Genomic DNA methylation patterns play a crucial role in the developmental processes of plants and mammals. In this study, we aimed to investigate the significant effects of epigenetic mechanisms on the development of soybean seedlings and metabolic pathways. Our analyses show that 5-azaC-treatment affects radicle development from two Days After Imbibition (DAI), as well as both shoot and root development. We examined the expression levels of key genes related to DNA methylation and demethylation pathways, such as DRM2, which encodes RNA-directed DNA Methylation (RdDM) pathway, SAM synthase, responsible for methyl group donation, and ROS1, a DNA demethylase. In treated seedling roots, we observed an increase in DRM2 expression and a decrease in ROS1 expression. Additionally, 5-azaC treatment altered protein accumulation, indicating epigenetic control over stress response while inhibiting nitrogen assimilation, urea cycle, and glycolysis-related proteins. Furthermore, it influenced the levels of various phytohormones and metabolites crucial for seedling growth, such as ABA, IAA, ethylene, polyamines (PUT and Cad), and free amino acids, suggesting that epigenetic changes may shape soybean responses to pathogens, abiotic stress, and nutrient absorption. Our results assist in understanding how hypomethylation shapes soybean responses to pathogens, abiotic stress, and nutrient absorption crucial for seedling growth, suggesting that the plant's assimilation of carbon and nitrogen, along with hormone pathways, may be influenced by epigenetic changes.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the epigenetic reprogramming of ICR1 (KvDMR1) and ICR2 (H19DMR) and expression of genes controlled by them as well as those involved in methylation, demethylation, and pluripotency. METHODS: We collected germinal vesicle (GV) and metaphase II (MII) oocytes, and preimplantation embryos at five stages [zygote, 4-8 cells, 8-16 cells, morula, and expanded blastocysts (ExB)]. DNA methylation was assessed by BiSeq, and the gene expression was evaluated using qPCR. RESULTS: H19DMR showed an increased DNA methylation from GV to MII oocytes (68.04% and 98.05%, respectively), decreasing in zygotes (85.83%) until morula (61.65%), and ExB (63.63%). H19 and IGF2 showed increased expression in zygotes, which decreased in further stages. KvDMR1 was hypermethylated in both GV (71.82%) and MII (69.43%) and in zygotes (73.70%) up to morula (77.84%), with a loss of methylation at the ExB (36.64%). The zygote had higher expression of most genes, except for CDKN1C and PHLDA2, which were highly expressed in MII and GV oocytes, respectively. DNMTs showed increased expression in oocytes, followed by a reduction in the earliest stages of embryo development. TET1 was downregulated until 4-8-cell and upregulated in 8-16-cell embryos. TET2 and TET3 showed higher expression in oocytes, and a downregulation in MII oocytes and 4-8-cell embryo. CONCLUSION: We highlighted the heterogeneity in the DNA methylation of H19DMR and KvDMR1 and a dynamic expression pattern of genes controlled by them. The expression of DNMTs and TETs genes was also dynamic owing to epigenetic reprogramming.

For more than three decades, major efforts in sampling and analyzing tree diversity in South America have focused almost exclusively on trees with stems of at least 10 and 2.5 cm diameter, showing highest species diversity in the wetter western and northern Amazon forests. By contrast, little attention has been paid to patterns and drivers of diversity in the largest canopy and emergent trees, which is surprising given these have dominant ecological functions. Here, we use a machine learning approach to quantify the importance of environmental factors and apply it to generate spatial predictions of the species diversity of all trees (dbh ≥ 10 cm) and for very large trees (dbh ≥ 70 cm) using data from 243 forest plots (108,450 trees and 2832 species) distributed across different forest types and biogeographic regions of the Brazilian Amazon. The diversity of large trees and of all trees was significantly associated with three environmental factors, but in contrasting ways across regions and forest types. Environmental variables associated with disturbances, for example, the lightning flash rate and wind speed, as well as the fraction of photosynthetically active radiation, tend to govern the diversity of large trees. Upland rainforests in the Guiana Shield and Roraima regions had a high diversity of large trees. By contrast, variables associated with resources tend to govern tree diversity in general. Places such as the province of Imeri and the northern portion of the province of Madeira stand out for their high diversity of species in general. Climatic and topographic stability and functional adaptation mechanisms promote ideal conditions for species diversity. Finally, we mapped general patterns of tree species diversity in the Brazilian Amazon, which differ substantially depending on size class.

Recent decades have seen a rapid acceleration in global participation in formal education, due to worldwide initiatives aimed to provide school access to all children. Research in high income countries has shown that school quality indicators have a significant, positive impact on numeracy and literacy-skills required to participate in the increasingly globalized economy. Schools vary enormously in kind, resources, and teacher training around the world, however, and the validity of using diverse school quality measures in populations with diverse educational profiles remains unclear. First, we assessed whether children's numeracy and literacy performance across populations improves with age, as evidence of general school-related learning effects. Next, we examined whether several school quality measures related to classroom experience and composition, and to educational resources, were correlated with one another. Finally, we examined whether they were associated with children's (4-12-year-olds, N = 889) numeracy and literacy performance in 10 culturally and geographically diverse populations which vary in historical engagement with formal schooling. Across populations, age was a strong positive predictor of academic achievement. Measures related to classroom experience and composition were correlated with one another, as were measures of access to educational resources and classroom experience and composition. The number of teachers per class and access to writing materials were key predictors of numeracy and literacy, while the number of students per classroom, often linked to academic achievement, was not. We discuss these results in the context of maximising children's learning environments and highlight study limitations to motivate future research. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: We examined the extent to which four measures of school quality were associated with one another, and whether they predicted children's academic achievement in 10 culturally and geographically diverse societies. Across populations, measures related to classroom experience and composition were correlated with one another as were measures of access to educational resources to classroom experience and composition. Age, the number of teachers per class, and access to writing materials were key predictors of academic achievement across populations. Our data have implications for designing efficacious educational initiatives to improve school quality globally.

RESUMO

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are one of the most abundant and heterogeneous transcripts with key roles in chromatin remodeling and gene regulation at the transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels. Due to their role in cell growth and differentiation, lncRNAs have emerged as an important biomarker in cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and targeted treatment. Recent studies have focused on elucidating lncRNA function during malignant transformation, tumor progression and drug resistance. The advent of the CRISPR system has made it possible to precisely edit complex genomic loci such as lncRNAs. Thus, we summarized the advances in CRISPR-Cas approaches for functional studies of lncRNAs including gene knockout, knockdown, overexpression and RNA targeting in tumorigenesis and drug resistance. Additionally, we highlighted the perspectives and potential applications of CRISPR approaches to treat cancer, as an emerging and promising target therapy.

Self-regulation is a widely studied construct, generally assumed to be cognitively supported by executive functions (EFs). There is a lack of clarity and consensus over the roles of specific components of EFs in self-regulation. The current study examines the relations between performance on (a) a self-regulation task (Heads, Toes, Knees Shoulders Task) and (b) two EF tasks (Knox Cube and Beads Tasks) that measure different components of updating: working memory and short-term memory, respectively. We compared 107 8- to 13-year-old children (64 females) across demographically-diverse populations in four low and middle-income countries, including: Tanna, Vanuatu; Keningau, Malaysia; Saltpond, Ghana; and Natal, Brazil. The communities we studied vary in market integration/urbanicity as well as level of access, structure, and quality of schooling. We found that performance on the visuospatial working memory task (Knox Cube) and the visuospatial short-term memory task (Beads) are each independently associated with performance on the self-regulation task, even when controlling for schooling and location effects. These effects were robust across demographically-diverse populations of children in low-and middle-income countries. We conclude that this study found evidence supporting visuospatial working memory and visuospatial short-term memory as distinct cognitive processes which each support the development of self-regulation.

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review on the masking ability of discolored substrates, analyzing the capacity and quality of the response produced by the different methodologies and techniques applied to overcome this clinical challenge. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. The electronic search was conducted in MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases, without date restriction. In vitro studies, written in English, applying different methodologies to evaluate masking ability were included. The variables of interest were: type, color and thickness of the restorative and/or cement material; use of pigments in the restorative material and/or cement; color of the substrate; and background color used for the evaluations. RESULTS: Database search retrieved 307 eligible papers with a final inclusion of 47 published papers. Approximately 98% of the studies used ΔE, 36% used TP, and only 6% used CR to evaluate the masking ability of restorative materials. CONCLUSIONS: The most appropriate methodology to evaluate the masking ability is using color difference equations (ΔE) associated with the perceptibility and acceptability thresholds. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: As different methodologies have been used to evaluate the masking ability of esthetic restorative materials on colored substrates, there is an urgent need to reach a consensus and propose a method, which is suggested by the present systematic review.

Euterpe oleracea (Açaí) fruit are widely consumed at the Brazilian Amazon region, and biological potentials such as immunomodulatory and antioxidant have been described for its extracts. However, its antimicrobial properties remain poorly investigated. Here, the antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities of the methanolic extract of an artisanally-manufactured açaí pulp (MEAP) were evaluated against clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus. Besides, MEAP interference on the activity of antimicrobial drugs of clinical relevance was explored, and its cytotoxicity against hepatocellular carcinoma cells (HepG2) was investigated. Biochemical and physicochemical properties of the pulp were investigated, and the presence of polyphenols on the extract was confirmed. For the first time, we report that the methanolic extract of açaí pulp is effective against planktonic cells and biofilms of S. aureus, and also decreased the proliferation of HepG2 cells. Statistically significant synergism was observed when the extract was combined to the tested antimicrobials except for erythromycin, and all biochemical and physicochemical parameters ranged within the accepted values established by the Brazilian legislation. Our data open doors for more studies on the antimicrobial activity of phytomolecules isolated from Euterpe oleracea extracts, and also for its combined use with antimicrobial drugs.

Textile industry needs to recover and reuse its wastewater as to fulfil the demand of increasingly strict regulations. The characterization of dyeing wastewater samples according to textile fiber and final textile effluent enables the application of different treatment methods. This study aims to characterize dyeing wastewater in black color of polyamide, polyester, and viscose fibers and final textile effluent. Samples were collected and characterized completely for major pollution indicator parameters. Dyeing wastewater of polyester showed higher values for some parameters, e.g., 4994.44% (49,944,400 mg L-1 and 917 NTU) of turbidity and 4100.00% of phenol when compared to dyeing wastewater of other fibers. Other parameters such as pH, alkalinity, color, phosphorus, nitrogen, sulfides, chlorides, oil and grease, dissolved solids, and chemical and biochemical oxygen demand were also assessed. In addition to individual characterization, this study also presents a correlation of the contribution of each parameter to the final textile effluent. Although dyeing wastewater of polyamide contributes the most in terms of quantity for the final effluent, this study revealed that dyeing wastewater of polyester influenced the most on the final composition of the textile wastewater when evaluating color, turbidity, total iron, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, phenol, mercury, oil and grease, and total phosphorus. The present study is focused on bringing new insights to provide future research with other strategies to improve the treatment of dyeing wastewater. In addition, some suggestions are also given for wastewater treatments according to type of textile fiber.

An increased function in the mesolimbic dopaminergic system has been extensively associated with the rewarding effects of both natural stimuli and drugs of abuse. Thus, dopamine receptor blockers, such as neuroleptic drugs, can be proposed as candidates for potential therapeutic approaches to treat drug dependence. Notwithstanding, this therapeutic potential of neuroleptics critically depends on a selective action on the specific mechanisms related to the development of addiction. We compared the effects of different doses of haloperidol, ziprasidone and aripiprazole (first-, second- and third-generation neuroleptics, respectively) on spontaneous locomotor activity of mice in a novel environment, hyperlocomotion induced by acute cocaine administration and cocaine-induced locomotor sensitization by a two-injection protocol. Whereas high doses of haloperidol abolished the three behavioural paradigms without selectivity, low doses of ziprasidone selectively abolished the development of the behavioural sensitization phenomenon. Finally, low doses of aripiprazole inhibited acute cocaine-induced hyperlocomotion and behavioural sensitization without modifying spontaneous locomotor activity. Thus, aripiprazole at lower doses was the most selective antipsychotic drug concerning the inhibition of the development of behavioural sensitization to cocaine. Because locomotor sensitization in rodents has been proposed to share plastic mechanisms with drug addiction in humans, our data provide relevant suggestions to the clinical practice.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate structural damage and loosening of abutments placed on narrow diameter implants after cyclic fatigue. METHODS: Sixty Morse taper narrow diameter implants (Neodent, Brazil) received two types of abutments (1PA- one-piece abutment or 2PA- two-piece abutment), which were randomly divided into 3 fatigue experiments (n = 10). The implants were placed into a customized supporting holder and a software-assisted digital torque wrench secured the manufacturer recommended torque for each abutment. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans were acquired, before and after fatigue, and post-processed (software e-Vol DX) to assess damage and abutment displacement. The boundary fatigue method was adapted to use 2 × 106 cycles, 2 Hz of frequency and constant peak load of 80 N (first experiment) that varied according to the failure rate of previous specimens (second and third experiments). Failure was evaluated using CBCT scans and removal torque values. Data were used to estimate long-term torque degradation, probability of failure and Weibull modulus (software ALTA PRO9). RESULTS: All 2PA specimens became loosen independently of the applied fatigue load, and structural bending was observed in 14 abutments. Eight 1PA got loosen during the fatigue experiment. The Weibull analysis showed a lower modulus (m = 1.0; 0.7, 1.4) for 1PA than for 2PA (m = 2.6; 2, 3.4) resulting in longer predicted lifetimes and slower torque degradation for 1PA than for 2PA specimens. SIGNIFICANCE: 1PA showed greater long-term survival probability than 2PA. Predicting the lifetime and mechanical behavior of implant-abutment systems are useful information to clinicians during the decision-making process of oral rehabilitations.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate torque maintenance and structural damage in implant components of different diameters subjected to a fatigue challenge. METHODS: Thirty 10-mm-long, morse taper connection, titanium dental implants and their corresponding one-piece abutments were divided into three groups (n = 10) according to implant diameter: 4.3 mm (I4.3), 3.5 mm (I3.5), and 2.9 mm (I2.9). The implants were placed into a load-bearing fixture simulating bone tissue (modified G10), and the abutments were screwed into the implants to a final torque of 20 Ncm for the I4.3 and I3.5 and 15 Ncm for I2.9. The torque was secured by a digital torque meter. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans were acquired and post-processed (e-Vol DX software) for all implant/abutment sets before and after subjecting them to fatigue in 37 °C distilled water (2 million cycles, constant load and frequency). The removal torque was measured using the same digital torque meter to calculate the difference in torque before and after fatigue. RESULTS: I2.9 showed substantial structural deformation compared with the other implant diameters (I3.5 and I4.3). However, the experimental groups did not show statistical differences for abutment loosening. SIGNIFICANCE: Implants smaller than 3.5 mm in diameter have a higher probability of structural deformation than standard-diameter implants. The association between tomographic scans and e-Vol DX software showed satisfactory consistency with the direct assessment using the digital torque meter, offering an additional tool to evaluate implant component loosening and structural deformations.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 30 % of cardiac surgeries are conducted on women by median sternotomy, which often causes discomfort such as pain, affects quality of life, and delayed recovery compared with men. Breast size is related to operative wound complications, such as incisional pain, sternum dehiscence, and infection, which may affect hospital costs due to prolonged hospital stays. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate breast size and operative wound complications and the effect of breast support on the incidence of pain, infection, and quality of life in women after coronary artery bypass grafting. METHOD: Women were randomly assigned to one of three groups: group A (surgical breast support), group B (ordinary breast support), and group C (no-support). Observations were taken daily between the second and seventh postoperative days and at 30, 60, and 180 days. Pain was assessed using the Short-Form 36 Health Survey (SF36) for quality of life and a verbal numerical scale. The authors used the nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis and Friedman tests to examine variance. The authors used the Pearson correlation coefficient or the Spearman correlation for correlations between variables. A multivariate study was conducted to evaluate the occurrence of infection, and the logistic regression model with "stepwise" variable selection was used. A linear regression model with the "stepwise" variable selection was also used for hospitalization. The authors used SPSS 17.0 software for Windows, with a significance level of p < 0.05. RESULTS: There was no difference in pain evaluation between the groups in 190 women (p > 0.05). When comparing quality of life, there was a statistically significant difference in the functional capacity domain at 30 and 60 days, with group A having the best functional capacity (p < 0.05). The larger the breast size, the longer the hospital stay (p < 0.001) and the higher the probability of infection (p = 0.032). Patients with a history of stroke had a 3.8 higher incidence of infection (p = 0.040). CONCLUSION: The use of surgical support did not affect acute pain or sternal infection rate in the 6-month follow-up. However, it was effective in the functional capacity domain 30 days after surgery and maintained at 60 days.

Penile squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a rare and aggressive tumour mainly related to lifestyle behaviour and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Environmentally induced loss of imprinting (LOI) at the H19 differentially methylated region (H19DMR) is associated with many cancers in the early events of tumorigenesis and may be involved in the pathogenesis of penile SCC. We sought to evaluate the DNA methylation pattern at H19DMR and its association with HPV infection in men with penile SCC by bisulfite sequencing (bis-seq). We observed an average methylation of 32.2% ± 11.6% at the H19DMR of penile SCC and did not observe an association between the p16INK4a+ (p = 0.59) and high-risk HPV+ (p = 0.338) markers with methylation level. The average methylation did not change according to HPV positive for p16INK4a+ or hrHPV+ (35.4% ± 10%) and negative for both markers (32.4% ± 10.1%) groups. As the region analysed has a binding site for the CTCF protein, the hypomethylation at the surrounding CpG sites might alter its insulator function. In addition, there was a positive correlation between intense polymorphonuclear cell infiltration and hypomethylation at H19DMR (p = 0.035). Here, we report that hypomethylation at H19DMR in penile SCC might contribute to tumour progression and aggressiveness regardless of HPV infection.

In eusocial insects, alarm signaling is used to inform nestmates about threats such as predators, competitors, and pathogens. Such behavior is important for the survival of colonies. However, studies evaluating the effect of insecticides on the alarm in termites have not yet been reported. Here, we inspected the effects of insecticide on alarm communication in Nasutitermes corniger. Specifically, we test the following hypotheses: (1) termite groups exposed to insecticide imidacloprid increase the body shaking movements, displaying an alert behavior; and (2) the alert behavior displayed after exposition to insecticide is dose dependent. Bioassays were conducted evaluating the body shaking movements and walking activity of termite groups exposed and non-exposed to insecticide. Thereafter, body shaking movements were evaluated in groups submitted to different doses of insecticide. In general, exposing termite groups to insecticide resulted in significantly higher body shaking movements compared to non-exposed groups. There was a positive effect of imidacloprid doses on the shaking movements. Walking activity, however, decreases in those groups exposed to the insecticide. Our results demonstrate the existence of 'insecticide alert behavior' in N. corniger and it appears to be a previously unrecognized communication mechanism in termites that allows for reducing the intoxication risks in the colony.

RESUMO

This article explores the progressive integration of -omics methods, including genomics, metabolomics, and proteomics, into sports research, highlighting the development of the concept of "sportomics." We discuss how sportomics can be used to comprehend the multilevel metabolism during exercise in real-life conditions faced by athletes, enabling potential personalized interventions to improve performance and recovery and reduce injuries, all with a minimally invasive approach and reduced time. Sportomics may also support highly personalized investigations, including the implementation of n-of-1 clinical trials and the curation of extensive datasets through long-term follow-up of athletes, enabling tailored interventions for athletes based on their unique physiological responses to different conditions. Beyond its immediate sport-related applications, we delve into the potential of utilizing the sportomics approach to translate Big Data regarding top-level athletes into studying different human diseases, especially with nontargeted analysis. Furthermore, we present how the amalgamation of bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, and integrative computational analysis aids in investigating biochemical pathways, and facilitates the search for various biomarkers. We also highlight how sportomics can offer relevant information about doping control analysis. Overall, sportomics offers a comprehensive approach providing novel insights into human metabolism during metabolic stress, leveraging cutting-edge systems science techniques and technologies.

Members of the genus Aconitum have been used for millennia, both as poisons and medicines, in Eastern culture. Higenamine has non-selective beta-agonist effects, activating both ß1 and ß2 adrenoreceptors, and is present in a variety of plants. The World Anti-Doping Agency has banned Higenamine both in competition and out of competition. Due to the common uses of higenamine in Brazilian culture, both as medicine and food, we studied the urinary concentrations of higenamine after the consumption of fruits of the Annona genus. We evaluated whether the ingestion of these fruits has the potential to cause anti-doping code violations. We measured higenamine concentrations for a 72 h period in the urine of ten healthy, physically active males (age 20-30; weight 70-80 kg; not consuming supplements or medications) after eating a unique meal containing fruits. Fruit consumption ranges were: Carica papaya (control) 348 ± 98 g; A. muricata 450 ± 282 g; and A. squamosa 314 ± 60 g. (all mean± SD). Higenamine was measured using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray-tandem mass spectrometry. The appearance of urinary higenamine occurred within the first 12 h after eating A. muricata (n = 3), and the maximum concentration found was 1.9 ng/mL. The ingestion of A. squamosa has also been shown to cause higenamine urinary excretion. The elimination kinetics of the subjects who ingested A. squamosa (n = 4) were different from each other. After ingestion of the control fruit, C. papaya, we detected no higenamine in the urine of any participants (n = 3). Although the kinetics varied by individuals and fruits, A. muricata ingestion produced higher higenamine excretion; however, the A. squamosa portion weighed ∼66 % of the A. muricata portion. We conclude that eating Annonaceae family fruits cause detectable higenamine excretion. Conversely, single ingestion did not reach the WADA's threshold to cause adverse analytical findings.

Fenoterol is a sympathomimetic ß2 receptor agonist primarily used as a bronchodilator. Due to its sympathomimetic actions, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has banned it. Multiple acute weight loss protocols (WLP) are used by Olympic athletes for sports that segregate athletes by weight; these generally involve caloric and water deprivation combined with heat exposure. Athletes use WLP before weigh-in, then transition to different body acute weight regain protocols (WRP) before competitions. Here, we studied the pharmacokinetics of fenoterol under WLP conditions: energetic dietary restriction, decreased water intake, and exposure to a dry sauna (80 ± 2 °C), followed by a WRP. Five elite-level female judo athletes participated in the study. Four received fenoterol (200 µg; n = 2 or 400 µg; n = 2), while one was a control receiving placebo under identical conditions. We measured excretion of the fenoterol parent molecule and presented qualitative data of its sulfated metabolite using QqQ tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry for 118 h. The fenoterol parent appeared earlier in urine than did its conjugated metabolite; excretion profiles were similar among all subjects. The centers of mass for fenoterol parent curves were (time, fenoterol): athlete A (10.9, 7.3); athlete B (9.2, 27.3); athlete C (8.5, 6.9); athlete D (9.7, 5.0). After initiating WRP, we observed a burst in urinary fenoterol excretion once in complete decay. This trend was observed for all four athletes who received fenoterol. Our results suggest that during hypohydration, some of the unmetabolized fenoterol accumulates in tissues, then is released during rehydration. These findings can be important for detecting fenoterol use in athletes.

Sporothrix brasiliensis with low susceptibility isolates were described from the Brazilian zoonotic sporotrichosis hyperendemics. The aim of this work was to evaluate distinct fractions of Ocotea pulchella, Ocotea notata, Myrciaria floribunda, and Hypericum brasiliense plant extracts against itraconazole-sensitive and low susceptibility S. brasiliensis isolates. Crude extracts were tested against clinical isolates and the ATCC MYA4823 to determine the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and fungicidal or fungistatic activities (MFC). A high MICs and MFCs amplitude (1 - > 128 µg/mL) were obtained for seven extracts. The highest antimicrobial activities against sensitive S. brasiliensis were displayed by the ethyl acetate extracts of O. notata (MIC = 2-128 µg/mL) and M. floribunda (MIC = 1-8 µg/mL). A fungicidal effect was observed for all fraction extracts. Ocotea spp. and M. floribunda ethyl acetate extracts provide promising profiles against itraconazole-sensitive or low susceptibility S. brasiliensis. Future studies will determine if these extracts can contribute as alternative therapies to this neglected zoonosis.

Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by abnormal host response to infection. Millions of people are affected annually worldwide. Derangement of the inflammatory response is crucial in sepsis pathogenesis. However, metabolic, coagulation, and thermoregulatory alterations also occur in patients with sepsis. Fatty acid mobilization and oxidation changes may assume the role of a protagonist in sepsis pathogenesis. Lipid oxidation and free fatty acids (FFAs) are potentially valuable markers for sepsis diagnosis and prognosis. Herein, we discuss inflammatory and metabolic dysfunction during sepsis, focusing on fatty acid oxidation (FAO) alterations in the liver and muscle (skeletal and cardiac) and their implications in sepsis development.
