RESUMO

Plants are simultaneously attacked by different pests that rely on sugars uptake from plants. An understanding of the role of plant sugar allocation in these multipartite interactions is limited. Here, we characterized the expression patterns of sucrose transporter genes and evaluated the impact of targeted transporter gene mutants and brown planthopper (BPH) phloem-feeding and oviposition on root sugar allocation and BPH-reduced rice susceptibility to Meloidogyne graminicola. We found that the sugar transporter genes OsSUT1 and OsSUT2 are induced at BPH oviposition sites. OsSUT2 mutants showed a higher resistance to gravid BPH than to nymph BPH, and this was correlated with callose deposition, as reflected in a different effect on M. graminicola infection. BPH phloem-feeding caused inhibition of callose deposition that was counteracted by BPH oviposition. Meanwhile, this pivotal role of sugar allocation in BPH-reduced rice susceptibility to M. graminicola was validated on rice cultivar RHT harbouring BPH resistance genes Bph3 and Bph17. In conclusion, we demonstrated that rice susceptibility to M. graminicola is regulated by BPH phloem-feeding and oviposition on rice through differences in plant sugar allocation.

RESUMO

The uncertainty and unknowability of emerging infectious diseases have caused many major public health and security incidents in recent years. As a new tick-borne disease, Dabieshan tick virus (DBTV) necessitate systematic epidemiological and spatial distribution analysis. In this study, tick samples from Liaoning Province were collected and used to evaluate distribution of DBTV in ticks. Outbreak points of DBTV and the records of the vector Haemaphysalis longicornis in China were collected and used to establish a prediction model using niche model combined with environmental factors. We found that H. longicornis and DBTV were widely distributed in Liaoning Province. The risk analysis results showed that the DBTV in the eastern provinces of China has a high risk, and the risk is greatly influenced by elevation, land cover, and meteorological factors. The risk geographical area predicted by the model is significantly larger than the detected positive areas, indicating that the etiological survey is seriously insufficient. This study provided molecular and important epidemiological evidence for etiological ecology of DBTV. The predicted high-risk areas indicated the insufficient monitoring and risk evaluation and the necessity of future monitoring and control work.

RESUMO

The predatory stink bug Arma custos has been selected as an effective biological control agent and has been successfully massly bred and released into fields for the control of a diverse insect pests. As a zoophytophagous generalist, A. custos relies on a complex neuropeptide signaling system to prey on distinct food and adapt to different environments. However, information about neuropeptide signaling genes in A. custos has not been reported to date. In the present study, a total of 57 neuropeptide precursor transcripts and 41 potential neuropeptide G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) transcripts were found mainly using our sequenced transcriptome data. Furthermore, a number of neuropeptides and their GPCR receptors that were enriched in guts and salivary glands of A. custos were identified, which might play critical roles in feeding and digestion. Our study provides basic information for an in-depth understanding of biological and ecological characteristics of the predatory bug and would aid in the development of better pest management strategies based on the effective utilization and protection of beneficial natural enemies.

RESUMO

We evaluate the burst-error performance of the regular low-density parity-check (LDPC) code and the irregular LDPC code that has been considered for ITU-T's 50G-PON standard via experimental measurements in FPGA. By using intra codeword interleaving and parity-check matrix rearrangement, we demonstrate that the BER performance can be improved under ∼44-ns-duration burst errors for 50-Gb/s upstream signals.

RESUMO

Due to their high degree of parallelism, fast processing speeds and low power consumption, analog optical functional elements offer interesting routes for realizing neuromorphic computer hardware. For instance, convolutional neural networks lend themselves to analog optical implementations by exploiting the Fourier-transform characteristics of suitable designed optical setups. However, the efficient implementation of optical nonlinearities for such neural networks still represents challenges. In this work, we report on the realization and characterization of a three-layer optical convolutional neural network where the linear part is based on a 4f-imaging system and the optical nonlinearity is realized via the absorption profile of a cesium atomic vapor cell. This system classifies the handwritten digital dataset MNIST with 83.96% accuracy, which agrees well with corresponding simulations. Our results thus demonstrate the viability of utilizing atomic nonlinearities in neural network architectures with low power consumption.

RESUMO

Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides have attracted great attention for potential applications in valleytronics. However, the valley polarization degree is usually not high because of the intervalley scattering. Here, a largely enhanced valley polarization up to 80% in monolayer WS2 under nonresonant excitation at 4.2 K is demonstrated using WS2 /LaMnO3 thin film heterostructure, which is much higher than that for monolayer WS2 on SiO2 /Si substrate with a valley polarization of 15%. Furthermore, the greatly enhanced valley polarization can be maintained to a high temperature of about 160 K with a valley polarization of 53%. The temperature dependence of valley polarization is strongly correlated with the thermomagnetic curve of LaMnO3 , indicating an exciton-magnon coupling between WS2 and LaMnO3 . A simple model is introduced to illustrate the underlying mechanisms. The coupling of WS2 and LaMnO3 is further confirmed with an observation of two interlayer excitons with opposite valley polarizations in the heterostructure, resulting from the spin-orbit coupling induced splitting of the conduction bands in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides. The results provide a pathway to control the valleytronic properties of transition metal dichalcogenides by means of ferromagnetic van der Waals engineering, paving a way to practical valleytronic applications.

RESUMO

1-nitropyrene (1-NP) is representative nitropolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon pollutant widely present in exhaust particles of internal combustion engine, which is known for its carcinogenicity and mutagenicity. Previous studies have demonstrated that 1-NP has reproductive toxicity, but the specific mechanism is unknown. In this study, Human decidual stromal cells (HDSCs) were treated by 1-NP, exosomes were extracted from the conditioned medium of HDSCs, which were then used to treat human chorionic trophoblast cells (HTR8/SVneo) for 24 h. The findings showed that human decidual stromal cell-derived exosomes (HDSC-EXOs) can promote the proliferation, migration, invasion and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT; Vimentin and N-cadherin) of HTR8/SVneo by about 64%, 17%, 23%, 81% and 13%. The process of regulating the biological behaviors of embryonic trophoblast cells by maternal decidual stromal cells during pregnancy was simulated. Further investigations showed that HDSC-EXOs treatment activated the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway in HTR8/SVneo. Co-treatment by dickkopf-1 (DKK-1) significantly suppressed the activation of Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway in HTR8/SVneo, and inhibited the proliferation, migration, invasion and EMT (N-cadherin and E-cadherin) of HTR8/SVneo by about 60%, 22%, 42%, 25%, 55% and 21%. These findings indicated that 1-NP exposure could induce the secretion of HDSC-EXOs from HDSCs, which in turn activate the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway and enhance the proliferation, migration, invasion and EMT of HTR8/SVneo.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: As is well recognized that inflammation plays a crucial role in the genesis and progression of various cancer. Here we investigate the prognostic value of a novel index: the combination of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and platelet distribution width (coNLR-PDW) in post-operation patients with resectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS: The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was utilized to determine the optimal cutoff values of continuous variables, including the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet distribution width (PDW). Kaplan-Meier method and the Log-rank test were used to compare survival differences across three groups stratified by the coNLR-PDW score. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analyses were adopted to identify independent factors of HCC patient's prognosis. RESULTS: 1.59 and 13.0 were perceived as the optimal cutoff value for NLR and PDW based on the ROC curve, respectively. Kaplan-Meier method revealed that a higher coNLR-PDW score predicts poorer overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) (P < 0.001). coNLR-PDW was demonstrated as an independent factor for both OS and DFS using Cox regression analysis in training and validation cohort. CONCLUSION: coNLR-PDW is recognized as a valuable biomarker for predicting the survival of patients with HCC.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested Lamin B2 (LMNB2) as an oncogene in lung cancer. However, the role of LMNB2 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains unclear. METHOD: The expression of LMNB2 was compared between HCC samples and non-tumor samples in multiple datasets. In addition, the prognostic value of LMNB2 in HCC was also investigated. Furthermore, the cBioPortal was utilized to analyze the genomic alternation of LMNB2 in HCC. Besides, co-expression genes and functional enrichment analysis were evaluated using LinkedOmics to determine the function of LMNB2. Finally, the correlation between LMNB2 and immune infiltration was assessed using Tumor Immune Estimation Resource (TIMER). RESULTS: Elevated LMNB2 expression level was identified in HCC patients in multiple datasets. Moreover, increased levels of LMNB2 were associated with poor overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). The functional enrichment analysis revealed that LMNB2 plays an essential role via the cell cycle pathway, spliceosome, hippo-signaling pathway, and metabolic pathways. Besides, copy number variation (CNV) and methylation were significantly associated with LMNB2 expression. Additionally, increased levels of LMNB2 were significantly associated with B cells, CD8+ T cells, CD4+ T cells, macrophages, neutrophils, and dendritic cells. CONCLUSION: LMNB2 is a potential HCC prognostic and diagnostic biomarker.

RESUMO

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has been recognized as a promising analytical technique owing to its merit of nondestructive and fast detection capabilities. However, SERS usually suffers signal interferences from different analytes or a complicated matrix. Separation is an effective approach to solve the signal interference in the application of SERS. It was proposed that two concentric coffee rings could serve as a simple separation platform; however, there are still many questions to be answered for in-depth understanding. In this study, critical parameters during the formation of two concentric coffee rings are characterized for a better understanding of this phenomenon, including surface tension, surface morphology, and surface energy. Two arsenicals, including arsenate (AsV) and cacodylic acid (DMAV), are chosen to study the arsenicals' separation/migration mechanism due to their significant difference in chemical properties. In the typical coffee ring, these two arsenicals have signal interference and only DMAV is detected via SERS; however, they are detected along the radius of the two concentric coffee rings. The distribution of arsenicals on the two concentric coffee rings is further verified by the chromatographic method. Under this simple platform, interactions between the arsenicals and the surface of the silver nanofilm are pivotal to their migration/separation. By surface modification of silver nanofilm with small molecules, the surface polarity and surface ζ potential are manipulated. The signal dynamics of these two arsenicals are studied on these modified silver nanofilms. It is clear that the electrostatic interaction plays a more important role than the polarity in the arsenicals' migration. This study reveals the mechanism of small molecule migration/separation in the two concentric coffee rings and provides insights for future study of employing this simple platform.

RESUMO

A new facet of nucleophilic fulvene epoxidations has been uncovered. 6-Arylfulvenes containing an ortho or para hydroxyl group react with basic hydrogen peroxide in an unusual manner; the epoxidation of the fulvene exocyclic double bond is followed by a phenoxide ion initiated epoxide ring opening to form an o-quinone methide (o-QM) intermediate. The resulting cyclopentadienolate undergoes an unusual oxy-anion accelerated [1,5]-sigmatropic o-QM shift. Computational studies reveal that the activation energy for the [1,5]-QM-shift in the cyclopentadienolate intermediate is quite low, signifying the acceleration caused by the oxy-anion group. Placement of a second hydroxyl group in the 6-aryl ring at C5 epoxidation via electron donation to the o-QM carbon; instead, an intramolecular oxa-6-π-electrocyclization of the o-QM intermediate onto the cyclopentadiene is observed.

RESUMO

In this paper, we analyzed medical records of 40 patients with coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19), in order to explore the clinical efficacy of Matrine and Sodium Chloride Injection in the treatment of COVID-19. The investigation was based on the results of a previous animal test, which was aimed to investigate and confirme the clinical efficacy of Matrine and Sodium Chloride Injection in the treatment of COVID-19. The animal test demonstrated that Matrine and Sodium Chloride Injection has a significant therapeutic effect on the human coronavirus pneumonia for the model mice. The lung inhibition index reached up to 86.86%. The evaluation was conducted on 40 confirmed cases of COVID-19 treated at Jingzhou Hospital of Infectious Disease(Chest Hospital) of Hubei Pro-vince from January 30~(th) to March 21~(th), 2020. In these cases, patients were treated with other integrated Chinese and Western medicines regimens in the recommended Matrine and Sodium Chloride Injection diagnosis and treatment regimen. The clinical manifestations, laboratory data, nucleic acid clearance time, and imaging data were compared and analyzed before and after treatment. After administration with Matrine and Sodium Chloride Injection, the clinical symptoms of 40 cases were alleviated markedly, and their blood analysis and biochemical indexes returned to normal. The lung CT showed more than 50% of lesion absorption rate, and the viral nucleic acid test showed the average clearance time of patients was 16.6 days, and the average length of hospital stay was 25.9 days. After administration with Matrine and Sodium Chloride Injection, the symptoms of cough and fatigue were alleviated significantly, and the appetite was significantly improved compared with before, especially for patients with gastrointestinal symptoms. Additionally, laboratory indicators, especially absolute value and ratio of lymphocytes and CRP were significantly alleviated. According to the chest CT for short-term review, the absorption of lung lesions was faster than before, especially for grid-like and fibrotic lesions. Compared with antiviral drugs, such as Abidol and Kriging, the nucleic acid clearance time was significantly shorter than the cases treated with Matrine and Sodium Chloride Injection. The clinical effective rate of 40 cases was 100.0%. We believed that Matrine and Sodium Chloride Injection have a good clinical effect in the treatment of COVID-19, and suggested increasing the clinical application and further conducting large-sample-size cli-nical verification.

RESUMO

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), as a nondestructive and fast detection technique, is a promising alternative approach for arsenic detection, particularly for in situ applications. SERS-based speciation analysis according to the fingerprint SERS signals of different arsenicals has the potential to provide a superior technique in species preservation over the conventional chromatographic separation methods, albeit with some difficulties due to the similarity in SERS patterns. In this study, we explored a novel SERS method for arsenic speciation by using the separation potential of the coffee ring effect on negatively charged silver nanofilms (AgNFs). Four arsenic species, including arsenite (AsIII), arsenate (AsV), monomethylarsonic acid (MMAV), and dimethylarsinic acid (DMAV), were measured for fingerprint SERS signals in solution and on the films. Significant enhancement of SERS signals on the dried coffee ring stains by the AgNFs were observed except for AsIII, and more importantly, arsenicals migrated varying distances during coffee ring development, promoting better speciation. Sodium dodecyl sulfate was then introduced into the droplet to reduce the droplet surface tension, facilitating the migration of solution into the peripheral region. Under the combined interactions of arsenicals with the AgNFs, solvent, and surfactant, enhanced separation between arsenicals was observed as a result of the formation of two concentric rings. Combining the SERS fingerprint signals and physical separation of arsenicals on the surface, arsenic speciation was achieved using the AgNFs substrate-based SERS technology, demonstrating the potential of the coffee ring effect for rapid separation and analysis of small molecules by SERS.

RESUMO

We experimentally demonstrate self-adaptive coded 5×100 Gb/s WDM polarization multiplexed 16 quadrature amplitude modulation transmission over a 100 km fiber link, which is enabled by a real-time control plane. The real-time optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) is measured using an optical performance monitoring device. The OSNR measurement is processed and fed back using control plane logic and messaging to the transmitter side for code adaptation, where the binary data are adaptively encoded with three types of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with code rates of 0.8, 0.75, and 0.7 of large girth. The total code-adaptation latency is measured to be 2273 ms. Compared with transmission without adaptation, average net capacity improvements of 102%, 36%, and 7.5% are obtained, respectively, by adaptive LDPC coding.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Although substantial evidence supports a 20-30% risk reduction of colon cancer, breast cancer, and endometrial cancer by physical activity (PA), the evidence for head and neck cancer (HNC) is limited. Three published studies on the association between PA and HNC have generated inconsistent results. The current study examined the association between recreational PA (RPA) and HNC risk with a more detailed assessment on the intensity, frequency, duration, and total years of RPA. METHODS: Data on RPA were collected from 623 HNC cases and 731 controls by in-person interview using a standardized questionnaire. The association between RPA and HNC risk was assessed using unconditional logistic regression, adjusted for sex, age, educational level, use of alcohol, betel quid, and cigarette, and consumption of vegetables and fruits. RESULTS: A significant inverse association between RPA and HNC risk was observed in a logistic regression model that adjusted for sex, age, and education (odds ratio (OR) = 0.65, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.51-0.82). However, after further adjustment for the use of alcohol, betel quid, and cigarette, and consumption of vegetables and fruits, RPA was no longer associated with HNC risk (OR =0.97, 95% CI: 0.73-1.28). No significant inverse association between RPA and HNC risk was observed in the analysis stratified by HNC sites or by the use of alcohol, betel quid, or cigarette. CONCLUSION: Results from our study did not support an inverse association between RPA and HNC risk. The major focus of HNC prevention should be on cessation of cigarette smoking and betel chewing, reduction of alcohol drinking, and promotion of healthy diet that contains plenty of fruits and vegetables.

RESUMO

Speciation of arsenic is usually carried out using chromatography-based methods coupled with spectroscopic determination; however, the inevitable procedures involving sample preparation and separation could potentially alter the integrity of the arsenic metabolites present in biological samples. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) could be a promising alternative for providing a reliable arsenic analysis under the influence of a cellular matrix. A method for arsenic speciation using SERS in cellular matrix was developed in this study and four arsenicals were selected, including arsenite (AsIII), arsenate (AsV), monomethylarsonic acid (MMAV) and dimethylarsinic acid (DMAV). Silver nanoparticles in the form of colliodal suspension with different surface charges, i.e., coated with citrate (AgNPs-Citrate) and spermine (AgNPs-Spermine) were employed as SERS substrates. Adsorption of arsenicals on nanoparticles in colloidal suspensions and the cellular matrix and the pH, size, and zeta potential of the colloidal suspensions were investigated for a better understanding of the SERS signal response of arsenicals in the colloidal suspensions or under the influence of cellular matrix. Arsenicals showed substantially different SERS responses in the two colloidal suspensions, mainly because of the distinct difference in the interaction between the arsenicals and the nanoparticles. Arsenic speciation in cell lysate could be successfully carried out in AgNPs-Spermine suspension, while AgNPs-Citrate could not yield significant SERS signals under the experimental conditions. This study proved that AgNPs-Spermine colloidal suspension could be a promising SERS substrate for studying arsenic metabolism in a biological matrix, reducing the bias caused by traditional techniques that involve sample extraction and pretreatment.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Allergy symptoms have been associated with a reduced head and neck cancer (HNC) risk, while elevated blood immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels have been associated with an increased HNC risk. According to the "prophylaxis hypothesis," allergic reaction is the body's way of expelling carcinogens. IgE level may be increased by exposure to environmental carcinogens, including alcohol and cigarette smoke. We hypothesized that individuals with elevated serum IgE without allergy symptoms (i.e., asymptomatic atopic) would have the highest HNC risk. METHODS: A case-control study of HNC (576 cases and 740 controls) was conducted to evaluate the association between allergy symptoms or serum total IgE and HNC risk and the effect modification of allergy symptoms on the association between serum total IgE and HNC risk. RESULTS: Elevated serum total IgE was associated with a significantly increased HNC risk [odds ratio (OR) 1.71, 95 % confidence interval (CI) 1.21-2.42]. Having allergy symptoms was associated with a significantly reduced HNC risk (OR 0.56, 95 % CI 0.43-0.73). Compared to subjects with normal serum total IgE and no allergy symptoms, asymptomatic atopic individuals had a significantly increased HNC risk (OR 2.12, 95 % CI 1.33-3.35). CONCLUSIONS: Our results provided further evidence to support the "prophylaxis hypothesis." Further investigations regarding the immune profiles of asymptomatic atopic individuals may provide additional clues for the biological mechanisms underlying the association between allergy symptoms, IgE, and HNC risk.

RESUMO

Alcohol consumption is an established risk factor for head and neck cancer (HNC). The major carcinogen from alcohol is acetaldehyde, which may be produced by humans or by oral microorganisms through the metabolism of ethanol. To account for the different sources of acetaldehyde production, the current study examined the interplay between alcohol consumption, oral hygiene (as a proxy measure for the growth of oral microorganisms), and alcohol-metabolizing genes (ADH1B and ALDH2) in the risk of HNC. We found that both the fast (*2/*2) and the slow (*1/*1+ *1/*2) ADH1B genotypes increased the risk of HNC due to alcohol consumption, and this association differed according to the slow/non-functional ALDH2 genotypes (*1/*2+ *2/*2) or poor oral hygiene. In persons with the fast ADH1B genotype, the HNC risk associated with alcohol drinking was increased for those with the slow/non-functional ALDH2 genotypes. For those with the slow ADH1B genotypes, oral hygiene appeared to play an important role; the highest magnitude of an increased HNC risk in alcohol drinkers occurred among those with the worst oral hygiene. This is the first study to show that the association between alcohol drinking and HNC risk may be modified by the interplay between genetic polymorphisms of ADH1B and ALDH2 and oral hygiene. Although it is important to promote abstinence from or reduction of alcohol drinking to decrease the occurrence of HNC, improving oral hygiene practices may provide additional benefit.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Combined radiotherapy and chemotherapy is considered the standard of care for locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (LA-NPC) in Epstein-Barr virus infection endemic area. This study compared the long-term outcomes between LA-NPC patients treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy (NACT) and those treated with concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). METHODS: From 2003 to 2007, a total of 128 histopathologically proven LA-NPC patients receiving either NACT or CCRT were consecutively enrolled at the National Cheng Kung University Hospital in Taiwan. NACT consisted of 3-week cycles of mitomycin, epirubicin, and cisplatin on day 1 and fluorouracil and leucovorin on day 8 (MEPFL) or weekly alternated cisplatin on day 1 and fluorouracil and leucovorin on day 8 (P-FL). CCRT comprised 3-week cycles of cisplatin (Cis 100) or 4-week cycles of cisplatin and fluorouracil (PF4). The first failure site, disease free survival (DFS), overall survival (OS), and other prognostic factors were analyzed. RESULTS: Thirty-eight patients (30%) received NACT. Median follow-up duration was 53 months. More patients with advanced nodal disease (N2-N3) (86.8% vs 67.8%, p =0.029) and advanced clinical stage (stage IVA-IVB) enrolled in the NACT group (55.2% vs 26.7%, p =0.002). For NACT, both MEPFL and P-FL had similar 5-year DFS and OS (52.9% vs 50%, p =0.860 and 73.5% vs 62.5%, p =0.342, respectively). For CCRT, both PF4 and Cis 100 had similar 5-year DFS and OS (62.8% vs 69.6%, p =0.49 and 72.9% vs 73.9%, p =0.72, respectively). Compared to CCRT, NACT had similar 5-year DFS and OS (51.5% vs 65.1%, p =0.28 and 71.7% vs 74.3%, p =0.91, respectively). Among patients who were recurrence-free in the first 2 years after treatment, those treated with NACT experienced poorer locoregional control compared to those treated with CCRT (Hazard ratio =2.57, 95% confidence interval: 1.02 to 6.47, p =0.046). CONCLUSIONS: For LA-NPC, both CCRT and NACT were similarly efficacious treatment strategies in terms of long-term disease control and survival probability. Close locoregional follow-up is recommended for patients receiving NACT, because these patients are more prone to develop locoregional failure than patients receiving CCRT.

RESUMO

Easily separable humic acid coated magnetite (HA-Fe3O4) nanoparticles are employed for effective adsorption and reduction of toxic Cr(VI) to nontoxic Cr(III). The adsorption and reduction of Cr(VI) is effective under acidic, neutral, and basic pH conditions. The chromium adsorption nicely fits the Langmuir isotherm model, and the removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous media by HA-Fe3O4 particles follows pseudo-second-order kinetics. Characterization of the Cr-loaded HA-Fe3O4 materials by X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy (XANES) indicates Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III) while the valence state of the iron core is unchanged. Fe K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS) and X-ray diffraction measurements also indicate no detectable transformation of the Fe3O4 core occurs during Cr(VI) adsorption and reduction. Thus, suggesting HA on the surface of HA-Fe3O4 is responsible for the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). The functional groups associated with HA act as ligands leading to the Cr(III) complex via a coupled reduction-complexation mechanism. Cr K-edge EXAFS demonstrates the Cr(III) in the Cr-loaded HA-Fe3O4 materials has six neighboring oxygen atoms likely in an octahedral geometry with average bond lengths of 1.98 Å. These results demonstrate that easily separable HA-Fe3O4 particles have promising potential for removal and detoxification of Cr(VI) in aqueous media.
