RESUMO
A metabolic imbalance between lipid synthesis and degradation can lead to hepatic lipid accumulation, a characteristic of patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Here, we report that high-fat-diet-induced sterol regulatory element-binding protein (SREBP)-1c, a key transcription factor that regulates lipid biosynthesis, impairs autophagic lipid catabolism via altered H2S signaling. SREBP-1c reduced cystathionine gamma-lyase (CSE) via miR-216a, which in turn decreased hepatic H2S levels and sulfhydration-dependent activation of Unc-51-like autophagy-activating kinase 1 (ULK1). Furthermore, Cys951Ser mutation of ULK1 decreased autolysosome formation and promoted hepatic lipid accumulation in mice, suggesting that the loss of ULK1 sulfhydration was directly associated with the pathogenesis of NAFLD. Moreover, silencing of CSE in SREBP-1c knockout mice increased liver triglycerides, confirming the connection between CSE, autophagy, and SREBP-1c. Overall, our results uncover a 2-fold mechanism for SREBP-1c-driven hepatic lipid accumulation through reciprocal activation and inhibition of hepatic lipid biosynthesis and degradation, respectively.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to compare the image quality and focal lesion detection ability of hepatobiliary phase (HBP) images obtained using compressed sensing (CS) and controlled aliasing in parallel imaging results in higher acceleration (CAIPIRINHA) in patients with liver cirrhosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively included 244 gadoxetic acid-enhanced liver MRI from 244 patients with cirrhosis obtained by two HBP images using CS and CAIPIRINHA from July 2020 to December 2020. The optimized resolution and scan time for CS-HBP and CAIPIRINHA-HBP were 0.9 × 0.9 × 1.5 mm3 and 15 s and 1.3 × 1.3 × 3 mm3 and 16 s, respectively. We compared the image quality between the two sets of images in 244 patients and focal lesion (n = 294) analyses for 112 patients. RESULTS: CS-HBP showed comparable overall image quality (3.7 ± 0.9 vs. 3.6 ± 0.8, p = 0.680), superior liver edge sharpness (3.9 ± 0.6 vs. 3.6 ± 0.5, p < 0.001), and fewer respiratory motion artifacts (4.0 ± 0.7 vs. 3.8 ± 0.5, p < 0.001), but higher non-respiratory artifacts (3.4 ± 0.7 vs. 3.6 ± 0.6, p < 0.001) and subjective image noise (3.5 ± 0.8 vs. 3.6 ± 0.7, p = 0.014) than CAIPIRINHA-HBP. CS-HBP showed a higher signal-to-noise ratio in the liver than CAIPIRINHA-HBP (20.9 ± 9.0 vs. 18.9 ± 7.1, p = 0.008). The pooled sensitivity, specificity, and AUC were 90.0%, 77.5%, and 0.84 for CS-HBP and 73.5%, 82.4%, and 0.78 for CAIPIRINHA-HBP, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: CS-HBP showed better focal lesion detection ability, comparable overall image quality, and fewer respiratory motion artifacts, but higher non-respiratory artifacts and noise compared to CAIPIRINHA-HBP. Thus, CS-HBP could be recommended for liver MRI in patients with cirrhosis to improve diagnostic performance. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: Thin-slice CS-HBP may be useful for detecting sub-centimeter hepatocellular carcinoma in cirrhotic patients with Child-Pugh classification A while maintaining comparable subjective image quality. KEY POINTS: ⢠Compared with controlled aliasing in parallel imaging results in higher acceleration, compressed sensing hepatobiliary phase yielded thinner slices and shorter scan time at a higher accelerating factor. ⢠Compressed sensing hepatobiliary phase showed comparable overall image quality, superior liver edge sharpness, and fewer respiratory motion artifacts, but higher non-respiratory artifacts and subjective image noise than controlled aliasing in parallel imaging results in higher acceleration-hepatobiliary phase. ⢠Compressed sensing hepatobiliary phase can detect sub-centimeter hepatocellular carcinoma in cirrhotic patients with Child-Pugh classification A.

Wireless local area networks (WLANs) have recently evolved into technologies featuring extremely high throughput and ultra-high reliability. As WLANs are predominantly utilized in Internet of Things (IoT) and Wi-Fi-enabled sensor applications powered by coin cell batteries, these high-efficiency, high-performance technologies often cause significant battery depletion. The introduction of the trigger frame-based uplink transmission method, designed to enhance network throughput, lacks adequate security measures, enabling attackers to manipulate trigger frames. Devices receiving such frames must respond immediately; however, if a device receives a fake trigger frame, it fails to enter sleep mode, continuously sending response signals and thereby increasing power consumption. This problem is specifically acute in next-generation devices that support multi-link operation (MLO), capable of simultaneous transmission and reception across multiple links, rendering them more susceptible to battery draining attacks than conventional single-link devices. To address this, this paper introduces a Secure Triggering Frame-Based Dynamic Power Saving Mechanism (STF-DPSM) specifically designed for multi-link environments. Experimental results indicate that even in a multi-link environment with only two links, the STF-DPSM improves energy efficiency by an average of approximately 55.69% over conventional methods and reduces delay times by an average of approximately 44.7% compared with methods that consistently utilize encryption/decryption and integrity checks.
RESUMO
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the recall rate and performance of free-breathing T1W dynamic imaging in patients who underwent gadoxetic acid-enhanced liver MRI. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent free-breathing dynamic T1WI liver MRI using Cartesian (XD-VIBE) or self-gated radial (SG-GRASP) sequences at two institutions. Four radiologists independently reviewed the overall image quality, streak, and motion artifacts for precontrast, arterial, and portal venous phases on a 4-point scale. Hepatic observations were annotated and assessed according to LI-RADS v2018. RESULTS: In total, 360 patients were included (XD-VIBE [n = 253], SG-GRASP [n = 107]). The overall image quality of free-breathing T1WI was 3.4 ± 0.4, 3.2 ± 0.4, and 3.5 ± 0.4 for precontrast, arterial, and portal venous phases, respectively. The actual recall rate was 0.6% (2/360). The SG-GRASP group showed fewer motion artifacts and more streak artifacts than the XD-VIBE group in all phases (p < 0.001 for all). The overall image quality was not significantly different between the two sequences in arterial (3.2 ± 0.4 in both, p = 0.607) and portal venous phases (3.5 ± 0.4 in XD-VIBE, 3.4 ± 0.4 in SG-GRASP, p = 0.214). Two sequences did not show significant differences in the lesion detection rate (figure of merit, FOM: 0.67 vs. 0.68, p = 0.876) or diagnostic performance for hepatocellular carcinoma (FOM: 0.55 vs. 0.62, p = 0.105). CONCLUSIONS: Both XD-VIBE and SG-GRASP provided sufficient image quality for patients at risk of developing motion artifacts, without significant differences in image quality or the lesion detection rate between sequences. KEY POINTS: ⢠The overall image quality of free-breathing T1-weighted images using Cartesian or radial sequences was 3.4 ± 0.4, 3.2 ± 0.4, and 3.5 ± 0.4 for precontrast, arterial, and portal venous phases, respectively. ⢠Only 0.3% (1/360) had undiagnostic exams and the actual recall rate was 0.6% (2/360) in patients who underwent free-breathing dynamic T1WI. ⢠The overall lesion detection rate was 0.67 without a significant difference between Cartesian and radial sequences (figure of merit: 0.67 vs. 0.68, respectively, p = 0.876).

OBJECTIVES: To develop and validate risk scoring systems using gadoxetic acid-enhanced liver MRI features and clinical factors that predict recurrence-free survival (RFS) of a single hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS: Consecutive 295 patients with treatment-naïve single HCC who underwent curative surgery were retrospectively enrolled from two centers. Cox proportional hazard models developed risk scoring systems whose discriminatory powers were validated using external data and compared to the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) or American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging systems using Harrell's C-index. RESULTS: Independent variables-tumor size (per cm; hazard ratio [HR], 1.07; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.02-1.13; p = 0.005), targetoid appearance (HR, 1.74; 95% CI: 1.07-2.83; p = 0.025), radiologic tumor in vein or tumor vascular invasion (HR, 2.59; 95% CI: 1.69-3.97; p < 0.001), the presence of a nonhypervascular hypointense nodule on the hepatobiliary phase (HR, 4.65; 95% CI: 3.03-7.14; p < 0.001), and pathologic macrovascular invasion (HR, 2.60; 95% CI: 1.51-4.48; p = 0.001)-with tumor markers (AFP ≥ 206 ng/mL or PIVKA-II ≥ 419 mAU/mL) derived pre- and postoperative risk scoring systems. The risk scores showed comparably good discriminatory powers in the validation set (C-index, 0.75-0.82) and outperformed the BCLC (C-index, 0.61) and AJCC staging systems (C-index, 0.58; ps < 0.05). The preoperative scoring system stratified the patients into low-, intermediate-, and high-risk for recurrence, whose 2-year recurrence rate was 3.3%, 31.8%, and 85.7%, respectively. CONCLUSION: The developed and validated pre- and postoperative risk scoring systems can estimate RFS after surgery for a single HCC. KEY POINTS: ⢠The risk scoring systems predicted RFS better than the BCLC and AJCC staging systems (C-index, 0.75-0.82 vs. 0.58-0.61; ps < 0.05). ⢠Five variables-tumor size, targetoid appearance, radiologic tumor in vein or vascular invasion, the presence of a nonhypervascular hypointense nodule on the hepatobiliary phase, and pathologic macrovascular invasion-combined with tumor markers derived risk scoring systems predicting postsurgical RFS for a single HCC. ⢠In the risk scoring system using preoperatively-available factors, patients were classified into three distinct risk groups, with 2-year recurrence rates in the low-, intermediate-, and high-risk groups being 3.3%, 31.8%, and 85.7% in the validation set.

We report the iron-catalyzed α-amination of ketones with sulfonamides. Using an oxidative coupling approach, ketones can be directly coupled with free sulfonamides, without the need for prefunctionalization of either substrate. Primary and secondary sulfonamides are both competent coupling partners, with yields from 55% to 88% for deoxybenzoin-derived substrates.
RESUMO
Age is a risk factor for numerous diseases. Although the development of modern medicine has greatly extended the human lifespan, the duration of relatively healthy old age, or 'healthspan', has not increased. Targeting the detrimental processes that can occur before the onset of age-related diseases can greatly improve health and lifespan. Healthspan is significantly affected by what, when and how much one eats. Dietary restriction, including calorie restriction, fasting or fasting-mimicking diets, to extend both lifespan and healthspan has recently attracted much attention. However, direct scientific evidence that consuming specific foods extends the lifespan and healthspan seems lacking. Here, we synthesized the results of recent studies on the lifespan and healthspan extension properties of foods and their phytochemicals in various organisms to confirm how far the scientific research on the effect of food on the lifespan has reached.

BACKGROUND: Polar microalgae contain unique compounds that enable them to adapt to extreme environments. As the skin barrier is our first line of defense against external threats, polar microalgae extracts may possess restorative properties for damaged skin, but the potential of microalgae extracts as skin protective agents remains unknown. PURPOSE: This study aimed to analyze compound profiles from polar microalgae extracts, evaluate their potential as skin epithelial protective agents, and examine the underlying mechanisms. METHODS: Six different polar microalgae, Micractinium sp. (KSF0015 and KSF0041), Chlamydomonas sp. (KNM0029C, KSF0037, and KSF0134), and Chlorococcum sp. (KSF0003), were collected from the Antarctic or Arctic regions. Compound profiles of polar and non-polar microalgae extracts were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The protective activities of polar microalgae extracts on human keratinocyte cell lines against oxidative stress, radiation, and psoriatic cytokine exposure were assessed. The potential anti-inflammatory mechanisms mediated by KSF0041, a polar microalga with protective properties against oxidative stress, ultraviolet (UV) B, and an inflammatory cytokine cocktail, were investigated using RNA-sequencing analysis. To evaluate the therapeutic activity of KSF0041, an imiquimod-induced murine model of psoriatic dermatitis was used. RESULTS: Polar microalgae contain components comparable to those of their non-polar counterparts, but also showed distinct differences, particularly in fatty acid composition. Polar microalgae extracts had a greater ability to scavenge free radicals than did non-polar microalgae and enhanced the viability of HaCaT cells, a human keratinocyte cell line, following exposure to UVB radiation or psoriatic cytokines. These extracts also reduced barrier integrity damage and decreased mRNA levels of inflammatory cytokines in psoriatic HaCaT cells. Treatment with KSF0041 extract altered the transcriptome of psoriatic HaCaT cells toward a more normal state. Furthermore, KSF0041 extract had a therapeutic effect in a mouse model of psoriasis. CONCLUSIONS: Bioactive compounds from polar microalgae extracts could provide novel therapeutics for damaged and/or inflamed skin.

Gut microbes play diverse roles in modulating host fitness, including longevity; however, the molecular mechanisms underlying their mediation of longevity remain poorly understood. We performed genome-wide screens using 3,792 Escherichia coli mutants and identified 44 E. coli mutants that modulated Caenorhabditis elegans longevity. Three of these mutants modulated C. elegans longevity via the bacterial metabolite methylglyoxal (MG). Importantly, we found that low MG-producing E. coli mutants, Δhns E. coli, extended the lifespan of C. elegans through activation of the DAF-16/FOXO family transcription factor and the mitochondrial unfolded protein response (UPRmt). Interestingly, the lifespan modulation by Δhns did not require insulin/insulin-like growth factor 1 signaling (IIS) but did require TORC2/SGK-1 signaling. Transcriptome analysis revealed that Δhns E. coli activated novel class 3 DAF-16 target genes that were distinct from those regulated by IIS. Taken together, our data suggest that bacteria-derived MG modulates host longevity through regulation of the host signaling pathways rather than through nonspecific damage on biomolecules known as advanced glycation end products. Finally, we demonstrate that MG enhances the phosphorylation of hSGK1 and accelerates cellular senescence in human dermal fibroblasts, suggesting the conserved role of MG in controlling longevity across species. Together, our studies demonstrate that bacteria-derived MG is a novel therapeutic target for aging and aging-associated pathophysiology.

Considering the critical roles of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) in pancreatic cancer, recent studies have attempted to incorporate stromal elements into organoid models to recapitulate the tumor microenvironment. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of patient-derived organoid (PDO) and CAF cultures by using single-pass endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle biopsy (EUS-FNB) samples from prospectively enrolled pancreatic cancer patients. The obtained samples were split into two portions for PDO and CAF cultures. PDOs and CAFs were cultured successfully in 54.4% (31/57) and 47.4% (27/57) of the cases, respectively. Both components were established in 21 cases (36.8%). Various clinicopathologic factors, including the tumor size, tumor location, clinical stage, histologic subtype, and tumor differentiation, did not influence the PDO establishment. Instead, the presence of necrosis in tumor samples was associated with initial PDO generation but no further propagation beyond passage 5 (P = 0.024). The "poorly cohesive cell carcinoma pattern" also negatively influenced the PDO establishment (P = 0.018). Higher stromal proportion in tumor samples was a decisive factor for successful CAF culture (P = 0.005). Our study demonstrated that the coestablishment of PDOs and CAFs is feasible even with a single-pass EUS-FNB sample, implying an expanding role of endoscopists in future precision medicine.

BACKGROUND: Siblings reciprocally contribute to mutual social and physical development. The aim of this review was to examine the health-related behaviors and weight-related outcomes within child-sibling pairs and to determine how these factors vary by sibling composition. METHODS: Following the PRISMA guidelines, a systematic review of studies published since 2000 obtained from MEDLINE, CINAHL, PubMed, Cochrane Reviews, Web of Science, PsycINFO, Health and Wellness, and Science Direct was performed. The eligibility criteria for inclusion were: 1) peer-reviewed and published in English; 2) included children ages 2 to 20 and their siblings; and 3) explored health-related behaviors (i.e., diet) and/or weight-related outcomes (i.e., body weight) within child-sibling dyads. RESULTS: A total of 13 studies were included in the review. The study findings are summarized according to three major themes: 1) sibling concordance in health-related behaviors and weight-related outcomes, 2) differences in health-related behaviors within weight-concordant/weight-discordant sibling dyads, and 3) influence of sibling composition on health-related behaviors and weight-related outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Family-based interventions for childhood obesity may benefit from including siblings as key family members in promoting children's health-related behaviors and preventing excessive weight gain. Future studies should explore variable sibling dynamics (e.g., adoptive siblings) in more culturally/racially diverse families to further explore the role of a sibling in a child's health. IMPLICATIONS TO PRACTICE: The findings of this study may help healthcare providers in developing effective family-based obesity interventions for families with more than one child in their household.

Astrocytes and microglia, the most abundant glial cells in the central nervous system, are involved in maintaining homeostasis in the brain microenvironment and in the progression of various neurological disorders. Lipocalin-2 (LCN2) is a small secretory protein that can be transcriptionally upregulated via nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signaling. It is synthesized and secreted by glial cells, resulting in either the restoration of damaged neural tissues or the induction of neuronal apoptosis in a context-dependent manner. It has recently been reported that when glial cells are under lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammatory stress, either reduced production or accelerated degradation of LCN2 can alleviate neurotoxicity. However, the regulatory mechanisms of LCN2 in glial cells are not yet fully understood. In this study, we used primary astroglial-enriched cells which produce LCN2 and found that the production of LCN2 could be reduced by sodium arsenite treatment. Surprisingly, the reduced LCN2 production was not due to the suppression of NF-κB signaling. Mild oxidative stress induced by sodium arsenite treatment activated antioxidant responses and downregulated Lcn2 expression without reducing the viability of astroglial-enriched cells. Intriguingly, reduced LCN2 production could not be achieved by simple activation of the nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)-Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1) pathway in astroglial-enriched cells. Thus, it appears that mild oxidative stress, occurring in an Nrf2-independent manner, is required for the downregulation of Lcn2 expression. Taken together, our findings provide new insights into the regulatory mechanisms of LCN2 and suggest that mild oxidative stress may alter LCN2 homeostasis, even under neuroinflammatory conditions.

Breast cancer (BC) is the most common cancer in Korean American (KA) women. In view of its high prevalence in these women, their low screening rates, and the cultural influence of BC risk factors in their lifestyles, we developed a community-based culturally tailored BC prevention program, the Korean Breast Cancer Risk Reduction Program (KBCRRP). Guided by the PRECEDE-PROCEDE and health belief models, the KBCRRP was developed to achieve four goals: (1) healthy weight, (2) physically active lifestyle, (3) healthy diet, and (4) BC screening and adherence. KBCRRP combines effective multicomponent strategies for BC screening and a group-based lifestyle intervention incorporating traditional Korean health beliefs and is tailored for BC risk reduction. In this paper, we provide an overview of the program, the process of program development, implementation, and evaluation, and modification during the COVID-19 pandemic. The initial program involved 8 weeks of in-person group education sessions led by interdisciplinary healthcare professionals and 16 weeks of follow-up involving smartphone applications, phone calls, and text messaging from trained lifestyle coaches. Participants received opportunities to obtain free mammography during the program. After feasibility testing, the program was modified by incorporating participants' feedback. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we provided the program using the Zoom video platform. Participants' recruitment and retention during the pandemic was successful, reflecting the fact that virtual delivery of group-based education was a feasible and acceptable alternative to in-person sessions. Collaboration with community organizations serving the target population is the key to developing and sustaining a successful community-based educational program.

Taurine is known to play roles in fatigue recovery and relief of anxiety and stress. This pilot study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary taurine-containing jelly supplementation on the academic-related characteristics of Korean college entrance examinees. The jelly contained 3 g of taurine in a packet and was provided to the subjects with one packet per day for 2 weeks. The academic-related characteristics of subjects were evaluated by academic-related attitude (using School Attitude Assessment Survey-R; SAAS-R), CEES (college entrance examination stress), and SRL (self-regulated learning) and academic achievement and were conducted using a self-administered questionnaire. The total number of subjects in this study was 17, and they were divided into taurine supplementation group (n = 9, TSG) and placebo group (n = 8, PG) by randomization. The results were compared before and after 2 weeks of dietary taurine-containing jelly supplementation for each group. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 25.0. The total score (p = 0.069) and motivation/self-regulation score (p = 0.060) in SAAS-R tended to be significantly higher in the TSG after 2 weeks of supplementation compared to before supplementation. The score change of academic achievement in TSG was positively correlated with a total score change of SRL. In addition, as a result of simple regression analysis, a total score changes of SRL had a positive effect on a change of academic achievement score in TSG (explanatory power: 42.9%). The results of this pilot study showed that dietary taurine-containing jelly supplementation may have some effects on academic-related characteristics with a positive change in SRL. Therefore, it may be beneficial to supplement dietary taurine-containing jelly to improve academic-related characteristics such as self-regulated learning of students preparing for the college entrance exam.

Recently, taurine-containing jellies have been sold in Korea, which provides a source of dietary taurine suspended in jelly and considered as a snack. This study was conducted to investigate factors (recognition, consumer preference, and improvement points) that potentially increase the willingness of consumers (Korean college students) to purchase the taurine-containing product. A total of 561 subjects were compared according to gender (260 male and 301 female college students) and degree of interest in taurine-containing jelly (276 subjects interest group and 285 subjects in indifferent group). Data were collected using an anonymous self-administered questionnaire and a consumer preference evaluation. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 25.0. The factors most important in determining the willingness to buy taurine-containing jelly were price and efficacy for male students (p < 0.05), taste (p < 0.05), and brand (p < 0.01) for female students. Nutrient and weight were more important in the interest group than the indifferent group (p < 0.05). Preference consumer scores of the taurine-containing jelly rated aroma, texture, and taste significantly higher among male college students than those of the female college students. Moreover, preference scores of all items were significantly higher in the interest group than in the indifferent group. The interest group was more knowledgeable about taurine than the indifferent group (p < 0.001). Willingness to purchase (average 3.1 points) and intention to recommend (average 3.1 points) the taurine-containing B jelly were significantly higher in the interest group than in the indifferent group. Interest in taurine-containing jelly, overall preference, and intention to recommend in all the subjects were shown to significantly positively correlate with their willingness to purchase. These results show that it is necessary to increase the degree of interest, preference, and intention to recommend to improve the willingness to purchase taurine-containing jelly by Korean college students. In particular, since the subjects who had knowledge of taurine were interested in taurine-containing jelly, nutritional education and promotion of taurine should help in the selling of the product.

BACKGROUND: Because much worldwide cancer incidence and mortality is related to modifiable risk factors, many global health organizations provide evidence-based recommendations on healthy weight, diet, and physical activity levels for cancer prevention. Even though adherence to such guidelines is reported to reduce cancer incidence and mortality, this adherence is often suboptimal. Identifying factors related to adherence to the guidelines can suggest interventions to improve health promoting lifestyle behaviors for cancer prevention. OBJECTIVES: Examine a comprehensive set of potentially predictive factors in meeting American Cancer Society's guidelines for healthy weight, fruits and vegetables intake, and physical activity. METHODS: Data used in the analysis were from adults aged 18 years and older without a history of a cancer diagnosis who participated in the Health Information National Trends Survey in 2019 (n = 3407). Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to determine the significant predictors for meeting each of the healthy weight, fruits and vegetables intake, and physical activity guidelines. RESULTS: Overall adherence to each guideline was low: 39.0% met the physical activity guideline, 30.4% met the healthy weight guideline, and 17.6% met the fruits and vegetables intake guideline. Meeting the healthy body weight guideline was greater in current smokers, females, those who had at least some college education, those who did not have a chronic health condition, and those who had very good self-rated health. Meeting the fruits and vegetables intake guideline was greater in females, those who had very good self-rated health, and those who talked to friends or family members regarding their health. Meeting the physical activity guideline was greater in males, those who had household incomes of at least $50,000, those who did not have a chronic health condition, and those who had very good self-rated health. CONCLUSIONS: The current analyses identified a unique set of predictors for meeting each guideline among US adults who reported never having been diagnosed with cancer. Based on these findings, interventions related to each guideline should be especially targeted to individuals having characteristics that were less likely to meet them. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Findings from the current study can assist health care providers who counsel about cancer prevention in the clinical setting.

Considering the increasing scale and severity of damage from recent cybersecurity incidents, the need for fundamental solutions to external security threats has increased. Hence, network separation technology has been designed to stop the leakage of information by separating business computing networks from the Internet. However, security accidents have been continuously occurring, owing to the degradation of data transmission latency performance between the networks, decreasing the convenience and usability of the work environment. In a conventional centralized network connection concept, a problem occurs because if either usability or security is strengthened, the other is weakened. In this study, we proposed a distributed authentication mechanism for secure network connectivity (DAM4SNC) technology in a distributed network environment that requires security and latency performance simultaneously to overcome the trade-off limitations of existing technology. By communicating with separated networks based on the authentication between distributed nodes, the inefficiency of conventional centralized network connection solutions is overcome. Moreover, the security is enhanced through periodic authentication of the distributed nodes and differentiation of the certification levels. As a result of the experiment, the relative efficiency of the proposed scheme (REP) was about 420% or more in all cases.

This paper proposes a development of automatic rib sequence labeling systems on chest computed tomography (CT) images with two suggested methods and three-dimensional (3D) region growing. In clinical practice, radiologists usually define anatomical terms of location depending on the rib's number. Thus, with the manual process of labeling 12 pairs of ribs and counting their sequence, it is necessary to refer to the annotations every time the radiologists read chest CT. However, the process is tedious, repetitive, and time-consuming as the demand for chest CT-based medical readings has increased. To handle the task efficiently, we proposed an automatic rib sequence labeling system and implemented comparison analysis on two methods. With 50 collected chest CT images, we implemented intensity-based image processing (IIP) and a convolutional neural network (CNN) for rib segmentation on this system. Additionally, three-dimensional (3D) region growing was used to classify each rib's label and put in a sequence label. The IIP-based method reported a 92.0% and the CNN-based method reported a 98.0% success rate, which is the rate of labeling appropriate rib sequences over whole pairs (1st to 12th) for all slices. We hope for the applicability thereof in clinical diagnostic environments by this method-efficient automatic rib sequence labeling system.

This study examined mediating effects of body weight control behaviors in the relationship between body weight perception and health-related behaviors among 11,458 U.S. adolescents from the 2010 National Youth Physical Activity and Nutrition Survey. Parallel multiple mediation analysis was performed for the secondary data analysis. Nearly one third of adolescents (32.5%) had overweight or obesity; one quarter (25.0%) perceived themselves as slightly overweight and 5.1% thought they were very overweight. More girls (58.6%) had tried to lose weight than boys (32.3%), while boys were more physically active than girls. Healthy and unhealthy weight control behaviors significantly mediated the relationship between adolescents' body weight perception and health-related behaviors (physical activity and screen time). Teachers and parents should help adolescents have accurate weight perception and utilize reliable and healthy weight control strategies. Future studies should consider the intercorrelated relationships among adolescents' perceptions and behaviors regarding weight to provide successful weight control intervention programs.

Background and Objectives; This study aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes and bone changes before and after intentional replantation (IR) for periodontally compromised teeth by using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods; Fourteen periodontally involved teeth were selected for IR. A preoperative orthodontic procedure was performed to apply luxation, and the tooth was then gently extracted. Retrograde filling of the root-end canal was performed. Once the tooth was repositioned in the socket, it was splinted with the adjacent tooth. After three months, prosthetic restoration was performed. Results; Clinical parameters and CBCT images were obtained before and after the IR procedure. The height of the alveolar bone was measured on the CBCT images by using software. Most preoperative symptoms, including pain, mobility, probing depth (PD) and bleeding on probing (BOP), significantly decreased after IR (pain: 4.71 to 1.00; mobility: 1.36 to 0.29; PD: 5.60 to 2.85; BOP: 3.50 to 0.79). CBCT analysis indicated an increase in bone height after IR (the amount of change: maxilla, 4.00; mandible, 1.95). Conclusions; A previous study reported that IR for periodontally involved teeth is quite limited. However, in this study, IR of periodontally compromised teeth showed favorable results in clinical and radiographic evaluations, suggesting that IR may be an alternative to extraction of teeth with periodontal disease.
