RESUMO

Covalent network polymers, as materials composed of atoms interconnected by covalent bonds in a continuous network, are known for their thermal and chemical stability. Over the past two decades, these materials have undergone significant transformations, gaining properties such as malleability, environmental responsiveness, recyclability, crystallinity, and customizable porosity, enabled by the development and integration of dynamic covalent chemistry (DCvC). In this review, we explore the innovative realm of covalent network polymers by focusing on the recent advances achieved through the application of DCvC. We start by examining the history and fundamental principles of DCvC, detailing its inception and core concepts and noting its key role in reversible covalent bond formation. Then the reprocessability of covalent network polymers enabled by DCvC is thoroughly discussed, starting from the significant milestones that marked the evolution of these polymers and progressing to their current trends and applications. The influence of DCvC on the crystallinity of covalent network polymers is then reviewed, covering their bond diversity, synthesis techniques, and functionalities. In the concluding section, we address the current challenges faced in the field of covalent network polymers and speculates on potential future directions.

RESUMO

Electrocatalytic carbon dioxide/carbon monoxide reduction reaction (CO(2)RR) has emerged as a prospective and appealing strategy to realize carbon neutrality for manufacturing sustainable chemical products. Developing highly active electrocatalysts and stable devices has been demonstrated as effective approach to enhance the conversion efficiency of CO(2)RR. In order to rationally design electrocatalysts and devices, a comprehensive understanding of the intrinsic structure evolution within catalysts and micro-environment change around electrode interface, particularly under operation conditions, is indispensable. Synchrotron radiation has been recognized as a versatile characterization platform, garnering widespread attention owing to its high brightness, elevated flux, excellent directivity, strong polarization and exceptional stability. This review systematically introduces the applications of synchrotron radiation technologies classified by radiation sources with varying wavelengths in CO(2)RR. By virtue of in situ/operando synchrotron radiationanalytical techniques, we also summarize relevant dynamic evolution processes from electronic structure, atomic configuration, molecular adsorption, crystal lattice and devices, spanning scales from the angstrom to the micrometer. The merits and limitations of diverse synchrotron characterization techniques are summarized, and their applicable scenarios in CO(2)RR are further presented. On the basis of the state-of-the-art fourth-generation synchrotron facilities, a perspective for further deeper understanding of the CO(2)RR process using synchrotron radiation analytical techniques is proposed.

RESUMO

Two covalent organic frameworks consisting of carbazolylene-ethynylene shape-persistent macrocycles with azine (MC-COF-1) or imine (MC-COF-2) linkages were synthesized via imine condensation. The obtained 2D frameworks are fully conjugated which imparts semiconducting properties. In addition, the frameworks showed high porosity with aligned accessible porous channels along the z axis, serving as an ideal platform for post-synthetic incorporation of I2 into the channels to enable electrical conductivity. The resulting MC-COF-1 showed an electrical conductivity up to 7.8×10-4  S cm-1 at room temperature upon I2 doping with the activation energy as low as 0.09 eV. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the electrical properties of both MC-COFs are switchable between electron-conducting and insulating states by simply implementing doping-regenerating cycles. The knowledge gained in this study opens new possibilities for the future development of tunable conductive 2D organic materials.

RESUMO

Zero-gap anion exchange membrane (AEM)-based CO2 electrolysis is a promising technology for CO production, however, their performance at elevated current densities still suffers from the low local CO2 concentration due to heavy CO2 neutralization. Herein, via modulating the CO2 feed mode and quantitative analyzing CO2 utilization with the aid of mass transport modeling, we develop a descriptor denoted as the surface-accessible CO2 concentration ([CO2 ]SA ), which enables us to indicate the transient state of the local [CO2 ]/[OH- ] ratio and helps define the limits of CO2 -to-CO conversion. To enrich the [CO2 ]SA , we developed three general strategies: (1) increasing catalyst layer thickness, (2) elevating CO2 pressure, and (3) applying a pulsed electrochemical (PE) method. Notably, an optimized PE method allows to keep the [CO2 ]SA at a high level by utilizing the dynamic balance period of CO2 neutralization. A maximum jCO of 368±28 mA cmgeo -2 was achieved using a commercial silver catalyst.

RESUMO

Self-sorting is commonly observed in complex reaction systems, which has been utilized to guide the formation of single major by-design molecules. However, most studies have been focused on non-covalent systems, and using self-sorting to achieve covalently bonded architectures is still relatively less explored. Herein, we first demonstrated the dynamic nature of spiroborate linkage and systematically studied the self-sorting behavior observed in the transformation between spiroborate-linked well-defined polymeric and molecular architectures, which is enabled by spiroborate bond exchange. The scrambling between a macrocycle and a 1D helical covalent polymer led to the formation of a molecular cage, whose structures are all unambiguously elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The results indicate that the molecular cage is the thermodynamically favored product in this multi-component reaction system. This work represents the first example of a 1D polymeric architecture transforming into a shape-persistent molecular cage, driven by dynamic covalent self-sorting. This study will further guide the design of spiroborate-based materials and open the possibilities for the development of novel complex yet responsive dynamic covalent molecular or polymeric systems.

RESUMO

Developing low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts to accelerate oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics is vital for water and carbon-dioxide electrolyzers. The fastest-known water oxidation catalyst, Ni(Fe)OxHy, usually produced through an electrochemical reconstruction of precatalysts under alkaline condition, has received substantial attention. However, the reconstruction in the reported catalysts usually leads to a limited active layer and poorly controlled Fe-activated sites. Here, we demonstrate a new electrochemistry-driven F-enabled surface-reconstruction strategy for converting the ultrathin NiFeOxFy nanosheets into an Fe-enriched Ni(Fe)OxHy phase. The activated electrocatalyst shows a low OER overpotential of 218 ± 5 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a low Tafel slope of 31 ± 4 mV dec-1, which is among the best for NiFe-based OER electrocatalysts. Such superior performance is caused by the effective formation of the Fe-enriched Ni(Fe)OxHy active-phase that is identified by operando Raman spectroscopy and the substantially improved surface wettability and gas-bubble-releasing behavior.

RESUMO

In this paper, Pt-ZnO hybrid nanocomposites were prepared by solution plasma technology. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive x-ray analysis (EDX) were used to verify their chemical composition. The size and morphology of the Pt-ZnO hybrid nanocomposites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). These results indicate that about 2-3 nm Pt nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized and dispersed on the pyramid-like ZnO (20-60 nm) surface. Photodegradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) demonstrates that the Pt (5 wt%)-ZnO hybrid nanocomposite has better photocatalytic activity than commercial P25 because Pt NPs restrain the photogenerated electron/hole recombination and increase the catalyst activity.

RESUMO

The membrane-electrode assembly (MEA) approach appears to be the most promising technique to realize the high-rate CO2 /CO electrolysis, however there are major challenges related to the crossover of ions and liquid products from cathode to anode via the membrane and the concomitant anodic oxidation reactions (AORs). In this perspective, by combining experimental and theoretical analyses, several impacts of anodic oxidation of liquid products in terms of performance evaluation are investigated. First, the crossover behavior of several typical liquid products through an anion-exchange membrane is analyzed. Subsequently, two instructive examples (introducing formate or ethanol oxidation during electrolysis) reveals that the dynamic change of the anolyte (i.e., pH and composition) not only brings a slight shift of anodic potentials (i.e., change of competing reactions), but also affects the chemical stability of the anode catalyst. Anodic oxidation of liquid products can also cause either over- or under-estimation of the Faradaic efficiency, leading to an inaccurate assessment of overall performance. To comprehensively understand fundamentals of AORs, a theoretical guideline with hierarchical indicators is further developed to predict and regulate the possible AORs in an electrolyzer. The perspective concludes by giving some suggestions on rigorous performance evaluations for high-rate CO2 /CO electrolysis in an MEA-based setup.

RESUMO

Recycling spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) to efficient water-splitting electrocatalysts is a promising and sustainable technology route for green hydrogen production by renewables. In this work, a fluorinated ternary metal oxide (F-TMO) derived from spent LIBs was successfully converted to a robust water oxidation catalyst for pure water electrolysis by utilizing an anion-exchange membrane. The optimized catalyst delivered a high current density of 3.0 A cm-2 at only 2.56 V and a durability of >300 h at 0.5 A cm-2, surpassing the noble-metal IrO2 catalyst. Such excellent performance benefits from an artificially endowed interface layer on the F-TMO, which renders the exposure of active metal (oxy)hydroxide sites with a stabilized configuration during pure water operation. Compared to other metal oxides (i.e., NiO, Co3O4, MnO2), F-TMO possesses a higher stability number of 2.4 × 106, indicating its strong potential for industrial applications. This work provides a feasible way of recycling waste LIBs to valuable electrocatalysts.

RESUMO

Water dissociation (WD, H2O → H+ + OH-) is the core process in bipolar membranes (BPMs) that limits energy efficiency. Both electric-field and catalytic effects have been invoked to describe WD, but the interplay of the two and the underlying design principles for WD catalysts remain unclear. Using precise layers of metal-oxide nanoparticles, membrane-electrolyzer platforms, materials characterization, and impedance analysis, we illustrate the role of electronic conductivity in modulating the performance of WD catalysts in the BPM junction through screening and focusing the interfacial electric field and thus electrochemical potential gradients. In contrast, the ionic conductivity of the same layer is not a significant factor in limiting performance. BPM water electrolyzers, optimized via these findings, use ~30-nm-diameter anatase TiO2 as an earth-abundant WD catalyst, and generate O2 and H2 at 500 mA cm-2 with a record-low total cell voltage below 2 V. These advanced BPMs might accelerate deployment of new electrodialysis, carbon-capture, and carbon-utilization technology.

RESUMO

In alkaline and neutral MEA CO2 electrolyzers, CO2 rapidly converts to (bi)carbonate, imposing a significant energy penalty arising from separating CO2 from the anode gas outlets. Here we report a CO2 electrolyzer uses a bipolar membrane (BPM) to convert (bi)carbonate back to CO2, preventing crossover; and that surpasses the single-pass utilization (SPU) limit (25% for multi-carbon products, C2+) suffered by previous neutral-media electrolyzers. We employ a stationary unbuffered catholyte layer between BPM and cathode to promote C2+ products while ensuring that (bi)carbonate is converted back, in situ, to CO2 near the cathode. We develop a model that enables the design of the catholyte layer, finding that limiting the diffusion path length of reverted CO2 to ~10 µm balances the CO2 diffusion flux with the regeneration rate. We report a single-pass CO2 utilization of 78%, which lowers the energy associated with downstream separation of CO2 by 10× compared with past systems.

RESUMO

Selenium vacancy engineering has been realized in Co0.85Se nanoparticles via an anoxic melting strategy, where the vacancy content can be continuously controlled to modulate atomic disordering. The resulting Co0.85Se-30 catalyst requires a super low overpotential of 243 mV to achieve 10 mA cm-2 for the OER with a Tafel slope of 45.5 mV dec-1 and 70 h stability. In-depth electrochemical analysis finds that the outstanding properties are chiefly attributed to the dynamic Co-centers, giving the highest intrinsic activity (jCo = 6.49 A g-1 at η = 270 mV) and lowest apparent activation energy (42.43 kJ mol-1).
