RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Some plants germinate their seeds enclosed by a pericarp, while others lack the outer packaging. As a maternal tissue, may impart seeds with different germination strategies. Plants in a community with different flowering times may separately disperse and germinate their seeds; therefore, flowering time can be considered as one manifestation of maternal effects on offspring. The mass of the seed is another important factor influencing germination and represents the intrinsic resource of seed that supports the germination. Using seeds from a species-rich alpine meadow located in the Hengduan Mountains of China, a global biodiversity hotspot, we aim to illustrate whether and how the type of seed (with and without a pericarp) modulates the interaction of flowering time and seed mass with germination. METHODS: Seeds were germinated under a generally favorable condition and germination speed (estimated by mean germination time, MGT) was calculated. We quantified the maternal conditions by separation of flowering time for 67 species in the meadow, in which 31 produced seeds with pericarps and 36 yielded seeds without pericarps, respectively. We also weighed one hundred seeds to assess their mass. KEY RESULTS: The MGT varied between the two types of seed. For seeds with pericarps, MGT was associated with flowering time but not with seed mass. Plants with earlier flowering times in the meadow exhibited more rapid seed germination. For seeds without pericarp, the MGT depended on seed mass, with smaller seeds germinating more rapidly than larger seeds. CONCLUSIONS: The distinct responses of germination to flowering time and seed mass observed in seeds with and without pericarp suggest that germination strategies might be mother-reliant for seeds protected by pericarps but self-reliant for those without such protection. This novel finding improves our understanding of seed germination by integrating ecologically mediated maternal conditions and inherent genetic properties.

RESUMO

Urbanization is increasing worldwide, with major impacts on biodiversity, species interactions and ecosystem functioning. Pollination is an ecosystem function vital for terrestrial ecosystems and food security; however, the processes underlying the patterns of pollinator diversity and the ecosystem services they provide in cities have seldom been quantified. Here, we perform a comprehensive meta-analysis of 133 studies examining the effects of urbanization on pollinators and pollination. Our results confirm the widespread negative impacts of urbanization on pollinator richness and abundance, with Lepidoptera being the most affected group. Furthermore, pollinator responses were found to be trait-specific, with below-ground nesting and solitary Hymenoptera, and spring flyers more severely affected by urbanization. Meanwhile, cities promote non-native pollinators, which may exacerbate conservation risks to native species. Surprisingly, despite the negative effects of urbanization on pollinator diversity, pollination service measured as seed set is enhanced in non-tropical cities likely due to abundant generalists and managed pollinators therein. We emphasize that the richness of local flowering plants could mitigate the negative impacts of urbanization on pollinator diversity. Overall, the results demonstrate the varying magnitudes of multiple moderators on urban pollinators and pollination services and could help guide conservation actions for biodiversity and ecosystem function for a sustainable future.

RESUMO

Pollinators mediate interspecific and intraspecific plant-plant indirect interactions (competition vs. facilitation) via density-dependent processes, potentially shaping the dynamics of plant communities. However, it is still unclear which ecological drivers regulate density-dependent patterns, including scale, pollination niches (i.e., the main pollinator functional group) and floral attractiveness to pollinators. In this study, we conducted three-year field observations in Hengduan Mountains of southwest China. By gathering data for more than 100 animal-pollinated plant species, we quantified the effect (positive vs. negative) of conspecific and heterospecific flower density on pollination at two scales: plot-level (4 m2) and site-level (100-5000 m2). Then, we investigated how pollination niches and floral attractiveness to pollinators (estimated here as average per-flower visitation rates) modulated density-dependent pollination interactions. Pollinator visitation depended on conspecific and heterospecific flower density, with rare plants subjected to interspecific competition at the plot-level and interspecific facilitation at the site-level. Such interspecific competition at the plot-level was stronger for plants pollinated by diverse insects, while interspecific facilitation at the site-level was stronger for bee-pollinated plants. Moreover, we also found stronger positive conspecific density-dependence for plants with lower floral attractiveness at the site-level, meaning that they become more frequently visited when abundant. Our study indicates that the role of pollination in maintaining rare plants and plant diversity depends on the balance of density-dependent processes in species-rich communities. We show here that such balance is modulated by scale, pollination niches and floral attractiveness to pollinators, indicating the context-dependency of diversity maintenance mechanisms.

RESUMO

Pediatric acute liver failure (PALF) due to mushroom poisoning is a rare and life-threatening disease. There is no specific treatment. Plasma exchange (PE) is often used as a bridge to the regeneration of the liver or transplantation. However, PE is limited due to an inadequate plasma supply and transfusion-related risks. The double plasma molecular adsorption system (DPMAS) can adsorb toxins, including bilirubin and inflammatory mediators. However, the DPMAS cannot improve coagulation disorders. Combining PE and the DPMAS could compensate for the shortcomings of the two techniques. A previous study showed that the combination might be more effective than using PE or the DPMAS alone in patients with mild acute-on-chronic liver failure. To the best of our knowledge, few studies combined PE and the DPMAS for the treatment of PALF due to mushroom poisoning. Here, we specifically describe our experience with PE and the DPMAS in PALF. In conclusion, our study shows that the DPMAS and PE are safe and effective in reducing the bilirubin level and improving blood coagulation in PALF due to mushroom poisoning as a bridge to transplantation or recovery.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Diaphragmatic dysfunction (DD) has a great negative impact on clinical outcomes, and it is a well-recognized complication in adult patients with critical illness. However, DD is largely unexplored in the critically ill pediatric population. The aim of this study was to identify risk factors associated with DD, and to investigate the effects of DD on clinical outcomes among critically ill children. METHODS: Diaphragmatic function was assessed by diaphragm ultrasound. According to the result of diaphragmatic ultrasound, all enrolled subjects were categorized into the DD group (n = 24) and the non-DD group (n = 46). Collection of sample characteristics in both groups include age, sex, height, weight, primary diagnosis, complications, laboratory findings, medications, ventilatory time and clinical outcomes. RESULTS: The incidence of DD in this PICU was 34.3%. The level of CRP at discharge (P = 0.003) in the DD group was higher than the non-DD group, and duration of elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) (P < 0.001), sedative days (P = 0.008) and ventilatory treatment time (P < 0.001) in the DD group was significantly longer than the non-DD group. Ventilatory treatment time and duration of elevated CRP were independently risk factors associated with DD. Patients in the DD group had longer PICU length of stay, higher rate of weaning or extubation failure and higher mortality. CONCLUSION: DD is associated with poorer clinical outcomes in critically ill childern, which include a longer PICU length of stay, higher rate of weaning or extubation failure and a higher mortality. The ventilatory treatment time and duration of elevated CRP are main risk factors of DD in critically ill children. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Pediatric acute liver failure is a rare, life-threatening illness. Mushroom poisoning is a rare etiology. For patients with irreversible pediatric acute liver failure, liver transplantation is the ultimate lifesaving therapy. However, it is difficult to determine the optimal timing of transplantation. Here, we present a case of pediatric acute liver failure due to mushroom poisoning in northeastern China. He was treated with liver transplantation and recovered. To our knowledge, there are few reports about liver transplantation for pediatric acute liver failure caused by mushroom poisoning in mainland China. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a previously healthy 9-year-old boy who gradually developed nausea, vomiting, jaundice and coma within 5 days after ingesting mushrooms. He was diagnosed with mushroom poisoning and acute liver failure. He was treated with conservative care but still deteriorated. On the 7th day after poisoning, he underwent LT due to grade IV hepatic encephalopathy. Twenty days later, he recovered and was discharged. A review of the literature revealed that the specific criteria and optimal timing of transplantation remain to be determined. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with pediatric acute liver failure should be transferred to a center with a transplant unit early. Once conservative treatment fails, liver transplantation should be performed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Increasing studies have focused on motor function/dysfunction in PICU survivors; however, most studies have focused on adults and older children. This study investigated gross motor developmental function outcomes in infantile and toddler pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) survivors and the factors associated with gross motor developmental functions. METHODS: This observational study was conducted in the PICU of the First Hospital of Jilin University between January 2019 and March 2019. Thirty-five eligible patients were divided into the dysfunctional (n = 24) or non-dysfunctional (n = 11) group according to the results of the Peabody Developmental Motor Scales, Second Edition (PDMS-2). Baseline gross motor function for all participants before PICU admission was measured via the Age and Stages Questionnaires, Third Edition (ASQ-3). The PDMS-2 was used to evaluate gross motor development function before PICU discharge. RESULTS: The gross motor developmental dysfunction incidence was 68.6%. Linear correlation analysis showed that the gross motor quotient (GMQ) was positively correlated with the pediatric critical illness score (PCIS, r = 0.621, P < 0.001), and negatively correlated with length of PICU stay (r = - 0.556, P = 0.001), days sedated (r = - 0.602, P < 0.001), days on invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV; r = - 0.686, P < 0.001), and days on continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT; r = - 0.538, P = 0.001). Linear regression analysis showed that IMV days (ß = - 0.736, P = 0.001), sepsis (ß = - 18.111, P = 0.003) and PCIS (ß = 0.550, P = 0.021) were independent risk factors for gross motor developmental dysfunction. CONCLUSIONS: Gross motor developmental dysfunction in infantile and toddler PICU survivors is more common and may be exacerbated by experiences associated with longer IMV days and increasing illness severity combined with sepsis. RESUMO

Di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) has been considered as an estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) agonist due to its ability to interact with ERα and promote the cell proliferation of ERα-positive breast cancer cells. The impact of DEHP on the chemical therapy in breast cancer is little known. Two breast cancer cell lines, MCF-7 (ERα-dependent) and MDA-MB-231 (ERα-independent) were examined. We found that DEHP impaired the effectiveness of camptothecin (CPT) and alleviated the CPT-induced formation of reactive oxygen species in ERα-positive MCF-7 cells, but not in ERα-negative MDA-MB-231 cells. DEHP also significantly protected MCF-7 cells against the genotoxicity of CPT. Genome-wide DNA methylation profiling revealed that after 48 hours of exposure to 100 µM DEHP, MCF-7 cells exhibited a significant change in their DNA methylation pattern, including hypermethylation of 700 genes and hypomethylation of 221 genes. The impaired therapeutic response to CPT in DEHP-exposed MCF-7 cells is probably mediated by epigenetic changes, especially through Wnt/ß-catenin signaling. A zebrafish xenograft model confirmed the disruptive effect of DEHP on CPT-induced anti-growth of MCF-7 cells. In summary, DEHP exposure induces acquired CPT-resistance in breast cancer cells and epigenetic changes associated with Wnt/ß-catenin signaling activation are probably depending on an ER-positive status.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a versatile pathogen found in many environments and can cause nosocomial infections in the community and hospitals. S. aureus infection is an increasingly serious threat to global public health that requires action across many government bodies, medical and health sectors, and scientific research institutions. METHODS: In the present study, S. aureus N315 genes that have been shown in the literature to be pathogenic were extracted using a bibliometric method for functional enrichment analysis of pathways and operons to statistically discover novel pathogenic genes associated with S. aureus N315. RESULTS: A total of 383 pathogenic genes were mined from the literature using bibliometrics, and subsequently a few new pathogenic genes of S. aureus N315 were identified by functional enrichment analysis of pathways and operons. CONCLUSIONS: The discovery of these novel S. aureus N315 pathogenic genes is of great significance to treat S. aureus induced diseases and identify potential diagnostic markers, thus providing theoretical fundamentals for epidemiological prevention.

RESUMO

Background and Aims: It has been suggested that the dynamics of nectar replenishment could differ for flowers after being nectar robbed or visited legitimately, but further experimental work is needed to investigate this hypothesis. This study aimed to assess the role of nectar replenishment in mediating the effects of nectar robbing on pollinator behaviour and plant reproduction. Methods: Plant-robber-pollinator interactions in an alpine plant, Salvia przewalskii , were studied. It is pollinated by long-tongued Bombus religiosus and short-tongued B. friseanus , but robbed by B. friseanus . Nectar production rates for flowers after they were either robbed or legitimately visited were compared, and three levels of nectar robbing were created to detect the effects of nectar robbing on pollinator behaviour and plant reproduction. Key Results: Nectar replenishment did not differ between flowers that had been robbed or legitimately visited. Neither fruit set nor seed set was significantly affected by nectar robbing. In addition, nectar robbing did not significantly affect visitation rate, flowers visited within a plant per foraging bout, or flower handling time of the legitimate pollinators. However, a tendency for a decrease in relative abundance of the pollinator B. religiosus with an increase of nectar robbing was found. Conclusions: Nectar robbing did not affect female reproductive success because nectar replenishment ensures that pollinators maintain their visiting activity to nectar-robbed flowers. Nectar replenishment might be a defence mechanism against nectar robbing to enhance reproductive fitness by maintaining attractiveness to pollinators. Further studies are needed to reveal the potential for interference competition among bumble bees foraging as robbers and legitimate visitors, and to investigate variation of nectar robbing in communities with different bumble bee species composition.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the role of cytokeratin-19 fragment (CYFRA21-1) in cervical lesions screening in high-risk hu-man papillomavirus (HR-HPV) infected women. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was a retrospective study. First, the results of CYFRA21-1, cytology (TCT), and HR-HPV examinations of 1039 outpatients from gynecology department in Tumor Hospital Affiliated to Xinjiang Medical University were collected. Then, the data was analyzed using a series of statistical methods. RESULTS: There was a correlation between CYFRA21-1 levels and HPV-DNA load in HR-HPV infected women (rs = 0.711, p = 0.015). CYFRA21-1 levels and positive rate increased along with deepening of cervical cell lesions. In HR-HPV infected women, there was a statistically significant difference (t = 6.022, p < 0.001) in CYFRA21-1 levels between the group with cytological lesions (4.87 ± 1.58 ng/mL) and the group with normal cytology (2.52 ± 0.96 ng/mL). Positive rates of CYFRA21-1 in the two groups were 62.06% and 7.83%, respectively, and also exhibited statistically significant differences (χ2 = 74.624, p < 0.001). When diagnosing cytological lesions via CYFRA21-1 in HR-HPV infected women, sensitivity was 62.07%, specificity was 92.17%, positive predictive value was 88.89%,negative predictive value was 70.67%. Compared to CYFRA21-1 negative women, cytological lesions were detected 19.273 times more often in CYFRA21-1 positive women. CONCLUSION: CYFRA21-1 could provide a reference idea for further diagnosis of women who are infected with HR-HPV but whose cytology is normal.

RESUMO

Resource partitioning is considered a key factor in alleviating competitive interactions, enabling coexistence among consumer species. However, most studies have focused on resource partitioning between species, ignoring the potentially critical role of intraspecific variation in resource use. We investigated floral resource partitioning across species, colonies, and individuals in a species-rich bumblebee community in the diversification center of bumblebees. We used a total of 10,598 bumblebees belonging to 13 species across 5 years in the Hengduan Mountains of southwest China. First, we evaluated the influence of a comprehensive set of floral traits, including both those related to attractiveness (flower color and shape) and rewards (pollen, sugar ratio, nectar volume, sugar concentration, and amino acid content) on resource partitioning at the species level in bumblebee-plant networks. Then, we explored intraspecific resource partitioning on the colony and individual levels. Our results suggest that bumblebee species differ substantially in their use of the available floral resources, and that this mainly depends on flower attractiveness (floral color and shape). Interestingly, we also detected floral resource partitioning at the colony level within all commonest bumblebee species evaluated. In general, floral resource partitioning between bumblebee individuals decreased with species- and individual-level variation in body size (intertegular span). These results suggest that bumblebee species may coexist via the flexibility in their preferences for specific floral traits, which filters up to support the co-occurrence of high numbers of species and individuals in this global hotspot of species richness.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Plants surrounded by individuals of other co-flowering species may suffer a reproductive cost from interspecific pollen transfer (IPT). However, differences in floral architecture may reduce or eliminate IPT. METHODS: A study was made of Pedicularis densispica (lousewort) and its common co-flowering species, Astragalus pastorius, to compare reproductive and pollination success of lousewort plants from pure and mixed patches. Floral architecture and pollinator behaviour on flowers of the two plants were compared along with the composition of stigmatic pollen load of the louseworts. The extent of pollen limitation of plants from pure and mixed patches was also explored through supplemental pollination with self- and outcross pollen (PLs and PLx). KEY RESULTS: Mixed patches attracted many more nectar-searching individuals of Bombus richardsi. These bumble-bees moved frequently between flowers of the two species. However, they pollinated P. densispica with their dorsum and A. pastorius with their abdomen. This difference in handling almost completely eliminated IPT. Lousewort plants from mixed patches yielded more seeds, and seeds of higher mass and germinability, than those from pure patches. Moreover, louseworts from mixed patches had lower PLs and PLx compared with those from pure patches. CONCLUSIONS: Differences in floral architecture induced differences in pollinator behaviour that minimized IPT, such that co-flowering plants significantly enhanced quantity and quality of pollinator visits for the lousewort plants in patchy habitat. These findings add to our understanding of the mechanisms of pollination facilitation.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To ascertain the clinical characteristics of pediatric patients with contactin-associated protein-like 2 (CASPR2) antibody-associated autoimmune encephalitis (AEs). METHODS: Two cases of CASPR2 antibody-associated AEs have been reported. In addition, a systematic search of literature published between January 2010 and March 2022 through six online databases was conducted to identify the pediatric patients with CASPR2 antibody-associated AEs. Data on demographics, clinical symptoms, laboratory examinations, imaging, treatment, and outcome were collected. RESULTS: Our updated literature search yielded 1,837 publications, of which 21 were selected, and 40 patients in this study met the diagnostic criteria for AE. There were 25 males and 15 females with a mean age of 9.2 years. The most common presenting symptoms are psychiatric symptoms (72.5%), sleep changes (62.5%), and movement disorders (60%). The psychiatric symptoms included mood changes (39.1%), behavior changes (25%), and hallucination (7.5%). In total, 23 cases (57.5%) combined with autonomic dysfunction, such as gastrointestinal dysmotility, cardiovascular-related symptoms, and sweating. No tumors were observed in children. Thirty-eight patients received first-line immunotherapy, and eight received first-line and second-line immunotherapy. All patients had a good clinical response to immune therapy. Mean mRS at onset was 3.4; It was 0.88 at the last follow-up. There was no recurrence during follow-up. CONCLUSION: Psychiatric symptoms, sleep disorders, movement disorders, and cardiovascular-related symptoms are the most common presentation in pediatric patients with CASPR2 antibody-associated AEs. Tumor, particularly with thymoma, is uncommon in children diagnosed with CASPR2 antibody-associated AEs. In addition, prompt diagnosis and immunotherapy can relieve symptoms and improve the prognosis.

RESUMO

Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (anti-NMDAR) encephalitis is the most commonly identified cause of autoimmune encephalitis. Therapeutic plasma exchange has been increasingly employed to treat this disease. This expansion is a consequence of improved techniques and apheresis instruments, as well as the recognition of its applicability in neurological diseases. However, several aspects of treatment remain incompletely clarified, and treatment strategies are still heterogeneous, especially with regard to therapeutic plasma exchange in anti-NMDAR encephalitis. This review provides an overview of the use of therapeutic plasma exchange including the principle and mechanisms, the evidence, initial time, efficiency and complications in anti-NMDAR encephalitis.

RESUMO

Pollinator-mediated selection is supposed to influence floral integration. However, the potential pathway through which pollinators drive floral integration needs further investigations. We propose that pollinator proboscis length may play a key role in the evolution of floral integration. We first assessed the divergence of floral traits in 11 Lonicera species. Further, we detected the influence of pollinator proboscis length and eight floral traits on floral integration. We then used phylogenetic structural equation models (PSEMs) to illustrate the pathway through which pollinators drive the divergence of floral integration. Results of PCA indicated that species significantly differed in floral traits. Floral integration increased along with corolla tube length, stigma height, lip length, and the main pollinators' proboscis length. PSEMs revealed a potential pathway by which pollinator proboscis length directly selected on corolla tube length and stigma height, while lip length co-varied with stigma height. Compared to species with short corolla tubes, long-tube flowers may experience more intense pollinator-mediated selection due to more specialized pollination systems and thus reduce variation in the floral traits. Along elongation of corolla tube and stigma height, the covariation of other relevant traits might help to maintain pollination success. The direct and indirect pollinator-mediation selection collectively enhances floral integration.

RESUMO

Floral trait variation may help pollinators and nectar robbers identify their target plants and, thus, lead to differential selection pressure for defense capability against floral antagonists. However, the effect of floral trait variation among individuals within a population on multi-dimensional plant-animal interactions has been little explored. We investigated floral trait variation, pollination, and nectar robbing among individual plants in a population of the bumble bee-pollinated plant, Caryopteris divaricata, from which flowers are also robbed by bumble bees with varying intensity across individuals. We measured the variation in corolla tube length, nectar volume and sugar concentration among individual plants, and evaluated whether the variation were recognized by pollinators and robbers. We investigated the influence of nectar robbing on legitimate visitation and seed production per fruit. We found that the primary nectar robber (Bombus nobilis) preferred to forage on plants with long-tubed flowers, which produced less nectar and had lower sugar concentration compared to those with shorter corolla tubes. Individuals with shorter corolla tubes had comparatively lower nectar robbing intensity but higher visitation by legitimate visitors (mainly B. picipes) and higher seed production. Nectar robbing significantly reduced seed production because it decreased pollinator visits. However, neither pollination nor seed production differed between plants with long and short corolla tubes when nectar robbers were excluded. This finding suggests that floral trait variation might not be driven by pollinators. Such variation among individual plants thus allows legitimate visitors and nectar robbers to segregate niches and enhances population defense against nectar robbing in unpredictable conditions.

RESUMO

During percutaneous coronary intervention, the guiding catheter plays an important role. Tracking the catheter tip placed at the coronary ostium in the X-ray fluoroscopy sequence can obtain image displacement information caused by the heart beating, which can help dynamic coronary roadmap overlap on X-ray fluoroscopy images. Due to a low exposure dose, the X-ray fluoroscopy is noisy and low contrast, which causes some difficulties in tracking. In this paper, we developed a new catheter tip tracking framework. First, a lightweight efficient catheter tip segmentation network is proposed and boosted by a self-distillation training mechanism. Then, the Bayesian filtering post-processing method is used to consider the sequence information to refine the single image segmentation results. By separating the segmentation results into several groups based on connectivity, our framework can track multiple catheter tips. The proposed tracking framework is validated on a clinical X-ray sequence dataset.

RESUMO

Background: We aimed to assess the efficacy of the artificial liver support system (ALSS) in pediatric acute liver failure (PALF) patients and to examine the risk factors associated with the effect of ALSS. Similar data are limited in PALF. Methods: All patients diagnosed with PALF who received ALSS from June 2011 to June 2021 in the pediatric intensive care unit of the First Hospital of Jilin University were included in this retrospective cohort analysis. The effect of ALSS was measured using difference tests before and after treatments. The risk factors associated with the effect of ALSS were evaluated according to whether the total bilirubin (TBIL) and serum ammonia decreased after ALSS (TBIL-unresponsive group vs. TBIL-responsive group, serum ammonia-unresponsive group vs. serum ammonia-responsive group). Results: Thirty-nine patients who received ALSS during the study period were eligible for inclusion. The most common cause of PALF was undetermined causes (n = 14, 35.9%) followed by infection (n = 11, 28.2%). Four patients received pediatric liver transplantation. The overall survival rate was 76.9% (30/39). Fifteen (38.4%) patients received only one modality, whereas 61.6% patients received hybrid treatments. The most commonly used modality of ALSS was plasma exchange combined with continuous renal replacement therapy (n = 14, 35.9%). Alanine aminotransferase, TBIL, the international normalized ratio, and serum ammonia were significantly decreased after ALSS (P < 0.001). Compared with other causes, more patients with infection and toxication were observed in the TBIL-unresponsive group. A longer ALSS duration was significantly related to blood ammonia reduction. Conclusions: ALSS can effectively reduce serum alanine aminotransferase, TBIL, international normalized ratio, and serum ammonia and may reduce mortality. The reduction in TBIL levels after ALSS is dependent on etiology. A longer ALSS duration was associated with blood ammonia reduction. Prospective multicenter studies are needed for further validation.

RESUMO

Biodiversity loss during the Anthropocene is a serious ecological challenge. Pollinators are important vectors that provide multiple essential ecosystem services but are declining rapidly in this changing world. However, several studies have argued that a high abundance of managed bee pollinators, such as honeybees (Apis mellifera), may be sufficient to provide pollination services for crop productivity, and sociological studies indicate that the majority of farmers worldwide do not recognize the contribution of wild pollinator diversity to agricultural yield. Here, we review the importance of pollinator diversity in natural and agricultural ecosystems that may be thwarted by the increase in abundance of managed pollinators such as honeybees. We also emphasize the additional roles diverse pollinator communities play in environmental safety, culture, and aesthetics. Research indicates that in natural ecosystems, pollinator diversity enhances pollination during environmental and climatic perturbations, thus alleviating pollen limitation. In agricultural ecosystems, pollinator diversity increases the quality and quantity of crop yield. Furthermore, studies indicate that many pollinator groups are useful in monitoring environmental pollution, aid in pest and disease control, and provide cultural and aesthetic value. During the uncertainties that may accompany rapid environmental changes in the Anthropocene, the conservation of pollinator diversity must expand beyond bee conservation. Similarly, the value of pollinator diversity maintenance extends beyond the provision of pollination services. Accordingly, conservation of pollinator diversity requires an interdisciplinary approach with contributions from environmentalists, taxonomists, and social scientists, including artists, who can shape opinions and behavior.
