RESUMO

Optical resonant cavities with high quality factor (Q-factor) are widely used in science and technology for their capabilities of strong confinement of light and enhanced light-matter interaction. The 2D photonic crystal structure with bound states in the continuum (BICs) is a novel concept for resonators with ultra-compact device size, which can be used to generate surface emitting vortex beams based on symmetry-protected BICs at the Γ point. Here, to the best of our knowledge, we demonstrate the first photonic crystal surface emitter with a vortex beam by using BICs monolithically grown on CMOS-compatible silicon substrate. The fabricated quantum-dot BICs-based surface emitter operates at 1.3 µm under room temperature (RT) with a low continuous wave (CW) optically pumped condition. We also reveal the BIC's amplified spontaneous emission with the property of a polarization vortex beam, which is promising to provide a novel degree of freedom in classical and quantum realms.

RESUMO

Nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptors (NLRs), including NLRAs, NLRBs (also known as NAIPs), NLRCs, and NLRPs, are a major subfamily of pattern recognition receptors (PRRs). Owing to a recent surge in research, NLRs have gained considerable attention due to their involvement in mediating the innate immune response and perpetuating inflammatory pathways, which is a central phenomenon in the pathogenesis of multiple diseases, including renal diseases. NLRs are expressed in different renal tissues during pathological conditions, which suggest that these receptors play roles in acute kidney injury, obstructive nephropathy, diabetic nephropathy, IgA nephropathy, lupus nephritis, crystal nephropathy, uric acid nephropathy, and renal cell carcinoma, among others. This review summarises recent progress on the functions of NLRs and their mechanisms in the pathophysiological processes of different types of renal diseases to help us better understand the role of NLRs in the kidney and provide a theoretical basis for NLR-targeted therapy for renal diseases.

RESUMO

Microscale local strain gauges with low-power consumption and large strain range were demonstrated by integrating microdisk lasers in a deformable and flexible polymer substrate. The lasing spectra of microdisk lasers were sensitive to substrate deformation and can be modulated by strains. The measured relative wavelength tuning under strains of the novel strain sensors illustrated a linear behavior with the gauge factor being ~4.0 nm and ~6.7 nm per stretching unit for microdisk lasers with the diameter of 1.2 µm and 1.5 µm, which corresponding to a smooth wavelength tuning of 1.5 nm and 2.6 nm under 36% strain, respectively. In addition, to being used as microscale strain gauges, the visible lasers on the deformable substrate can also function as a tunable light source for the photonic integrated circuits and flexible laser projection displays.

A flexible photonic crystal cavity, consisting of a III-V active layer embedded in a flexible medium, with a line-defect by removing three air holes for nanoscale structural deformation detection is proposed and optimized. The cavity can hold the photonic band-gap modes with the fundamental mode located at approximately 686 nm, overlapping with the photoluminescence spectrum of the InGaP/InGaAlP quantum wells. Results of finite-difference time-domain simulations indicate that the L3 cavity features an ultra-compact mode volume of 10-3 µm3 and high quality factor of 104 at a sub-micron footprint within the studied visible wavelength. Theoretical optical strain sensitivities of approximately 4.5 and 3 nm per ε (1% strain for both) for the x and y directions are predicted, respectively. When the cavity is under large bending curvatures, the Q factor rapidly decreases from 8000 to 2000.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to identify plasma biomarkers of atrial fibrillation (AF) progression and recurrence after catheter ablation. METHODS: Using AF gene profiling data from GEO database, a weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) was conducted to determine the most significant module and hub genes associated with AF. Subsequently, 318 consecutively admitted patients who had undergone radiofrequency catheter ablation were enrolled in this study. RESULTS: WGCNA results revealed that paired immunoglobulin-like type 2 receptor alpha (PILRA) was the only black module gene highly correlated with clinical traits. Plasma soluble PILRα (sPILRα) levels were elevated in patients with AF and significantly elevated in patients with persistent versus paroxysmal AF (4.64 ± 2.74 vs. 3.04 ± 1.56 ng/mL, p < 0.001). Elevated sPILRα level was an independent risk factor for AF progression even after adjusting for traditional factors (adjusted odds ratio: 3.06, 95 % confidence interval [CI]: 1.88-5.27, p < 0.001) and AF recurrence after catheter ablation in patients with persistent AF (adjusted hazards ratio: 4.41, 95 % CI: 1.22-15.92, p = 0.023). CONCLUSIONS: WGCNA screening of GEO microarray gene profiling data showed PILRA expression levels to be correlated with AF progression and recurrence after catheter ablation in patients with persistent AF.

RESUMO

Robust laser sources are a fundamental building block for contemporary information technologies. Originating from condensed-matter physics, the concept of topology has recently entered the realm of optics, offering fundamentally new design principles for lasers with enhanced robustness. In analogy to the well-known Majorana fermions in topological superconductors, Dirac-vortex states have recently been investigated in passive photonic systems and are now considered as a promising candidate for robust lasers. Here, we experimentally realize the topological Dirac-vortex microcavity lasers in InAs/InGaAs quantum-dot materials monolithically grown on a silicon substrate. We observe room-temperature continuous-wave linearly polarized vertical laser emission at a telecom wavelength. We confirm that the wavelength of the Dirac-vortex laser is topologically robust against variations in the cavity size, and its free spectral range defies the universal inverse scaling law with the cavity size. These lasers will play an important role in CMOS-compatible photonic and optoelectronic systems on a chip.

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an age-related disease, while telomeres play a central role in aging. But the relationship between AF and telomere length (LTL) is still controversial. This study aims to examine the potential causal association between AF and LTL by using Mendelian randomization (MR). Methods: Bidirectional two-sample MR, expression and protein quantitative trait loci (eQTL and pQTL)-based MR were performed using genetic variants from United Kingdom Biobank, FinnGen, and a meta-analysis study, which comprised nearly 1 million participants in the Atrial Fibrillation Study and 470,000 participants in the Telomere Length Study. Apart from the inverse variance weighted (IVW) approach as the main MR analysis, complementary analysis approaches and sensitivity analysis were applied. Results: The forward MR revealed a significant causal estimate for the genetically predicted AF with LTL shortening [IVW: odds ratio (OR) = 0.989, p = 0.007; eQTL-IVW: OR = 0.988, p = 0.005; pQTL-IVW: OR = 0.975, p < 0.005]. But in the reverse MR analysis, genetically predicted LTL has no significant correlation with AF (IVW: OR = 0.995, p = 0.916; eQTL-IVW: OR = 0.999, p = 0.995; pQTL-IVW: OR = 1.055, p = 0.570). The FinnGen replication data yielded similar findings. Sensitivity analysis ensured the stability of the results. Conclusion: The presence of AF leads to LTL shortening rather than the other way around. Aggressive intervention for AF may delay the telomere attrition.

Background: Myeloperoxidase (MPO), released by activated neutrophils, is significantly increased in atrial fibrillation (AF). MPO may play a role in the progression of atrial fibrillation and further involved in AF recurrence after catheter ablation. We compared plasma MPO levels in paroxysmal and persistent AF and explored their role in AF recurrence after catheter ablation. Methods: Plasma MPO levels were measured in consecutive patients with paroxysmal AF (n = 225) and persistent AF (n = 106). Samples of patients were collected from the femoral vein during catheter ablation and all patients included were followed up after catheter ablation. Results: Plasma MPO levels increased from paroxysmal AF to persistent AF patients (56.31 [40.33-73.51] vs. 64.11 [48.65-81.11] ng/ml, p < 0.001). MPO significantly correlated with left atrium volume (LAV) and there existed a significant interaction between the two in relation to AF recurrence (p for interaction <0.05). During a median follow-up of 14 months, 28 patients with paroxysmal AF (12.44%) and 27 patients with persistent AF (25.47%) presented with recurrence after catheter ablation. The percentage of recurrence increased stepwise with increasing tertiles of MPO levels in both paroxysmal AF and persistent AF. MPO levels remained independently associated with AF recurrence after adjusting for potential confounding variables. Conclusion: MPO levels were higher in persistent AF than in paroxysmal AF and MPO was positively correlated with LAV in AF. Elevated MPO levels may predispose a switch in AF phenotype and AF recurrence after catheter ablation.

As the prevalence of self-harm among adolescents in Chinese escalates, finding out the potential risk factors associated with self-harm behaviors has aroused much attention. This study aims to explore the association between parent-child separation and series of self-harm (SH) subtypes among Chinese adolescents. We survey a total of 4,928 middle school students aged from 12 to 18 years at school. Parent-child separation was investigated from four dimensions-occurrence of parental separation, separation status, age at first separation and duration of separation. Self-harm series are deemed as five subtypes-highly lethal self-harm, less lethal self-harm with visible tissue damage, self-harm without visible tissue damage, self-harmful behaviors with latent damage and psychological self-harm. Multivariate logistic regression is used to explore the associations between parent-child separation and different subtypes of self-harm among adolescents. Paternal separation is associated with each type of self-harm whilst maternal separation is not correlated with highly lethal self-harm. Except for highly lethal self-harm, the other four subtypes of self-harm demonstrate a relation with both length of paternal separation and maternal separation with aOR ranging from 1.02 to 1.06. Individuals who suffer parental separation prior to the age of three were at a higher risk for four types of less-lethal self-harm. The association of parent-child separation with self-harm deserves our attention, and future research is needed to identify the underlying mechanisms.

Semiconductor III-V photonic crystal (PC) laser is regarded as a promising ultra-compact light source with unique advantages of ultralow energy consumption and small footprint for the next generation of Si-based on-chip optical interconnects. However, the significant material dissimilarities between III-V materials and Si are the fundamental roadblock for conventional monolithic III-V-on-silicon integration technology. Here, we demonstrate ultrasmall III-V PC membrane lasers monolithically grown on CMOS-compatible on-axis Si (001) substrates by using III-V quantum dots. The optically pumped InAs/GaAs quantum-dot PC lasers exhibit single-mode operation with an ultra-low threshold of ~0.6 µW and a large spontaneous emission coupling efficiency up to 18% under continuous-wave condition at room temperature. This work establishes a new route to form the basis of future monolithic light sources for high-density optical interconnects in future large-scale silicon electronic and photonic integrated circuits.

Recently, all-inorganic halide perovskite quantum dots have become a very promising material for light-emitting diodes. Herein, we demonstrate a facile method, namely, layer-by-layer spin-coating of CsPbBr3 QDs to improve device performance. After optimization of the number of emissive layers, the maximum EQE can be increased from an initial value of 0.69% to 2.31%. Additionally, we inserted a CBP layer between PEDOT:PSS and CsPbBr3 multilayers to balance charge transportation and recombination. As a result, a 37% improvement in EQE (up to 3.16%) and highest luminance of 2629 cd m-2 are obtained.
