Purpose:
to evaluate functional capacity and risk of hospital admission of elderly in Samambaia Federal District.Methods:
we used a validated questionnaire to identify risk of hospitaladmission and a questionnaire to evaluate functional capacity of 101elders.Results:
patients were predominantly female (64.4%), aged 65-74 years (68.3%). It was observed that 75.2% of respondents had no hospital admission in past year. Higher incidence of hospital admission and doctor visit was presented in females. In risk assessment, it was shown that 21% had low risk, 28% medium, 22% medium-high and 30% high. Prevalence of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases was, respectively, 30.7% and 18.8%. Among the sensory deficits, most common was visual impairment (73%).Conclusions:
our study showed a high proportion of elders at high risk of hospital admission, therefore, a differentiated service should be adopted for this group. However, we observed preservation of functional capacity of majority of them.(AU)
