RESUMO

A strategy for integrated and reconfigurable optical paths based on stacking optical functional films is proposed. It is demonstrated by stacking two liquid crystal polymer q-plates and one quarter-wave plate for vector vortex beams generation. The topological charge and polarization order of generated vector vortex beams can be controlled independently by stacking and reordering different optical films with repeated adhesive ability. It supplies a low-cost, light-weight and versatile technique for reducing the volume of free-space optical system and has a great potential in optical researches and applications.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Delayed surgical management of acetabular fractures, often necessary due to life-threatening concomitant injuries, is a great challenge because delays may potentially increase complications and decrease outcomes. We report clinical outcomes of 61 acetabular fractures treated by delayed open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with an injury-to-surgery interval (ISI) of 22-399 days. METHODS: Operations were performed between April 2001 and December 2008. There were 61 cases (42 men 19 women), with an average age of 38 years. All patients were followed for an average of 82 months. Demographic data, fracture pattern, ISI, concomitant injuries, surgical approach, complications and clinical outcomes were recorded and analysed. There were 16 simple fractures (26.2%) and 45 associated fractures (73.8%). Matta criteria were used to evaluate reduction quality. The Merle d'Aubigné and Postel scoring system was employed to assess post-operative functionality. RESULTS: Anatomical reduction was achieved in 45 cases (73.8%). The clinical result was excellent in 38 cases, good in 13, fair in six and poor in four. Osteonecrosis of the femoral head was observed in three cases, and heterotopic ossification was found in 28 cases. Four patients had transient palsy of the sciatic nerve. CONCLUSIONS: ORIF for fresh acetabular fractures might yield a better prognosis; however, for delayed acetabular fractures, clinical outcomes are also predictable when sophisticated surgical techniques are employed. Our results indicate that delayed ORIF could yield satisfactory clinical outcomes in the majority of patients with acetabular fractures.

RESUMO

This research is to study the relationship between HPLC fingerprints of Moutan Cortex, Paeoniae Radix Rubra and Paeoniae Radix Alba and their activity on lipopolysaccharide-induced acute lung injury. HPLC fingerprints of each extract of Moutan Cortex,Paeoniae Radix Rubra and Paeoniae Radix Alba were established by an optimized HPLC-MS method. The activities of all samples against protein and tumor necrosis a factor were tested by the model of lipopolysaccharide-induced acute lung injury. The possible relationship between HPLC-MS fingerprints and the activitieswere deduced by the Partial least squares regression analysis method. Samples were analyzed by HPLC-MS/MS to identify the major peaks. The results showed that each sample had some effect on acute lung injury. Four components with a lager contribution rate of efficacy were calculated by the research of spectrum-effect relationship. Moutan Cortex exhibited good activity on acute lung injury, and gallic acid, paeoniflorin, galloylpaeoniflorin and paeonol were the main effective components.

RESUMO

Cytotoxic T lymphocyte-associated antigen 4 (CTLA-4) is an important molecule in the regulation of T cells, so the CTLA-4 gene has been considered as a strong candidate associated with T cell-mediated autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). CTLA-4 has many variants and polymorphic forms, among which the +49A/G polymorphism, causing a non-synonymous substitution, has been studied most. However, previous studies of the association between the +49A/G polymorphism of the CTLA-4 gene and RA have provided conflicting results. The aim of this study was to determine the potential relationship of the CTLA-4 +49A/G polymorphism and the risk of RA in Chinese Han population. TaqMan assay was used to genotype the +49A/G polymorphism in 1,489 RA patients and 1,200 healthy controls. Furthermore, a meta-analysis of all studies relating this polymorphism in Chinese population to the risk of RA was performed. The genotype and allele frequencies of the CTLA-4 +49A/G in patients with RA differed significantly from those of controls (P = 0.03 and P = 0.007, respectively). The meta-analysis also revealed that the CTLA-4 +49G allele was associated with an increased risk of RA in Chinese population. Our results suggested that the CTLA-4 gene might contribute to the pathogenesis of RA, and the +49A/G polymorphism of this gene was a risk factor associated with increased RA susceptibility in Chinese Han population.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate clinical outcomes and complications following minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) with the proximal humeral internal locking system (PHILOS) for treating proximal humeral shaft fracture through the deltopectoral approach. METHODS: Between November 2008 and March 2010, 74 patients with unilateral proximal humeral shaft fractures were treated using the MIPO technique with the PHILOS through the deltopectoral approach. Patients received an average follow-up of 16.9 (range, 12-24) months, and the final follow-up included anteroposterior and lateral imaging and recording of postoperative complications. The Constant-Murley shoulder score was used to evaluate function. RESULTS: No intraoperative complications occurred. Postoperative complications included subacromial impingement in four patients. There was no deep infection, neurovascular damage, breakage or implant loosening. All fractures united in an average time of 17.4 (15-25) weeks. In terms of function, the Constant-Murley score was 85.8 points on average (range, 67-100). The range of motion of the involved shoulder was satisfactory, and pain-free in 83.8 % of patients. CONCLUSIONS: Using the MIPO technique with the PHILOS through the deltopectoral approach is a valid and safe method of treating proximal humeral shaft fractures.

RESUMO

Chronic wounds are a frequent problem in developing countries, are often difficult to heal because they lack the necessary growth factors to maintain the healing process, and are frequently complicated by superinfection. Conventional therapies such as dressings, surgical debridement, and even skin grafting cannot provide satisfactory healing since these treatments are not able to provide enough necessary growth factors to modulate the healing process. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP), as a concentrate of platelets, releases a high concentration of multiple growth factors that can modulate healing processes. Furthermore, PRP also contains a high level of leukocytes, which can inhibit infection. PRP has been widely used in many clinical applications. Three patients with large chronic wounds were treated with PRP and achieved good clinical outcomes.

RESUMO

To simplify the prediction model of kiwifruit firmness, SNV was used to preprocess the near infrared (NIR) spectra (1 000-2 500 nm)of kiwifruit. PLS model simplification by optimizing spectral intervals and decreasing the number of factors through net analyte preprocessing (NAP)was carried out. Results showed that the performance of NAP/PLS model is the best. It was achieved with 5 factors in five wavenumber ranges(5 189-5 370, 4 549-4 620, 6 049-6 230, 6 999-7 730, and 6 249-6 614 cm(-1)). The optimal model was achieved with R2 = 0.819 41 and RMSECV = 0.701 77 in the calibration set and R2 = 0.780 67 and RMSEP = 0.882 71 in the prediction set. This indicates that the model not only may efficiently simplify PLS model, but also may improve precision and predictive ability.

RESUMO

Cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) chiral superstructures exhibit unique features; that is, polychromatic and spin-determined phase modulation. Here, a concept for digitalized chiral superstructures is proposed, which further enables the arbitrary manipulation of reflective geometric phase and may significantly upgrade existing optical apparatus. By encoding a specifically designed binary pattern, an innovative CLC optical vortex (OV) processor is demonstrated. Up to 25 different OVs are extracted with equal efficiency over a wavelength range of 116 nm. The multiplexed OVs can be detected simultaneously without mode crosstalk or distortion, permitting a polychromatic, large-capacity, and in situ method for parallel OV processing. Such complex but easily fabricated self-assembled chiral superstructures exhibit versatile functionalities, and provide a satisfactory platform for OV manipulation and other cutting-edge territories. This work is a vital step towards extending the fundamental understanding and fantastic applications of ordered soft matter.

RESUMO

Long-term alcohol abuse causes musculoskeletal disorders, among of which, alcohol-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is of concern due to its significant and severe complications. A variety of methods have been attempted to prevent alcohol-induced ONFH, and monomers extracted from Chinese herbs might benefit the disease profoundly. In the current study, muscone, the main ingredient of musk, was used to prevent alcohol-induced ONFH. In vitro, ethanol was used to affect the potential of osteogenesis and proliferation of human bone mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs), and beneficial role of muscone was investigated on hBMSCs. In vivo, following the establishment of alcohol-induced ONFH, muscone was employed to treat the diseased rats, which were analyzed by micro-CT scanning and a series of histologic staining. As a result, we found ethanol could significantly suppress osteogenic differentiation of hBMSCs, while muscone held the potential to promote ALP activity and mRNA expressions of COL1 and OCN under ethanol treatment. Meanwhile, imaging analysis revealed muscone could restore BV/TV ratio and bone mineral density of the necrotic femoral head, and the protective role of muscone on alcohol-induced ONFH was further confirmed by histologic examinations. Our study confirmed the protective effect of muscone against alcohol-induced ONFH both in vitro and in vivo. Therefore, muscone may be considered as a valuable therapeutic natural drug for alcohol-induced ONFH in humans.

RESUMO

Cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) has attracted intensive attention due to its ability to form a periodic helical structure with broad tunability. CLC gratings in open systems are especially promising in sensing and micromanipulation. However, there is still much to learn about the inherent mechanism of such gratings. We investigate the light-driven rotation and pitch-tuning behaviors of CLC gratings in semi-free films which are formed by spin-coating the CLC mixtures onto planarly photoaligned substrates. The doped azobenzene chiral molecular switch supplies great flexibility to realize the continuous grating rotation. The maximum continuous rotational angle reaches 987.8°. Moreover, dependencies of light-driven rotation and pitch tuning on the dopant concentration and exposure are studied. The model of director configuration in the semi-free film is constructed. Precise beam steering and synchronous micromanipulation are also demonstrated. Our work may provide new opportunities for the CLC grating in applications of beam steering, micromanipulation, and sensing.

RESUMO

Hierarchical architecture is of vital importance in soft materials. Focal conic domains (FCDs) of smectic liquid crystals, characterized by an ordered lamellar structure, attract intensive attention. Simultaneously tailoring the geometry and clustering characteristics of FCDs remains a challenge. Here, the 3D smectic layer origami via a 2D preprogrammed photoalignment film is accomplished. Full control of hierarchical superstructures is demonstrated, including the domain size, shape, and orientation, and the lattice symmetry of fragmented toric FCDs. The unique symmetry breaking of resultant superstructures combined with the optical anisotropy of the liquid crystals induces an intriguing polarization-dependent diffraction. This work broadens the scientific understanding of self-assembled soft materials and may inspire new opportunities for advanced functional materials and devices.

RESUMO

Uniform and patterned orientation of a crystallographic direction of ordered materials is of fundamental significance and of great interest for electronic and photonic applications. However, such orientation control is generally complicated and challenging with regard to inorganic and organic crystalline materials due to the occurrence of uncontrollable dislocations or defects. Achieving uniform lattice orientation in frustrated liquid-crystalline phases, like cubic blue phases, is a formidable task. Taming and tailoring the ordering of such soft, cubic lattices along predetermined or desired directions, and even imparting a prescribed pattern on lattice orientation, are more challenging, due to the entropy-domination attribute of soft matter. Herein, we disclose a facile way to realize designed micropatterning of a crystallographic direction of a soft, cubic liquid-crystal superstructure, exhibiting an alternate uniform and random orientation of the lattice crystallographic direction enabled by a photoalignment technique. Because of the rewritable trait of the photoalignment film, the pattern can be erased and rewritten on-demand by light. Such an oriented soft lattice sensitively responds to various external stimuli such as temperature, electric field, and light irradiation. Furthermore, advanced reflective photonic applications are achieved based on the patterned crystallographic orientation of the cubic blue phase, soft lattice.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: We introduce a new MIPPO procedure which is simple and effective for the treatment of extra-articular distal tibia facture (AO-43A). The aim of this retrospective study was to compare our modified MIPPO with IMN. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 64 patients treated with our modified MIPPO and 61 patients with IMN. The data of sex, age, operation time, blood loss, wound complications, mal-reduction, shortening and fracture healing was analyzed. RESULTS: The operation time was significantly shorter in the MIPPO group than in the IMN group (56.0min vs. 85.0min, P<0.001). There were 5 patients (8.2%) in the IMN group and 2 patients (3.1%) in the MIPPO group who had wound complications (P=0.399). Mal-reduction occurred in 17 patients (27.9%) managed with IMN and in 3 patients (4.7%) who had MIPPO (P<0.001). Furthermore, no patients had a left/right difference in the length of the tibia of >1cm and nonunion in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Our results have shown that our modified MIPPO has enormous advantages over IMN for extra-articular distal tibia fracture (AO-43A).
