RESUMO

To investigate the potential benefits of the catadromous thinlip grey mullet (Chelon ramada Risso, 1827) migration to freshwater, the total lipid content and fatty acid (FA) profile of female's muscle and gonads caught in both the estuary and river were analyzed. The freshwater contingent presented a higher body condition, greater muscle gross energy, and larger gonads with higher lipid reserves. These animals showed a muscle profile rich in C16:1n-7 and lower LC-PUFA that contrast with the higher relative amount of C18:1n-9, n-3 FA, and unsaturated LC-PUFA, such as C18 and C20 FA found in the estuarine contingent. The gonads of both contingents showed a constant and high relative amount of polyunsaturated FAs (PUFA, 37%). However, in terms of essential fatty acids (EFAs), the estuarine contingent had a higher relative amount of C18:2n-6, C20:4n-6, C20:5n-3, and C22:6n-3. On the other hand, the freshwater contingent showed a higher relative amount of n-3 FA precursors, namely C18:3n-3, and a still low relative amount of C22:6n-3. This suggests a mismatch between the metabolic omega-3 pathway and the physiological maturity stages, similar to a phenomenon of dormancy. In this sense, not all these individuals may reproduce annually, and the later stages of gonad development will require supplementary energy derived from feeding at the estuary. Thus, freshwater migration may promote a reproductive strategy enabling adults to take advantage of the warm and food-rich summer/autumn period, adjust spawning and juvenile appearance, and reduce the population's exposure to habitat changes and/or stochastic events.

RESUMO

Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) are a class of chemicals widely used as plasticizers. These compounds, considered toxic, do not bond to the polymeric matrix of plastic and can, therefore, migrate into the surrounding environment, posing a risk to human health. The primary source of human exposure is food, which can become contaminated during cultivation, production, and packaging. Therefore, it is imperative to control and regulate this exposure. This review covers the analytical methods used for their determination in two economically significant products: olive oil and wine. Additionally, it provides a summary and analysis of information regarding the characteristics, toxicity, effects on human health, and current regulations pertaining to PAEs in food. Various approaches for the extraction, purification, and quantification of these analytes are highlighted. Solvent and sorbent-based extraction techniques are reviewed, as are the chromatographic separation and other methods currently applied in the analysis of PAEs in wines and olive oils. The analysis of these contaminants is challenging due to the complexities of the matrices and the widespread presence of PAEs in analytical laboratories, demanding the implementation of appropriate strategies.

RESUMO

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Muscle hyperactivity that leads to neuromuscular fatigue can be evaluated by electromyography. Whether treatment with occlusal devices can restore neuromuscular balance to patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) is unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical study was to evaluate neuromuscular fatigue by analyzing the frequency of the electromyographic signal of the masseter and anterior temporalis muscles on both sides in healthy participants and those with TMD treated with a resilient or hard occlusal device. MATERIAL AND METHODS: One hundred asymptomatic participants and 30 with TMD were divided into 2 groups: treated with a hard device or treated with a resilient device. All underwent electromyographic examination before and after treatment with the occlusal devices. RESULTS: In both groups, the results showed statistically significant differences (P<.01) when the fatigue rate before and after treatment with an occlusal device was compared. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with both types of occlusal device was efficient in reducing the rate of neuromuscular fatigue in patients with TMDs.

RESUMO

Multidimensional gas chromatography is, presently, an established and powerful analytical tool, due to higher resolving power than the classical 1D chromatographic approaches. Applied to multiple areas, it allows to isolate, detect and identify a larger number of compounds present in complex matrices, even in trace amounts. Research was conducted to determine which compounds, emitted by host plants of the eucalyptus weevil, Gonipterus platensis, might mediate host selection behavior. The identification of a pheromone blend of G. platensis is presented, revealing to be more attractive to weevils of both sexes, than the individual compounds. The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were collected by headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME), MonoTrapTM disks, and simultaneous distillation-extraction (SDE). Combining one dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) chromatographic systems-comprehensive and heart-cut two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC and H/C-MD-GC, respectively) with mass spectrometry (MS) and electroantennographic (EAD) detection, enabled the selection and identification of pertinent semiochemicals which were detected by the insect antennal olfactory system. The behavioral effect of a selected blend of compounds was assessed in a two-arm olfactometer with ten parallel walking chambers, coupled to video tracking and data analysis software. An active blend, composed by cis and trans-verbenol, verbenene, myrtenol and trans-pinocarveol was achieved.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the interaction between a set of factors commonly associated with vitamin D production and nutritional intake and serum 25(OH)D levels among older adults. METHODS: Cross-sectional study on 346 adults over 60 years. Serum 25(OH)D levels were measured following routine biochemical laboratory protocols. Multivariable logistic regression investigated which factors were independently associated with vitamin D deficiency. RESULTS: The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency was 35.3% and 44.2%, respectively. The multivariable logistic regression showed gender and BMI as independent adjustment measures for serum 25(OH)D levels; all other associations were non-significant. CONCLUSIONS: Sex and BMI prevail as principal determinants of serum 25(OH)D levels among older adults. BMI seems to have a more pronounced influence on serum 25(OH)D levels of females compared to males. Healthcare professionals should consider active screening for changes in serum 25(OH)D levels in older obese adults, especially females.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Increasingly, dental education is using digital strategies to deliver teaching; however, not all of these learning materials are engaging and effective. AIM: To evaluate the perception and knowledge retention of undergraduate dental students after using two different digital learning tools: quizzes and PDF. METHODS: Thirty-three students from a Dental School in the United Kingdom took part in the research. They received learning material derived from the Prosthodontic (Kennedy classification) or Paediatric dentistry content (Tooth classification). The same content was delivered in two different formats: quiz game (n = 17) and PDF file (n = 16). The PDF file had ten images and their classifications, whilst the quiz had the same images with a question about the classification, along with alternatives (single best answer). RESULTS: All students gave similar performances on the knowledge assessment; however, their perception about the learning material differed. Students using quizzes (88%) agreed that they were fun and an interesting way of learning, while only 37.5% had this opinion about PDF material (p = .002). When using quizzes, learners were more motivated and confident. They would frequently recommend quizzes to other colleagues; however, the use of PDF was not suggested as frequently (p = .039). As a learning strategy, 100% of the students using quizzes wanted more of the same to study other dental subjects. This was not the case with the PDF format (p = .005). CONCLUSION: Despite quizzes and PDF files resulting in a similar understanding of dental subjects, learners prefer quizzes to supplement their studies. Educators should consider using this interactive digital tool to engage students, instead of PDF files.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Dental undergraduates will access the Internet searching for learning materials to complement their training; however, open access content is not generally recommended by dental schools. This study aimed to evaluate how dental students are using online video content. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Students from eight Universities (Athens, Birmingham, Brescia, Cardiff, Melbourne, Paris, Sao Paulo and Valdivia) representing three continents were invited to complete a survey on their access and learning from online videos. RESULTS: International students behave similarly when studying dental content online. Of 515 respondents, 94.6% use the Internet as a learning tool. It was observed that videos are not frequently recommended during didactic lectures (9.6%). But many students (79.9%) will use YouTube for their learning which includes clinical procedures. Students will check online content before performing procedures for the first time (74.8%), to understand what was explained in class (65.9%) or read in books (59.5%), to relearn clinical techniques (64.7%) and to visualise rare procedures (49.8%). More than half of the students do not fully trust the accuracy or the reliability of online content. This does not prevent students from watching and sharing dental videos with classmates (64.4%). The content watched is not shared with teachers (23.3%) even when it contradicts what was learnt in the school (38.2%). CONCLUSION: This study concludes that students regularly integrate open access digital resources into learning portfolios but are hesitant to inform their teachers about their viewing habits. Students wish to receive critical skills on how to evaluate the material they encounter outside their traditional learning space.

RESUMO

The Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) has the objective quality of transportation improvement through transportation system monitoring and management and makes the trip more comfortable and safer for drivers and passengers. The mobile clouds can assist the ITS in handling the resource management problem. However, resource allocation management in an ITS is challenging due to vehicular network characteristics, such as high mobility and dynamic topology. With that in mind, we propose the FORESAM, a mechanism for resources management and allocation based on a set of FOGs which control vehicular cloud resources in the urban environment. The mechanism is based on a more accurate mathematical model (Multiple Attribute Decision), which aims to assist the allocation decision of resources set that meets the period requested service. The simulation results have shown that the proposed solution allows a higher number of services, reducing the number of locks of services with its accuracy. Furthermore, its resource allocation is more balanced the provided a smaller amount of discarded services.

RESUMO

Protein haze in white wine is one of the most common non-microbial defects of commercial wines, with bentonite being the main solution utilized by the winemaking industry to tackle this problem. Bentonite presents some serious disadvantages, and several alternatives have been proposed. Here, an alternative based on a new cellulose derivative (dicarboxymethyl cellulose, DCMC) is proposed. To determine the efficiency of DCMC as a bentonite alternative, three monovarietal wines were characterized, and their protein instability and content determined by a heat stability test (HST) and the Bradford method, respectively. The wines were treated with DCMC to achieve stable wines, as shown by the HST, and the efficacy of the treatments was assessed by determining, before and after treatment, the wine content in protein, phenolic compounds, sodium, calcium, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as well as the wine pH. DCMC applied at dosages such as those commonly employed for bentonite was able to reduce the protein content in all tested wines and to stabilize all but the Moscatel de Setúbal varietal wine. In general, DCMC was shown to induce lower changes in the wine pH and phenolic content than bentonite, reducing the wine calcium content. Regarding which VOCs are concerned, DCMC produced a general impact similar to that of bentonite, with differences depending on wine variety. The results obtained suggest that DCMC can be a sustainable alternative to bentonite in protein white wine stabilization.

RESUMO

Methylammonium lead halide perovskite (CH3NH3PbI3) films, with high PbI2 concentration, were grown by the two-step spin coating method. The influence of the precursor concentration and annealing time on the optical and structural properties of the perovskite films was analyzed by optical absorption, photoluminescence, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that, in addition to the CH3NH3PbI3 and PbI2 phases, intermediate phases, such as (MA)2(DMF)2Pb3I8, were formed in the films, depending on the time and temperature of annealing, which can tune the optical absorption in the visible spectra. This intermediate phase induced the formation of perovskite nanowires, identified by SEM images, and their growth may be associated with the presence of the DMF solvent remaining in the PbI2 film.

RESUMO

Wire-mesh sensors are used to determine the phase fraction of gas⁻liquid two-phase flow in many industrial applications. In this paper, we report the use of the sensor to study the flow behavior inside an offshore oil and gas industry device for subsea phase separation. The study focused on the behavior of gas⁻liquid slug flow inside a flow distribution device with four outlets, which is part of the subsea phase separator system. The void fraction profile and the flow symmetry across the outlets were investigated using tomographic wire-mesh sensors and a camera. Results showed an ascendant liquid film in the cyclonic chamber with the gas phase at the center of the pipe generating a symmetrical flow. Dispersed bubbles coalesced into a gas vortex due to the centrifugal force inside the cyclonic chamber. The behavior favored the separation of smaller bubbles from the liquid bulk, which was an important parameter for gas-liquid separator sizing. The void fraction analysis of the outlets showed an even flow distribution with less than 10% difference, which was a satisfactorily result that may contribute to a reduction on the subsea gas⁻liquid separators size. From the outcomes of this study, detailed information regarding this type of flow distribution system was extracted. Thereby, wire-mesh sensors were successfully applied to investigate a new type of equipment for the offshore oil and gas industry.

RESUMO

A comprehensive characterization of muscle's FA composition of sea lamprey ammocoetes and adults was performed to test the hypothesis that larvae, and early spawning migrants have a similar FA profile prior to metamorphosis and to spawning migration. Subsequently, the role played by FA signature in these two highly demanding stages of life cycle was inferred. The results confirm that muscle represents an important fat reservoir, and the FA trophic markers revealed the importance of bacteria as sources of iso and anteiso FA and the strong trophic representation of benthic phytoplankton (diatoms) to larvae muscle FA profile. In early spawning migrants, the significance of marine food web to FA muscle profile is highlighted by the presence of FA signatures characteristics of herbivorous calanoid copepods. Although both life cycle phases studied do not share the same muscle FA signature, there is a part of the profile that is common, which is characterized by FA used in ß-oxidation, such as C18:1ω9 but also by medium chain FA and PUFA which points that PUFA are spared as fuel to ß-oxidation process and probably used to the development of tissues membranes (ammocoetes) and gonadal development and eicosanoid production among others (early spawning migrants). Further studies on FA profile are necessary to elucidate the FA role either during different life stages (ontogeny) or in the distinct habitats frequented (freshwater versus marine) by this diadromous species.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The Internet has become an established learning tool in dental education where students can access online videos on a range of dental subjects. However, finding reliable peer-reviewed content is not straightforward. AIM: To evaluate the video content offered by UK and Republic of Ireland (RoI) Dental Schools on their YouTube channels and public websites. METHODS: Free videos offered on UK and RoI Dental schools websites and YouTube channels were watched and set according to its purpose, as educational or non-educational. The number of views, length, category and date of publication were analysed. RESULTS: A total of 627 videos offered by dental courses were evaluated. Videos were available on 83% of the websites, but only 9% was educational content. Dental courses YouTube channels received more than 2.3 million views, but less than 5% of the material offered is educational. Instructional videos found on the websites (3.2 min) were shorter than those found on YouTube (8.5 min) (P = .03). The majority of the videos, provided by Universities, were not educational and focused on promoting the dental courses. Most websites have demonstrated a password-protected area where quality content may be offered. CONCLUSION: Students wishing to watch instructional videos will find limited educational content provided by UK and RoI dental courses. Therefore, they are likely to access course-related material elsewhere on the Internet that may not be necessarily peer-reviewed.

RESUMO

Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for several organisms and is mostly present in proteins as L-selenocysteine (Sec or U). Sec is synthesized on its L-seryl-tRNASec to produce Sec-tRNASec molecules by a dedicated selenocysteine synthesis machinery and incorporated into selenoproteins at specified in-frame UGA codons. UGA-Sec insertion is signaled by an mRNA stem-loop structure called the SElenoCysteine Insertion Sequence (SECIS). tRNASec transcription regulation and folding have been described showing its importance to Sec biosynthesis. Here, we discuss structural aspects of Sec-tRNASec and its role in Sec biosynthesis as well as Sec incorporation into selenoproteins. Defects in the Sec biosynthesis or incorporation pathway have been correlated with pathological conditions.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to examine the hypothesis that users of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) would have cardiac autonomic disorders and that there is a correlation between sympathetic modulation, high blood pressure (BP) and alterations to cardiac dimensions. METHODS: Forty-five male subjects were enrolled in the study. They were categorized into three groups comprising bodybuilders actively using AAS (AAS users; n = 15), bodybuilders who had never used AAS (nonusers; n = 15) and age-paired healthy sedentary controls (n = 15). Hemodynamic parameters, linear and nonlinear analyses of heart rate variability and electrocardiography and echocardiography analyses were performed at rest. RESULTS: Bodybuilders in the AAS group had a higher mean BP than those in the ASS nonuser group (p < 0.05) and the sedentary controls (p < 0.001). Cardiac sympathetic modulation was higher in AAS users than in AAS nonusers (p < 0.05) and the sedentary controls (p < 0.001), and parasympathetic modulation was lower in AAS users than in nonusers and the sedentary controls (p < 0.05). Shannon entropy was lower in AAS users than in the sedentary (p < 0.05) controls, and the corrected QT interval and QT dispersion were higher in AAS users than in the sedentary controls (p < 0.05). The interventricular septal thickness, left ventricle posterior wall thickness and relative diastolic wall thickness were higher in AAS users than in AAS nonusers and the sedentary controls (p < 0.001). AAS users showed a positive correlation between increased sympathetic modulation and high BP (r = 0.48, p < 0.005), as well as sympathetic modulation and cardiac hypertrophy (r = 0.66, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: There was a marked cardiac autonomic alteration in AAS users, with a shift toward sympathetic modulation predominance and vagal attenuation. The high BP observed in our group of bodybuilders using AAS was associated with increased sympathetic modulation, and this increased sympathetic modulation was associated with structural alterations in the heart. This association may constitute an important mechanism linking AAS abuse to increased cardiovascular risk.

RESUMO

Naegleria fowleri is a pathogenic amoeboflagellate most prominently known for its role as the etiological agent of the Primary Amoebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM), a disease that afflicts the central nervous system and is fatal in more than 95% of the reported cases. Although being fatal and with potential risks for an increase in the occurrence of the pathogen in populated areas, the organism receives little public health attention. A great underestimation in the number of PAM cases reported is assumed, taking into account the difficulty in obtaining an accurate diagnosis. In this review, we summarize different techniques and methods used in the identification of the protozoan in clinical and environmental samples. Since it remains unclear whether the protozoan infection can be successfully treated with the currently available drugs, we proceed to discuss the current PAM therapeutic strategies and its effectiveness. Finally, novel compounds for potential treatments are discussed as well as research on vaccine development against PAM.

RESUMO

In this article we respond to the comments made by Chavanne et al., who have questioned: (i) the name of the technique used; (ii) the ability of the system to determine both soil water content and salinity due to potential instrument biases and choice of sensor frequencies; and (iii) the procedure used to determine temperature effect on readings presented in the article "A Novel Low-Cost Instrumentation System for Measuring the Water Content and Apparent Electrical Conductivity of Soils" (Sensors 2015, 15, 25546⁻25563). We have carefully analyzed the arguments in the comment, and have concluded that they only partially affect the previous conclusions, as will be discussed in this reply. We show here that the findings and conclusions previously drawn are valid and supported by the many experiments previously conducted.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In this paper, various extra-virgin and virgin olive oils samples from different Portuguese markets were studied. For this purpose, a voltammetric electronic tongue (VE-tongue), consisting of two kinds of working electrode within the array, together with physicochemical analysis and headspace gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (HS-GC-MS), were applied. In addition, preliminary considerations of relationships between physicochemical parameters and multisensory system were reported. RESULTS: The physicochemical parameters exhibit significant differences among the analyzed olive oil samples that define its qualities. Regarding the aroma profile, 14 volatile compounds were characterized using HS-GC-MS; among these, hex-2-enal, hexanal, acetic acid, hex-3-ene-1-ol acetate and hex-3-en-1-ol were semi-quantitatively detected as the main aroma compounds in the analyzed samples. Moreover, pattern recognition methods demonstrate the discrimination power of the proposed VE-tongue system. The results reveal the VE-tongue's ability to classify olive oil samples and to identify unknown samples based of built models. In addition, the correlation between VE-tongue and physicochemical analysis exhibits a remarkable prediction model aimed at anticipating carotenoid content. CONCLUSION: The preliminary results of this investigation indicate that physicochemical and HS-GC-MS analysis, together with multisensory system coupled with chemometric techniques, presented a satisfactory performance regarding olive oil sample discrimination and identification. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Robot-Assisted Single Site Radical Nephrectomy (RASS-RN) has been reported by surgeons in Europe and United States (1-3). To our best knowledge this video presents the first RASS-RN with concomitant cholecystectomy performed in Latin America. CASE: A 66 year-old renal transplant male due to chronic renal failure presented with an incidental 1.3cm nodule in the upper pole of the right kidney. In addition, symptomatic gallbladder stones were detected. RESULTS: Patient was placed in modified flank position. Multichannel single port device was placed using Hassan's technique through a 3cm supra-umbilical incision. Standard radical nephrectomy and cholecystectomy were made using na 8.5mm camera, two 5mm robotic arms and an assistant 5mm access. Surgery time and estimated blood loss were 208 minutes and 100mL, respectively. Patient did well and was discharged within less than 48 hours, without complications. Pathology report showed benign renomedullary tumor of interstitial cells and chronic cholecystitis. DISCUSSION: Robotic technology improves ergonomics, gives better precision and enhances ability to approach complex surgeries. Robot-assisted Single Port aims to reduce the morbidity of multiple trocar placements while maintaining the advantages of robotic surgery (2). Limitations include the use of semi-rigid instruments providing less degree of motion and limited space leading to crash between instruments. On the other hand, it is possible to perform complex and concomitant surgeries with just one incision. CONCLUSION: RASS-RN seems to be safe and feasible option for selected cases. Studies should be performed to better understand the results using single port technique in Urology.

RESUMO

The amorphization of the readily crystallizable therapeutic ingredient and food additive, menthol, was successfully achieved by inclusion of neat menthol in mesoporous silica matrixes of 3.2 and 5.9 nm size pores. Menthol amorphization was confirmed by the calorimetric detection of a glass transition. The respective glass transition temperature, Tg = -54.3 °C, is in good agreement with the one predicted by the composition dependence of the Tg values determined for menthol:flurbiprofen therapeutic deep eutectic solvents (THEDESs). Nonisothermal crystallization was never observed for neat menthol loaded into silica hosts, which can indicate that menthol rests as a full amorphous/supercooled material inside the pores of the silica matrixes. Menthol mobility was probed by dielectric relaxation spectroscopy, which allowed to identify two relaxation processes in both pore sizes: a faster one associated with mobility of neat-like menthol molecules (α-process), and a slower, dominant one due to the hindered mobility of menthol molecules adsorbed at the inner pore walls (S-process). The fraction of molecular population governing the α-process is greater in the higher (5.9 nm) pore size matrix, although in both cases the S-process is more intense than the α-process. A dielectric glass transition temperature was estimated for each α (Tg,dielc(α)) and S (Tg,dielc(S)) molecular population from the temperature dependence of the relaxation times to 100 s. While Tg,dielc(α) agrees better with the value obtained from the linearization of the Fox equation assuming ideal behavior of the menthol:flurbiprofen THEDES, Tg,dielc(S) is close to the value determined by calorimetry for the silica composites due to a dominance of the adsorbed population inside the pores. Nevertheless, the greater fraction of more mobile bulk-like molecules in the 5.9 nm pore size matrix seems to determine the faster drug release at initial times relative to the 3.2 nm composite. However, the latter inhibits crystallization inside pores since its dimensions are inferior to menthol critical size for nucleation. This points to a suitability of these composites as drug delivery systems in which the drug release profile can be controlled by tuning the host pore size.
