Background and Objectives: In teeth with open apices, performing single session apexification is a challenging treatment due to the difficulty in handling mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA). Minimally invasive approaches in dentistry have also influenced the cavity designs in endodontics. Until now, different techniques have not been investigated in addition to manual condensation during the process of placing MTA in traditional (TradACs) or conservative (ConsACs) endodontic access cavities. The aim of this in vitro study was to compare and evaluate the obturation quality of MTA apical plugs placed with different techniques in TradACs or ConsACs. Materials and Methods: Sixty upper central teeth were divided into two main groups based on cavity design, and then each main group was further divided into three subgroups according to MTA placement techniques (n = 10): TradAC-manual, TradAC-manual + indirect ultrasonic activation, TradAC-manual + XP-endo Shaper (XPS), ConsAC-manual, ConsAC-manual + indirect ultrasonic activation, and ConsAC-manual + XPS. Subsequently, the porosity percentages in the MTA apical plug were analyzed using micro-computed tomography. The statistical analysis was performed using the Kruskal-Wallis H test and Mann-Whitney U test. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: There were differences in volume of porosity percentages (%) according to cavity designs and MTA application techniques (p < 0.05). Except for the XPS group, more porosity was observed in ConsACs compared to TradACs. In TradACs, the significantly lowest open and total porosity was observed in the manual, ultrasonic, and XPS techniques, respectively. In ConsACs, the significantly lowest porosity was observed in the manual, XPS, and ultrasonic techniques, respectively (p < 0.05). Conclusions: In MTA obturation, cavity designs and application techniques had an impact on the MTA porosity. Creating an apical plug in ConsACs may result in more porosity compared to TradACs, especially when manual or indirect ultrasonic activation is preferred. Opting for the manual technique alone may be considered sufficient for controlling porosity for both TradACs and ConsACs.

BACKGROUND: Dental students are future dentists. Continuous assessment and improving of the educational curricula will ensure excellent academic performance of dental students and thus providing the community with the best treatment modalities. The aim of this study was to evaluate the root canal filling quality performed in extracted teeth by preclinical undergraduate Yemeni dental students. METHODS: Root canal treatment was performed by undergraduate preclinical dental students on 331 extracted human teeth including 741 roots. The teeth were then collected and evaluated radiographically based on three criteria of quality (length, density, and taper). Cohen's Kappa test was used to assess the agreement between the examiners and Chi-squared test was used for the association between the study variables. The level of significant was set at α < 0.05. RESULTS: The results of the study revealed that the overall quality of roots canals fillings was poor. However, more than half of the study sample (53.4%) had adequate length, 13.1% had adequate density, and 14.2% had adequate taper. Anterior as well as single-rooted teeth had significantly better quality than posterior and multi-rooted teeth, respectively. The root canal fillings quality mandibular teeth was better than of maxillary teeth with no significant difference (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The findings of the study emphasize the need of improving the endodontic course in the preclinical level and more advanced techniques and instruments should be incorporated.

AIM: To evaluate the percentage volumes of filling materials and voids in single-rooted teeth filled with three different filling systems using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). METHODOLOGY: Thirty single-rooted human teeth were used. After preparation of the root canals, the teeth were randomly divided into three groups (n = 10). The canals were filled with EndoREZ, ActiV GP or AH Plus/gutta-percha. Each specimen was scanned using a micro-CT device at a resolution of 13.68 µm. Percentage volumes of root filling materials and voids were calculated and data were analysed statistically using the Kruskal-Wallis test and the Mann-Whitney U-test with Bonferroni adjustment. Within each group, the Friedman test was performed with the Wilcoxon signed-rank test to detect discrepancies. RESULTS: The percentage volume of filling material was significantly lower in the ActiV GP group than in the other groups (P < 0.05), whilst the percentage volume of voids was significantly higher in the ActiV GP group than in the other groups (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: None of the systems were associated with void-free root fillings. The ActiV GP system had a significantly higher percentage volume of voids than the other systems.

AIM: To evaluate the effect of root canal cross-sectional shape on single-cone root filling bond strength, as well as to determine the percentage of gutta-percha-filled areas (PGFA) and sealer-filled areas (PSFA), establishing a relationship between these variables. METHODOLOGY: Distal roots of mandibular molars were selected using microcomputed tomography imaging and allocated into three groups (n = 10) according to canal shape: round, oval and long oval. The canals were prepared with an R40 reciprocating instrument and filled with matching single-cone gutta-percha and AH Plus sealer. Two 1-mm-thick dentine slices were obtained from each third of each root. PGFA and PSFA were calculated in digital images (x25 magnification) of each slice. Next, the slices were subjected to a push-out test and the failure modes (adhesive, cohesive or mixed) were assessed. Data were analysed using parametric tests (P < 0.05). RESULTS: In the coronal (2.17 ± 0.56MPa) and middle thirds (1.78 ± 0.45MPa), the round canals were associated with higher bond strength values (P < 0.01), with no difference between the groups for the apical third (P > 0.05). Adhesive and mixed failures predominated in round canals, whilst cohesive failures were more frequent in oval and long oval canals. Round canals had significantly higher PGFA and lower PSFA than all other groups (P = 0.000). The PGFA and PSFA had a positive (r = 0.521, P = 0.000) and a negative (r = -0.523, P = 0.000) correlation with bond strength, respectively. CONCLUSION: Bond strength values of gutta-percha and sealer were affected by canal shape. Higher percentage of gutta-percha-filled area resulted in higher bond strength to dentine.

PURPOSE: To assess the prevalence of apical periodontitis (AP), as determined by orthopantomograms (OPGs), and its correlation with the quality of root fillings and coronal restorations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study evaluated a random sample of 193 patients--112 (58%) females and 81 (42%) males--who presented as new patients at the Division of Endodontics. Digital OPGs were independently examined by two reliability-calibrated endodontists. The total number of teeth present, the location of the root canalfilled teeth, and the presence or absence of AP were recorded for each radiograph. The results were statistically analysed using the chi-square test followed by model building using multiple logistic regression. RESULTS: A total of 324 endodontically treated teeth from the 193 selected radiographs were analysed. The mean number of teeth per patient was 25.5 ± 4.6, with an average of 1.64 root canal treatments per subject. Radiographically detected AP was associated with 190 (58.6%) root canal-treated teeth. The logistic model shows that the quality of endodontic treatment (adjusted odds ratio [ORa] = 1.82; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.40-3.17), status of coronal restoration (ORa = 1.77; 95% CI: 1.20-2.61) and the type of material used for coronal restorations (ORa = 1.39; 95% CI: 1.03-1.87) were significantly related to the periapical health of the teeth. CONCLUSIONS: The quality of endodontic treatment, status of coronal restoration and the type of coronal restorative material were found to be the most important factors influencing the health of periradicular tissue.

OBJECTIVE: With a microcomputed tomography (microCT) imaging device, we aimed to quantitatively evaluate root canal fillings after commonly used endodontic procedures and also tested the suitability of microCT for this purpose. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty single roots were instrumented and obturated with gutta-percha and Tubli-Seal. They were divided into 4 groups of 20. The Hand groups were instrumented with hand files and filled with thermoplastic (Th) compaction and cold lateral (CL) condensation, i.e. Hand-Th and Hand-CL, respectively. The Rot groups, i.e. Rot-Th and Rot-CL, were instrumented with a rotary ProFile system and filled as above. The roots were scanned and 3-dimensional (3D) visualization was obtained. The number, size, percentage of volume and distribution of voids at the filling/dentine interface (i-voids) and voids surrounded by filling material (s-voids) were measured. RESULTS: Canal fillings differed significantly with regard to the size of both types of voids and the average number of i-voids. All canals presented a low volume of voids. The highest percentage (0.69%) was found for i-voids in the Hand-CL group, while the lowest volume (0.11% for s-voids and 0.14% for i-voids) was in the Hand-Th canals. Apically, in the last 3 mm, i-voids were observed mainly in the Th groups, and s-voids occurred mostly in the coronal part of the canal filling in all cases. CONCLUSION: MicroCT was a useful tool for 3D quantitative evaluations of these root canal fillings. None of the root canal instrumentation and filling methods ensured void-free obturation. CL condensation produced mainly i-voids. With Th compaction, internal s-voids were particularly common, but there were mainly i-voids in the apical part.

This study examined the adhesive strength of two self-adhesive methacrylate resin-based sealers (MetaSEAL and RealSeal SE) to root dentin and compared them with RealSeal and AH Plus in properties. A total of 48 extracted human single-rooted teeth were used to prepare the 0.9-mm thick longitudinal tooth slice (each per tooth). Standardized simulated canal spaces of uniform dimensions were prepared in the middle of radicular dentin. After treated with 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and 17% EDTA, tooth slices were allocated randomly to four groups (n=12) in terms of different sealers used: MetaSEAL, RealSeal SE, RealSeal, and AH plus groups. The simulated canal spaces were obturated with different sealers in each group. There were 10 slabs with 20 simulated canal spaces (n=20) used in each group for push-out testing. The failure modes and the ultrastructures of fractured sealer-dentin interfaces were examined. The remaining 2 slabs in each group underwent partial demineralization for observation of the ultrastructure of resin tags. The results showed that the push-out bond strength was 12.01±4.66 MPa in MetaSEAL group, significantly higher than that in the other three groups (P<0.05). Moreover, no statistically significant differences were noted in the push-out bond strength between RealSeal SE (5.43±3.68 MPa) and AH Plus (7.34±2.83 MPa) groups and between RealSeal SE and RealSeal (2.93±1.76 MPa) groups (P>0.05). Mixed failures were predominant in the fractured sealer-dentin interfaces in MetaSEAL and AH Plus groups, while adhesive failures were frequently seen in RealSeal SE and RealSeal groups. In conclusion, after complete removal of the smear layer, MetaSEAL showed superior bond ability to root dentin. The RealSeal SE is applicable in clinical practice, with its adhesive strength similar to that of AH Plus. The self-adhesive methacrylate resin-based sealer holds promise for use in endodontic treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the sealing abilities of two root canal sealers (epoxy resin-based AH Plus(®) and polydimethylsiloxane-based GuttaFlow(®)) and of five root filling techniques (lateral condensation, matched taper single gutta-percha point, laterally condensed-matched taper gutta-percha point, Thermafil(®) and continuous wave of condensation), using a bacterial leakage model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and seventy-four single-rooted human teeth were randomly divided into 10 test groups (n = 15) and two control groups (n = 12). The roots that were filled with the test material, using the different root filling techniques, were mounted in a two-chamber bacterial leakage model and Enterococcus faecalis was added to the upper chambers. The lower chambers of all of the specimens were checked every day during the test period (100 days). The day of turbidity was recorded for each sample. Statistical analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier and log-rank tests. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between the epoxy resin-based and the polydimethylsiloxane-based sealers, irrespective of the filling techniques used (p > 0.05). The continuous wave of condensation technique was found to be superior to the other techniques (p < 0.05). The difference between the other groups was insignificant (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: AH Plus and GuttaFlow sealers showed similar levels of sealing ability. The continuous wave of condensation technique had the best sealing capability when compared to the other techniques.

RESUMO

A review of the literature on the use of carrier based obturation materials focusing on Thermafil and Resilon based obturator (RealSeal 1) are presented in this article. The review addressed the history, apical leakage, coronal leakage, biocompatibility, sealing ability and clinical success of Thermafil and RealSeal 1. Based on the studies gathered, this review concluded that both treatment techniques (Thermafil and RealSeal 1) did not provide excellent apical sealing ability. More research should be done to try to overcome their main drawback, its sealing ability.

AIM: To analyse several physicochemical properties of AH Plus (Dentsply DeTrey, Konstanz, Germany), including setting time, flow, radiopacity and the degree of conversion (DC); and to correlate the results with the source of the material: from the beginning, middle or end of the tubes in which they were supplied. METHODOLOGY: Three experimental groups were established for each property investigated. Group 1 corresponded to material taken from the beginning of tubes A and B; Group 2 corresponded to material taken from the middle of each tube; and group 3 corresponded to that from the end of each tube. The setting time, flow and radiopacity were studied according to American National Standards Institute/American Dental Association (ANSI/ADA) Specification 57. DC was determined from infrared spectra, which were recorded at 1-h intervals for the first 6 h; then, at 2-h intervals for the next 14 h; then, at 24 and 30 h. Data were analysed statistically by analysis of variance (anova), Tukey-Kramer, Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests, with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS: Group 1 had a significantly longer setting time (2303 ± 1058 min) (P < 0.05). Group 3 had the lowest flowability (30.0 ± 0.7 mm) and the highest radiopacity (14.85 ± 1.8 mm Al) (P < 0.05). No differences were found for the DC test (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The results suggest that segregation occurs between the organic and inorganic components of AH Plus sealer, thereby changing the setting time, flow and radiopacity.

AIM: The technical quality of a root canal treatment is clinically judged by the apical extension and homogeneity of the filling material imaged by periapical radiographs (PA). The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the association between the technical quality of the root canal filling and treatment outcome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 234 teeth (268 roots) that underwent root-canal treatment, the quality of the root canal filling as well as the outcome of the treatment were assessed with both PA and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) 2 years after treatment. Satisfactory root filling on PA was defined as 0-2 mm within the radiographic apex without voids; on CBCT scans, the apical end of the canal replaced the radiographic apex. The outcome predictors were analyzed using multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS: At recall, periapical radiolucent areas were absent in 198 (74%) roots on PA and 164 (61%) roots on CBCT scans. The presence of preoperative periapical radiolucency and the quality of root filling and coronal restoration were identified by both PA and CBCT as outcome predictors (p < 0.01). Complete absence of post-treatment periapical radiolucency was observed in CBCT scans in 81% and 49% of satisfactory and unsatisfactory root fillings, respectively, as compared to 87% and 61% revealed by PA. CONCLUSION: Satisfactory root fillings were associated with a favorable outcome, confirmed by both PA and CBCT. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The outcome of root canal treatment is improved once the filling is 0-2 mm from the apex, and no voids could be detected. Technical skills and performance of root canal filling procedures should be emphasized, and suitable methods should be developed in order to achieve more compacted filling materials without voids and at the correct length.

AIM: The aim of this study is to examine the survival distributions of primary root canal treatment using interval-censored data and to assess the factors affecting the outcome of primary root canal treatment, in terms of periapical healing and tooth survival. MATERIALS AND METHODS: About one tenth of primary root canal treatment performed between January 1981 and December 1994 in a dental teaching hospital were systematically sampled for inclusion in this study. Information about the patients' personal particulars, medical history, pre-operative status, treatment details, and previous review status of the treated teeth, were obtained from dental records. Patients were recalled for examination clinically and radiographically. Treatment outcomes were categorized according to the status for periapical healing and tooth survival. The event time was interval-censored and subjected to survival analysis using the Weibull accelerated failure time model. RESULTS: A total of 889 teeth were suitable for analysis. Survival curves of both outcome measures (periapical healing and tooth survival) declined in a non-linear fashion with time. Median survival of the treated teeth was 119 months (periapical healing) and 252 months (tooth survival). Age, tooth type, pre-operative periapical status, occlusion, type of final restoration, and condition of the tooth/restoration margin were significant factors affecting both periapical healing and tooth survival. Apical extent and homogeneity of root canal fillings had a significant impact towards periapical healing (p < 0.05), but not tooth survival. CONCLUSION: The longevity of treated teeth based on tooth survival was considerably greater than that of periapical healing. Both outcome measures were affected by a number of socio-demographic, pre-, intra-, and post-operative factors. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Root canal-treated teeth may continue to function for a considerable period of time even though there may be radiographic periapical lesion present. Decision for extraction may be due to reasons other than a failure of the periapical tissues to heal.

AIM: To assess differences in observed cross-sectional areas of root canals and filling materials, as imaged by three microscopy and two tomography methods. METHODOLOGY: Six roots filled with laterally compacted Gutta-percha and AH26 were scanned with phase-contrast enhanced microtomography in a synchrotron facility. Reconstructed virtual slices were compared with sections of both wet and acrylic-embedded roots, evaluated also by light and electron microscopy (EM) and laboratory-based microtomography (µCT). The different contrasts of Gutta-percha, voids, sealer and root dentine were identified and correlated. Inner canal border, outer Gutta-percha rim and the external margin of a void were manually delineated, and the enclosed areas were repeatedly measured by three observers. Interobserver and interimaging method differences were tested by 2-way anova with Bonferroni adjustments (P < 0.05). Percentages of Gutta-percha-filled canal areas (PGP) were determined. RESULTS: Phase-contrast enhanced microtomography revealed internal interfaces and detailed 3D volumes of accentuated voids as well as micrometre-sized particles and gaps within the treated roots. Overestimates in the cross-sectional areas were obtained by light microscopy, whereas underestimates were obtained by µCT and EM. Differences exceeded 40%; however, PGP values by all methods were within 5% for the same slice. Differences between observers were sometimes significant, but they were not method related (<3%). CONCLUSIONS: Phase-contrast enhanced microtomography is a powerful non-destructive ex vivo investigation method for studying the interfaces within root canals and filling materials at a micrometre resolution. The method does not require damage-prone sectioning/polishing during sample preparation procedures. Caution should be used when quantifying the extent of Gutta-percha in root fillings by measurements using µCT, light and EM.

AIM: To assess the physicochemical properties and the surface morphology of AH Plus, GuttaFlow, RoekoSeal and Activ GP root canal sealers. METHODOLOGY: Five samples of each material were evaluated for setting time, dimensional alteration, solubility and radiopacity tests, according to ANSI/ADA Specification 57. A total of 50 mL of deionized distilled water from the solubility tests were used to measure the metal solubility by atomic absorption spectrometry. The morphologies of the external surface and the cross-section of the samples were analysed by means of a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Statistical analysis was performed by using one-way anova and post hoc Tukey-Kramer tests with the null hypothesis set as 5%. RESULTS: AH Plus had the longest setting time (580.6 ± 3.05 min) (P<0.05). Activ GP did not have a mean value on the radiopacity and solubility tests (1.31 ± 0.35 mm and 11.8 ± 0.43%, respectively) in accordance with ANSI/ADA, being significantly different from the other materials (P<0.05), which had mean values for these tests in accordance with the ADA's requirements. GuttaFlow was the only sealer that conformed to the Specification 57 concerning the dimensional alteration test (0.44 ± 0.16%) (P<0.05). The spectrometry test revealed significant Ca(2+), K(+), Zn(2+) ion release from Activ GP sealer (32.57 ± 5.0, 1.57 ± 0.22 and 8.20 ± 1.74 µg mL(-1), respectively). In SEM analysis, the loss of matrix was evident and the filler particles were more distinguishable in all groups. CONCLUSIONS: The setting time of all sealers was in accordance with ANSI/ADA's requirements. Activ GP did not fulfill ANSI/ADA's protocols regarding radiopacity, dimensional alteration and solubility. GuttaFlow was the only sealer that conformed to the Specification 57 in all tests. SEM analysis revealed that the surfaces of all sealers had micromorphological changes after the solubility test.

AIM: To study changes in technical quality of root fillings and periapical status in root filled teeth in random samples of 20 to 70 year-olds between 1973 and 2003. METHODOLOGY: Data from dentate subjects aged 20-70 years from examinations conducted in 1973 (n = 498), 1983 (n = 530), 1993 (n = 547) and 2003 (n = 491) were used for the analysis. Length of root fillings were measured on radiographs to the nearest 0.1 mm. Adequate seal was defined as a root filling without lateral and/or apical voids. Periapical status was assessed according to the periapical index. All observations were made by one calibrated observer registered from full mouth radiographic examinations. Teeth with root fillings ending within the canal without lateral or apical voids were considered adequate. The association between root filling quality and periapical status was analysed by means of the Chi-squared test and a multilevel logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Adequately root filled teeth had a significantly lower frequency of apical periodontitis than inadequately root filled teeth (11.8% vs. 22.8%). The frequency of technically adequate root fillings increased statistically significant from 1973 (23.7%) to 2003 (36.4%) without a concomitant improvement of the periapical status in root filled teeth over time (24.5% vs. 24.6%). CONCLUSIONS: This study reports on an improving technical quality of root fillings over time, without a concomitant improvement of the periapical status in root filled teeth. A larger proportion of treated molars over time may be of importance for the result.

INTRODUCTION: Manufacturers offer single-file instrumentation systems with matching gutta-percha (GP) cones to simplify root canal preparation and obturation. The purpose of this study was to determine whether file diameters and tapers match with corresponding cone diameters and tapers (precision) as well as industry standards (accuracy). METHODS: Twenty files and corresponding GP cones from each size of F360 (#25, #35, #45, #55 with .04 taper) and Reciproc (#25, #40, #50 with variable tapers) instruments were examined by using optical microscopy (×32) to determine their diameter and taper. Precision was evaluated by using one-way analysis of variance (α = 0.05) with Scheffé post hoc tests and t tests with Bonferroni correction. Accuracy was calculated by subtracting the nominal values from the measured values of all files and GP cones, and mean diameter and taper differences were compared by using one-way analysis of variance (α = 0.05) and Scheffé post hoc test for pairwise comparison. RESULTS: For F360, the majority of file and cone diameters were within the tolerance levels, but most of the file diameters were significantly larger than GP cone diameters (P < .05), but the majority of all measured values were within the tolerance levels. For Reciproc, file and cone diameters at D1 and D3 mostly approached the nominal values. At the coronal end, file diameters #25 and #50 were significantly smaller than cone diameters (P < .05). For both instrumentation systems, almost all file and cone tapers matched with the preset tolerance ranges. For Reciproc, significant differences between file and GP cone demonstrated either smaller cone or smaller file diameters and tapers, depending on the size. Most of the measured values were within the acceptable range, but diameters at the coronal end exhibited the highest percent difference from the nominal values. CONCLUSIONS: Despite the call for standardization, variability in diameter and taper dimensions between single-file instrumentation systems and their corresponding GP cones can be expected.

RESUMO

One of the main origins of unsuccesful endodontic treatment is coronal leakage. In the prevention of coronal leakage a good sealing restoration seems mandatory. The effect of 2 types lining cement used as coronal barrier on filled root canals was studied over time. Fifty extracted human canines were prepared and filled by gutta-percha with a quantifiable initial coronal leakage. After placement of the lining cements in 2 groups of 20 canines, leakage was assessed at 96 hours and at 26 weeks and compared with the leakage in a control group of 10 canines. Placement of a coronal barrier of lining cement on the orifice of the root canal after endodontic treatment revealed a significant reduction of coronal leakage. In this study leakage decreased over time.

The purpose of this investigation was to examine variability of gutta-percha (GP) cone tip diameter (D(0)) and taper among five different brands of #30, 0.04 GP cones (n = 15/brand). Mean percent D(0) difference from the manufacturer's reported (nominal) diameter of Maillefer (-15.42 +/- 7.16%) and Lexicon (-12.76 +/- 4.98%) were significantly different (p < or = 0.05) from Maxima (3.18 +/- 7.06%), Diadent (3.62 +/- 11.37%), and K(3) (7.27 +/- 7.84%), which were not significantly different from each other but exhibited diameters larger than the nominal diameter as indicated by positive values. Mean taper percent difference of Maxima (-3.00 +/- 3.80%) was significantly different (p < or = 0.05) from Lexicon (3.67 +/- 3.64%) and Maillefer (6.67 +/- 3.49%), with comparisons to Diadent (-0.17 +/- 6.37%) and K(3) (1.50 +/- 6.93%) not significantly different (p > 0.05) from each other or any other brand. Based on the evidence, there is significant variability between GP cone brands for both diameter and taper, with Maxima and Diadent, respectively, exhibiting the smallest mean difference from manufacturer's nominal tip diameter and taper. However, the high standard deviation values associated with most of the diameter and taper differences from nominal values also suggest high variability within individual brands.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the quality of root fillings in mandibular incisors and maxillary and mandibular canines using different methodologies of evaluation, namely radiographs, the fluid transport test and the percentage of gutta-percha (PGP), and to determine if a correlation occurs between the results of the different methodologies used. METHODS: One group of mandibular incisors with oval canals (n=20) and one group of maxillary and mandibular canines (n=20) were instrumented and obturated by cold lateral compaction using AH 26 as the sealer. The filled roots were bucco-lingually and mesio-distally radiographed. Using a scoring system, the quality of each root filling was radiographically evaluated, the higher the score the poorer the quality. Fluid transport along the root filling was then measured using a fluid transportation device. Each root was horizontally sectioned 4 and 6mm from the apex. Images of the cross-sections were taken, using a microscope and a digital camera. Images were scanned into a PC as TIFF images. Using a KS 100 Imaging system the canal area and the gutta-percha filled areas were measured. The percentage of gutta-percha filled areas was calculated. RESULTS: Considering the radiographic scores of the two different projections together the score was significantly higher for the mandibular incisors than for the canines (P=0.039). The radiographic score was significantly higher for the mesio-distal radiograph in comparison with the bucco-lingual radiograph (P=0.0001), for the canines as well as the incisors. Using only the bucco-lingual radiograph there was no significant difference between the mandibular incisors and the canines (P=0.992). The mandibular incisors displayed significantly more fluid transport than the canines (P=0.049). A significantly greater percentage of gutta-percha filled areas was found in the cross-sections of canines as compared to the cross-sections of mandibular incisors (P=0.000001). The correlation between the radiographic score of the mesio-distal radiograph and the PGP 4 and 6mm was significant (P=0.013). There was no significant correlation between the FT and the radiograph or the FT and the PGP. CONCLUSIONS: The quality of the root fillings in oval canal-mandibular incisors may be compromised.
