BACKGROUND: Ocular tuberculosis is a relatively rare extrapulmonary manifestation of tuberculosis. This vision-threatening disease is extremely challenging to diagnose, particularly because it can mimic other diseases. We report a case of tuberculous ciliary body granuloma initially diagnosed as bullous retinal detachment. CASE REPORT: A 52-year-old female presented with bullous retinal detachment in her left eye, and ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) verified the presence of a lesion with ciliary body granulomatous inflammation. The T-SPOT was positive, and the purified protein derivative (PPD) test was strongly positive (diameter of 20 mm). Following the administration of oral anti-tuberculosis regimen combined with prednisone, the retina gradually became reattached, the ciliary body granuloma became significantly reduced in size, and the visual acuity of the patient noticeably improved. CONCLUSIONS: Tuberculous ciliary body granulomas can cause bullous exudative retinal detachment and can be diagnosed with UBM. Early and full-course anti-tuberculosis treatment (ATT) combined with corticosteroid therapy can improve the patient prognosis.

Soybean plays an important role in food, medicine, and industry. The quality inspection of soybean is essential for soybean yield and the agricultural economy. However, soybean pest is an important factor that seriously affects soybean yield, among which leguminivora glycinivorella matsumura is the most frequent pest. Aiming at the problem that the traditional detection methods have low accuracy and need a large number of samples to train the model, this paper proposed a detection method for leguminivora glycinivorella matsumura based on an A-ResNet (Attention-ResNet) meta-learning model. In this model, the ResNet network was combined with Attention to obtain the feature vectors that can better express the samples, so as to improve the performance of the model. As well, the classifier was designed as a multi-class support vector machine (SVM) to reduce over-fitting. Furthermore, in order to improve the training stability of the model and the prediction performance on the testing set, the traditional Batch Normalization was replaced by the Layer Normalization, and the Label Smooth method was used to punish the original loss. The experimental results showed that the accuracy of the A-ResNet meta-learning model reached 94.57 ± 0.19%, which can realize rapid and accurate nondestructive detection, and provides theoretical support for the intelligent detection of soybean pests.

It is known that the circular RNA (circRNA) molecule circRIMS is overexpressed in gastric cancer and plays an oncogenic role. However, its role in other cancers is unknown. In this study, we analyzed its role in endometrial cancer (EC). EC and paired non-tumor tissue samples were collected from a total of 63 EC patients and subjected to total RNA isolations and reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) to analyze the differential expression of circRIMS and miR-505. Overexpression of circRIMS and miR-505 was reached in EC cells and their interaction was analyzed using RT-qPCRs. The role of circRIMS in regulating miR-505 methylation was analyzed by methylation-specific RT-qPCR. Bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) assay was performed to analyze the roles of circRIMS and miR-505 in regulating cell proliferation. circRIMS was upregulated in EC, while miR-505 was downregulated in EC. circRIMS and miR-505 were inversely correlated across both EC and non-tumor tissues. In EC cells, circRIMS overexpression decreased miR-505 expression and increased miR-505 gene methylation. BrdU assay showed that circRIMS overexpression increased cell proliferation and reduced the inhibitory effects of miR-505 overexpression on cell proliferation. circRIMS may downregulate miR-505 through methylation to increase cell proliferation.

BACKGROUND: To analyze and compare the characteristics of macular morphology and microcirculation in diabetic macular edema (DME) patients with and without macular serous retinal detachment (SRD). METHODS: One hundred eyes in 81 patients diagnosed with the DME (the central macular thickness (CMT) of ≥ 300 µm) from March 2020 to November 2020 were selected. According to whether complicated with SRD, patients were divided into DME with SRD (60 eyes) and without SRD (40 eyes) groups. We analyzed the following parameters: CMT, central retinal thickness (CRT), subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT), number of hyperreflective foci (HF) in the complete retina, inner retina, outer retina, and subretinal space, the integrity of the ellipsoid zone (EZ) and external limiting membrane (ELM), the presence of disorganization of inner retinal layers (DRIL), foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area, and the vascular flow density of superficial capillary plexus (SCP), deep capillary plexus (DCP), and choriocapillaris. RESULTS: (1) Compared to the group without SRD, the group with SRD had a greater CMT (P < 0.05) and a smaller CRT (P < 0.001); (2) The number of the HF in the complete retina, outer retina, and the subretinal space was larger in the group with SRD (P < 0.001); 3.The proportion of the EZ disruption (P < 0.05) and ELM disruption (P < 0.001) were higher in the group with SRD; 4. The SFCT (P < 0.05) and the vascular flow density of choriocapillaris (P < 0.05) were greater in the group with SRD; 5. There were no significant differences in the FAZ area and the vascular flow density of the DCP and SCP (P > 0.05); 6. The presence of the SRD was correlated with the integrity of the ELM, the number of HF in the complete retina, outer retina, and subretinal space (χ2 = 26.930, OR = 0.707, 0.263, 0.995, P < 0.001), as well as the SFCT (OR = 0.992, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The results support the hypothesis that the presence of the ELM disruption, the larger number of the HF, and the thickening and hyperperfusion of the choroid may be involved in the pathogenesis of SRD in DME.

Gastric cancer (GCa) is the most common human health-threatening malignancy, and its high incidence and poor prognosis. Previous studies have shown that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are aberrantly expressed in a variety of tumors and are involved in tumor progression. This study aimed to investigate the regulatory role of LINC01420 in GCa cell proliferation migration and invasion, and search for new prognostic biomarkers for GCa. The expression levels of LINC01420 and miR-149-5p in GCa cells were analyzed with reverse transcription-quantitative PCR. Kaplan Meier survival analysis and Cox regression were used to analyze the prognostic value. Luciferase reporter assay was used to detect the interaction between LINC01420 and miR-149-5p. The effects of LINC01420/miR-149-5p axis on GCa cell proliferation, migration and invasion were assessed by CCK-8 and Transwell assays. LINC01420 expression levels were significantly increased in tissues and cell lines of GCa. Kaplan Meier curve results showed that overexpression of LINC01420 predicted poor prognosis. Silencing LINC01420 could inhibit the proliferation migration and invasion of GCa cells. The luciferase reporter assay results indicated that miR-149-5p might be a target of LINC01420 and mediate the effects of LINC01420 on GCa cell proliferation and migration and invasion. In conclusion, this study demonstrates an important regulatory role of the LINC01420/miR-149-5p axis in GCa progression and it provides a novel and significant biomarker for GCa treatment and prognosis.

BACKGROUND: Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) is an effective treatment for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the impact of hepatitis B viral (HBV) infection and body mass index (BMI) on TACE is controversial. The present study aimed to compare the influence of HBV and high BMI on TACE outcomes in advanced HCC. METHODS: Based on HBV infection history and BMI, patients were assigned to different subgroups. Blood samples were collected and analyzed by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS) and the overall survival (OS) in the population. RESULTS: Compared to overweight combined HBV patients who received TACE, people with normal weight or no viral infection had significantly better OS and PFS. Sex, age, portal vein tumor thrombus, BCLC, ECOG, and tumor diameter are the main risk factors affecting PFS and OS. Except for the postoperative fever, no significant difference was detected in adverse reactions. Irrespective of TACE, the average expression of HMGB1 in hepatitis or obesity patients was higher than that in normal individuals and did not show upregulation after TACE. Patients without overweight or HBV infection had a low expression of serum HMGB1 that was substantially upregulated after TACE. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, overweight combined HBV infection patients had shorter PFS and OS than other HCC patients. Thus, HBV and BMI maybe two factors affecting the efficacy of TACE via upregulated HMGB1.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Peri-implantitis is a plaque-associated pathological condition occurring in tissues around dental implants, characterized by inflammation in the peri-implant mucosa and subsequent progressive loss of supporting bone. Wnt5a is the activating ligand of the non-canonical Wnt signaling pathways and plays important roles in leukocyte infiltration and cytokine/ chemokine production in inflammatory disorders. Previous studies showed that Wnt5a was significantly up-regulated in gingival tissues of chronic and aggressive periodontitis. However, the roles and the regulatory mechanisms of Wnt5a in peri-implantitis are not well known. METHODS: The expression of Wnt5a in gingival tissues collected from 8 healthy implant patients and 8 peri-implantitis patients was analyzed by Western blotting and immunofluorescence. Porphyromonas gingivalis infected macrophages isolated from the peripheral blood of healthy volunteers were used as an in vitro cellular model of peri-implantitis. Using neutralizing antibodies, inhibitors and siRNA, the production and roles of Wnt5a in peri-implantitis were assessed by immunofluorescence, quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Western blotting. Unpaired two-tailed Student's t test was used to compare qRT-PCR and Western blotting results. P ≤ .05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Wnt5a was highly expressed in the gingival tissues of peri-implantitis patients. Compared to controls, Wnt5a increased in P gingivalis infected macrophages. Wnt5a production in response to P gingivalis infection was dependent on LOX-1 and TLR4. Compared to controls, Wnt5a knockdown impaired IL-1ß, MCP-1, and MMP2 production induced by P gingivalis infection. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that Wnt5a is involved in LOX-1 and TLR4 induced inflammatory signature via inflammatory cytokines production in response to P gingivalis infection. These findings demonstrate that Wnt5a maybe an important component of the host immune response in peri-implantitis.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this meta-analysis was to compare the clinical and oncologic outcomes of robotic low anterior resection (R-LAR) with conventional laparoscopic low anterior resection (L-LAR). METHODS: A search in the MEDLINE, Embase, and Ovid databases was performed for studies published before July 2014 that compared the clinical and oncologic outcomes of R-LAR and L-LAR. The methodological quality of the selected studies was assessed. Depending on statistical heterogeneity, a fixed or random effects model was used for the meta-analysis. The clinical and oncologic outcomes evaluated included operative time, estimated blood loss, length of hospital stay, rate of conversion to open surgery, post-operative complications, circumferential margin status, and number of lymph nodes collected. RESULTS: Eight studies, including 324 R-LAR cases and 268 conventional L-LAR cases, were analyzed. The meta-analysis showed that R-LAR was associated with a shorter hospital stay (mean difference (MD) = -1.03; 95% confidence interval (CI) = -1.78, -0.28; P = 0.007), lower conversion rate (odds ratio (OR) = 0.08; 95% CI = 0.02, 0.31; P = 0.0002), lower rate of circumferential margin involvement (OR = 0.5; 95% CI = 0.25, 1.01; P = 0.05), and lower overall complication rate (MD = 0.65; 95% CI = 0.43, 0.99; P = 0.04) compared with L-LAR. There was no difference in operative time (MD = 28.4; 95% CI = -3.48, 60.27; P = 0.08), the number of lymph nodes removed (MD = -0.63; 95% CI = -0.78, 2.05; P = 0.38), and days to return of bowel function (MD = -0.15; 95% CI = -0.37, 0.06; P = 0.17). CONCLUSIONS: R-LAR was shown to be associated with a shorter hospital stay, lower conversion rate, lower rate of circumferential margin involvement, and lower overall complication rate compared with L-LAR. There were no differences in operative time, the number of lymph nodes removed, and days to return of bowel function.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this meta-analysis was to compare the clinical safety and efficacy of robotic right colectomy (RRC) with conventional laparoscopic right colectomy (LRC). METHODS: A literature search was performed for comparative studies reporting perioperative outcomes of RRC and LRC. The methodological quality of the selected studies was assessed. Depending on statistical heterogeneity, the fixed effects model or the random effects model were used for the meta-analysis. Operative time, estimated blood loss, length of hospital stay, conversion rates to open surgery, postoperative complications, and related outcomes were evaluated. RESULTS: Seven studies, including 234 RRC cases and 415 conventional LRC cases, were analyzed. The meta-analysis showed that RRC had longer operative times (P < 0.00001), lower estimated blood losses (P = 0.0002), lower postoperative overall complications (P = 0.02), and significantly faster bowel function recovery (P < 0.00001). There were no differences in the length of hospital stay (P = 0.12), conversion rates to open surgery (P = 0.48), postoperative ileus (P = 0.08), anastomosis leakage (P = 0.28), and bleeding (P = 0.95). CONCLUSIONS: Compared to LRC, RRC was associated with reduced estimated blood losses, reduced postoperative complications, longer operative times, and a significantly faster recovery of bowel function. Other perioperative outcomes were equivalent.

BACKGROUND: Dietary phosphorus intake may serve as a potential predictor for peripheral neuropathy (PN). While past research has predominantly focused on the relationship between dietary phosphorus and bone health, relatively little is known about its role in the nervous system, particularly its association with PN. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from NHANES 1999-2004. Participants were categorized into different dietary phosphorus intake groups, and the relationship between dietary phosphorus and PN was explored using multifactorial logistic regression, restricted cubic splines (RCS) analysis, and threshold effect analysis based on dietary intake. RESULTS: The final study included 7726 participants, with 1378 diagnosed with PN and 6348 without. The study revealed a U-shaped non-linear relationship between dietary calcium and magnesium intake levels and PN, indicating that both excessive and insufficient dietary phosphorus intake may increase the risk of PN. Specifically, the incidence rates in the first quintile (1.433, 95% CI: 1.080-1.901), the fourth quintile (1.284, 95% CI: 1.000-1.648), and the fifth quintile (1.533, 95% CI: 1.155-2.035) significantly higher than the second quintile, with an overall trend showing a decrease followed by an increase in incidence rates. The results of RCS and threshold effect analysis indicate that when dietary phosphorus intake is below 939.44mg, the risk of PN decreases with increasing dietary phosphorus intake. On the contrary, when dietary phosphorus intake exceeds 939.44mg, the risk of PN increases with increasing dietary phosphorus intake. CONCLUSION: This study reveals a U-shaped correlation between dietary phosphorus intake and PN. Future research should further elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying this association, providing guidance for more scientifically informed dietary adjustments to prevent the occurrence of PN.

Washing and sanitation are vital steps during the postharvest processing of fresh produce to reduce the microbial load on the produce surface. Although current process control and validation tools effectively predict sanitizer concentrations in wash water, they have significant limitations in assessing sanitizer effectiveness for reducing microbial counts on produce surfaces. These challenges highlight the urgent need to improve the validation of sanitation processes, especially considering the presence of dynamic organic contaminants and complex surface topographies. This study aims to provide the fresh produce industry with a novel, reliable, and highly accurate method for validating the sanitation efficacy on the produce surface. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of using a food-grade, catalase (CAT)-immobilized biomimetic leaf in combination with vibrational spectroscopy and machine learning to predict microbial inactivation on microgreen surfaces. This was tested using two sanitizers: sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The developed CAT-immobilized leaf-replicated PDMS (CAT@L-PDMS) effectively mimics the microscale topographies and bacterial distribution on the leaf surface. Alterations in the FTIR spectra of CAT@L-PDMS, following simulated sanitation processes, indicate chemical changes due to CAT oxidation induced by NaClO or H2O2 treatments, facilitating the subsequent machine learning modeling. Among the five algorithms tested, the competitive adaptive reweighted sampling partial least squares discriminant analysis (CARS-PLSDA) algorithm was the most effective for classifying the inactivation efficacy of E. coli on microgreen leaf surfaces. It predicted bacterial reduction on microgreen surfaces with 100% accuracy in both training and prediction sets for NaClO, and 95% in the training set and 86% in the prediction set for H2O2. This approach can improve the validation of fresh produce sanitation processes and pave the way for future research.

BACKGROUND: The role and clinical significance of the response gene to complement 32 (RGC32) in various cancers have been documented, yet its implications in clear cell Renal Cell Carcinoma (ccRCC) remain underexplored. METHODS: This study investigated RGC32's diagnostic and prognostic relevance in ccRCC using bioinformatics methods with data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO). The impact of RGC32 on ccRCC progression was assessed through nude mouse tumor assays. Immunohistochemistry evaluated RGC32 levels in ccRCC and adjacent normal tissues, while cell proliferation, migration, and invasion capabilities were analyzed using CCK-8, monoclonal proliferation assays, Transwell, and wound healing assays, respectively. Western blotting measured relevant protein expressions. RESULTS: Bioinformatics analysis highlighted RGC32's significant role in ccRCC pathogenesis. Elevated RGC32 expression in ccRCC tissues was linked to disease progression. Functionally, RGC32 was found to enhance the expression of proteins such as p-PI3K, CyclinA1, CyclinD1, p-STAT3, MMP2, MMP3, MMP9, p-SMAD2/3, Snail, Slug, and N-Cadherin via the NF-κB/SHP2/EGFR pathway, while decreasing E-cadherin levels. Moreover, RGC32 facilitated ccRCC cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). CONCLUSION: RGC32 is a pivotal factor in ccRCC development, primarily through the activation of the NF-κB/SHP2/EGFR signaling pathway.

The visible/near infrared (Vis/NIR) spectrum will become distorted due to variations in sample color, thereby reducing the prediction accuracy of fruit composition. In this study, we aimed to develop a deep learning model with color correction capability to predict oranges soluble solids content (SSC) based on multi-source data fusion. Initially, a machine vision and Vis/NIR spectroscopy online acquisition device was designed to collect and analyze color images and transmission spectra. Subsequently, data fusion methods were proposed for color features and spectral data. Finally, color-correction one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) models base on multi-source data were constructed. The results showed that, the RMSEP of optimal color-correction model was decreased by 36.4 % and 16.1 % compared to partial least squares model and conventional 1D-CNN model, respectively. The multi-source data fusion of machine vision and Vis/NIR spectroscopy has the potential to improve the accuracy of food composition prediction.

BACKGROUND: YangshenDingzhi granules (YSDZ) are clinically effective in preventing and treating COVID-19. The present study elucidates the underlying mechanism of YSDZ intervention in viral pneumonia by employing serum pharmacochemistry and network pharmacology. METHODS: The chemical constituents of YSDZ in the blood were examined using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole/orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap MS). Potential protein targets were obtained from the SwissTargetPrediction database, and the target genes associated with viral pneumonia were identified using GeneCards, DisGeNET, and Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) databases. The intersection of blood component-related targets and disease-related targets was determined using Venny 2.1. Protein-protein interaction networks were constructed using the STRING database. The Metascape database was employed to perform enrichment analyses of Gene Ontology (GO) functions and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) signaling pathways for the targets, while the Cytoscape 3.9.1 software was utilized to construct drug-component-disease-target-pathway networks. Further, in vitro and in vivo experiments were performed to establish the therapeutic effectiveness of YSDZ against viral pneumonia. RESULTS: Fifteen compounds and 124 targets linked to viral pneumonia were detected in serum. Among these, MAPK1, MAPK3, AKT1, EGFR, and TNF play significant roles. In vitro tests revealed that the medicated serum suppressed the replication of H1N1, RSV, and SARS-CoV-2 replicon. Further, in vivo testing analysis shows that YSDZ decreases the viral load in the lungs of mice infected with RSV and H1N1. CONCLUSION: The chemical constituents of YSDZ in the blood may elicit therapeutic effects against viral pneumonia by targeting multiple proteins and pathways.

Soluble solids content (SSC) is particularly important for kiwifruit, as it not only determines its flavor, but also helps assess its maturity. Visible/near-infrared (Vis/NIR) spectroscopy has been widely used to evaluate the SSC of kiwifruit. Still, the local calibration models may be ineffective for new batches of samples with biological variability, which limits the commercial application of this technology. Thus, a calibration model was developed using one batch of fruit and the prediction performance was tested with a different batch, which differs in origin and harvest time. Four calibration models were established with Batch 1 kiwifruit to predict SSC, which were based on full spectra (i.e., partial least squares regression (PLSR) model based on full spectra), continuous effective wavelengths (i.e., changeable size moving window-PLSR (CSMW-PLSR) model), and discrete effective wavelengths (i.e., competitive adaptive reweighted sampling-PLSR (CARS-PLSR) model and PLSR-variable importance in projection (PLSR-VIP) model) respectively. The Rv2 values of these four models in the internal validation set were 0.83, 0.92, 0.96, and 0.89, with corresponding RMSEV values of 1.08 %, 0.75 %, 0.56 %, and 0.89 %, and RPDv values of 2.49, 3.61, 4.80, and 3.02, respectively. Clearly, all four PLSR models performed acceptably in the validation set. However, these models performed very poorly in predicting the Batch 2 samples, with their RMSEP values all exceeding 1.5 %. Although the models could not be used to predict exact SSC, they could still interpret the SSC values of Batch 2 kiwifruit to some extent because the predicted SSC values could fit a specific line. To enable the CSMW-PLSR calibration model to predict the SSC of Batch 2 kiwifruit, the robustness of this model was improved by calibration updating and slope/bias correction (SBC). Different numbers of new samples were randomly selected for updating and SBC, and the minimum number of samples for updating and SBC was finally determined to be 30 and 20, respectively. After calibration updating and SBC, the new models had average Rp2, average RMSEP, and average RPDp values of 0.83 and 0.89, 0.69 % and 0.57 %, and 2.45 and 2.97, respectively, in the prediction set. Overall, the methods proposed in this study can effectively address the issue of poor performance of calibration models in predicting new samples with biological variability and make the models more robust, thus providing important guidance for the maintenance of SSC online detection models in practical applications.

BACKGROUND: Xihuang Pills/Capsules have a longstanding history of utilization in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for treating cancer. Nevertheless, a comprehensive investigation is required regarding the specific impacts and safety of Xihuang Pills/Capsules in individuals with uterine cervical neoplasms. Thus, conducting a meta-analysis is essential to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of combining Xihuang Pills/Capsules with Western medicine in patients with cervical neoplasms. METHODS: The research involved searching 5 English and 4 Chinese databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating the use of Xihuang Pills/Capsules in conjunction with Western medicine for treating uterine cervical neoplasms. Subsequently, statistical analysis was carried out using Review Manager software (version 5.3). RESULTS: This research encompassed 10 RCTs involving 937 patients. The findings revealed that the combination of Xihuang Pills/Capsules with Western medicine treatment led to improvements in various aspects of the patients' condition. Specifically, there was an enhancement in the short-term efficacy rate (risk ratio [RR] = 1.14, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.06-1.22, P = .0003), Karnofsky performance score (KPS) (mean difference [MD] = 5.90, 95% CI: 0.54-11.26, P = .03), survival rates, CD3+, CD3 + CD4+, CD3 + CD8+, CD3-CD56 + cells, and immunoglobulin M in patients with uterine cervical neoplasms. Moreover, the combination treatment resulted in a reduction of adverse reactions, including gastrointestinal reactions (RR = 0.52, 95% CI: 0.42-0.64, P < .00001), radiation proctitis (RR = 0.47, 95% CI: 0.33-0.68, P < .0001), myelosuppression (RR = 0.41, 95% CI: 0.26-0.64, P < .0001), as well as carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCC-Ag) levels. Additionally, the treatment exhibited an inhibitory effect on white blood cells (WBCs) and platelets (PLTs). CONCLUSION: The amalgamation of Xihuang Pills/Capsules with conventional anti-tumor therapy proves to be both effective and safe in the treatment of cervical neoplasms. However, further validation through high-quality RCTs is necessary to substantiate these findings.

BACKGROUND: Retinoblastoma (RB) is frequently occurring malignant tumors that originate in the retina, and their exact cause and development mechanisms are yet to be fully comprehended. In this study, we identified possible biomarkers for RB and delved into the molecular mechanics linked with such markers. METHODS: In this study GSE110811 and GSE24673 were analyzed. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) was applied to screen modules and genes associated with RB. By overlapping RB-related module genes with differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between RB and control samples, differentially expressed retinoblastoma genes (DERBGs) were acquired. A gene ontology (GO) enrichment analysis and a kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis were conducted to explore the functions of these DERBGs. To study the protein interactions of DERBGs, a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed. Hub DERBGs were screened using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression analysis, as well as the random forest (RF) algorithm. Additionally, the diagnostic performance of RF and LASSO methods was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and single-gene gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) was conducted to explore the potential molecular mechanisms involved with these Hub DERBGs. In addition, the competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) regulatory network of Hub DERBGs was constructed. RESULT: About 133 DERBGs were found to be associated with RB. GO and KEGG enrichment analyses revealed that the important pathways of these DERBGs. Furthermore, the PPI network revealed 82 DERBGs interacting with each other. By RF and LASSO methods, PDE8B, ESRRB, and SPRY2 were identified as Hub DERBGs in patients with RB. From the expression assessment of Hub DERBGs, it was found that the levels of expression of PDE8B, ESRRB, and SPRY2 were significantly decreased in the tissues of RB tumors. Secondly, single-gene GSEA revealed a connection between these 3 Hub DERBGs and oocyte meiosis, cell cycle, and spliceosome. Finally, the ceRNA regulatory network revealed that hsa-miR-342-3p, hsa-miR-146b-5p, hsa-miR-665, and hsa-miR-188-5p may play a central role in the disease. CONCLUSION: Hub DERBGs may provide new insight into RB diagnosis and treatment based on the understanding of disease pathogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Birth asphyxia causes hypoxia or inadequate perfusion to the organs of newborns, leading to metabolism dysfunctions including blood glucose disorders. METHODS: Neonates with and without birth asphyxia were retrospectively recruited from 53 hospitals in Hubei Province from January 1 to December 31, 2018. In summary, 875, 1139, and 180 cases in the control group, the mild asphyxia group, and the severe asphyxia group were recruited, respectively. Neonatal blood glucose values at postnatal 1, 2, 6, and 12 h (time error within 0.5 h was allowed) were gathered from the medical records. RESULTS: The incidence rates of hyperglycemia in the control group, the mild asphyxia group and the severe asphyxia group were 2.97%, 7.90%, and 23.33%, respectively (p < 0.001). Additionally, the incidence rates of hypoglycemia in the three groups above were 3.66%, 4.13%, and 7.78%, respectively (p = 0.042). The blood glucose values of neonates with hypoglycemia in the asphyxia group were lower than in the control group (p = 0.003). Furthermore, the blood glucose values of neonates with hyperglycemia were highest in the severe asphyxia group (p < 0.001). There were 778 and 117 cases with blood glucose records at four predefined time points in the mild and severe asphyxia group, respectively. The incidence of blood glucose disorders in the mild asphyxia group significantly decreased from postnatal 6 h (pï¼0.05). However, we found no obvious changes of the incidence of glucose disorders within postnatal 12 h in the severe asphyxia group (p = 0.589). CONCLUSION: Birth asphyxia is likely to cause neonatal blood glucose disorders, both hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, during the early postnatal life. The neonates with severe asphyxia have higher incidence, worse severity and longer duration of blood glucose disorders than neonates with mild asphyxia.

Goose down and duck down have very similar appearance but the quality of goose down is better than that of duck down in general. There is a highest allowable limit as specified by the various national standards of feather and down for the percentage of duck feather or down mixed in goose feather or down. Traditional detection method, manual inspection with a high-scale microscope, is labor intensive and not suitable for large-volume samples analysis and on-site rapid testing. In the present paper, visible/near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy combined with successive projection algorithm (SPA) for characteristic wavelengths selection was used to determinate the content of duck down mixed in goose down. In the range of 450-930 nm, the multiple linear regression (MLR) model established with the 8 characteristic wavelengths selected by SPA achieved good prediction, the correlation coefficient of 0.983, root mean square error of calibration (RMSEC) of 5.44%, and root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) of 5.75%. Therefore, it is expected to be used for rapid detection of feather and down quality in future.
