OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate food impaction on three-dimensional (3D) printed models with periodontal ligament simulation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Based on a commercial typodont pair, 3D maxillary and mandibular models were created with no teeth and with tooth sockets that were 1 mm wider than the original ones from 24 to 27 or 34 to 37 for periodontal ligament simulation with vinyl polysiloxane impression material. In total, 35 pairs of 7 combinations, including maxillary/mandibular typodonts in occlusion with maxillary/mandibular 3D models with/without a distal gap of canines on 3D models (tooth 23 or 33) were mounted on hinge articulators and divided into seven groups (n = 5). Each sample experienced the same manual chewing simulation on a customized device. The proximal surfaces were photographed to measure the percentage of food impaction area using ImageJ software. RESULTS: Group with fixed maxillary and mandibular teeth showed more food impaction than other groups with significant differences in the average of maxilla and the average of all proximal areas. CONCLUSION: The flexibility of the periodontal ligament and the degree of freedom of the teeth in their sockets may contribute to the extent of food impaction in proximal spaces.

BACKGROUND: As global populations age and become susceptible to neurodegenerative illnesses, new therapies for Alzheimer disease (AD) are urgently needed. Existing data resources for drug discovery and repurposing fail to capture relationships central to the disease's etiology and response to drugs. OBJECTIVE: We designed the Alzheimer's Knowledge Base (AlzKB) to alleviate this need by providing a comprehensive knowledge representation of AD etiology and candidate therapeutics. METHODS: We designed the AlzKB as a large, heterogeneous graph knowledge base assembled using 22 diverse external data sources describing biological and pharmaceutical entities at different levels of organization (eg, chemicals, genes, anatomy, and diseases). AlzKB uses a Web Ontology Language 2 ontology to enforce semantic consistency and allow for ontological inference. We provide a public version of AlzKB and allow users to run and modify local versions of the knowledge base. RESULTS: AlzKB is freely available on the web and currently contains 118,902 entities with 1,309,527 relationships between those entities. To demonstrate its value, we used graph data science and machine learning to (1) propose new therapeutic targets based on similarities of AD to Parkinson disease and (2) repurpose existing drugs that may treat AD. For each use case, AlzKB recovers known therapeutic associations while proposing biologically plausible new ones. CONCLUSIONS: AlzKB is a new, publicly available knowledge resource that enables researchers to discover complex translational associations for AD drug discovery. Through 2 use cases, we show that it is a valuable tool for proposing novel therapeutic hypotheses based on public biomedical knowledge.

Laser ablation (LA) has been evaluated for the minimally invasive thermal treatment of various cancers, but conventional unidirectional endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided LA has limitations. Therefore, we developed a cylindrical laser diffuser to overcome the limitations of unidirectional EUS-guided LA. The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacies and safeties of EUS-guided LA using a novel cylindrical laser diffuser and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in vivo in swine pancreas. EUS-guided RFA (15 W, 30 s, 450 J) and cylindrical interstitial LA (CILA) (5 W, 90 s, 450 J) were applied to normal pancreatic tissue in six anesthetized pigs (three per group). Laboratory tests were performed at baseline, immediately after ablation (day 0), and 2 days after procedures (day 2). Two days after procedures, all pigs were sacrificed, and histopathological safety and efficacy assessments were performed. Technically, EUS-guided RFA and CILA were performed successfully in all cases. No major complications, including perforation or acute pancreatitis, occurred during the experiment in either group. All animals remained in excellent condition throughout the experimental period, and laboratory tests provided no evidence of a major complication. Average necrotic volumes in the RFA and CILA groups were 424.2 mm3 and 3747.4 mm3, respectively, and average necrotic volume was significantly larger in CILA group (p < 0.001). EUS-guided RFA and CILA had acceptable safety profiles in the normal swine pancreas model. Our findings indicate EUS-guided CILA has potential for the effective local treatment of pancreatic cancer as an alternative to EUS-guided RFA.

Detecting parcels accurately and efficiently has always been a challenging task when unloading from trucks onto conveyor belts because of the diverse and complex ways in which parcels are stacked. Conventional methods struggle to quickly and accurately classify the various shapes and surface patterns of unordered parcels. In this paper, we propose a parcel-picking surface detection method based on deep learning and image processing for the efficient unloading of diverse and unordered parcels. Our goal is to develop a systematic image processing algorithm that emphasises the boundaries of parcels regardless of their shape, pattern, or layout. The core of the algorithm is the utilisation of RGB-D technology for detecting the primary boundary lines regardless of obstacles such as adhesive labels, tapes, or parcel surface patterns. For cases where detecting the boundary lines is difficult owing to narrow gaps between parcels, we propose using deep learning-based boundary line detection through the You Only Look at Coefficients (YOLACT) model. Using image segmentation techniques, the algorithm efficiently predicts boundary lines, enabling the accurate detection of irregularly sized parcels with complex surface patterns. Furthermore, even for rotated parcels, we can extract their edges through complex mathematical operations using the depth values of the specified position, enabling the detection of the wider surfaces of the rotated parcels. Finally, we validate the accuracy and real-time performance of our proposed method through various case studies, achieving mAP (50) values of 93.8% and 90.8% for randomly sized and rotationally covered boxes with diverse colours and patterns, respectively.

BACKGROUND: Research on risk factors for neuropsychiatric adverse events (NAEs) in smoking cessation with pharmacotherapy is scarce. We aimed to identify predictors and develop a prediction model for risk of NAEs in smoking cessation with medications using Bayesian regularization. METHODS: Bayesian regularization was implemented by applying two shrinkage priors, Horseshoe and Laplace, to generalized linear mixed models on data from 1203 patients treated with nicotine patch, varenicline or placebo. Two predictor models were considered to separate summary scores and item scores in the psychosocial instruments. The summary score model had 19 predictors or 26 dummy variables and the item score model 51 predictors or 58 dummy variables. A total of 18 models were investigated. RESULTS: An item score model with Horseshoe prior and 7 degrees of freedom was selected as the final model upon model comparison and assessment. At baseline, smokers reporting more abnormal dreams or nightmares had 16% greater odds of experiencing NAEs during treatment (regularized odds ratio (rOR) = 1.16, 95% credible interval (CrI) = 0.95 - 1.56, posterior probability P(rOR > 1) = 0.90) while those with more severe sleep problems had 9% greater odds (rOR = 1.09, 95% CrI = 0.95 - 1.37, P(rOR > 1) = 0.85). The prouder a person felt one week before baseline resulted in 13% smaller odds of having NAEs (rOR = 0.87, 95% CrI = 0.71 - 1.02, P(rOR < 1) = 0.94). Odds of NAEs were comparable across treatment groups. The final model did not perform well in the test set. CONCLUSIONS: Worse sleep-related symptoms reported at baseline resulted in 85%-90% probability of being more likely to experience NAEs during smoking cessation with pharmacotherapy. Treatment for sleep disturbance should be incorporated in smoking cessation program for smokers with sleep disturbance at baseline. Bayesian regularization with Horseshoe prior permits including more predictors in a regression model when there is a low number of events per variable.

OBJECTIVES: Malignant biliary stricture is a ductal narrowing of the bile duct that is often diagnosed at an advanced stage, leading to difficulty in resection. The current study aims to evaluate the feasibility of endobiliary laser treatment by quantifying the extent of coagulative necrosis in tissue under various conditions. METHODS: Ex vivo and in vivo porcine bile tissues were used for endobiliary laser treatment to characterize the dosimetric responses of the tissue to various treatment conditions: power level, irradiation time, and number of treatments. 532 nm laser light was coupled with a balloon-integrated diffusing applicator (BDA) to deliver the laser light endoscopically for tissue coagulation. The coagulated regions (maximum length and depth) in the treated tissues were evaluated histologically for quantitative comparison. RESULTS: Dosimetric evaluations with ex vivo liver tissue confirmed that both maximum length and depth of coagulative necrosis (CN) increased with applied power and number of treatments. Ex vivo bile duct tests demonstrated that BDA-assisted laser treatment at 10 W for 12 s reproducibly yielded CN with a length of 5.8 ± 1.6 mm and a depth of 0.6 ± 0.2 mm. In vivo tests presented that endoscopic laser treatment using the BDA created CN on the ductal surface without any perforation. Microscopic examinations revealed that a dense inflammatory cell infiltration and eosinophilic area in the in vivo treated tissue. The extent of CN in the in vivo tissue was 40% longer and 120% deeper (length: 8.1 ± 0.7 mm; depth: 1.3 ± 0.2 mm), compared to that in the ex vivo tissue. CONCLUSION: BDA-assisted laser treatment could be a feasible option for endoscopic treatment of biliary stricture with uniform ablation at the circumference of bile duct. Further in vivo studies will be performed in a large number of stricture-developed porcine models to examine both efficacy and safety of the proposed endobiliary laser treatment for clinical translations.

BACKGROUND: Patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) who survive the rupture are at risk for delayed neurologic deficits and cerebral infarction. The ideal method(s) of surveillance for cerebral vasospasm, and the link between radiographic vasospasm and delayed neurologic deficits, remain controversial. We instituted a postbleed day 7 angiography protocol with the stated goals of identification of vasospasm, improving neurologic outcomes, and possibly lowering cost of care. METHODS: We conducted a quality improvement project in which we retrospectively analyzed consecutive cases of aSAH from a single institution over a 5-year period. Patients were excluded if they did not receive treatment for their aneurysm or were < 18 years of age. We analyzed demographic and outcome information for patients managed by protocolled angiography versus those who were managed by as-needed endovascular rescue therapy. Statistical tests were performed comparing means and proportions in both cohorts, as appropriate. RESULTS: In total, 223 patients were identified who met inclusion criteria. In total, 157 patients were identified in the protocolled day 7 angiography group, and 66 were in the nonprotocolled angiography group. Demographics were similar between the day 7 angiogram and medical management cohorts, except for a higher mean age among the latter group (p = 0.016). The protocolled angiography group underwent a significantly greater number of angiograms (p < 0.001) and had a significantly higher cost of hospitalization ($240,327 vs. $205,719, p = 0.03), with no significant difference in rate of cerebral infarction, length of intensive care unit stay, length of hospital stay, discharge location, or discharge modified Rankin Score. CONCLUSIONS: This cohort comparison analysis draws into question the practice of protocolized cerebral angiography in patients with aSAH.

Temperature sensors, such as Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) and thermocouple (TC), have been widely used for monitoring the interstitial tissue temperature during laser irradiation. The aim of the current study was to compare the performance of both FBG and TC in real-time temperature monitoring during endoscopic and circumferential laser treatment on tubular tissue structure. A 600-µm core-diameter diffusing applicator was employed to deliver 980-nm laser light (30 W for 90 s) circumferentially for quantitative evaluation. The tip of the TC was covered with a white tube (W-TC) in order to prevent direct light absorption and to minimize temperature overestimation. The temperature measurements in air demonstrated that the measurement difference in the temperature elevations was around 3.5 °C between FBG and W-TC. Ex vivo porcine liver tests confirmed that the measurement difference became lower (less than 1 °C). Ex vivo porcine esophageal tissue using a balloon-integrated catheter exhibited that both FBG and W-TC consistently showed a comparable trend of temperature measurements during laser irradiation (~2 °C). The current study demonstrated that the white tube-covered TC could be a feasible sensor to monitor interstitial tissue temperature with minimal overestimation during endoscopic laser irradiation. Further in vivo studies on gastroesophageal reflux disease will investigate the performance of the W-TC to monitor the temperature of the esophageal mucosa surface in real-time mode to warrant the safety of endoscopic laser treatment.

Introduction: Telepharmacy is widely known as the delivery of pharmacy care offered by registered pharmacists and pharmacies using telecommunication technologies to patients at a distance. We conducted a systematic review of the reported usages, benefits, and limitations of telepharmacy models worldwide to further clarify the pros and cons of a telepharmacy model. Methods: A total of 39 relevant articles was included after searching for articles with a fixed term on four databases, including PubMed, Virtual Health Library (VHL), Global Health Library (GHL), and Google Scholar, as of April 2021. Results: Our review suggested that telepharmacy has played an essential role in addressing pharmacist shortages and helping patients both safely and effectively administer medications in underserved areas. During the COVID-19 pandemic, remote dispensing and counseling are effective measures to avoid infection. Conclusion: Telepharmacy could potentially replace or complement pharmaceutical-related activities, facilitating future innovation in the health care industry.

Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms counteract the pathogenesis of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, aging, and cancer. Therefore, enhancing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory functions may help manage these pathological conditions. This study aimed to assess the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potentials of lipophilic fraction of Liriope platyphylla seeds (LLPS) using network pharmacology, molecular docking, and in vitro experiments. Here GC-MS analysis tentatively identified forty-three lipophilic compounds in LLPS. LLPS exhibited powerful antioxidant activity, according to the results from chemical-based antioxidant assays on DPPH, ABTS+, superoxide anion, hydrogen peroxide, nitric oxide, and hydroxyl radicals scavenging, lipid peroxidation, reducing antioxidant powers, and total antioxidant capacity. Additionally, LLPS enhanced cellular antioxidant capacity by inhibiting reactive oxygen species formation and elevating antioxidant enzyme levels, including catalase and heme oxygenase-1. Moreover, LLPS attenuated inflammatory response by reducing nitric oxide secretion and downregulating the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase, cyclooxygenase-2, and interleukin-1ß in lipopolysaccharide-treated macrophages. Network pharmacology and molecular docking analyses showed that key compounds in LPPS, particularly phytosterols and fatty acid esters, exerted antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties through regulating NFKB1, PTGS1, PTGS2, TLR4, PRKCA, PRKCD, KEAP1, NFE2L2, and NR1l2. Overall, these data suggest that LLPS may be a potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent for developing functional foods.

BACKGROUND: Little information is available on α- and ß-amylase activity and their associations with starch, sugars and other culinary qualities in sweetpotato. The present study aimed to assess sweetpotato storage root α- and ß-amylase activity in relation to starch, sugars, ß-carotene content and storage root flesh color. RESULTS: α- and ß-amylase activity (α-AA and ß-AA) were assayed from a Tanzania (T) × Beauregard (B) genetic mapping population in their uncured (raw), cured and stored (approximately 11 weeks) forms during 2016 and 2017. Ceralpha and Betamyl methods, with modifications to suit a high-throughput microplate assay format, were used to quantify α-AA and ß-AA, respectively. Storage root dry matter, starch, glucose, fructose, sucrose and ß-carotene content were predicted using near infrared reflectance spectroscopy. There was little relationship (r2 = 0.02-0.08, P ≤ 0.05 in 2016 and r2 = 0.05-0.11, P ≤ 0.05 in 2017) between α-AA and ß-AA. We observed negative linear associations between α-AA and dry matter content and generally no correlations between ß-AA and dry matter content. ß-AA and sugars were weakly positively correlated. ß-AA and ß-carotene content were positively correlated (r = 0.3-0.4 in 2016 and 0.3-0.5 in 2017). CONCLUSION: Generally, the correlation coefficient for amylase enzyme activity and sugar components of storage roots at harvest increased after curing and during post-harvest storage. The present study is a major step forward in sweetpotato breeding in terms of providing a better understanding of how α- and ß-amylase activity are inter-associated with several culinary quality attributes. © 2023 The Authors. BACKGROUND: Variability in sugar content between raw and cooked sweetpotato storage roots impact nutritional and dietary importance with implications for consumer preference. High-throughput phenotyping is required to breed varieties that satisfy consumer preferences. RESULTS: Near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) calibration curves were developed for analysing sugars in baked storage roots using 147 genotypes from a population segregating for sugar content and other traits. The NIRS prediction curves had high coefficients of determination in calibration (R2 c ) of 0.96 (glucose), 0.93 (fructose), 0.96 (sucrose), and 0.96 (maltose). The corresponding coefficients of determination for cross-validation (R2 cv ) were 0.92 (glucose), 0.89 (fructose), 0.96 (sucrose) and 0.93 (maltose) and were similar to the R2 c for all sugars measured. The ratios of the standard deviation of the reference set to the standard error of cross-validation were greater than three for all sugars. These results confirm the applicability of the NIRS curves in efficiently determining sugar content in baked sweetpotato storage roots. External validation was performed on an additional 70 genotypes. Coefficients of determination (r2 ) were 0.88 (glucose), 0.88 (fructose), 0.86 (sucrose) and 0.49 (maltose). The results were comparable to those found for the calibration and cross-validation in fructose, glucose, and sucrose, but were moderate for maltose due to the low variability of maltose content in the population. CONCLUSIONS: NIRS can be used for screening sugar content in baked sweetpotato storage roots in breeding programs and can be used to assist with the development of improved sweetpotato varieties that better meet consumer preferences. © 2023 The Authors. Global climate changes during the Miocene may have created ample opportunities for hybridization between members of tropical and subtropical biomes at the boundary between these zones. Yet, very few studies have explored this possibility. The Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau (YGP) in Southwest China is a biodiversity hotspot for vascular plants, located in a transitional area between the floristic regions of tropical Southeast Asia and subtropical East Asia. The genus Eriobotrya (Rosaceae) comprises both tropical and subtropical taxa, with 12 species recorded in the YGP, making it a suitable basis for testing the hypothesis of between-biome hybridization. Therefore, we surveyed the evolutionary history of Eriobotrya by examining three chloroplast regions and five nuclear genes for 817 individuals (47 populations) of 23 Eriobotrya species (including 19 populations of 12 species in the YGP), plus genome re-sequencing of 33 representative samples. We concluded that: (1) phylogenetic positions for 16 species exhibited strong cytonuclear conflicts, most probably due to ancient hybridization; (2) the YGP is a hotspot for hybridization, with 11 species showing clear evidence of chloroplast capture; and (3) Eriobotrya probably originated in tropical Asia during the Eocene. From the Miocene onwards, the intensification of the Eastern Asia monsoon and global cooling may have shifted the tropical-subtropical boundary and caused secondary contact between species, thus providing ample opportunity for hybridization and diversification of Eriobotrya, especially in the YGP. Our study highlights the significant role that paleoclimate changes probably played in driving hybridization and generating rich species diversity in climate transition zones.

Stereochemical quality control for pharmaceutical drug substance intermediates is a daunting task, especially considering the need to separate multiple stereoisomers simultaneously with low ppm level sensitivity. To address these challenges, we have successfully implemented chiral column screening, and developed an ultrasensitive liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) method to separate four stereoisomers including the API intermediate, its enantiomer, and two other diastereomers. Parameters such as mobile phase additives, MS fragmentor, and column temperature were optimized to achieve the desired selectivity and sensitivity. The method enabled stereoisomer detection with high sensitivity (2 ppm LOD and 5 ppm LOQ), good linearity, and desired spike recovery, and it has been successfully applied for stereoisomer quantitation in multiple large-scale batches and demonstrated chiral quality control of the drug substance intermediate.

OBJECTIVES: Tubular tissue, such as the bile duct and esophagus, often suffers from stenosis due to chronic inflammation or excessive contraction of smooth muscle. Laser treatment using a balloon catheter has been used to treat tubular tissue stenosis by mechanically expanding the tissue and irradiating laser light circumferentially on the tissue lumen. As the balloon is inflated with saline, the residual air in a delivery channel is often accumulated in the inflated balloon. Thus, the air trap may cause physical discontinuities at air-saline interface, leading to unpredictable and nonuniform photothermal interactions. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the optical-thermal effects of the air trap in the balloon on laser treatment of the tubular tissue by means of numerical simulations and experimental validations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A balloon-assisted diffusing applicator (BDA) was developed to inflate a balloon and deliver uniform and circumferential laser light. Before the balloon inflation, various numbers of deflations (0, 1, 2, 3, and 4) were applied to estimate the average amount of the air removed from the balloon. Ex vivo experiments using porcine liver duct were conducted with two deflation conditions (D0: no deflation for air trap and D3: three deflations for no air trap). The balloon was horizontally situated during laser irradiation to maintain the air trap at the same position in the balloon by minimizing gravity effect. Upon balloon inflation, 532 nm laser light was delivered through the BDA to the tissue (irradiance = 4 W/cm2 ) at 10 W for 45 seconds to assess the optical-thermal effects of the air trap on the ductal tissue. RESULTS: The size of the air trap was noticeably reduced with the number of deflations. The air trap volume in the balloon decreased to 0.5% of the total balloon volume after D3. Ex vivo results demonstrated that thicker coagulative necrosis (CN) for D0 near the air trap region in the tissue than bottom region that contact with saline, representing an asymmetric profile of CN in the tissue. D0 generated 17% thicker and nonuniform CN (overall CN thickness = 1.4 ± 0.7 mm), compared with D3 with no air trap (overall CN thickness = 1.2 ± 0.2 mm; p < 0.05). A threefold larger eccentricity (E) was found in D0 (49 ± 31%) than D3 (15 ± 13%; p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Both numerical simulations and experiments validated the effect of the air trap in a balloon on the distribution of CN in a tubular tissue during BDA-assisted laser treatment. Further in vivo studies will assess the current findings on the air trap for clinical translations of BDA-assisted laser treatment of tubular tissue stenosis.

Food quality certifications have been widely promoted for sustainable goals and addressing consumers' increasing concern for food safety. However, these mechanisms have achieved varied success in practice. Prior research notes the importance of certification and certifying agencies in making tangible an invisible process to build consumer trust in certified food. What we have yet to understand is if and how perceived trustworthiness of food actors, such as growers and retailers in that process, influences consumers' trust in food certification and their food choices. To extend the literature on food certification in a complex network environment, we examined consumer trust in three food certification schemes which represent two types (community-based versus third-party), two certification origins (international versus domestic), and two certification standards (organic versus Good Agricultural Practice or GAP). Data were collected via in-depth interviews with 27 participants in Vietnam. These participants have similar awareness of, access to and capability to afford organic food but differ in their food choice. This is the first study exploring consumers' perceptions of community-based certification in comparison with other third-party certifications in the same market. Our study shows that the variation in consumer trust in certifications depends on their perceived trustworthiness of the food system and its actors to deliver certified food. Findings reveal that the higher the level of trust in the certification, the lower the need for trust in food actors. Conversely, the lower the level of trust in the system, the higher the need for trust in food actors. Importantly, food chain governance, the mechanisms linking growers to retailers, increase consumers' trust in certified food. The study proposes two food governance frameworks to improve consumer trust in certification schemes in developing countries.

Common warts (verruca vulgaris) are the most commonly seen benign cutaneous tumors occurring in both males and females of various ages. However, warts on the hands and feet (plantar warts and palmar warts) often respond poorly to traditional treatments such as topical salicylic acid, cryotherapy, surgical excision, electrocautery, and bleomycin injection. Recently, the long-pulsed 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser (LPNYL) has attracted attention in the treatment of palmoplantar warts. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the LPNYL in the treatment of palmoplantar warts. We conducted a comparative cross-sectional descriptive study in 88 patients (49 males and 39 females) with palmoplantar warts. During the period from 2018 to 2020, the patients underwent up to three treatment sessions at intervals of 2-4 weeks between sessions. The LPNYL parameters comprised a spot size of 5 mm, 30 ms pulse width, 1 Hz repetition rate, and a fluence range of 140-180 J/cm2. The patient mean age was 29.0 ± 14.5 years (range, 4-66 years). Good results were seen in 72.9% (64/88) of patients. The remaining 27.1% (24/88) felt their treatment was unsuccessful. As for adverse events, 5 (5.6%) patients reported hemorrhagic blistering after treatment. At the 3- and 6-month follow-up assessments, no recurrence was seen (Figures 2-4). Our study showed that the LPNYL treatment was safe and effective in the majority of palmoplantar warts. The duration of treatment was shorter than most traditional methods; however, the limitations of this method are that the treatment required several sessions, the procedure was painful, and adverse events occurred in just over 5% of the patients.

Pancreatic cancer (PC) is a leading cause of cancer death and its incidence and mortality have shown an increasing trend. Despite improvements in outcomes, another treatment option is required for PC. Laser ablation (LA) has been evaluated for the treatment of various types of cancer. The aim of this study was to assess the safety and feasibility of a novel cylindrical light diffuser in a xenograft model of PC. This study was performed using a customized high-power laser system. PANC-1 cells and BALB/c mice were used for experiments at a laser power of 5 W for 40 to 200 s at five different energy levels (n = 30). There was no acute bleeding or major complication. Using the cylindrical light diffuser, tumors were irradiated with similar size in each energy group. A correlation between laser dose and tumor necrosis was observed. Pearson's correlation for the relation between the amount of necrosis area and laser ablation energy on day 3 was 0.78 (p < 0.01). No statistical difference of necrosis area was exhibited when the necrosis area of each harvested tumor analyzed by dividing into 5 specimens for each energy. The study demonstrates that LA treatment using a cylindrical light diffuser induced remarkable tumor necrosis at histopathologic examinations. Laser ablation dosage and tumor response were strongly correlated, and the ablation procedure resulted in homogeneous tissue necrosis. No adverse event was encountered. These findings suggest that the devised cylindrical light diffuser offers a safe and effective means of treating pancreatic cancer.

Sweet pepper fruits (Capsicum annuum L.) contain various nutrients and phytochemicals that enhance human health and prevent the pathogenesis of certain diseases. Here, we report that oral administration of orange sweet pepper juices prepared by a high-speed blender and low-speed masticating juicer reduces UVB-induced skin damage in SKH-1 hairless mice. Sweet pepper juices reduced UVB-induced skin photoaging by the regulation of genes involved in dermal matrix production and maintenance such as collagen type I α 1 and matrix metalloproteinase-2, 3, 9. Administration of sweet pepper juices also restored total collagen levels in UVB-exposed mice. In addition, sweet pepper juices downregulated the expression of pro-inflammatory proteins such as cyclooxygenase-2, interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-17, and IL-23, which was likely via inhibiting the NF-κB pathway. Moreover, primary antioxidant enzymes in the skin were enhanced by oral supplementation of sweet pepper juices, as evidenced by increased expression of catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase-2. Immunohistochemical staining showed that sweet pepper juices reduced UVB-induced DNA damage by preventing 8-OHdG formation. These results suggest that sweet pepper juices may offer a protective effect against photoaging by inhibiting the breakdown of dermal matrix, inflammatory response, and DNA damage as well as enhancing antioxidant defense, which leads to an overall reduction in skin damage.

Introduction: Telepharmacy, the application of information and communication technologies in healthcare services, has been adopted in many countries to provide patients with pharmaceutical care. However, it has yet to be widely used in Vietnam. This study was conducted to assess the current status of use and the factors associated with the willingness to use telepharmacy of pharmacists in Vietnam. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted from February to July 2021; 414 pharmacists were recruited to fill in an online survey. Results: Overall, 86.7% of participants have used telepharmacy application and 87.2% of them were willing to apply telepharmacy in pharmacy practice. According to our multivariate analysis, the level of readiness was associated with positive attitude (odds ratio [OR] = 4.67; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.26-9.66), and a good behavior (OR = 11.34; 95% CI: 3.84-33.45). Discussion: Developing a telepharmacy system with appropriate features is essential to meet the requirements of pharmacy practice amid the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
