Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic, with over 83 million confirmed cases and 1.8 million deaths, has raised concerns about long-term cognitive issues, especially in populations facing disparities. Despite a few years since Peru's first COVID-19 wave, the cognitive effects on adults remain unclear. This study is the first in Peru to explore COVID-19's impact on general cognition and executive function. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study compared individuals with COVID-19 history to controls, assessing general cognition, verbal fluency, attention, and executive function. Among 240 assessed, 154 met the study inclusion criteria, with about 60% female and an average age of 38.89 ± 16.001 years. Groups included controls (n = 42), acute phase (AP, n = 74) (1-14 days of symptoms), and hyperinflammatory phase (HP, n = 38) (>14 days of symptoms). Results: Significant cognitive differences were observed. The HP group exhibited lower general cognitive performance (p = 0.02), working memory (p = 0.01), and executive function (planning; p < 0.001; flexibility; p = 0.03) than controls. Those with <14 days of illness (AP vs. HP) had deficits in general cognitive performance (p = 0.02), working memory (p = 0.02), and planning (p < 0.001), mainly during the hyperinflammatory phase, showing differences in working memory (p = 0.003) and planning (p = 0.01). Gender differences emerged, with males in the HP phase having poorer working memory (p = 0.003) and planning (p = 0.01). Discussion: This study underscores COVID-19's negative impact on cognitive function, even in mild cases, with potential heightened effects in men during acute or hyperinflammatory phases. The findings provide Peru's first evidence, highlighting the vulnerability of populations facing socioeconomic disparities.

BACKGROUND: Latin American countries have been profoundly affected by COVID-19. Due to the alarming incidence of identified cases, we intended to explore which psychosocial elements may influence poor adherence to the mandatory control measures among the population. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess Peruvians' knowledge, attitudes, and vulnerability perception during the coronavirus outbreak. METHOD: We collected data from 225 self-selected participants using a web-based cross-sectional survey. RESULTS: The overall respondents were between 18 and 29 years old (56.8%), female (59.5%), belonged to educated groups, and graduated professionals (69.3%), most of them. Logistic regression showed that Knowledge is highly associated with education (p = 0.031), occupation (p = 0.002), and age (p = 0.016). Our study identified that, although people reported adequate Knowledge by identifying expected symptoms and virus transmission ways in COVID-19 disease. There is a significant perceived susceptibility to contracting the mentioned virus, displaying stigmatized behavior (59.1%) and fear of contracting the virus from others (70.2%). Additionally, it is reported to lack people's confidence in national health authorities regarding sanitary responses (62.7%), preparedness for the disease (76.9%), and the lack of adequate measures to deal with it (51.1%). CONCLUSION: We found that age, education, and occupation modulate Knowledge. At the same time, only age affected Perception and Attitude. Public policies should consider specific guidelines on knowledge translation and risk communication strategies for both containing psychological responses promptly and ensuring compliance with general control measures by the population.

Millions of dollars have been lost in dementia research over the last 30 years owing to unsuccessful clinical trials aimed at finding an effective treatment for the condition. Although two promising drugs have been identified, the research effort is insufficient. The dehumanization of patients and the pressure to publish have led to a decline in the quality and usefulness of scientific research. One way to tackle these problems is establishing close contact with those who put their faith in researchers. Fine-tuning the participation of patients with dementia and caregivers in research design and improving their connection and communication with researchers could positively contribute to enhancing the perspectives and designing strategies for scientists in order to generate a new and enriching vision. The Walking the Talk for Dementia event showed that people can still live with dementia despite their condition. Approximately 300 people participated in the all-week "Santiago's Camino" symposium. People living with dementia, caregivers, healthcare professionals, activists, clinicians, and researchers participated in this event. The "Walking the Talk for Dementia" (WTD) event vividly demonstrated a strong commitment to upholding Global Brain Health Institute's (GBHI) core values of Authenticity, Fairness, Openness, Respect, Courage, and Empathy (A FORCE) to advance equity in brain health. These values provide clear guidance for their advocacy initiatives aimed at mitigating the global impact of dementia. Research and development are essential across scientific fields, especially in clinical contexts where involving patients and caregivers is critical. The WTD initiative exemplifies this aspect by bringing together researchers, caregivers, and dementia patients on the Camino de Santiago in Spain.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment and dementia may result from a combination of modifiable and nonmodifiable risk and protective factors, such as the environment, educational attainment, time devoted to cognitively stimulating activities, and physical activity. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the mediating role of sociodemographic characteristics and lifestyle factors in the years of education and cognitive performance in Peruvian adults. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 1,478 subjects assessed by Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination Revised (ACE-R). Using mediation models, we evaluated the mediation role of parents' educational level, reading time (RT), and physical activity time (PAT) in the years of education (IYE) and cognitive performance. RESULTS: People who reported having lived in an urban area during their childhood are estimated to have, on average, 2.085 years more formal education than those who lived in rural areas. In addition, 49% of cognitive performance scores are explained by the mediation effect of reading and physical activity time in the IYE. This implies that higher levels of education, mediated by RT and PAT per week, are 1.596 units associated with higher scores on the ACE-R. CONCLUSION: Despite the fact that nonmodifiable factors (i.e., childhood residence area, parents' educational level) seem to exert an effect on older adults' cognition, their influence is mediated by other factors that are indeed modifiable (i.e., reading time, physical activity engagement). In this sense, lifestyle changes could help prevent or decrease the risk of cognitive impairment and reduce the disease's impact on vulnerable environments in Latin American and Caribbean countries.

In neuropsychological evaluation, verbal fluency is a crucial measure of cognitive function, but this measure requires standardized and normative data for use. The present study aimed to obtain validation and normative data for the verbal fluency task in the Peruvian population, with participants ranging from 6 to 94 years and varying in age, educational level, and sex. We recruited 2602 healthy individuals and used linear regression analysis to determine the effect of age, sex, and educational level. We also evaluated internal consistency between categories and phonological tasks with Cronbach's alpha and Pearson's correlation analysis and calculated test-retest reliability after three months. We found significant effects of age, educational level, and sex on phonological and semantic fluency. Participants with more than 12 years of education had the highest scores overall. Regarding age, middle-aged participants (between 31 and 40 years old) had the highest scores; scores gradually decreased outside of this age range. Regarding sex, men performed better than women. These results will increase the ability of clinicians to precisely determine the degree to which verbal fluency is affected in patients of different ages and educational levels.
