RESUMO

The dinosaur-bird transition involved several anatomical, biomechanical, and physiological modifications of the theropod bauplan. Non-avian maniraptoran theropods, such as Troodon, are key to better understand changes in thermophysiology and reproduction occurring during this transition. Here, we applied dual clumped isotope (Δ47 and Δ48) thermometry, a technique that resolves mineralization temperature and other nonthermal information recorded in carbonates, to eggshells from Troodon, modern reptiles, and modern birds. Troodon eggshells show variable temperatures, namely 42 and 29 ± 2 °C, supporting the hypothesis of an endothermic thermophysiology with a heterothermic strategy for this extinct taxon. Dual clumped isotope data also reveal physiological differences in the reproductive systems between Troodon, reptiles, and birds. Troodon and modern reptiles mineralize their eggshells indistinguishable from dual clumped isotope equilibrium, while birds precipitate eggshells characterized by a positive disequilibrium offset in Δ48. Analyses of inorganic calcites suggest that the observed disequilibrium pattern in birds is linked to an amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) precursor, a carbonate phase known to accelerate eggshell formation in birds. Lack of disequilibrium patterns in reptile and Troodon eggshells implies these vertebrates had not acquired the fast, ACC-based eggshell calcification process characteristic of birds. Observation that Troodon retained a slow reptile-like calcification suggests that it possessed two functional ovaries and was limited in the number of eggs it could produce; thus its large clutches would have been laid by several females. Dual clumped isotope analysis of eggshells of extinct vertebrates sheds light on physiological information otherwise inaccessible in the fossil record.

The realization that ancient biomolecules are preserved in "fossil" samples has revolutionized archaeological science. Protein sequences survive longer than DNA, but their phylogenetic resolution is inferior; therefore, careful assessment of the research questions is required. Here, we show the potential of ancient proteins preserved in Pleistocene eggshell in addressing a longstanding controversy in human and animal evolution: the identity of the extinct bird that laid large eggs which were exploited by Australia's indigenous people. The eggs had been originally attributed to the iconic extinct flightless bird Genyornis newtoni (†Dromornithidae, Galloanseres) and were subsequently dated to before 50 ± 5 ka by Miller et al. [Nat. Commun. 7, 10496 (2016)]. This was taken to represent the likely extinction date for this endemic megafaunal species and thus implied a role of humans in its demise. A contrasting hypothesis, according to which the eggs were laid by a large mound-builder megapode (Megapodiidae, Galliformes), would therefore acquit humans of their responsibility in the extinction of Genyornis. Ancient protein sequences were reconstructed and used to assess the evolutionary proximity of the undetermined eggshell to extant birds, rejecting the megapode hypothesis. Authentic ancient DNA could not be confirmed from these highly degraded samples, but morphometric data also support the attribution of the eggshell to Genyornis. When used in triangulation to address well-defined hypotheses, paleoproteomics is a powerful tool for reconstructing the evolutionary history in ancient samples. In addition to the clarification of phylogenetic placement, these data provide a more nuanced understanding of the modes of interactions between humans and their environment.

BACKGROUND: Natural bone grafts are the highly preferred materials for restoring the lost bone, while being constrained of donor availability and risk of disease transmission. As a result, tissue engineering is emerging as an efficacious and competitive technique for bone repair. Bone tissue engineering (TE) scaffolds to support bone regeneration and devoid of aforesaid limitations are being vastly explored and among these the avian eggshell membrane has drawn attention for TE owing to its low immunogenicity, similarity with the extracellular matrix, and easy availability. METHODOLOGY AND RESULTS: In this study, the development of bone ingrowth support system from avian eggshell membrane derived collagen hydrolysates (Col-h) is reported. The hydrolysate, cross-linked with glutaraldehyde, was developed into hydrogels with poly-(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) by freeze-thawing and further characterized with ATR-FTIR, XRD, FESEM. The biodegradability, swelling, mechanical, anti-microbial, and biocompatibility evaluation were performed further for the suitability in bone regeneration. The presence of amide I, amide III, and -OH functional groups at 1639 cm- 1,1264 cm- 1, and 3308 cm- 1 respectively and broad peak between 16°-21° (2θ) in XRD data reinstated the composition and form. CONCLUSIONS: The maximum ratio of Col-h/PVA that produced well defined hydrogels was 50:50. Though all the hydrogel matrices alluded towards their competitive attributes and applicability towards restorative bone repair, the hydrogel with 40:60 ratios showed better mechanical strength and cell proliferation than its counterparts. The prominent E. coli growth inhibition by the hydrogel matrices was also observed, along with excellent biocompatibility with MG-63 osteoblasts. The findings indicate strongly the promising application of avian eggshell-derived Col-h in supporting bone regeneration.

Egg washing guidelines vary across countries; however, since 2020, Korea has required that all eggs produced from farms with more than 10,000 laying hens must be washed through egg grading and packing (GP) plant. This study investigated the prevalence and characterization of non-typhoidal Salmonella in eggs after washing at GP plants. In total, 16,800 eggs were collected from 60 egg GP plants located inside commercial layer farms, and 840 pooled eggshell and egg contents were tested for Salmonella, respectively. Of the 60 GP plants tested, 11 (18.3%) and 12 (20.0%) plants were positive for Salmonella spp. In the eggshells and egg contents, respectively. In particular, High Salmonella prevalence in the eggshells and egg contents occurred most often in farms with laying hens older than 80 weeks (33.3% and 40.0%, respectively). However, among 840 pooled eggshells and egg content samples, only 19 (2.3%) of each sample type were positive only for non-typhoidal Salmonella spp. The most common Salmonella serovar in both eggshells and egg contents was S. Infantis, which was found in five (8.3%) of 60 GP plants for both samples types. The other Salmonella serovars detected in eggshells were S. Bareilly (5.0%), S. Agona (3.3%), S. Enteritidis (1.7%), and S. Montevideo (1.7%), whereas those detected in egg contents were S. Enteritidis (5.0%), S. Agona (3.3%), S. Newport (3.3%), S. Senftenberg (3.3%), and S. Derby (1.7%). Of the 19 virulence genes tested, 14 genes were detected in all Salmonella. Interestingly, the spvB gene was detected only in S. Enteritidis, and the sefC gene was detected only in S. Enteritidis and S. Senftenberg. Moreover, all S. Infantis isolates showed multidrug resistance (MDR) against five or more classes, and the other serovars only showed MDR against three to four classes or no MDR. These results suggest that comprehensive surveillance and advanced management approaches for egg GP plants are required to minimize egg contamination with non-typhoidal Salmonella.

BACKGROUND: Up to 40% of the world population live in areas where mosquitoes capable of transmitting the dengue virus, including Aedes aegypti, coexist with humans. Understanding how mosquito egg development and oviposition are regulated at the molecular level may provide new insights into novel mosquito control strategies. Previously, we identified a protein named eggshell organizing factor 1 (EOF1) that when knocked down with RNA interference (RNAi) resulted in non-melanized and fragile eggs that did not contain viable embryos. RESULTS: In this current study, we performed a comprehensive RNAi screen of putative A. aegypti eggshell proteins to identify additional proteins that interact with intracellular EOF1. We identified several proteins essential for eggshell formation in A. aegypti and characterized their phenotypes through a combination of molecular and biochemical approaches. We found that Nasrat, Closca, and Polehole structural proteins, together with the Nudel serine protease, are indispensable for eggshell melanization and egg viability. While all four proteins are predominantly expressed in ovaries of adult females, Nudel messenger RNA (mRNA) expression is highly upregulated in response to blood feeding. Furthermore, we identified four additional secreted eggshell enzymes that regulated mosquito eggshell formation and melanization. These enzymes included three dopachrome-converting enzymes (DCEs) and one cysteine protease. All eight of these eggshell proteins were essential for proper eggshell formation. Interestingly, their eggshell surface topologies in response to RNAi did not phenocopy the effect of RNAi-EOF1, suggesting that additional mechanisms may influence how EOF1 regulates eggshell formation and melanization. CONCLUSIONS: While our studies did not identify a definitive regulator of EOF1, we did identify eight additional proteins involved in mosquito eggshell formation that may be leveraged for future control strategies.

During choriogenesis in insects, chorion (eggshell) is formed by surrounding follicular epithelial cells in ovarioles. However, the regulatory endocrine factor(s) activating choriogenesis and the effect of chemical components on eggshell deserve further exploration. In two representative coleopterans, a coccinellid Henosepilachna vigintioctopunctata and a chrysomelid Leptinotarsa decemlineata, genes encoding the 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) receptor heterodimer, ecdysone receptor (EcR) and ultraspiracle (USP), and two chitin biosynthesis enzymes UDP-N-acetylglucosamine pyrophosphorylase (UAP) and chitin synthase (ChS1), were highly expressed in ovaries of the young females. RNA interference (RNAi)-aided knockdown of either HvEcR or Hvusp in H. vigintioctopunctata inhibited oviposition, suppressed the expression of HvChS1, and lessened the positive signal of Calcofluor staining on the chorions, which suggests the reduction of a chitin-like substance (CLS) deposited on eggshells. Similarly, RNAi of LdEcR or Ldusp in L. decemlineata constrained oviposition, decreased the expression of LdUAP1 and LdChS1, and reduced CLS contents in the resultant ovaries. Knockdown of LdUAP1 or LdChS1 caused similar defective phenotypes, i.e., reduced oviposition and CLS contents in the L. decemlineata ovaries. These results, for the first time, indicate that 20E signaling activates choriogenesis in two coleopteran species. Moreover, our findings suggest the deposition of a CLS on the chorions.

Capturing CO2 using clamshell/eggshell-derived CaO adsorbent can not only reduce carbon emissions but also alleviate the impact of trash on the environment. However, organic acid was usually used, high-temperature calcination was often performed, and CO2 was inevitably released during preparing CaO adsorbents from shell wastes. In this work, CaO-based CO2 adsorbent was greenly prepared by calcium-induced hydrogenation of clamshell and eggshell wastes in one pot at room/moderate temperature. CO2 adsorption experiments were performed in a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The adsorption performance of the adsorbents obtained from the mechanochemical reaction (BM-C/E-CaO) was superior to that of the adsorbents obtained from the thermochemical reaction (Cal-C/E-CaO). The CO2 adsorption capacity of BM-C-CaO at 650 °C is up to 36.82 wt%, but the adsorption decay rate of the sample after 20 carbonation/calcination cycles is only 30.17%. This study offers an alternative energy-saving method for greenly preparing CaO-based adsorbent from shell wastes.

Phosphorus (P) removal from urban wastewater is increasingly relevant in the wastewater treatment sector. The present work aims to contribute to the study of the adsorption process as a P removal technology. Biogenic calcium carbonate from industrial eggshell waste prepared by milling and calcination was used as an adsorbent. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted using real wastewater with 40 mg P/L (orthophosphate), original pH 7.33, under stirring conditions (100 rpm). The adsorbent was characterized using SEM-EDS, XRD, and FTIR-ATR before and after adsorption. From an initial screening of calcination times (15, 30, 60, and 120 min) and considering a balance between P removal and energy saving, the adsorbent selected was eggshell calcined at 700 °C for 60 min. The Langmuir isotherms describe the experimental data with a maximum adsorption capacity of 4.57 mg P/g at 25 °C. The adsorption process reached equilibrium within 120 min for different dosages (5, 10, and 20 g/L at 25 °C). Batch experiments showed that SO42-, at a concentration of 2689 mg/L reduced the P adsorption selectivity for dosages ≤10 g/L at 25 °C. Characterization of the loaded adsorbent shows that P adsorption from real wastewater is mostly electrostatic attraction, with the contribution of ligand exchange and microprecipitation. The adsorption capacity and behavior of the selected adsorbent seem promising for P removal from urban wastewater compared with other low-cost adsorbents.

Co-pyrolysis of orange peel and chicken eggshell was performed for the synthesis of the composite, a co-pyrolysis technique used to promote natural fabrication and to allow the raw material elemental combination effect and the preparatory conditions such as pyrolysis temperature, residence time, and eggshell/orange peel mixing ratio, to be optimized with the response surface methodology through Box-Behnken Design(BBD). BBD involved a randomized series of 17 experimental runs, and the best optimal conditions were found with a pyrolysis temperature of 300 °C, a residence time of 1 h, and 0.5 as the mixing ratio. These conditions gave a maximum adsorption capacity of 167 mg/g for removal of the modal pollutant methylene blue. FTIR spectra of the composite showed new functional peaks of oxygenated groups, at two different bands. XRD confirmed an amorphous surface with inorganic component peaks, while SEM-EDS revealed rich defects sites along with an enhanced percentage of oxygen elements on the surface; the surface area was enhanced from 1 m2 with unmodified peel to 64 m2 with composite. The adsorption behavior of the composite was studied for dye removal and the adsorption behavior was well explained by the Langmuir isotherm model.

Egg weight loss during incubation is a key indicator used to monitor successful egg development and is closely related to hatchability and chick survival. Artificial incubation is one of the most important captive breeding techniques used in conservation efforts to bolster avian populations. To repair damage to the eggshell and ensure embryonic viability during incubation, a variety of repair coverings can be applied. This study tested the impact of four repair materials (nail polish, synthetic glue, medical dressing, and molten wax film) on egg weight loss during incubation. We found no impact on weight loss for coverings smaller than 35% of the eggshell surface, nor did we find any differences between covering types. The average egg weight loss decreased as the coverage area increased, and the weight loss did not differ when blunt versus sharp-end coverings were compared. Given the relative insensitivity of egg weight loss and survival to the type of patch material used, we concluded that the selection of material for the purpose of weight loss management could be based on practical considerations, such as ease of application and availability.

The avian eggshell is formed in the uterus. Changes in uterine function may have a significant effect on eggshell quality. To identify the vital genes impacting uterine functional maintenance in the chicken, uteri in three different periods (22W, 31W, 51W) were selected for RNA sequencing and bioinformatics analysis. In our study, 520, 706 and 736 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were respectively detected in the W31 vs W22 group, W51 vs W31 group and W51 vs W22 group. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis indicated DEGs were enriched in the extracellular matrix, extracellular region part, extracellular region, extracellular matrix structural constituent, ECM receptor interaction, collagen-containing extracellular matrix and collagen trimer in the uterus (P < 0.05). Protein-protein interaction analysis revealed that FN1, LOX, THBS2, COL1A1, COL1A2, COL5A1, COL5A2, POSTN, MMP13, VANGL2, RAD54B, SPP1, SDC1, BTC, ANGPTL3 might be key candidate genes for uterine functional maintenance in chicken. This study discovered dominant genes and pathways which enhanced our knowledge of chicken uterine functional maintenance.

BACKGROUND: Eggshell speckle phenotype is an important trait in poultry production because they affect eggshell quality. However, the genetic architecture of speckled eggshells remains unclear. In this study, we determined the heritability of eggshell speckles and conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) on purebred Rhode Island Red (RIR) hens at 28 weeks to detect potential genomic loci and candidate genes associated with eggshell speckles. RESULTS: The heritability of eggshell speckles was 0.35 at 28 weeks, and the speckle level is not related to other eggshell quality traits in terms of phenotypic correlation. We detected 311 SNPs (6 significantly, and 305 suggestively associated) and 39 candidate genes associated with eggshell speckles. Based on the pathway analysis, the 39 candidate genes were mainly involved in alpha-linolenic acid metabolism, linoleic acid metabolism, ether lipid metabolism, GnRH signaling pathway, vascular smooth muscle contraction, and MAPK signaling pathway. Ultimately, ten genes, LOC423226, SPTBN5, EHD4, LOC77155, TYRO3, ITPKA, DLL4, PLA2G4B, PLA2G4EL5, and PLA2G4EL6 were considered the most promising genes associated with eggshell speckles that were implicated in immunoregulation, calcium transport, and phospholipid metabolism, while its function in laying hens requires further studies. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides new insights into understanding the genetic basis of eggshell speckles and has practical application value for the genetic improvement of eggshell quality.

Gelatin methacrylate-based hydrogels (GelMA) were widely used in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. However, to manipulate their various chemical and physical properties and create high-efficiency hydrogels, different materials have been used in their structure. Eggshell membrane (ESM) and propolis are two nature-derived materials that could be used to improve the various characteristics of hydrogels, especially structural and biological properties. Hence, the main purpose of this study is the development of a new type of GelMA hydrogel containing ESM and propolis, for use in regenerative medicine. In this regard, in this study, after synthesizing GelMA, the fragmented ESM fibers were added to it and the GM/EMF hydrogel was made using a photoinitiator and visible light irradiation. Finally, GM/EMF/P hydrogels were prepared by incubating GM/EMF hydrogels in the propolis solution for 24 h. After various structural, chemical, and biological characterizations, it was found that the hydrogels obtained in this study offer improved morphological, hydrophilic, thermal, mechanical, and biological properties. The developed GM/EMF/P hydrogel presented more porosity with smaller and interconnected pores compared to the other hydrogels. GM/EMF hydrogels due to possessing EMF showed compressive strength up to 25.95 ± 1.69 KPa, which is more than the compressive strength provided by GM hydrogels (24.550 ± 4.3 KPa). Also, GM/EMF/P hydrogel offered the best compressive strength (44.65 ± 3.48) due to the presence of both EMF and propolis. GM scaffold with a contact angle of about 65.41 ± 2.199 θ showed more hydrophobicity compared to GM/EMF (28.67 ± 1.58 θ), and GM/EMF/P (26.24 ± 0.73 θ) hydrogels. Also, the higher swelling percentage of GM/EMF/P hydrogels (343.197 ± 42.79) indicated the high capacity of this hydrogel to retain more water than other scaffolds. Regarding the biocompatibility of the fabricated structures, MTT assay results showed that GM/EMF/P hydrogel significantly (p-value < 0.05) supported cell viability. Based on the results, it seems that GM/EMF/P hydrogel could be a promising biomaterial candidate for use in various fields of regenerative medicine.

Seipin, an evolutionary conserved protein, plays pivotal roles during lipid droplet (LD) biogenesis and is associated with various human diseases with unclear mechanisms. Here, we analyzed Caenorhabditis elegans mutants deleted of the sole SEIPIN gene, seip-1 Homozygous seip-1 mutants displayed penetrant embryonic lethality, which is caused by the disruption of the lipid-rich permeability barrier, the innermost layer of the C. elegans embryonic eggshell. In C. elegans oocytes and embryos, SEIP-1 is associated with LDs and is crucial for controlling LD size and lipid homeostasis. The seip-1 deletion mutants reduced the ratio of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in their embryonic fatty acid pool. Interestingly, dietary supplementation of selected n-6 PUFAs rescued the embryonic lethality and defective permeability barrier. Accordingly, we propose that SEIP-1 may maternally regulate LD biogenesis and lipid homeostasis to orchestrate the formation of the permeability barrier for eggshell synthesis during embryogenesis. A lipodystrophy allele of seip-1 resulted in embryonic lethality as well and could be rescued by PUFA supplementation. These experiments support a great potential for using C. elegans to model SEIPIN-associated human diseases.

Elastin is an important extracellular matrix protein that contributes to the elasticity of cells, tissues, and organs. Although crosslinking amino acids such as desmosine and isodesmosine have been identified in elastin, details regarding the structure remain unclear. In this study, an elastin crosslinker, lysinonorleucine, was chemically synthesized and detected in hydrolyzed bovine ligament and eggshell membrane samples utilizing tandem mass spectrometry. Merodesmosine, another crosslinker of elastin, was also measured in the same samples using the same analytical method. The resulting data should aid in the elucidating the crosslinking structure of elastin and eggshell membranes.

It is a common occurrence for incubating female ground- or cavity-nesting birds to accidentally roll their own eggs out of the nest cup. To correctly roll eggs that are not in the nest cup back to the nest, birds must be able to discriminate between their eggs and things around their nests that could be easily confused for their eggs (e.g., egg-shaped stones or other birds' eggs). Moreover, there may be a strong interaction between egg retrieval and egg rejection behaviors in the context of avian brood parasitism where recognition and rejection of alien eggs is an effective means for hosts to defend against cuckoo parasitism. It has been shown that green-backed tits (Parus monticolus) and Japanese tits (P. minor) in China have strong egg recognition ability and are able to reject nonmimetic eggs in the nest. Eggshell spots play an essential role in the egg rejection behavior of these two tit hosts. This study investigated the egg retrieval behavior of green-backed tits and Japanese tits by adding one experimental egg to the nest corner to explore whether eggshell spots also play a role in the process of egg retrieval. The results revealed significant differences in the retrieval rates of white-rumped munia (Lonchura striata) eggs painted with spots, Japanese tits' own true eggs, and unpainted, pure white-white-rumped munia eggs. The retrieval rate of white-white-rumped munia eggs was significantly lower than that of spotted white-rumped munia eggs and Japanese tits' own spotted eggs. For green-backed tits, the retrieval rate of spotted white-rumped munia eggs in the nest corner was significantly higher than that of pure white-white-rumped munia eggs, while the rejection rate of spotted white-rumped munia eggs was significantly lower than that of pure white-white-rumped munia eggs. These findings indicate that eggshell spots play a key role in the egg retrieval of green-backed tits and Japanese tits.

Eggshell bacterial communities may affect hatching success and nestling's condition. Nest materials are in direct contact with the eggshells, but the relationships with the eggshell microbiome during incubation have not been fully elucidated. Here, we characterize eggshell and nest material bacterial communities and their changes during incubation in the Oriental Tit (Parus minor). Bacterial communities on the nest material were relatively stable and remained distinct from the eggshell communities and had higher diversity and greater phylogenetic clustering than the eggshell communities from the same nest, resulting in lower phylogenetic turnover rate of nest material microbiome during incubation than expected by chance. While the species diversity of both communities did not change during incubation, we found significantly greater changes in the structure of bacterial communities on the eggshell than on the nest material. However, eggshell microbiome remained distinct from nest material microbiome, suggesting independent dynamics of the two microbiomes during incubation. We detected an increase in the relative abundance of several bacterial taxa on the eggshell that likely come from the bird's skin, feathers, cloaca/intestine, or uropygial secretion which suggests some exchange of bacteria between the incubating bird and the eggshell. Furthermore, incubation appeared to promote the abundance of antibiotic producing taxa on the eggshell, which may hypothetically inhibit growth of many bacteria including pathogenic ones. Our results suggest that the future studies should focus on simultaneous monitoring of absolute abundance as well as relative abundance in communities on eggshells, nest materials, and the incubating bird's body.

In oviparous animals, egg morphology is considered an aspect of the extended phenotype of the laying mother and, thus, can be directly assessed for consistency both within and between individual females. Despite a recently renewed interest in the evolution and mechanics of avian eggshell morphology, we still lack a large-scale, comparative understanding of which egg traits are individually plastic and whether individual consistency is shaped by ecological and life history traits at the species level. Here, we aimed to understand whether intraclutch repeatability per se of different eggshell metrics is an evolving trait that responds to selection pressures from socio-ecological contexts across a diverse group of avian species for which clutch-level eggshell morphology data were available to us. Coloniality, ontogeny, and incubation period had significant impacts on the comparative patterns of relative individual repeatability among two egg metrics (i.e., size and shape), whereas other life history traits (including adult size, clutch size, nest type, migration, breeding latitude, host status of brood parasitism) did not have statistical impacts. Our results also demonstrate that individual consistency has a more widespread phylogenetic distribution than expected by evolutionary contingency across avian diversity. Future analyses should also incorporate the effects of intra- and interspecific covariation in other morphological and physiological traits on the evolution of individual consistency, especially those relevant to egg recognition, including eggshell color and maculation.

Phosphate recovery from wastewater using readily available biowaste-based adsorbents is beneficial for both eutrophication control and waste management. Bamboo char has a high-density porous structure and eggshell contains CaCO3 with high affinity for phosphate. The combination of calcined bamboo and eggshell is a potential adsorbent for P recovery that has not been tested previously. Because bamboo char and eggshell both are popular for soil amendment, a P-loaded bamboo and eggshell composite is a promising fertilizer for long-term soil improvement. In this work, the feasibility of calcined bamboo and eggshell (BE) for P recovery and its use as fertilizer were investigated. The adsorption capacity and mechanism were examined using adsorption kinetic, isotherm, and thermodynamic analysis. The kinetic study showed that the experimental data sets were fitted best by a pseudo second-order model, indicating chemisorption. The Langmuir isotherm model estimated maximum adsorption capacities of 95.14 and 98.40 mg/g for BE 1:1 and 2:1 adsorbent. Monolayer adsorption occurred on a homogenous surface. The adsorption reaction was non-spontaneous at 298 K and exothermic for the BE 1:1 and 2:1 adsorbent, and the calculated Langmuir separation factor indicated favorable conditions for P adsorption. The desorption study showed lower P desorption capacity in water than in neutral ammonium citrate. P-loaded eggshell-modified bamboo char was an effective slow-release fertilizer for Japanese mustard spinach cultivation, which is a sustainable and environment friendly use of P-loaded materials.

BACKGROUND: Toward the late phase of laying, the production performance of laying hens decreases, egg quality deteriorates, lipid metabolism weakens, and hepatic lipid accumulation is exacerbated. Probiotics as an alternative to antimicrobials have been employed in poultry-related industries. Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) is currently the most researched and clinically validated probiotic, showing promising effects in multiple application areas. However, few studies have been conducted on livestock (including poultry) production. RESULTS: Compared with the CON group, the feed conversion ratio (P < 0.01) declined significantly in the LGG group. Eggshell strength (P < 0.001) and eggshell thickness (P < 0.001) were significantly increased by supplementation with LGG in the diet. The height (P < 0.001) and proportion (P < 0.05) of the effective layer and the mammillary knob density (P < 0.01) in the eggshell ultrastructure of the LGG group increased significantly, while the mammillary layer (P < 0.05) and knob width (P < 0.01) decreased significantly. The LGG-treated hens had significantly lower serum concentrations of low-density lipoprotein (P < 0.05), free fatty acids (P < 0.01), and liver triglyceride (P < 0.05) levels than those in the CON group. CONCLUSIONS: LGG supplementation significantly decreases the feed conversion ratio, improves eggshell quality by altering the ultrastructure, and improves lipid metabolism in the late laying period.
