RESUMO

Coal dust is the main occupational hazard factor during coal mining operations. This study aimed to investigate the role of macrophage polarization and its molecular regulatory network in lung inflammation and fibrosis in Sprague-Dawley rats caused by coal dust exposure. Based on the key exposure parameters (exposure route, dose and duration) of the real working environment of coal miners, the dynamic inhalation exposure method was employed, and a control group and three coal dust groups (4, 10 and 25 mg/m3) were set up. Lung function was measured after 30, 60 and 90 days of coal dust exposure. Meanwhile, the serum, lung tissue and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid were collected after anesthesia for downstream experiments (histopathological analysis, RT-qPCR, ELISA, etc.). The results showed that coal dust exposure caused stunted growth, increased lung organ coefficient and decreased lung function in rats. The expression level of the M1 macrophage marker iNOS was significantly upregulated in the early stage of exposure and was accompanied by higher expression of the inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6 and the chemokines IL-8, CCL2 and CCL5, with the most significant trend of CCL5 mRNA in lung tissues. Expression of the M2 macrophage marker Arg1 was significantly upregulated in the mid to late stages of coal dust exposure and was accompanied by higher expression of the anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-10 and TGF-ß. In conclusion, macrophage polarization and its molecular regulatory network (especially CCL5) play an important role in lung inflammation and fibrosis in SD rats exposed to coal dust by dynamic inhalation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Due to insufficient near-field resolution and artifacts, it is challenging to evaluate the left ventricular apical perfusion with phased-array probes. By combining high-frequency linear probe and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS), imaging of apical myocardial perfusion could be improved. The study aims to evaluate the preliminary application of CEUS by high-frequency linear probes to assess the apical perfusion. METHODS: The study enrolled retrospectively 91 patients to test the feasibility of the novel method. In protocol 1, patients were stratified into a group with left anterior descending artery (LAD) stenosis (N = 40) and a group without LAD stenosis or coronary artery disease (N = 41) based on the degree of coronary artery narrowing, quantified by >50% stenosis in coronary angiography. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis was performed to test the diagnostic value of perfusion parameters. In protocol 2, the reproducibility of high-frequency linear probe in apical perfusion analysis was compared with the conventional phased-array probe in 30 patients. RESULTS: (1) The novel method is feasible in 81(89.01%) patients. (2) In protocol 1, to detect LAD stenosis, the best cut-off of ß, T, A, and MBF were 10.32, 3.28, 9.39, and 4.99, respectively. Area under the curve of ß, T, A, and MBF were .880, .881, .761, and .880, respectively. (3) In protocol 2, compared with phased-array probe, the quantitative analysis of high-frequency linear probe is of high reproducibility and could get good curve fitting (R2 = .29 vs. R2 = .71, P < .01). CONCLUSION: Observation of apical perfusion using this method is feasible and quantitative analysis allows an accurate and convenient identification of LAD stenosis. This method provides an alternative for patients who have difficulties in visualizing the apical region with a phased-array probe.

RESUMO

We aim to clarify the specific role of Karyopherin α2 (KPNA2) in the progression of laryngeal cancer, a kind of malignant tumor with a poor curative effect. We performed the bioinformatic analysis to obtain the ferroptosis-related differentially expressed genes. KPNA2 was screened out. Then the CCK-8 assay, wound healing assay, and transwell assay were used to clarify the changes in the proliferation, migration, and invasion abilities of laryngeal cancer cells after silencing KPNA2. The concentrations of iron ions, glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and malondialdehyde were evaluated by the corresponding detection kits. The expression levels of cyclooxygenase 2, Acyl-CoA synthetase long-chain family member 4, glutathione peroxidase 4, forkhead box O (FoxO)1a and FoxO3a were determined by Western Blot. A total of 45 ferroptosis-related differentially expressed genes in laryngeal cancer were obtained, and KPNA2 was selected after bioinformatic analysis. In ferroptosis-induced laryngeal cancer cells, the cell viability, migration rate, invasion ability, and the expression of glutathione peroxidase 4, glutathione, and superoxide dismutase were further decreased and the expression of cyclooxygenase 2, Acyl-CoA synthetase long-chain family member 4, iron ions, and malondialdehyde were further increased after silencing KPNA2. The expression levels of FoxO1a and FoxO3a in laryngeal cancer cells were increased by silencing KPNA2. KPNA2 may be a promising therapeutic target for laryngeal cancer. Down-regulation of KPNA2 can promote ferroptosis in laryngeal cancer by stimulating the FoxO signaling pathway.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND:  Infraorbital filler injection is a commonly used minimally invasive cosmetic procedure on the face, which can cause vascular complications. OBJECTIVE:  In this study, we aimed to explore the anatomical structure of the infraorbital vasculature and to establish an accurate protocol for infraorbital filler injection. METHODS:  The vascular structure of the infraorbital region was evaluated in 84 hemifacial specimens using computed tomography. Four segments (P1-P4) and five sections (C1-C5) were considered. We recorded the number of identified arteries in each slice and at each location and the number of deep arteries. Furthermore, we also measured the infraorbital artery (IOA) distribution. RESULTS:  At P1-P4, the lowest number of arteries was detected in segment P4, with a 317/1727 (18.4%) and 65/338 (2.3%) probability of total and deep arterial identification, respectively. The probabilities of encountering an identified artery at the five designated locations (C1-C5) were 277/1727 (16%), 318/1727 (18.4%), 410/1727 (23.7%), 397/1727 (23%), and 325/1727 (18.8%), respectively. The probability of an IOA being identified at C2 was 68/84 (81%). CONCLUSION:  We described an effective filler injection technique in the infraorbital region to minimize the associated risks. RESUMO

Epigenetic regulation plays substantial roles in human pathophysiology, which provides opportunities for intervention in human disorders through the targeting of epigenetic pathways. Recently, emerging evidence from preclinical studies suggested the potential in developing therapeutics of Alzheimer's disease (AD) by targeting bromodomain containing protein 4 (BRD4), an epigenetic regulatory protein. However, further characterization of AD-related pathological events is urgently required. Here, we investigated the effects of pharmacological degradation or inhibition of BRD4 on AD cell models. Interestingly, we found that both degradation and inhibition of BRD4 by ARV-825 and JQ1, respectively, robustly increased the levels of amyloid-beta (Aß), which has been associated with the neuropathology of AD. Subsequently, we characterized the mechanisms by which downregulation of BRD4 increases Aß levels. We found that both degradation and inhibition of BRD4 increased the levels of BACE1, the enzyme responsible for cleavage of the amyloid-beta protein precursor (APP) to generate Aß. Consistent with Aß increase, we also found that downregulation of BRD4 increased AD-related phosphorylated Tau (pTau) protein in our 3D-AD human neural cell culture model. Therefore, our results suggest that downregulation of BRD4 would not be a viable strategy for AD intervention. Collectively, our study not only shows that BRD4 is a novel epigenetic component that regulates BACE1 and Aß levels, but also provides novel and translational insights into the targeting of BRD4 for potential clinical applications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Ketamine is an intravenous anesthetic. However, whether ketamine can induce neurotoxicity and neurobehavioral deficits remains largely unknown. Delirium is a syndrome of acute brain dysfunction associated with anesthesia and surgery in patients, and tau protein may contribute to postoperative delirium. Finally, ketamine may affect the function of the endosome, the key organelle for tau release from neurons. Therefore, we set out to determine the effects of ketamine on delirium-like behavior in mice and on tau trafficking in cultured cells. METHODS: We used the buried-food test, open-field test, and Y-maze test in adult mice to assess the presence of delirium-like behavior in mice. We quantified tau amounts in the serum of mice. We used cell fraction methods to determine the effects of ketamine on tau intracellular trafficking, extracellular release, and endosome trafficking in cultured cells. RESULTS: Ketamine induced delirium-like behavior in mice and increased tau amounts in serum of mice. The ketamine treatments also led to increased accumulation of endosomes, as evidenced by increased endosomal markers Rab5 and Rab7. Moreover, ketamine inhibited endosome maturation, demonstrated by decreased membrane-bound but increased cytoplasm amounts of Rab5 and Rab7. Consequently, ketamine increased tau in the endosomes of cultured cells and the cell culture medium. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that ketamine may interfere with intracellular tau trafficking and induce delirium-like behavior, promoting future research regarding the potential neurotoxicity of anesthetics.

RESUMO

It is impossible to overlook the effects of microplastics on aquatic life as they continuously accumulate in aquatic environments. Aquatic crustaceans, as both predator and prey, play an important role in the food web and energy transmission. It is of great practical significance to pay attention to the toxic effects of microplastics on aquatic crustaceans. This review finds that most studies have shown that microplastics negatively affect the life history, behaviors and physiological functions of aquatic crustaceans under experimental conditions. The effects of microplastics of different sizes, shapes or types on aquatic crustaceans are different. Generally, smaller microplastics have more negative effects on aquatic crustaceans. Irregular microplastics have more negative effects on aquatic crustaceans than regular microplastics. When microplastics co-exist with other contaminants, they have a greater negative impact on aquatic crustaceans than single contaminants. This review contributes to rapidly understanding the effects of microplastics on aquatic crustaceans, providing a basic framework for the ecological threat of microplastics to aquatic crustaceans.

RESUMO

In multiple types of cancer, decreased tumour cell apoptosis during chemotherapy is indicative of decreased chemosensitivity. Forkhead box K2 (FOXK2), which is essential for cell fate, regulates cancer cell apoptosis through several post-translational modifications. However, FOXK2 acetylation has not been extensively studied. Here, we evaluated the effects of sirtiun 1 (SIRT1) on FOXK2 deacetylation. Our findings demonstrated that SIRT1 inhibition increased FOXK2-induced chemosensitivity to cisplatin and that K223 in FOXK2 was acetylated. Furthermore, FOXK2 K223 deacetylation reduced chemosensitivity to cisplatin in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, FOXK2 was acetylated by the acetyltransferase cAMP response element binding protein and deacetylated by SIRT1. Furthermore, cisplatin attenuated the interaction between FOXK2 and SIRT1. Cisplatin or SIRT1 inhibition enhanced FOXK2 acetylation, thereby reducing the nuclear distribution of FOXK2. Additionally, FOXK2 K223 acetylation significantly affected the expression of cell cycle-related and apoptosis-related genes in cisplatin-stimulated cancer cells, and FOXK2 K223 hyperacetylation promoted mitotic catastrophe, which enhanced chemosensitivity to cisplatin. Overall, our results provided insights into the mechanisms of SIRT1-mediated FOXK2 deacetylation, which was involved in chemosensitivity to cisplatin.

RESUMO

Stomatal movement participates in plant immunity by directly affecting the invasion of bacteria, but the genes that regulate stomatal immunity have not been well identified. Here, we characterised the function of the bZIP59 transcription factor from Arabidopsis thaliana, which is constitutively expressed in guard cells. The bzip59 mutant is partially impaired in stomatal closure induced by Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato strain (Pst) DC3000 and is more susceptible to Pst DC3000 infection. By contrast, the line overexpressing bZIP59 enhances resistance to Pst DC3000 infection. Furthermore, the bzip59 mutant is also partially impaired in stomatal closure induced by flagellin flg22 derived from Pst DC3000, and epistasis analysis revealed that bZIP59 acts upstream of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide (NO) and downstream of salicylic acid signalling in flg22-induced stomatal closure. In addition, the bzip59 mutant showed resistance and sensitivity to Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and Tobacco mosaic virus that do not invade through stomata, respectively. Collectively, our results demonstrate that bZIP59 plays an important role in the stomatal immunity and reveal that the same transcription factor can positively and negatively regulate disease resistance against different pathogens.

RESUMO

Persistent corneal epithelial defects (PED) can lead to irreversible blindness, seriously affecting the social function and life quality of these patients. When it comes to refractory PED, such as limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD), that does not respond to standard managements, stem cell therapy is an ideal method. Oral mucosal epithelium (OME) abundant with stem cells within the base, is a promising autologous biomaterial, with much resemblance to corneal epithelial structures. In this experiment, uncultured autologous rat OME was directly applied to alkali burned corneas. Clinical evaluations and histological analyses showed that the transplantation accelerated the healing process, presenting faster re-epithelization and better formation of corneal epithelial barrier. To further investigate the therapeutic mechanism, oral epithelium was transplanted to de-epithelialized cornea in vitro for organ culture. It could be observed that the oral epithelial cells could migrate to the corneal surface and form smooth and stratified epithelium. Immunofluorescence staining results showed that the re-formed epithelium derived from OME, maintained stemness and transformed to corneal epithelial phenotype to some extent. Corneal stroma may provide the suitable microenvironment to promote the trans-differentiation of oral stem cells. Thus, both in vivo and in vitro experiments suggested that oral epithelium could play a positive role in treating refractory PED.

RESUMO

Nano- and microplastics have become a serious global concern, threatening our living environments. Previous studies have shown that many organisms, including bacteria, animals, and plants, can be affected by microplastics. However, little is known about one ecologically important group of soil organisms, the protists. In this study, we investigated how polystyrene micro- and nanoplastics interacted with a soil amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum. The results showed that environmental concentrations of nano- and microplastics could negatively affect the soil amoeba's fitness and development. D. discoideum ingested both nano- and microplastics through phagocytosis but packed and excreted them during slug migration, which also promoted their biodegradation. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analyses revealed the formation of new oxygen-containing functional groups and the sign of possible oxidation of polystyrene. Also, nano- and microplastic exposure disrupted the nutrient and energy metabolisms of D. discoideum and affected the expression of key genes (e.g., cf45-1, dcsA, aprA, dymB, and gefB) related to morphogenesis and phagocytosis. In conclusion, our results show that nano- and microplastics have complex bilateral interactions with the soil amoeba, affecting each other's fate in the soil environment. This study provides new insights into how soil protists interact with nano- and microplastics in the soil ecosystem.

RESUMO

Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes) is a common commensal bacterium that is closely associated with the pathogenesis of acne. Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21), as a favorable regulator of glucose and lipid metabolism and insulin sensitivity, was recently shown to exert anti-inflammatory effects. The role and mechanism of FGF21 in the inflammatory reactions induced by C. acnes, however, have not been determined. The present study shows that FGF21 in the dermis inhibits epidermal C. acnes-induced inflammation in a paracrine manner while it functions on the epidermal layer through a receptor complex consisting of FGF receptor 1 (FGFR1) and ß-Klotho (KLB). The effects of FGF21 in heat-killed C. acnes-induced HaCaT cells and living C. acnes-injected mouse ears were examined. In the presence of C. acnes, FGF21 largely counteracted the activation of Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2), the downstream nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathways induced by C. acnes. FGF21 also significantly reduced the expression of proinflammatory cytokines, including interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α. Taken together, these findings indicate that FGF21 suppresses C. acnes-induced inflammation and might be used clinically in the management and treatment of acne.

RESUMO

Amoebae are protists that have complicated relationships with bacteria, covering the whole spectrum of symbiosis. Amoeba-bacterium interactions contribute to the study of predation, symbiosis, pathogenesis, and human health. Given the complexity of their relationships, it is necessary to understand the ecology and evolution of their interactions. In this paper, we provide an updated review of the current understanding of amoeba-bacterium interactions. We start by discussing the diversity of amoebae and their bacterial partners. We also define three types of ecological interactions between amoebae and bacteria and discuss their different outcomes. Finally, we focus on the implications of amoeba-bacterium interactions on human health, horizontal gene transfer, drinking water safety, and the evolution of symbiosis. In conclusion, amoeba-bacterium interactions are excellent model systems to investigate a wide range of scientific questions. Future studies should utilize advanced techniques to address research gaps, such as detecting hidden diversity, lack of amoeba genomes, and the impacts of amoeba predation on the microbiome.

RESUMO

The stacking of steel slag has detrimental effects mainly for the waste of resources and the pollution of environment. In this study, a novel method based on microbially induced calcium precipitation (MICP) was proposed by utilizing a type of microorganism named Bacillus mucilaginosus, which could secrete carbonic anhydrase (CA) through the metabolism process, accelerating the hydration of carbon dioxide (CO2) and thus facilitating the formation of carbonate ions (CO32-). First, comparing the biologically deposited calcium carbonate with the chemically deposited one, it was found that the crystallinity and crystal size of the biological deposition was lower, leading to its cementitious properties. Under the condition of 1 wt. (weight) % dosage, the carbonation degree increased from 66.34 to 86.25% and the compressive strength improved greatly from 7.4 to 11.2 MPa as well. The weight gain rate of biologically carbonated specimens was also twice as much as the directly carbonated ones. This work strongly demonstrated that biological carbonation technology could not only improve the CO2 sequestration potential of steel slag but also enhance the mechanical properties and durability of steel slag products. KEY POINTS: • Bacillus mucilaginosus could resuscitate and proliferate in the steel slag environment. • B. mucilaginosus secreted carbon anhydrase, which could accelerate the hydration of CO2 and facilitate the precipitation of calcium carbonate. • Biologically carbonated steel slag had greater mechanical performance than directly carbonated one.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The rational time for intubation during early mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO) in infants is unknown. To investigate the differences in clinical outcomes following MDO before and after a standardized extubation protocol implementation in infants. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed for infant patients under 1 year old undergoing MDO. The study population was composed of all patients presenting for evaluation and management who underwent MDO between November 2016 and February 2021. We divided them into 2 groups: the pre-protocol group and the protocol group. The inpatient charts of infants were assessed. The primary outcome was respiratory events after extubation. The secondary outcomes were duration of mechanical ventilation (MV), postoperative length of stay (LOS), and success rate of the first extubation. Other variables included age, sex, weight, height, and information related to diagnosis, distraction, anesthesia, and operation. The logistic regression model and linear regression model were used to calculate unadjusted and adjusted relative risk (RR) and mean difference (MD) for associations between 2 groups and the primary and secondary outcomes. RESULTS: There were 142 infants in the pre-protocol group and 135 infants in the protocol group. The patients in the protocol group were heavier in weight than those in the pre-protocol group (P<.05). The Cormack-Lehane grade and the duration of operation and anesthesia were higher and longer in the pre-protocol group than in the protocol group (P<.05). Respiratory events after extubation were significantly more common in the pre-protocol group than in the protocol group [21.1 vs. 9.6%, adjusted relative risk 0.46 (95% CI 0.22-0.89), P <.01]. CONCLUSIONS: Among infants undergoing MDO, the standardization of extubation practices can reduce respiratory events after extubation compared with traditional management.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Orthodenticle homeobox 1 (OTX1) is a transcription factor that plays an important role in various human cancers. However, the function of OTX1 in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) is largely unknown. We aimed to explore the roles of OTX1 in LSCC and its possible molecular mechanism. METHODS: The expression levels of OTX1 were assessed in LSCC cell lines and tissue samples. We further examined the effect of OTX1 on LSCC progression. The upstream regulator of OTX1 was identified using a computer algorithm and confirmed experimentally. RESULTS: OTX1 was highly expressed in 70.7% (70/99) of LSCC tissue samples. The OTX1 expression in LSCC was significantly correlated with lymph node metastasis. High OTX1 expression in patients with LSCC was correlated with poor prognosis. Knockdown of OTX1 inhibited proliferation, colony formation, migration and invasion in LSCC cells. Knockdown of OTX1 inhibited tumor growth in a xenograft mouse model. Mechanistically, OTX1 might act as a direct target of miR-129-5p. OTX1 enhanced tumorigenicity and tumor growth both in vitro and in vivo. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings support that OTX1 is an oncogene in LSCC tumorigenesis and progression. Furthermore, OTX1 is a direct target of miR-129-5p in LSCC cells. Taken together, OTX1 is a promising diagnostic and therapeutic marker for LSCC.

RESUMO

Degraded and low copy number (LCN) DNA samples are common challenging materials in forensic casework because they increase the difficulty of sample processing and reduce the possibility of obtaining genetic information from DNA. High-resolution melting (HRM) curve analysis is promising for genotyping genetic markers and has been applied to the detection of LCN and degraded DNA in the field of forensic science. However, the exact assessment based on HRM at multiple genetic markers from both degraded and LCN DNA materials has not been optimized. To explore the ability of HRM to genotype LCN and degraded DNA samples, we selected three genetic markers to genotype in experimental LCN and degraded DNA and practical hair shaft materials, which are often encountered as degraded and LCN DNA in forensic medicine. The results show that DNA samples of as low as 100 pg and as short as 60 bp were successfully genotyped by the HRM assay at all three genetic markers, whereas in hair shaft DNA, two loci were accurately genotyped. The HRM assay established in this study can be applied to LCN and degraded DNA analysis in forensic casework and can act as a reference point before genotyping short tandem repeat markers. Developing the HRM strategy for genotyping DNA genetic markers enriches detectable targets in hair shaft samples and provides valuable data for further exploration.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Using the Reflux Symptom Index (RSI), this nationwide study aimed to investigate the incidence, diagnostic status, risk factors, and common symptoms of adult laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD) at otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery (OHNS) clinics in China. METHODS: This multicenter cross-sectional survey began at the different institutions ranged from July to October 2017, and the duration was 12 months. A total of 90,440 eligible patients were finally enrolled from 72 medical institutions in China. All these patients completed the questionnaire based on RSI. In this study, LPRD was defined as RSI > 13. RESULTS: There were 9182 with LPRD among the 90,440 eligible participants (10.15%). However, only 1294 had a history of LPRD diagnosis among those with LPRD (14.09%). There were regional differences in the frequency of LPRD (P < 0.001). The proportions of patients with LPRD in males (vs. females), middle- and old-aged patients (vs. young), with current smoking history (vs. no smoking), and current drinking history (vs. no drinking) were significantly higher (all P < 0.001). Middle and old age, current smoking, and drinking history were independent predictors of LPRD (all P < 0.001, OR 1.240, 1.261, and 1.481, respectively). "Sensations of something stuck in throat or a lump in throat", "clearing throat", and "excess throat mucus or postnasal drip" were the most frequent clinical symptoms in patients with LPRD. CONCLUSIONS: LPRD has a high incidence at the OHNS clinics in China. However, the diagnostic status of this disease is not optimistic. Older age, smoking, and drinking history were risk factors for LPRD.

RESUMO

The vehicle license plate data obtained from video-imaging detectors contains a huge volume of information of vehicle trip rules and driving behavior characteristics. In this paper, a real-time vehicle trajectory prediction method is proposed based on historical trip rules extracted from vehicle license plate data in an urban road environment. Using the driving status information at intersections, the vehicle trip chain is acquired on the basis of the topologic graph of the road network and channelization of intersections. In order to obtain an integral and continuous trip chain in cases where data is missing in the original vehicle license plate, a trip chain compensation method based on the Dijkstra algorithm is presented. Moreover, the turning state transition matrix which is used to describe the turning probability of a vehicle when it passes a certain intersection is calculated by a massive volume of historical trip chain data. Finally, a k-step vehicle trajectory prediction model is proposed to obtain the maximum possibility of downstream intersections. The overall method is thoroughly tested and demonstrated in a realistic road traffic scenario with actual vehicle license plate data. The results show that vehicles can reach an average accuracy of 0.72 for one-step prediction when there are only 200 historical training data samples. The proposed method presents significant performance in trajectory prediction.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Dry eye symptoms as a complication of double-eyelid blepharoplasty are controversial. This article evaluates tear film dynamics and changes in dry eye symptoms after cosmetic double-eyelid blepharoplasty in young Asian female. METHODS: One hundred and twenty patients underwent full-incisional double-eyelid blepharoplasty. Subjective and objective parameters were documented before surgery, at 1 week, 1 month and 3 months post-surgery, which included Ocular Surface Disease Index questionnaire (OSDI), tear meniscus height (TMH), noninvasive breakup time (NIBUT), Schirmer I test, corneal and conjunctival fluorescein staining scores, and palpebral fissure height. Dry eyes were defined based on the DEWS II criteria: OSDI ≥ 13 points and NIBUT < 10 s. Patients were divided into two groups, group A included patients with redundant skin, while group B included patients with absence of redundant skin. RESULTS: The incident rate of dry eyes preoperatively, and at 1 week, 1 month and 3 months were 12.5%, 12.5%, 32.5%, and 16.67%. OSDI scores were significantly increased at 1 week (9.71 ± 10.07, P < 0.001) and 1 month (11.35 ± 12.28, P < 0.001) postoperatively. A significant increase in TMH, NIBUT and Schirmer's test I values were observed at 1 week post-surgery (P < 0.001). Patients in group A showed higher OSDI scores compared to group B at 1 week and 1 month (P = 0.051) post-surgery, and the other variables showed no difference between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: Cosmetic double-eyelid blepharoplasty may temporarily affect tear film dynamics and aggravate dry eye symptoms in young females. However, these changes generally recover 3 months postoperatively. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE IV: This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article.
