RESUMO
Two novel quaternary oxyarsenides, Eu8Zn2As6O and Eu14Zn5As12O, were synthesized through metal flux reactions, and their crystal structures were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. Eu8Zn2As6O crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbca, featuring polyanionic ribbons composed of corner-shared triangular [ZnAs3] units, running along the [100] direction. The structure of Eu14Zn5As12O crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2/m and its anionic substructure can be described as an infinite "ribbonlike" chain comprised of [ZnAs3] trigonal-planar units, although the structural complexity here is greater and also amplified by disorder on multiple crystallographic positions. In both structures, the O2- anion occupies an octahedral void with six neighboring Eu2+ cations. Formal electron counting, electronic structure calculations, and transport properties reveal the charge-balanced semiconducting nature of these heteroanionic Zintl phases. High-temperature thermoelectric transport properties measurements on Eu14Zn5As12O reveal relatively high resistivity (ρ500K = 8 Ω·cm) and Seebeck coefficient values (S500K = 220 µV K-1), along with a low concentration and mobility of holes as the dominant charge-carriers (n500K = 8.0 × 1017 cm-3, µ500K = 6.4 cm2/V s). Magnetic studies indicate the presence of divalent Eu2+ species in Eu14Zn5As12O and complex magnetic ordering, with two transitions observed at T1 = 21.6 K and T2 = 9 K.
RESUMO
The control of domain walls is central to nearly all magnetic technologies, particularly for information storage and spintronics. Creative attempts to increase storage density need to overcome volatility due to thermal fluctuations of nanoscopic domains and heating limitations. Topological defects, such as solitons, skyrmions, and merons, may be much less susceptible to fluctuations, owing to topological constraints, while also being controllable with low current densities. Here, we present the first evidence for soliton/soliton and soliton/antisoliton domain walls in the hexagonal chiral magnet Mn1/3NbS2 that respond asymmetrically to magnetic fields and exhibit pair-annihilation. This is important because it suggests the possibility of controlling the occurrence of soliton pairs and the use of small fields or small currents to control nanoscopic magnetic domains. Specifically, our data suggest that either soliton/soliton or soliton/antisoliton pairs can be stabilized by tuning the balance between intrinsic exchange interactions and long-range magnetostatics in restricted geometries.
RESUMO
The BaAl4 prototype structure and its derivatives have been identified to host several topological quantum materials and noncentrosymmetric superconductors. Single crystals up to â¼3 mm × 3 mm × 5 mm of Ln2Co3Ge5 (Ln = Pr, Nd, and Sm) are obtained via flux growth utilizing Sn as metallic flux. The crystal structure is isostructural to the Lu2Co3Si5 structure type in the crystallographic space group C2/c. The temperature-dependent magnetization indicates magnetic ordering at 30 K for all three compounds. Pr2Co3Ge5 and Nd2Co3Ge5 exhibit complex magnetic behavior with spin reorientations before ordering antiferromagnetically around 6 K, whereas Sm2Co3Ge5 shows a clear antiferromagnetic behavior at 26 K. The structures and properties of Ln2Co3Ge5 (Ln = Pr, Nd, and Sm) are compared to those of the ThCr2Si2 and BaNiSn3 structure types. Herein, we present the optimized crystal growth, structure, and physical properties of Ln2Co3Ge5 (Ln = Pr, Nd, and Sm).
RESUMO
The Drude model modified by Debye relaxation time was introduced to determine the plasma frequency (ωp) in the surface initiated polymerization (SIP) synthesized ß-silicon carbide (ß-SiC)/polyaniline (PANI) metacomposites. The calculated plasma frequency for these metacomposites with different loadings of ß-SiC nanoparticles was ranging from 6.11 × 10(4) to 1.53 × 10(5) rad s(-1). The relationship between the negative permittivity and plasma frequency indicates the existence of switching frequency, at which the permittivity was changed from negative to positive. More interestingly, the synthesized non-magnetic metacomposites, observed to follow the 3-dimensional (3-D) Mott variable range hopping (VRH) electrical conduction mechanism, demonstrated high positive magnetoresistance (MR) values of up to 57.48% and high MR sensitivity at low magnetic field regimes.
RESUMO
The vibrational properties of CO, O2, and H2 molecularly or dissociatively adsorbed on a CoCrFeNi(110) surface have been probed using high-resolution energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) and modeled using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Large (â¼20 mm3) single-crystal, quaternary face-centered cubic CoCrFeNi was synthesized via a modified Czochralski technique. We show strong evidence that CO adsorbs primarily on bridge and on-top sites in compositionally varied local environments, which reflect the random, multielemental surface composition inherent in a high entropy alloy. A variation of adsorption sites is also found with oxygen, which exhibits two broad groups of modes. Comparison to previous photoemission and theoretical studies suggests that the higher energy modes consist primarily of local CrO x species, while the lower energy modes are due to oxygen atoms adsorbed on other metal sites. Unlike CO and O2, HREELS upon H2 adsorption shows only two much narrower modes and is consistent with atomic adsorption on 3-fold hollow sites. The hypothesized adsorption sites for all three species are directly corroborated by our DFT calculations.
RESUMO
We present the structure of Ln(30)Ru(4+x)Sn(31-y) (Ln = Gd, Dy) and the anisotropic resistivity, magnetization, thermopower, and thermal conductivity of single crystal Ln(30)Ru(4+x)Sn(31-y) (Ln = Gd, Tb). Gd(30)Ru(4.92)Sn(30.54) crystallizes in a new structure-type with space group Pnnm and dimensions of a = 11.784(1) Å, b = 24.717(1) Å, and c = 11.651(2) Å, and V = 3394(1) Å(3). Magnetic anisotropy and highly anisotropic electrical transport behavior were observed in the single crystals of Gd(30)Ru(4.92)Sn(30.54) and Tb(30)Ru(6)Sn(29.5). Additionally, the lattice thermal conductivity of Tb(30)Ru(6)Sn(29.5) is quite low, and a comparison is made to other Sn-containing compounds.
RESUMO
Ln2Ru3Al15 (Ln = Ce, Gd) have been synthesized, and the competition between the growth of Ce2Ru3Al15 and CeRu2Al10 has been studied. The structure of Ce2Ru3Al15 was modified from the previously reported Ce2Ru3Al15 structure, and the structure of Gd2Ru3Al15 was determined for the first time. The magnetic and transport properties of Ln2Ru3Al15 were measured and compared to the properties of LnRu2Al10. Gd2Ru3Al15 orders antiferromagnetically at 21.0 K with a spin reorientation at 4.1 K and has a positive paramagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature of 11.5(17) K, suggesting strong ferromagnetic interactions within the structure. Ce2Ru3Al15 displays two low-temperature magnetic transitions at 3.7 and 3.1 K, the first of which is believed to be an antiferromagnetic ordering, with a θN of -7(3) K and a reduced moment of 2.33(4) µB/mol-Ce. Furthermore, the low-temperature magnetic and transport properties display the effects of Kondo screening of the magnetic moments. While structurally related, the properties of Ce2Ru3Al15 do not display the same anomalous features observed in CeRu2Al10.
RESUMO
Crystal growth, structure determination, and magnetic properties of LnCr2Al(20-x)Fe(x) (Ln = La, Gd, Yb) adopting the CeCr2Al20 structure type with space group Fd3m, a â¼ 14.5 Å, are reported. Single crystal X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy are employed to fully characterize the crystal structure of LnCr2Al(20-x)Fe(x) (Ln = La, Gd, Yb). LnCr2Al(20-x)Fe(x) (Ln = La, Gd, Yb) are the first pseudoternaries adopting the CeCr2Al20 structure type with a transition metal occupying the main group site. The Yb analogues are Pauli paramagnets with the Yb ion adopting an electronic configuration close to Yb(2+), while the Gd analogues show paramagnetic behavior with no magnetic order down to 3 K.
RESUMO
Phosphoric acid doped conductive polyaniline (PANI) polymer nanocomposites (PNCs) reinforced with silicon nanopowders have been successfully synthesized using a facile surface initiated polymerization (SIP) method. The chemical structures of the nanocomposites are characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The enhanced thermal stability of the silicon-PANI PNCs compared with pure PANI is obtained using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The obtained optical band gap of the PNCs using Ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS) decreases with increasing silicon loading. The dielectric properties of the PNCs are strongly related to the silicon loading level. Temperature dependent resistivity analysis reveals a quasi 3-D variable range hopping (VRH) electrical conduction mechanism for the synthesized PNCs. Room temperature giant magnetoresistance (GMR) is observed in the synthesized non-magnetic nanocomposites and analyzed using the wave-function shrinkage model.
RESUMO
The discovery of novel materials with low thermal conductivity is paramount to improving the efficiency of thermoelectric devices. As lattice thermal conductivity is inversely linked to unit cell complexity, we set out to synthesize a highly complex crystalline material with glasslike thermal conductivity. Here we present the structure, transport properties, heat capacity, and magnetization of single-crystal Gd(117)Co(56)Sn(112), a complex material with a primitive unit cell volume of ~6858 Å(3) and ~285 atoms per primitive unit cell (1140 atoms per face-centered cubic unit cell). The room temperature lattice thermal conductivity of this material is κ(L) = 0.28 W/(m·K) and represents one of the lowest ever reported for a nonglassy or nonionically conducting bulk solid. Furthermore, this material exhibits low resistivity at room temperature, and thus represents a true physical system that approaches the ideal phonon glass-electron crystal.
RESUMO
New distorted variants of the cubic BaHg11 structure type have been synthesized in Ga flux. Multiple phases of CePd3+xGa8-x, which include an orthorhombic Pmmn structure (x = 3.21(2)), a rhombohedral R3m structure (x = 3.13(4)), and a cubic Fm3m superstructure (x = 2.69(6)), form preferentially depending on reaction cooling rate and isolation temperature. Differential thermal analysis and in situ temperature-dependent powder X-ray diffraction patterns show a reversible phase transition at approximately 640 °C between the low temperature orthorhombic and rhombohedral structures and the high temperature cubic superstructure. Single crystal X-ray diffraction experiments indicate that the general structure of BaHg11, including the intersecting planes of a kagomé-type arrangement of Ce atoms, is only slightly distorted in the low temperature phases. A combination of Kondo, crystal electric field, and magnetic frustration effects may be present, resulting in low temperature anomalies in magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and heat capacity measurements. In addition to CePd3+xGa8-x, the rare earth analogues REPd3+xGa8-x, RE = La, Nd, Sm, Tm, and Yb, were successfully synthesized and also crystallize in one of the lower symmetry space groups.
RESUMO
Polyaniline (PANI) nanocomposites incorporating different loadings of graphene and various other carbon nanostructures including carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon nanofibers (CNFs) have been synthesized using a surface-initiated polymerization (SIP) method. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results indicate that the graphene has been exfoliated into a few layers (typically one, two, and three layers) during polymerization and has been uniformly dispersed in the PANI matrix. The graphene layer dispersion degree is quantified by a free-path spacing measurement (FPSM) method based on the TEM microstructures. The SIP method also demonstrates its feasibility for coating PANI on one-dimensional (1D) CNFs and CNTs without introducing additional surface functional groups. The effects of graphene size, loading level, and surface functionality on the electrical conductivity and dielectric permittivity of their corresponding nanocomposites have been systematically studied. The temperature-dependent conductivity behavior revealed a quasi-3D variable range hopping (VRH) electron transport mechanism for all the nanocomposites. Giant magnetoresistance (GMR) at room temperature is observed in pure PANI, which can be enhanced by the incorporation of a high loading of graphene (5%) due to the π-π stacking-induced efficient electron transport at the PANI/graphene interface. More interestingly, negative permittivity is found in each composite which can be easily tuned by adjusting the filler loading, morphology, and surface functionality.
RESUMO
Ln(Cu,Al,Ga)(13-x) (Ln = La-Pr, and Eu; x ~ 0.2) were synthesized by a combined Al/Ga flux. Single crystal X-ray and neutron diffraction experiments revealed that these compounds crystallize in the NaZn(13) structure-type (space group Fm3[overline]c) with lattice parameters of a ~ 12 Å, V ~ 1600 Å, and Z ~ 8. Our final neutron models led us to conclude that Cu is occupationally disordered on the 8b Wyckoff site while Cu, Al, and Ga are substitutionally disordered on the 96i Wyckoff site of this well-known structure-type. The magnetic susceptibility data show that Ce(Cu,Al,Ga)(13-x) and Pr(Cu,Al,Ga)(13-x) exhibit paramagnetic behavior down to the lowest temperatures measured while Eu(Cu,Al,Ga)(13-x) displays ferromagnetic behavior below 6 K. Eu(Cu,Al)(13-x) was prepared via arc-melting and orders ferromagnetically below 8 K. The magnetocaloric properties of Eu(Cu,Al,Ga)(13-x) and Eu(Cu,Al)(13-x) were measured and compared. Additionally, an enhanced value of the Sommerfeld coefficient (γ = 356 mJ/mol-K(2)) was determined for Pr(Cu,Al,Ga)(13-x). Herein, we present the synthesis, structural refinement details, and physical properties of Ln(Cu,Al,Ga)(13-x) (Ln = La-Pr, and Eu) and Eu(Cu,Al)(13-x).
RESUMO
A facile thermodecomposition process to synthesize magnetic graphene nanocomposites (MGNCs) is reported. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and energy filtered elemental mapping revealed a core@double-shell structure of the nanoparticles with crystalline iron as the core, iron oxide as the inner shell and amorphous Si-S-O compound as the outer shell. The MGNCs demonstrate an extremely fast Cr(VI) removal from the wastewater with a high removal efficiency and with an almost complete removal of Cr(VI) within 5 min. The adsorption kinetics follows the pseudo-second-order model and the novel MGNC adsorbent exhibits better Cr(VI) removal efficiency in solutions with low pH. The large saturation magnetization (96.3 emu/g) of the synthesized nanoparticles allows fast separation of the MGNCs from liquid suspension. By using a permanent magnet, the recycling process of both the MGNC adsorbents and the adsorbed Cr(VI) is more energetically and economically sustainable. The significantly reduced treatment time required to remove the Cr(VI) and the applicability in treating the solutions with low pH make MGNCs promising for the efficient removal of heavy metals from the wastewater.

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) have intriguing material properties, but their potential as catalysts has not been widely explored. Based on a concise theoretical model, we predict that the surface of a quaternary HEA of base metals, CoCrFeNi, should go from being nearly fully oxidized except for pure Ni sites when exposed to O2 to being partially oxidized in an acidic solution under cathodic bias, and that such a partially oxidized surface should be more active for the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic solutions than all the component metals. These predictions are confirmed by electrochemical and surface science experiments: the Ni in the HEA is found to be most resistant to oxidation, and when deployed in 0.5 M H2SO4, the HEA exhibits an overpotential of only 60 mV relative to Pt for the HER at a current density of 1 mA/cm2.
RESUMO
Ln(4)FeGa(12), where Ln is Y, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er, prepared by flux growth, crystallize with the cubic Y(4)PdGa(12) structure with the Im3m space group and with a = 8.5650(4), 8.5610(4), 8.5350(3), 8.5080(3), and 8.4760(3) A, respectively. The crystal structure consists of an iron-gallium octahedra and face-sharing rare-earth cuboctahedra of the Au(3)Cu type. Er(4)Fe(0.67)Ga(12) is iron-deficient, leading to a distortion of the octahedral and cuboctahedral environments due to the splitting of the Ga2 site into Ga2 and Ga3 sites. Further, interstitial octahedral sites that are unoccupied in Ln(4)FeGa(12) (Ln = Y, Tb, Dy, and Ho) are partially occupied by Fe2. Y(4)FeGa(12) exhibits weak itinerant ferromagnetism below 36 K. In contrast, Tb(4)FeGa(12), Dy(4)FeGa(12), Ho(4)FeGa(12), and Er(4)Fe(0.67)Ga(12) order antiferromagnetically with maxima in the molar magnetic susceptibilities at 26, 18.5, 9, and 6 K. All of the compounds exhibit metallic electric resistivity, and their iron-57 Mossbauer spectra, obtained between 4.2 and 295 K, exhibit a single-line absorption with a 4.2 K isomer shift of ca. 0.50 mm/s, a shift that is characteristic of iron in an iron-gallium intermetallic compound. A small but significant broadening in the spectral absorption line width is observed for Y(4)FeGa(12) below 40 K and results from the small hyperfine field arising from its spin-polarized itinerant electrons.
RESUMO
We use neutron scattering to investigate spin excitations in Sr(Co1-xNix)2As2, which has a c-axis incommensurate helical structure of the two-dimensional (2D) in-plane ferromagnetic (FM) ordered layers for 0.013⩽x⩽0.25. By comparing the wave vector and energy dependent spin excitations in helical ordered Sr(Co0.9Ni0.1)2As2 and paramagnetic SrCO2As2, we find that Ni doping, while increasing lattice disorder in Sr(Co1-xNix)2As2, enhances quasi-2D FM spin fluctuations. However, our band structure calculations within the combined density functional theory and dynamic mean field theory (DFT+DMFT) failed to generate a correct incommensurate wave vector for the observed helical order from nested Fermi surfaces. Since transport measurements reveal increased in-plane and c-axis electrical resistivity with increasing Ni doping and associated lattice disorder, we conclude that the helical magnetic order in Sr(Co1-xNix)2As2 may arise from a quantum order-by-disorder mechanism through the itinerant electron mediated Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interactions.
RESUMO
A high-quality polycrystalline sample of the correlated 4d post-perovskite CaRhO(3) (Rh(4+): 4d(5), S(el) = 1/2) was attained under a moderate pressure of 6 GPa. Since the post-perovskite is quenchable at ambient pressure/temperature, it can be a valuable analogue of the post-perovskite MgSiO(3) (stable higher than 120 GPa and unstable at ambient pressure), which is a significant key material in earth science. The sample was subjected for measurements of charge-transport and magnetic properties. The data clearly indicate it goes into an antiferromagnetically ordered state below approximately 90 K in an unusual way, in striking contrast to what was observed for the perovskite phase. The post-perovskite CaRhO(3) offers future opportunities for correlated electrons science as well as earth science.
RESUMO
Single crystals of Ce(Cu(1-x)Ni(x))(y)Sb(2) (x = 0, 0.25, 0.37, 0.46; yâ¼0.7) were synthesized using a flux growth method and crystallize in the tetragonal P4/nmm space group with lattice parameters of aâ¼4.4 Å and câ¼9.8 Å. The effects of Ni substitution on the magnetic and electrical transport properties are investigated. Three of the analogues (with x = 0, 0.37, and 0.46) show antiferromagnetic behavior while the x = 0.25 sample is paramagnetic down to 2 K. Field-dependent magnetization data as well as resistivities are presented. Positive magnetoresistance behaviors above 70% are observed for the analogues with x = 0, 0.37, and 0.46 at 3 K and up to 9 T. The La analogue La(Cu(0.2)Ni(0.8))(y)Sb(2), has been synthesized and large, positive magnetoresistance of â¼300% is observed at 3 K and 9 T.
RESUMO
Herein, we first report a tunable organic magnetoresistance (OMAR) effect in polyaniline (PANI) coated acid treated poly(p-phenylene-2,6-benzobisoxazole) (t-PBO) short fibers. This unique OMAR is interpreted using the paramagnetic nature of PBO molecules combined with the localization length a0 calculated from the wave-function shrinkage model and forward interference model.
