RESUMO

Cassia tora Linn. is an annual or perennial plant of the Fabaceae/Leguminosae family. It is used in traditional medicine for various biological activities including anti-constipation, anti-inflammatory, visual acuity, and hepato-protective activities. The present study was carried out to investigate the potential toxicity of C. tora L. seed ethanol extract (CTSEE) following a 13-week repeated oral administration to Sprague-Dawley rats. CTSEE was administered orally to male and female rats for 13 weeks at 0 (control), 500, 1000, and 2000 mg/kg/day (n = 10, for male and female rats for each dose). Additional recovery groups from the control group and high dose group were observed for a 4-week recovery period. At the end of the treatment and recovery periods, animals were sacrificed, and their organs were weighed and blood samples collected. There were no treatment-related adverse effects in clinical signs, body weight, food consumption, estrous cycle, sperm parameters, urinalysis, hematology, serum biochemistry, necropsy findings, organ weight, and histopathology at any doses tested. Under the present experimental conditions, the no-observed-adverse-effect level of the CTSEE was >2000 mg/kg/day in both genders, and no target organs were identified.

RESUMO

Misalignment of the aperture diaphragm present in optical microscopes results in angular illumination asymmetry (ANILAS) at the sample plane. Here we show that through-focus propagation of ANILAS results in a lateral image shift with a focus position. This could lead to substantial errors in quantitative results for optical methods that use through-focus images such as three-dimensional nanoparticle tracking, confocal microscopy, and through-focus scanning optical microscopy (TSOM). A correlation exists between ANILAS and the slant in TSOM images. Hence, the slant in the TSOM image can be used to detect, analyze, and rectify the presence of ANILAS.

RESUMO

We develop a terahertz lens with both subwavelength resolution and tunable far-field focal length by extending the surface plasmon (SP) diffraction theory into spoof SPs of slit-groove-structure terahertz metamaterials. The dispersion properties of terahertz groove structures are engineered in the curved depth profile to produce a directional beaming feature and mimic SPs at the same time. The finite-difference time-domain simulation results confirm that the far-field focal position can be tuned by controlling the curvature of the relative electric field phase distribution profile on the output surface.

RESUMO

An anti-oxidant Cu layer was achieved by remote mode N2 plasma. Remote mode plasma treatment offers the advantages of having no defect formation, such as pinholes, by energetic ions. In this study, an activated Cu surface by Ar plasma chemically reacted with N free radicals to evenly form Cu nitride passivation over the entire Cu surface. According to chemical state analysis using XPS, Cu oxidation was effectively prevented in air, and the thickness of the Cu nitride passivation was within 3 nm. Based on statistical analysis using the DOE technique with N2 plasma variables, namely, RF power, working pressure, and plasma treatment time, we experimentally demonstrated that a lower RF power is the most effective for forming uniform Cu nitride passivation because of a lower plasma density. When the N2 plasma density reached approximately 109 cm-3 in which the remote mode was generated, high energy electrons in the plasma were significantly reduced and the amount of oxygen detected on the Cu surface was minimized. Finally, low temperature (300 °C) Cu-Cu bonding was performed with a pair of the anti-oxidant Cu layers formed by the remote mode N2 plasma. Cu atomic diffusion with new grains was observed across the bonded interface indicating significantly improved bonding quality over bare Cu-Cu bonding.

RESUMO

This study investigated the association between physical exercise and cognitive function in Koreans aged 45 years or above without dementia. Data from the 2006 to 2018 Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA) were used. The general characteristics of the study population were investigated using analysis of variance (ANOVA). The association between total exercise time per week and cognitive function, measured based on the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores, was investigated using the generalized estimating equation (GEE) model. Subgroup analysis was conducted based on age, educational level, and marital status. A total of 8888 participants were investigated, of which 5173 (58.2%) individuals did not exercise regularly. Among participants who did exercise, 676 (7.6%) individuals were categorized into the Q1, 1157 (13.0%) into the Q2, 908 (10.2%) into the Q3, and 974 (11.0%) into the Q4 group. The mean MMSE score was 26.81 ± 3.17. Compared to the 'no' exercise group, better MMSE scores were found in the Q1 (ß: 0.3523, p ≤ 0.0001), the Q2 (ß: 0.2011, p ≤ 0.0001), the Q3 (ß: 0.4075, p ≤ 0.0001), and the Q4 groups (ß: 0.3144, p ≤ 0.0001) after adjustment. The magnitude of this association was stronger in participants aged 65 years or above and in single or separated individuals. The findings of this study confirm a positive association between physical exercise and MMSE scores in the middle aged and elderly.

RESUMO

Based on tunable diode laser spectroscopy with direct absorption measurement, we developed a reliable measurement scheme which can precisely detect water vapor concentration independent of the scattering (attenuation) caused by the non-water dust particles inside the observed humidity chamber. The relative water vapor concentration was measured at 2nu(1)+nu(3) water vapor transition band by 938 nm distributed feed-back diode laser at different temperatures using the tunable diode laser spectroscopy technique. These relative water vapor concentrations are converted into the absolute water vapor concentrations and we confirmed that the experimental results at different temperatures are consistently independent of the attenuation. Our measurement system gives the consistent water vapor concentrations without regard to either high or low scattering caused by the non-water dust particles inside the observed humidity chamber.

RESUMO

Intrinsic loss of absorption in the Ag slab near-field superlens turned out to add a blurring effect to the ideal image reconstruction for the impedance match case. By optimizing the real part of the permittivity (epsilon') of Ag, our FDTD calculation predicts approximately 69% enhancement of visibility and approximately 138% increased depth of field for the intensity contrast of 0.5 with similar focal spot size. For a near-field superlens with the higher absorption loss, the optimized image quality is obtained with a larger impedance mismatch, which can be realized by changing the wavelength of incident light for imaging.

RESUMO

We demonstrate a method to trap a selected dielectric microparticle in air using radiation pressure from a single-beam gradient optical trap. Randomly scattered dielectric microparticles adhered to a glass substrate are momentarily detached using ultrasonic vibrations generated by a piezoelectric transducer (PZT). Then, the optical beam focused on a selected particle lifts it up to the optical trap while the vibrationally excited microparticles fall back to the substrate. A particle may be trapped at the nominal focus of the trapping beam or at a position above the focus (referred to here as the levitation position) where gravity provides the restoring force. After the measurement, the trapped particle can be placed at a desired position on the substrate in a controlled manner. In this protocol, an experimental procedure for selective optical trap loading in air is outlined. First, the experimental setup is briefly introduced. Second, the design and fabrication of a PZT holder and a sample enclosure are illustrated in detail. The optical trap loading of a selected microparticle is then demonstrated with step-by-step instructions including sample preparation, launching into the trap, and use of electrostatic force to excite particle motion in the trap and measure charge. Finally, we present recorded particle trajectories of Brownian and ballistic motions of a trapped microparticle in air. These trajectories can be used to measure stiffness or to verify optical alignment through time domain and frequency domain analysis. Selective trap loading enables optical tweezers to track a particle and its changes over repeated trap loadings in a reversible manner, thereby enabling studies of particle-surface interaction.

RESUMO

We measure charging of single dielectric microparticles after interaction with a glass substrate using optical tweezers to control the particle, measure its charge with a sensitivity of a few electrons, and precisely contact the particle with the substrate. Polystyrene (PS) microparticles adhered to the substrate can be selected based on size, shape, or optical properties and repeatedly loaded into the optical trap using a piezoelectric (PZT) transducer. Separation from the substrate leads to charge transfer through contact electrification. The charge on the trapped microparticles is measured from the response of the particle motion to a step excitation of a uniform electric field. The particle is then placed onto a target location of the substrate in a controlled manner. Thus, the triboelectric charging profile of the selected PS microparticle can be measured and controlled through repeated cycles of trap loading followed by charge measurement. Reversible optical trap loading and manipulation of the selected particle leads to new capabilities to study and control successive and small changes in surface interactions.

RESUMO

An embedded nanosphere dielectric structure on an a-Si ultrathin film improves weighted absorption from 23.8% to 39.9%. The PMMA embedding layer offers a guided wave mode as well as mechanical robustness, in addition to the resonant whispering gallery modes coupling. Broadband light-trapping enhancements are observed by dielectric surface textured structures of hemispheres, nanocones, nanospheres, or embedded nanospheres.

RESUMO

The ability to render objects invisible with a cloak that fits all objects and sizes is a long-standing goal for optical devices. Invisibility devices demonstrated so far typically comprise a rigid structure wrapped around an object to which it is fitted. Here we demonstrate smart metamaterial cloaking, wherein the metamaterial device not only transforms electromagnetic fields to make an object invisible, but also acquires its properties automatically from its own elastic deformation. The demonstrated device is a ground-plane microwave cloak composed of an elastic metamaterial with a broad operational band (10-12 GHz) and nearly lossless electromagnetic properties. The metamaterial is uniform, or perfectly periodic, in its undeformed state and acquires the necessary gradient-index profile, mimicking a quasi-conformal transformation, naturally from a boundary load. This easy-to-fabricate hybrid elasto-electromagnetic metamaterial opens the door to implementations of a variety of transformation optics devices based on quasi-conformal maps.

RESUMO

Based on conventional colloidal nanosphere lithography, we experimentally demonstrate novel graded-index nanostructures for broadband optical antireflection enhancement including the near-ultraviolet (NUV) region by integrating residual polystyrene antireflective (AR) nanoislands coating arrays with silicon nano-conical-frustum arrays. This is a feasible optimized integration method of two major approaches for antireflective surfaces: quarter-wavelength AR coating and biomimetic moth's eye structure.

RESUMO

Mixed hydrofluoric and nitric acids are widely used as a good etchant for the pickling process of stainless steels. The cost reduction and the procedure optimization in the manufacturing process can be facilitated by optically detecting the concentration of the mixed acids. In this work, we developed a novel method which allows us to obtain the concentrations of hydrofluoric acid (HF) and nitric acid (HNO(3)) mixture samples with high accuracy. The experiments were carried out for the mixed acids which consist of the HF (0.5-3wt%) and the HNO(3) (2-12wt%) at room temperature. Fourier Transform Raman spectroscopy has been utilized to measure the concentration of the mixed acids HF and HNO(3), because the mixture sample has several strong Raman bands caused by the vibrational mode of each acid in this spectrum. The calibration of spectral data has been performed using the partial least squares regression method which is ideal for local range data treatment. Several figures of merit (FOM) were calculated using the concept of net analyte signal (NAS) to evaluate performance of our methodology.
