RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To assess the relationship between metastatic lymph node (LN) responder status and recurrence-free survival (RFS) in patients undergoing neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (NCRT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 304 patients with local advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma received NCRT followed by esophagectomy. For 112 patients with positive node, according to the proportion of residual viable tumor cells area within the whole tumor beds of all metastatic LNs, we classified LN-tumor regression grade (LN-TRG) into four categories: grade 1, 0%; 2, <10%; 3, 10%-50%; 4, >50%. Patients with grade 1-2 LN-TRG of were considered LN responders, and those with grades 3-4, as LN nonresponders. Univariate and multivariate analyses of RFS were estimated by a Cox regression model, Kaplan-Meier curve, and log-rank test. RESULTS: The median follow-up time of a total of 112 patients was 29.6 months. Fifty-two (46.4%) patients have experienced recurrence. In Cox univariate analysis, differentiation, AJCC stage LN responder status, nerve invasion, and lymphovascular invasion significantly correlated with RFS. Multivariate analysis for RFS revealed that LN responder status and AJCC stage (p < 0.05) were independent prognostic factor. The 3-year RFS rates for patients with LN-TRG of 1-4 grades were 72.7%, 76.5%, 37.4%, and 28.5%, respectively, and the median RFS times were not reach, 43.56, 28.09, and 22.77, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: LN responder status is an independent prognostic factor for RFS in esophageal cancer patients who received NCRT.

RESUMO

Rehabilitative care for burn patients in developing countries is often wrought with several issues. Post-discharge support is equally challenging as there is often limited rehabilitative care as the burn survivors and their families transition. To inform practice, this study sought to explore the perspectives of adult burn survivors and burn care staff regarding transitioning from the burn unit and the development of a transitional rehabilitation programme. We employed interpretive description for this study. Semi-structured face-to-face interviews were conducted with adult burn survivors and burn care staff across two tertiary healthcare facilities in Lanzhou, Gansu Province of China, and Ghana. The thematic analytical approach was employed to analyse the data. Forty-six participants comprising 26 adult burn survivors and 20 burn care staff participated in this study. Two themes and five subthemes emerged from the data. Transitioning from the burn unit to the home was described as complex with varied biopsychosocial needs emerging. However, available support was not comprehensive to resolve these needs. Existing pre-discharge support is limited across both settings. Burn survivors expressed interest in taking on an active role in the rehabilitation process and being able to self-manage their post-burn symptoms following discharge. Transitional rehabilitative support should include an active follow-up system, ensure patient- and family-centred support, and offer a bundle of comprehensive rehabilitative services using locally available items which do not financially burden burn survivors and their families. In conclusion, transitioning from the burn unit is filled with varied health needs. Transitional rehabilitative care is required to bridge the pre-discharge and post-discharge periods.

RESUMO

With severe soil and water erosion, the crucial ion-adsorption rare earth elements (REEs) have attracted much global attention. REEs play a vital role in tracing material sources and exploring sedimentary characteristics due to their unique and stable geochemistry properties. In the present work, three representational possible redeposition areas in western Fujian were selected as the study areas. The geochemical characteristics of REEs in the sediments of the study areas were evaluated to elucidate that REEs are the products of soil and water erosion and to assess their redeposition characteristics. In the research results, the properties of the parent rocks shown in the samples, together with the negative correlation between the content of REEs in the samples and altitude as well as the relief degree on the land surface (RDLS), fully indicate that the sediments in the study areas are the products of migration caused by soil erosion and redeposition in the downstream areas. At the same time, according to the widely applicable standard of rare earth resources exploitation, that is the boundary grade of ion-adsorption rare earth ore in southern China (∑REE = 500 mg·kg-1), we found that the content of REEs in the study areas was close to or exceeded this standard, and the maximum ∑REE of Guozhai Reservoir (869.11 mg·kg-1) was much larger than this standard. Therefore, the redeposited rare earth in Changting Country has high reuse potential under the current scarce resources.

RESUMO

The soil microbial diversity in the gangue accumulation area is severely stressed by a variety of heavy metals, while the influence of long-term recovery of herbaceous plants on the ecological structure of gangue-contaminated soil is to be explored. Therefore, we analysed the differences in physicochemical properties, elemental changes, microbial community structure, metabolites and expression of related pathways in soils in the 10- and 20-year herbaceous remediation areas of coal gangue. Our results showed that phosphatase, soil urease, and sucrase activities of gangue soils significantly increased in the shallow layer after herbaceous remediation. However, in zone T1 (10-year remediation zone), the contents of harmful elements, such as Thorium (Th; 1.08-fold), Arsenic (As; 0.78-fold), lead (Pb; 0.99-fold), and uranium (U; 0.77-fold), increased significantly, whereas the soil microbial abundance and diversity also showed a significant decreasing trend. Conversely, in zone T2 (20-year restoration zone), the soil pH significantly increased by 1.03- to 1.06-fold and soil acidity significantly improved. Moreover, the abundance and diversity of soil microorganisms increased significantly, the expression of carbohydrates in soil was significantly downregulated, and sucrose content was significantly negatively correlated with the abundance of microorganisms, such as Streptomyces. A significant decrease in heavy metals was observed in the soil, such as U (1.01- to 1.09-fold) and Pb (1.13- to 1.25-fold). Additionally, the thiamin synthesis pathway was inhibited in the soil of the T1 zone; the expression level of sulfur (S)-containing histidine derivatives (Ergothioneine) was significantly up-regulated by 0.56-fold in the shallow soil of the T2 zone; and the S content in the soil significantly reduced. Aromatic compounds were significantly up-regulated in the soil after 20 years of herbaceous plant remediation in coal gangue soil, and microorganisms (Sphingomonas) with significant positive correlations with benzene ring-containing metabolites, such as Sulfaphenazole, were identified.

RESUMO

Chitosanase plays an important role in chitooligosaccharides (COS) production. We found that the chitosanase (BaCsn46A) of Bacillus amyloliquefacien was a good candidate for chitosan hydrolysis of COS. In order to further improve the enzyme properties of BaCsn46A, the S196 located near the active center was found to be a critical site impacts on enzyme properties by sequence alignment analysis. Herein, saturation mutation was carried out to study role of 196 site on BaCsn46A catalytic function. Compared with WT, the specific enzyme activity of S196A increased by 118.79%, and the thermostability of S196A was much higher than WT. In addition, we found that the enzyme activity of S196P was 2.41% of that of WT, indicating that the type of amino acid in 196 site could significant affect the catalytic activity and thermostability of BaCsn46A. After molecular docking analysis we found that the increase in hydrogen bonds and decrease in unfavorable bonds interacting with the substrate were the main reason for the change of enzyme properties which is valuable for future studies on Bacillus species chitosanase.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON) is a serious complication of thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) that can cause permanent vision loss from orbital apex syndrome. Urgent management of high-dose corticosteroid pulse therapy is recommended, and salvage orbital apex decompression surgery may require in refractory patients ineffective with corticosteroid pulse therapy. PURPOSE: To evaluate the short-term efficacy and safety of combined endoscopic endonasal and orbital approach decompression in the annulus of the Zinn (AZ) area in refractory dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON). METHODS: In this retrospective study, patients who underwent combined endoscopic endonasal and orbital approach decompression around the AZ area for the treatment of refractory DON from May 2021 to March 2022 were enrolled. A total of 15 orbital apex were decompressed across 9 patients. The demographic, imaging, and surgical data, as well as preoperative and postoperative best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), proptosis degree and Modified-Chinese-TAO-QOL scores, were collected and assessed. The t-test was used to identify differences between preoperative and postoperative parameters: visual acuity, proptosis and QOL scores. RESULTS: The mean best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) improved from 0.79 ± 0.77 LogMAR preoperatively to 0.21 ± 0.27 LogMAR (P < 0.001) postoperatively. Additionally, proptosis decreased from 22.25 ± 2.01 mm to 18.42 ± 1.85 mm (P < 0.01), with an average decrease of 3.7 mm. The preoperative scores of the visual, psychological, and comprehensive components of QoL were 14.60 ± 9.08, 37.49 ± 6.26 and 26.75 ± 3.70, respectively, which significantly improved postoperatively to 54.18 ± 7.23, 68.78 ± 12.53 and 61.88 ± 9.37, respectively. The postoperative follow-up time ranged from 2 to 11 months, and the median follow-up time was 7 months. There was 1 case of transient postoperative sinusitis and 1 new case of transient diplopia, which was relieved after 3 months. CONCLUSION: Combined endoscopic endonasal and orbital approach adequate decompression for AZ area significantly improves visual acuity and QOL in patients with DON.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Osteoporotic vertebral fractures are often clinically silent and unrecognized. The present study aimed to determine whether routine chest radiographs could be a potential screening tool for identifying missed vertebral fractures in men aged over 50 years or postmenopausal women, especially those with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). In this study, we aimed to determine the prevalence of undetected vertebral fractures in elderly Chinese patients with and without T2DM. METHODS: Clinical data and chest radiographs of 567 individuals with T2DM (T2DM group) and 583 without diabetes (nondiabetic group) at a tertiary hospital in central south China were extracted from the records. Vertebral fractures were specifically looked for on chest radiographs and classified using the Genant semi-quantitative scale. Prevalence was compared between the two groups. RESULTS: Mean age and sex composition were comparable between the two groups. Mean weight and body mass index were significantly lower in the T2DM group. In both groups, fractures mostly involved the T11-12 and L1 vertebrae. Moderate/severe fractures were identified in 33.3% individuals in the T2DM group (31.4% men and 36.0% women) versus 23.2% individuals (20.9% men and 25.5% women) in the nondiabetic group. CONCLUSIONS: Routine chest radiographs could be a useful screening tool for identifying asymptomatic vertebral fractures. Trial registration The study was designed as an observational retrospective study, therefore a trial registration was not necessary.

RESUMO

We report a case of a young male with amphetamine toxicity initially obscured by concomitant use of gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), and the sympathomimetic symptoms emerged after GHB's effects receded. A 24-year-old unconscious man presented to emergency department showed the following vital signs upon admission: blood pressure 136/58 mmHg; heart rate 79 bpm; SpO2 87% under ambient air; body temperature 36.1 °C; Glasgow Coma Scale score 3. The pupils were not dilated. Arterial blood gas test revealed respiratory acidosis (pH = 7.229, pCO2 = 64.4 mmHg, pO2 = 42.3 mmHg, HCO3 = 26.3 mmol/L). Intubation was performed and the patient was transferred to intensive care unit. The patient regained consciousness and became agitated in association with sinus tachycardia (heartrate 143 bpm; blood pressure 173/61 mmHg). A few hours later, he experienced abrupt desaturation (SpO2 65%) and profuse, pinkish, frothy sputum. Chest radiography revealed a bat-wing perihilar shadowing, and computed tomography showed bilateral ground-glass opacity and an alveolar pattern from acute pulmonary edema. A high dose of benzodiazepine with a midazolam pump at 50 mg/h was administered to relieve symptoms. The patient's friends confessed to concomitant use of amphetamine and GHB. The urine toxicology result was positive for amphetamine (≧500 ng/mL). The patient improved later and was extubated at 4 days after the mitigation of pneumonia and discharged uneventfully 8 days later. In our patient, amphetamine intoxication was initially masked by concomitant use of GHB but appeared as GHB's effect attenuated. We wish to remind clinicians of variable clinical presentations of polydrug abuse.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The goal of this study to summarize the clinical features, treatment and prognosis of children trichobezoar, and to guide the clinical diagnosis and treatment. METHODS: The clinical manifestations, auxiliary examination results, diagnosis and treatment process and family relationship of 11 cases of children with trichobezoar in our hospital were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS: 11 cases were female, 4 cases were divorced single parent family, and 2 case was left behind child. Six patients were admitted to hospital with sudden exacerbation of chronic abdominal pain, and four of them had recurrent vomiting. Five patients were admitted to hospital with acute abdominal pain, and 3 of them had vomiting symptoms; The weight of 1 case was lower than -2 SD, 4 cases were between -2 SD ~ -1 SD. 6 cases had palpable left upper abdominal mass with mild tenderness, 1 case only had left upper abdominal tenderness, 4 cases had no positive abdominal signs; The results of color Doppler ultrasonography in 8 children indicated the strong echo mass in the stomach, and 3 of them showed that the hyperechoic group extended to duodenum through pylorus. 7 cases had a tail end extending into the small intestine after removing the gastrolith during the operation. Four cases were found with jejunal perforation, 2 cases were treated with intestinal resection and anastomosis, and 2 cases were treated with intestinal repair. All the children were improved and discharged after operation. CONCLUSION: For single parent families or left behind children with a history of chronic abdominal pain, vomiting and trichophilia, gastric hair stones should be highly suspected. For large hair stones in the stomach, they should be removed surgically. During the operation, the small intestine should be explored routinely to prevent the missed diagnosis of small intestinal perforation. Psychological guidance should be given to the children and their parents to prevent recurrence.

RESUMO

The soil ecological health risks and toxic effects of coal gangue accumulation were examined after 10 years of elm/poplar phytoremediation. The changes in soil enzyme activities, ionome metabolism, and microbial community structure were analyzed at shallow (5-15 cm), intermediate (25-35 cm), and deep (45-55 cm) soil depths. Soil acid phosphatase activity in the restoration area increased significantly by 4.36-7.18 fold (p < 0.05). Soil concentrations of the metal ions Cu, Pb, Ni, Co, Bi, U, and Th were significantly reduced, as were concentrations of the non-metallic element S. The repair effect was shallow > middle > deep. The soil community structure, determined by 16S diversity results, was changed significantly in the restoration area, and the abundance of microorganisms increased at shallow soil depths. Altererythrobacter and Sphingomonas species were at the center of the microbial weight network in the restoration area. Redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that S and Na are important driving forces for the microbial community distributions at shallow soil depths. The KEGG function prediction indicated enhancement of the microbial function of the middle depth soil layers in the restoration area. Overall, phytoremediation enhanced the biotransformation of soil phosphorus in the coal gangue restoration area, reduced the soil content of several harmful metal elements, significantly changed the structure and function of the microbial community, and improved the overall soil ecological environment.

RESUMO

Planktonic microorganisms play a key role in the biogeochemical processes of the aquatic system, and they may be affected by many factors. High-throughput sequencing technology was used in this study to investigate and study the bacterioplankton community of water bodies in the upper reaches of the Heihe River Basin in Qinghai Plateau. Results showed that Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes and Actinobacteria are the predominant phyla in this river section, while the main genera are Thiomonas, Acidibacillus, Acidocella, Rhodanobacter, Acidithiobacter and Gallionella, which are autochthonous in the acid-mine drainage. Additionally, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, permanganate index and pH are significantly correlated with the bacterioplankton abundance and are the main limiting factors for the spatial distribution of the bacterioplankton. PICRUSt inferred that the mainstream microbial assemblages had a higher abundance of KOs belong to metabolism of terpenoids and polyketides, while the tributary had higher abundance of KOs belong to the immune system. The relationship between bacterioplankton community composition and environmental factors in the Heihe River basin was discussed for the first time in this study, which provides a theoretical basis for the healthy, orderly development of the water environment in the Heihe River Basin.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of hypomagnesemia in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) has been noted previously; however, the association of hypomagnesemia and severity of primary hyperparathyroidism remains unknown. The present study aimed to evaluate the association of hypomagnesemia with biochemical and clinical manifestations in patients with PHPT. METHODS: This was a retrospective study conducted at a tertiary hospital. We obtained data from 307 patients with PHPT from January 2010 through August 2020. Data on demographics, history, laboratory findings, bone densitometry findings, and clinical presentation and complications were collected and were compared in normal magnesium group vs hypomagnesemia group. RESULTS: Among the 307 patients with PHPT included in our study, 77 patients (33/102 [32.4%] males and 44/205 [21.5%] females) had hypomagnesemia. Mean hemoglobin levels in the hypomagnesemia group were significantly lower than those in the normal magnesium group in both males and females. In contrast, patients with hypomagnesemia had a higher mean serum calcium and parathyroid hormone than individuals with normal magnesium. The typical symptoms of PHPT, such as nephrolithiasis, bone pain/fractures, polyuria, or polydipsia, were more common in the hypomagnesemia group. In addition, patients with hypomagnesemia had a higher prevalence of osteoporosis, anemia, and hypercalcemic crisis. Even after adjusting for potential confounders, including age, sex, body mass index, estimated glomerular filtration rate, and parathyroid hormone levels, these associations remained essentially unchanged. CONCLUSION: Biochemical and clinical evidence indicates that patients with PHPT with hypomagnesemia have more severe hyperparathyroidism than those without hypomagnesemia. In addition, PHPT patients with hypomagnesemia had a higher prevalence of osteoporosis, anemia, and hypercalcemic crisis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Early detection of acute kidney injury (AKI) is crucial for the prognosis of patients after liver transplantation (LT). This passage aims to analyze the perioperative clinical markers of AKI after LT and establish predictive models based on clinical variables for early detection of AKI after LT. METHODS: We prospectively collected 109 patients with LT, and compared the differences of perioperative clinical markers between the AKI group and non-AKI group. The scoring system and decision tree model were established through the risk factors. Another 163 patients who underwent LT in the same center from 2017 to 2018 were retrospectively collected to verify the models. RESULTS: In multiple comparisons of risk factors of post-LT AKI, pre-operative factors were excluded automatically, intraoperative and post-operative factors including operating time, intraoperative hypotension time, post-operative infection, the peak of post-operative AST, and post-operative shock were the independent risk factors for post-LT AKI. The scoring system established with the risk factors has good predictive power (AUC = 0.755) in the validation cohort. The decision tree also shows that post-operative shock was the most important marker, followed by post-operative infection. CONCLUSION: Five intraoperative and post-operative factors are independently associated with post-LT AKI rather than pre-operative factors, which indicates that operation technique and post-operative management may more important for the prevention of post-LT AKI. The scoring system and decision tree model could complement each other, and provide quantitative and intuitive prediction tools for clinical practice of early detection of post-LT AKI.

RESUMO

Congenital transmesenteric hernias are uncommon and are a rare cause of bowel obstruction, which is even rarer in pregnant woman. Because of the lack of specific symptoms or reliable sensitive markers, it is difficult to diagnose internal hernia at early stage, therefore resulting in the delay of surgical intervention and a high mortality rate, especially in pregnant woman. We report a case in which a woman presenting at 16 weeks` gestation was admitted with symptoms of nausea, vomiting and left upper abdominal pain similar to her first-trimester morning sickness. Nephrolithiasis of the left kidney detected by ultrasound may lead to early incorrect diagnosis. Due to the patient`s concern about known adverse effects of ionizing radiation on the fetus, computed tomography was postponed until abdominal pain worsened, coffee color gastric contents vomited and anus stopped exhaust and defecation 12 hours later. Low dose CT plain scan showed features of small bowel obstruction by an internal hernia. Emergency exploratory laparotomy revealed a mesenteric defect of the left colon with a 30 cm long jejunal herniating distal to 10 cm of the ligament of Treitz. The involved small bowel was strangulated and gangrened, necrotic segmental resection and end to end anastomosis were performed subsequently, and the mesenteric defect was then successfully repaired with sutures.

RESUMO

To investigate the safety of Injection of Xuesaitong(lyophilized) in clinical "real world" application, including the types, incidence, as well as the severity and treatment measures of adverse reactions/adverse events. This will serve as a basis for hospitals and enterprises to develop risk control measures. A prospective, multi-center, and large-sample hospital centralized monitoring method was used to conduct post-marketing safety monitoring of Injection of Xuesaitong(lyophilized) in medical institutions nationwide. Paper case report forms were adopted to collect general information, medication and adverse reaction information of patients using Injection of Xuesaitong(lyophilized). Data analysis was performed by using SAS 9.1 software. The study included 79 hospitals with 30 097 patients. 199 cases of adverse events were found in patients administered with Injection of Xuesaitong(lyophilized), a total of 206 times. Among 199 cases, 40 of them showed adverse reactions, accounting for an overall incidence of 0.13% and 95%CI[0.09%,0.17%], which was an occasional grade. There were 38 cases of mild adverse reactions, accounting for 95.0%, 2 cases of moderate adverse reactions, accounting for 5.0%. Adverse reaction symptoms were relieved in six patients, accounting for 15.0% of the total number of adverse reactions, adverse reaction symptoms disappeared in 34 cases, with an overall percentage of 85.0%. The results of the study showed the adverse reactions in patients using Injection of Xuesaitong(lyophilized) were rare and mild, with a good prognosis. Therefore, clinical administration of Injection of Xuesaitong(lyophilized) is relatively safe.

RESUMO

Peritoneal adhesion is one of the common complications after abdominal operation, which could seriously affect the quality of life in patients. Although the development of modern surgical technology and the improvement of doctors' operation level have reduced the incidence of peritoneal adhesion to a certain extent, due to the lack of special treatment drugs, the therapeutic effect still cannot meet the expectations and requirements of clinicians and patients. Traditional Chinese medicines(TCM) have unique advantages and remarkable curative effect in the treatment of peritoneal adhesion, and they can play an important role in regulating multiple pathological links. However, the relevant researches and product development of TCM against peritoneal adhesion have not attracted enough attention from industry scholars. As for the related work that has been carried out, most of the studies on the efficacy and mechanism are not thorough and systematic enough, seriously restricting the industrial development in this field. In this paper, the efficacy and mechanism were systematically described and summarized based on the review of papers in the recent years, so as to provide a reference for the thorough study of TCM in the prevention and treatment of peritoneal adhesions, and promote the deep development and industrialization process of related products.

RESUMO

To investigate the extensive application of Injection of Xuesaitong(lyophilized) in clinical real world study, and provide basis for clinical guidance on rational drug use and improvement of drug instructions. A prospective, multi-center, large-sample hospital centralized monitoring method was adopted to collect the general information and medication information of all patients who received Injection of Xuesaitong(lyophilized) during the study period in the respective monitoring units. Data analysis was performed using SAS 9.1 software. This study included 79 hospitals, with 30 097 patients being recruited. The patients who met the indications for stroke and hemiplegia accounted for 31.18%, those who experienced indications of chest pain and heartache accounted for 23.15%, and patients with central retinal vein occlusion indication accounted for 0.53%. The minimum single dose of Injection of Xuesaitong(lyophilized) was 20 mg, the maximum single dose was 1 000 mg, and the average single dose was(383.31±78.10) mg. 69.96% of the patients used 0.9% sodium chloride as the menstruum, 28.78% of the patients used 5% glucose as the menstruum, and 0.19% of the patients used 10% glucose as the menstruum. The minimum time for Injection of Xuesaitong(lyophilized) to dissolve is 0 min, 120 min maximally, and(14.26±13.73) min on an average basis. Patients using Injection of Xuesaitong(lyophilized) by intravenous drip accounted for 99.93%, with a slowest drip rate of 10 drops per min, fastest drip rate of 80 drops per min, and an average of(43.91±10.77) drops per min. Injection of Xuesaitong(lyophilized) was used for a minimum of 1 day and a maximum of 80 days, with an average of(8.22±5.12) days. Combined use with other injections accounted for 80.67%, 47.14% of them flushed the tube and 3.31% of them replaced infusion sets. The study found 40 cases of adverse reactions in patients with Injection of Xuesaitong(lyophilized), with an overall incidence of 0.13%(0.09% to 0.17%) for adverse reactions. In the real world application, the usage of Injection of Xuesaitong(lyophilized) basically meets the requirement of drug instructions in terms of indications, dosages, and methods of administration. However, it still needs to be improved in standardizing the selection of the menstruum, drip rate, course of treatment, and the combined usage of medicine.

RESUMO

Transporting biological samples such as cells or tissues is complicated by the need to maintain integrity and minimise modification and degradation, but this is economically costly as the samples must be shipped in a frozen state. This multi-laboratory study investigated sample variability introduced by non-cooled transport of dried peptide samples for proteomic analysis using mass spectrometry. Human cancer cell tryptic lysates were proteolysed and dried in Australia and shipped by air to Europe and China. Samples were measured using label free mass spectrometry on similar LC-MS systems at all three sites. Preparation and analysis of the specimens in this manner resulted in only minor differences in protein identification and showed high quantitative reproducibility amongst the participating laboratories. We examined any impact on peptide chemical modification and report no discrepancies compared to the starting, non-shipped sample. We conclude that transport of non-cooled, dried peptides has negligible effect on sample integrity for downstream LC-MS analysis and therefore represents a cost-effective option to facilitate international proteomic collaborations. Data is available via ProteomeXchange with identifier PXD008160.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Many asthmatic women of childbearing age experience cyclical aggravation of asthmatic symptoms during the perimenstrual period, or perimenstrual asthma (PMA). PMA is considered to be a difficult-to-treat asthma phenotype; conventional asthma therapies are not always effective against PMA. CASE STUDY: We report a case of a 27-year-old female with PMA who had received standard asthma treatment since 2013. RESULT: The patient showed a dramatic response to therapeutic intervention of oral prednisone, taken for 7 days prior to menstruation each month, in a dose-dependent manner. CONCLUSION: Premenstrual treatment with oral prednisone may be a successful new direction for the treatment of PMA, a troublesome type of asthma.
