RESUMO

By using a simple co-precipitation method, new Fe2 O3 -based nanocatalysts (samples) were synthesized. The samples were composites of two or three transition metal oxides, MOx (M=Fe, Mn, Co, Ni, and Cu). The average size of CuO crystallites in the composites composed of two oxide components (CuO-Fe2 O3 ) was about 14.3 nm, while in those composed of three (CuO-MnOx -Fe2 O3 ), the composite's phase compositions were almost in the amorphous form when annealing the sample at 300 °C. The latter sample had a specific surface area higher than that of the former, 207.9 and 142.1 g/m2 , respectively, explaining its higher catalytic CO oxidation. The CO conversion over the CuO-MnOx -Fe2 O3 -300 catalyst (1 g of catalyst, 2600 ppm of CO concentration in air, and 1.0 L/min of gas flow rate) begins at about 40 °C; the temperature for 50 % CO conversion (t50 ) is near 82 °C; and CO removal is almost complete at t99 ≈110 °C. The activity of the optimal sample was tested in different catalytic conditions, thereby observing a high durability of 99-100 % CO conversion at 130 °C. The obtained results were derived from XRD, FTIR, BET, SEM, elemental analysis and mapping, as well as catalytic experiments.

RESUMO

In this paper, we are concerned with the detection of point-like obstacles using elastic waves. We show that one type of waves, either the P or the S scattered waves, is enough for localizing the points. We also show how the use of S incident waves gives better resolution than the P waves. These affirmations are demonstrated by several numerical examples using a MUSIC type algorithm.

RESUMO

This study conducted a field investigation in the behavior of visitors in the pagoda and burning incense as well as its air pollution situation in Vietnam, and revealed that 92% of people used stick form for offering incense and mainly burning either 1 or 3 sticks/time. Incense smoke exposure caused aroma, comfortable, eye irritation, or hard to breathe. There were 70% of people being aware of the hazard of incense smoke. VOCs, PM2.5, PM10, and CO2 concentrations from burning incense in the Great hall were 1.6-2.5 times higher than those in outside areas. Pollutants' concentrations on the first of the month, full moon day, and Lunar New Year were from 1.5 to 2.0 times higher than those of normal days. A model was designed to collect incense smoke emitted by burning 1 and 3 sticks of seven types of incense on an open area. Except for CO found at low concentrations, VOCs, HCHO, PM2.5, PM10, and CO2 appeared in the smoke with the maximum concentrations higher 2.5-13.5 times than their allowable values. A photocatalytic device using titania nanotubes (TNTs) impregnated with various metals (Cd, Zn, Al, Cu, and Fe) was installed for incense smoke treatment. Effect of type and amount of photocatalyst, as well as initial VOC concentration, were tested. The results show that using 2.0 g of Zn/TNT photocatalysts under UV irradiation provided the highest VOC removal efficiency of 73%, suggesting the potential of application for burning incense in open areas.

RESUMO

In emergency cases such as disasters, supplying enough safe drinking water is one of the most urgent needs for human life. This research aimed to develop a chemical- and electricity-free drinking water treatment system based on microfiltration and catalysts of Ag and Ag-TiO2-SiO2 coated on glass spheres in both dark and sunlight conditions. The system was applied to treat raw water samples taken from five rivers in Vietnam, simulated floodwater samples with high turbidity and E. coli concentration, and real flooding water samples. The results showed the filtration unit fed with simulated floodwater generated lower fluxes and shorter working durations before chemical cleaning than that fed with normal river water. However, filtrate quality was not significantly different for these five water samples with very low values of turbidity (0-0.66 NTU), total coliform (5-19 CFU (100 mL)-1), and E. coli (0-17 CFU (100 mL)-1). The catalyst units using glass spheres coated with either Ag in dark and sunlight or Ag-TiO2-SiO2 under sunlight can completely remove E. coli and coliform as well as additionally mitigate natural organic matters. This study hence suggests the combination of microfiltration and Ag-based catalytic treatment for safe drinking water supply in emergencies, especially for flooding conditions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) plays an essential role in the modulation of astrocyte functions. Although lactate secretion from astrocytes contributes to many forms of neuronal plasticity in the central nervous system, including fear learning and memory, the role of PACAP in lactate secretion from astrocytes is unclear. METHODS: The amygdala and hippocampus of PACAP (+ / +) and PACAP (-/-) mice were acquired 1 h after memory acquisition and recall in the passive avoidance test. The concentration of glycogen and lactate in these regions was measured. The concentration of lactate in the hippocampus's extracellular fluid was also measured by microdialysis during memory acquisition or intracerebroventricular administration of PACAP. RESULTS: We observed that memory acquisition caused a significant decrease in glycogen concentration and increased lactate concentration in the PACAP (+ / +) mice's hippocampus. However, memory acquisition did not increase in the lactate concentration in PACAP (-/-) mice's hippocampus. Further, memory retrieval evoked lactate production in the amygdala and the hippocampus of PACAP (+ / +) mice. Still, there was no significant increase in lactate concentration in the same regions of PACAP (-/-) mice. In vivo microdialysis in rats revealed that the hippocampus's extracellular lactate concentration increased after a single PACAP intracerebroventricular injection. Additionally, the hippocampus's extracellular lactate concentration increased with the memory acquisition in PACAP (+ / +) mice, but not in PACAP (-/-) mice. CONCLUSIONS: PACAP may enhance lactate production and secretion in astrocytes during the acquisition and recall of fear memories.

RESUMO

Dalbergia tonkinensis is a critically vulnerable tree species that is distributed in Vietnam and Hainan Island of China. The complete chloroplast genome sequence of D. tonkinensis was characterized using Illumina pair-end sequencing. The cpDNA is 156,086 bp in length and contains a pair of 25,720 bp inverted repeats, one large single copy region of 85,761 bp, and one small single copy region of 18,885 bp. It contains 131 genes including 86 protein-coding genes, 36 tRNAs, eight rRNAs, and one pseudogene. The overall G + C content of the whole genome is 36.1%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 35 chloroplast genomes of Papilionoideae including Cercis glabra (as an outgroup) indicates that all the species of the Dalbergioids sensu lato formed a monophyletic clade and D. tonkinensis formed a sister relationship with the D. hainanensis and D. odorifera group.

RESUMO

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The ethnobotanical survey was carried out in the Bac Huong Hoa Nature Reserve (BHHNR), Vietnam. The Van Kieu ethnic group, the inhabitant of Nature Reserve, is rich in knowledge about the medicinal plants found in the Nature Reserve. However, their knowledge is less documented. AIM OF THE STUDY: The present study was conducted to document the use of medicinal plants, plant parts used, mode of preparation and delivery by the ethnic group of Van Kieu. The study also aimed at comparing the information generated by this study with the previously published Dictionary of Vietnam Medicinal plants (DVM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The information was collected through semi-structured and unstructured interviews. The interviews were conducted from April 2016 to March 2017. The number of informants involved in the survey was 93 belonging to age group of 20-81. Species Use-Reports (UR) were analyzed to determine the plant importance in the local and the Informant Consensus Factor (FIC). Local plant uses were listed and compared with the previously published data from Vietnam. RESULTS: Comprehensively 355 Use-Reports were documented in this study. A total of 111 medicinal plant species belonging to 102 genera and 46 families were reported. Out of 46 families, Euphorbiaceae (10 species), Compositae and Leguminosae (9 species each), Apocynaceae (7 species), Rutaceae and Rubiaceae (5 species each) were the dominant families. Leaves were the most frequently used plant part (43.1%) in the preparation of medicines. The most frequent preparation method was decoction (49%) while the oral route of administration (51%) was the most commonly mentioned mode of administration. Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam., Chromolaena odorata (L.) R.M.King & H.Rob., Blumea balsamifera (L.) DC., Psidium guajava L. and Catunaregam spinosa (Thunb.) Tirveng. were shown to be the most useful plants as indicated by their relatively high UR. Eight medicinal plants (7.21%) used by Van Kieu ethnic people have not been previously reported in DVM. CONCLUSION: The Van Kieu ethnic group holds valuable knowledge about uses of medicinal plant resources which is inherited through generations however this knowledge was not documented. The study highlights the need for documenting and publicizing the traditional medicinal knowledge which will provide basic data for further research and conservation.

RESUMO

The effects of oxygen supply within the range 20.8-50% (using pure oxygen and air), on cell cultures of Panax ginseng were investigated in a balloon-type bubble bioreactor (5L capacity, containing 4 L Murashige and Skoog medium, supplemented with 7.0 mgL(-1) indolebutyric acid, 0.5 mgL(-1) kinetin and 30 gL(-1) sucrose). A 40% oxygen supply was found to be optimal for the production of both cell mass and saponin yielding values of 12.8 g(DW)L(-1), 4.5mg(gDW)(-1) on day 25, respectively. Low (20.8%, 30%) and high (50%) oxygen concentration supplies were unfavorable to cell growth and saponin accumulation. The results indicate that oxygen supplementation to bioreactor-based ginseng cultures was beneficial for biomass accumulation and saponin production.
