RESUMO

Probiotics play a critical role in the control of host intestinal microbial balance, protecting the host from gastrointestinal pathogens, modulating the host immune response, and decreasing host susceptibility to infection. To understand the mechanism underlying the protective effect of probiotics against infections through immune regulation, we examined protection against Salmonella enterica infection following exposure to nonpathogenic Enterococcus faecium in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. We found that the transcription factor HLH-26, a REF-1 family member of basic helix-loop-helix transcription factors, was required in the intestine for E. faecium-mediated protection of C. elegans against a lethal S. enterica infection. In addition, we uncovered that defense response genes controlled by the canonical Wnt/BAR-1 pathway were activated upon exposure to E. faecium in an HLH-26-dependent manner. Our findings highlight a role for REF-1/HLH-26 in the control of the Wnt/BAR-1 pathway in probiotic-mediated protection against gut infection.

The gut-neural axis plays a critical role in the control of several physiological processes, including the communication of signals from the microbiome to the nervous system, which affects learning, memory, and behavior. However, the pathways involved in gut-neural signaling of gut-governed behaviors remain unclear. We found that the intestinal distension caused by the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa induces histone H4 Lys8 acetylation (H4K8ac) in the germline of Caenorhabditis elegans, which is required for both a bacterial aversion behavior and its transmission to the next generation. We show that induction of H4K8ac in the germline is essential for bacterial aversion and that a 14-3-3 chaperone protein family member, PAR-5, is required for H4K8ac. Our findings highlight a role for H4K8ac in the germline not only in the intergenerational transmission of pathogen avoidance but also in the transmission of pathogenic cues that travel through the gut-neural axis to control the aversive behavior.

Genome evolution is an essential and stringently regulated aspect of biological fitness. For bacteria, natural competence is one of the principal mechanisms of genome evolution and is frequently subject to multiple layers of regulation derived from a plethora of environmental and physiological stimuli. Here, we present a regulatory mechanism that illustrates how such disparate stimuli can be integrated into the Streptococcus mutans natural competence phenotype. S. mutans possesses an intriguing, but poorly understood ability to coordinately control its independently regulated natural competence and bacteriocin genetic pathways as a means to acquire DNA released from closely related, bacteriocin-susceptible streptococci. Our results reveal how the bacteriocin-specific transcription activator BrsR directly mediates this coordination by serving as an anti-adaptor protein responsible for antagonizing the proteolysis of the inherently unstable, natural competence-specific alternative sigma factor ComX. This BrsR ability functions entirely independent of its transcription regulator function and directly modulates the timing and severity of the natural competence phenotype. Additionally, many of the DNA uptake proteins produced by the competence system were surprisingly found to possess adaptor abilities, which are employed to terminate the BrsR regulatory circuit via negative feedback. BrsR-competence protein heteromeric complexes directly inhibit nascent brsR transcription as well as stimulate the Clp-dependent proteolysis of extant BrsR proteins. This study illustrates how critical genetic regulatory abilities can evolve in a potentially limitless variety of proteins without disrupting their conserved ancestral functions. These unrecognized regulatory abilities are likely fundamental for transducing information through complex genetic networks.

Microbial infections have been linked to the onset and severity of neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, but the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. Here, we used a genetic screen for genes involved in protection from infection-associated neurodegeneration and identified the gene mtm-10. We then validated the role of the encoded myotubularin-related protein, MTM-10, in protecting the dendrites of Caenorhabditis elegans from degeneration mediated by oxidative stress or Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection. Further experiments indicated that mtm-10 is expressed in the AWC neurons of C. elegans, where it functions in a cell-autonomous manner to protect the dendrite degeneration caused by pathogen infection. We also confirm that the changes observed in the dendrites of the animals were not because of premature death or overall sickness. Finally, our studies indicated that mtm-10 functions in AWC neurons to preserve chemosensation after pathogen infection. These results reveal an essential role for myotubularin-related protein 10 in the protection of dendrite morphology and function against the deleterious effects of oxidative stress or infection.

Core needle biopsy of breast masses is a common procedure for tissue diagnosis of breast lesions. The incidence of complications is low, with pseudoaneurysm (PA) after core biopsy has been described in the literature, and the subsequent need for surgical management. Ultrasonography is the most common modality used for not only diagnosis but also treatment of a PA. Color Doppler images show a heterogeneous echoic lesion with whirling flow inside of the lesion. We describe a patient whose breast PA that developed after core needle biopsy was successfully treated with sonographically-guided intravascular glue embolization.

Circular polarized luminescence (CPL)-active materials attract great attentions owing to their widely applications in 3D optical displays and encrypted transmission. Inspired by the strategies adopted in perovskite based CPL materials, herein, CPL-active hybrids (D)- and (L)-(tert-butyl prolinate)MnCl3 were successfully prepared by assembling chiral D/L tert-butyl prolinate with manganese (II) chloride. Single crystal structures show the as-formed hybrids possess one-dimensional (1D) structure containing linear chains of face-sharing MnCl6 octahedral surrounded by prolinate cations. The 1D Mn(II) hybrids display strong red emission peaked at 646 nm with PLQY of 67.1 % and 57.2 % for d-type and l-type, respectively, representing the highest PLQY for 1D MnII hybrids. Interestingly, the 1D Mn(II) hybrids exhibit prominent circular dichroism (CD) signals and remarkable CPL activity with the dissymmetry factor g of 6.1*10-3 and -6.3*10-3 from 550 to 800 nm for (D)- and (L)-(tert-butyl prolinate)MnCl3 , respectively, owing to the existence of chiral cations. It is worthy noted the obtained g represents the highest value for non-lead organic-inorganic hybrids.

As low-dimensional lead-free hybrids with higher stability and lower toxicity than those of three-dimensional lead perovskites, organic antimony(III) halides show great application potential in opt-electronic field owing to diverse topologies along with exceptional optical properties. We report herein an antimony(III) hybrid (MePPh3 )2 SbCl5 with a zero-dimensional (0D) structure, which exhibits brilliant orange emission peaked at 593 nm with near-unity photoluminescent quantum yield (99.4 %). The characterization of photophysical properties demonstrates that the broadband emission with a microsecond lifetime (3.24 µs) arises from self-trapped emission (STE). Electrically driven organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on neat and doped films of (MePPh3 )2 SbCl5 were fabricated. The doped devices show significant improvement in comparison to non-doped OLEDs. Owing to the much improved surface morphology and balanced carrier transport in light-emitting layers of doped devices, the peak luminance, current efficiency (CE) and external quantum efficiency (EQE) are boosted from 82 cd m-2 to 3500 cd m-2 , 1.1 cd A-1 to 6.8 cd A-1 , and 0.7 % to 3.1 % relative to non-doped devices, respectively.

Background: The purpose of this study was to compare the performance between noncontrast-enhanced computed tomography (NECT) plus abdominal ultrasound (US) (NECT + US) with contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) for the detection of hepatic metastasis in breast cancer patient with postsurgical follow-up. Methods: A total of 1470 patients without already diagnosed hepatic metastasis were included. All patients underwent US and multiphase CECT including the NECT. Independent reviewers analyzed images obtained in four settings, namely, abdominal US, NECT, NECT + US, and CECT and recorded liver metastases using a 5-grade scale of diagnostic confidence. Sensitivity, specificity (diagnostic performance), and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC, diagnostic confidence) were calculated. Interoperator agreement was calculated using the kappa test. Results: Reference standards revealed no metastases in 1108/1470 patients, and metastasis was detected in 362/1470 patients. Abdominal US (P < 0.01) and NECT (P = 0.01) significantly differed from CECT, but NECT + US did not significantly differ from CECT in terms of sensitivity (P = 0.09), specificity (P = 0.5), and AUC (P = 0.43). After an additional review of abdominal US, readers changed the diagnostic confidence scores of 106 metastatic lesions diagnosed using NECT. Interobserver agreements were good or very good in all four settings. Additional review of abdominal US with NECT allowed a change in the therapeutic plan of 108 patients. Conclusion: Abdominal US + NECT showed better diagnostic performance for the detection of hepatic metastases than did NECT alone; its diagnostic performance and confidence were similar to those of CECT.

The PhoP-PhoQ two-component regulation system of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium is involved in the response to various environmental stresses and is essential for bacterial virulence. Our previous studies showed that acetylation plays an important role in regulating the activity of PhoP, which consequently mediates the change in virulence of S Typhimurium. Here, we demonstrate that a conserved lysine residue, K88, is crucial for the function of PhoP and its acetylation-downregulated PhoP activities. K88 could be specifically acetylated by acetyl phosphate (AcP), and the acetylation level of K88 decreased significantly after phagocytosis of S Typhimurium by macrophages. Acetylation of K88 inhibited PhoP dimerization and DNA-binding abilities. In addition, mutation of K88 to glutamine, mimicking the acetylated form, dramatically attenuated intestinal inflammation and systemic infection of S Typhimurium in the mouse model. These findings indicate that nonenzymatic acetylation of PhoP by AcP is a fine-tuned mechanism for the virulence of S Typhimurium and highlights that virulence and metabolism in the host are closely linked.

BACKGROUND: Dyslipidemia contributes to the development and progression of arterial stiffness. We aimed to identify the most informative measures of serum lipids and their calculated ratios in terms of arterial stiffness progression risk. METHODS: Total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) of 659 healthy males (47.4 ± 10.7 years) were measured at baseline. Values for non-HDL-C, TC/HDL-C, TG/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C, and non-HDL-C/HDL-C were calculated. BaPWV was re-performed after 4.1 years follow-up. Elevated baPWV was defined as baPWV ≥ 1400 cm/s. RESULTS: Over the follow-up period, the mean baPWV value increased from 1340 cm/s to 1410 cm/s, and 331 individuals increased/persisted with high baPWV (outcome 1). Among the 448 subjects who had normal baseline baPWV, 100 incident elevated baPWV occurred (outcome 2). Only baseline logTG (OR 1.64 [95% CI: 1.14-2.37] for outcome 1; 1.89 [1.14-3.17] for outcome 2) and logTG/HDL-C (1.54 [1.15-2.10] for outcome 1; 1.60 [1.05-2.45] for outcome 2) were significantly associated with arterial stiffness progression after adjusting for confounding factors. Adding logTG or logTG/HDL-C to age and blood pressure improved the accuracy of risk predictions for arterial stiffness progression. These associations remained significant when lipids were analyzed as categorical variables. CONCLUSIONS: Baseline serum TG and TG/HDL-C were independently associated with increases in/persistently high baPWV and incident elevated baPWV, and they performed more effectively than other lipid variables in identifying healthy men at high risk of arterial stiffness progression.

BACKGROUND: Molecular testing for oncogenic mutations in fine-needle aspiration has showed high predictive value in identifying malignant lesions from thyroid nodules with indeterminate cytology. METHODS: To figure out an efficient and economical gene panel for most medical institutions in China, we designed a five-gene panel including BRAF/NRAS/KRAS/HRAS/TERT genes and conducted a retrospective study to evaluate the role of this five-gene diagnostic panel in differential diagnosis of thyroid nodules. RESULTS: A total of 665 patients with 695 thyroid nodules were investigated in the current study. The fine-needle aspiration biopsy and surgically separated thyroid tissue specimens were harvested to test BRAF, TERT, NRAS, KRAS, and HRAS mutations. We identified 261 mutations in 665 patients, including 177 V600E mutations in BRAF. Three hundred and sixty-nine patients who underwent thyroid surgery after completion of the initial clinical and cytological evaluation were enrolled in the final analysis. The diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of the combination of FNAB cytology and five-gene detection were 74.7%, 93.8%, and 84.8%, respectively. BRAF V600E and five-gene panel could recognize 46.4% and 53.6% of papillary thyroid carcinoma in the patients with cytologically indeterminate nodules. CONCLUSION: The five-gene panel can effectively improve the sensitivity, negative predictive value, and accuracy of fine-needle aspiration biopsy cytology, especially in the patients with cytologically indeterminate nodules.

BACKGROUND: A number of studies have explored the association between depression and ghrelin, leptin, and cortisol; further, postprandial C-peptide levels have a therapeutic effect on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, the relationship between C-peptide and depression in patients with diabetes, remains unclear. The aim of this study was to explore the association between depression and ghrelin, leptin, cortisol, and C-peptide in patients with diabetes. METHODS: We enrolled 50 adults without T2DM, 77 non-depressed adults with T2DM (free of Axis-I psychiatric disorders as assessed using the Mental Illness Needs Index (MINI), Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9 score ≤ 4)) and 59 patients with T2DM and depression (PHQ-9 ≥ 7 and positive by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5). The age range of the participants was 45-59 years of age. We compared the above three groups and explored the association between ghrelin, leptin, cortisol, C-peptide, and depression in patients with diabetes. A post-hoc power-analysis was finished. RESULTS: Compared with the non-depression T2DM group, the depression T2DM group had significantly higher blood glucose fluctuations. Further, compared with the non-depression T2DM and non-diabetic groups, the depression T2DM group had significantly lower levels of post-meal 2-h C-peptide and elevated evening cortisol (p < 0.01). Regression analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between depression severity and 2-h postprandial C-peptide in patients with diabetes (p < 0.01) and a significant positive correlation with midnight cortisol levels (p < 0.01). A post hoc power analysis showed that we had an adequate sample size and met the minimum requirement to attain 80% power. A post hoc power calculation also demonstrated that this study basically achieved power of 80% at 5% alpha level. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate a correlation of low fasting levels of 2-h C-peptide as well as higher midnight cortisol levels with higher depression severity in middle-aged patients with T2DM.

BACKGROUND Vascular aging is characterized by increasing arterial stiffness as measured by pulse wave velocity. The present study evaluated the factors influencing vascular aging in Chinese healthy older subjects. MATERIAL AND METHODS Disease- and treatment-free aged (≥60 years) participants were recruited from 2014 to 2019. Cardiometabolic risk factors and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) were assessed. We defined healthy vascular aging (HVA) as the lowest 10% and early vascular aging (EVA) as the highest 10% of the baPWV distribution, after adjustment for age and blood pressure (BP). We fitted linear and logistic regression models to assess the determinants. RESULTS In all, 794 subjects (mean age 66.5±6.8 years, 71.0% male) were recruited; the 10th and 90th percentiles of baPWV were 1278 cm/s and 1955 cm/s, respectively. Age, BP, heart rate, and triglycerides were all positively associated with baPWV, whereas male subjects and body mass index (BMI) were negatively associated with baPWV. The number of participants diagnosed with either HVA or EVA was 80. Logistic regression models showed that sex, BMI, heart rate, and triglycerides were associated with HVA and EVA after adjustment for age, BP, and other confounding factors. CONCLUSIONS Male, high BMI, low heart rate, and low triglycerides are protective factors for vascular aging in the healthy aged population. Management of BMI, heart rate, triglycerides in a reasonable range may help to alleviate the vascular aging process.

BACKGROUND: Korea is no longer safe from the risk of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL); the first reported case was a Korean woman in her 40s who had a 7-year-history of receiving an implant-based augmentation mammaplasty using a textured implant. We conducted this study to discuss the emerging crisis of stakeholders in implant-based augmentation mammaplasty and to propose a multi-disciplinary approach to early detection of its complications. METHODS: We analyzed medical examination data that was collected from patients who visited us between August 12 and September 27, 2019. We evaluated a total of 114 women (n = 114) in the current study. They were evaluated for whether they were in healthy condition. Moreover, their baseline characteristics were also examined; these included age, gender, height (cm), weight (kg), duration since surgery (years), possession of a breast implant card, the site of surgical incision, side of symptoms and reasons for outpatient visit. Furthermore, the patients were also evaluated for their subjective awareness of the manufacturer, surface and shape of the breast implant. Potential complications include malrotation, folding, seroma, capsule thickening, upside-down rotation, rupture, capsule mass and breast mass. RESULTS: A majority of the patients had a past history of receiving textured implants. The corresponding percentage was 78.95% (90/114) and 85.09% (97/114) based on their subjective awareness of a breast implant and sonographic findings, respectively. That is, it was slightly increased with the use of a breast ultrasound. CONCLUSION: Here, we propose the following approaches. First, patient data should be prospectively collected. By tracking outcomes and complications of an implant-based augmentation mammaplasty, both high-quality care and patient safety can be ensured. Second, stakeholders in implant-based augmentation mammaplasty should collaborate with customers and regulatory authorities. Third, surgeons should consider applying imaging modalities for early detection of postoperative complications.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of radiofrequency (RF) ablation for nonfunctioning benign thyroid nodules in children and adolescents. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fourteen pediatric patients (10 female, 4 male; mean age 15.7 ± 2.3 years, range 12-19 years) with nonfunctioning benign thyroid nodules (mean longest diameter 3.7 ± 1.1 cm, range 2.0-5.6 cm) treated with the use of RF ablation from 2005 to 2015 were evaluated. The inclusion criteria for RF ablation therapy were (i) age <20 years, (ii) benign cytological confirmation by ≥2 separate fine-needle aspiration or core needle biopsies, (iii) pressure symptoms or cosmetic problems caused by thyroid nodules, (iv) absence of any suspicious feature as determined with the use of ultrasound (US), (v) normal serum levels of thyroid hormone and thyrotropin, and (vi) follow-up of >6 months. RF ablation was performed with the use of an RF generator and an 18-gauge internally cooled electrode. RF ablation was performed under local anesthesia without conscious sedation or general anesthesia. Changes in nodules on follow-up US, changes in symptomatic and cosmetic scores, and complications arising during or after RF ablation were evaluated. RESULTS: Mean follow-up period was 36.9 ± 21.7 months (range 6-69 months). At last follow-up visits, mean longest nodule diameter and volume had decreased significantly (3.7 ± 1.1 cm vs 1.4 ± 0.9 cm and 14.6 ± 13.3 mL vs 1.7 ± 4.4 mL; P < 0.001). Both cosmetic and compressive symptoms significantly improved (3.8 ± 0.6 vs 1.4 ± 0.6 and 3.4 ± 1.0 vs 0.1 ± 0.4; P < 0.001). The mean number of ablation sessions was 2.1 ± 1.2 (range 1-5 sessions) and no major complication was encountered during or after RF ablation. CONCLUSIONS: RF ablation might be a safe and effective treatment modality for nonfunctioning benign thyroid nodules in children and adolescents.

The two-component system PhoP-PhoQ is highly conserved in bacteria and regulates virulence in response to various signals for bacteria within the mammalian host. Here, we demonstrate that PhoP could be acetylated by Pat and deacetylated by deacetylase CobB enzymatically in vitro and in vivo in Salmonella Typhimurium. Specifically, the conserved lysine residue 201(K201) in winged helix-turn-helix motif at C-terminal DNA-binding domain of PhoP could be acetylated, and its acetylation level decreases dramatically when bacteria encounter low magnesium, acid stress or phagocytosis of macrophages. PhoP has a decreased acetylation and increased DNA-binding ability in the deletion mutant of pat. However, acetylation of K201 does not counteract PhoP phosphorylation, which is essential for PhoP activity. In addition, acetylation of K201 (mimicked by glutamine substitute) in S. Typhimurium causes significantly attenuated intestinal inflammation as well as systemic infection in mouse model, suggesting that deacetylation of PhoP K201 is essential for Salmonella pathogenesis. Therefore, we propose that the reversible acetylation of PhoP K201 may ensure Salmonella promptly respond to different stresses in host cells. These findings suggest that reversible lysine acetylation in the DNA-binding domain, as a novel regulatory mechanism of gene expression, is involved in bacterial virulence across microorganisms.

This study compared the efficacy and safety of high-dose dexamethasone (HD-DXM) and conventional prednisone (PDN) on the largest cohort to date as first-line strategies for newly diagnosed adult primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). Patients enrolled were randomized to receive DXM 40 mg/d for 4 days (n = 95, nonresponders received an additional 4-day course of DXM) or prednisone 1.0 mg/kg daily for 4 weeks and then tapered (n = 97). One or 2 courses of HD-DXM resulted in a higher incidence of overall initial response (82.1% vs 67.4%, P = .044) and complete response (50.5% vs 26.8%, P = .001) compared with prednisone. Time to response was shorter in the HD-DXM arm (P < .001), and a baseline bleeding score ≥8 was associated with a decreased likelihood of initial response. Sustained response was achieved by 40.0% of patients in the HD-DXM arm and 41.2% in the PDN arm (P = .884). Initial complete response was a positive indicator of sustained response, whereas presence of antiplatelet autoantibodies was a negative indicator. HD-DXM was generally tolerated better. We concluded that HD-DXM could be a preferred corticosteroid strategy for first-line management of adult primary ITP. This study is registered at www.clinicaltrials.gov as #NCT01356511.

Background There may be discordance between tumor size determined by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and that observed during pathologic analyses. Purpose To evaluate MRI-pathology concordance of tumor size in patients with invasive breast carcinoma. Material and Methods Data from 307 invasive breast carcinomas were analyzed retrospectively. Preoperative breast MRI was reviewed for size, lesion type, morphology, and dynamic contrast-enhanced tumor kinetics. MRI tumor size was compared with tumor size measurements from the pathologic analysis. Concordance was defined as a difference in diameter of ≤ 0.5 cm. MRI-pathology concordance was compared according to clinical and histopathologic features. Results The mean tumor size on MRI was 2.48 ± 1.41 cm. Tumor measurements determined by MRI were not significantly different from those recorded in the pathologic reports (2.56 ± 1.61 cm, P = 0.199). MRI-pathology concordance was found in 229/307 (74.6%) cases; the size was overestimated in 36 (11.7%) tumors and underestimated in 42 (13.7%). On univariate analysis, MRI-pathology discordance was associated with larger tumor size ( P < 0.001), estrogen receptor (ER) negativity ( P = 0.006), and lymphovascular invasion ( P = 0.003). Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 positive molecular subtype showed worse correlation between the tumor size measured by MRI and pathology compared with luminal A and luminal B subtypes ( P = 0.008 and 0.007). On multivariate analysis, tumor size and ER status significantly influenced MRI-pathology concordance ( P < 0.05). Conclusion ER negativity and larger tumor size were strongly associated with MRI-pathology discordance in invasive breast carcinomas. Awareness of these factors might improve surgical planning.

HilD, a dominant regulator of Salmonella pathogenicity island 1, can be acetylated by protein acetyltransferase (Pat) in Salmonella Typhimurium, and the acetylation is beneficial to its stability. However, the underlying mechanism of HilD stability regulated by acetylation is not clear. We show here that lysine 297 (K297) located in the helix-turn-helix motif, can be acetylated by Pat. Acetylation of K297 increases HilD stability, but reduces its DNA-binding affinity. In turn, the deacetylated K297 enhances the DNA-binding ability but decreases HilD stability. Under the Salmonella pathogenicity island 1-inducing condition, the acetylation level of K297 is down-regulated. The acetylated K297 (mimicked by glutamine substitution) causes attenuated invasion in HeLa cells, as well as impaired virulence in mouse model, compared with the deacetylated K297 (mimicked by arginine substitution), suggesting that deacetylation of K297 is essential for Salmonella virulence. These findings demonstrate that the acetylation of K297 can regulate both protein stability and DNA-binding ability. This regulation mediated by acetylation not only degrades redundant HilD to keep a moderate protein level to facilitate S. Typhimurium growth but also maintains an appropriate DNA-binding activity of HilD to ensure bacterial pathogenicity.

OBJECTIVE: To study the risk factors for elevated serum total bile acid (TBA) in preterm infants. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed for the clinical data of 216 preterm infants who were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. According to the presence or absence of elevated TBA (TBA >24.8 µmol/L), the preterm infants were divided into elevated TBA group with 53 infants and non-elevated TBA group with 163 infants. A univariate analysis and an unconditional multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to investigate the risk factors for elevated TBA. RESULTS: The univariate analysis showed that there were significant differences between the elevated TBA group and the non-elevated TBA group in gestational age at birth, birth weight, proportion of small-for-gestational-age infants, proportion of infants undergoing ventilator-assisted ventilation, fasting time, parenteral nutrition time, and incidence of neonatal respiratory failure and sepsis (P<0.05). The unconditional multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that low birth weight (OR=3.84, 95%CI: 1.53-9.64) and neonatal sepsis (OR=2.56, 95%CI: 1.01-6.47) were independent risk factors for elevated TBA in preterm infants. CONCLUSIONS: Low birth weight and neonatal sepsis may lead to elevated TBA in preterm infants.
