RESUMO

This study aimed to improve the mechanical properties of a composite material consisting of waste leather fibers (LF) and nitrile rubber (NBR) by partially replacing LF with waste polyamide fibers (PA). A ternary recycled composite NBR/LF/PA was produced by a simple mixing method and vulcanized by compression molding. The mechanical properties and dynamic mechanical properties of the composite were investigated in detail. The results showed that the mechanical properties of NBR/LF/PA increased with an increase in the PA ratio. The highest tensile strength value of NBR/LF/PA was found to have increased about 1.26 times, that is from 12.9 MPa of LF50 to 16.3 MPa of LF25PA25. Additionally, the ternary composite demonstrated high hysteresis loss, which was confirmed by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The presence of PA formed a non-woven network that significantly enhanced the abrasion resistance of the composite compared to NBR/LF. The failure mechanism was also analyzed through the observation of the failure surface using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). These findings suggest that the utilization of both waste fiber products together is a sustainable approach to reducing fibrous waste while improving the qualities of recycled rubber composites.

RESUMO

Leather processing companies are struggling with the problem of increasing costs of post-production waste disposal. Therefore, the issue of thermal waste disposal at the plant and the use of generated heat in the production process is becoming more and more popular. Leather waste on its own does not allow for autothermal combustion despite the sufficient higher heating value (HHV). Therefore the Authors proposed to improve the flammability of the fuel by adding a small amount of wood sawdust to leather waste and produce premixed pellets. Six such samples were incinerated in a laboratory-scale reactor, which enables the simultaneous measurement of characteristic temperatures, exhaust gas analysis and sample mass loss rate. Research has shown that even a small addition of sawdust enables a stable combustion process and does not cause the formation of sinters. In addition, studies of the ash showed that in the case of chromium-containing waste, a large part of it remained in the ash in the form of Cr2O3. Nevertheless, very fine ash causes the small fraction chromium to be carried with the flue gas stream, therefore controlled agglomeration of the ash structure would be advisable in the final installation. Emission analysis showed high and moderately high NOx and SO2 emissions, decreasing with the increase in the amount of sawdust addition in the sample. Research has shown that leather waste is not a burden, but can be an attractive and safe source of energy for the company, while improving waste management in a circular economy.

RESUMO

Currently, globally, 90 % of the tannery is still tanned by using chrome, resulting in chromium-containing wastewater and chromium-containing solid waste that will cause serious harm to the environment. Under the pressure of environmental protection, on the one hand, the leather manufacturing industry should to dispose the current problem of chromium pollution, especially chromium-containing solid waste (chromium-containing waste leather (CCWL)), on the other hand, to popularize chrome-free tanning agent. Organic chrome-free tanning agents are the way forward for chrome-free tanning agents. However, organic chrome-free tanning agents exhibit several limitations with respect to their preparation and applications: The preparation process is not eco-friendly, and physicochemical properties of tanned crust leather are poor. More importantly, the leather tanned by an organic chrome-free tanning agent has low absorptivity of traditional anionic wet finishing materials, resulting in high total dissolved solids in tannery wastewater, which increased the difficulty of tannery wastewater treatment, and posed a potential threat to the environment. In this study, collagen polypeptide (CP) was extracted by using in situ dechromization and industrial trypsin from CCWL, followed by modification with ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDE) to obtain an epoxy-terminated, biomass-based, amphoteric organic, chrome-free tanning agent (CP-EGDE) with a high isoelectric point of 5.16, and an epoxy value of 0.316 mol/100 g. CP-EGDE can be applied in the pickling-free and salt-free tanning processes to prepare wet white leather and the tannery wastewater with good degradability. The shrinkage temperature (Ts = 84.9 °C), grain flatness, fullness, softness, yellowing resistance, mechanical properties, absorptivity of traditional anionic fatliquor (88.4 %) and dyes (95.3 %) of CP-EGDE tanned leather exceeded those of commercial organic chrome-free tanning agents. This research considered both environmental protection and leather quality, especially greatly improving the absorptivity of traditional anionic wet finishing materials. CP-EGDE is expected to replace chrome tanning agents and has good application prospects.

RESUMO

Developing low-cost, green, high-performing electrode materials to address environmental pollutants and the energy crisis is significant but challenging. Herein, the bimetallic iron cobalt phosphide coated in waste biomass-derived N, P co-doping carbon (CoxFe1-xP@NPC) is constructed. Furthermore, the active site density and the water decomposition energy barrier of surface-coated NPC are modulated by optimizing the electronic structure of CoxFe1-xP via doping engineering. The Fe-modulated CoxFe1-xP@NPC exhibits a hierarchical porous self-supporting structure and excellent physical & chemical properties with excellent electrooxidation performance, achieving over 95% removal of TCH within 60 min. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations further confirms that N carries more positive charge and P carries more negative charge in the NPC of CoxFe1-xP@NPC with Fe modulation, which can promote the adsorption and dissociation of water molecules. Of note, Co0.75Fe025P@NPC displays a low water dissociation energy barrier to produce ·OH and a high energy barrier to produce O2 than its counterparts. This study offers new insight into controllable modulation of biomass carbon-based composite electrode catalytic activity for high-efficiency degradation of contaminants.

RESUMO

High-performance flexible conductive films are highly promising for the development of wearable devices, artificial intelligence, medical care, etc. Herein, a three-step procedure was developed to produce electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, Joule heating, and a hydrophobic nanofiber film based on hydrolysate of waste leather scraps (HWLS): (i) electrospinning preparation of the HWLS/polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) nanofiber film, (ii) carbonization of the HWLS/PAN/ZIF-67 nanofiber film, and (iii) coating of the carbon nanofiber@cobalt (Co@CNF) nanofiber film with perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (POTS). The X-ray diffraction results showed that metal nanoparticles and amorphous carbon had obvious peaks. The micromorphology results showed that metal nanoparticles were coated with carbon nanofibers. The conductivity and shielding efficiency of the carbon nanofiber film with 250 µm thickness could reach 45 S/m and 49 dB, respectively, and absorption values (A > 0.5) were higher than reflection (R) values for the Co@CNF nanofiber film, which indicated that the contribution of absorption loss was more significant than that of reflection loss. Ultrafast electrothermal response performances were also achieved, which could guarantee the normal functioning of films in cold conditions. The water contact angle of the Co@CNF@POTS nanofiber film was ∼151.3°, which displayed a self-cleaning property with water-proofing and antifouling. Absorption-dominant and low-reflection EMI shielding and electrothermal films not only showed broad application potential in flexible wearable electronic devices but also provided new avenues for the utilization of leather solid waste.

RESUMO

With the rapid development of wireless telecommunication technologies, it is of fundamental and technological significance to design and engineer high-performance shielding materials against electromagnetic interference (EMI). Herein, a three-step procedure is developed to produce hydrophobic, flexible nanofiber films for EMI shielding and pressure sensing based on hydrolysate of waste leather scraps (HWLS): (i) electrospinning preparation of HWLS/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber films, (ii) adsorption of silver nanowires (AgNWs) onto HWLS/PAN nanofiber films, and (iii) coating of HWLS/PAN/AgNWs nanofiber films with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Scanning electron microscopy studies show that AgNWs are interweaved with HWLS/PAN nanofibers to form a conductive network, exhibiting an electrical conductivity of 105 S m-1 and shielding efficiency of 65 dB for a 150 µm-thick HWLS/PAN/AgNWs film. The HWLS/PAN/AgNWs/PDMS film displays an even better electromagnetic shielding efficiency of 80 dB and a water contact angle of 132.5°. Results from this study highlight the unique potential of leather solid wastes for the production of high-performance, environmentally friendly, and low-cost EMI shielding materials.

RESUMO

In this study, we present the fabrication of nitrile butadiene rubber/waste leather fiber (NBR/WLF) composites with different weight percentages of WLF and NBR (0/100, 20/80, 30/70, 40/60, 50/50, 60/40 wt/wt). WLF was prepared by cutting the scrap leathers from the waste product of the Vietnamese leather industry. Subsequently, in order to make the short fibers, it was mixed by a hammer mill. The characteristics of WLF/NBR composites such as mechanical properties (tensile strength, tear strength, hardness), dynamic mechanical properties, toluene absorption, and morphology were carefully evaluated. As a result, the tensile strength and tear strength become larger with increasing WLF content from 0 to 50 wt% and they decrease when further increasing WLF content. The highest tensile strength of 12.5 MPa and tear strength of 72.47 N/mm were achieved with the WLF/NBR ratio of 50/50 wt%. Both hardness and resistance of the developed materials with toluene increased with increasing WLF content. The SEM results showed a good adhesion of NBR matrix and the WLF. The increasing of storage modulus (E') in comparison with raw NBR showed good compatibility between WLF and NBR matrix. This research showed that the recycled material from waste leather and NBR was successfully prepared and has great potential for manufacturing products such as floor covering courts and playgrounds, etc.
