RESUMO

Calcium phosphate bioceramics has recently experienced increased interest in bone reconstruction. Mimicking of natural structure of bone, like the use of nanomaterials, is an attractive approach for generating scaffolds for bone regeneration. The aim of present study was to evaluate the effect of nanonization on the biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) ceramic in the repair of bone cavities in the canine mandible. A commercial BCP was dry-milled in a high energy planetary ball mill with zirconia balls and container. Three holes (8 mm in diameter) were outlined to the depth of cortical bone of mandibular angle of 5 dogs bilaterally. The first hole (positive control group A, n = 10) was filled in with commercial BCP material. The second hole was loaded with the nanonized BCP (experimental group C, n = 10) and the third one was left untreated (negative control group B, n = 10). The defects were allowed to regenerate for 8 weeks. New bone formation was greater in groups A and C than in B. No difference was seen between group A and group C (P = 0.676). The residual bone material in group C (19.34 ±â€Š8.03) was as much as one-half of that in group A (38.69 ±â€Š7.90%) (P = 0.000). The negative control group B presented the highest amount of soft tissue within the bone defects. The least percentage of marrow space was found in the positive control group (13.23 ±â€Š13.52). Our results depicted that the rate of resorption increased significantly after nanonization even though the nano-sized BCP failed to make a superior regeneration than the ordinary BCP.

BACKGROUND: This study was purposed to evaluate palatal width, height, and height index at various stages of dentition in Iranian children and adolescent with normal occlusion. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on a random sample of 237 children (45% male and 55% female, aged 5-18 years) with normal occlusion selected from kindergartens and elementary and high schools in Hamadan, Iran. The subjects were clinically examined and classified based on dentition to primary (21.5%), mixed (21.9%), and permanent (56.5%) stages. Dental casts were obtained from all subjects. Palatal width (inter-molar and -canine distances), and height (at molar and canine areas) were measured on the casts by Korkhaus' compass and digital caliper. Palatal height index was calculated for each dentition stage. Data were analyzed by SPSS 15 using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post hoc test and t- test (p <  0.05). RESULTS: Palatal inter-molar and -canine width values were increased from primary to permanent dentition. Palatal height and palatal height index in mixed dentition were significantly lower than those in primary and permanent dentition. Palatal width at inter-molar and -canine distances was significantly higher in males than females. There was no significant difference in palatal height and palatal height index at molar area between males and females. However, palatal height and palatal height index at canine area were significantly higher in males compared to females. CONCLUSION: These findings showed that palatal width increased from primary to permanent stage. Palatal height and palatal height index decrease from primary to mixed dentation, then increase from mixed to permanent dentition.

BACKGROUND: This study sought to assess and compare coronal discoloration following the application of white mineral trioxide aggregate, Biodentine, and calcium-enriched mixture cement in endodontically treated teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this in vitro experimental study, 64 freshly extracted sound human premolars were selected, cleaned, and stored in saline. After cleaning, shaping, and obturation the root canal of the teeth, the teeth were randomly assigned to one control (n = 4) and three experimental (n = 20) groups. In the experimental groups, the cement were applied over the canal orifices in 3-mm thickness. All teeth were then restored with composite resin. Color parameters, according to the CIE L*a*b* system, were measured using Vita Easyshade spectrophotometer before application of cement and at 1 week, 1 month, 2 months, and 3 months after the application of cement. The recorded values were statistically analyzed using descriptive and analytical statistics. For analytical statistics, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was applied to assess normal distribution of data. ANOVA was used to compare the results at baseline and repeated measures. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Significant differences were noted in color change (ΔE) between all time points except between ΔE4 (2 months) and ΔE5 (3 months) (P < 0.01). However, tooth discoloration caused by the three cement was not significantly different (P = 0.343). CONCLUSION: The three tested cement were not significantly different in terms of causing coronal discoloration in endodontically treated teeth.
