RESUMO

Understanding effects of climate change on ecosystems will require a diverse range of approaches. We proposed using downscaled climate models to generate realistic weather scenarios as experimental treatments. Kreyling et al. propose a gradient approach to determine the shape of response functions. These approaches are different, but highly complementary.

Trace elements in game meats remain a point of concern for both the public and policymakers alike due to the human health implications if levels present are above guideline limits. This study aimed to: (1) determine trace element concentrations (As, Cd, Hg, Pb Cr, Cu, Se, Zn) in edible portions (breast meat and liver) of the four most frequently hunted duck Anatidae species inhabiting wetlands in Victoria, Australia, to identify the risk to human health from consumption; (2) investigate landscape-scale variables that may influence the detected concentrations and; (3) review the studies available (n = 41) in duck liver and muscle tissues from the 1970s to 2024, to contextualise the detected concentrations found on a global scale. Our study shows that ducks in Victoria had trace element concentrations below tolerable daily intake (TDI) guidelines for human health with one exception: notably high Hg in a filter-feeding specialist, the Pink-eared duck (Malacorhynchus membranaceus). Yet, the only trace element concentrations that were influenced by proximity to populated centres, were As and Zn. Compared to international reports, Pb concentrations in livers and muscle of Victorian waterfowl were lower, however, Pink-eared ducks had higher Hg than other duck (Anas spp.) species. Review of the worldwide data indicate that Pb concentrations in liver tissues from all Anas species have declined from the 1970s to 2024. This is the first study to identify this trend at a global scale. International movements towards Pb-shot bans, along with phasing out of Pb in gasoline and paint are the most likely cause of declining concentrations in tissues of wild waterfowl. These findings strongly underscore the importance of legislative efforts to limit trace elements entering the environment.

Experimental studies assessing climatic effects on ecological communities have typically applied static warming treatments. Although these studies have been informative, they have usually failed to incorporate either current or predicted future, patterns of variability. Future climates are likely to include extreme events which have greater impacts on ecological systems than changes in means alone. Here, we review the studies which have used experiments to assess impacts of temperature on marine, freshwater and terrestrial communities, and classify them into a set of 'generations' based on how they incorporate variability. The majority of studies have failed to incorporate extreme events. In terrestrial ecosystems in particular, experimental treatments have reduced temperature variability, when most climate models predict increased variability. Marine studies have tended to not concentrate on changes in variability, likely in part because the thermal mass of oceans will moderate variation. In freshwaters, climate change experiments have a much shorter history than in the other ecosystems, and have tended to take a relatively simple approach. We propose a new 'generation' of climate change experiments using down-scaled climate models which incorporate predicted changes in climatic variability, and describe a process for generating data which can be applied as experimental climate change treatments.

The present study examined the occurrence and concentration of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) measured in game ducks (13 compounds), water, sediment, and soils (33 compounds) in waterways in Victoria, Australia. The study aimed to identify potential ecological and human health risks from measured PFAS concentrations. Four species of duck and samples of water, sediment, and soil were collected from 19 wetlands, which were chosen based on their popularity as hunting locations. The risks posed by 3 PFAS (perfluorooctanoic acid, perfluorohexane sulfonic acid [PFHxS], and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid [PFOS]) to the environment and human health were assessed using available national ecological and human health guidelines. A diverse range of short- and long-chain carboxylic and sulfonic acids were found in the environment and in ducks. Concentrations were generally low and varied between wetlands, duck species, tissue analyzed (breast or liver), and environmental compartment (water, sediment, soil). Higher PFOS concentrations in water and sediments were observed at wetlands near sources of contamination (i.e., a defense base or urban environment). Elevated PFOS and PFOS + PFHxS concentrations in ducks were observed near local point sources but also at wetlands with no known point sources of contamination. There were clear differences in PFAS concentrations detected in duck tissues versus the environment, highlighting complexities of bioaccumulation, movement of animals, and spatiotemporal variation and raising questions about the relevance of using abiotic criteria to assess risk to biota. Human health risk assessment showed that only ducks inhabiting wetlands near local sources of PFAS were likely to pose a risk to consumers. Information on potentially harmful emerging and legacy chemicals is essential to understand the risks to the environment and inform regulatory actions. The objective of this study was to assess the occurrence, concentration, and distribution of emerging and legacy contaminants across a gradient of land-use intensity and determine the risk posed to aquatic ecosystems. The land-use intensity gradient considered was: background/undeveloped < low-intensity agriculture < high-intensity agriculture < urban residential < urban industrial. Twenty-five sites were sampled for surface water, sediment, and soil. A total of 218 chemicals were analyzed: pesticides, per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), polybrominated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), phthalates, and short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs). The risk posed by the analyzed chemicals to the aquatic environment was measured using hazard quotients (HQs), which were calculated by dividing the maximum measured environmental concentration by a predicted no-effect concentration for each chemical. A HQ > 1 was considered to indicate a high risk of adverse effects from the given chemical. A total of 68 chemicals were detected: 19 pesticides, 18 PFAS, 28 PBDEs, two phthalates, and SCCPs (as total SCCPs). There were no significant differences in the overall chemical composition between land uses. However, the insecticide bifenthrin, PFAS, PBDEs, and phthalates were more frequently found in samples from residential and/or industrial sites, suggesting urban land uses are hotspots and potential large-scale sources of these chemicals. Nineteen chemicals had a HQ > 1; most had a restricted spatial distribution limited to high-intensity agriculture and industrial sites in Melbourne. Bifenthrin and the perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) had the highest HQs in residential and industrial sites, suggesting an increased risk to aquatic ecosystems in urban settings. The results of this study will enhance future research, predictive methods, and effective targeting of monitoring, and will help guide regulatory management actions and mitigation solutions.

We explored possible links between vector activity and genetic diversity in introduced populations of Limnoperna fortunei by characterizing the genetic structure in native and introduced ranges in Asia and South America. We surveyed 24 populations: ten in Asia and 14 in South America using the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene, as well as eight polymorphic microsatellite markers. We performed population genetics and phylogenetic analyses to investigate population genetic structure across native and introduced regions. Introduced populations in Asia exhibit higher genetic diversity (H(E) = 0.667-0.746) than those in South America (H(E) =  0.519-0.575), suggesting higher introduction effort for the former populations. We observed pronounced geographical structuring in introduced regions, as indicated by both mitochondrial and nuclear markers based on multiple genetic analyses including pairwise Ф(ST), F(ST), bayesian clustering method, and three-dimensional factorial correspondence analyses. Pairwise F(ST) values within both Asia (F(ST) = 0.017-0.126, P = 0.000-0.009) and South America (F(ST) =0.004-0.107, P = 0.000-0.721) were lower than those between continents (F(ST) = 0.180-0.319, P = 0.000). Fine-scale genetic structuring was also apparent among introduced populations in both Asia and South America, suggesting either multiple introductions of distinct propagules or strong post-introduction selection and demographic stochasticity. Higher genetic diversity in Asia as compared to South America is likely due to more frequent propagule transfers associated with higher shipping activities between source and donor regions within Asia. This study suggests that the intensity of human-mediated introduction vectors influences patterns of genetic diversity in non-indigenous species.
