BACKGROUND: In recent years, accelerated transcranial magnetic stimulation (aTMS) has been developed, which has a shortened treatment period. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and long-term maintenance effects of aTMS in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS: We systematically searched online databases for aTMS studies in patients with MDD published before February 2023 and performed a meta-analysis on the extracted data. RESULTS: Four randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and 10 before-and-after controlled studies were included. The findings showed that depression scores significantly decreased following the intervention (SMD = 1.80, 95% CI (1.31, 2.30), p < 0.00001). There was no significant difference in antidepressant effectiveness between aTMS and standard TMS (SMD = -0.67, 95% CI (-1.62, 0.27), p = 0.16). Depression scores at follow-up were lower than those directly after the intervention based on the depression rating scale (SMD = 0.22, 95% CI (0.06, 0.37), p = 0.006), suggesting a potential long-term maintenance effect of aTMS. Subgroup meta-analysis results indicated that different modes of aTMS may have diverse long-term effects. At the end of treatment with the accelerated repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (arTMS) mode, depressive symptoms may continue to improve (SMD = 0.29, 95% CI (0.10, 0.49), I2 = 22%, p = 0.003), while the accelerated intermittent theta burst stimulation (aiTBS) mode only maintains posttreatment effects (SMD = 0.01, 95% CI (-0.45, 0.47), I2 = 66%, p = 0.98). CONCLUSIONS: Compared with standard TMS, aTMS can rapidly improve depressive symptoms, but there is no significant difference in efficacy. aTMS may also have long-term maintenance effects, but longer follow-up periods are needed to assess this possibility. Obstructive sleep apnea is a common sleep breathing disorder related to autonomic nervous function disturbances. Heart rate variability is an important non-invasive indicator of autonomic nervous system function. The PubMed, Embase, Medline and Web of Science databases were systematically searched for English literature comparing patients with obstructive sleep apnea with controls up to May 2021. Heart rate variability outcomes, including integrated indices (parasympathetic function and total variability), time domain indices (the standard deviation of NN intervals and the root mean square of the successive differences between normal heartbeats) and frequency domain indices (high-frequency, low-frequency, very-low-frequency and the ratio of low-frequency to high-frequency) were derived from the studies. Twenty-two studies that included 2565 patients with obstructive sleep apnea and 1089 healthy controls were included. Compared with controls, patients with obstructive sleep apnea exhibited significantly reduced parasympathetic function. For the obstructive sleep apnea severity subgroup meta-analysis, patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea had significantly lower parasympathetic function, high-frequency, root mean square of the successive differences between normal heartbeats and standard deviation of NN intervals, and higher low-frequency and ratios of low-frequency to high-frequency. However, only the ratio of low-frequency to high-frequency was significantly higher in patients with moderate obstructive sleep apnea than in controls. Finally, for the collection time analysis, patients with obstructive sleep apnea had significantly higher low-frequency and ratio of low-frequency to high-frequency at night, significantly lower parasympathetic function, high-frequency, root mean square of the successive differences between normal heartbeats and standard deviation of NN intervals, and a higher ratio of low-frequency to high-frequency during the day than controls. Autonomic function impairment was more serious in patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea. During sleep, low-frequency can well reflect the impairment of autonomic function in obstructive sleep apnea, and the ratio of low-frequency to high-frequency may play an important role in obstructive sleep apnea diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) proposed COVID-19 vaccination as an emergent and important method to end the COVID-19 pandemic. Since China started vaccination programs in December 2020, vaccination has spread to provinces and municipalities nationwide. Previous research has focused on people's vaccination willingness and its influencing factors but has not examined vaccination behavior. We examine the effectiveness of psychosocial factors in predicting vaccination behavior. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was performed among Chinese adults on 8 May and 4 June 2021. The statistical analysis of the data included univariate analysis, receiver operator characteristics (ROC) analysis and ordinal multiclassification logistic regression model analysis. RESULTS: Of the 1300 respondents, 761 (58.5%) were vaccinated. Univariate analysis showed that a high education level and good subjective health status were protective factors for vaccination behavior, while suffering from chronic diseases was a risk factor. ROC analysis showed that subjective health status (AUC = 0.625, 95% CI: 0.594-0.656, P < 0.001) was the best predictor of vaccination behavior. Logistic regression analysis with subjective health status as a dependent variable indicated that older age, female sex, depression, neurasthenia, obsession, hypochondriasis and chronic disease were significant risk factors, while positive coping tendencies were a significant protective factor. CONCLUSION: Our study found a simple and effective marker, subjective health status, that can predict vaccination behavior. This finding can guide future epidemic prevention work.

OBJECTIVES: Genome-wide association studies have identified a significant risk gene, CACNA1C, for schizophrenia. In this study, we comprehensively investigated a large set of CACNA1C single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to identify the replicable risk alleles for schizophrenia and explore their biological functions. METHODS: One Jewish (1044 cases vs 2052 controls), one European (1350 cases vs 1378 controls) and one exploratory African American samples (98 cases vs 20 controls) were analyzed to identify replicable single-nucleotide polymorphism-schizophrenia associations. The regulatory effects of risk alleles on CACNA1C messenger RNA expression were examined. The most robust risk tagSNP (rs1006737) was meta-analyzed on 17 studies (74,122 cases vs 109,062 controls), and associated with the gray matter volumes of seven subcortical structures in 38,258 Europeans, and the surface areas and thickness of 34 cortical regions in 33,992 Europeans and 2944 non-Europeans. RESULTS: Forty-seven replicable risk single-nucleotide polymorphisms, including a 20-single-nucleotide polymorphism haplotype block, were identified in our samples (1.8 × 10-4 ⩽ p ⩽ 0.049). This variant block was consistently associated with schizophrenia across four independent Psychiatric Genomics Consortium cohorts (79,645 cases vs 109,590 controls; 2.5 × 10-17 ⩽ p ⩽ 0.017). This block showed significant expression quantitative trait loci in three independent European brain cohorts (5.1 × 10-12 ⩽ p ⩽ 8.3 × 10-3) and could be tagged by the most significant risk single-nucleotide polymorphism rs1006737. The minor allele A of rs1006737 significantly increased risk for schizophrenia across the Jewish and European samples (p = 0.029 and 0.004, respectively), and this association was highly significant in the meta-analysis (p = 1.62 × 10-42). This allele also significantly altered the CACNA1C messenger RNA expression in five brain regions (5.1 × 10-12 ⩽ p ⩽ 0.05), decreased the gray matter volume of thalamus (p = 0.010), the surface area of isthmus cingulate cortex (p = 0.013) and the thickness of transverse temporal and superior temporal sulcus cortexes (0.005 ⩽ p ⩽ 0.043). CONCLUSION: We identified an independent, replicable, functional, and significant risk variant block at CACNA1C for schizophrenia, which could be tagged by the most robust risk marker rs1006737, suggesting an important role of CACNA1C in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia.

Neuroimaging findings suggest that the amygdala plays a primary role in both the psychopathology of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and poor sleep quality, which are common in trauma survivors. However, the neural mechanisms of these two problems in trauma survivors associated with amygdala remain unclear. In the current study, we aimed to explore the role of functional connectivity of amygdala subregions in both PTSD symptoms and poor sleep quality. A total of 94 trauma-exposed subjects were scanned on a 3T MR system using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Both Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale scores were negatively correlated with the resting-state functional connectivity between the left basolateral amygdala-left medial prefrontal cortex and the right basolateral amygdala-right medial prefrontal cortex. Our findings suggest a shared amygdala subregional neural circuitry underlying the neuropathological mechanisms of PTSD symptoms and poor sleep quality in trauma survivors.

BACKGROUND: Evidence links major depressive disorder (MDD) with aging, but it's unclear if MDD accelerates aging and what factors mediate this transition. METHODS: Two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses were applied to estimate the causal association between MDD and frailty index (FI), telomere length (TL), and appendicular lean mass (ALM) from available genome-wide association studies in populations of European ancestry. Furthermore, we conducted mediation MR analyses to assess the mediating effects of 31 lifestyle factors or diseases on the causal relationship between MDD and aging. RESULTS: MDD was significantly causally associated with increased FI (ßIVW = 0.23, 95 % CI = 0.18 to 0.28, p = 1.20 × 10-17), shorter TL (ßIVW = -0.04, 95 % CI = -0.07 to -0.01, p = 0.01), and decreased ALM (ßIVW = -0.07, 95 % CI = -0.11 to -0.03, p = 3.54 × 10-4). The mediation analysis through two-step MR revealed smoking initiation (9.09 %), hypertension (6.67 %) and heart failure (5.36 %) mediated the causal effect of MDD on FI. Additionally, alcohol use disorders and alcohol dependence on the causal relationship between MDD and TL were found to be 17.52 % and 17.13 % respectively. LIMITATIONS: Confounding, statistical power, and Euro-centric focus limit generalization. CONCLUSION: Overall, individuals with MDD may be at a higher risk of experiencing premature aging, and this risk is partially influenced by the pathways involving smoking, alcohol use, and cardiovascular health. It underscores the importance of early intervention and comprehensive health management in individuals with MDD to promote healthy aging and overall well-being.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are psychiatric disorders that can present with overlapping symptoms and shared risk factors. However, the extent to which these disorders share common underlying neuropathological mechanisms remains unclear. To investigate the similarities and differences in task-evoked brain activation patterns between patients with PTSD and MDD. METHODS: A coordinate-based meta-analysis was conducted across 35 PTSD studies (564 patients and 543 healthy controls) and 125 MDD studies (4049 patients and 4170 healthy controls) using anisotropic effect-size signed differential mapping software. RESULTS: Both PTSD and MDD patients exhibited increased neural activation in the bilateral inferior frontal gyrus. However, PTSD patients showed increased neural activation in the right insula, left supplementary motor area extending to median cingulate gyrus and superior frontal gyrus (SFG), and left fusiform gyrus, and decreased neural activation in the right posterior cingulate gyrus, right middle temporal gyrus, right paracentral lobule, and right inferior parietal gyrus relative to MDD patients. CONCLUSION: Our meta-analysis suggests that PTSD and MDD share some similar patterns of brain activation, but also have distinct neural signatures. These findings contribute to our understanding of the potential neuropathology underlying these disorders and may inform the development of more targeted and effective treatment and intervention strategies. Moreover, these results may provide useful neuroimaging targets for the differential diagnosis of MDD and PTSD.

BACKGROUND: Mindfulness helps reduce negative emotions, but its ability to prevent postpartum psychological problems remains unclear. This study aimed to assess the effects of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) during pregnancy on postpartum mental health, especially postpartum depression. METHODS: Online databases regarding the effect of mindfulness on pregnancy were searched and a meta-analysis was conducted. RESULTS: Eight randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and a self-controlled study were included. We found consistent results showing that MBIs significantly improve the depressive symptoms of all pregnant women in both the case-control (SMD = -0.90, 95 % CI (-2.71, -1.82), p = 0.01) and self-control (SMD = 1.24, 95 % CI (0.37, 2.11), p = 0.005) comparisons. However, MBIs were ineffective for high-risk pregnant women with severe depressive symptoms before delivery in both the case-control (SMD = -1.07, 95 % CI (-3.40, 1.25), p = 0.36) and self-control comparisons (SMD = 2.10, 95 % CI (-0.26, 4.47), p = 0.08). Furthermore, MBIs did not have significant advantages over other intervention methods (SMD = -0.45, 95 % CI (-1.17, 0.28), p = 0.23). LIMITATIONS: There were few high-quality RCTs, and the sample size was small. CONCLUSION: MBIs can relieve maternal depressive and anxiety symptoms, especially for the prevention of postpartum depression in healthy pregnant women. However, MBIs do not have significant advantages over other interventions and may not be useful for all pregnant women. These findings contribute to the optimization of perinatal mental health intervention programs and the improvement of pregnancy outcomes, playing an important guiding role in clinical decision-making.

Immune dysregulated cytokine production is involved in mental diseases. However, the results are inconsistent and the pattern of cytokine alterations has not been compared across disorders. We performed a network impact analysis of cytokine levels for different psychiatric disorders including schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and obsessive compressive disorder to evaluate their clinical impact across conditions. Studies were identified by searching the electronic databases up to 31/05/2022. A total of eight cytokines, together with (high-sensitivity) C-reactive proteins (hsCRP/CRP) were included in the network meta-analysis. The levels of proinflammatory cytokines, hsCRP/CRP and interleukin 6 (IL-6) were significantly increased in patients with psychiatric disorders when compared to controls. IL-6 showed no significant difference among comparisons between disorders according to the network meta-analysis. Interleukin 10 (IL-10) is significantly increased in patients with bipolar disorder compared to major depressive disorder. Further, the level of interleukin-1 beta (IL-1ß) was significantly increased in major depressive disorder as compared to bipolar disorder. The level of interleukin 8 (IL-8) varied among these psychiatric disorders based on the network meta-analysis result. Overall, abnormal cytokine levels were found in psychiatric disorders, and some of the cytokines displayed differential characteristics in these disorders, especially IL-8, pointing to a role as potential biomarkers for general and differential diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: Multiple studies have indicated that electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) could increase brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) concentrations in patients with different mental disorders. The aim of this synthesis was to evaluate post-ECT BDNF concentrations in patients with various mental disorders. METHODS: The Embase, PubMed and Web of Science databases were systematically searched for studies in English comparing BDNF concentrations before and after ECT through 11/2022. We extracted the pertinent information from the included studies and evaluated their quality. The standardized mean difference (SMD) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) was calculated to quantify BDNF concentration differences. RESULTS: In total, 35 studies assessed BDNF concentrations in 868 and 859 patients pre and post-ECT treatment, respectively. Post-ECT-treatment BDNF concentrations were significantly higher than the pretreatment concentrations (Hedges'g = -0.50, 95% CI (-0.70, -0.30), heterogeneity I2 = 74%, p < 0.001). The analysis that combined both ECT responders and non-responders demonstrated a marked increase in total BDNF levels subsequent to ECT treatment (Hedges'g = -0.27, 95% CI (-0.42, -0.11), heterogeneity I2 = 40%, p = 0.0007). CONCLUSION: Irrespective of the effectiveness of ECT, Our study shows that peripheral BDNF concentrations increase significantly after the entire course of ECT, which may enhance our comprehension of the interplay between ECT treatment and BDNF levels. However, BDNF concentrations were not associated with the effectiveness of ECT, and abnormal concentrations of BDNF may be linked to the pathophysiological process of mental illness, necessitating more future research.

Whether remitted major depressive disorder (rMDD) and MDD present common or distinct neuropathological mechanisms remains unclear. We performed a meta-analysis of task-related whole-brain functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) using anisotropic effect-size signed differential mapping software to compare brain activation between rMDD/MDD patients and healthy controls (HCs). We included 18 rMDD studies (458 patients and 476 HCs) and 120 MDD studies (3746 patients and 3863 HCs). The results showed that MDD and rMDD patients shared increased neural activation in the right temporal pole and right superior temporal gyrus. Several brain regions, including the right middle temporal gyrus, left inferior parietal, prefrontal cortex, left superior frontal gyrus and striatum, differed significantly between MDD and rMDD. Meta-regression analyses revealed that the percentage of females with MDD was positively associated with brain activity in the right lenticular nucleus/putamen. Our results provide valuable insights into the underlying neuropathology of brain dysfunction in MDD, developing more targeted and efficacious treatment and intervention strategies, and more importantly, providing potential neuroimaging targets for the early screening of MDD.

BACKGROUND: Heart rate variability (HRV) in patients with emotional disorders and healthy controls (HCs) has been investigated in many studies but the difference between these emotional disorders was unclear. METHODS: The PubMed, Embase, Medline and Web of Science databases were systematically searched for studies published in English that compared HCs with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), major depressive disorder (MDD), panic disorder (PD) patients in HRV. We conducted a network meta-analysis to compare HRV in patients with GAD, MDD, PD and HCs. HRV outcomes, including time domain indices (the standard deviation of NN intervals (SDNN) and the root mean square of the successive differences between normal heartbeats (RMSSD)), and frequency domain indices (High-frequency (HF), Low-frequency (LF) and the ratio of LF to HF (LF/HF)) were obtained. A total of 4008 participants from 42 studies were included. RESULTS: The results of pairwise meta-analysis showed that compared with controls, GAD, PD and MDD patients exhibited significantly reduced HRV. Similar findings were also confirmed in network meta-analysis. The most important finding from network meta-analysis was that GAD patients had significantly lower SDNN than PD patients (SMD = -0.60, 95 % CI [-1.09, -0.11]). CONCLUSION: Our findings provided a potential objective biological marker to distinguish between GAD and PD. In the future, a large sample of research is needed to directly compare HRV of various mental disorders, which is crucial for finding biomarkers to distinguish them.

OBJECTIVES: Numerous genome-wide association studies have identified CACNA1C as one of the top risk genes for schizophrenia. As a necessary post-genome-wide association study (GWAS) follow-up, here, we focused on this risk gene, carefully investigated its novel risk variants for schizophrenia, and explored their potential functions. METHODS: We analyzed four independent samples (including three European and one African-American) comprising 5648 cases and 6936 healthy subjects to identify replicable single nucleotide polymorphism-schizophrenia associations. The potential regulatory effects of schizophrenia-risk alleles on CACNA1C mRNA expression in 16 brain regions (n = 348), gray matter volumes (GMVs) of five subcortical structures (n = 34 431), and surface areas and thickness of 34 cortical regions (n = 36 936) were also examined. RESULTS: A novel 17-variant block across introns 36-45 of CACNA1C was significantly associated with schizophrenia in the same effect direction across at least two independent samples (1.8 × 10-4 ≤ P ≤ 0.049). Most risk variants within this block showed significant associations with CACNA1C mRNA expression (1.6 × 10-3 ≤ P ≤ 0.050), GMVs of subcortical structures (0.016 ≤ P ≤ 0.048), cortical surface areas (0.010 ≤ P ≤ 0.050), and thickness (0.004 ≤ P ≤ 0.050) in multiple brain regions. CONCLUSION: We have identified a novel and functional risk variant block at CACNA1C for schizophrenia, providing further evidence for the important role of this gene in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Neuropsychiatric disorders are highly heritable and have overlapping genetic underpinnings. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the gene CACNA1C have been associated with several neuropsychiatric disorders, across multiple genome-wide association studies. METHOD: A total of 70,711 subjects from 37 independent cohorts with 13 different neuropsychiatric disorders were meta-analyzed to identify overlap of disorder-associated SNPs within CACNA1C. The differential expression of CACNA1C mRNA in five independent postmortem brain cohorts was examined. Finally, the associations of disease-sharing risk alleles with total intracranial volume (ICV), gray matter volumes (GMVs) of subcortical structures, cortical surface area (SA), and average cortical thickness (TH) were tested. RESULTS: Eighteen SNPs within CACNA1C were nominally associated with more than one neuropsychiatric disorder (P < .05); the associations shared among schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and alcohol use disorder survived false discovery rate correction (five SNPs with P < 7.3 × 10-4 and q < 0.05). CACNA1C mRNA was differentially expressed in brains from individuals with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and Parkinson's disease, relative to controls (three SNPs with P < .01). Risk alleles shared by schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, substance dependence, and Parkinson's disease were significantly associated with ICV, GMVs, SA, or TH (one SNP with P ≤ 7.1 × 10-3 and q < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Integrating multiple levels of analyses, we identified CACNA1C variants associated with multiple psychiatric disorders, and schizophrenia and bipolar disorder were most strongly implicated. CACNA1C variants may contribute to shared risk and pathophysiology in these conditions.

BACKGROUND: Many structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies have used voxel-based morphometry (VBM) to identify gray matter abnormalities in patients with chronic primary pain (CPP), but the findings have been inconsistent. OBJECTIVES: To identify (a) gray matter differences between CPP patients or female patients and healthy individuals and (b) the effects of symptom duration and pain scores on gray matter. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a meta-analysis. METHODS: VBM studies in PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar, from November 2005 to June 2020, were thoroughly collected and carefully reviewed. Manual searches were performed using title and citation information. Gray matter VBM study comparing adult patients (18-65 years) with CPP to healthy controls was reviewed, and results, presented in Talairach or Montreal Neurological Institute coordinates, were included. The t value, peak coordinates, and basic clinical information of each study were reported in detail. Anisotropic effect-size signed differential mapping was used for voxel-based meta-analyses. RESULTS: Patients with CPP had decreased gray matter in the left anterior cingulate (z value = 2.950, P < 0.001), right median cingulate (z value = 1.858, P = 0.001), and the insula bilaterally (left: z value = 2.441, P < 0.001; right: z value = 2.113, P < 0.001 ), and increased gray matter in the right striatum (z value = 1.194, P < 0.001). Subgroup meta-analysis showed female patients with CPP also had decreased gray matter in the left anterior cingulate gyrus (z value = 2.622, P < 0.001). Meta-regression analyses revealed that pain symptom duration was positively associated with a large right brain region (z value = 2.110, P < 0.001), a negative association between pain symptom duration and gray matter was found in the right anterior cingulate (z value = 1.969, P < 0.001) and right middle frontal gyrus (z value = 1.849, P < 0.001). LIMITATIONS: Due to the lack of data from male patients, we were unable to perform a male subgroup analysis; therefore, we cannot thoroughly explore the difference in CPP from the perspective of gender. CONCLUSION: We identified gray matter changes in CPP patients and female patients, as well as a close relationship between CPP and mental disorders. With the chronicity of pain leads to changes in relevant brain regions, which makes treatment more challenging and may have synergistic effects with affective disorders. More prospective longitudinal structural MRI studies of CPP examining the associations between those variables and gray matter in a larger population should be conducted. Additional prospective longitudinal structural MRI studies of CPP with larger sample sizes to confirm the relationships between these variables and gray matter are needed as well as gender differences of CPP in brain structure and function.

Autoimmune encephalitis is characterized by mental and behavioral symptoms, seizures, and cognitive impairment. The presence of schizophrenia needs to be distinguished from that of autoimmune encephalitis. Herein, we describe the case of a woman who exhibited abnormal mental behavior and cognitive impairment. The patient had experienced similar symptoms more than 20 years previously and had been diagnosed with schizophrenia. The patient's psychotic symptoms improved after treatment with antipsychotic drugs; however, cognitive impairment persisted. She was diagnosed with anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)-receptor concurrent with anti-α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA)-receptor encephalitis. She showed improvement after treatment with steroids and intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIgs). Furthermore, we reviewed the literature and found that, including the present case, 10 patients have been diagnosed with anti-NMDA concurrent with anti-AMPA-receptor encephalitis. Three of these patients were men and seven were women, and their ages ranged from 21 to 71 years. Moreover, seven (70%) patients had a history of tumors. Symptoms of these patients included psychotic symptoms, varying degrees of consciousness disturbance, seizures, dyskinesia, dystonia, autonomic dysfunction, agitation, and verbal reduction. Brain magnetic resonance imaging findings showed scattered fluid-attenuated inversion recovery hyperintensity in subcortical white matter and/or medial temporal lobe in seven (70%) patients. After combination treatment, including tumor removal and administration of steroids, IVIg, plasma exchange, or immunity inhibitors, the symptoms improved in part of the patients. It is necessary to exclude autoimmune encephalitis for patients with psychiatric manifestations and cognitive impairment. Timely combination therapy is important in anti-NMDA-receptor concurrent with anti-AMPA-receptor encephalitis.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has been a continuous global threat since the first identification of the disease in December 2019. COVID-19 vaccination is a crucial preventive approach that can halt this pandemic. However, many factors affect the willingness of the public to be vaccinated against COVID-19 at the early stage of the vaccination programme. We used network analysis to investigate the interrelation of vaccination willingness and its associated factors. METHODS: A population-representative sample of 539 Chinese adults completed a battery of online self-assessments, including those on vaccination willingness, health status, attitude towards vaccines, COVID-19-related psychological elements and other variables. Network analysis was performed using the R qgraph package. RESULTS: In total, 445 (82.6%) participants scored high on their willingness to vaccinate. Attitude towards vaccines, the influence of people around an individual and health status were directly significantly related to vaccination willingness. The betweenness of age was the highest and, the emotional states had the strongest centrality. LIMITATIONS: Network analysis is not sufficient to determine the causal relationships of the links between nodes. In addition, there are other latent essential elements that were not evaluated. Finally, the sample size was relatively small. CONCLUSION: Network analysis showed that attitude toward vaccines and emotional states are the most critical factors affecting vaccination willingness, which indicates that we should pay attention to the impact of the dissemination of Internet information on vaccination willingness and public emotional states during a pandemic which is very important for promoting vaccination programs.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) patients demonstrate abnormal neural activation even after complete remission. Many task-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have focused on changes in brain function in individuals with remitted MDD (rMDD). We conducted a meta-analysis of these studies to explore differences in brain activation between patients with rMDD and healthy controls (HCs). Our meta-analysis included 13 studies, encompassing 18 experiments, 304 rMDD patients and 321 HCs. Patients with rMDD showed increased neural activation in the left inferior parietal gyrus and right fusiform gyrus and decreased neural activation in the left superior frontal gyrus, right middle temporal gyrus and right Heschl gyrus. Meta-regression analysis revealed that patient age and the number of depressive episodes were negatively associated with brain activity in the left superior frontal gyrus. Our findings suggest abnormal brain function, especially in areas involved in cognitive function, emotion regulation and perception, in rMDD patients; alterations of these regions may be the primary or secondary neurophysiological mechanisms underlying MDD and provide potential neuroimaging targets for early screening.
