RESUMO

Antireflection (AR) coatings are essential to the performance of optical systems; without them, surface reflections increase significantly at steep angles and become detrimental to the functionality. AR coatings apply to a wide range of applications from solar cells and laser optics to optical windows. Many times, operational conditions include high temperatures and steep angles of incidence (AOIs). The implementation of AR coatings is extremely challenging in these conditions. Nanoporous coatings made from high-temperature-tolerant materials offer a solution to this problem. The careful selection of materials is needed to prevent delamination when exposed to high temperatures, and an optimal optical design is needed to lower surface reflections at both the normal incidence and steep AOIs. This paper presents nanoporous silicon dioxide and hafnium dioxide coatings deposited on a sapphire substrate using oblique angle deposition by electron beam evaporation, a highly accurate deposition technique for thin films. Developed coatings were tested in a controlled temperature environment and demonstrated thermal stability at temperatures up to 800°C. Additional testing at room temperature demonstrated the reduction of power reflections near optimal for AOIs up to 70° for a design wavelength of 1550 nm. These findings are promising to help extend the operation of technology at extreme temperatures and steep angles.

AIM: To assess the inter-assessor reliability of the Motor Optimality Score-Revised (MOS-R) when used in infants at elevated likelihood for adverse neurological outcome. METHODS: MOS-R were assessed in three groups of infants by two assessors/cohort. Infants were recruited from longitudinal projects in Sweden (infants born extremely preterm), India (infants born in low-resource communities) and the USA (infants prenatally exposed to SARS-CoV-2). Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and kappa (κw) were applied. ICC of MOS-R subcategories and total scores were presented for cohorts together and separately and for age-spans: 9-12, 13-16 and 17-25-weeks post-term age. RESULTS: 252 infants were included (born extremely preterm n = 97, born in low-resource communities n = 97, prenatally SARS-CoV-2 exposed n = 58). Reliability of the total MOS-R was almost perfect (ICC: 0.98-0.99) for all cohorts, together and separately. Similar result was found for age-spans (ICC: 0.98-0.99). Substantial to perfect reliability was shown for the MOS-R subcategories (κw: 0.67-1.00), with postural patterns showing the lowest value 0.67. CONCLUSION: The MOS-R can be used in high-risk populations with substantial to perfect reliability, both in regards of total/subcategory scores as well as in different age groups. However, the subcategory postural patterns as well as the clinical applicability of the MOS-R needs further study.

Theories of visual attention suggest a cascading development of subfunctions such as alertness, spatial orientation, attention to object features, and endogenous control. Here, we aimed to track infants' visual developmental steps from a primarily exogenously to more endogenously controlled processing style during their first months of life. In this repeated measures study, 51 infants participated in seven fortnightly assessments at postterm ages of 4-16 weeks. Infants were presented with the same set of static and dynamic paired comparison stimuli in each assessment. Visual behavior was evaluated by a newly introduced scoring scheme. Our results confirmed the suggested visual developmental hierarchy and clearly demonstrated the suitability of our scoring scheme for documenting developmental changes in visual attention during early infancy. Besides the general ontogenetic course of development, we also discuss intra- and interindividual differences which may affect single assessments, and highlight the importance of repeated measurements for reliable evaluation of developmental changes.

BACKGROUND: Standardized recommendations for inpatient and outpatient physiotherapy for preterm infants are lacking in Germany. The aim of this study was to investigate the prescription practice in German neonatal intensive care units. Are standardized assessments used to determine indications? How important is the General Movements Assessment in postnatal diagnostics? METHODS: We conducted an online survey in German neonatal intensive care units asking 21 questions on indication and prescription practices for inpatient and outpatient physiotherapy in preterm infants' care as well as on General Movements Assessment and its clinical application via Lime Survey. RESULTS: 81% of the participating sites "always" or "often" recommend indication-based inpatient physiotherapy for preterm infants and 53% "always"/"often" recommend outpatient therapy. Indications are mainly based on these symptoms (N=344) or diagnoses (N=273) (multiple answers): hypotonia (94%), abnormal and imbalanced muscle tone (92%), neurological abnormalities (97%) and brain damage (94%). Standardized testing is used by 41% of the participants. The General Movements Assessment is known to 87% of the neonatal intensive care units, 11% use it several times a week, 17% several times a month for indication of physiotherapy. CONCLUSION: Physiotherapy is frequently prescribed for preterm infants. The majority of indications are based on symptoms or clinical pictures rather than on standardized tests. The General Movements Assessment is a widely known method but not systematically applied at the moment.

Prelexical phonetic capacities have widely been described to be a precursor for later speech and language development. However, studies so far varied greatly in the measurements used for the detection of canonical babbling onset or the description of infants' phonetic capacities at one or more set time points. The comparability of results is, therefore, questionable. Thus, the aims of this study were to investigate the associations between (1) different measurements of CBO, (2) different aspects of phonetic capacity at the age of 9 months and (3) age of CBO and phonetic capacities at 9 months. A further aim (4) was to explore whether one of the measures would be suitable to predict the age of word onset (WO) in 20 healthy German-acquiring individuals. The data were derived from monthly recorded spontaneous speech samples between 0 and 18 months. It was found that the different applied prelexical measures equally well serve as valid estimators for the detection of CBO or of infants' phonetic capacities. Further, age of CBO and phonetic capacities at 9 months were significantly associated even though the age of CBO did not reliably predict phonetic capacities. Prelexical measures and WO were not related. Reasons for no indication of a significant association are discussed.

Temperature-dependent diffuse reflectance measurements on Cr-doped α-alumina monoliths have been performed using supercontinuum-laser illumination and CO2-laser heating. These measurements have been interpreted using an extended Kubelka-Munk (K-M) model describing diffuse-light propagation in highly scattering and fluorescent media to assess the temperature dependence of fluorescence quantum efficiency. Analysis of experimental results has provided a qualitative understanding of the temperature-dependent conditions for model applicability and also suggests methods for using supercontinuum-laser diffuse reflectance spectroscopy for detection of unknown fluorescent dopants.

Palladium nanoparticles were synthesized directly in solid fluoropolymer films by thermal decomposition of a palladium acetylacetonate precursor molecularly infused in the fluoropolymer matrix. This chemical infusion synthesis technique was studied using transmission electron microscopy along with selective area electron diffraction to gain insight into the nucleation and growth of palladium nanoparticles. Formation of palladium nanoparticles can be correlated with defects in the polymer matrix as well as their associated free volume such that a relationship between average particle size and mean free volume fraction can be constructed. At low processing temperatures, the average particle radius increases monotonically with the processing time but more complicated variations occur for longer times. The growth of nanoparticles was interpreted using a modified diffusion-limited growth model. While nearly monodisperse nanoparticles dispersed throughout the polymer volume were obtained at low processing temperatures, surface percolation of nanoparticles was observed at relatively high temperatures owing to high precursor decomposition and diffusion rates.

Supercontinuum-laser illumination in conjunction with CO2-laser heating has been implemented to measure the near to short-wave infrared (970-1660 nm) diffuse reflectance of plasma-sprayed Nd2Zr2O7 as a function of temperature. Owing to the broadband nature of this experimental technique, the diffuse reflectance of plasma-sprayed Nd2Zr2O7 has been measured at many wavelengths and has been shown to decrease with increasing temperature. A physics-based model for diffuse reflectance predicated on the crystal/electronic band structure of highly scattering semiconductor materials has been constructed to interpret the results of these measurements. Baseline materials characterization has also been performed to assist in the development of crystal/electronic band structure-optical property relationships that could be useful for the design of next-generation environmental barrier coatings. This characterization has included ambient and non-ambient x-ray diffraction as well as room-temperature, integrating-sphere diffuse reflectance spectroscopy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Substantial research exists focusing on the various aspects and domains of early human development. However, there is a clear blind spot in early postnatal development when dealing with neurodevelopmental disorders, especially those that manifest themselves clinically only in late infancy or even in childhood. RECENT FINDINGS: This early developmental period may represent an important timeframe to study these disorders but has historically received far less research attention. We believe that only a comprehensive interdisciplinary approach will enable us to detect and delineate specific parameters for specific neurodevelopmental disorders at a very early age to improve early detection/diagnosis, enable prospective studies and eventually facilitate randomised trials of early intervention. In this article, we propose a dynamic framework for characterising neurofunctional biomarkers associated with specific disorders in the development of infants and children. We have named this automated detection 'Fingerprint Model', suggesting one possible approach to accurately and early identify neurodevelopmental disorders.

This study presents results for the high-temperature (up to 1550 K) optical properties of polycrystalline Cr-doped α-alumina materials. Diffuse reflectance spectra in the wavelength range of 510-840 nm are presented as a function of temperature to illustrate changes to the optical behavior of these materials including a previously unreported thermally activated splitting of the U-band absorption (A24→T24) in octahedrally coordinated Cr3+. Measurements were made using a unique laser-based approach for high-temperature solid-state spectroscopy, involving front-side supercontinuum laser illumination and back-side CO2 laser heating. This approach required development of samples that could withstand related thermal stresses, and measurements were made on plasma-sprayed, Cr-doped α-alumina monoliths. Measured spectra are interpreted, in part, using published optical spectra for ruby; agreement between results here with those obtained using more traditional methods serves to validate the measurement methods used for this work.

The extent to which early motor patterns represent antecedents to later communicative functions, and the emergence of gesture and/or sign as potential communicative acts in neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), are research questions that have received recent attention. It is important to keep in mind that different NDDs have different neurological underpinnings, with correspondingly different implications for their conceptualization, detection, and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Retrospective parental reports have often been used to identify the early characteristics of children later diagnosed with a developmental disorder. METHOD: We applied this methodology to document 13 parents' initial concerns about the development of their 17 children later diagnosed with fragile X syndrome (FXS). Parents were additionally asked about when they noticed the emergence of behavioural signs related to FXS. RESULTS: More than half of the parents reported initial concerns prior to the child's first birthday and in most cases it was deviant motor behaviours that caused the first concerns. Behavioural signs related to the FXS phenotype were also reported to be perceptible in the first year of the child's life. CONCLUSIONS: Due to limitations of retrospective parental questionnaires, we suggest that other methodologies, such as home video analysis, are needed to complement our understanding of the pathways of developmental disorders with late clinical onsets.

RESUMO

Hypersonic vehicles must withstand extreme conditions during flights that exceed five times the speed of sound. These systems have the potential to facilitate rapid access to space, bolster defense capabilities, and create a new paradigm for transcontinental earth-to-earth travel. However, extreme aerothermal environments create significant challenges for vehicle materials and structures. This work addresses the critical need to develop resilient refractory alloys, composites, and ceramics. We will highlight key design principles for critical vehicle areas such as primary structures, thermal protection, and propulsion systems; the role of theory and computation; and strategies for advancing laboratory-scale materials to manufacturable flight-ready components.

Background: The general movement optimality score (GMOS) quantifies the details of general movements (GMs). We recently conducted psychometric analyses of the GMOS and developed a revised scoresheet. Consequently, the GMOS-Revised (GMOS-R) instrument necessitated validation using new percentile ranks. This study aimed to provide these percentile ranks for the GMOS-R and to investigate whether sex, preterm birth, or the infant's country of birth and residence affected the GMOS-R distribution. Methods: We applied the GMOS-R to an international sample of 1983 infants (32% female, 44% male, and 24% not disclosed), assessed in the extremely and very preterm period (10%), moderate (12%) and late (22%) preterm periods, at term (25%), and post-term age (31%). Data were grouped according to the World Bank's classification into lower- and upper-middle-income countries (LMICs and UMICs; 26%) or high-income countries (HICs; 74%), respectively. Results: We found that sex and preterm or term birth did not affect either GM classification or the GMOS-R, but the country of residence did. A lower median GMOS-R for infants with normal or poor-repertoire GMs from LMICs and UMICs compared with HICs suggests the use of specific percentile ranks for LMICs and UMICs vs. HICs. Conclusion: For clinical and scientific use, we provide a freely available GMOS-R scoring sheet, with percentile ranks reflecting socioeconomic stratification.

It is unclear if SARS CoV-2 infection during pregnancy is associated with adverse neurodevelopmental repercussions to infants. We assessed pediatric neurodevelopmental outcomes in children born to mothers with laboratory-confirmed SARS CoV-2 infection during pregnancy. Neurodevelopmental outcomes of in-utero exposed children were compared to that of pre-pandemic control children in Los Angeles (LA), CA, USA and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, 3rd edition (Bayley-III), the gold standard tool for evaluating neurodevelopment until 36 months of age and Ages and Stages Questionnaires (ASQ-3), a frequently used screening instrument for evaluating neurodevelopment in this same age group were the assessment tools used. Developmental delay (DD) was defined as having a score < - 2 SD below the norm (< 70) in at least one of three Bayley-III domains, (cognitive, motor or language) or a score below the cut-off (dark zone) in at least one of five ASQ-3 domains (communication, gross motor, fine motor, problem solving, personal-social). Exposed children were born between April 2020 and December 2022 while control children were born between January 2016 to December 2019. Neurodevelopmental testing was performed in 300 children total: 172 COVID-19 exposed children between 5-30 months of age and 128 control children between 6-38 months of age. Bayley-III results demonstrated that 12 of 128 exposed children (9.4%) had DD versus 2 of 128 controls (1.6%), p = 0.0007. Eight of 44 additional exposed children had DD on ASQ-3 testing. Fully, 20 of 172 exposed children (11.6%) and 2 of 128 control children (1.6%), p = 0.0006 had DD. In Rio, 12% of exposed children versus 2.6% of controls, p = 0.02 had DD. In LA, 5.7% of exposed children versus 0 controls, p = 0.12 had DD. Severe/critical maternal COVID-19 predicted below average neurodevelopment in the exposed cohort (OR 2.6, 95% CI 1.1-6.4). Children exposed to antenatal COVID-19 have a tenfold higher frequency of DD as compared to controls and should be offered neurodevelopmental follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Aiming at objective early detection of neuromotor disorders such as cerebral palsy, we propose an innovative non-intrusive approach using a pressure sensing device to classify infant general movements. Here we differentiate typical general movement patterns of the "fidgety period" (fidgety movements) vs. the "pre-fidgety period" (writhing movements). METHODS: Participants (N = 45) were sampled from a typically-developing infant cohort. Multi-modal sensor data, including pressure data from a pressure sensing mat with 1024 sensors, were prospectively recorded for each infant in seven succeeding laboratory sessions in biweekly intervals from 4 to 16 weeks of post-term age. 1776 pressure data snippets, each 5 s long, from the two targeted age periods were taken for movement classification. Each snippet was pre-annotated based on corresponding synchronised video data by human assessors as either fidgety present or absent. Multiple neural network architectures were tested to distinguish the fidgety present vs. fidgety absent classes, including support vector machines, feed-forward networks, convolutional neural networks, and long short-term memory networks. RESULTS: Here we show that the convolution neural network achieved the highest average classification accuracy (81.4%). By comparing the pros and cons of other methods aiming at automated general movement assessment to the pressure sensing approach, we infer that the proposed approach has a high potential for clinical applications. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that the pressure sensing approach has great potential for efficient large-scale motion data acquisition and sharing. This will in return enable improvement of the approach that may prove scalable for daily clinical application for evaluating infant neuromotor functions.


The movement of a baby is used by health care professionals to determine whether they are developing as expected. The aim of this study was to investigate whether a pad containing sensors that measured pressure occurring as the babies moved could enable identification of different movements of the babies. The results we obtained were similar to those obtained from use of a computer to process videos of the moving babies or other methods using movement sensors. This method could be more readily used to check the movement development of babies than other methods that are currently used.

Microwave absorbing materials for high-temperature harsh environments are highly desirable for aerodynamically heated parts and engine combustion induced hot spots of aircrafts. This study reports ceramic composites with excellent and stable high-temperature microwave absorption in air, which are made of polymer-derived SiOC reinforced with core-shell nanophase structure of ZrB2/ZrO2. The fabricated ceramic composites have a crystallized t-ZrO2 interface between ZrB2 and SiOC domains. The ceramic composites exhibit stable dielectric properties, which are relatively insensitive to temperature change from room temperature to 900 °C. The return loss exceeds - 10 dB, especially between 28 and 40 GHz, at the elevated temperatures. The stable high-temperature electromagnetic (EM) absorption properties are attributed to the stable dielectric and electrical properties induced by the core-shell nanophase structure of ZrB2/ZrO2. Crystallized t-ZrO2 serve as nanoscale dielectric interfaces between ZrB2 and SiOC, which are favorable for EM wave introduction for enhancing polarization loss and absorption. Existence of t-ZrO2 interface also changes the temperature-dependent DC conductivity of ZrB2/SiOC ceramic composites when compared to that of ZrB2 and SiOC alone. Experimental results from thermomechanical, jet flow, thermal shock, and water vapor tests demonstrate that the developed ceramic composites have high stability in harsh environments, and can be used as high-temperature wide-band microwave absorbing structural materials.

BACKGROUND: Infants with Rett syndrome (RTT) may have subtle anomalies in their prelinguistic vocalisations but the detection of these is difficult, since their conspicuous vocalisations are often interspersed with inconspicuous ones. AIMS AND METHODS: Extending a previous study with predominantly non-parents, the present study sampled parents of children with RTT and aimed to examine their gestalt perception of prelinguistic vocalisations. METHODS AND PROCEDURE: Parents (n = 76) of female children with RTT listened to vocalisation recordings from RTT and typically developing (TD) infants, including an inconspicuous vocalisation from a RTT girl. For each recording, parents indicated if the vocalisation was produced by a RTT or a TD child. RESULTS: Overall correct to incorrect identification rate was 2:1, which was comparable to that of the previous study. Intriguingly, parents of RTT children seemed to be sensitive to features characterising the vocalisations of RTT infants, which has especially influenced their perception of the inconspicuous vocalisation from a RTT girl. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: These results invite further research on the potential characterising differences between vocalisations from TD infants and infants with divergent neurodevelopment.

Directional liquid transport along one-dimensional structures finds vast applications in fog harvest, liquid separation, sensing, chemical synthesis, and numerous other scenarios. Dynamically, the liquid transport speed is boosted by the driving force and retarded by the hysteresis from the liquid/substrate interface. A capillary force-relied lubricant film or a covalently attached polymer brush on the surface could increase liquid mobility temporarily by reducing the interfacial hysteresis. However, the easy depletion of the lubricant film and the stringent restriction of the substrate severely hamper droplet's directional transport in a long run. Herein, we report a feasible and durable hysteresis reduction design with the polymer-brush stabilized lubricating surface (PBSLS). The PBSLS is achieved through incorporating liquid-like polydimethylsiloxane brushes (b-PDMS) and the liquid PDMS oligomer (o-PDMS). The covalent attached b-PDMS "locks" the lubricant oil o-PDMS to the cone surface via strong intermolecular van der Waals force in between. The PBSLS on the cone surface can be sustained under constant shearing force from liquid transport for at least 6 h.
