RESUMO

Light is an important environmental factor. Plants adapt to their light environment by developing the optimal phenotypes. Light-mediated hypocotyl growth is an ideal phenotype for studying how plants respond to light. Thus far, many signaling components in light-mediated hypocotyl growth have been reported. Here, we focused on identifying the transcription factors (TFs) involved in blue light-mediated hypocotyl growth. We analyzed the blue-light-mediated hypocotyl lengths of Arabidopsis TF-overexpressing lines and identified three NF-YC proteins, NF-YC7, NF-YC5, and NF-YC8 (NF-YCs being the short name), as the negative regulators in blue light-inhibited hypocotyl elongation. NF-YC-overexpressing lines developed longer hypocotyls than those of the wild type under blue light, while the deficient mutants nf-yc5nf-yc7 and nf-yc7nf-yc8 failed to exhibit hypocotyl elongation under blue light. NF-YCs physically interacted with CRY2 (cryptochrome 2) and PIF4/5 (phytochrome interacting factor 4 or 5), while the NF-YCs-PIF4/5 interactions were repressed by CRY2. Moreover, the overexpression of CRY2 or deficiency of PIF4/5 repressed NF-YC7-induced hypocotyl elongation under blue light. Further investigation revealed that NF-YC7 may increase CRY2 degradation and regulate PIF4/5 activities under blue light. Taken together, this study will provide new insight into the mechanism of how blue light inhibits hypocotyl elongation.

RESUMO

The role of PM2.5 (particles with aerodynamic diameters ≤ 2.5 µm) deposition in air quality changes over China remains unclear. By using the three-year (2013, 2015, and 2017) simulation results of the WRF/CUACE v1.0 model from a previous work (Zhang et al., 2021), a non-linear relationship between the deposition of PM2.5 and anthropogenic emissions over central-eastern China in cold seasons as well as in different life stages of haze events was unraveled. PM2.5 deposition is spatially distributed differently from PM2.5 concentrations and anthropogenic emissions over China. The North China Plain (NCP) is typically characterized by higher anthropogenic emissions compared to southern China, such as the middle-low reaches of Yangtze River (MLYR), which includes parts of the Yangtze River Delta and the Midwest. However, PM2.5 deposition in the NCP is significantly lower than that in the MLYR region, suggesting that in addition to meteorology and emissions, lower deposition is another important factor in the increase in haze levels. Regional transport of pollution in central-eastern China acts as a moderator of pollution levels in different regions, for example by bringing pollution from the NCP to the MLYR region in cold seasons. It was found that in typical haze events the deposition flux of PM2.5 during the removal stages is substantially higher than that in accumulation stages, with most of the PM2.5 being transported southward and deposited to the MLYR and Sichuan Basin region, corresponding to a latitude range of about 24°N-31°N.

RESUMO

Since the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan (air clean plan) issued in 2013, air quality has been in continuous improvement. The second stage of air clean plan since 2018 was focused on O3 controlling, but it still didn't decline so significantly as PM2.5. This study conducted a long-term observation on black carbon (BC) and utilized the observational data of other air pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2, CO and O3), the meteorological elements and the vertical sounding data of PBL in Nanjing. In the daytime (08:00-20:00), PM2.5 kept decreasing from 2015 to 2020 at the rate of 4.8 µg⋅m-3⋅a-1, however, BC increased at the rate of 0.6 µg⋅m-3⋅a-1, which has led to the continuous growth of BC/PM2.5 (0.9%⋅a-1). However, during this period, O3 was relatively stable and, in 2020, it returned below its value in 2015 after slight increases in 2017 and 2018. Meanwhile, the average surface temperature had increased by around 1.0 °C during 2015-2019 at the rate of 0.3 °C⋅a-1. Also, the average height of the inversion layer had increased significantly by 494.0 and 176.7 m at 20:00 and 08:00, whose growth ratio was up to 57% and 25%, respectively. The above observation results have formed a set of chain reactions as follows. The growth of the surface BC caused the surface temperature to rise due to the increasing heating effect of BC. The continuous growth of the surface temperature made it easier for the PBL height to develop, which led to the lift of the inversion layer in the PBL and the larger atmospheric environment capacity. Ultimately, it is conducive to the diffusion of the near surface pollutants, thus helping reduce their concentrations, which offsets the increasing tendency of O3 and add to the decreasing trend of PM2.5. This phenomenon is the most remarkable in summer, with the fastest increasing rate of temperature (0.8 °C⋅a-1) and O3 (3.9 µg⋅m-3⋅a-1) during 2015-2019 (excluding 2020 to erase the great effect of COVID-19 lockdown on emissions).

RESUMO

To control the spread of COVID-19, rigorous restrictions have been implemented in China, resulting in a great reduction in pollutant emissions. In this study, we evaluated the air quality in the Yangtze River Delta during the COVID-19 lockdown period using satellite and ground-based data, including particle matter (PM), trace gases, water-soluble ions (WSIs) and black carbon (BC). We found that the impacts of lockdown policy on air quality cannot be accurately assessed using MODIS aerosol optical depth (AOD) data, whereas the tropospheric nitrogen dioxide (NO2) vertical column density can well reflect the influences of these restrictions on human activities. Compared to the pre-COVID period, the PM2.5, PM10, NO2, carbon monoxide (CO), BC and WSIs during the lockdown in Suzhou were observed to decrease by 37.2%, 38.3%, 64.5%, 26.1%, 53.3% and 58.6%, respectively, while the sulfur dioxide (SO2) and ozone (O3) increased by 1.5% and 104.7%. The WSIs ranked in the order of NO3- > NH4+ > SO42- > Cl- > Ca2+ > K+ > Mg2+ > Na+ during the lockdown period. By comparisons with the ion concentrations during the pre-COVID period, we found that the ions NO3-, NH4+, SO42-, Cl-, Ca2+, K+ and Na+ decreased by 66.3%, 48.8%, 52.9%, 56.9%, 57.9% and 76.3%, respectively, during the lockdown, in contrast to Mg2+, which increased by 30.2%. The lockdown policy was found to have great impacts on the diurnal variations of Cl-, SO42-, Na+ and Ca2+.

RESUMO

The beam spreading and evolution behavior of the intensity profile and coherent vortices of partially coherent, four-petal elliptic Gaussian vortex beams propagating in atmospheric turbulence are studied. The analytical expressions for cross-spectral density function, as well as root mean square (rms) beam width, are derived based on the extended Huygens-Fresnel principle. Results showed that, unlike the partially coherent four-petal Gaussian vortex beams, the partially coherent four-petal elliptic Gaussian vortex beam could change its petal number into six. The dependencies of occurrence, appearance, and transition speed from four- to six-petal profile on the topological charge, the beam order, and the ellipticity factor are illustrated. The far field behaviors of partially coherent four-petal elliptic Gaussian vortex beams propagating in atmospheric turbulence and are compared in free space. Beams with larger topological charge, smaller beam order, and larger ellipticity factor were found to be less influenced by atmospheric turbulence. Further, the ellipticity factor can be used as an additional degree of freedom in controlling the conservation distance of coherence vortices' topological charge.

RESUMO

The number of O3 pollution days indicates an overall increasing trend over 2014-2021 in Wuxi in the Yangtze River Delta, with the pollution concentrations of MDA8-O3 between 186 and 200 µg·m-3. Specifically, a total of 62 POPEs (persistent O3 pollution events), defined as episodes with 3 or more continuous O3 pollution days, were observed for the 8 years. Using a multi-linear regression model, we find that the meteorology can explain approximately 56.5 % of the O3 variations for the 8 years in Wuxi, with temperature being the most crucial meteorological factor, followed by relative humidity (RH) and wind speeds. High temperature, low RH, low wind speeds and downward airflows significantly correlate with POPE-O3 changes. Three types of synoptic circulations are further identified during the POPEs from 2014 to 2021 by the T-mode (T-PCA) classification method. The primary circulation patterns governing the interannual changes of POPEs are characterized by the largest positive anomalies of temperature and planetary boundary layer (PBL) height; moreover, a distinct vertical mixing process is observed with uplifting airflows in the convective PBL during the afternoon and sinking airflows in the stable PBL at night, which is incredibly conducive to the downward transport of O3 after its upward delivery during daytime and substantially contributes to midnight O3 at the surface. The other two circulation types are associated with uniform descending flows in the PBL; as a result, surface O3 accumulates only near the ground and decreases significantly at night due to the titration effect. This study systematically highlights the influence of critical meteorological factors regulated by different synoptic circulations on the POPE in Wuxi, which provides a scientific basis for pollution control and prediction.

RESUMO

Purpose: Immune microenvironment plays an important role in aortic dissection (AD). Therefore, novel immune biomarkers may facilitate AD prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. This study aimed at mining key immune-related genes and relevant mechanisms involved in AD pathogenesis. Patients and Methods: Key immune cells in AD were identified by ssGESA algorithm. Next, genes associated with key immune cells were screened by weighted gene coexpression network analysis (WGCNA). Then hub immune genes were picked from protein-protein interaction network of overlapped genes from differential expression and WGCNA analyses by cytohubba plug-in. Their diagnostic potential was evaluated in two independent cohorts from GEO database. In addition, the expressions of hub immune genes were determined by quantitative RT-PCR, immunohistochemistry, and Western blotting in dissected and normal aortic tissues. Results: Activated B cells, CD56dim natural killer cells, eosinophils, gamma delta T cells, immature B cells, natural killer cells and type 17 T helper cells were identified as key immune cells in AD. Thereafter, a gene module significantly correlated with key immune cells were found by WGCNA method. Subsequently, KDR, IGF1, NOS3, PECAM1, GAPDH, FLT1, DLL4, CDH5, VWF, and TEK were identified as hub immune cell related genes by PPI network analysis, which may be potential diagnostic markers for AD, as evidenced by ROC curves. Moreover, the decreased expression of VWF in AD was validated at both mRNA and protein levels, and its expression was significantly positive correlated with the marker of smooth muscle cells, ACTA2, in AD. Further immunofluorescent results showed that VWF was colocalized with ACTA2 in aortic tissues. Conclusion: We identified key immune cells and hub immune cell-related genes involved in AD. Moreover, we found that VWF was co-expressed with the smooth muscle cell marker ACTA2, indicating the important role of VWF in smooth muscle cell loss in AD pathogenesis.

RESUMO

Regional transport of air pollutants is a crucial factor influencing atmospheric environment, and aerosol radiative forcing (ARF) feedback to atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) structure and ambient air pollution is yet to be comprehensively understood over the receptor region of regional transport. By simulating meteorology and air pollutants during a heavy PM2.5 pollution event with WRF-Chem model, we quantitatively investigated the ARF and ABL interaction for PM2.5 pollution over the Twain-Hu Basin (THB), a key receptor region of regional transport over central China. Driven by northerly winds, PM2.5 was transported from upstream north China to downstream THB accompanied by high PM2.5 levels in the free troposphere. The ARF exacerbated local PM2.5 accumulation by up to 20 µg m-3 and inhibited the impact of regional transport on PM2.5 levels in the ABL with reducing near-surface PM2.5 concentrations of 5 µg m-3 over the THB. The ARF-intensified air temperature inversion at the top of ABL was unfavorable for the transported air pollutants crossing the ABL top to the near-surface layer, thus weakening the impact of regional PM2.5 transport on air quality in the receptor region. Meanwhile, the ARF of transported PM2.5 induced updrafts in the free troposphere, promoting vertical mixing of air pollutants with positive feedback on increasing secondary PM2.5 concentrations in the free troposphere. The ARF induced more and less secondary PM2.5 formations respectively in the free troposphere and the near-surface layer during the regional transport period of air pollution. These results enhance our comprehension of aerosol-meteorology feedback in regional changes of atmospheric environment with inverse effects of ARF on PM2.5 pollution of local accumulation and regional transport.

RESUMO

The impact of thermally driven mountain-valley breezes (MVB) on the atmospheric environment remains poorly understood, especially in ozone (O3)-polluted regions with complex underlying topography. To address this knowledge gap, we focused on the western Sichuan Basin (SCB), situated immediately east of the Tibetan Plateau (TP), which is considered susceptible to MVB coupled with severe O3 pollution in southwest China. We revealed the MVB driving diurnal O3 variations and meteorological mechanisms using surface observations and ERA5 reanalysis data. Local MVB days accounted for up to 47% of cases in the summers of 2015-2022. Driven by the MVB, the near-surface O3 concentrations increased by 8.8%, with 12.7% and 50.0% deterioration in the O3 light and moderate exceedance rates, respectively, on the western SCB edge. The daytime upslope valley breeze with 20% higher wind speed drove the westward transport of rich O3 and precursors from the upwind-polluted inner SCB towards its western edge, and the O3 photochemical production, followed by intensifying solar radiation and air temperature, gave rise to 14.8% of surface O3 concentrations over the western SCB edge. The nighttime downward mountain breeze with a 20% increase in wind speed could transport the rich O3 in the mountainous area to the basin edge, causing O3 levels to increase by 2.8%. In summary, we quantitatively assessed the impacts of MVB on changes in O3 concentrations and air quality along with its meteorological mechanisms, facilitating a comprehensive understanding of meteorological drivers in the atmospheric environment.

RESUMO

Due to the implementation of air pollution control measures in China, air quality has significantly improved, although there are still additional issues to be addressed. This study used the long-term trends of air pollutants to discuss the achievements and challenges in further improving air quality in China. The Kolmogorov-Zurbenko (KZ) filter and multiple-linear regression (MLR) were used to quantify the meteorology-related and emission-related trends of air pollutants from 2014 to 2022 in China. The KZ filter analysis showed that PM2.5 decreased by 7.36 ± 2.92% yr-1, while daily maximum 8-h ozone (MDA8 O3) showed an increasing trend with 3.71 ± 2.89% yr-1 in China. The decrease in PM2.5 and increase in MDA8 O3 were primarily attributed to changes in emission, with the relative contribution of 85.8% and 86.0%, respectively. Meteorology variations, including increased ambient temperature, boundary layer height, and reduced relative humidity, also contributed to the reduction of PM2.5 and the enhancement of MDA8 O3. The emission-related trends of PM2.5 and MDA8 O3 exhibited continuous decrease and increase, respectively, from 2014 to 2022, while the variation rates slowed during 2018-2020 compared to that during 2014-2017, highlighting the challenges in further improving air quality, particularly in simultaneously reducing PM2.5 and O3. This study recommends reducing NH3 emissions from the agriculture sector in rural areas and transport emissions in urban areas to further decrease PM2.5 levels. Addressing O3 pollution requires the reduction of O3 precursor gases based on site-specific atmospheric chemistry considerations.

RESUMO

In this study, the aerosol size distributions, cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) number concentration (NCCN), single-particle chemical composition and meteorological data were collected from May 12 to June 8, 2017, at the summit of Mt. Tai. The effects of new particle formation (NPF) events and aerosol chemical components on CCN at Mt. Tai were analyzed in detail. The results showed that, NPF events significantly enhanced the CCN population, and the enhancement effect increased with increasing supersaturation (SS) value at Mt.Tai. NCCN at SS ranging from 0.1 to 0.9 % on NPF days was 10.9 %, 36.5 %, 44.6 %, 53.5 % and 51.5 % higher than that on non-NPF days from 10:00-13:00 as NPF events progressed. The effect of chemical components on CCN activation under the influence of NPF events was greater than that in the absence of NPF events. The correlation coefficients of EC-Nitrate particles (EC-Sulfate particles) and CCN at all SS levels on NPF days were 1.31-1.59 times (1.17-1.35 times) higher than those on non-NPF days. Nitrate particles promoted CCN activation but sulfate particles inhibited activation at Mt. Tai. There are differences or even opposite effects of the same group of particles on CCN activation under the influence of NPF events in different air masses. EC-Sulfate particles inhibited CCN activation at all SS levels for type I but weakly promoted activation at lower SS ranging from 0.1 to 0.3 % and weakly inhibited it at higher 0.9 % SS for type II. OCEC particles significantly inhibited CCN activation for type II, and this effect decreased with increasing SS. OCEC particles only weakly inhibited activation at SS ranging from 0.5 to 0.7 % for type I. OCEC particles only weakly inhibited this process at 0.1 % SS, while they very weakly promoted activation for SS > 0.1 %. This reveals that the CCN activity is not only related to the chemical composition of the particles, but the mixing state also has an important effect on the CCN activity.

RESUMO

Atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) structure was a crucial factor in altering the vertical aerosol distribution and modulating the impact of regional aerosol transport on the atmospheric environment in the receptor region. The long-term characteristics of ABL structures for different vertical aerosol distributions and the distinct influencing mechanisms between daytime and nighttime aerosol transport interacting with the diurnal ABL transition have rarely been studied in the receptor regions. Based on 9-year (2013-2021) satellite-retrieved profiles of aerosol extinction coefficients and meteorological sounding data, we targeted Wuhan, an urban city with noteworthy transport contribution in central China, to reveal the general wintertime transport height of ∼500 m and the corresponding unstable ABL structure during regional transport. By comparing typical daytime and nighttime aerosol transport with high-resolution Lidar observations, the aerosol transport near the ABL top coupled with intense mechanical mixing provided sufficient meteorological conditions for heavy aerosol pollution formation in the receptor regions, which was more favorable during nighttime transport followed by the adequate ABL development after sunrise. These findings enhance our comprehension of the ABL impact on air pollution in the receptor regions, which have implications for the precise prevention and control of the regional atmospheric environment.

RESUMO

Ozone (O3) pollution with excessive near-surface O3 levels has been an important environmental issue in China, although the anthropogenic emission reductions (AER) have improved air quality since 2013. In this study, we investigated the sensitivities of atmospheric chemical environment with the urban and rural changes to the AER targeting a typical O3 pollution episode over North China in summer 2019, by conducting two WRF-Chem simulation experiments under two scenarios of anthropogenic emission inventories of years 2012 and 2019 with the meteorological conditions in the 2019 summertime O3 pollution episode for excluding the meteorological impacts on O3 pollution. The results show that the unbalanced AER aroused more serious O3 pollution in urban and rural areas. The intense NO reduction was responsible for the significant increments of urban O3, while the falling NO2 and NO synergistically devoted to the slight O3 variations in rural areas. Induced by the recent-year AER, the urban O3 production was governed by VOCs-limited and transition regime, whereas the NOx-limited regime dominated over rural areas in North China. Also, the AER reinforced the atmospheric oxidation capacity with the elevations of atmospheric oxidants O3 and ROx radicals, strengthening the chemical conversions to secondary inorganic particles. In both urban and rural areas, the sharp drop in SO2 caused a decrease in sulfate fraction, while the enhanced AOC accelerated the transformation to nitrate even when NOx was reduced. The AER induced nitrate to occupy the principal position in secondary PM2.5 in urban and rural areas. The AER promoted daytime and suppressed nighttime the nitrate production in urban areas, and more vigorous conversion of secondary aerosols were found in rural areas with much lower AOC increments. This study provides insights from a case study over North China in distinct responses of urban and rural O3 pollution with secondary particle changes to AER in urban and rural atmospheric environment changes, with implications for an effective abatement strategy on O3 pollution.

RESUMO

The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is essential in modulating climate change in downstream Eastern China (EC). As a meteorology-sensitive pollutant, changes in ozone (O3) in connection with the TP have received limited attention. In this study, using climate analysis of the China High Air Pollutants O3 product and ERA5 reanalysis data of meteorology for 1980-2020, the effect of springtime TP thermal forcing on the warm season (April-September) O3 pollution over EC was investigated. The strong TP thermal effect significantly modulates the interannual variations in O3 pollution with a dipole pattern over EC, inducing more O3 pollution in northern EC regions and alleviating O3 pollution in the southern regions. In northern (southern) EC, strong TP thermal forcing triggers a significant anomalous high (low) pressure center accompanied by anticyclonic (cyclonic) anomalies, resulting in decreased (increased) total cloud cover, increased (reduced) surface downward solar radiation and air temperature, which are conducive to the anomalous increase (decrease) in surface O3 concentrations. Moreover, the key sources of springtime thermal forcing over the TP influence the major O3 pollution regions over southern and northern EC with an inverse pattern, depending on their locations and orientations to the large topography of the TP. This research reveals an important driving factor for the dipole interannual variation in O3 pollution over EC, providing a new prospect for the effect of the TP on atmospheric environmental change.

RESUMO

By analyzing environmental and meteorological monitoring data over recent years of 2015-2022, the Twain-Hu Basin (THB) in central China was identified as a regional O3 pollution center over China with the highest increasing trend at 1.10 %⸱yr-1 in interannual variations of O3 concentrations with deteriorating O3 pollution over recent years. We explored the spatiotemporal variations in O3 pollution in the THB with ozone suppression (OS) under high air temperature over metropolitan, small urban, and mountainous areas. The bipolarized interannual trends in interannual O3 variations in urban and mountainous areas over central China were characterized with the increasing and decreasing 90th percentiles of the daily maximum 8-h (MDA8-90) O3 concentrations respectively in polluted urban areas and clean mountainous areas over recent eight years. The changes of the near-surface O3 concentrations with air temperature exhibited the inflection points of OS from increasing to decreasing O3 at air temperature of 30.5 °C in mountainous areas, 32.5 °C in small urban areas, and 34.5 °C in metropolitan areas, and the intensity of OS was estimated in the ranking with mountainous areas (-2.30 µg⸱m-3⸱°C-1) > small urban areas (-1.96 µg⸱m-3⸱°C-1) > metropolitan areas (-1.54 µg⸱m-3⸱°C-1), indicating that the OS was more significant over the lower-O3 mountainous areas. This study has implications for understanding O3 pollution variations with the meteorological drivers.

RESUMO

FAM136A promotes the progression and metastasis of various tumors. However, there are few studies on the role of FAM136A in esophageal cancer (ESCA). The TCGA, GTEx, and GEO databases are employed to analyze the expression of FAM136A in ESCA, and qPCR and TMA experiments are performed for validation. Enrichment analyzes are performed to investigate the association of FAM136A expression with immune features, m6A modification, alternative splicing, cuproptosis, and the ceRNA network via bioinformatics analysis. FAM136A is highly expressed in ESCA and correlated with lymph node metastasis and overall survival (OS). Bioinformatics analysis suggested that FAM136A may participate in the following processes to promote ESCA development and progression: 1) Promotion of mast cells infiltration to influence the ESCA immune microenvironment, 2) HNRNPC upregulation to regulate m6A modification, 3) ALYREF upregulation to increase the occurrence of retained intron (RI) events, 4) CDK5RAP1 upregulation to achieve inhibition of tumor cell apoptosis, and 5) promotion of ESCA progression through the lncRNA SNHG15/hsa-miR-29c-3p/FAM136A ceRNA network. FAM136A is a potential biomarker for ESCA diagnosis and treatment response evaluation, and the underlying mechanisms may be associated with immune infiltration, m6A modification, alternative splicing, cuproptosis, and the ceRNA regulatory network.

RESUMO

Fire emissions in Southeast Asia transported to southern China every spring (March-May), influencing not only the air quality but also the weather and climate. However, the multi-year variations and magnitude of this impact on aerosol radiation forcing in southern China remain unclear. Here, we quantified the multi-year contributions of fire emissions in Indo-China Peninsula (ICP) region to aerosol radiation forcing in the various southern Chinese provinces during the fire season (March-May) of 2013-2019 combining the 3-dimension chemical transport model and the Column Radiation Model (CRM) simulations. The models' evaluations showed they reasonably capture the temporal and spatial distribution of surface aerosol concentrations and column aerosol optical properties over the study regions. The fire emissions over the ICP region were found to increase the aerosol optical depth (AOD) value by 0.1 (15 %) and reduce the single scattering albedo (SSA) in three southern regions of China (Yunnan-YN, Guangxi-GX, and Guangdong-GD from west to east), owing to increases in the proportions of black carbon (BC, 0.4 % ± 0.1 %) and organic carbon (OC, 3.0 % ± 0.9 %) within the aerosol compositions. The transported smoke aerosols cooled surface but heated the atmosphere in the southern China regions, with the largest mean reduction of -5 Wm-2 (-3 %) in surface shortwave radiation forcing and the maximum daily contributions of about -15 Wm-2 (-15 %) to the atmosphere radiation forcing in the GX region, followed by the GD and YN regions. The impacts of ICP fire emissions on aerosol optical and radiative parameters declined during 2013-2019, with the highest rate of 0.393 ± 0.478 Wm-2 yr-1 in the GX for the shortwave radiation forcing in the atmosphere. Besides, their yearly changes in the contribution were consistent with the annual fire emissions in the ICP region. Such strong radiative perturbations of ICP fire emissions were expected to influence regional meteorology in southern China and should be considered in the climate simulations.

RESUMO

Aerosol-cloud interactions play a vital role in climate change. This study leverages observations from the King-350 aircraft over the North China Plain on November 29, 2019, to examine aerosol and cloud microphysical characteristics of mixed-phase clouds. Through detailed vertical and spectral distributions, we investigate aerosol, cloud droplet, and ice crystal distributions in seeded clouds (SC) and natural precipitating clouds (NPC) within the same cloud system. From the vertical profile, SC and NPC have similar vertical distributions of aerosol and cloud droplets, with over 95 % of aerosols concentrated below 1600 m near the ground. Cloud droplets are more evenly distributed within the two clouds, cloud droplet number concentrations (Nc) in SC were three orders of magnitude higher than in NPC. Ice water content (IWC) and ice crystal number concentration (Ni) show distinct layer preferences-accumulating predominantly in SC's top layer and NPC's middle layer. From spectral distribution, a smaller proportion of cloud droplets (40-50 µm in diameter, the same hereafter) in SC compared to NPC. Rimed ice crystals and globular graupel (1325-1550 µm in diameter) were in SC, while plate and irregular ice crystals (300-450 µm) were in NPC with an order of magnitude higher than in SC. These microphysical differences highlight the complexity of cloud seeding efficacy, which varies based on cloud conditions and microphysical properties. In the first seeding, Ni increased by 1-2 orders of magnitude (125-300 µm) in the high Nc (Nc > 1.11 × 105 L-1) region. Seeding in low Nc (Nc < 1.11 × 105 L-1) regions was hard to be effective, especially in low Nc and low liquid water content (LWC) (LWC < 0.122 g/m3) regions. In the second seeding, ice crystals (125-250 µm) produced by the first seeding enhance the seeding efficiency. The responded regions were more sensitive to subsequent seeding, resulting in stronger reactions or longer duration.

RESUMO

PM2.5 pollution has been alleviated significantly since implementing the Clean Air Action in China, whereas a concomitant increase in O3 pollution has been observed. In the megacity of China, haze episodes can be aggravated by the interaction between aerosols and the planetary boundary layer (PBL). Such interactions have been largely investigated in the middle and upper PBL and less so near the ground. Here, using observations from the ground and in the PBL during summer, we find that haze pollution has decreased notably, but O3 pollution has worsened in Nanjing. PM2.5, black carbon (BC), BC/PM2.5, O3 and planetary boundary layer height (PBLH) changed at rates of -0.34 µg m-3·month-1, 13 ng m-3·month-1, 0.08%·month-1, -0.06 µg m-3·month-1 and 1.5 m month-1, respectively (3.5 m·month-1excluding data from 2020) during 2015-2020. The height of the lower boundary of the temperature inversion layer decreased first and then increased at a rate of 5.4 m month-1 between 2017 and 2020. As the PM2.5 concentration has decreased by 42.4% over the last six years, aerosol extinction has weakened in the PBL. Subsequently, the solar radiation has strengthened near the ground, which is conducive to forming O3 and is mainly concentrated between 0 and 600 m. Due to the heating effect of BC, which can increase the temperature near the ground, the lower boundary of the inversion layer has been elevated, which further mitigates and aggravates the haze and O3 pollution, respectively.

RESUMO

Prominent O3 pollution over Twain-Hu Basin (THB) is observed during 2014-2020, with the annual concentrations of near-surface O3 in the range of 49-65 µg·m-3, larger than those in Sichuan Basin (SCB) and Pearl River Delta (PRD) in China. The increasing rate of O3 over THB (1.9 µg·m-3·yr-1) is also higher than the counterparts in Yangtze River Delta (YRD), SCB and PRD. Besides, the exceeding rate of O3 levels in THB rises from 3.9 % in 2014 to 11.5 % in 2019, greater than those in SCB and PRD as well. Based on the GEOS-Chem simulations in summer over 2013-2020, we find that nonlocal O3 contributes dominantly to THB, with YRD being its principle source region, during regional O3 transport over the central and eastern China. Here, the imported O3 in THB is found to be mainly driven by the wind fields and the windward topography. The East Asia Summer Monsoon (EASM) circulations significantly regulate the interannual anomalies of imported O3 over THB. In the years with abnormally higher O3 import over THB, the EASM weakens, and the location of Western Pacific Subtropical High tends to more eastward compared with the years with abnormally lower O3 import. Particularly, an abnormal easterly winds at the surface of YRD region effectively favor the delivery of O3 from YRD to THB. In addition, the weak EASM promotes and undermines the regional transport of O3 from NCP and PRD to THB, respectively. Correspondingly, the O3 concentrations over THB can be fluctuated greatly depending on the degree of regional O3 transport regulated by the EASM circulations, which indicates a complex relationship between sources and receptors of O3 transport for air quality improvement.
