) B cells showed elevated GrB and IL-21R expression in pSS; additionally IL-21 expression of iNKT cells was also elevated. The ratios of transitional and mature B cells were elevated in pSS, while primarily memory B cell percentages were decreased, which correlated with GrB and IL-21R expression of CD19(+) B cells. Our results suggest that enhanced IL-21R expression of CD19(+)CD5(+) B cells and production of IL-21 by iNKT cells may play an important role in the pathogenesis of pSS by regulating CD19(+)CD5(+) B cell functions and increasing GrB production, presumably leading to a counter-regulatory effect in the disease.

In water/2-propanol mixtures [RhCl(mtppms)(3)] (mtppms = monosulfonated triphenylphosphine) was an efficient catalyst for the selective C=C reduction of trans-3-phenyl-2-propenal (trans-cinnamaldehyde) by hydrogen transfer from formate at temperatures as low as 30 °C. An outstandingly high catalyst turnover frequency of 1214 h(-1) was determined at 70 °C. A possible mechanism of the reaction is suggested on the basis of kinetic studies and (1)H- and (31)P-NMR spectroscopic identification of the major Rh(I) species in the reaction mixtures as cis-mer-[H(2)RhX(mtppms)(3)] (X = HCOO(-) or H(2)O). It was established that a large part but not all of the rate increase observed in water/2-propanol mixtures in comparison with systems with neat water as solvent was the consequence of complete dissolution of trans-cinnamaldehyde on the effect of the co-solvent. Nevertheless, the rate showed a significant further increase with increasing 2-propanol concentration even in homogeneous solution and this was ascribed to changes in the solvent structure. The high catalyst activity in this solvent mixture allowed the transfer hydrogenation of citral. Although good to excellent conversions were observed at 30-70 °C, a useful degree of selectivity in hydrogenation of C=C vs. C=O bonds could not be achieved.

Recently, we revealed the importance of follicular helper T cells (T(FH)) in the pathogenesis of primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). In the present study, we focused on the site of the inflammation and determined the composition of lymphocyte infiltration in labial salivary gland (LSG) biopsies with special emphasis on T(FH) and germinal center B cells. We selected tissue blocks obtained from ten patients at the time of disease onset. Detection of cell specific markers was performed with immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence stainings. We evaluated patients' clinical and laboratory features retrospectively and assessed the relation between disease course and early histopathological findings. LSG biopsies were graded based on the extension and arrangement level of periductal inflammatory cell infiltrates. T(FH) cell markers (CD84, PD-1, and Bcl-6) occurred predominantly in more organized structures with higher focus scores. The coexpression of CD3 and Bcl-6 markers clearly identified T(FH) cells close to Bcl-6(+) B cells with the typical formation of germinal centers. Systemic features were developed later in the disease course only in patients with highly structured infiltrates and the presence of T(FH) cells. Our observations suggest that the presence of T(FH) cells in LSGs at the disease onset may predict a more pronounced clinical course of pSS.

In systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), cardiovascular complications are among the leading causes of death. Cardiovascular risk in SLE is even higher in the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies or secondary antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). The aim of this retrospective, single-center study was to investigate the occurrence of antiphospholipid antibodies and non-thrombotic cardiac manifestations in 369 SLE patients. We also assessed the clinical and laboratory characteristics of the patients to reveal the risk factors for cardiac manifestations. Patients were divided into two groups based on the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies (APA); 258 (69.9%) patients were APA positive, and 111 (30.1%) patients were APA negative. Mitral and tricuspid insufficiency, aortic stenosis and pulmonary arterial hypertension were more common in APA-positive patients. Anticardiolipin IgG showed the strongest correlation with any non-thrombotic cardiac manifestations. Based on our results, the adjusted global antiphospholipid syndrome score (aGAPSS) above 8.5 is predictive of valvulopathies and ischemic heart disease, while aGAPSS above 9.5 is predictive of cardiomyopathies. The presence of antiphospholipid antibodies may affect the development of cardiac manifestations in SLE. Periodic cardiological and echocardiographic screening of patients without cardiac complaints, as well as regular monitoring of antiphospholipid antibodies, have great importance during the treatment of SLE patients.

The role of spirituality in health and disease is a complex and emerging area of research. Incorporating spirituality into the bio-psycho-social model of health and disease leading to the bio-psycho-social-spiritual model provides a more comprehensive framework. In this context, chronic disorders like primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) are of interest due to their intricate interactions between biological, psychological, and spiritual factors. This study explored the relationship between spirituality, immune parameters, and disease activity in pSS patients. Data from 108 patients were analyzed, including self-assessed spirituality (answering to direct questions and completing the Spiritual Transcendence Scale), immunological parameters and disease activity scores. The findings revealed several associations. Individuals with spiritual attitudes or engaged in regular prayer/meditation showed lower serum levels of autoantibodies specific to pSS and lower disease activity scores. Spiritual engagement was also linked to decreased perceived skin and tracheal dryness, suggesting potential benefits for physical symptoms. These findings suggest that spirituality may play a significant role in modulating immune responses and disease activity in pSS patients. The study underscores the importance of considering spirituality as an integral part of the holistic approach to health and disease, further expanding the understanding of the interconnectedness of biological, psychological, and spiritual dimensions.

Until the recent years, substances containing radioactive 61Cu were strongly considered as potential positron-emitting radiopharmaceuticals for use in positron emission tomography (PET) applications; however, due to their suitably long half-life, and generator-independent and cost-effective production, they seem to be economically viable for human imaging. Since malignant melanoma (MM) is a major public health problem, its early diagnosis is a crucial contributor to long-term survival, which can be achieved using radiolabeled α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone analog NAPamide derivatives. Here, we report on the physicochemical features of a new CB-15aneN5-based Cu(II) complex ([Cu(KFTGdiac)]-) and the ex vivo and in vivo characterization of its NAPamide conjugate. The rigid chelate possesses prompt complex formation and suitable inertness (t1/2 = 18.4 min in 5.0 M HCl at 50 °C), as well as excellent features in the diagnosis of B16-F10 melanoma tumors (T/M(SUVs) (in vivo): 12.7, %ID/g: 6.6 ± 0.3, T/M (ex vivo): 22).

The aim of this study was to investigate the possible role of follicular helper T (TFH) cells in the pathogenesis of primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) by analyzing immune-competent cells and serological markers with special emphasis on clinical symptoms. We enrolled 50 pSS patients and 16 healthy individuals in the study. Patients had elevated ratio of peripheral TFH cells, however, when dividing patients into two groups defined by the presence of extraglandular manifestations (EGMs), only patients with EGMs differed from controls significantly. Moreover, TFH cell percentages correlated positively with both activated T cell and Tr1 cell values. On the contrary, TFH cell percentages showed negative correlation with both IgM and IgG memory B cell proportions. Elevated TFH percent\ages were observed in the anti-SSA/SSB positive patients, and also in patients with higher IL-12, IL-21 levels and focus score values. Increased TFH cell proportions seem to have an important role in disease development.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is often associated with antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), which potentially results in a more severe disease course and reduced life expectancy. Since the therapeutic guidelines have been refined in the last 15 years, we assumed that the diseases course has become more favorable. In order to shed light on these achievements, we compared the data of SLE patients diagnosed before and since 2004. In our retrospective study, we assessed a wide spectrum of clinical and laboratory data of 554 SLE patients who received regular follow-up care and therapy at our autoimmune center. Among these patients, 247 had antiphospholipid antibodies (APAs) without clinical signs of APS, and 113 had definitive APS. In the APS group, among patients diagnosed since 2004, deep vein thrombosis (p = 0.049) and lupus anticoagulant positivity (p = 0.045) were more frequent, while acute myocardial infarction was less frequent (p = 0.021) compared with patients diagnosed before 2004. Among the APA positive patients without definitive APS, anti-cardiolipin antibody positivity (p = 0.024) and development of chronic renal failure (p = 0.005) decreased in patients diagnosed since 2004. Our study demonstrates that the disease course has changed in recent years; however, in the presence of APS, we have to expect repeated thrombotic events despite adequate anticoagulant therapy.
