RESUMO

In moiré crystals formed by stacking van der Waals materials, surprisingly diverse correlated electronic phases and optical properties can be realized by a subtle change in the twist angle. Here, we discover that phonon spectra are also renormalized in MoS2 twisted bilayers, adding an insight to moiré physics. Over a range of small twist angles, the phonon spectra evolve rapidly owing to ultra-strong coupling between different phonon modes and atomic reconstructions of the moiré pattern. We develop a low-energy continuum model for phonons that overcomes the outstanding challenge of calculating the properties of large moiré supercells and successfully captures the essential experimental observations. Remarkably, simple optical spectroscopy experiments can provide information on strain and lattice distortions in moiré crystals with nanometre-size supercells. The model promotes a comprehensive and unified understanding of the structural, optical and electronic properties of moiré superlattices.

RESUMO

While valleys (energy extrema) are present in all band structures of solids, their preeminent role in determining exciton resonances and dynamics in atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) is unique. Using two-dimensional coherent electronic spectroscopy, we find that exciton decoherence occurs on a much faster timescale in MoSe_{2} bilayers than that in the monolayers. We further identify two population relaxation channels in the bilayer, a coherent and an incoherent one. Our microscopic model reveals that phonon-emission processes facilitate scattering events from the K valley to other lower-energy Γ and Λ valleys in the bilayer. Our combined experimental and theoretical studies unequivocally establish different microscopic mechanisms that determine exciton quantum dynamics in TMDC monolayers and bilayers. Understanding exciton quantum dynamics provides critical guidance to the manipulation of spin-valley degrees of freedom in TMDC bilayers.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Abnormal brain findings have previously been described in fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) by single-photon-emission computed tomography. Our goal was to investigate change in regional cerebral glucose metabolism in people with FMS by positron emission tomography (PET) using 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG). METHODS: Twelve patients with FMS and no comorbid psychiatric diagnosis and 7 healthy pain-free controls were studied with FDG-PET in a blinded manner. Those with a psychiatric diagnosis were excluded. Brain scans were obtained using a PET scanner. Semiquantitative analysis of regional 18F-FDG uptake was performed in both cortical and subcortical brain structures. RESULTS: In the resting state, there were no significant differences in 18F-FDG uptake between patients and controls for all brain structures measured. CONCLUSION: FDG-PET scan findings in FMS were not significantly different from healthy controls. Normal results in our study may be explained by discordance between regional cerebral blood flow and regional cerebral glucose metabolism.
