RESUMO

This study was conducted to examine the experiences of nurses working during the COVID-19 pandemic using a qualitative descriptive research design. The study sample, determined using the criterion sampling method, consisted of nine nurses who work in a COVID-19 clinic of a pandemic hospital. The data were collected through interviews. The data were analyzed using content analysis. COREQ reporting guidelines were used in the study. From the content analysis, five main themes emerged in the study: "nurses' perceptions of the pandemic process", "nurses' feelings about the pandemic process", "difficulties nurses experienced in caring for patients with COVID-19", "professional achievements nurses gained while working in the COVID-19 clinic" and "nursing care practices and changes during the COVID-19 pandemic". The results of the study showed that during the pandemic, nurses experienced both positive and negative feelings/thoughts, faced various difficulties as well as several professional gains while providing care, and witnessed the changing face of self-care and patient care.

RESUMO

AIM: This study aimed to examine the effects of the creative drama method on first-year nursing students' perceptions of the image of nursing. BACKGROUND: Nursing students' perceptions of professional image can be affected by many processes during their transition to professional life. Therefore, supporting their development of a positive professional image at the beginning of their careers is necessary. DESIGN: This was a randomized controlled trial with a pre-test/post-test design and a control group. METHODS: The study was carried out at a nursing school located in the Eastern Black Sea region of Türkiye. The sample of this study consisted of 77 participants, with 38 in the experimental group and 39 in the control group. The subjects of professional image and the image of nursing were explained to the control group using presentations and case analysis and to the experimental group using the creative drama method. Research data were collected with the Student Information Form and Nursing Image Scale. RESULTS: The post-test scores obtained by the control group after receiving traditional education were higher than the pre-test scores. The post-test scores obtained by the experimental group after receiving education based on creative drama were higher than the pre-test scores. The scores of the experimental group were significantly higher after the educational intervention. CONCLUSION: Creative drama is far more effective in nursing image education for first-year nursing students than presentation and case analysis, which are conventional education methods. Creative drama can be used as an effective method to develop positive perceptions of nursing.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Postmortem care is one of the most difficult aspects of the nursing profession and is frequently given in healthcare settings today. It is important to provide appropriate teaching experiences in order to prepare nursing students for their future professional roles in postmortem care. OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to examine the effect of a creative drama method on nursing students' postmortem care knowledge and skill levels, learning retention, and satisfaction with the education method. DESIGN: A randomized controlled model with a pretest-posttest control group was used in this study. SETTINGS: One university school of nursing in Turkey. PARTICIPANTS: The sample consisted of 70 nursing students. METHOD: Information about postmortem care was shared with the control group using the classical education method of lectures and demonstration techniques, while the experimental group was taught with a creative drama method. Research data were collected with the Descriptive Characteristics Form, Postmortem Care Knowledge Test, Postmortem Care Skills Checklist, and Education Methods Satisfaction Survey. RESULTS: It was observed that the postmortem care education provided to both experimental and control group was effective in improving the knowledge and skill levels of nursing students regarding postmortem care (p < 0.05). However, the knowledge and skill levels of the experimental group regarding postmortem care, learning retention, and level of satisfaction with the education method were higher than those of the control group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Creative drama was thus found to be a more effective method than the classical education method in providing postmortem care education to nursing students. In addition, it was observed that the students were more satisfied with the education given with creative drama.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of pressure ulcer prevention training for the relatives of palliative care inpatients. METHODS: This study had a pretest-post-test design with parallel groups and a randomised control group, and it was conducted with 70 (experimental n=35, control n=35) patient relatives. A personal information form and Pressure Ulcer Knowledge Test were used as data collection tools. Parametric tests were performed for statistical analysis. RESULTS: The pressure ulcer prevention training given to the relatives of palliative care patients in the experimental group was significantly effective in increasing their level of knowledge about these ulcers (p<0.05). However, the routine ward discharge training given to the relatives of palliative care patients in the control group was not significantly effective in increasing their level of knowledge about them (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Specialised training regarding pressure ulcers should be given to the relatives of patients receiving palliative care. It is important that the educational materials used in this trainings appeal to all sensory organs in order to improve the educational outcomes. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT05979402.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to implement training to increase the perineal care knowledge of relatives caring for incontinent palliative care patients and to examine the effectiveness of this training. METHODS: This study was designed as a pretest-post-test randomised controlled trial. The study included 84 relatives of patients with incontinence (experimental group, n=42; control group, n=42). The experimental group was given one-on-one face-to-face training on perineal care for patients with incontinence, while the control group was given training through a brochure. Data were collected using a personal information form and the Perineal Care Knowledge Test. The Wilcoxon signed-rank and Mann-Whitney U tests were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: The difference between the pretest and post-test scores of the experimental group was found to be statistically significant (p<0.05), while the difference between the pretest and post-test scores of the control group was not significant (p>0.05). The post-test scores of the experimental group were higher than those of the control group (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: It was found that one-on-one face-to-face perineal care training was a more effective method for increasing the perineal care knowledge of patients' relatives than brochures.

RESUMO

Nutrition is a basic need and is crucial for the persistence of good health. This awareness has increased since December 2019 during the pandemic that the world is still facing. The importance of nutrition in infectious diseases was emphasized but the relationship between the severity of symptoms and nutrition status of individuals was not examined. This study compared the nutrition status of patients with COVID-19 admitted to the emergency service and the clinical severity of the disease. Based on the nutrition status of the 337 patients included in the study, 87.2% (294) of the patients were in the low-risk group while 12.8% (43) were in the high-risk group in terms of malnutrition. In the analysis conducted to examine the effect of nutrition on the severity of disease, the relationship between NRS 2002 and dyspnea, cough, weakness, fever, and other symptoms was statistically significant. It was concluded that healthy nutrition is crucial during the pandemic, and it is necessary to consider nutrition improvement as a way to cope with emerging viral infections.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: This study identifies depression, anxiety and state guilt of Turkish citizens kept in quarantine for 14 days in an institution where they are brought upon their request within the scope of infection control measures and the related affecting risk factors during the coronavirus pandemic. METHODS: A total of 385 individuals under quarantine for 14 days between the dates of April 20-May 21, 2020 were included in the study. The data were collected using a socio-demographic data form (age, gender, employment status, having sleep disorder, duration of television review and Internet use, etc.), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Guilt Scale (GS) after the participants were informed about the study objective and they signed the informed consent form. RESULTS: A total of 385 participants, 84 of whom were women, with a mean age of 35.32±11.7 were included in the study. According to BAI and BDI, 14.5% of the participants had anxiety and 17.1% had depression symptoms. The regression analysis found that female gender, having sleep disorder, using Internet for 8 hours or more and having chronic illness were risk factors for anxiety; while female gender, being aged 18-30, having sleep disorder, having psychiatric illness, and using Internet for 8 hours or more were risk factors for depression. The state guilt did not show any significant correlation with any socio-demographic factor. CONCLUSION: Female gender, being young, having a history of psychiatric illness, having chronic illness, having sleep disorder, using Internet for 8 hours or more were found to be risk factors for more anxiety and depression symptoms. It is important to educate people about the methods of how to maintain healthy sleep during quarantine, to effectively fight against the excessive circulation of misinformation and to provide sufficient medical care to those with psychiatric and chronic diseases, being more vulnerable against infections.
