BACKGROUND: Kidney involvement of visceral Leishmaniasis is previously reported, but knowledge is limited. Hypergammaglobulinemia is common in visceral leishmaniasis patients. Whether hypergammaglobulinemia after leishmaniasis depletion can cause kidney injury is not well reported yet. CASE PRESENTATION: We reported a patient who recovered from visceral Leishmaniasis but showed persistent hypergammaglobulinemia and elevated urinary protein. Kidney biopsy showed glomerular hypertrophy with mild segmental mesangial proliferation without tubulointerstitial involvement in light microscopy. No immune complex deposit was found in the mesangial area by neither immunofluorescent staining nor electronic microscope. Increased lysosomes were observed in proximal tubules by electronic microscope. Valsartan was administered to decrease urinary protein, and no immune-suppressive therapy was added. The urinary protein and serum IgG level gradually dropped, and serum creatinine level remained stable during three- month follow up. CONCLUSIONS: Hypergammaglobulinemia is unlikely to cause renal structural or functional damage in the short term. Angiotensin blockade significantly reduced urine protein, with a minor effect on IgG elimination.

OBJECTIVES: Onset of primary SS is usually between 40 and 60 years of age, with severe systemic complications in 15% of cases. We sought to determine whether early-onset disease is related to a specific phenotype and if it is predictive of a poor outcome. METHODS: Biological and clinical data from 393 patients recruited in the ASSESS cohort, a French multicentre prospective cohort, were compared according to age at diagnosis. RESULTS: Fifty-five patients had early-onset disease, defined as age ⩽35 years at diagnosis, and presented a significantly higher frequency of salivary gland enlargement (47.2% vs 33.3%, P = 0.045), adenopathy (25.5% vs 11.8%, P = 0.006), purpura (23.6% vs 9.2%, P = 0.002) and renal involvement (16.4% vs 4.4%, P = 0.003). They had a higher frequency of hypergammaglobulinaemia (60.8% vs 26.6%, P < 0.001), RF positivity (41.5% vs 20.2%, P < 0.001), low C3 level (18.9% vs 9.1%, P = 0.032), low C4 level (54.7% vs 40.2%, P = 0.048) and autoantibodies [84.6% with anti-SSA vs 54.4% (P < 0.001) and 57.7% with anti-SSB vs 29.7% (P < 0.001)]. The change in ESSDAI scores between baseline and the 5-year follow-up was significantly different (P = 0.005) with a trend for worsening in the early-onset group (0.72, P = 0.27) and a significant improvement in the later onset group (-1.27, P < 0.0001). CONCLUSION: Early-onset primary SS is associated with a specific phenotype defined by clinical and biological features known to be predictive factors of severe systemic disease. Interestingly, we showed a different evolution of the ESSDAI score depending on the age at disease onset, patients with early-onset disease tending to worsen over time.

The etiopathogenesis of autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) remains poorly understood. In this study, we sought to develop an animal model of human AIH to gain insight into the immunological mechanisms driving this condition. C57BL/6 mice were i.v. injected with adeno-associated viral vectors encoding murine IL-12 or luciferase under the control of a liver-specific promoter. Organ histology, response to immunosuppressive therapy, and biochemical and immunological parameters, including Ag-specific humoral and cellular response, were analyzed. Mechanistic studies were carried out using genetically modified mice and depletion of lymphocyte subpopulations. Adeno-associated virus IL-12-treated mice developed histological, biochemical, and immunological changes resembling type 1 AIH, including marked and persistent liver mononuclear cell infiltration, hepatic fibrosis, hypergammaglobulinemia, anti-nuclear and anti-smooth muscle actin Abs, and disease remission with immunosuppressive drugs. Interestingly, transgenic IL-12 was short-lived, but endogenous IL-12 expression was induced, and both IL-12 and IFN-γ remained elevated during the entire study period. IFN-γ was identified as an essential mediator of liver damage, and CD4 and CD8 T cells but not NK, NKT, or B cells were essential executors of hepatic injury. Furthermore, both MHC class I and MHC class II expression was upregulated at the hepatocellular membrane, and induction of autoreactive liver-specific T cells was detected. Remarkably, although immunoregulatory mechanisms were activated, they only partially mitigated liver damage. Thus, low and transient expression of transgenic IL-12 in hepatocytes causes loss of tolerance to hepatocellular Ags, leading to chronic hepatitis resembling human AIH type 1. This model provides a practical tool to explore AIH pathogenesis and novel therapies.

OBJECTIVES: Hepatitis-associated aplastic anemia (HAA) is a rare variant of aplastic anemia in which patients present with severe pancytopenia after an episode of acute hepatitis. The marrow failure is often rapid, severe, and usually fatal if untreated. The preceding hepatitis is largely under-studied. METHODS: Retrospective study of the clinical and histopathologic features of hepatitis in pediatric patients who subsequently developed aplastic anemia and comparison with consecutive cases of acute liver failure and random cases of autoimmune hepatitis during the same time frame. RESULTS: All 7 patients of HAA had significant elevations in aminotransferases and conjugated hyperbilirubinemia at initial presentation. Echoing liver function indices, cholestatic hepatitis with sinusoidal obstruction-type endothelial injury was seen histomorphologically. Autoimmune hepatitis serology such as anti-F-actin, anti-liver/kidney microsome, and hypergammaglobulinemia was negative in all patients. Five of 7 patients (71.4%) had, however, elevated antinuclear antibody, all with a speckled pattern. Hepatitis virus serology was negative in all patients. By immunohistochemical staining, the lobular CD8/CD4 lymphocyte ratio was markedly elevated in all of the initial samples with significant reduction in this ratio (P = 0.03) in 3 patients post treatment (ursodiol, antibiotics, and/or immunosuppressive therapy). CONCLUSIONS: Hepatitis preceding HAA is characterized by marked elevation of aminotransferases, conjugated hyperbilirubinemia, elevated antinuclear antibody with a speckled pattern, cholestatic hepatitis with sinusoidal obstruction morphology, and CD8 dominant lobular infiltrates. The present study suggests HAA may result from cytotoxic T-cell-mediated sinusoidal endothelial and hepatocytic injury.

RESUMO

Relapsing polychondritis (RP) is a rare systemic autoimmune disorder characterized by the episodic and progressive deterioration of cartilage inflammation. Approximately 30% patients with RP have concurrent disease. However, there have been no previous reports of RP complicated by immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD). Here we report the case of a 67-year-old male who developed IgG4-RD approximately 20 years after RP diagnosis. The association between IgG4-RD and RP remains unclear.

The development of hematopoietic neoplasms is often associated with mutations, altered gene expression or chromosomal translocations. Recently, the t(5, 9)(q33;q22) translocation was found in a subset of peripheral T cell lymphomas and was shown to result in an IL-2-inducible kinase-spleen tyrosine kinase (ITK-Syk) fusion transcript. In this study, we show that T cell-specific expression of the ITK-Syk oncogene in mice leads to an early onset and aggressive polyclonal T cell lymphoproliferation with concomitant B cell expansion and systemic inflammation by 7-9 wk of age. Because this phenotype is strikingly different from previous work showing that ITK-Syk expression causes clonal T cell lymphoma by 20-27 wk of age, we investigated the underlying molecular mechanism in more detail. We show that the reason for the severe phenotype is the lack of B-lymphocyte-induced maturation protein-1 (Blimp-1) induction by low ITK-Syk expression. In contrast, high ITK-Syk oncogene expression induces terminal T cell differentiation in the thymus by activating Blimp-1, thereby leading to elimination of oncogene-expressing cells early in development. Our data suggest that terminal differentiation is an important mechanism to prevent oncogene-expressing cells from malignant transformation, as high ITK-Syk oncogene activity induces cell elimination. Accordingly, for transformation, a specific amount of oncogene is required, or alternatively, the induction of terminal differentiation is defective.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between radiological findings, blood eosinophilia, hyperimmunoglobulinemia E and G and Toxocara seropositivity in Polish children with newly diagnosed pulmonary infiltration. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the documentation of 119 patients, aged 1 to 18 years (mean age: 7.21 ± 4.82), who were seropositive in Toxocara sp. antibodies. In all cases, peripheral blood eosinophils and leukocyte counts, serum total IgE, IgG levels and specific IgG antibodies against excretory and secretory Toxocara sp. antigens were measured at the first presentation. After the confirmation of seropositivity, all children had a routine radiological examination. RESULTS: In the documentation of 23 children (mean age 3.58 ± 2.63 years) we found abnormalities in the radiological examination of their lungs. Fifteen children who had abnormalities in radiological findings presented clinical respiratory complaints such as chronic cough, wheezing, asthma and haemoptysis. Eight children were asymptomatic. The analysis of peripheral eosinophils and leukocyte number, the level of IgE and specific anti-Toxocara IgG presented significantly higher values in children with radiological lesions than in children who had correct radiology. The concentrations of total IgG and gamma globulins were not significantly different. In 10 patients CT showed irregular round nodules with and without halo ranging from 1 to 13 mm. The number of nodules varied from a single lesion to multiple, disseminated ones. All nodules were located in peripheral areas of the lungs. None of them were found in the central areas. In 13 patients, CT images showed ground-glass opacities with ill-defined margins. None of the CT images presented lymphadenopathy and pleural effusion. CONCLUSION: The pulmonary lesions in small children with high eosinophilia and hyperimmunoglobulinemia E could be related to toxocariasis and for this reason they are eligible to undergo therapy with prolonged observation for several months, rather than start invasive malignancy investigations.

Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) with features of autoimmunity (AI) represents an important category of hepatotoxicity due to medication exposure. Drugs repeatedly associated with AI-DILI include diclofenac, α-methyl DOPA, hydralazine, nitrofurantoin, minocycline, and more recently statins and anti-TNF-α agents. Usually, symptoms of acute liver injury occur within a few months after initiation of a culprit medication, but a longer latency period is possible. Like idiopathic autoimmune hepatitis, circulating autoantibodies and a hypergammaglobulinemia are frequently present in sera from patients with AI-DILI. If performed, a liver biopsy should demonstrate interface hepatitis with a prominent plasma cell infiltrate. The severity of AI-DILI is variable, but a complete resolution after withdrawal of the offending medication is the expectation. A response to corticosteroid therapy supports the diagnosis, whereas a lack of recurrence of symptoms or signs following corticosteroid cessation distinguishes AI-DILI from idiopathic autoimmune hepatitis.

Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL) is the second most common peripheral T-cell lymphoma with unusual clinical and pathologic features and a poor prognosis despite intensive chemotherapy. Recent studies have suggested AITL derives from follicular helper T (T(FH)) cells, but the causative molecular pathways remain largely unknown. Here we show that approximately 50% of mice heterozygous for the "san" allele of Roquin develop tumors accompanied by hypergammaglobulinemia by 6 months of age. Affected lymph nodes displayed the histologic features diagnostic of AITL, except for the presence of expanded FDC networks. Accumulation of T(FH) cells preceded tumor development, and clonal rearrangements in the TCR-ß genes were present in most tumors. Furthermore, T(FH) cells exhibited increased clonality compared with non-T(FH) cells from the same lymph nodes, even in the absence of tumors. Genetic manipulations that prevent T(FH) development, such as deletion of ICOS, CD28, and SAP, partially or completely abrogated tumor development, confirming a T(FH)-derived origin. Roquin(san/+) mice emerge as a useful model to investigate the molecular pathogenesis of AITL and for preclinical testing of therapies aimed at targeting dysregulated T(FH) cells or their consequences.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is characterized by clonal expansion of malignant bone marrow cells producing a unique monoclonal immunoglobulin. The appearance of abnormal protein band (APB) in MM has been reported during follow-up. We aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with APB in a single center cohort. A total of 377 consecutive MM patients were treated at the Asan Medical Center between January 2002 and December 2012. We compared clinical characteristics and survival outcome between those with and without APB. Of the 377 patients, 34 (9 %) experienced APB. They comprised 18.2 % (27/148) of patients treated with autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) and 3.1 % (7/229) of those not receiving ASCT. APB occurred after a median of 7.9 months (range, 2.2-95.7 months) from diagnosis. Immunoglobulin isotypes at diagnosis were as follows: IgG (n = 10), IgA (n = 8), IgD (n = 5), free κ (n = 4), and free λ (n = 7). Nine patients experienced a second APB. With a median follow-up of 54.1 months, the median overall survival (OS) has not been reached in patients with APB and was 38.3 months in patients without (P < 0.001). Multivariate analysis indicated that the development of APB was a significant favorable prognostic factor for OS (hazard ratio 0.21; 95 % confidence interval 0.08-0.52). Serum ß2-microglobulin, albumin, creatinine, and ASCT were also independent prognostic factors for OS. Further investigation is required to establish the mechanisms underlying APB in MM.

We report a case of gray platelet syndrome (GPS) associated with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) at presentation. A 22-year-old male patient presenting with petechiae on his limbs was diagnosed with ITP due to a gradual decrease of his platelet count to a minimum of 26 × 10(9) /liter and an elevated platelet-associated IgG (PA-IgG) level in the absence of any other specific cause of thrombocytopenia. Administration of prednisolone increased his platelet count, but this dropped again to approximately 50 × 10(9) /liter as the dose was tapered, and remained at the same level after the treatment was terminated. Thirteen years later, we reassessed the cause of the thrombocytopenia because the PA-IgG level was found to be within the normal range. There were large hypogranular platelets on the blood film and a deficit of α-granules in the platelets on electron microscopy. On this basis, we diagnosed his thrombocytopenia as GPS. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a GPS case associated with ITP at presentation. This case illustrates the importance of carefully reviewing blood film results in the differential diagnosis of thrombocytopenia.

OBJECTIVE: Hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is a genetic disorder related to mutations in one of the coreceptors to the transforming growth factor-ß superfamily (ALK1 or endoglin). Besides the obvious vascular symptoms (epistaxis and arteriovenous malformations), patients have an unexplained high risk of severe bacterial infections. The aim of the study was to assess the main immunological functions of patients with HHT using the standard biological tests for primary immunodeficiencies. DESIGN, SETTING AND SUBJECTS: A prospective single-centre study of 42 consecutive adult patients with an established diagnosis of HHT was conducted at the National French HHT Reference Center (Lyon). Lymphocyte subpopulations and proliferation capacity, immunoglobulin levels and neutrophil and monocyte phagocytosis, oxidative burst and chemotaxis were assessed. RESULTS: Innate immunity was not altered in patients with HHT. With regard to adaptive immunity, significant changes were seen in immunological parameters: primarily, a lymphopenia in patients with HHT compared with healthy control subjects affecting mean CD4 (642 cells µL(-1) vs. 832 cells µL(-1) , P < 0.001), CD8 (295 cells µL(-1) vs. 501 cells µL(-1) , P < 0.0001) and natural killer (NK) cells (169 cells µL(-1) vs. 221 cells µL(-1) , P < 0.01), associated with increased levels of immunoglobulins G and A. This lymphopenia mainly concerned naïve T cells. Proliferation capacities of lymphocytes were normal. Lymphopenic patients had a higher frequency of iron supplementation but no increase in infection rate. Lower levels of immunoglobulin M and a higher rate of pulmonary arteriovenous malformations were found amongst patients with a history of severe infection. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with HHT exhibit immunological abnormalities including T CD4, T CD8 and NK cell lymphopenia and increased levels of immunoglobulins G and A. The observed low level of immunoglobulin M requires further investigation to determine whether it is a specific risk factor for infection in HHT.

Manifestations of chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) can resemble those seen in immunodeficiency states and autoimmune disorders. Reports by us and others suggest an involvement of B cells in the pathogenesis of cGVHD. We investigated B-lymphocyte subpopulations in cGVHD cohorts defined by serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels to characterize novel biomarkers for impairment of humoral immunity after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Seventy-six patients were enrolled a median of 46 months after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The hypogammaglobulinemia group had significantly diminished CD19(+) B cells (165 vs 454 vs 417 × 106L) with elevated CD19(+)CD21(low) immature (16.5%, 7.7%, and 9.1%) and CD19(+)CD21(int-high)CD38(high)IgM(high) transitional (10.5% vs 4.2% vs 6.3%) B-cell proportions compared with the normogammaglobulinemia and hypergammaglobulinemia groups. CD19(+)CD10(-)CD27(-)CD21(high) naive B cells were highly elevated in all patients with cGVHD. CD19(+)CD27(+)IgD(+) non-class-switched (4 vs 12 vs 11 × 106/L) and class-switched (7 vs 35 vs 42 × 106/L) memory B cells were significantly lower in the hypogammaglobulinemia group compared with the others. Besides significantly higher B-cell activation factor/B-cell ratios, significantly more cGVHD patients with hypergammaglobulinemia had autoantibodies compared with the hypogammaglobulinemia subgroup (68% vs 24%, P = .024). In conclusion, B-cell subpopulations can serve as novel cellular biomarkers for immunodeficiency and autoimmunity indicating different pathogenetic mechanisms of cGVHD and encouraging future prospective longitudinal studies.

In visceral leishmaniasis, the draining LN (DLN) is the initial site for colonization and establishment of infection after intradermal transmission by the sand fly vector; however, little is known about the developing immune response within this site. Using an intradermal infection model, which allows for parasite visceralization, we have examined the ongoing immune responses in the DLN of BALB/c mice infected with Leishmania infantum. Although not unexpected, at early times post-infection there is a marked B-cell expansion in the DLN, which persists throughout infection. However, the characteristics of this response were of interest; as early as day 7 post-infection, polyclonal antibodies (TNP, OVA, chromatin) were observed and the levels appeared comparable to the specific anti-leishmania response. Although B-cell-deficient JhD BALB/c mice are relatively resistant to infection, neither B-cell-derived IL-10 nor B-cell antigen presentation appear to be primarily responsible for the elevated parasitemia. However, passive transfer and reconstitution of JhD BALB/c with secretory immunoglobulins, (IgM or IgG; specific or non-specific immune complexes) results in increased susceptibility to L. infantum infection. Further, JhD BALB/c mice transgenetically reconstituted to secrete IgM demonstrated exacerbated disease in comparison to WT BALB/c mice as early as 2 days post-infection. Evidence suggests that complement activation (generation of C5a) and signaling via the C5a receptor (CD88) is related to the disease exacerbation caused by IgM rather than cytokine levels (IL-10 or IFN-gamma). Overall these studies indicate that polyclonal B-cell activation, which is known to be associated with human visceral leishmaniasis, is an early and intrinsic characteristic of disease and may represent a target for therapeutic intervention.

Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptor-associated factor 3 (TRAF3) regulates both innate and adaptive immunity by modulating signaling by Toll-like receptors (TLR) and TNF receptors. TRAF3 was recently identified as a tumor suppressor in human multiple myeloma, suggesting a prominent role in plasma cell homeostasis. We have generated transgenic mice expressing human TRAF3 in lymphocytes. These mice are normal at birth, but they develop over time plasmacytosis and hypergammaglobulinemia, as well as systemic inflammation and tertiary lymphoid organ formation. The analysis of the humoral responses of the TRAF3 mice demonstrated increased responses to T-dependent and T-independent antigens with increased production of antigen-specific immunoglobulin Gs (IgGs) compared with wild-type mice. Furthermore, TLR-mediated IgG production is also increased in TRAF3 B cells. In addition, TRAF3 mice develop autoimmunity and are predisposed to cancer, particularly squamous cell carcinomas of the tongue ( approximately 50% incidence) and salivary gland tumors. In summary, TRAF3 renders B cells hyperreactive to antigens and TLR agonists, promoting autoimmunity, inflammation, and cancer, hereby providing a new model for studying de novo carcinogenesis promoted by B cell-initiated chronic inflammation.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is related to immunoglobulin E (IgE) production, and a type-1 and type-2 helper T cell (Th1/Th2) imbalance has been hypothesized as the aetiology. While itching and scratching are important factors in the development of dermatitis, the mechanisms underlying these phenomena are poorly understood. We investigated the relationship between scratching, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), signs of dermatitis and serum Ig levels in NC/Nga mice, a model of AD. We also sensitized specific pathogen-free (SPF)-NC/Nga mice and BALB/c mice to mite antigen to determine the effects of IgE overproduction on scratching and investigated the involvement of mast cells and T/B cells in the induction of scratching using WBB6F1-W/W(v) mice and C.B.17/Icr-scid mice. Under conventional conditions, the scratch counts increased, followed by increases in TEWL and the inflammation score in NC/Nga mice that were not kept under SPF conditions. However, no change was observed in scratching, TEWL, or signs of dermatitis in mite antigen-sensitized SPF-NC/Nga and BALB/c mice, although the serum total IgE, IgG(1) and IgG(2a) levels increased. The scratch count increased significantly in both the WBB6F1-W/W(v) mice and C.B.17/Icr-scid mice when they were co-housed with skin-lesioned NC/Nga mice, raised under conventional conditions. These results show that IgE overproduction results from itch-associated scratching-induced dermatitis in NC/Nga mice.

Cutaneous plasmacytosis is a rare disease entity presenting with multiple extensive red-brown plaques, histopathology showing marked hyperplasia of mature polyclonal plasma cells, and polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia on serum protein electrophoresis, in the absence of an underlying secondary cause. We report in this article the first case of cutaneous plasmacytosis from Singapore. A 33-year-old Chinese woman presented with mildly pruritic reddish brown papules and plaques over her trunk and arms for 2 years. Physical examination, laboratory investigations, and radiographic examination were negative for systemic involvement and lymphadenopathy. Serum immunoelectrophoresis showed polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia with immunoglobulin G and immunoglobulin A. Two sets of skin biopsies performed 2 years apart essentially showed similar histopathological findings of a superficial and deep perivascular infiltrate with numerous mature plasma cells and small typical lymphocytes. There were lymphoid follicles with well-formed germinal centers and mantle zones, surrounded by mature lymphocytes. No light chain restriction was present on immunohistochemistry, and polymerase chain reaction for heavy chain gene rearrangement was negative for monoclonality. Despite potent topical corticosteroids and 8 months of phototherapy with narrow band ultraviolet light, there was no improvement. Intralesional triamcinolone injections to a few lesions afforded temporary relief of itch and flattening of lesions.

This Review outlines a practical approach to assessing and managing polyclonal hypergammaglobulinaemia in adults. Polyclonal hypergammaglobulinaemia is most commonly caused by liver disease, immune dysregulation, or inflammation, but can also provide an important diagnostic clue of rare diseases such as histiocyte disorders, autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome, Castleman disease, and IgG4-related disease. Causes of polyclonal hypergammaglobulinaemia can be divided into eight categories: liver disease, autoimmune disease and vasculitis, infection and inflammation, non-haematological malignancy, haematological disorders, IgG4-related disease, immunodeficiency syndromes, and iatrogenic (from immunoglobulin therapy). Measuring serum concentrations of C-reactive protein and IgG subclasses are helpful in diagnosis. IL-6-mediated inflammation, associated with persistently elevated C-reactive protein concentrations (≥30 mg/L), is an important driver of polyclonal hypergammaglobulinaemia in some cases. Although the presence of markedly elevated serum IgG4 concentrations (>5 g/L) is around 90% specific for diagnosing IgG4-related disease, mildly elevated serum IgG4 concentrations are seen in many conditions. In most cases, managing polyclonal hypergammaglobulinaemia simply involves treating the underlying condition. Rarely, however, polyclonal hypergammaglobulinaemia can lead to hyperviscosity, requiring plasmapheresis.

The murine acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (MAIDS) caused by defective LP-BM5 murine leukemia virus (MuLV) is a disease that shows severe immunodeficiency with abnormal lymphoproliferation, and hypergammaglobulinemia in susceptible C57BL/6 (B6) mice. To examine the cellular mechanisms of development of MAIDS, we injected LP-BM5 MuLV intraperitoneally into B6 mice bearing the X chromosome-linked immunodeficiency (xid). xid mice lack functionally mature B cells including Ly-1 B cells (also known as B-1 cells). All B6 mice died by 20 wk after LP-BM5 MuLV inoculation. In marked contrast, xid mice have continued to survive without any sign of MAIDS-related symptoms till at least 20 wk after the inoculation. The delayed progression of MAIDS in xid mice appears to depend on xid mutation, according to our experiments using both sexes of (B6.xid x B6)F1 and (B6 x B6.xid)F1 mice. Furthermore, Ly-1 B cells, enriched by a FACS, were shown to integrate the defective genome and appeared to be a major virus-infected B cell population. Our data corroborate that Ly-1 B cells play an important role in the induction and progression of MAIDS.
