RESUMO

Networks of nanoscale objects are the subject of increasing interest as resistive switching systems for the fabrication of neuromorphic computing architectures. Nanostructured films of bare gold clusters produced in gas phase with thickness well beyond the electrical percolation threshold, show a non-ohmic electrical behavior and resistive switching, resulting in groups of current spikes with irregular temporal organization. Here we report the systematic characterization of the temporal correlations between single spikes and spiking rate power spectrum of nanostructured Au two-terminal devices consisting of a cluster-assembled film deposited between two planar electrodes. By varying the nanostructured film thickness we fabricated two different classes of devices with high and low initial resistance respectively. We show that the switching dynamics can be described by a power law distribution in low resistance devices whereas a bi-exponential behavior is observed in the high resistance ones. The measured resistance of cluster-assembled films shows a [Formula: see text] scaling behavior in the range of analyzed frequencies. Our results suggest the possibility of using cluster-assembled Au films as components for neuromorphic systems where a certain degree of stochasticity is required.

RESUMO

The isospin mixing was deduced in the compound nucleus ^{80}Zr at an excitation energy of E^{*}=54 MeV from the γ decay of the giant dipole resonance. The reaction ^{40}Ca+^{40}Ca at E_{beam}=136 MeV was used to form the compound nucleus in the isospin I=0 channel, while the reaction ^{37}Cl+^{44}Ca at E_{beam}=95 MeV was used as the reference reaction. The γ rays were detected with the AGATA demonstrator array coupled with LaBr_{3}:Ce detectors. The temperature dependence of the isospin mixing was obtained and the zero-temperature value deduced. The isospin-symmetry-breaking correction δ_{C} used for the Fermi superallowed transitions was extracted and found to be consistent with ß-decay data.

RESUMO

Using an innovative time-varying front-end electronics in conjunction with a bulky coaxial high-purity germanium detector, we were able to extend the range of the radionuclide spectra well beyond the analog to digital converter (ADC) saturation point. The electronics automatically conditions the signal for digital-filtering optimization if it is in the ADC voltage range and for time-over-threshold analysis if it exceeds the ADC range. A high spectroscopic resolution has been achieved in both operation ranges. An unprecedented wide energy range from 5 keV to 150 MeV of equivalent energy, or 90 dB, has been obtained using a single acquisition chain, while maintaining a high-energy resolution in the whole spectrum. For example, with an ADC range of 3 MeV a resolution has been obtained of 1.3/2.2 keV full width at half maximum on the 122/1332 keV gamma-ray lines of 57Co and 60Co, and of <0.4% in the time-over-threshold region, or for energy deposits beyond 3 MeV.

RESUMO

An original technique for the measurement of charge signals from ionizing particle/radiation detectors has been implemented in an application-specific integrated circuit form. The device performs linear measurements of the charge both within and beyond its output voltage swing. The device features an unprecedented spectroscopic dynamic range of 102 dB and is suitable for high-resolution ion and X-γ ray spectroscopy. We believe that this approach may change a widespread paradigm according to which no high-resolution spectroscopy is possible when working close to or beyond the limit of the preamplifier's output voltage swing.

RESUMO

Mineral dust aerosol (dust) is widely recognized as a fundamental component of the climate system and is closely coupled with glacial-interglacial climate oscillations of the Quaternary period. However, the direct impact of dust on the energy balance of the Earth system remains poorly quantified, mainly because of uncertainties in dust radiative properties, which vary greatly over space and time. Here we provide the first direct measurements of the aerosol optical thickness of dust particles windblown to central East Antarctica (Dome C) during the last glacial maximum (LGM) and the Holocene. By applying the Single Particle Extinction and Scattering (SPES) technique and imposing preferential orientation to particles, we derive information on shape from samples of a few thousands of particles. These results highlight that clear shape variations occurring within a few years are hidden to routine measurement techniques. With this novel measurement method the optical properties of airborne dust can be directly measured from ice core samples, and can be used as input into climate model simulations. Based on simulations with an Earth System Model we suggest an effect of particle non-sphericity on dust aerosol optical depth (AOD) of about 30% compared to spheres, and differences in the order of ~10% when considering different combinations of particles shapes.

RESUMO

A multichannel silicon pad detector for EXAFS (Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure) applications has been designed and built. The X-ray spectroscopic measurements demonstrate that an adequate energy resolution of 230 eV FWHM (corresponding to 27 rms electrons in silicon) can be achieved reliably at -35 °C. A resolution of 190 eV FWHM (corresponding to 22 rms electrons) has been obtained from individual pads at -35 °C. At room temperature (25 °C) an average energy resolution of 380 eV FWHM is achieved and a resolution of 350 eV FWHM (41 rms electrons) is the best performance. A simple cooling system constituted of Peltier cells is sufficient to reduce the reverse currents of the pads and their related shot noise contribution, in order to achieve resolutions better than 300 eV FWHM which is adequate for the EXAFS applications.

RESUMO

An original low-noise large dynamic-range readout system for optical light spectroscopy with PIN diodes is presented. The front-end circuit is equipped with a smart device for automatic cancellation of the large dc offset brought about by the photodiode current. This device sinks away the exact amount of dc current from the preamplifier input, yielding auto zeroing of the output-voltage offset, while introducing the minimum electronic noise possible. As a result the measurement dynamic-range is maximized. Moreover, an auxiliary inspection point is provided which precisely tracks the dc component of the photodiode current. This output allows for precise beam alignment and may also be used for diagnostic purposes. The excellent gain stability and linearity make the circuit perfectly suited for optical-light pulse spectroscopy. Applications include particle sizing in the 100 nm range, two-dimensional characterization of semiconductor detectors, ultra-precise characterization of laser beam stability, confocal microscopy.

RESUMO

The A/Z dependence of projectile fragmentation at relativistic energies has been studied with the ALADIN forward spectrometer at SIS. A stable beam of (124)Sn and radioactive beams of (124)La and (107)Sn at 600 MeV per nucleon have been used in order to explore a wide range of isotopic compositions. Chemical freeze-out temperatures are found to be nearly invariant with respect to the A/Z of the produced spectator sources, consistent with predictions for expanded systems. Small Coulomb effects (DeltaT approximately 0.6 MeV) appear for residue production near the onset of multifragmentation.
