RESUMO

We have developed self-propelled droplets having the abilities to detect a chemical gradient, to move toward a higher concentration of a specific metal ion (particularly the dysprosium ion), and to extract it. Such abilities rely on the high surface activity of di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (DEHPA) in response to pH and the affinity of DEHPA for the dysprosium ion. We used two external stimuli as chemical signals to control droplet motion: a pH signal to induce motility and metal ions to induce directional sensing. The oil droplets loaded with DEHPA spontaneously move around beyond the threshold of pH even in a homogeneous pH field. In the presence of a gel block containing metal ions, the droplets show directional sensing and their motility is biased toward higher concentrations. The metal ions investigated can be arranged in decreasing order of directional sensing as Dy(3+)≫ Nd(3+) > Y(3+) > Gd(3+). Furthermore, the analysis of components by using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer reveals that the metal ions can be extracted from the environmental media to the interiors of the droplets. This system may offer alternative self-propelled nano/microscale machines to bubble thrust engines powered by asymmetrical catalysts.

Association reactions by femtosecond laser filamentation in gaseous C2H4 were studied by time-of-flight mass spectrometry of neutral reaction products. Direct sampling from the reaction cell to a mass spectrometer via a differential pumping stage allowed the identification of various hydrocarbon molecules C n H m with n = 3-7 and m = 4-7, which includes species not observed in the previous studies. It was found that products containing three and four carbon atoms dominate the mass spectrum with smaller yields for higher-mass species, suggesting that carbon chain growth proceeds through the reaction with C2H4 in the reaction cell. The product distribution showed a clear dependence on the laser pulse energy for filamentation.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Gastrointestinal toxicity is common in patients receiving common therapy of ixazomib with lenalidomide and low-dose dexamethasone (IRd) for relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma. Here, we investigated the safety and effectiveness of ixazomib dosing schedules. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 17 consecutive patients treated with IRd (10 patients on ixazomib dose-escalation strategy (2.3 mg starting dose); seven patients on standard dose). RESULTS: The incidence of grade 3 or more haematological and grade 2 or more non-haematological adverse events was lower in the dose-escalation group than in the standard-dose group, and only that of diarrhoea was significantly lower. The median time to treatment interruption was significantly longer in the dose-escalation group than in the standard-dose group. There was no significant difference in the overall response rate (20% vs. 43%) and disease control rate (70% vs. 86%). CONCLUSION: A dose-escalation strategy to optimise ixazomib dosing may reduce treatment interruption due to adverse events without compromising its antitumor activity.

This paper investigated an ultrasound vibration cell patterning technique. The ultrasound cell culture dish consisted of a culture dish with a glass bottom and a glass disc with a piezoelectric ring that generated a resonance flexural vibration mode on the bottom of the dish. The growth of HeLa cells on the dish was observed under ultrasound excitation for 24 h. Large ultrasound vibrations on the dish inhibited the cell growth. The acoustic field was predicted with finite element analysis and it was found that the cell growth depended strongly on both the acoustic field in the culture medium and the vibration distribution of the dish. The ultrasound vibrations did not affect the viability of the cells, and the cell growth could be controlled by the flexural vibration of the cultured dish.
