RESUMO

Permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) have been an area of interest for in-situ remediation of groundwater. However, the corrosion of iron used in PRBs has been an area of concern. This study was aimed to enhance the long term performance for reduction of Cr (VI) by high carbon iron filings (HCIF) co-assisted with Serratia sp. Cr (VI) reduction by HCIF alone followed pseudo-first order kinetics and the reaction rate was 0.382 h-1 for 50 mg/L of Cr (VI) which declined to 0.0017 mg-1 L h-1 in combined system. But in cyclic studies, the reduction of Cr (VI) with HCIF alone system declined to 70% after 2 cycles whereas more than 90% reduction was observed in combined system up to four cycles. The corrosion potential and XRD data supported that Serratia sp. have positive effect on longevity of HCIF for Cr (VI) reduction.

RESUMO

Recently, the rampant administration of antibiotics and their synthetic organic constitutes have exacerbated adverse effects on ecosystems, affecting the health of animals, plants, and humans by promoting the emergence of extreme multidrug-resistant bacteria (XDR), antibiotic resistance bacterial variants (ARB), and genes (ARGs). The constraints, such as high costs, by-product formation, etc., associated with the physico-chemical treatment process limit their efficacy in achieving efficient wastewater remediation. Biodegradation is a cost-effective, energy-saving, sustainable alternative for removing emerging organic pollutants from environmental matrices. In view of the same, the current study aims to explore the biodegradation of ciprofloxacin using microbial consortia via metabolic pathways. The optimal parameters for biodegradation were assessed by employing machine learning tools, viz. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and statistical optimization tool (Response Surface Methodology, RSM) using the Box-Behnken design (BBD). Under optimal culture conditions, the designed bacterial consortia degraded ciprofloxacin with 95.5% efficiency, aligning with model prediction results, i.e., 95.20% (RSM) and 94.53% (ANN), respectively. Thus, befitting amendments to the biodegradation process can augment efficiency and lead to a greener solution for antibiotic degradation from aqueous media.

RESUMO

Risperidone is a second-generation antipsychotic agent used in psychiatric management, acutely and chronically. A rare adverse effect has been described with its use in the form of orthostatic hypotension especially in pharmaceutical clinical trials. However, there remains a lack of literature on the replication or prevalence of this adverse effect among patients in clinical settings. Hence, we present an incidental case of orthostatic hypotension following Risperidone therapy.

RESUMO

The first case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was reported in Wuhan China on December 31, 2019. COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic on March 11, 2020. To reduce the spread of this virus, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommended self and mandatory quarantine of exposed individuals and self-isolation. However, the psychological impact of this pandemic includes new onset or worsening of existing mental illnesses which include but are not limited to anxiety, depression from social isolation, eating disorders, and uptake in suicidality either in isolation or part of mental illness symptomatology. In the USA, suicide is the second leading cause of death among people aged 10 - 34 years while globally, it is the second cause of death among people aged 15 - 29 years. The authors present a case of two young women of minority population with no prior psychiatric illnesses who presented to the psychiatry emergency room with suicidal attempts due to COVID-19 pandemic-related psychosocial stressors.

RESUMO

Enhancement of nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) stability and transport in the subsurface environment is important for in situ degradation of contaminants. Various biodegradable dispersants (poly (acrylic acid) (PAA), Tween 20 and Reetha Extracts) have been tested to evaluate their effectiveness in this regard. Application of dispersants during the synthesis of nZVI have positively affected the reduction in particle size. The transport capacity in terms of fraction elution at different pore water velocities and collector grain size (filter media) was analyzed using correlation equation for the filtration model by Rajagopalan and Tien (RT model). At a surfactant concentration of 5% for PAA, Tween 20 and Reetha (Sapindus trifoliata) extracts, the lowest particle size and the highest zeta potential achieved are 8.67 nm and -55.29 mV, 75.24 nm and -62.68 mV, 61.6 nm and -37.82 mV, respectively. The trend of colloidal stability by The Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) Theory model for PAA and Reetha applied concentration was 3% > 4% > 5% > 2% > 1% > 0%. For Tween 20, modified nZVI particle shows a higher repulsive force with increasing Tween 20 concentration. Results indicated that some mechanisms such as aggregation, ripening and surface modification with different carrier pore water velocities had a considerable impact on nZVI retention in porous media. The results indicate that natural surfactant like Reetha extracts exhibits an alternative potential capacity for nZVI modification in comparison with synthetic surfactants (PAA and Tween 20).
