Individual differences in cognitive performance in childhood are a key predictor of significant life outcomes such as educational attainment and mental health. Differences in cognitive ability are governed in part by variations in brain structure. However, studies commonly focus on either gray or white matter metrics in humans, leaving open the key question as to whether gray or white matter microstructure plays distinct or complementary roles supporting cognitive performance. To compare the role of gray and white matter in supporting cognitive performance, we used regularized structural equation models to predict cognitive performance with gray and white matter measures. Specifically, we compared how gray matter (volume, cortical thickness, and surface area) and white matter measures (volume, fractional anisotropy, and mean diffusivity) predicted individual differences in cognitive performance. The models were tested in 11,876 children (ABCD Study; 5,680 female, 6,196 male) at 10â years old. We found that gray and white matter metrics bring partly nonoverlapping information to predict cognitive performance. The models with only gray or white matter explained respectively 15.4 and 12.4% of the variance in cognitive performance, while the combined model explained 19.0%. Zooming in, we additionally found that different metrics within gray and white matter had different predictive power and that the tracts/regions that were most predictive of cognitive performance differed across metrics. These results show that studies focusing on a single metric in either gray or white matter to study the link between brain structure and cognitive performance are missing a key part of the equation.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is the most common chronic inflammatory skin disease in both pediatric and adult populations. The development of AD has been linked to antibiotic usage, which causes perturbation of the microbiome and has been associated with abnormal immune system function. However, imbalances in the gut microbiome itself associated with antibiotic usage have been inconsistently linked to AD. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to elucidate the timing and specific factors mediating the relationship between systemic (oral or intravenous) antibiotic usage and AD. METHODS: We used statistical modeling and differential analysis to link CHILD Cohort Study participants' history of antibiotic usage and early-life gut microbiome alterations to AD. RESULTS: Here we report that systemic antibiotics during the first year of life, as compared to later, are associated with AD risk (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.81; 95% CI: 1.28-2.57; P < .001), with an increased number of antibiotic courses corresponding to a dose response-like increased risk of AD risk (1 course: aOR: 1.67; 95% CI: 1.17-2.38; 2 or more courses: aOR: 2.16; 95% CI: 1.30-3.59). Further, we demonstrate that microbiome alterations associated with both AD and systemic antibiotic usage fully mediate the effect of antibiotic usage on the development of AD (ßindirect = 0.072; P < .001). Alterations in the 1-year infant gut microbiome of participants who would later develop AD included increased Tyzzerella nexilis, increased monosaccharide utilization, and parallel decreased Bifidobacterium and Eubacterium spp, and fermentative pathways. CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate that early-life antibiotic usage, especially in the first year of life, modulates key gut microbiome components that may be used as markers to predict and possibly prevent the development of AD.

Most prior research has focused on characterizing averages in cognition, brain characteristics, or behavior, and attempting to predict differences in these averages among individuals. However, this overwhelming focus on mean levels may leave us with an incomplete picture of what drives individual differences in behavioral phenotypes by ignoring the variability of behavior around an individual's mean. In particular, enhanced white matter (WM) structural microstructure has been hypothesized to support consistent behavioral performance by decreasing Gaussian noise in signal transfer. Conversely, lower indices of WM microstructure are associated with greater within-subject variance in the ability to deploy performance-related resources, especially in clinical populations. We tested a mechanistic account of the "neural noise" hypothesis in a large adult lifespan cohort (Cambridge Centre for Ageing and Neuroscience) with over 2500 adults (ages 18-102; 1508 female; 1173 male; 2681 behavioral sessions; 708 MRI scans) using WM fractional anisotropy to predict mean levels and variability in reaction time performance on a simple behavioral task using a dynamic structural equation model. By modeling robust and reliable individual differences in within-person variability, we found support for a neural noise hypothesis (Kail, 1997), with lower fractional anisotropy predicted individual differences in separable components of behavioral performance estimated using dynamic structural equation model, including slower mean responses and increased variability. These effects remained when including age, suggesting consistent effects of WM microstructure across the adult lifespan unique from concurrent effects of aging. Crucially, we show that variability can be reliably separated from mean performance using advanced modeling tools, enabling tests of distinct hypotheses for each component of performance.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Human cognitive performance is defined not just by the long-run average, but trial-to-trial variability around that average. However, investigations of cognitive abilities and changes during aging have largely ignored this variability component of behavior. We provide evidence that white matter (WM) microstructure predicts individual differences in mean performance and variability in a sample spanning the adult lifespan (18-102). Unlike prior studies of cognitive performance and variability, we modeled variability directly and distinct from mean performance using a dynamic structural equation model, which allows us to decouple variability from mean performance and other complex features of performance (e.g., autoregression). The effects of WM were robust above the effect of age, highlighting the role of WM in promoting fast and consistent performance.

We propose structural equation models (SEMs) as a general framework to infer causal networks for metabolites and other complex traits. Traditionally SEMs are used only for individual-level data under the assumption that all instrumental variables (IVs) are valid. To overcome these limitations, we propose both one- and two-sample approaches for causal network inference based on SEMs that can: (1) perform causal analysis and discover causal relationships among multiple traits; (2) account for the possible presence of some invalid IVs; (3) allow for data analysis using only genome-wide association studies (GWAS) summary statistics when individual-level data are not available; (4) consider the possibility of bidirectional relationships between traits. Our method employs a simple stepwise selection to identify invalid IVs, thus avoiding false positives while possibly increasing true discoveries based on two-stage least squares (2SLS). We use both real GWAS data and simulated data to demonstrate the superior performance of our method over the standard 2SLS/SEMs. For real data analysis, our proposed approach is applied to a human blood metabolite GWAS summary data set to uncover putative causal relationships among the metabolites; we also identify some metabolites (putative) causal to Alzheimer's disease (AD), which, along with the inferred causal metabolite network, suggest some possible pathways of metabolites involved in AD.

BACKGROUND: Social isolation and social connectedness are health determinants and aspects of social well-being with strong associations with psychological distress. This study evaluated relationships among social isolation, social connectedness, and psychological distress (i.e., depression, anxiety) over 1 year in young adult (YA) cancer survivors 18-39 years old. METHODS: Participants were YAs in a large cohort study that completed questionnaires every 2 months for 1 year. Social isolation, aspects of social connectedness (i.e., companionship, emotional support, instrumental support, and informational support), depression, and anxiety were assessed with Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System short form measures. Mixed-effect models were used to evaluate changes over time. Confirmatory factor analysis and multilevel structural equation modeling were used to define social connectedness as a latent construct and determine whether relationships between social isolation and psychological distress were mediated by social connectedness. RESULTS: Participants (N = 304) were mean (M) = 33.5 years old (SD = 4.7) and M = 4.5 years (SD = 3.5) post-initial cancer diagnosis. Most participants were female (67.4%) and non-Hispanic White (68.4%). Average scores for social well-being and psychological distress were within normative ranges and did not change (p values >.05). However, large proportions of participants reported at least mild social isolation (27%-30%), depressive symptoms (36%-37%), and symptoms of anxiety (49%-51%) at each time point. Across participants, more social isolation was related to less social connectedness (p values <.001), more depressive symptoms (p < .001), and more symptoms of anxiety (p < .001). Social connectedness mediated the relationship between social isolation and depression (p = .004), but not anxiety (p > .05). CONCLUSIONS: Social isolation and connectedness could be intervention targets for reducing depression among YA cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: The development of the plant in vitro techniques has brought about the variation identified in regenerants known as somaclonal or tissue culture-induced variation (TCIV). S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM), glutathione (GSH), low methylated pectins (LMP), and Cu(II) ions may be implicated in green plant regeneration efficiency (GPRE) and TCIV, according to studies in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and partially in triticale (× Triticosecale spp. Wittmack ex A. Camus 1927). Using structural equation models (SEM), these metabolites have been connected to the metabolic pathways (Krebs and Yang cycles, glycolysis, transsulfuration), but not for triticale. Using metabolomic and (epi)genetic data, the study sought to develop a triticale regeneration efficiency statistical model. The culture's induction medium was supplemented with various quantities of Cu(II) and Ag(I) ions for regeneration. The period of plant regeneration has also changed. The donor plant, anther-derived regenerants, and metAFLP were utilized to analyze TCIV concerning DNA in symmetric (CG, CHG) and asymmetric (CHH) sequence contexts. Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transfer Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy was used to gather the metabolomic information on LMP, SAM, and GSH. To frame the data, a structural equation model was employed. RESULTS: According to metAFLP analysis, the average sequence change in the CHH context was 8.65%, and 0.58% was de novo methylation. Absorbances of FTIR spectra in regions specific for LMP, SAM, and GSH were used as variables values introduced to the SEM model. The average number of green regenerants per 100 plated anthers was 2.55. CONCLUSIONS: The amounts of pectin demethylation, SAM, de novo methylation, and GSH are connected in the model to explain GPRE. By altering the concentration of Cu(II) ions in the medium, which influences the amount of pectin, triticale's GPRE can be increased.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate changes in proportions of peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets, the correlation between the lymphocyte subsets and cytokine levels in patients with GluR3B antibody-positive epilepsy, analyze the role of GluR3B antibodies and cytokines in the progression of epilepsy. In addition, the immunotherapeutic effect in patients with GluR3B antibody-positive epilepsy will be evaluated. METHODS: Patients with epilepsy hospitalized in the Department of Neurology of the affiliated Hospital of Xuzhou Medical University from December 2016 to May 2023 were recruited. GluR3B antibody levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Lymphocyte subset proportions were determined using flow cytometry, and serum concentrations of 12 cytokines were measured using cytometric beads array. Differences in T lymphocyte subsets and inflammatory factors were analysed between GluR3B antibody positive and negative patients. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to analyse the role of GluR3B antibodies and inflammatory factors in drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE). Finally, the therapeutic effect of immunotherapy on epilepsy patients with GluR3B antibodies was assessed. RESULTS: In this study, sixty-four cases of DRE, sixty-six cases of drug-naïve epilepsy (DNE), and forty-one cases of drug-responsive epilepsy were recruited. (1) DRE patients with positive GluR3B antibody were characterized by a significant increase in the proportion of cluster of differentiation (CD)4+ T lymphocytes, a decrease in CD8+ T lymphocytes, and an increase of CD4+/CD8+ ratio. Similar alterations in T lymphocyte subsets were observed in GluR3B antibody-positive patients with DNE. GluR3B antibody levels correlated positively with CD4+ T lymphocytes (r = 0.23) and negatively with CD8+ T lymphocytes (r=-0.18). (2) In patients with DRE, the serum concentrations of interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), IL-8, and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) were significantly higher in those with positive GluR3B antibody compared to those with negative GluR3B antibody. Serum IL-1ß levels were also higher in GluR3B antibody-positive DNE patients compared to antibody-negative DNE patients. In drug-responsive epilepsy patients with GluR3B antibody-positive, both serum IL-1ß and IFN-γ levels were higher than those with GluR3B antibody-negative. Moreover, the concentrations of serum GluR3B antibody were positively correlated with the levels of IL-1ß, IL-8, and IFN-γ. (3) SEM analysis indicated that GluR3B antibody may be a direct risk factor for DRE (direct effect = 4.479, 95%CI 0.409-8.503), or may be involved in DRE progression through affecting IFN-γ and IL-8 levels (total indirect effect = 5.101, 95%CI 1.756-8.818). (4) Immunotherapy significantly decreased seizure frequency and serum GluR3B antibody levels, and the seizure frequency was positively correlated with the levels of GluR3B antibody levels in patients receiving immunotherapy. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that GluR3B antibody may influence the progression of epilepsy through altering the proportion of CD4+ and CD8+ lymphocyte subsets and increasing proinflammatory cytokines. The seizure suppression of immunotherapy is associated with the decrease of GluR3B antibody levels. Thus, the present study contributes to a better understanding of the immunoregulatory mechanisms of autoimmune-associated epilepsy and provides a potential target for DRE.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with decreased heart rate variability (HRV) with an unclear intermediate mechanism. This study aimed to conduct mediation analysis to explore the impact of various adipose tissues on the relationship between T2DM and HRV. METHODS: A total of 380 participants were enrolled for analysis, including 249 patients with T2DM and 131 non-diabetic controls. The thicknesses of four adipose tissues (subcutaneous, extraperitoneal, intraperitoneal, and epicardial) were measured by abdominal ultrasound or echocardiography respectively. HRV was assessed by 24-hour Holter for monitoring both frequency domain indices (LF, HF, and LF/HF) and time domain indices (SDNN, SDANN, SDNN index, rMSSD and pNN50). Mediation analysis was used toexamine whether adipose tissues mediated the relationship between T2DM and each index of HRV. Then, a latent variable - HRV burden - was constructed by structural equation model with selected HRV indices to comprehensively assess the whole HRV. RESULTS: Compared to non-diabetic controls, patients with T2DM exhibited a significant reduction in indices of HRV, and a remarkable increase in the thicknesses of extraperitoneal, intraperitoneal, and epicardial adipose tissues. Mediation analysis found significant indirect effects of T2DM on six indices of HRV, including HF, SDNN, SDANN, SDNN index, rMSSD, and pNN50, which was mediated by epicardial adipose tissue rather than other adipose tissues, with the mediation proportions of 64.21%, 16.38%, 68.33%, 24.34%, 24.10% and 30.51%, respectively. Additionally, epicardial adipose tissue partially mediated the relationship between T2DM and reduced HRV burden (24.26%), which composed by SDNN, SDNN index, rMSSD, and pNN50. CONCLUSION: Epicardial adipose tissue partially mediated the relationship between T2DM and reduced HRV, which reinforces the value of targeting heart-specific visceral fat to prevent cardiac autonomic neuropathy in diabetes.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Blood-based small molecule metabolites offer easy accessibility and hold significant potential for insights into health processes, the impact of lifestyle, and genetic variation on disease, enabling precise risk prevention. In a prospective study with records of heart failure (HF) incidence, we present metabolite profiling data from individuals without HF at baseline. METHODS: We uncovered the interconnectivity of metabolites using data-driven and causal networks augmented with polygenic factors. Exploring the networks, we identified metabolite broadcasters, receivers, mediators, and subnetworks corresponding to functional classes of metabolites, and provided insights into the link between metabolomic architecture and regulation in health. We incorporated the network structure into the identification of metabolites associated with HF to control the effect of confounding metabolites. RESULTS: We identified metabolites associated with higher and lower risk of HF incidence, such as glycine, ureidopropionic and glycocholic acids, and LPC 18:2. These associations were not confounded by the other metabolites due to uncovering the connectivity among metabolites and adjusting each association for the confounding metabolites. Examples of our findings include the direct influence of asparagine on glycine, both of which were inversely associated with HF. These two metabolites were influenced by polygenic factors and only essential amino acids, which are not synthesized in the human body and are obtained directly from the diet. CONCLUSION: Metabolites may play a critical role in linking genetic background and lifestyle factors to HF incidence. Revealing the underlying connectivity of metabolites associated with HF strengthens the findings and facilitates studying complex conditions like HF.

Forests play a crucial role in global carbon cycling by absorbing and storing significant amounts of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Although boreal forests contribute to approximately 45% of the total forest carbon sink, tree growth and soil carbon sequestration are constrained by nutrient availability. Here, we examine if long-term nutrient input enhances tree productivity and whether this leads to carbon storage or whether stimulated microbial decomposition of organic matter limits soil carbon accumulation. Over six decades, nitrogen, phosphorus, and calcium were supplied to a Pinus sylvestris-dominated boreal forest. We found that nitrogen fertilization alone or together with calcium and/or phosphorus increased tree biomass production by 50% and soil carbon sequestration by 65% compared to unfertilized plots. However, the nonlinear relationship observed between tree productivity and soil carbon stock across treatments suggests microbial regulation. When phosphorus was co-applied with nitrogen, it acidified the soil, increased fungal biomass, altered microbial community composition, and enhanced biopolymer degradation capabilities. While no evidence of competition between ectomycorrhizal and saprotrophic fungi has been observed, key functional groups with the potential to reduce carbon stocks were identified. In contrast, when nitrogen was added without phosphorus, it increased soil carbon sequestration because microbial activity was likely limited by phosphorus availability. In conclusion, the addition of nitrogen to boreal forests may contribute to global warming mitigation, but this effect is context dependent.

BACKGROUND: Small airway dysfunction not only affects asthma control, but also has adverse effects on the psychological and/or social activities of asthma patients. However, few long-term observational studies have explored the complex relationship between small airway dysfunction and asthma control and health-related quality of life in patients with asthma exacerbations. METHODS: The study recruited 223 patients with exacerbations of asthma (i.e. those with at least one asthma attack over the past year) and 228 patients without exacerbations of asthma (i.e. those without asthma attacks over the past year). We evaluated SAD in patients with asthma exacerbations using impulse oscillometry method. At each evaluation time point within one year of follow-up, the attending physician conducts a case investigation of the patients. We analyzed the correlation between SAD and general characteristics (age, obesity, smoking history), type 2 inflammation (blood eosinophils, exhaled nitric oxide), FEV1, as well as asthma control (ACT) and health-related quality of life (mini-AQLQ) in patients with asthma exacerbations, and constructed a structural equation model to evaluate the causality of these clinical variables. RESULTS: The SAD prevalence in patients with asthma exacerbation is as high as 75%. SAD is connected with poor asthma control and poor health-related quality of life. The structural equation model indicates that age, obesity, FeNO, and FEV1 are independent predictive factors of SAD. SAD is the main determinant factor of asthma control, which in turn affected health-related quality of life. FEV1 and age directly affect asthma control and affect health-related quality of life through asthma control. In addition, there is a bidirectional relationship between FEV1 and small airway dysfunction and between asthma control and health-related quality of life. CONCLUSIONS: Small airways are involved from an early stage in asthma. Abnormal function of the small airways can significantly increase airway resistance in asthma patients, while worsening their clinical symptoms. In addition, aging is also a key risk factor for asthma control. Especially, small airway dysfunction links asthma control with health-related quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Different aspects of social relationships (e.g., social network size or loneliness) have been associated with dementia risk, while their overlap and potentially underlying pathways remain largely unexplored. This study therefore aimed to (1) discriminate between different facets of social relationships by means of factor analysis, (2) examine their associations with dementia risk, and (3) assess mediation by depressive symptoms. METHODS: Thirty-six items from questionnaires on social relationships administered in Wave 2 (2004/2005) of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (n = 7536) were used for exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Factors were then used as predictors in Cox proportional hazard models with dementia until Wave 9 as outcome, adjusted for demographics and cardiovascular risk factors. Structural equation modeling tested mediation by depressive symptoms through effect decomposition. RESULTS: Factor analyses identified six social factors. Across a median follow-up time of 11.8 years (IQR = 5.9-13.9 years), 501 people developed dementia. Higher factor scores for frequency and quality of contact with children (HR = 0.88; p = 0.021) and more frequent social activity engagement (HR = 0.84; p < 0.001) were associated with lower dementia risk. Likewise, higher factor scores for loneliness (HR = 1.13; p = 0.011) and negative experiences of social support (HR = 1.10; p = 0.047) were associated with higher dementia risk. Mediation analyses showed a significant partial effect mediation by depressive symptoms for all four factors. Additional analyses provided little evidence for reverse causation. CONCLUSIONS: Frequency and quality of social contacts, social activity engagement, and feelings of loneliness are associated with dementia risk and might be suitable targets for dementia prevention programs, partly by lowering depressive symptoms.

Contemporary genome-wide association study (GWAS) methods typically do not account for variability in genetic effects throughout development. We applied genomic structural equation modeling to combine developmentally-informative phenotype data and GWAS to create polygenic scores (PGS) for alcohol use frequency that are specific to developmental stage. Longitudinal cohort studies targeted for gene-identification analyses include the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (adolescence n = 1,118, early adulthood n = 2,762, adulthood n = 5,255), the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (adolescence n = 3,089, early adulthood n = 3,993, adulthood n = 5,149), and the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC; adolescence n = 5,382, early adulthood n = 3,613). PGS validation analyses were conducted in the COGA sample using an alternate version of the discovery analysis with COGA removed. Results suggest that genetic liability for alcohol use frequency in adolescence may be distinct from genetic liability for alcohol use frequency later in developmental periods. The age-specific PGS predicts an increase of 4 drinking days per year per PGS standard deviation when modeled separately from the common factor PGS in adulthood. The current work was underpowered at all steps of the analysis plan. Though small sample sizes and low statistical power limit the substantive conclusions that can be drawn regarding these research questions, this work provides a foundation for future genetic studies of developmental variability in the genetic underpinnings of alcohol use behaviors and genetically-informed, age-matched phenotype prediction.

The exploration of naming error patterns in aphasia provides insights into the cognitive processes underlying naming performance. We investigated how semantic and phonological abilities correlate and how they influence naming performance in aphasia. Data from 296 individuals with aphasia, drawn from the Moss Aphasia Psycholinguistics Project Database, were analyzed using a structural equation model. The model incorporated latent variables for semantics and phonology and manifest variables for naming accuracy and error patterns. There was a moderate positive correlation between semantics and phonology after controlling for overall aphasia severity. Both semantic and phonological abilities influenced naming accuracy. Semantic abilities negatively related to semantic, mixed, unrelated errors, and no responses. Interestingly, phonology positively affected semantic errors. Additionally, phonological abilities negatively related to each of phonological and neologism errors. These results highlight the role of semantic and phonological skills on naming performance in aphasia and reveal a relationship between these cognitive processes.

Partial least squares structural equation modeling is a simple approach that may be used to determine the factors associated with diseases. In the current study, we aimed to explore the most associated high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) as well as hematologic-inflammatory indices for the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). A total of 7362 healthy (non-CVD) participants aged 35-65 years old from baseline investigation were evaluated in the Phase 2 follow-up. Of these, 1022 individuals were found to have CVDs in the second phase (10-year follow-up) of the Mashhad Stroke and Heart Atherosclerotic Disorder (MASHAD) cohort study. We used partial least squares structural equation modeling to develop a prediction model for association of CVD risk factors and hs-CRP as well as hematologic-inflammatory indices in the study population. According to the study, age had the most significant impact on the presence of CVD. Increasing in age by one unit raises the risk of CVD by 0.166. Also, serum hs-CRP was found to have the second-highest impact on CVD; increasing in age by one unit raises the risk of CVD by 0.042. The study also discovered a strong and significant correlation between red cell distribution width (RDW) and CVD. Moreover, the study found that several factors such as hemoglobin (HGB), neutrophil (NEUT), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) have indirect effects on CVD that are mediated by hs-CRP while controlling for age, sex and social-economic factors. Generally, the results showed that age, hs-CRP, and RDW were the most important risk factors on CVD.

A mediation analysis approach is proposed for multiple exposures, multiple mediators, and a continuous scalar outcome under the linear structural equation modeling framework. It assumes that there exist orthogonal components that demonstrate parallel mediation mechanisms on the outcome, and thus is named principal component mediation analysis (PCMA). Likelihood-based estimators are introduced for simultaneous estimation of the component projections and effect parameters. The asymptotic distribution of the estimators is derived for low-dimensional data. A bootstrap procedure is introduced for inference. Simulation studies illustrate the superior performance of the proposed approach. Applied to a proteomics-imaging dataset from the Alzheimer's disease neuroimaging initiative (ADNI), the proposed framework identifies protein deposition - brain atrophy - memory deficit mechanisms consistent with existing knowledge and suggests potential AD pathology by integrating data collected from different modalities.

Compound effects of anthropogenic disturbances on wildlife emerge through a complex network of direct responses and species interactions. Land-use changes driven by energy and forestry industries are known to disrupt predator-prey dynamics in boreal ecosystems, yet how these disturbance effects propagate across mammal communities remains uncertain. Using structural equation modeling, we tested disturbance-mediated pathways governing the spatial structure of multipredator multiprey boreal mammal networks across a landscape-scale disturbance gradient within Canada's Athabasca oil sands region. Linear disturbances had pervasive direct effects, increasing site use for all focal species, except black bears and threatened caribou, in at least one landscape. Conversely, block (polygonal) disturbance effects were negative but less common. Indirect disturbance effects were widespread and mediated by caribou avoidance of wolves, tracking of primary prey by subordinate predators, and intraguild dependencies among predators and large prey. Context-dependent responses to linear disturbances were most common among prey and within the landscape with intermediate disturbance. Our research suggests that industrial disturbances directly affect a suite of boreal mammals by altering forage availability and movement, leading to indirect effects across a range of interacting predators and prey, including the keystone snowshoe hare. The complexity of network-level direct and indirect disturbance effects reinforces calls for increased investment in addressing habitat degradation as the root cause of threatened species declines and broader ecosystem change.

PREMISE: Leaf tensile resistance, a leaf's ability to withstand pulling forces, is an important determinant of plant ecological strategies. One potential driver of leaf tensile resistance is growing season length. When growing seasons are long, strong leaves, which often require more time and resources to construct than weak leaves, may be more advantageous than when growing seasons are short. Growing season length and other ecological conditions may also impact the morphological traits that underlie leaf tensile resistance. METHODS: To understand variation in leaf tensile resistance, we measured size-dependent leaf strength and size-independent leaf toughness in diverse genotypes of the widespread perennial grass Panicum virgatum (switchgrass) in a common garden. We then used quantitative genetic approaches to estimate the heritability of leaf tensile resistance and whether there were genetic correlations between leaf tensile resistance and other morphological traits. RESULTS: Leaf tensile resistance was positively associated with aboveground biomass (a proxy for fitness). Moreover, both measures of leaf tensile resistance exhibited high heritability and were positively genetically correlated with leaf lamina thickness and leaf mass per area (LMA). Leaf tensile resistance also increased with the growing season length in the habitat of origin, and this effect was mediated by both LMA and leaf thickness. CONCLUSIONS: Differences in growing season length may promote selection for different leaf lifespans and may explain existing variation in leaf tensile resistance in P. virgatum. In addition, the high heritability of leaf tensile resistance suggests that P. virgatum will be able to respond to climate change as growing seasons lengthen.

Anthropogenic activities may alter felid assemblage structure, facilitating the persistence of tolerant species (commonly mesopredators), excluding ecologically demanding ones (top predators) and, consequently, changing coexistence rules. We aimed to determine how human activities influence intraguild relationships among top predators and their cascading effects on mesopredators, which remain poorly understood despite evidence of top carnivore decline. We used structural equation modeling at a continental scale to investigate how habitat quality and quantity, livestock density, and other human pressures modified the intraguild relations of the 3 species that are at the top of the food chain in the Neotropics: jaguars (Panthera onca), pumas (Puma concolor), and ocelots (Leopardus pardalis). We included presence-absence data derived from systematic studies compiled in Neocarnivores data set for these felid species at 0.0833° resolution. Human disturbance reduced the probability of jaguar occurrence by -0.35 standard deviations. Unexpectedly, the presence of sheep (Ovis aries) or goats (Capra aegagrus hircus) and jaguars was positively related to the presence of pumas, whereas puma presence was negatively related to the presence of ocelots. Extent of forest cover had more of an effect on jaguar (ß = 0.23) and ocelot (ß = 0.12) occurrences than the extent of protected area, which did not have a significant effect. The lack of effect of human activities on puma presence and the positive effect of small livestock supports the notion that pumas are more adaptable to habitat disturbance than jaguars. Our findings suggest that human disturbance has the potential to reverse the hierarchical competition dominance among large felids, leading to an unbalanced community structure. This shift disadvantages jaguars and elevates the position of pumas in the assemblage hierarchy, resulting in the exclusion of ocelots, despite their relatively lower susceptibility to anthropogenic disturbance. Our results suggest that conservation efforts should extend beyond protected areas to encompass the surrounding landscape, where complexities and potential conflicts are more pronounced.

Buscamos determinar cómo influyen las actividades humanas sobre las relaciones entre gremios de los depredadores superiores y sus efectos en cascada sobre los mesodepredadores, que aún son poco conocidos a pesar de las pruebas del declive de los carnívoros superiores. OBJECTIVE: Given the high prevalence of hypertension among Chinese adults, this population is at a significantly increased risk of severe COVID-19 complications. The purpose of this study is to assess the willingness of Chinese hypertensive adults to receive the COVID-19 vaccine and to identify the diverse factors that shape their vaccination decisions. METHODS: Sampling was conducted utilizing multistage stratified random sampling, and ultimately, a total of 886 adult hypertensive patients from Luzhou City in Southwest China were included in this study. The questionnaire design was based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour and was used to investigate their willingness to be vaccinated with COVID-19. Structural equation modeling was employed for data analysis. RESULTS: The results showed that 75.6% of hypertensive individuals were willing to receive COVID-19 vaccination. The structural equation modeling revealed that Subjective Norms (path coefficient = 0.361, CR = 8.049, P < 0.001) and Attitudes (path coefficient = 0.253, CR = 4.447, P < 0.001) had positive effects on vaccination willingness, while Perceived Behavioral Control (path coefficient=-0.004, CR=-0.127, P = 0.899) had no significant impact on Behavioral Attitudes. Mediation analysis indicated that Knowledge (indirect path coefficient = 0.032, LLCI = 0.014, ULCI = 0.058), Risk Perception (indirect path coefficient = 0.077, LLCI = 0.038, ULCI = 0.124), and Subjective Norms (indirect path coefficient = 0.044, LLCI = 0.019, ULCI = 0.087) significantly influenced vaccination willingness through Attitudes as a mediating factor. CONCLUSION: The willingness of hypertensive individuals to receive the COVID-19 vaccination is not satisfactory. The Theory of Planned Behavior provides valuable insights into understanding their vaccination intentions. Efforts should be concentrated on enhancing the subjective norms, attitudes, and knowledge about vaccination of hypertensive patients.
