RESUMO

Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a major disease of wheat and barley worldwide and is caused by different species in the genus Fusarium, Fusarium graminearum being the most important. We conducted population genomics analyses using SNPs obtained through genotyping by sequencing of over 500 isolates of F. graminearum from the US Upper Midwest, New York, Louisiana, and Uruguay. PCA and STRUCTURE analyses group our isolates into four previously described populations: NA1, NA2, Southern Louisiana (SLA) and Gulf Coast (GC). Some isolates were not assigned to populations because of mixed ancestry. Population structure was associated with toxin genotype and geographic origin. The NA1, NA2, and SLA populations are differentiated (FST 0.385 - 0.551) but the presence of admixed isolates indicates that the populations are not reproductively isolated. Patterns of linkage disequilibrium (LD) decay suggest frequent recombination within populations. Fusarium graminearum populations from the US have great evolutionary potential given the high recombination rate and a large proportion of admixed isolates. The NA1, NA2, and Southern Louisiana (SLA) populations separated from their common ancestral population roughly at the same time in the past and are evolving with moderate levels of subsequent gene flow between them. Genome-wide selection scans in all three populations revealed outlier regions with the strongest signatures of recent positive natural selection. These outlier regions include many genes with unknown function and some genes with known roles in plant-microbe interaction, fungicide/drug resistance, cellular transport and genes that are related to cellular organelles. Only a very small proportion of outlier regions are shared as outliers among the three populations, suggesting unique host-pathogen interactions and environmental adaptation.

In the United States, modelling studies suggest a high prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in incarcerated populations. However, limited HCV testing has been conducted in prisons. Through the Louisiana Hepatitis C Elimination Plan, persons incarcerated in the eight state prisons were offered HCV testing from 20 September 2019 to 14 July 2022, and facility entry/exit HCV testing was introduced. Multivariable logistic regression was used to evaluate associations with HCV antibody (anti-HCV) positivity and viremia. Of 17,231 persons in the eight state prisons screened for anti-HCV, 95.1% were male, 66.7% were 30-57 years old, 3% were living with HIV, 68.2% were Black and 2904 (16.9%) were anti-HCV positive. HCV RNA was detected in 69.3% of anti-HCV positive individuals tested. In the multivariable model, anti-HCV positivity was associated with older age including those 30-57 (odds ratio [OR] 3.53, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.96-4.20) and those ≥58 (OR 10.43, 95% CI 8.66-12.55) as compared to those ≤29 years of age, living with HIV (OR 1.68, 95% CI 1.36-2.07), hepatitis B (OR 1.83, 95% CI 1.25-2.69) and syphilis (OR 1.51, 95% CI 1.23-1.86). HCV viremia was associated with male sex (OR 1.89, 95% CI 1.36-2.63) and Black race (OR 1.42, 95% CI 1.20-1.68). HCV prevalence was high in the state prisons in Louisiana compared to community estimates. To the extent that Louisiana is representative, to eliminate HCV in the United States, it will be important for incarcerated persons to have access to HCV testing and treatment.

Ethylene oxide ("EtO") is an industrially made volatile organic compound and a known human carcinogen. There are few reliable reports of ambient EtO concentrations around production and end-use facilities, however, despite major exposure concerns. We present in situ, fast (1 Hz), sensitive EtO measurements made during February 2023 across the southeastern Louisiana industrial corridor. We aggregated mobile data at 500 m spatial resolution and reported average mixing ratios for 75 km of the corridor. Mean and median aggregated values were 31.4 and 23.3 ppt, respectively, and a majority (75%) of 500 m grid cells were above 10.9 ppt, the lifetime exposure concentration corresponding to 100-in-one million excess cancer risk (1 × 10-4). A small subset (3.3%) were above 109 ppt (1000-in-one million cancer risk, 1 × 10-3); these tended to be near EtO-emitting facilities, though we observed plumes over 10 km from the nearest facilities. Many plumes were highly correlated with other measured gases, indicating potential emission sources, and a subset was measured simultaneously with a second commercial analyzer, showing good agreement. We estimated EtO for 13 census tracts, all of which were higher than EPA estimates (median difference of 21.3 ppt). Our findings provide important information about EtO concentrations and potential exposure risks in a key industrial region and advance the application of EtO analytical methods for ambient sampling and mobile monitoring for air toxics.

The reniform nematode, Rotylenchulus reniformis, is a major yield-limiting pest of upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) in the United States that has been steadily increasing in incidence in many states. Reniform nematode-resistant cotton cultivars have recently become commercially available for cotton producers; however, few field trials have evaluated their efficacy as a nematode management tool. The aim of this study was to evaluate reniform nematode population development, plant growth, and seed cotton yield of reniform nematode-resistant cotton cultivars in two nematode-infested fields in Louisiana. Replicated small-plot field trials were conducted in St. Joseph, LA (NERS field) and Winnsboro, LA (MRRS field) during the 2022 and 2023 growing seasons. In 2022, cultivars evaluated included: (1) DP 1646 B2XF (susceptible/tolerant), (2) DP 2141NR B3XF (resistant), (3) PHY 332 W3FE (resistant), (4) PHY 411 W3FE (resistant), and (5) PHY 443 W3FE (resistant). In 2023, an additional susceptible cotton cultivar, PHY 340 W3FE, was also included. All nematode-resistant cotton cultivars evaluated provided suppression of reniform nematode population development relative to that of the susceptible cotton cultivars, with suppression of nematode soil population densities at harvest ranging from 49 - 81% relative to DP 1646 B2XF. The resistant cultivar PHY 411 W3FE provided the most consistent suppression of reniform nematode population development, reducing reniform nematode soil population densities at harvest in both field locations and both trial years. In contrast, DP 2141NR B3XF only reduced soil population densities at harvest in the NERS field in 2023. Despite relatively consistent nematode suppression and improvements in plant vigor ratings and canopy coverage associated with the resistant cotton cultivars, a yield increase was only observed with PHY 332 W3FE and PHY 411 W3FE planted at the NERS field in 2023. Despite strong resistance to reniform nematode in the evaluated cotton cultivars, nematode soil population densities still increased during the growing season in plots planted with resistant cotton cultivars, emphasizing the need for additional management tactics to use alongside host resistance. This study indicates that new reniform nematode-resistant cotton cultivars show promising potential to reduce nematode population development during the growing season in Louisiana.

RESUMO

Burkholderia thailandensis, an opportunistic pathogen found in the environment, is a bacterium closely related to B. pseudomallei, the cause of melioidosis. Human B. thailandensis infections are uncommon. We isolated B. thailandensis from water in Texas and Puerto Rico and soil in Mississippi in the United States, demonstrating a potential public health risk.

BACKGROUND: Louisiana continues to have one of the highest breast cancer mortality rates in the nation, and Black women are disproportionally affected. Louisiana has made advances in improving access to breast cancer screening through the expansion of Medicaid. There remains, however, broad underuse of advanced imaging technology such as screening breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), particularly for Black women. METHODS: Breast MRI has been proven to be very sensitive for the early detection of breast cancer in women at high risk. MRI is more sensitive than mammography for aggressive, invasive breast cancer types, which disproportionally affect Black women. Here the authors identify potential barriers to breast MRI screening in Black women, propose strategies to address disparities in access, and advocate for specific recommendations for change. RESULTS: Cost was identified as one of the greatest barriers to screening breast MRI. The authors propose implementation of cost-saving, abbreviated protocols to address cost along with lobbying for further expansion of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to include coverage for screening breast MRI. In addition, addressing gaps in communication and knowledge and facilitating providers' ability to readily identify women who might benefit from MRI could be particularly impactful for high-risk Black women in Louisiana communities. CONCLUSIONS: Since the adoption of the ACA in Louisiana, Black women have continued to have disproportionally high breast cancer mortality rates. This persistent disparity provides evidence that additional change is needed. This change should include exploring innovative ways to make advanced imaging technology such as breast MRI more accessible and expanding research to specifically address community and culturally specific barriers.

RESUMO

A red ruffed lemur (Varecia rubra) from a zoo in Louisiana, USA, was euthanized for worsening paresis. Brain and spinal cord histology identified eosinophilic meningoencephalomyelitis with intralesional adult Angiostrongylus sp. nematodes. PCR and sequencing confirmed A. cantonensis infection, indicating this parasite constitutes an emerging zoonosis in the southeastern United States.

BACKGROUND: The overall survival rate of prostate cancer (PCa) has improved over the past decades. However, huge socioeconomic and racial disparities in overall and prostate cancer-specific mortality exist. The neighborhood-level factors including socioeconomic disadvantage and lack of access to care may contribute to disparities in cancer mortality. This study examines the impact of neighborhood deprivation on mortality among PCa survivors. METHODS: North Carolina-Louisiana Prostate Cancer Project (PCaP) data were used. A total of 2113 men, 1046 AA and 1067 EA, with PCa were included in the analysis. Neighborhood deprivation was measured by the Area Deprivation Index (ADI) at the census block group level using data from the US Census Bureau. Quintiles of ADI were created. Cox proportional hazards and competing risk models with mixed effects were performed to estimate the effect of neighborhood deprivation on all-cause and PCa-specific mortality adjusted for age, race, study site, insurance status, and comorbidities. RESULTS: Participants living in the most deprived neighborhoods had an increased risk for all-cause mortality (quintiles 4 + 5: adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] = 1.51, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.16-1.96) compared to those in the least deprived (quintile 1) neighborhoods. The risk of prostate cancer-specific mortality was also higher among those living in the deprived neighborhoods (quintiles 4 + 5: aHR = 1.90, 95% CI = 1.10-3.50) than those in the least deprived neighborhood. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest neighborhood-level resources or health interventions are essential to improve survival among men with PCa. Additional research should focus on the mechanisms of how the neighborhood environment affects mortality.

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted field research programs, making conservation and management decision-making more challenging. However, it may be possible to conduct population assessments using integrated models that combine community science data with existing data from structured surveys. We developed a space-time integrated model to characterize spatial and temporal variability in population distribution. We fit our integrated model to 10 years of eBird (2010-2020) and 9 years of aerial survey (2010-2019) Mottled Duck count data to forecast 2020 population size along the western Gulf Coast of Texas and Louisiana. Estimates of Mottled Duck abundance were similar in magnitude to estimates calculated using previous methods but were more precise and showed evidence of a declining population. The spatial distribution for Mottled Ducks each year was characterized by several concentrations of relatively high abundance, although the location of these abundance "hotspots" varied over time. Expected abundance was higher for areas with a higher proportion of area covered by marsh habitat. By leveraging large-scale community science data, we were able to conduct a population assessment despite the disruption in structured surveys caused by the pandemic. As participation in community science platforms continues to increase, we anticipate modeling frameworks, like the integrated model we developed here, will become increasingly useful for informing conservation and management decision-making.

This study explores disaster recovery communication in the digital era. In particular, this study analyzes Twitter communication data corresponding to the 2016 Southern Louisiana flood recovery process and examines patterns and characteristics of long-term recovery communication. Based on network and sentiment analyses of the longitudinal Twitter data, the study identifies the dynamic changes in participants' numbers, dominant voices, and sentiments in social media communication during the long-term recovery process. From the additional content analysis of relevant news articles, in-depth contextual information is provided to support and supplement the findings. Findings show the weaning communication volume during the recovery phase, lacking local voices over the long-term recovery communication process, and prolonging negative sentiments over the recovery period. Based on the findings, the authors provide implications highlighting the need for investing in long-term recovery communication, better utilizing information from social media, and supporting local voices during disaster recovery.

There are always significant challenges in improving the safety culture by changing and adding additional safety protocols. The unknown impacts of COVID-19 and how it quickly spreads led the industry to institute essential safety protocols. This paper addresses two problem statements. The first problem statement is: what are the additional safety protocols for process safety, construction & maintenance, and personal protective equipment requirements? The second problem statement is: what are the cost and schedule impacts of industrial construction projects resulting from implementing safety protocols and process safety during construction with the added PPE? While complying with added safety protocols, the industrial construction industry cannot forget that it has a distinct reputation for high incident rates and less than desirable safety performance. In 2017, the construction industry suffered 971 fatalities. This alarming number is compared to 1123 total fatalities in 2017 for the Gulf Coast States. The objective is to share the rationale and practices of social distancing, required additional PPE, and personal hygiene practices to reduce spreading and outbreaks during a pandemic within an industrial construction environment. Before any construction work, the process safety teams must clear, isolate, and tag out process lines, equipment, and instruments to be repaired or replaced. The information presented demonstrates the significant cost and schedule impacts that industrial construction companies will encounter during a pandemic like COVID-19. This paper aims to improve safety processes, cost & schedule impacts, and prescribe additional personal protective equipment in industrial construction during a pandemic such as COVID-19. The COVID-19 pandemic spread globally in a very short period. The reactions in mitigating the spread were suggestive, with little to no data on safety protective equipment and practices. The contribution this paper addresses are how to employ efficient safety practices and policies during a pandemic in an industrial construction environment.

To assess transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in a detention facility experiencing a coronavirus disease outbreak and evaluate testing strategies, we conducted a prospective cohort investigation in a facility in Louisiana, USA. We conducted SARS-CoV-2 testing for detained persons in 6 quarantined dormitories at various time points. Of 143 persons, 53 were positive at the initial test, and an additional 58 persons were positive at later time points (cumulative incidence 78%). In 1 dormitory, all 45 detained persons initially were negative; 18 days later, 40 (89%) were positive. Among persons who were SARS-CoV-2 positive, 47% (52/111) were asymptomatic at the time of specimen collection; 14 had replication-competent virus isolated. Serial SARS-CoV-2 testing might help interrupt transmission through medical isolation and quarantine. Testing in correctional and detention facilities will be most effective when initiated early in an outbreak, inclusive of all exposed persons, and paired with infection prevention and control.

By using paired molecular and antibody testing for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection, we determined point prevalence and seroprevalence in Louisiana, USA, during the second phase of reopening. Infections were highly variable by race and ethnicity, work environment, and ZIP code. Census-weighted seroprevalence was 3.6%, and point prevalence was 3.0%.

BACKGROUND: Louisiana is one of the few Southern states that enacted the Medicaid expansion of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA). To the authors' knowledge, the issue of how this has affected the breast cancer landscape in Louisiana is unknown. The authors have postulated that ACA expansion had a positive impact for Louisiana women diagnosed with breast cancer. METHODS: Data from the Louisiana Tumor Registry regarding 14,640 women aged 20 to 64 years who resided in Louisiana and were diagnosed with American Joint Committee on Cancer stage 0 to stage IV breast cancer between 2012 and 2018 were analyzed. The study period was divided into 2 groups: 1) before ACA expansion (January 1, 2012-May 31, 2016); and 2) after ACA expansion (June 1, 2016-December 31, 2018). The chi-square test and multivariable logistic regression models were used to assess the impact of ACA expansion. A P value <.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: After ACA expansion, the rate of uninsured patients decreased from 5.4% to 3.0% (P < .0001), and the rate of Medicaid recipients increased from 11.6% to 17.7% (P < .0001). The diagnosis of stage I breast cancer increased from 36.8% to 44.7% (P < .0001), whereas the diagnosis of stage III breast cancer decreased from 10.7% to 8.5% (P < .0001). The receipt of radiotherapy after breast-conserving surgery increased from 81.2% to 84.0% (P = .0035), and the receipt of radiotherapy within 90 days increased from 57.2% to 61.7% (P = .0012). After adjustment for sociodemographic and clinical variables, the models demonstrated that ACA expansion decreased the uninsured rate by 48% (odds ratio [OR], 0.52; 95% CI, 0.43-0.63), increased the diagnosis of early-stage disease (stage0 to stage II) by 27% (OR, 1.27; 95% CI, 1.15-1.41), increased receipt of radiotherapy after breast-conserving surgery by 19% (OR, 1.19; 95% CI, 1.03-1.37), and reduced the delay of receipt of radiotherapy by 16% (OR, 0.84; 95% CI, 0.74-0.95). CONCLUSIONS: ACA expansion in Louisiana reduced the uninsured rate, increased the diagnosis of early-stage disease, and increased access to treatment.

BACKGROUND: It is now common to search for health information online. A 2013 Pew Research Center survey found that 77% of online health seekers began their query at a search engine. The widespread use of online health information seeking also applies to women's reproductive health. Despite online interest in birth control, not much is known about related interests and concerns reflected in the search terms in the United States. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we identify the top search terms on Google related to birth control in Louisiana and Mississippi and compare those results to the broader United States, examining how Google searches on birth control have evolved over time and identifying regional variation within states. METHODS: We accessed search data on birth control from 2014-2018 from 2 Google application programming interfaces (APIs), Google Trends and Google Health Trends. We selected Google as it is the most commonly used search engine. We focused our analysis on data from 2017 and compared with 2018 data as appropriate. To assess trends, we analyzed data from 2014 through 2018. To compare the relative search frequencies of the top queries across Louisiana, Mississippi, and the United States, we used the Google Health Trends API. Relative search volume by designated marketing area (DMA) gave us the rankings of search volume for each birth control method in each DMA as compared to one another. RESULTS: Results showed that when people searched for "birth control" in Louisiana and the broader United States, they were searching for information on a diverse spectrum of methods. This differs from Mississippi, where the data indicated people were mainly searching for information related to birth control pills. Across all locations, searches for birth control pills were significantly higher than any other queries related to birth control in the United States, Louisiana, and Mississippi, and this trend remained constant from 2014 to 2018. Regional level analysis showed variations in search traffic for birth control across each state. CONCLUSIONS: The internet is a growing source of health information for many users, including information on birth control. Understanding popular Google search queries on birth control can inform in-person discussions initiated by family planning practitioners and broader birth control messaging campaigns. The low economic value of this species has depressed interest and research, and although the species is known for its extremely low fecundity and large oocytes, little else is known about this catfish species. A total of 1230 samples across all months of the year from 2016 to 2018 resulted in 681 females, and analysis of gonado-somatic index (IG ) revealed 1% to be a clear cut-off indicating maturity. Females are considered capable of spawning from April to June when IG averaged 4-8%. Both atresia and post-ovulatory follicles were present in July, suggesting that spawning ends in July in the northern GOM. The 1% IG cut-off was used to designate maturity, and from that an L50 of 253 mm was estimated. Batch fecundity from 41 females estimated a mean batch size of 36 oocytes. Perhaps the most interesting finding was the presence of secondary growth stage oocytes (e.g., cortical alveoli) from July through November, well outside the spawning capable period. Furthermore, 78% of females had some early vitellogenic oocytes present during the non-spawning season, and the distribution of these relatively large (2-5 mm) oocytes did not change over time. The results here are not only important as reproductive biology information for a common and abundant species, but also present interesting and unusual patterns of non-spawning season oocyte development that is not commonly seen in Western Hemisphere subtropical fish species.

RESUMO

Using a novel recruitment method and paired molecular and antibody testing for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection, we determined seroprevalence in a racially diverse municipality in Louisiana, USA. Infections were highly variable by ZIP code and differed by race/ethnicity. Overall census-weighted seroprevalence was 6.9%, and the calculated infection fatality ratio was 1.63%.

With the threat of climate change looming, the public health community has an interest in identifying communities at the highest risk of devastation based not only on geographic features but also on social characteristics. Indices of community social vulnerability can be created by applying a spatial factor analysis to a set of relevant social variables measured for each community; however, current spatial factor analysis methodology is ill-equipped to handle spatially misaligned data. We introduce a joint spatial factor analysis model that can accommodate spatial data from two distinct partitions of a geographic space and identify a common set of latent factors underlying them. By defining the latent factors over the intersection of the two partitions, the model minimizes loss of information. Using simulated data constructed to mimic the spatial structure of our real data, we confirm the reliability of the model and demonstrate its superiority over competing ad hoc methods for dealing with misaligned data in spatial factor analysis. Finally, we construct an index of community social vulnerability for each census tract in Louisiana, a state prone to environmental disasters, which could be exacerbated by climate change, by applying the joint spatial factor analysis model to a set of misaligned social indicator data from the state. To demonstrate the utility of this index, we integrate it with Louisiana flood insurance claims data to identify communities that may be at particularly high risk during natural disasters, based on both social and geographic features.

BACKGROUND: Individual perceptions of personal and national threats posed by COVID-19 shaped initial response to the pandemic. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in residents' awareness about COVID-19 and to characterize those who were more aware and responsive during the early stages of the pandemic in Louisiana. METHODS: In response to the mounting threat of COVID-19, we added questions to an ongoing food preference study held at Louisiana State University from March 3rd through March 12th, 2020. We asked how likely it was that the spread of the coronavirus will cause a national public health crisis and participants' level of concern about contracting COVID-19 by attending campus events. We used regression and classification tree analysis to identify correlations between these responses and (a) national and local COVID case counts; (b) personal characteristics and (c) randomly assigned information treatments provided as part of the food preference study. RESULTS: We found participants expressed a higher likelihood of an impending national crisis as the number of national and local confirmed cases increased. However, concerns about contracting COVID-19 by attending campus events rose more slowly in response to the increasing national and local confirmed case count. By the end of this study on March 12th, 2020 although 89% of participants agreed that COVID-19 would likely cause a public health crisis, only 65% of the participants expressed concerns about contracting COVID-19 from event attendance. These participants were significantly more likely to be younger students, in the highest income group, and to have participated in the study by responding to same-day, in-person flyer distribution. CONCLUSIONS: These results provide initial insights about the perceptions of the COVID-19 public health crisis during its early stages in Louisiana. We concluded with suggestions for universities and similar institutions as in-person activities resume in the absence of widespread vaccination.

Sugarcane is an economically important crop for both food and biofuel industries. Marker-assisted breeding in sugarcane is becoming a reality with the recent development and deployment of markers linked with disease resistance genes. Large linkage disequilibrium in sugarcane makes genome-wide association studies (GWAS) a better alternative to biparental mapping to identify markers associated with agronomic traits. GWAS was conducted on a Louisiana core collection to identify marker-trait associations (MTA) for 11 cane yield and sucrose traits using single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and insertion-deletion (Indel) markers. Significant (P < .05) MTAs were identified for all traits where the top ranked markers explained up to 15% of the total phenotypic variation. High correlations (0.732 to 0.999) were observed between sucrose traits and 56 markers were found consistent across multiple traits. These markers following validation in more diverse populations could be used in marker-assisted selection of clones in sugarcane breeding program in Louisiana and elsewhere.
