RESUMO

Collaborative learning has documented benefits. Restrictions because of the COVID-19 pandemic prevented in-person collaborative experiences, therefore creating a pathway for online ones. An inter-university team previously created and published a novel framework that fosters collaborative learning for emergency/disaster preparedness and uses scenarios that attract student participation from a spectrum of disciplines. Here, we detail the implementation and evaluation of this framework in a virtual setting. Analysis of pre- and post-surveys from the virtual event revealed similar results to the previous in-person iterations. Results for both in-person and virtual events demonstrated that students had higher confidence and interest in emergency/disaster preparedness and interprofessional teamwork after participation. Implementation of this framework in a virtual setting can facilitate a positive student learning experience and inter-university collaboration.

The understanding of fossilization mechanisms at the nanoscale remains extremely challenging despite its fundamental interest and its implications for paleontology, archaeology, geoscience, and environmental and material sciences. The mineralization mechanism by which cellulosic, keratinous, and silk tissues fossilize in the vicinity of archaeological metal artifacts offers the most exquisite preservation through a mechanism unexplored on the nanoscale. It is at the center of the vast majority of ancient textiles preserved under nonextreme conditions, known through extremely valuable fragments. Here we show the reconstruction of the nanoscale mechanism leading to the preservation of an exceptional collection of ancient cellulosic textiles recovered in the ancient Near East (4,000 to 5,000 years ago). We demonstrate that even the most mineralized fibers, which contain inorganic compounds throughout their histology, enclose preserved cellulosic remains in place. We evidence a process that combines the three steps of water transport of biocidal metal cations and soil solutes, degradation and loss of crystallinity of cellulosic polysaccharides, and silicification.

The detailed description of corrosion processes in ancient and historical metal artifacts currently relies on the in-depth study of prepared cross sections. The in-plane elemental and phase distributions can be established from a combination of light and electron microscopy characterization. Here, we show that high-resolution virtual sectioning through synchrotron X-ray microcomputed tomography allows a precise noninvasive 3D description of the distribution of both internal and external mineral phases in whole objects. In fragments of early copper artifacts (third-second millennium BC) from Southern Mesopotamia and the Indus valley, this approach provided essential clues on long-term corrosion processes. Major and minor phases were identified through semiquantitative evaluation of attenuation coefficients using polychromatic X-ray illumination. We found evidence for initially unidentified phases through statistical processing of images. We discuss interpretation of the distribution of these phases. A good correlation between the corrosion phases identified by CT and by invasive BSE-SEM is demonstrated. In addition to the stratigraphy of the copper corrosion compounds, we examine and discuss the variations observed in the attenuation coefficients of Cu(I) phases. Semiquantitative synchrotron X-ray microtomography phase mapping requires no specific sample preparation, in particular polishing or surface finishing, and any material tearing or displacement is avoided. We also provide evidence for the noninvasive observation of phases rapidly altered upon preparation of real cross sections. The method can be applied when cross-sectioning even of minute fragments is impossible.

BACKGROUND: Biobank participants often do not understand much of the information they are provided as part of the informed consent process, despite numerous attempts at simplifying consent forms and improving their readability. We report the first assessment of biobank enrollees' comprehension under an "integrated consent" process, where patients were asked to enroll in a research biobank as part of their normal healthcare experience. A number of healthcare systems have implemented similar integrated consent processes for biobanking, but it is unknown how much patients understand after enrolling under these conditions. Methods: We recruited patients who enrolled in a biobank while in a healthcare setting when receiving ordinary care. We assessed knowledge of consent materials using 11 true/false questions drawn from a well-known biobank knowledge test. After reviewing the results from 114 participants, we revised the consent form and repeated the knowledge assessment with 144 different participants. Results: Participants scored poorly on the knowledge test in both rounds, with no significant differences in overall scores or individual items between the rounds. In Phase 1, participants answered 53% of the questions correctly, 25% incorrectly, and 22% "I don't know." In Phase 2, participants answered 53% of questions correctly, 24% incorrectly, and 23% "I don't know." Participants scored particularly poorly on questions about data sharing and accessing medical records. Conclusions: Enrollees under an integrated consent model had significant misunderstandings that persisted despite an attempt to improve information specifically about those topics in a consent form. These results raise challenges for current approaches that attribute misunderstanding to overly complex consent forms. They also suggest that the pressures of the clinic may compound other problems with patient understanding of biobank consent. As health systems increasingly blend research and care, they may need to rethink their approach to educating patients about participation in a biobank.

Though chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) are globally ubiquitous today, the timing, location, and manner of their domestication is contentious. Until recently, archaeologists placed the origin of the domestic chicken in northern China, perhaps as early as 8,000 years ago. Such evidence however complicates our understanding of how the chicken was domesticated because its wild progenitor - the red jungle fowl (Gallus gallus) - lives in tropical ecosystems and does not exist in northern China today or in the recent past. Increasingly, multiple lines of evidence suggest that many of the archaeological bird remains underlying this northern origins hypothesis have been misidentified. Here we analyze the mitochondrial DNA of some of the earliest purported chickens from the Dadiwan site in northern China and conclude that they are pheasants (Phasianus colchicus). Curiously, stable isotope values from the same birds reveal that their diet was heavy in agricultural products (namely millet), meaning that they lived adjacent to or among some of the earliest farming communities in East Asia. We suggest that the exploitation of these baited birds was an important adaptation for early farmers in China's arid north, and that management practices like these likely played a role in the domestication of animals - including the chicken - in similar contexts throughout the region.

Preservation variance of soil DNA is neglected in the literature, and exceptional cases exaggerate amplification capabilities. This study sought to amplify a short mitochondrial fragment (212 bp) specific to Sus scrofa domesticus from the soil surrounding decomposing pig remains from an open-air locale. Samples collected above the body at incremental distances after 145 days of initial placement yielded pig DNA. A secondary sampling was collected in 2017, approximately 768 days after burial. Inhibition tests corroborated that pig DNA was no longer present in the soil resulting in a loss of original DNA between 145 and 768 days. The results provide evidence that genetic material leaches out radially from the source and DNA fragments longer than 200 bp do not persist in soil for a relatively short timeframe in western Montana. The conclusions support the collection of soil in crime scene investigation procedures within the first few months of decomposition.
