RESUMO
Wireless sensing is a crucial technology for building smart cities, playing a vital role in applications such as human monitoring, route planning, and traffic management. Analyzing the data provided by wireless sensing enables the formulation of more scientific decisions. The wireless sensing of dynamic events is a significant branch of wireless sensing. Sensing the specific times and durations of dynamic events is a challenging problem due to the dynamic event information is concealed within static environments. To effectively sense the relevant information of event occurrence, we propose a wireless sensing method for dynamic events based on RSSI, named RSSI-WSDE. RSSI-WSDE utilizes variable-length sliding windows and statistical methods to process original RSSI time series, amplifying the differences between dynamic events and static environments. Subsequently, z-score normalization is employed to enhance the comparability of the sensing effects for different dynamic events. Furthermore, by setting the adaptive threshold, the occurrence of dynamic event is sensed and the relevant information is marked on the original RSSI time series. In this study, the sensing performance of RSSI-WSDE was tested in indoor corridors and outdoor urban road environments. The wireless sensing of dynamic events, including walking, running, cycling, and driving, was conducted. The experimental results demonstrate that RSSI-WSDE can accurately sense the occurrence of dynamic events, marking the specific time and duration with millisecond-level precision. Moreover, RSSI-WSDE exhibits robust performance in wireless sensing of dynamic events in both indoor and outdoor environments.
RESUMO
Estuarine wetlands are often located in economically developed and densely populated estuarine deltas, which are frequently disturbed and threatened by human activities. Reclamation, as an important way to alleviate the demand for local land resources, can lead to habitat destruction of natural coastal wetlands and weakening of ecological service functions, including carbon sink capacity. Research has shown that poor plant growth and weakened carbon fixation were the main reasons for the reduced carbon sequestration in a reclaimed wetland. This study aimed to examine the impacts of plant management on the improvement or restoration of carbon sink function in Chongming Dongtan reclaimed wetland, located in the Yangtze River Estuary, China. A management pattern that could effectively enhance the carbon sink function of the reclaimed wetland was selected based on analyses of the effects of different plant harvesting and management patterns (no harvesting, harvesting without returning to the field, direct straw return, and charred straw return) on the plant growth, carbon fixation, and soil respiration, combined with whole-life-cycle carbon footprint evaluation from straw harvest to field return. Compared with no harvesting, the aboveground biomass of direct straw return and charred straw return increased by about 12.3% and 15.5%, respectively (P < 0.05). Simultaneously, straw charring released the least amount of CO2 (1.94 µmol m-2 s-1) and inhibited degradation of soil organic carbon through affecting its microbial community structure. Moreover, considering the carbon budget of different patterns, the charred straw return pattern also most effectively enhanced the carbon sink function and thus could be used for subsequent improvement of carbon sequestration in reclaimed wetlands.

Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of Chinese herbal footbaths (CHF) as an adjunctive therapy in managing dysmenorrhea. Methods: Ten electronic databases were searched to identify eligible randomized clinical trials (RCTs) from inception until June 2023. Outcome measurements encompassed the total effective rate, visual analog scale (VAS) score of pain intensity, Cox menstrual symptom scale (CMSS) score, symptom score, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) syndrome scale, and any reported adverse events. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed with the Cochrane collaboration tool. Review Manager 5.3 software was employed for quantitative synthesis, and funnel plots were utilized to evaluate potential reporting bias. Results: Eighteen RCTs with 1,484 dysmenorrhea patients were included. The aggregated results suggested that the adjunctive CHF could significantly ameliorate dysmenorrhea, as evident from the improved total effective rate [risk ratio (RR) 1.18, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.12 to 1.23, P < 0.00001], VAS (MD 0.88, 95% CI: 0.68 to 1.09, P < 0.00001), CMSS (MD 3.61, 95% CI: 2.73 to 4.49, P < 0.00001), symptom score (SMD 1.09, 95% CI: 0.64 to 1.53, P < 0.00001), and TCM syndrome scale (MD 3.76, 95% CI: 2.53 to 4.99, P < 0.0001). In addition, CHF presented fewer adverse events with a better long-term effect (RR 1.34, 95% CI: 1.11 to 1.63, P < 0.01) and diminished recurrence rate (RR 0.19, 95% CI: 0.09 to 0.39, P < 0.0001). Conclusion: Current evidence implies that CHF may be an effective and safe adjunctive therapy for patients with dysmenorrhea. However, the methodological quality of the studies included was undesirable, necessitating further verification with more well-designed and high-quality multicenter RCTs. RESUMO
In order to achieve large-scale production of HSV-IgM (HSV1, HSV2) human-mouse chimeric antibody in vitro, the gene sequence of the corresponding hybridoma cell was harvested by RNA ligase-mediated rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RLM-RACE) technique to clone the chimeric antibody into eukaryotic expression vectors, and express the target proteins in CHO-S cells. At the same time, the screening process of stable cell lines was optimized, and the pressure conditions of pool construction stage and monoclonal screening stage were explored. Finally, the target protein was purified by protein L affinity purification method and the biological activity was detected. The recombinant IgM antibodies, HSV1 and HSV2, weighted at 899 kDa and 909 kDa respectively, were prepared. The optimal screening pressure was 20P200M (the first phase of pressure) and 50P1000M (the second phase of pressure). The final titer for the monoclonal expression of HSV1-IgM and HSV2-IgM was 1 620 mg/L and 623 mg/L, respectively. This study may facilitate the development of quality control products of HSV1 and HSV2 IgM series recombinant antibodies as well as efficient expression of IgM subtype antibodies in vitro.

The pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is complex. Still it remains unclear, which resulted in all efforts for AD treatments with targeting the pathogenic factors unsuccessful over past decades. It has been evidenced that the innate immune is strongly implicated in the pathogenesis of AD. However, the role of adaptive immune in AD remains mostly unknown and the results obtained were controversial. In the review, we summarized recent studies and showed that the molecular and cellular alterations in AD patients and its animal models involving T cells and B cells as well as immune mediators of adaptive immune occur not only in the peripheral blood but also in the brain and the cerebrospinal fluid. The risk factors that cause AD contribute to AD progress by affecting the adaptive immune, indicating that adaptive immunity proposes a pivotal role in this disease. It may provide a possible basis for applying immunotherapy in AD and further investigates whether the immunotherapies are effective or off-target?

Background: The application of flipped classroom (FC) pedagogy has recently become increasingly popular in Chinese pharmacy education. However, its effectiveness in improving student learning has not yet been assessed. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of teaching with such pedagogical approach by examining studies that compare the FC approach with the traditional lecture-based learning (LBL) module through a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: Seven databases, including the PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Scientific Journals Database, Chinese Wanfang database, and China Biomedical Literature Database, were searched from the inception to 30 June 2021, to identify eligible articles of randomized controlled studies. The primary outcomes included the theoretical and experimental test scores, and the secondary outcomes were the results from questionnaires about the number of students who preferred the FC or endorsed its improving effects on their learning enthusiasm, self-learning ability, thinking skills, communication skills, and learning efficiency. The quantitative synthesis was conducted with Revman V.5.3 software following the Cochrane Reviewer's Handbook guidelines and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement. Results: Eleven eligible studies published from 2017 to 2020 enrolling 1,200 students were included in this meta-analysis. The quantitative synthesis demonstrated that the FC module presented an overall more significant effectiveness over traditional LBL approach for Chinese pharmacy education in improving student academic performance as measured by theoretical test scores (SMD = 1.08, 95% CI: 0.60-1.56, p < 0.00001) and experimental test scores (MD = 6.62, 95% CI: 4.42-8.82, p < 0.00001). Further sub-group analysis revealed that the preferable effectiveness of FC was also evident in both theory-oriented (SMD = 0.77, 95% CI: 0.10-1.45, p < 0.00001) and experiments-oriented courses (MD = 6.52, 95% CI: 3.48-9.56, p < 0.00001) for both undergraduate (SMD = 0.84, 95% CI: 0.31-1.37, p < 0.00001) and 3-year junior-college students (MD = 8.17, 95% CI: 6.44-9.89, p < 0.00001). Additionally, analysis on the questionnaire outcomes revealed that more respondents preferred for FC and endorsed its improvement effects on developing students' learning enthusiasm, self-learning ability, thinking skills, communication skills, and learning efficiency. Conclusion: Current evidence suggests that FC pedagogical approach can effectively improve student learning outcomes and is applicable to Chinese pharmacy education.
RESUMO
Background: Acupuncture is safe and effective for functional dyspepsia (FD), while its efficacy varies among individuals. Predicting the response of different FD patients to acupuncture treatment in advance and therefore administering the tailored treatment to the individual is consistent with the principle of predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine (PPPM/3PM). In the current study, the individual efficacy prediction models were developed based on the support vector machine (SVM) algorithm and routine clinical features, aiming to predict the efficacy of acupuncture in treating FD and identify the FD patients who were appropriate to acupuncture treatment. Methods: A total of 745 FD patients were collected from two clinical trials. All the patients received a 4-week acupuncture treatment. Based on the demographic and baseline clinical features of 80% of patients in trial 1, the SVM models were established to predict the acupuncture response and improvements of symptoms and quality of life (QoL) at the end of treatment. Then, the left 20% of patients in trial 1 and 193 patients in trial 2 were respectively applied to evaluate the internal and external generalizations of these models. Results: These models could predict the efficacy of acupuncture successfully. In the internal test set, models achieved an accuracy of 0.773 in predicting acupuncture response and an R 2 of 0.446 and 0.413 in the prediction of QoL and symptoms improvements, respectively. Additionally, these models had well generalization in the independent validation set and could also predict, to a certain extent, the long-term efficacy of acupuncture at the 12-week follow-up. The gender, subtype of disease, and education level were finally identified as the critical predicting features. Conclusion: Based on the SVM algorithm and routine clinical features, this study established the models to predict acupuncture efficacy for FD patients. The prediction models developed accordingly are promising to assist doctors in judging patients' responses to acupuncture in advance, so that they could tailor and adjust acupuncture treatment plans for different patients in a prospective rather than the reactive manner, which could greatly improve the clinical efficacy of acupuncture treatment for FD and save medical expenditures. RESUMO
Alzheimer's disease as the most common age-related dementia affects more than 40 million people in the world, representing a global public health priority. However, the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is complex, and it remains unclear. Over the past decades, all efforts made in the treatments of AD, with targeting the pathogenic amyloid ß (Aß), neurofibrillary tangles, and misfolded tau protein, were failed. Recently, many studies have hinted that infection, and chronic inflammation that caused by infection are crucial risk factors for AD development and progress. In the review, we analyzed the role of infections caused by bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens in the pathogenesis of AD and its animal models, and explored the therapeutic possibility with anti-infections for AD. However, based on the published data, it is still difficult to determine their causal relationship between infection and AD due to contradictory results. We think that the role of infection in the pathogenesis of AD should not be ignored, even though infection does not necessarily cause AD, it may act as an accelerator in AD at least. It is essential to conduct the longitudinal studies and randomized controlled trials in humans, which can determine the role of infection in AD and clarify the links between infection and the pathological features of AD. Finding targeting infection drugs and identifying the time window for applying antibacterial or antiviral intervention may be more promising for future clinical therapeutic strategies in AD.

The Buxue Tongluo pill (BTP) is a self-made pill with the functions of nourishing blood, promoting blood circulation, dredging collaterals, and relieving pain. It consists of Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels, Pheretima aspergillum (E.Perrier), Panax notoginseng (Burk.) F. H. Chen, Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch.) Bge, and Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch. Various clinical practices have confirmed the therapeutic effect of BTP on osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH), but little attention has been paid to the study of its bioactive ingredients and related mechanisms of action. In this study, UPLC/MS-MS combined with GEO data mining was used to construct a bioactive ingredient library of BTP and a differentially expressed gene (DEG) library for ONFH. Subsequently, Cytoscape (3.7.2) software was used to analyze the protein-protein interaction between BTP and DEGs of ONFH to screen the key targets, and functional annotation analysis and pathway enrichment analysis were carried out. Finally, 34 bioactive compounds were screened, which acted on 1,232 targets. A total of 178 DEGs were collected, and 17 key genes were obtained after two screenings. By bioinformatics annotation on these key genes, a total of 354 gene ontology (GO) functional annotation analyses and 42 Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways were obtained. The present study found that GO and KEGG enrichment were mainly related to apoptosis, suggesting that BTP may exert an anti-ONFH effect by promoting osteoclast apoptosis. Experiments in vitro demonstrated that BTP could increase the mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and induce remarkable apoptosis in osteoclasts. Furthermore, we determined the apoptosis marker of cleaved(C)-caspase-3, bcl-2, and bax and found that BTP could upregulate the C-caspase-3 and bax expression in osteoclasts and decrease the expression of bcl-2, p-Akt, and p-PI3K in a dose-dependent manner, indicating that BTP could induce PI3K/Akt-mediated apoptosis in osteoclasts to treat ONFH. This study explored the pharmacodynamic basis and mechanism of BTP against ONFH from the perspective of systemic pharmacology, laying a foundation for further elucidating the therapeutic effects of BTP against ONFH.
RESUMO
Alzheimer's disease (AD), the predominant cause of late-life dementia, has a multifactorial etiology. Since there are few therapeutic options for symptomatic AD, research is increasingly focused on the identification of pre-symptomatic biomarkers. Recently, evaluation of neuron-derived exosomal markers has emerged as a promising novel approach for determining neuronal dysfunction. We aimed to identify novel neuron-derived exosomal markers that signify a transition from normal aging to Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and then to clinically established AD, a sequence we refer to as AD progression. By using a Tandem Mass Tag-based quantitative proteomic approach, we identified a total of 360 neuron-derived exosomal proteins. Subsequent fuzzy c-means clustering revealed two clusters of proteins displaying trends of gradually increasing/decreasing expression over the period of AD progression (normal to MCI to AD), both of which were mainly involved in immune response-associated pathways, proteins within these clusters were defined as bridge proteins. Several differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were identified in the progression of AD. The intersections of bridge proteins and DEPs were defined as key proteins, including C7 (Complement component 7), FERMT3 (Fermitin Family Member 3), CAP1 (Adenylyl cyclase-associated protein 1), ENO1 (Enolase 1), and ZYX (Zyxin), among which the expression patterns of C7 and ZYX were almost consistent with the proteomic results. Collectively, we propose that C7 and ZYX might be two novel neuron-derived exosomal protein markers, expression of which might be used to evaluate cognitive decline before a clinical diagnosis of AD is warranted.
RESUMO
In order to prepare human-mouse chimeric cytomegalovirus-immunoglobulin M (CMV-IgM) in vitro and study the effects of different signal peptides on the secretion of CMV-IgM, genes were amplified from hybridoma cell line using RLM-RACE to construct the expression vector of chimeric CMV-IgM. Then, the signal peptide of SigF itself was replaced by five different secreted signal peptides (SigA-SigE) by PCR method, and the CHO cell was chosen as host cell for in vitro expression. SDS-PAGE, SEC-HPLC and ELISA experiments were carried out to evaluate the protein expression level and immunoreactivity of the purified CMV-IgM. A 910 kDa recombinant protein was successfully prepared and signal peptides (SigA-SigE) had an increased expressed CMV-IgM, which were 6.72, 5.19, 1.44, 1.85 and 1.98 times higher than that of the CMV 6# cell signal peptide SigF. In summary, this work provides a theoretical basis for the development of human-mouse chimeric CMV-IgM, and a novel route to increase the expression level of CMV-IgM.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is commonly an age-associated dementia with neurodegeneration. The pathogenesis of AD is complex and still remains unclear. The inflammation, amyloid ß (Aß), and neurofibrillary tangles as well misfolded tau protein in the brain may contribute to the occurrence and development of AD. Compared with tau protein, Aß is less toxic. So far, all efforts made in the treatments of AD with targeting these pathogenic factors were unsuccessful over the past decades. Recently, many studies demonstrated that changes of the intestinal environment and gut microbiota via gut-brain axis pathway can cause neurological disorders, such as AD, which may be involved in the pathogenesis of AD. Thus, remodeling the gut microbiota by various ways to maintain their balance might be a novel therapeutic strategy for AD. In the review article, we analyzed the characteristics of gut microbiota and its dysbiosis in AD and its animal models and investigated the possibility of targeting the gut microbiota in the treatment of the patients with AD in the future.
RESUMO
Whole-genome sequencing of human adenovirus type 11 (HAdV-11) strain QS, isolated in China, was conducted, and its sequence was compared with the sequences of strains within the species of HAdVs. The HAdV-11 QS genome contains 34,755 nucleotides. Similar to the other HAdV subgenus B sequences, the HAdV-11 QS genome coded 37 functional proteins and could be divided into four early, two intermediate, and five late transcription regions. The amino acid sequences of the fiber and the hypervariable regions (HVRs) within the hexon gene of HAdV-11 QS were identical to the corresponding sequences of the HAdV-11a strain; further analyses that compared those amino acid sequences with the amino acid sequences of the HAdV species subgenus B:2 strains revealed that the highest degree of homology (>99.2%) existed between HAdV-11 QS and the prototypical HAdV-14 strain, except for a few coding sequences of HVRs within the hexon gene, DNA polymerase, pVI, and pre-terminal protein. This indicate that HAdV-11 strain QS, isolated in China, is a recombinant adenovirus of HAdV-14, and the recombination analyses also confirmed this finding. It is difficult to clarify the time and manner of the recombination, and further investigations are required to determine whether the emergence of recombination between HAdV-11a and HAdV-14 might increase virulence, thereby posing a new global challenge with regard to acute respiratory diseases in the near future.

An outbreak of acute respiratory tract infection occurred in Shanxi Province, China, from March to April 2006. Of the 254 patients affected by this outbreak, 247 patients were students of a senior high school; 1 of these patients died during the outbreak. Serological tests and blood culture revealed no evidence of bacterial infection. The results of direct reverse transcription-PCR or PCR performed with clinical specimens collected from the patients, including the sole patient who died, were positive for human adenoviruses (HAdVs) but negative for influenza virus, measles virus, rubella virus, mumps virus, parainfluenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus, and human enteroviruses. These findings were confirmed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for HAdV immunoglobulin A, the conventional neutralization test, and viral isolation and identification. Sequencing of the entire hexon gene revealed that HdAV type 11a (HAdV-11a) belonging to the B2 species of HAdV was the etiological agent responsible for the outbreak. However, both the analysis of the phylogenetic relationship and the similarity plot indicated that the sequence of the 3' end of the hexon gene outside the hypervariable regions the HAdV-11a strain isolated in this outbreak may be a recombinant with the sequence of the HAdV-14 strain of species B2. Although isolates of HAdV species B2 seldom cause respiratory infections, they may pose a new global challenge with regard to acute respiratory diseases; this possibility cannot be overlooked and should be carefully considered. Hence, the need to establish and improve both epidemiological and virological surveillance of HAdV infections in China should be emphasized.

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the results of a multicenter randomized controlled trial of the efficacy of verum acupuncture in treating acute migraine attacks. BACKGROUND: Acupuncture has been used in China for centuries to treat migraine headache. Convincing evidence of its efficacy in alleviating pain, however, has been inadequate to date. METHODS: A total of 218 patients with migraine were recruited for the study; 180 met the inclusion criteria; 175 completed the callback process and were randomized into 3 groups. One group received verum acupuncture while subjects in the other 2 groups were treated with sham acupuncture. Each patient received 1 session of treatment and was observed over a period of 24 hours. The main outcome measure was the differences in visual analog scale (VAS) scores before treatment and 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 hours after treatment. RESULTS: Significant decreases in VAS scores from baseline were observed in the fourth hour after treatment when VAS was measured in the patients who received either verum acupuncture or sham acupunctures (P < .05). The VAS scores in the fourth hour after treatment decreased by a median of 1.0 cm, 0.5 cm, and 0.1 cm in the verum acupuncture group, sham acupuncture group 1, and sham acupuncture group 2, respectively. Similarly, there was a significant difference in the change in VAS scores from baseline in the second hour after treatment among the 3 groups (P = .006). Moreover, at the second hour after treatment, only patients treated with verum acupuncture showed significant decreases in VAS scores from baseline by a median of 0.7 cm (P < .001). Significant differences were observed in pain relief, relapse, or aggravation within 24 hours after treatment as well as in the general evaluations among the 3 groups (P < .05). Most patients in the acupuncture group experienced complete pain relief (40.7%) and did not experience recurrence or intensification of pain (79.6%). CONCLUSION: Verum acupuncture treatment is more effective than sham acupuncture based on either Chinese or Western nonacupoints in reducing the discomfort of acute migraine. Verum acupuncture is also clearly effective in relieving pain and preventing migraine relapse or aggravation. These findings support the contention that there are specific physiological effects that distinguish genuine acupoints from nonacupoints.

BACKGROUND: Whether subgroups of functional dyspepsia (FD) should be treated with different approaches is controversially discussed in research. As our previous study has demonstrated the effect of acupuncture in FD treatment, we now further analyze the therapeutic effect of acupuncture in the treatment of postprandial distress syndrome (PDS) and epigastric pain syndrome (EPS). METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted in 465 eligible PDS patients and 241 EPS patients. 4 acupuncture groups (group A: specific acupoints along the stomach meridian; group B: non-specific acupoints along the stomach meridian; group C: alarm and transport acupoints; group D: specific acupoints along the gallbladder meridian) were compared with a non-acupoint sham acupuncture group and an itopride group. The patients were treated in 5 consecutive sessions per week for 4 weeks and were followed-up for 12 weeks afterwards. Primary outcome of the study was defined as response rate and symptom improvement as measured by the Symptom Index of Dyspepsia, while secondary outcome was designated as improvement in quality of life (QoL) as determined by the Nepean Dyspepsia Index. RESULTS: Symptoms of dyspepsia and QoL were improved from baseline in all groups. In EPS patients, no statistically significant differences could be observed in response rate (p = 0.239) and symptoms improvement (p = 0.344 for epigastric pain; p = 0.465 for epigastric burning). In contrast, PDS patients of the acupuncture group A showed higher response rate (53.2% vs. 19.7%, p<0.001; 53.2% vs. 35.1%, p = 0.025) and score change in postprandial fullness (1.01 vs. 0.27, p<0.001; 1.01 vs. 0.57, p<0.001), early satiation (0.81 vs. 0.21, p<0.001; 0.81 vs. 0.39, p=0.001), and QoL (14.5 vs. 4.33, p<0.001; 14.5 vs. 8.5, p<0.001) compared to the sham acupuncture and itopride group. CONCLUSIONS: FD patients with PDS responded better to the acupuncture therapies, especially at the specific acupoints along the stomach meridian. The positive therapeutic effect of acupuncture on PDS was correlated with the improvement in postprandial fullness. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrial.gov NCT00599677.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this systematic review is to investigate the effectiveness, efficacy and safety of multiple concomitant lifestyle modification therapies for patients with hypertension or prehypertension. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Electronic searches will be performed in the Cochrane Library, OVID, EMBASE, etc, along with manual searches in the reference lists of relevant papers found during electronic search. We will identify eligible randomised controlled trials utilising multiple lifestyle modifications to lower blood pressure. The control could be drug therapy, single lifestyle change or no intervention. Changes in systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure constitute primary end points, and secondary end points include the number of patients meeting the office target blood pressure, the number of patients reporting microvascular or macrovascular complications, etc. We will extract descriptive, methodological and efficacy data from identified randomised controlled trials (RCTs). We will calculate the relative risk for proportion of patients with a normal blood pressure in the experimental group. Dichotomous data will be analysed using risk difference and continuous data using weighted mean differences, both with 95% CI. We will use the χ(2) test and the I(2) statistic to assess heterogeneity. We will use the fixed effects model to compute the efficacy unless there is evidence of heterogeneity. If heterogeneity of effect size persists with respect to blood pressure change, further metaregression will be performed within groups. We will examine the potential for publication bias by using a funnel plot. DISSEMINATION: We will synthesise results from RCTs which provide more precise and accurate information on the effect of multiple lifestyle changes on blood pressure. The results of this review will increase the understanding of multiple lifestyle modifications for patients with hypertension or prehypertension. Lung cancer is the second most common human malignant disease and the leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. The effect of CYP1A1 IleVal polymorphism on susceptibility to lung cancer has been researched extensively over the last two decades. However, controversial results were obtained. To provide a more robust estimate of the effect, a meta-analysis was carried out. We systematically searched the PubMed database for studies published before August 2010, without language restriction. On the basis of our search criteria, a total of 32 studies (5126 patients and 6974 controls) were included in the meta-analysis. Overall, CYP1A1 IleVal polymorphism is associated with lung cancer risk (GG vs. AG+AA: odds ratio=1.61, 95% confidence interval: 1.19-2.17; GG vs. AA: odds ratio=1.70, 95% confidence interval: 1.23-2.35). Ethnic subgroup analyses showed that a significant association was found in Asians, but not in Africans, Caucasians, or other populations. In subgroup analyses by histology, the result is not reliable. In conclusion, this meta-analysis suggests that the CYP1A1 IleVal polymorphism might play a modest role in susceptibility to lung cancer, especially in Asians.
