RESUMEN

The energy levels of hydrogen-like atomic systems can be calculated with great precision. Starting from their quantum mechanical solution, they have been refined over the years to include the electron spin, the relativistic and quantum field effects, and tiny energy shifts related to the complex structure of the nucleus. These energy shifts caused by the nuclear structure are vastly magnified in hydrogen-like systems formed by a negative muon and a nucleus, so spectroscopy of these muonic ions can be used to investigate the nuclear structure with high precision. Here we present the measurement of two 2S-2P transitions in the muonic helium-4 ion that yields a precise determination of the root-mean-square charge radius of the α particle of 1.67824(83) femtometres. This determination from atomic spectroscopy is in excellent agreement with the value from electron scattering1, but a factor of 4.8 more precise, providing a benchmark for few-nucleon theories, lattice quantum chromodynamics and electron scattering. This agreement also constrains several beyond-standard-model theories proposed to explain the proton-radius puzzle2-5, in line with recent determinations of the proton charge radius6-9, and establishes spectroscopy of light muonic atoms and ions as a precise tool for studies of nuclear properties.

We present a new technique to prevent the detrimental period chirp that appears in optical gratings fabricated by laser interference lithography (LIL). The idea is to bend the Lloyd's mirror in the lithographic setup to eliminate the period chirp already at the step of the grating's exposure. A new mathematical model was developed to describe the required bending geometry of the mirror. It is shown that this geometry can be described by multiple cross-sections of the mirror, each obtained by the solution of an implicit first-order differential equation. The proposed approach is illustrated on the basis of a concrete example. By slightly bending the Lloyd's mirror (by ≈ 3.5 mm of maximum deflection over an area of 142 mm × 215 mm) the period chirp of the exposed grating can be eliminated completely.

We report on an Yb:YAG thin-disk multipass amplifier delivering 100 ns long pulses at a central wavelength of 1030 nm with an energy of 330 mJ at a repetition rate of 100 Hz. The beam quality factor at the maximum energy was measured to be M2 < 1.17. The small signal gain is 21.7, and the gain at 330 mJ was measured to be 6.9. The 20-pass amplifier is designed as a concatenation of stable resonator segments in which the beam is alternately Fourier transformed and relay-imaged back to the disk by a 4f-imaging optical scheme stage. The Fourier transform propagation makes the output beam robust against spherical phase front distortions, while the 4f-stage is used to compensate the thermal lens of the thin-disk and to reduce the footprint of the amplifier.

Anticoagulant therapy is a mainstay in the management of patients with cardiovascular disease. The use of conventional anticoagulants carries potential side effects, mainly bleeding. Drugs targeting Factor XI (FXI) have been investigated in randomized controlled trials as a new option with more favorable outcomes. A comprehensive literature search was conducted to identify relevant studies comparing FXI inhibitors to placebo or standard therapy. The primary outcomes were incidence of all bleeding events, major bleeding, and thromboembolism. Secondary outcomes included incidence of all adverse events (AE), serious AE, and all-cause mortality. A total of 11 studies involving 10,536 patients were included. FXI inhibitors were associated with a trend toward reduction of bleeding events and incidence of thromboembolism compared to the control group (placebo/standard therapy). There was no statistically significant difference between both groups in terms of adverse events and all-cause mortality. When compared to enoxaparin, FXI inhibitors significantly reduced the risk of bleeding events (RR = 0.42, 95% CI: 0.23-0.76, P = 0.004) and thromboembolism (RR = 0.59, 95% CI: 0.44-0.77, P = 0.001). On the other hand, when compared to DOACs, FXI inhibitors were associated with a significant reduction in bleeding events but not thromboembolism. Whereas, compared to placebo, FXI inhibitors did not increase the risk of bleeding events, adverse events, or all-cause mortality (P > 0.05). FXI inhibitors could be a safer and more potent option for prevention of thromboembolism than conventional therapy.

BACKGROUND: Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women with diabetes in pregnancy (DIP) are more likely to have glycaemic levels above the target range, and their babies are thus at higher risk of excessive fetal growth. Shoulder dystocia, defined by failure of spontaneous birth of fetal shoulder after birth of the head requiring obstetric maneuvers, is an obstetric emergency that is strongly associated with DIP and fetal size. The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiology of shoulder dystocia in Aboriginal babies born to mothers with DIP. METHODS: Stratifying by Aboriginal status, characteristics of births complicated by shoulder dystocia in women with and without DIP were compared and incidence and time-trends of shoulder dystocia were described. Compliance with guidelines aiming at preventing shoulder dystocia in women with DIP were compared. Post-logistic regression estimation was used to calculate the population attributable fractions (PAFs) for shoulder dystocia associated with DIP and to estimate probabilities of shoulder dystocia in babies born to mothers with DIP at birthweights > 3 kg. RESULTS: Rates of shoulder dystocia from vaginal births in Aboriginal babies born to mothers with DIP were double that of their non-Aboriginal counterparts (6.3% vs 3.2%, p < 0.001), with no improvement over time. Aboriginal mothers with diabetes whose pregnancies were complicated by shoulder dystocia were more likely to have a history of shoulder dystocia (13.1% vs 6.3%, p = 0.032). Rates of guideline-recommended elective caesarean section in pregnancies with diabetes and birthweight > 4.5 kg were lower in the Aboriginal women (28.6% vs 43.1%, p = 0.004). PAFs indicated that 13.4% (95% CI: 9.7%-16.9%) of shoulder dystocia cases in Aboriginal (2.7% (95% CI: 2.1%-3.4%) in non-Aboriginal) women were attributable to DIP. Probability of shoulder dystocia among babies born to Aboriginal mothers with DIP was higher at birthweights > 3 kg. CONCLUSIONS: Aboriginal mothers with DIP had a higher risk of shoulder dystocia and a stronger association between birthweight and shoulder dystocia. Many cases were recurrent. These factors should be considered in clinical practice and when counselling women.

BACKGROUND: Adults with repaired tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) have right atrial (RA) remodeling and dysfunction, and RA function can be measured using speckle tracking echocardiography. There are limited data about the role of RA strain imaging for risk stratification in this population. We hypothesized that RA reservoir strain can identify TOF patients at risk of developing atrial arrhythmia. To test this hypothesis, we assessed the relationship between RA reservoir strain and atrial arrhythmias in adults with repaired TOF. METHOD: Retrospective cohort study of adults with repaired TOF, and no prior history of atrial arrhythmias. Atrial arrhythmia was defined as atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter/atrial tachycardia, and categorized as new-onset versus recurrent atrial arrhythmias. RESULTS: We identified 426 patients (age 33 ± 12 years; males 208 (49%)) that met the inclusion criteria. The mean RA reservoir strain, conduit strain, and booster strain were 34 ± 11%, 20 ± 9%, and 15 ± 12%, respectively. Of 426 patients, 73 (17%) developed new-onset atrial arrhythmias (atrial flutter/tachycardia n = 42; atrial fibrillation n = 31); annual incidence 1.9%. RA reservoir strain was associated with new-onset atrial arrhythmias (adjusted HR 0.95, 95% CI 0.93-0.97) after multivariable adjustment. Of 73 patients with new-onset atrial arrhythmia, 41 (56%) had recurrent atrial arrhythmia (atrial flutter/tachycardia n = 18; atrial fibrillation n = 23); annual incidence 11.2%. Similarly, RA reservoir strain was associated with recurrent atrial arrhythmias (adjusted HR 0.92, 95% CI 0.88-0.96) after multivariable adjustment. CONCLUSIONS: RA strain indices can identify patients at risk for atrial arrhythmias, and this can in turn, be used to guide the type/intensity of therapy in such patients.

We present a general analytical model for the calculation of the spatial distribution of the grating period, enabling the unification of all configurations of classical laser interference lithography (LIL) and scanning-beam interference lithography (SBIL) into one formalism. This is possible due to the consideration of Gaussian beams instead of point sources which allow for the accurate description of not only the laser's far-field but also its near-field. The proposed model enables the calculation of the grating period, the inclination and the slant of the grating lines on arbitrarily shaped substrates, originating from the interference of arbitrarily orientated and positioned Gaussian beams.

We present an easy-to-implement and low-cost setup for the precise measurement of the period chirp of diffraction gratings offering a resolution of 15 pm and reasonable scan speeds of 2 seconds per measurement point. The principle of the measurement is illustrated on the example of two different pulse compression gratings, one fabricated by laser interference lithography (LIL) and the other by scanning beam interference lithography (SBIL). A period chirp of 0.22 pm/mm2 at a nominal period of 610 nm was measured for the grating fabricated with LIL, whereas no chirp was observed for the grating fabricated by SBIL, which had a nominal period of 586.2 nm.

We present a comprehensive simulative and experimental investigation of how period-chirped pulse compression gratings affect the compressed pulses. A specifically developed ray-tracing tool was used for the simulative investigations. It is shown that the chirp creates a characteristic spatio-spectral error pattern, which leads to a degradation of the beam quality and an increase of the pulse duration. The experimental investigations, for which both a narrow-bandwidth continuous-wave and a pulsed laser beam were guided through a Treacy-compressor comprised of period-chirped gratings, confirm the simulation results and present methods on how to identify the chirp's characteristic error pattern in practice.

Gratings produced by two-spherical-beam Laser Interference Lithography (LIL) will have a nonuniform period, and the associated period variation is larger with the increase of the substrate size. This work quantitatively investigates a noninvasive method for improving the period variation on 4-inch silicon wafers. By temporarily deforming the flexible silicon wafer using a customized concave vacuum chuck [J. Vac. Sci. Technol. B19(6), 2347 (2001)10.1116/1.1421558], we show that the fabricated gratings will have improved period uniformity, with the period variation reduced by 86% at the 1000 nm central grating period setting. This process is a simple and efficient way to achieve linear gratings without altering the LIL configuration with two spherical beams. We present experimental results on the impact of a concave vacuum chuck on the chirp reduction at different grating period settings. Then, we compare two different LIL configurations with different wavelength sources concerning their influence on the efficiency of period variation reduction. Finally, the flatness of the 4-inch silicon wafers due to the temporary bending process is verified using optical profilometry measurements.

We demonstrate an injection-seeded thin-disk Yb:YAG laser at 1030 nm, stabilized by the Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) method. We modified the PDH scheme to obtain an error signal free from Trojan locking points, which allowed robust re-locking of the laser and reliable long-term operation. The single-frequency pulses have 50 mJ energy (limited to avoid laser-induced damage) with a beam quality of M2 < 1.1 and an adjustable length of 55-110 ns. Heterodyne measurements confirmed a spectral linewidth of 3.7 MHz. The short pulse build-up time (850 ns) makes this laser suitable for laser spectroscopy of muonic hydrogen, pursued by the CREMA collaboration.

We present a theoretical investigation on the approach of deliberately bending the substrate during the exposure within laser interference lithography to compensate for the period chirp. It is shown that the yet undiscovered function of the surface geometry, necessary to achieve the zero-chirp case (i.e. having a perfectly constant period over the whole substrate) is determined by a first-order differential equation. As the direct analytical solution of this differential equation is difficult, a numerical approach is developed, based on the optimization of pre-defined functions towards the unknown analytical solution of the differential equation by means of a Nelder-Mead simplex algorithm. By applying this method to a concrete example, we show that an off-center placement of the substrate with respect to the point sources is advantageous both in terms of achievable period and substrate curvature and that a fourth-order polynomial can greatly satisfy the differential equation leading to a root-mean-square deviation of only 1.4 pm with respect to the targeted period of 610 nm.

We present an experimental investigation on the benefits of helium as an atmospheric gas in CPA-free thin-disk multipass amplifiers (TDMPAs) for the amplification to average powers exceeding 1 kW and pulse peak powers reaching 5 GW. Both the performance of the amplifier and the properties of the amplified sub-400 fs laser pulses centred at a wavelength of 1030 nm are compared for different helium concentrations in air, outlining and quantifying the benefits of a helium-rich atmosphere. The amplification of 100 µJ pulses in an atmosphere with 60% helium instead of air led to a maximum increase in efficiency from 24% to 29%. This translated into an increase of average output power and pulse energy of 34 W (i.e +19%) and 0.34 mJ (i.e. +19%) respectively. At the same time an improvement of the beam quality from M2 = 1.18 to M2 = 1.14 was achieved. For the amplification of 10 µJ pulses to over 1 kW of average power an atmosphere with 33% helium led to an improved beam pointing stability by a factor of 2. Moreover, the beam propagation factor M2 improved by 0.1, and the power stability improved by approximately 10%.

We report on an analysis of the nonlinear absorption in lithium triborate (LBO) used for second and third harmonic generation of ultrashort laser pulses at average powers in the order of kW and with sub-picosecond pulse duration. Thermographic imaging of the LBO crystals together with a simple analytical model revealed the presence of nonlinear absorption in both harmonic generation processes. Subsequent processing with a numerical model considering the nonlinear mixing, the absorption, and the heat conduction was used to estimate the absorption coefficients. Average powers exceeding 100 W in the ultraviolet and 400 W in the visible spectral range were obtained while maintaining a good beam quality by avoiding excessive nonlinear absorption.

A peak output power of 29.6 W and an average output power of 8.5 W at a wavelength of 750 nm were demonstrated in quasi-CW multi-mode operation using an AlGaAs-based vertical external-cavity surface-emitting laser (VECSEL) diode-pumped at a wavelength of 675 nm. The comparatively low bandgap of the barrier material that was tuned to the pump-photon energy allowed a good compromise between low heat generation due to the quantum defect and strong absorptance of the pump radiation. The limitations for the average output power came mainly from insufficient heat flow from the intra-cavity heat spreader to the heat sink. These results show the potential for power scaling of diode-pumped VECSELs and the importance of effective heat removal.

We present a theoretical investigation on laser interference lithography used for the exposure of linear gratings. The focus is on the geometry of the arising interference lines on the substrate, in particular on their period and orientation, depending on the illumination geometry as determined by the setup. The common approach with point sources emitting spherical wavefronts is considered for the illumination. Three different cases are discussed, namely the interference between two point sources with either two convex, two concave or mixed, i.e., convex and concave wavefronts. General equations focusing mainly on the calculation of the period and the orientation of the grating lines are derived for each of the three exposure cases considering arbitrarily positioned point sources and arbitrarily shaped substrates. Additionally, the interference of symmetrically positioned point sources illuminating plane substrates is investigated, as these boundary conditions significantly simplify the derived equations.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes in pregnancy (DIP), which includes pre-gestational and gestational diabetes, is more prevalent among Aboriginal women. DIP and its adverse neonatal outcomes are associated with diabetes and cardiovascular disease in the offspring. This study investigated the impact of DIP on trends of large for gestational age (LGA) in Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal populations, and added to the limited evidence on temporal trends of DIP burden in these populations. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study that included all births in Western Australia between 1998 and 2015 using linked population health datasets. Time trends of age-standardised and crude rates of pre-gestational and gestational diabetes were estimated in Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal mothers. Mixed-effects multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate the association between DIP and population LGA trends over time. RESULTS: Over the study period, there were 526,319 births in Western Australia, of which 6.4% were to Aboriginal mothers. The age-standardised annual rates of pre-gestational diabetes among Aboriginal mothers rose from 4.3% in 1998 to 5.4% in 2015 and remained below 1% in non-Aboriginal women. The comparable rates for gestational diabetes increased from 6.7 to 11.5% over the study period in Aboriginal women, and from 3.5 to 10.2% among non-Aboriginal mothers. LGA rates in Aboriginal babies remained high with inconsistent and no improvement in pregnancies complicated by gestational diabetes and pre-gestational diabetes, respectively. Regression analyses showed that DIP explained a large part of the increasing LGA rates over time in Aboriginal babies. CONCLUSIONS: There has been a substantial increase in the burden of pre-gestational diabetes (Aboriginal women) and gestational diabetes (Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal) in recent decades. DIP appears to substantially contribute to increasing trends in LGA among Aboriginal babies.

A highly productive ablation process of 100 nm thick platinum films with a processed area rate of up to 378 cm2/min is presented using radially and azimuthally polarized laser beams. This was achieved by developing a laser amplifier generating 757 fs long laser pulses at a maximum average power of 390 W and a repetition rate of 10.6 MHz with adjustable polarization states, i.e., linear, radial, and azimuthal polarization on the work piece. The pulse train emitted from the laser was synchronized to a custom-designed polygon scanner and directed into an application machine.

We report on a thin-disk multipass amplifier delivering azimuthally polarized, 7.8 ps short, laser pulses at an average power and with pulse energies of up to 1.7 kW and 5.8 mJ, respectively. High polarization purity was achieved by compensating for the arbitrary linear phase shifts that are introduced by tilted optical elements.
