RESUMO

The gravitational pressure in many astrophysical objects exceeds one gigabar (one billion atmospheres)1-3, creating extreme conditions where the distance between nuclei approaches the size of the K shell. This close proximity modifies these tightly bound states and, above a certain pressure, drives them into a delocalized state4. Both processes substantially affect the equation of state and radiation transport and, therefore, the structure and evolution of these objects. Still, our understanding of this transition is far from satisfactory and experimental data are sparse. Here we report on experiments that create and diagnose matter at pressures exceeding three gigabars at the National Ignition Facility5 where 184 laser beams imploded a beryllium shell. Bright X-ray flashes enable precision radiography and X-ray Thomson scattering that reveal both the macroscopic conditions and the microscopic states. The data show clear signs of quantum-degenerate electrons in states reaching 30 times compression, and a temperature of around two million kelvins. At the most extreme conditions, we observe strongly reduced elastic scattering, which mainly originates from K-shell electrons. We attribute this reduction to the onset of delocalization of the remaining K-shell electron. With this interpretation, the ion charge inferred from the scattering data agrees well with ab initio simulations, but it is significantly higher than widely used analytical models predict6.

The study of high-velocity particle-laden flow interactions is of importance for the understanding of a wide range of natural phenomena, ranging from planetary formation to cloud interactions. Experimental observations of particle dynamics are sparse given the difficulty of generating high-velocity flows of many particles. Ejecta microjets are micron-scale jets formed by strong shocks interacting with imprinted surfaces to generate particle plumes traveling at several kilometers per second. As such, the interaction of two ejecta microjets provides a novel experimental methodology to study interacting particle streams. In this Letter, we report the first time sequences of x-ray radiography images of two interacting tin ejecta microjets taken on a platform designed for the OMEGA Extended Performance (OMEGA EP) laser. We observe that the microjets pass through each other unattenuated for the case of 11.7±3.2 GPa shock pressures and jet velocities of 2.2±0.5 km/s but show strong interaction dynamics for 116.0±6.1 GPa shock pressures and jet velocities of 6.5±0.5 km/s. We find that radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of the experiments are able to capture many aspects of the collisional behavior, such as the attenuation of jet velocity in the direction of propagation, but are unable to match the full spread of the strongly interacting cloud.

We report an improved measurement of the free neutron lifetime τ_{n} using the UCNτ apparatus at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. We count a total of approximately 38×10^{6} surviving ultracold neutrons (UCNs) after storing in UCNτ's magnetogravitational trap over two data acquisition campaigns in 2017 and 2018. We extract τ_{n} from three blinded, independent analyses by both pairing long and short storage time runs to find a set of replicate τ_{n} measurements and by performing a global likelihood fit to all data while self-consistently incorporating the ß-decay lifetime. Both techniques achieve consistent results and find a value τ_{n}=877.75±0.28_{stat}+0.22/-0.16_{syst} s. With this sensitivity, neutron lifetime experiments now directly address the impact of recent refinements in our understanding of the standard model for neutron decay.

BACKGROUND: Parents offer a unique perspective as they may view literacy instruction through the lens of its direct impact on their child's daily life. Further, they are likely to provide insight into the interactions between the perceived effectiveness of instruction and their expectations for their child's success. The purposes of the current investigation were to explore perceptions of parents of children with intellectual disability (ID) related to their child's literacy instruction in schools and understand parental expectations for their child's literacy performance. METHODS: In the current investigation, we surveyed 211 parents of children with ID in one state within the USA to identify their perceptions related to their child's literacy outcomes and instruction. The survey instrument contained 25 items including 9 multiple-choice, 12 multiple-selection, 2 open-response and 2 rank order items. RESULTS: Data indicated significant differences across grade bands related to the type of skills students engage in learning, the importance of specific literacy skills and the challenges or barriers for students to engage in literacy instruction. The overwhelming majority of parents reported their child learning to read as very important and believe there is a difference in life outcomes between children who can read written words and those who cannot. Parents of elementary school children report barriers of disruptive behaviour, the inability of children to remain seated and distractibility more so than parents of secondary students. Parents of high school students reported a lack of instructional time more often than parents of middle and elementary school. CONCLUSIONS: While parents across grade bands reported the importance of literacy skills for students with ID and instruction in reading comprehension, listening comprehension and vocabulary, some differences were noted. Only half the parents reported an increased focus on literacy instruction, including on essential skills (e.g. decoding), in the earlier grades. Problem behaviour and motivation served as barriers to literacy for elementary students, and a lack of instructional time served as a barrier to writing for high school students.

We present results for the ionic structure in hydrocarbons (polystyrene, polyethylene) that were shock compressed to pressures of up to 190 GPa, inducing rapid melting of the samples. The structure of the resulting liquid is then probed using in situ diffraction by an x-ray free electron laser beam, demonstrating the capability to obtain reliable diffraction data in a single shot, even for low-Z samples without long range order. The data agree well with ab initio simulations, validating the ability of such approaches to model mixed samples in states where complex interparticle bonds remain, and showing that simpler models are not necessarily valid. While the results clearly exclude the possibility of complete carbon-hydrogen demixing at the conditions probed, they also, in contrast to previous predictions, indicate that diffraction is not always a sufficient diagnostic for this phenomenon.

Fornal and Grinstein recently proposed that the discrepancy between two different methods of neutron lifetime measurements, the beam and bottle methods, can be explained by a previously unobserved dark matter decay mode, n→X+γ. We perform a search for this decay mode over the allowed range of energies of the monoenergetic γ ray for X to be dark matter. A Compton-suppressed high-purity germanium detector is used to identify γ rays from neutron decay in a nickel-phosphorous-coated stainless-steel bottle. A combination of Monte Carlo and radioactive source calibrations is used to determine the absolute efficiency for detecting γ rays arising from the dark matter decay mode. We exclude the possibility of a sufficiently strong branch to explain the lifetime discrepancy with 97% confidence.

RESUMO

The public health impact of hydraulic fracturing remains a high profile and controversial issue. While there has been a recent surge of published papers, it remains an under-researched area despite being possibly the most substantive change in energy production since the advent of the fossil fuel economy. We review the evidence of effects in five public health domains with a particular focus on the UK: exposure, health, socio-economic, climate change and seismicity. While the latter would seem not to be of significance for the UK, we conclude that serious gaps in our understanding of the other potential impacts persist together with some concerning signals in the literature and legitimate uncertainties derived from first principles. There is a fundamental requirement for high-quality epidemiological research incorporating real exposure measures, improved understanding of methane leakage throughout the process, and a rigorous analysis of the UK social and economic impacts. In the absence of such intelligence, we consider it prudent to incentivise further research and delay any proposed developments in the UK. Recognising the political realities of the planning and permitting process, we make a series of recommendations to protect public health in the event of hydraulic fracturing being approved in the UK.

We investigate a new regime for betatron x-ray emission that utilizes kilojoule-class picosecond lasers to drive wakes in plasmas. When such laser pulses with intensities of ∼5×10^{18} W/cm^{2} are focused into plasmas with electron densities of ∼1×10^{19} cm^{-3}, they undergo self-modulation and channeling, which accelerates electrons up to 200 MeV energies and causes those electrons to emit x rays. The measured x-ray spectra are fit with a synchrotron spectrum with a critical energy of 10-20 keV, and 2D particle-in-cell simulations were used to model the acceleration and radiation of the electrons in our experimental conditions.

AIM: AZD8931 is an oral equipotent inhibitor of EGFR (erbB1), HER2 (erbB2) and HER3 (erbB3) signaling. This Phase I, open-label study evaluated the safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics of multiple ascending doses of AZD8931 in patients with advanced solid tumors (NCT00637039). METHODS: Patients received AZD8931 as a single oral dose followed by 4 days of observation, then twice-daily dosing for 21 consecutive days. Using a standard 3 + 3 design, AZD8931 doses were escalated from 40 mg bid until the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) was established. RESULTS: Twenty-eight patients received AZD8931 (n = 5, 40 mg bid; n = 8, 80 mg bid; n = 6, 160 mg bid; n = 6, 240 mg bid; n = 3, 300 mg bid). Ovary (n = 8) and breast (n = 5) were the most common primary tumor types. The most frequent adverse events were treatment-emergent cutaneous (n = 27) and diarrhea (n = 21). Dose-limiting toxicities (DLTs) were identified in one patient in the 240 mg bid cohort (Grade 3 rash) and two patients in the 300 mg bid cohort (Grade 3 and 4 diarrhea). The pharmacokinetic profile of AZD8931 supported twice-daily dosing. AZD8931 was rapidly absorbed (median tmax 1-3 h), was well distributed and had moderate to high clearance with an elimination half-life of approximately 11 h. Exposure appeared to increase approximately proportionally with dose up to 160 mg. Of 21 patients evaluable for response at day 21, 12 had stable disease and nine had disease progression. CONCLUSION: The MTD of AZD8931 determined from the 21-day DLT period was 240 mg bid, although more long-term data are needed to confirm a dose of AZD8931 suitable for chronic treatment.

RESUMO

The unique imaging capabilities of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) make it a valuable tool for characterizing the structure and function of the heart and for providing procedural monitoring. With the creation of new devices and expansion of procedural options with increased applications, multiplanar and three-dimensional imaging with TEE can be essential for clinical decision making. A description of the indications and clinical application of TEE in animals while highlighting probe characteristics, limitations and patient safety are the focus of this review. The increased availability of three-dimensional imaging in smaller probes, advanced applications including photorealistic and fusion imaging, and the development of recommended standards for performing a comprehensive TEE imaging study including training guidelines may facilitate the use of TEE in the veterinary field.

INTRODUCTION: Small dogs with patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) may be unable to undergo transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) with traditional probes. OBJECTIVES: To report the utility of TEE using a microprobe in dogs weighing less than 4 kg diagnosed with PDA for determination of transcatheter procedural candidacy, device selection, and intraoperative procedural guidance. ANIMALS: Eight dogs weighing less than 4 kg diagnosed with PDA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All dogs had standard transthoracic echocardiography and microprobe TEE imaging. The quality of TEE images was graded as optimal, adequate, or poor. The ability of TEE to assess PDA anatomy, determine procedural candidacy, provide procedural guidance, detect deployed devices, and assess residual flow was recorded. RESULTS: The median age of included dogs was 6.4 months (range: 3.2-15.7 months) and the median body weight was 2.2 kg (range: 1.4-3.8 kg). Microprobe TEE images were adequate or optimal in all dogs and were integral for guiding procedural candidacy decisions. Transcatheter procedures were not pursued in two dogs based on TEE images. In the other six dogs, TEE procedural guidance was useful during transvenous (n = 5) and transarterial (n = 1) PDA occlusion attempts. Each deployed device (n = 4) was easily detected with the TEE microprobe. Real-time confirmation of adequate device sizing and placement was possible prior to release and residual flow could be monitored after release. CONCLUSIONS: Transesophageal echocardiography using a microprobe in dogs weighing less than 4 kg diagnosed with PDA allowed for characterization of PDA anatomy and determination of transcatheter procedural candidacy. Microprobe TEE images were integral for PDA device selection and offered valuable intraoperative procedural guidance.

Texture and sensory studies at various temperatures are important in evaluating and improving the functionality of butter. While literature is scarce, we evaluated and compared the effect of temperature (5-25°C) on the texture, rheological and sensory properties of commercial butter samples (salted, unsalted, cultured, and spreadable) from the New Zealand market. In addition, the instrumental analyses were compared with the sensory evaluation, to understand the possibility of using instrumental analysis to evaluate consumer liking for different butters. Butter type, temperature, and their type-temperature interaction exhibited significant differences for all instrumental textural parameters. As expected, higher temperature produced softer butter that was more spreadable, liquid-like, less adhesive, less cohesive, had lower storage modulus (G') and lower loss modulus (G″) with the melting of milk fat crystals; however, the rate of change varied for the different butter samples. We have established meltability as the parameter for evaluating butter selection for different applications. The spreadable butter sample exhibited the lowest hardness and G', and highest spreadability (p < .05) at all temperatures, owing to its low solid fat content and the abundance of low-melting triglycerides. The cultured butter sample had the highest melting point, owing to compositional differences. The instrumental and sensory texture analyses were highly correlated, indicating the comparative effectiveness of both approaches for studying the effects of different temperatures on butter textural properties. Overall, our findings provide detailed reference to the dairy industry for butter manufacture, considering variation in fatty acid composition, texture analysis, rheology, and sensory analysis, over the range of storage/usage temperatures.

Triatomine insects are vectors of the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi- the causative agent of Chagas disease. Chagas disease is endemic to Latin America and the southern United States and can cause severe cardiac damage in infected mammals, ranging from chronic disease to sudden death. Identifying interactions among triatomines, T. cruzi discrete typing units (DTUs), and blood feeding hosts is necessary to understand parasite transmission dynamics and effectively protect animal and human health. Through manual insect trapping efforts, kennel staff collections, and with the help of a trained scent detection dog, we collected triatomines from 10 multi-dog kennels across central and south Texas over a one-year period (2018-2019) and tested a subset to determine their T. cruzi infection status and identify the primary bloodmeal hosts. We collected 550 triatomines, including Triatoma gerstaeckeri (n = 515), Triatoma lecticularia (n = 15), Triatoma sanguisuga (n = 6), and Triatoma indictiva (n = 2), with an additional 10 nymphs and 2 adults unable to be identified to species. The trained dog collected 42 triatomines, including nymphs, from areas not previously considered vector habitat by the kennel owners. Using qPCR, we found a T. cruzi infection prevalence of 47 % (74/157), with T. lecticularia individuals more likely to be infected with T. cruzi than other species. Infected insects harbored two T. cruzi discrete typing units: TcI (64 %), TcIV (23 %), and mixed TcI/TcIV infections (13 %). Bloodmeal host identification was successful in 50/149 triatomines, revealing the majority (74 %) fed on a dog (Canis lupus), with other host species including humans (Homo sapiens), raccoons (Procyon lotor), chickens (Gallus gallus), wild pig (Sus scrofa), black vulture (Coragyps atratus), cat (Felis catus), and curve-billed thrasher (Toxostoma curviostre). Given the frequency of interactions between dogs and infected triatomines in these kennel environments, dogs may be an apt target for future vector control and T. cruzi intervention efforts.

New applications of charged particle radiography have been developed over the past two decades that extend the range of radiographic techniques providing high-speed sequences of radiographs of thicker objects with higher effective dose than can be obtained with conventional radiographic techniques. In this paper, we review the motivation and the development of flash radiography and in particular, charged particle radiography.

Gene dosage of the apolipoprotein E (APOE) epsilon 4 allele is a major risk factor for familial Alzheimer disease (AD) of late onset (after age 60). Here we studied a large series of 115 AD case subjects and 243 controls as well as 150 affected and 197 unaffected members of 66 AD families. Our data demonstrate a protective effect of the epsilon 2 allele, in addition to the dose effect of the epsilon 4 allele in sporadic AD. Although a substantial proportion (65%) of AD is attributable to the presence of epsilon 4 alleles, risk of AD is lowest in subjects with the epsilon 2/epsilon 3 genotype, with an additional 23% of AD attributable to the absence of an epsilon 2 allele. The opposite actions of the epsilon 2 and epsilon 4 alleles further support the direct involvement of APOE in the pathogenesis of AD.

The composition of nutrient-removing microbial communities in five full-scale membrane bioreactors (MBRs) was investigated using fluorescence in situ hybridization and 16S rRNA pyrosequencing and compared to similar analyses of conventional activated sludge (CAS) communities. The communities were highly similar but some genera that are always present in enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) (core groups) were absent in the MBRs. The overall phylogenetic similarity of the communities indicated that these differences were primarily closely related groups. More research is needed to establish the operational significance of the observed differences between MBR and CAS sludge.

Since 2006 more than 50 Danish full-scale wastewater treatment plants with nutrient removal have been investigated in a project called 'The Microbial Database for Danish Activated Sludge Wastewater Treatment Plants with Nutrient Removal (MiDas-DK)'. Comprehensive sets of samples have been collected, analyzed and associated with extensive operational data from the plants. The community composition was analyzed by quantitative fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) supported by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing and deep metagenomics. MiDas-DK has been a powerful tool to study the complex activated sludge ecosystems, and, besides many scientific articles on fundamental issues on mixed communities encompassing nitrifiers, denitrifiers, bacteria involved in P-removal, hydrolysis, fermentation, and foaming, the project has provided results that can be used to optimize the operation of full-scale plants and carry out trouble-shooting. A core microbial community has been defined comprising the majority of microorganisms present in the plants. Time series have been established, providing an overview of temporal variations in the different plants. Interestingly, although most microorganisms were present in all plants, there seemed to be plant-specific factors that controlled the population composition thereby keeping it unique in each plant over time. Statistical analyses of FISH and operational data revealed some correlations, but less than expected. MiDas-DK (www.midasdk.dk) will continue over the next years and we hope the approach can inspire others to make similar projects in other parts of the world to get a more comprehensive understanding of microbial communities in wastewater engineering.

INTRODUCTIONS: Patient size is a limiting factor for transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) in small dogs. The objective of this study was to describe imaging capabilities of two probes for TEE in small dogs. ANIMALS, MATERIALS, AND METHODS: Prospective study in 10 client-owned dogs weighing <4 kg with congenital heart disease (CHD). Dogs had TEE performed with a microprobe (10T-D, GE Medical) and intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) catheter-based probe (AcuNav™, Biosense Webster) in the esophagus in alternating order. Ease of placement, ability to acquire images of the CHD, image quality, and probe limitations were recorded. RESULTS: Median weight was 2.4 kg (range, 1.0-3.2). Congenital abnormalities included patent ductus arteriosus (n = 9) and pulmonary valve stenosis (n = 1). The 10T-D microprobe was easy to place (n = 8) or achievable with gentle manipulation (n = 2), and image quality of the CHD was optimal (n = 8), adequate (n = 1), or poor (n = 1). The ICE probe was difficult to place in the esophagus even with an external support system (n = 9) or could not be placed (n = 1), and image quality of the CHD was optimal (n = 2), adequate (n = 3), or poor (n = 5). Both probes provided images in a 1.0-kg dog. Probe limitations included lack of lateral motion (microprobe), the need for an external support system (ICE probe) and inability to consistently maintain contact with the esophagus (ICE probe). CONCLUSION: The 10T-D microprobe provided high-quality TEE images more consistently than the ICE probe in the majority of dogs in this study; however, the lack of lateral motion can diminish its utility in some dogs.

RESUMO

A three-year-old, spayed female, Bichon Frise was diagnosed with an anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery, a rare congenital coronary artery defect which has only been reported in two other dogs. Echocardiography was initially performed, though the final diagnosis was made with angiography and computed tomography angiography. An extensive network of collateral coronary circulation allowed for communication between the dilated, tortuous right coronary artery, and the anomalous left coronary artery. Though collateral circulation likely prolonged the patient's life, it is suspected that coronary steal phenomenon and chronic myocardial ischemia ultimately led to fatal ventricular arrhythmias. The dog died suddenly at the age of six, three years after initial diagnosis.

INTRODUCTION: Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCS) are predisposed to developing myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD). Dogs with stage B2 MMVD benefit from medication. OBJECTIVES: To develop (1) breed-specific cut-offs for individual screening tests and (2) predictive models utilizing physical examination (PE), ECG, radiograph, and blood-based biomarker variables in combination for identification of echocardiographic stage B2 MMVD in preclinical CKCS. ANIMALS: Adult, preclinical CKCS not receiving cardiac medications (N = 226). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Prospective, cross-sectional study. Enrolled CKCS underwent PE, ECG, radiography, Doppler blood pressure measurement, echocardiography, and biomarker testing. Dogs were grouped by MMVD stage using echocardiography only. The discriminatory ability of individual tests to identify stage B2 was assessed, and prediction models were developed using variables derived from four 'tests' (PE, ECG, radiography, and biomarkers). RESULTS: N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and radiographic vertebral heart size (VHS) had the best discriminatory ability of individual diagnostic tests to differentiate stage A/B1 CKCS from stage B2, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.855 and 0.843, respectively. An NT-proBNP ≥1138 pmol/L or a VHS ≥11.5 had high specificity for predicting stage B2 (90.1% and 90.6%, respectively). Prediction models incorporating variables from multiple tests had better discriminatory ability than single tests. The four-test prediction model had an AUC of 0.971. Three and two-test models had AUCs ranging between 0.925-0.959 and 0.895-0.949, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Both NT-proBNP and VHS have good utility for predicting echocardiographic stage B2 MMVD in CKCS as individual tests. Prediction models incorporating multiple test variables have superior discriminatory ability.
