RESUMO
This study was performed to compare the treatment status between older (≥65 years) and younger adults (18-64 years) with severe mental illness (SMI) and explore factors associated with treatment status in rural China. Persons with SMI were identified in one mental health survey in 2015 in 6 townships of Xinjin County, Chengdu, China. Logistic regressions were conducted to explore factors associated with treatment status. Older adults with SMI, especially major depressive disorder, reported significantly lower rates of treatment than younger group. Older age, longer duration of illness, and poor mental status were risk factors for never-treated status in these patients. Never-treated status (46.3%) and poor treatment status in these older patients are serious issues. Different treatment statuses in these patients had various influencing factors. It is crucial to develop culture-specific, community-based mental health services to improve early identification, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery of older adults with SMI in rural China.

Self-incompatibility (SI) is a type of reproductive barrier within plant species and is one of the mechanisms for the formation and maintenance of the high diversity and adaptation of angiosperm species. Approximately 40% of flowering plants are SI species, while only 10% of orchid species are self-incompatible. Intriguingly, as one of the largest genera in Orchidaceae, 72% of Dendrobium species are self-incompatible, accounting for nearly half of the reported SI species in orchids, suggesting that SI contributes to the high diversity of orchid species. However, few studies investigating SI in Dendrobium have been published. This study aimed to address the following questions: (1) How many SI phenotypes are in Dendrobium, and what are they? (2) What is their distribution pattern in the Dendrobium phylogenetic tree? We investigated the flowering time, the capsule set rate, and the pollen tube growth from the representative species of Dendrobium after artificial pollination and analysed their distribution in the Asian Dendrobium clade phylogenetic tree. The number of SI phenotypes exceeded our expectations. The SI type of Dendrobium chrysanthum was the primary type in the Dendrobium SI species. We speculate that there are many different SI determinants in Dendrobium that have evolved recently and might be specific to Dendrobium or Orchidaceae. Overall, this work provides new insights and a comprehensive understanding of Dendrobium SI.

Background: This study was intended to construct a brand new prognostic nomogram after combine clinical and pathological characteristics to increases prognostic value in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Methods: A total of 1,634 patients were included. Subsequently, the tumor tissues of all patients were prepared into tissue microarrays. AIPATHWELL software was employed to explore tissue microarrays and calculate the tumor-stroma ratio. X-tile was adopted to find the optimal cut-off value. Univariate and multivariate Cox analyses were used to screen out remarkable characteristics for constructing the nomogram in the total populations. A novel prognostic nomogram with clinical and pathological characteristics was constructed on the basis of the training cohort (n=1,144). What's more performance was validated in the validation cohort (n=490). Clinical-pathological nomogram were assessed by concordance index, time-dependent receiver operating characteristic, calibration curve and decision curve analysis. Results: The patients can divide into two groups with cut-off value of 69.78 for the tumor-stroma ratio. It is noteworthy that the survival difference was noticeable (P<0.001). A clinical-pathological nomogram was constructed by combining clinical and pathological characteristics to predict the overall survival. In comparison with TNM stage, the concordance index and time-dependent receiver operating characteristic of the clinical-pathological nomogram showed better predictive value (P<0.001). High quality of calibration plots in overall survival was noticed. As demonstrated by the decision curve analysis, the nomogram has better value than the TNM stage. Conclusions: As evidently revealed by the research findings, tumor-stroma ratio is an independent prognostic factor in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. The clinical-pathological nomogram has an incremental value compared TNM stage in predicting overall survival.
RESUMO
Enhancing water use efficiency (WUE) is the key approach to maintain sustainable water resource supply. Due to the complexity of the water cycle, accurate estimation of WUE at the regional scale is a challenging task. Here we presented a framework of relative water use efficiency (RWUE). According to the linkage between RWUE and land use types, assessment of WUE at a regional scale could be performed operationally. This approach was evaluated in a study area, Tuhai-Majia Basin, North China. Based on remote sensing-derived evapotranspiration (ET) and land use data, regional WUE were assessed accordingly. The mean RWUE of agriculture, ecosystem and total basin in 2005 was 60.12, 30.07 and 62.5%, respectively. Spatial analysis showed that the agricultural WUE played the dominant role in water-saving of the study area; water management of unused land (RWUE of 2005 was 5.46%), especially wetland protection and other unused land development, will contribute significantly to ecological RWUE improvement. Temporal analysis indicated that there was considerable inter-annual variability in RWUE time series profiles. The agricultural interlude period might be important for enhancing WUE in the Tuhai-Majia Basin. In general, the results indicated that the RWUE-based method was an efficient and simple method to evaluate WUE at regional scale.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of blindness and moderate and severe visual impairment among adults aged 50 years or above in Ji'an county of Jiangxi province, China. METHODS: It was a population-based cross-section study. Geographically defined cluster sampling was used in 5402 randomly selected individuals aged ≥ 50 years in 28 clusters in Ji'an from September to November 2006. The survey was preceded by a pilot study where operational methods were refined and quality assurance evaluation was carried out. All participants were enumerated through village registers followed door-to-door visits. Eligible individuals were invited to receive visual acuity measurement and eye examination. Statistical analyses were performed using Stata/SE Statistical Software, release 9.0. Chi-square test was used to investigate the association of age, gender and education with presenting and best corrected visual acuity. RESULTS: Five thousands four hundreds and two individuals were enumerated and 5010 persons were examined, the response rate was 92.74%. Based on the criteria of World Health Organization visual impairment classification in 1973, 78 persons were diagnosed as blindness, 265 persons were diagnosed as moderate and severe visual impairment defined as best corrected visual acuity, the prevalence of blindness and moderate and severe visual impairment were 1.56% and 5.29% respectively. Ninety-four persons were diagnosed as blindness, 726 persons were diagnosed as moderate and severe visual impairment defined as presenting visual acuity, the prevalence of blindness and moderate and severe visual impairment defined as presenting visual acuity was 1.88% and 14.50% respectively. The prevalence of blindness and moderate and severe visual impairment was higher in aged (trend χ(2) = 970.15, P = 0.000), female (χ(2) = 89.81, P = 0.000), and illiterate persons (trend χ(2) = 241.85, P = 0.000). Cataract was still the first leading cause of blindness and visual impairment, the retinal diseases was the second. Un-corrected refractive error also was the main cause of visual impairment. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of blindness and moderate and severe visual impairment was higher than other district in China. The first leading cause of blindness and visual impairment is still cataract.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of cataract, the outcomes of cataract surgery, cataract surgical coverage rate, cataract blindness social burden rate in Ji'an county of Jiangxi province, China. METHODS: Cluster sampling was used in randomly selected 5010 individuals aged ≥ 50 years in Ji'an county of Jiangxi province. All individuals were received visual acuity and eye examination, including the evaluation of lens status and cataract surgical status by slit lamp biomicroscopy. Data bank was established by Epi-info Software. Statistical analyses were performed using Stata/SE Statistical Software, release 9.0 (Stata Corp, College Station, TX). Confidence intervals and P values (considered significance at the P < 0.05 level) for prevalence of cataract, cataract surgical coverage rate, cataract blindness social burden rate and outcomes of surgery were calculated with adjustment for clustering effects and stratification associated with the sampling design. RESULTS: In 5010 individuals, 1158 cases of cataract were found, the prevalence of cataract was 23.11% among adults aged 50 or above. The prevalence of cataract was higher in the aged, female (P < 0.01). In 99 eyes with cataract surgery, 50.51% and 5.05% of eyes were performed by the modern extra-capsular surgery and phacoemulsification respectively. The rate of intraocular lens implantation was 55.56%. Post-operative presenting and best corrected visual acuity equal to or more than 0.7 was 10.1% and 45.5% of operated eyes respectively. The main causes of the post-operated eyes with worse visual acuity were post-capsular opacity and refractive error. The cataract surgical coverage rate was 32.29%, and the cataract blindness social burden rate was 3.83%. The cataract surgical rate was lower and cataract blindness social burden rate was higher in the aged persons (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Cataract is the most common eye disease that may lead into blindness and severe visual impairment among older adults aged equal or more than 50 years. The cataract surgical coverage rate is not high but the cataract blindness social burden rate is heavy in Ji'an county. The rate of intraocular lens implantation need increase and the visual outcomes of the surgery should be further improved in the future.

BACKGROUND: Gastric cardia adenocarcinoma (GCA), which has been classified as type II adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction in western countries, is of similar geographic distribution with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in China, and even referred as "sister cancer" by Chinese oncologists. The molecular mechanism for GCA is largely unknown. Recent studies have shown that decreased expression of E-cadherin is associated with the invasion and metastasis of multiple cancers. However, the E-cadherin expression has not been well characterized in gastric cardia carcinogenesis and its effect on GCA prognosis. AIM: To characterize E-cadherin expression in normal gastric cardia mucosa, dysplasia and GCA tissues, and its influence on prognosis for GCA. METHODS: A total of 4561 patients with GCA were enrolled from our previously established GCA and esophageal cancer databases. The enrollment criteria included radical surgery for GCA, but without any radio- or chemo-therapy before operation. The GCA tissue from 4561 patients and matched adjacent normal epithelial tissue (n = 208) and dysplasia lesions (n = 156) were collected, and processed as tissue microarray for immunohistochemistry. The clinicopathological characteristics were retrieved from the medical records in hospital and follow-up was carried out through letter, telephone or home interview. E-cadherin protein expression was determined by two step immunohistochemistry. Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analyses were used to correlate E-cadherin protein expression with survival of GCA patients. RESULTS: Of the 4561 GCA patients, there were 3607 males with a mean age of 61.6 ± 8.8 and 954 females with a mean age of 61.9 ± 8.6 years, respectively. With the lesions progressed from normal gastric cardia mucosa to dysplasia and GCA, the positive immunostaining rates for E-cadherin decreased significantly from 100% to 93.0% and 84.1%, respectively (R2 = 0.9948). Furthermore, E-cadherin positive immunostaining rate was significantly higher in patients at early stage (0 and I) than in those at late stage (II and III) (92.7% vs 83.7%, P = 0.001). E-cadherin positive expression rate was significantly associated with degree of differentiation (P = 0.001) and invasion depth (P < 0.001). Multivariate analysis showed that the GCA patients with positive E-cadherin immunostaining had better survival than those with negative (P = 0.026). It was noteworthy that E-cadherin positive expression rate was similar in patients with positive and negative lymph node metastasis. However, in patients with negative lymph node metastasis, those with positive expression of E-cadherin had better survival than those with negative expression (P = 0.036). Similarly, in patients with late stage GCA, those with positive expression of E-cadherin had better survival than those with negative expression (P = 0.011). CONCLUSION: E-cadherin expression may be involved in gastric cardia carcinogenesis and low expression of E-cadherin may be a promising early biomarker and overall survival predictor for GCA.
RESUMO
Background: The impact of hospital volume on the long-term survival of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) has not been well assessed in China, especially for stage I-III stage ESCC. We performed a large sample size study to assess the relationships between hospital volume and the effectiveness of ESCC treatment and the hospital volume value at the lowest risk of all-cause mortality after esophagectomy in China. Aim: To investigate the prognostic value of hospital volume for assessing postoperative long-term survival of ESCC patients in China. Methods: The date of 158,618 patients with ESCC were collected from a database (1973-2020) established by the State Key Laboratory for Esophageal Cancer Prevention and Treatment, the database includes 500,000 patients with detailed clinical information of pathological diagnosis and staging, treatment approaches and survival follow-up for esophageal and gastric cardia cancers. Intergroup comparisons of patient and treatment characteristics were conducted with the X2 test and analysis of variance. The Kaplan-Meier method with the log-rank test was used to draw the survival curves for the variables tested. A Multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to analyze the independent prognostic factors for overall survival. The relationship between hospital volume and all-cause mortality was assessed using restricted cubic splines from Cox proportional hazards models. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality. Results: In both 1973-1996 and 1997-2020, patients with stage I-III stage ESCC who underwent surgery in high volume hospitals had better survival than those who underwent surgery in low volume hospitals (both P<0.05). And high volume hospital was an independent factor for better prognosis in ESCC patients. The relationship between hospital volume and the risk of all-cause mortality was half-U-shaped, but overall, hospital volume was a protective factor for esophageal cancer patients after surgery (HR<1). The concentration of hospital volume associated with the lowest risk of all-cause mortality was 1027 cases/year in the overall enrolled patients. Conclusion: Hospital volume can be used as an indicator to predict the postoperative survival of ESCC patients. Our results suggest that the centralized management of esophageal cancer surgery is meaningful to improve the survival of ESCC patients in China, but the hospital volume should preferably not be higher than 1027 cases/year. Core tip: Hospital volume is considered to be a prognostic factor for many complex diseases. However, the impact of hospital volume on long-term survival after esophagectomy has not been well evaluated in China. Based on a large sample size of 158,618 ESCC patients in China spanning 47 years (1973-2020), We found that hospital volume can be used as a predictor of postoperative survival in patients with ESCC, and identified hospital volume thresholds with the lowest risk of death from all causes. This may provide an important basis for patients to choose hospitals and have a significant impact on the centralized management of hospital surgery.
RESUMO
OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the mechanism of carcinogenesis induced by coke oven emissions by investigating the cell genetic damage index and the methylation of O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT). METHODS: The human bronchial epithelial cell 16HBE was treated by 1 µmol/L B(a)P for 48 h, and then was exposed continuously to either 1 dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) or organic extracts of coke oven emission (OE-COE) for five days at the concentrations of 0, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0 and 20.0 µg/ml. The methylation-specific PCR (MSP-PCR), RT-PCR and immunoblotting were applied to detect the methylation status, changes of mRNA and protein of MGMT, respectively. Single cell gel electrophoresis was used to detect DNA damage induced by OE-COE. RESULTS: Compared with the control group (DMSO), there was a significant hypermethylation in all study groups, along with the suppression of mRNA and protein in a dose-dependent manner, and the gradation ratio of them was 1.0, 0.96, 0.96, 0.85, 0.32 and 1.0, 1.0, 1.1, 0.41, 0.52, separately. There was a significant DNA damage with a dose-effect relationship in all study groups (F = 41.22, P < 0.05), and the comet Olive tail moment was (2.98 ± 1.43), (4.76 ± 1.79), (10.09 ± 1.75), (11.38 ± 1.77), (11.67 ± 1.88). The further study found that the index of DNA damage was negatively correlated to the expression of MGMT mRNA and its protein. CONCLUSION: The DNA damage induced by COE might be associated with the suppression of MGMT caused by its hypermethylation.

Background: We investigated whether ADAMTS9-AS2 and CADM2 were related to esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Methodology: ESCC microarray datasets and reverse transcriptase qualitative PCR were used to analyze ADAMTS9-AS2 and CADM2 expression. Results: The GSE120356 and GSE33810 datasets identified ADAMTS9-AS2 and CADM2 as the candidates and ADAMTS9-AS2 and CADM2 expression was downregulated in ESCC. ADAMTS9-AS2 and CADM2 were positively correlated with ESCC. ADAMTS9-AS2 and CADM2 expression could discriminate ESCC from normal tissue. Five-year overall survival was shorter in underexpressed ADAMTS9-AS2 patients, and CADM2 expression level was related to 5-year overall survival. ADAMTS9-AS2 and CADM2 expression were independent prognosis indicators in ESCC patients. Conclusion: Our findings shed new light on the clinical significance of ADAMTS9-AS2 and CADM2 in ESCC carcinogenesis.

Piwi-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) dysregulation occurs frequently in extensive cancers. However, there was no report about piRNA expression in esophageal cancer (EC). In this study, the expression levels of piR-823 and DNMT1, DNMT3A, DNMT3B were detected in 54 pairs of ESCC tissues and adjacent normal tissues using the quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction method. Pearson's chi-squared test and receiver operating characteristic curves were established to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic value of piR-823 in ESCC. Spearman's correlation analysis was used to evaluate the association between piR-823 and DNMTs. We found that piR-823 was significantly upregulated in ESCC tissues compared with matched normal tissues (P = 0.0213), the level of piR-823 was significantly associated with lymph node metastasis (P = 0.042). The ROC curve analysis of piR-823 expression level yielded an area under the ROC curve value of 0.713 (P = 0.0001). DNMT3B was upregulated in ESCC tissues compared with matched normal tissues (P = 0.0286). There was an obvious positive correlation between piR-823 and DNMT3B expression (r = 0.6420, P < 0.0001). In conclusion, for the first time, we provided evidence about piRNA expression in EC. piRNA-823 and DNMT3B were both upregulated in ESCC and positively correlated with each other, suggesting the tumor oncogenic role of piR-823 in ESCC to epigenetically induce aberrant DNA methylation through DNMT3B. In addition, piRNA-823 showed high specificity in detecting ESCC and higher piRNA-823 level indicated higher risk of lymph node metastasis, suggesting its diagnostic and prognostic biomarker potential.

Ambient water nanofilms confined on solid surfaces usually show properties not seen in bulk and play unique roles in many important processes. Here we report diffusion and self-assembly of peptides in ambient water nanofilms on mica, based on "drying microcontact printing" and ex situ atomic force microscopy imaging. We found that diffusion and self-assembly of several peptides in the water nanofilms on mica resulted in one-dimensional "epitaxial" nanofilaments. The peptide self-assembly process is sensitive to the amount of water on the surface, and different peptides with varied molecular structures show different humidity-dependent behaviors. In addition, some peptides that cannot form nanofilaments on substrates in bulk water can be successfully self-assembled into nanofilaments in the water nanofilm.

The present paper investigated phosphorus forms in the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) using 31P-NMR spectroscopy, and analyzed the influential parameters for this method. The results showed that in the three investigated EPS samples five P forms were identified, including orthophosphate, orthophosphate monoesters, DNA, pyrophosphate and polyphosphate. And in the EPS extracted from A/A/O sludge and A/A/O-MBR sludge polyphosphate was the main phosphorus form. This indicated that P is contained in the EPS not only owing to the adsorption of orthophosphate, but also because EPS acting like the bacteria cells contributes to enhanced biological phosphorus removal. Furthermore the transformation of P forms in the EPS during the EPS extraction was found but limited within 1 h. It was found that with the NaOH solution added the polyphosphate in the EPS would partly convert to pyrophosphate but not go further to orthophosphate, while with pure water added P forms in the EPS were very stable. This means that after neutralization, the transformation of phosphorus forms could be avoided. Since the measurement of 31P-NMR spectroscopy was very sensitive to pH, which could affect the chemical shift of the peaks and cause peaks overlapping, the pH of EPS sample must be raised to 13.0 before the measurement.

We analyzed 52 pollen samples of surface soils from the southern slope of western Tian-shan, China, to understand the relationship between the surface pollen and modern vegetation, and the significance of the Artemisia/Chenopodiaceae (A/C). The results showed that there were five vegetation zones from the mountain top to the foot, i.e., alpine desert zone, alpine meadow zone, meadow and steppe zone, mountain desert zone, and typical desert zone. The typical taxa were Artemisia, Chenopodiaceae, Poaceae and Ephedra. The surface pollen assemblages greatly differed across different vegetation zones in this area. Surface pollen in the southern slope of the western Tianshan Mountains was affected by the northern slope, with the impacts increasing with the increases of altitude. The A/C increased with altitude, peaked in the alpine meadow zone, and then decreased, which could effectively indicate the vertical moisture change. Given the great fluctuation of A/C value, when using this ratio to reconstruct climate and environment, attention should be paid to the fact that high values caused by human activities and other factors may lead to misjudgments.

Purpose: The serine peptidase inhibitor, Kunitz type 1 antisense RNA1 (SPINT1-AS1), a long non-coding RNA , has been linked to cancer progression. In this study, we aimed to explore the SPINT1-AS1 expression in matched esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and normal tissues, and analyze the potential correlations of SPINT1-AS1 expression with clinicopathological characteristics, in order to evaluate its prognosis and therapeutic value. Methods: SPINT1-AS1 expression was detected in 99 cases of matched ESCC and normal tissues samples using the quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction method. Results: The expression level (â³Ct) of SPINT1-AS1 and SPINT1 mRNA was significantly downregulated in ESCC tissues compared with matched normal tissues (P=0.0005; P=0.0002, respectively), and there was an obvious positive correlation between SPINT1-AS1 and SPINT1 mRNA expression. Clinicopathological characteristics indicated that SPINT1-AS1 expression was correlated with age and tumor size, while SPINT1 mRNA expression was correlated with age and gender. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis of the expression level of SPINT1-AS1 and SPINT1 mRNA yielded an area under the ROC curve value of 0.638 and 0.625, respectively. The overall survival is shorter in patients with low SPINT1-AS1 expressed than those with high levels of SPINT1-AS1 (P=0.044), and SPINT1 mRNA expression level is associated with the OS (P=0.001). Univariate and multivariate analysis suggested that SPINT1-AS1 was an independent prognostic indicator in ESCC. Conclusions: We found that the expression of SPINT1-AS1 and SPINT1 mRNA is downregulated in ESCC tissues, which could contribute to tumor progression. SPINT1-AS1 and SPINT1 mRNA may be therapeutic targets and prognosis markers for ESCC.
RESUMO
BACKGROUND: Our previous studies demonstrate that the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is associated with the progression of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). HLA-DQA1, which belongs to the MHC Class II family, may be a potential biomarker in ESCC progression. However, the association between HLA-DQA1 and ESCC in high-incidence area of northern China has not been well characterized. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship of HLA-DQA1 expression with the progression and prognosis of ESCC. METHODS: We analyzed the expression profiles of HLA-DQA1 in esophageal cancer (EC) samples in the TCGA database and validated HLA-DQA1 expression by immunohistochemistry, western blotting, and quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction in matched EC and normal tissues, respectively. The correlation between HLA-DQA1 expression and clinicopathologic characteristics of ESCC was further analyzed. RESULT: Immunohistochemical analysis indicated that the expression level of HLA-DQA1 in ESCC tissues was significantly higher than the matched normal tissues (Pâ<â.001). HLA-DQA1 mRNA and protein expression were significantly higher in ESCC tissues compared to the matched normal tissues. Patients with family history negative or with tumor sizes >4âcm were associated with higher HLA-DQA1 expression levels. A prognostic significance of HLA-DQA1 was also found by the Log-rank method, in which high expression of HLA-DQA1 was correlated with a shorter overall survival time. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis yielded the area under the ROC curve value of 0.693. Univariate and multivariate analyses also suggest that high expression of HLA-DQA1 is a potential indicator for poor prognosis of ESCC. CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrate that HLA-DQA1 plays an important role in ESCC progression and may be a biomarker for ESCC diagnosis and prognosis, as well as a potential target for the treatment of patients with ESCC.

Preparation of distributed virus on a solid substrate is a prerequisite for investigation of the properties and individualism of virus, while many previous studies showed that virus has a tendency to aggregate on solid substrates. In this communication, we report a novel approach by which well-separated recombinant adeno-associated virus serotype 2 (rAAV2) could be prepared on bare mica surface. The key technique in this approach is the addition of less than 3% (v/v) glycerol into the virus solution and subsequently deposition onto mica surface for the sample preparation. The possible mechanisms are also briefly discussed.

Annually, about 70% of the streams in the Changbai Mountains are frosted during November to April, with manifest seasonal freeze-thaw characters. By using monoculture and mixing leaf litters of Tilia amurensis, Acer mono and Quecus mongolica, this research attempted to disentangle the relationship between leaf litter decomposition and colonization of macroinvertebrates in the stream during early frost period. A 35-day investigation was carried out in a headwater stream of the Changbai Mountains. Nylon bags with two hole sizes (5 mm and 0.3 mm) were used to examine decomposition of the litters. The results showed that the mass losses were significantly different among the three kinds of leaf litters in monoculture, whose decomposition rates descended as A. mono, T. amurensis, and Q. mongolica, however, there existed no significant difference among the litter mixing. Mass losses in both mesh bags all showed little difference, except T. amurensis and the mixed litters. Litter mixing effects occurred in the coarse mesh bags with A. mono and Q. mongolica, but no mixture effects for others. Community structures of the macroinvertebrates colonizing in the litter bags differed with each other, but shredders' density had no significant difference among the three litters, and the mixing effects on shredders were poor. Our results implied that microbes play the major decomposers of leaf litters, and macroinvertebrates contribute little to the decomposition in the early frost period. Despite shredder's density is lower, they determine the mixing effects of litters. Macroinvertebrates are selective to food and habitats, however, due to the short term colonizing, and the influence of leaf litters on shredders is still unsure. Our results might contribute to understanding the cold season ecological processes and related management issues of headwater stream ecosystem.
