RESUMO

The recovery of lithium from spent lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries is of great significance to prevent resource depletion and environmental pollution. In this study, through active ingredient separation, selective leaching and stepwise chemical precipitation develop a new method for the selective recovery of lithium from spent LiFePO4 batteries by using sodium persulphate (Na2S2O8) to oxidize LiFePO4 to FePO4. The impact of various variables on the efficiency of lithium leaching was investigated. Moreover, a combination of thermodynamic analysis and characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was employed to elucidate the leaching mechanism. It was found that 98.65% of lithium could be selectively leached in just 35 minutes at 60°C with only 0.2 times excess of Na2S2O8. This high leaching efficiency can be attributed to the stability and lack of structural damage during the oxidation leaching process. The proposed process is economically viable and environmentally friendly, thus showing great potential for the large-scale recycling of spent LiFePO4 batteries.

RESUMO

Interleukin-33 (IL-33) is known to activate the regulatory T lymphocytes (Tregs), which are negatively correlated with brain damage after ischemic stroke. In this study, we aimed to investigate the role of Tregs in IL-33-mediated neuroprotection and elucidate the underlying mechanisms. In vivo, male C57BL/6 N mice were subjected to 60 min of transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAO), followed by daily administration of vehicle or IL-33 immediately after injury. Tregs were depleted by intraperitoneal administration of anti-CD25 antibody (anti-CD25Ab). Behavioral changes, brain edema, neuronal injury, Treg percentages, and cytokine expression levels were investigated in each group. In vitro experiments, primary mouse neuronal cells were subjected to oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) for 3 h. Vehicle- or drug-conditioned Tregs were applied to the neurons at the time of induction of hypoxia. Neuronal apoptosis and cytokine expression were measured in each group. The results indicate that intraperitoneal administration of anti-CD25Ab reduced CD4 + CD25 + Foxp3+ Tregs, increased infarct volume, enhanced stroke-induced cell death, and decreased sensorimotor functions. Notably, IL-33 increased CD4 + CD25 + Foxp3+ Tregs in the spleen and brain. However, blockading ST2 attenuated these effects of IL-33. The supernatant of the IL-33-treated Treg culture reduced neuronal apoptosis and elevated the production of the Treg cytokines IL-10, IL-35, and transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß). Anti-CD25Ab abrogated the neuroprotective effect of IL-33. Mechanistically, the neuroprotective effects of IL-33 were associated with reduction in apoptosis-related proteins and production of Tregs related cytokines. Overall, these findings showed that IL-33 afforded neuroprotection against ischemic brain injury by enhancing ST2-dependent regulatory T-cell expansion and activation via a mechanism involving anti-apoptosis proteins and cytokines, representing a promising immune modulatory target for the treatment of stroke.

RESUMO

Rapid, efficient and accurate nucleic acid molecule detection is important in the screening of diseases and pathogens, yet remains a limiting factor at point of care (POC) treatment. Microfluidic systems are characterized by fast, integrated, miniaturized features which provide an effective platform for qualitative and quantitative detection of nucleic acid molecules. The nucleic acid detection process mainly includes sample preparation and target molecule amplification. Given the advancements in theoretical research and technological innovations to date, nucleic acid extraction and amplification integrated with microfluidic systems has advanced rapidly. The primary goal of this review is to outline current approaches used for nucleic acid detection in the context of microfluidic systems. The secondary goal is to identify new approaches that will help shape future trends at the intersection of nucleic acid detection and microfluidics, particularly with regard to increasing disease and pathogen detection for improved diagnosis and treatment.

RESUMO

A dinuclear ruthenium(II) complex Ruazo was designed and synthesized, in which oxidative cyclization of the azo and o-amino group was employed for the detection of hypochlorous acid (HClO) in aqueous solution. The non-emissive Ruazo formed highly luminescent triazole-ruthenium(II) complex in presence of HClO and successfully imaged HClO in living cell and living mouse.

RESUMO

HEPES is not suitable for fluorescence detection of HClO because it can be oxidized by HClO. A novel probe for HClO, which can selectively and sensitively detect HClO in absolute PBS, was developed on the basis of an oxidation reaction with an azo moiety. Furthermore, it works well in live mouse imaging.

RESUMO

The polymorphism of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) -634C/G has been correlated with susceptibility to osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH). The aim of this study was to derive a more precise estimation of the relationship between the VEGF -634C/G polymorphism and ONFH by performing a meta-analysis. We searched articles indexed in Pubmed, OVID and Web of Science published up to January 2015 that met our predefined criteria. The strength of the association between VEGF -634C/G polymorphism and ONFH risk was assessed by an odds ratio (OR) with the corresponding 95% CI. Three eligible studies involving 692 cases and 875 controls were identified. Overall, pooled analysis indicated a significant association between VEGF -634C/G polymorphism and ONFH risk (for C vs. G: OR=1.141, 95% CI 1.055-1.235, P=0.001; for CC vs. GG: OR=1.345, 95% CI 1.124-1.610, P=0.001; for CG vs. GG: OR=1.106, 95% CI 1.018-1.202, P=0.017; for CG+CC vs. GG: OR=1.104, 95% CI 1.035-1.177, P=0.003; for CC vs. GG+ CG: OR=1.294, 95% CI 1.051-1.593, P=0.015). No evidence of publication bias was observed. In conclusion, this meta-analysis suggested that polymorphism of VEGF -634C/G was a risk factor for ONFH. This finding needs further confirmation by trans-regional multicenter study with large sample in different ethnic populations, such as Caucasian and Austroloid.

RESUMO

Several hypotheses have been developed to interpret the progression of tubulointerstitial fibrosis (TF), including senescence, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, inflammation, chronic hypoxia, and reactive oxygen species. All of these hypotheses are based on persistent cell injury and localized cell death. Proliferation of neighboring renal tubular epithelial cells (RTECs) is beneficial for organ function recovery from acute injury. However, compensatory proliferation is not always advantageous, as the proliferating cells are vulnerable to ongoing detrimental stimuli, such as inflammation, endocrine stress, high blood pressure, hypoxia/ischemia, and the like. Cell injury and death promotes secretion of growth factors, which evokes proliferation of RTECs; entering the cell cycle makes the RTECs more vulnerable to injury and death. Under persistent stress, death and proliferation are mutually promoted and form the vicious circle that triggers, maintains, and augments the inflammation and progression of TF. We hypothesize that the "proliferation-death" circle is another important pathophysiologic mechanism of TF onset. Through this hypothesis, this paper interprets the development and progression of TF. Moreover, the vicious circle may be universal, underlying the development of inflammation and fibrosis in various organs and tissues. The hypothesis also suggests a potential therapy strategy for the inhibition of fibrosis.

RESUMO

Based on Hyperion hyperspectral image data, the image-derived shifting sand, false-Gobi spectra, and field-measured sparse vegetation spectra were taken as endmembers, and the sparse vegetation coverage (< 40%) in Minqin oasis-desert transitional zone of Gansu Province was estimated by using fully constrained linear spectral mixture model (LSMM) and non-constrained LSMM, respectively. The results showed that the sparse vegetation fraction based on fully constrained LSMM described the actual sparse vegetation distribution. The differences between sparse vegetation fraction and field-measured vegetation coverage were less than 5% for all samples, and the RMSE was 3.0681. However, the sparse vegetation fraction based on non-constrained LSMM was lower than the field-measured vegetation coverage obviously, and the correlation between them was poor, with a low R2 of 0.5855. Compared with McGwire's corresponding research, the sparse vegetation coverage estimation in this study was more accurate and reliable, having expansive prospect for application in the future.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: This study was to assess the effectiveness of new bone formation and regeneration by using a rhBMP-2 and beta-TCP as a carrier in rabbits' mandible. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The mandibles of 36 rabbits were exposed and cortical bone was penetrated for this study. The experimental subjects were divided into 3 groups each 12 rabbits; control group, experimental group 1, and experimental group 2. Control group had the defect itself without any treatment, in the experimental group 1, beta-TCP only was grafted, and in the experimental group 2, rhBMP-2 soaked in beta-TCP was grafted. The rabbits were sacrificed after 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8weeks, and new bone formation area was examined and measured for bone quantitative and qualitative analysis with light, fluorescent and polarized microscopy. RESULTS: In the experimental group 1, new bone formation from the adjacent host bone was made by osteoconduction, and in the experimental group 2, direct new bone formation by osteoinduction of rhBMP-2 as well as new bone formation by osteoconduction of beta-TCP were observed. CONCLUSION: rhBMP-2 of experimental group 2 is very effective in the bone formation in early 2weeks and bone remodelling from 3weeks.
